where_o some_o sort_n of_o fanatic_n among_o we_o place_v their_o holiness_n mere_o in_o the_o inward_a man_n without_o any_o regard_n to_o the_o outward_a as_o if_o we_o can_v be_v either_o happy_a or_o holy_a without_o any_o respect_n at_o all_o to_o one_o of_o the_o essential_a part_n of_o our_o constitution_n as_o if_o the_o inward_a man_n of_o the_o one_o can_v be_v holy_a in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o outward_a debauchery_n and_o the_o inward_a man_n of_o the_o other_o happy_a in_o the_o midst_n of_o bodily_a torment_n thus_o though_o we_o grant_v the_o soul_n to_o be_v the_o sovereign_n yet_o the_o body_n may_v just_o challenge_v the_o liberty_n of_o the_o subject_a the_o other_o sect_n of_o philosopher_n who_o have_v err_v in_o the_o other_o extreme_a be_v that_o of_o epicurus_n account_n he_o give_v of_o man_n the_o body_n be_v too_o predominant_a and_o the_o indolency_n of_o the_o body_n seem_v far_o to_o surpass_v the_o tranquillity_n of_o the_o mind_n for_o it_o can_v be_v make_v appear_v that_o epicurus_n by_o his_o tranquillity_n mean_v that_o peace_n of_o conscience_n and_o serenity_n of_o soul_n which_o be_v the_o result_n of_o a_o virtuous_a and_o holy_a life_n but_o only_o that_o quiet_a of_o mind_n in_o opposition_n to_o the_o disturbance_n of_o business_n or_o those_o perplexity_n of_o mind_n which_o may_v arise_v either_o from_o bodily_a distemper_n or_o some_o secret_a fear_n and_o jealousy_n now_o if_o that_o peace_n and_o comfort_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n in_o the_o sense_n before_o describe_v be_v not_o mean_v by_o tranquillity_n of_o mind_n then_o though_o perhaps_o the_o word_n may_v sound_v well_o yet_o indeed_o it_o fall_v short_a of_o the_o true_a and_o real_a happiness_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o rise_v safe_a and_o customary_a in_o respect_n of_o those_o with_o who_o he_o live_v for_o we_o never_o yet_o hear_v of_o a_o kingdom_n or_o commonwealth_n of_o atheist_n such_o as_o make_v it_o their_o business_n positive_o and_o open_o to_o assert_v and_o defend_v the_o opinion_n of_o atheism_n but_o here_o it_o be_v reply_v that_o whatever_o his_o principle_n be_v in_o themselves_o or_o what_o ever_o bid_v use_v other_o may_v make_v of_o they_o yet_o that_o he_o for_o his_o part_n be_v a_o severe_a practiser_n of_o virtue_n and_o religion_n but_o it_o may_v be_v just_o question_v whether_o the_o joint_a belief_n of_o a_o corporeal_a god_n and_o a_o mortal_a soul_n have_v ever_o any_o good_a influence_n upon_o a_o holy_a life_n but_o suppose_v epicurus_n in_o general_a to_o be_v a_o and_o especial_o by_o that_o universal_a deluge_n of_o sin_n and_o wickedness_n which_o both_o upon_o a_o natural_a and_o moral_a account_n be_v very_o prejudicial_a to_o the_o concern_v of_o truth_n both_o as_o vice_n be_v natural_o destructive_a of_o good_a principle_n and_o also_o as_o wicked_a man_n be_v ready_a to_o believe_v though_o never_o so_o false_a what_o they_o think_v will_v be_v their_o interest_n to_o be_v true_a thus_o if_o we_o consider_v the_o state_n of_o the_o gentile_a world_n in_o the_o first_o age_n we_o shall_v there_o find_v a_o very_a bad_a face_n of_o thing_n for_o not_o to_o speak_v of_o the_o grossness_n of_o popular_a error_n and_o the_o no_o less_o impious_a than_o false_a apprehension_n of_o the_o generality_n of_o the_o common_a sort_n the_o most_o exact_a inquiry_n of_o their_o philosopher_n be_v often_o false_a but_o always_o mix_v with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o uncertainty_n in_o their_o discourse_n have_v common_o a_o contrary_a sect_n and_o
