of_o elementary_a creature_n in_o the_o world_n for_o as_o love_v so_o knowledge_n do_v descend_v and_o therefore_o if_o we_o have_v such_o superior_a soul_n yet_o than_o we_o shall_v find_v as_o much_o difficulty_n in_o they_o also_o here_o therefore_o it_o be_v to_o be_v noted●_n that_o no_o nature_n except_v god_n can_v know_v itself_o perfect_o so_o neither_o proper_o but_o as_o it_o be_v by_o way_n of_o reflection_n for_o even_o as_o the_o eye_n though_o it_o behold_v all_o other_o thing_n yet_o it_o can_v see_v itself_o unless_o in_o a_o glass_n so_o we_o can_v know_v our_o own_o soul_n but_o as_o it_o show_v itself_o in_o the_o work_v as_o in_o a_o mirror_n so_o that_o as_o by_o it_o we_o know_v other_o thing_n so_o by_o other_o thing_n we_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o it_o which_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o imperfect_a shadow_n and_o indeed_o not_o so_o much_o as_o a_o shadow_n of_o perfection_n and_o herein_o it_o bear_v the_o image_n of_o god_n in_o a_o special_a manner_n who_o can_v be_v know_v proper_o but_o only_o by_o his_o creature_n rather_o what_o he_o be_v not_o than_o what_o he_o be_v so_o that_o as_o it_o be_v proper_a to_o he_o alone_o who_o be_v the_o perfection_n of_o all_o nature_n to_o know_v all_o thing_n so_o he_o only_o can_v proper_o and_o perfect_o know_v both_o they_o and_o himself_o know_v how_o far_o the_o soul_n original_a may_v be_v know_v some_o perhaps_o will_v say_v if_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n that_o can_v be_v know_v than_o it_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o inquire_v after_o it_o i_o answer_v that_o though_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v very_o difficult_a especial_o the_o original_n of_o it_o and_o though_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o know_v it_o perfect_o and_o so_o proper_o as_o we_o know_v other_o thing_n for_o the_o reason_n abovesaid_a yet_o there_o be_v a_o competency_n and_o such_o as_o may_v give_v reasonable_a satisfaction_n to_o our_o nature_n to_o be_v attain_v and_o therewith_o we_o ought_v to_o rest_v content_v for_o though_o we_o can_v see_v no_o reason_n yet_o if_o we_o see_v reason_n why_o we_o shall_v see_v no_o reason_n reason_v it_o be_v we_o shall_v be_v content_a without_o reason_n chap._n iii_o diversity_n of_o opinion_n about_o the_o nature_n and_o the_o original_n of_o the_o soul_n soul_n strange_a conceit_n about_o the_o soul_n the_o truth_n of_o this_o ignorance_n will_v far_o appear_v and_o also_o far_o the_o point_n in_o hand_n if_o we_o shall_v consider_v the_o many_o strange_a opinion_n that_o have_v be_v in_o the_o world_n concern_v the_o anture_n and_o original_n of_o it_o opinion_n 1._o aristotle_n opinion_n first_o aristotle_n that_o prince_n of_o philosopher_n who_o be_v ignorant_a of_o the_o creation_n hold_v that_o the_o world_n be_v eternal_a do_v also_o maintain_v that_o soul_n have_v be_v from_o eternity_n but_o yet_o propagate_v from_o parent_n to_o child_n the_o soul_n be_v in_o the_o seed_n potential_o though_o not_o actual_o but_o whether_o it_o be_v mortal_a or_o immortal_a as_o himself_o be_v not_o certain_a so_o his_o writing_n be_v very_o doubtful_a yet_o rather_o conclude_v that_o it_o be_v howbeit_o the_o first_o creation_n of_o nothing_o be_v deny_v flat_o by_o he_o and_o all_o his_o follower_n somewhat_o more_o tolerable_a than_o this_o because_o it_o have_v some_o resemblance_n of_o truth_n be_v the_o fable_n of_o the_o poet_n that_o prometheus_n poet_n 2._o poet_n make_v the_o first_o man_n of_o the_o slime_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o be_v belove_v of_o the_o god_n and_o sometime_o take_v up_o to_o heaven_n he_o there_o see_v the_o celestial_a orb_n to_o live_v and_o move_v by_o fire_n whereupon_o he_o make_v bold_a to_o steal_v some_o of_o the_o heavenly_a fire_n to_o enlive_v his_o body_n and_o so_o inform_v it_o with_o a_o live_a soul_n whence_o it_o seem_v come_v that_o opinion_n that_o soul_n be_v make_v of_o celestial_a fire_n other_o again_o hold_v that_o angel_n make_v all_o man_n soul_n of_o spirit_n and_o fire_n they_o 3._o that_o angel_n make_v they_o of_o this_o mind_n be_v seleucus_n and_o long_o before_o he_o all_o carp●crates_n be_v of_o opinion_n that_o they_o by_o the_o animal_n spirit_n as_o by_o a_o chariot_n plato_n 8._o plato_n plato_n and_o his_o follower_n maintain_v that_o all_o soul_n be_v at_o first_o breed_v in_o heaven_n of_o the_o divine_a nature_n and_o dwell_v here_o be_v endue_v with_o excellent_a science_n and_o virtue_n but_o afterward_o descend_v from_o thence_o into_o man_n body_n as_o into_o stink_a prison_n they_o be_v
