clear_o manifest_v 2._o there_o be_v a_o retentive_a faculty_n or_o a_o power_n of_o keep_v that_o nourishment_n a_o convenient_a time_n till_o it_o may_v be_v so_o wrought_v upon_o and_o perfect_v as_o to_o turn_v into_o one_o substance_n with_o the_o body_n and_o to_o refresh_v its_o part_n but_o lâ—st_v nature_n shall_v suck_v poison_n instead_o of_o nourishment_n or_o digest_v that_o into_o the_o outward_a sense_n and_o to_o be_v seat_v in_o the_o former_a part_n of_o the_o brain_n 2._o the_o fancy_n or_o imagination_n which_o work_v upon_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v receive_v into_o the_o former_a and_o be_v think_v to_o be_v place_v in_o the_o middle_a part_n of_o the_o brain_n 3._o the_o memory_n which_o keep_v those_o thing_n that_o be_v receive_v in_o by_o the_o other_o and_o lay_v they_o up_o as_o in_o a_o treasury_n and_o the_o seat_n of_o this_o be_v in_o the_o hindermost_a part_n of_o the_o brain_n and_o in_o this_o most_o admirable_a be_v the_o wisdom_n and_o power_n of_o god_n that_o certain_a image_n of_o thing_n long_o since_o see_v or_o hear_v shall_v be_v lay_v up_o in_o a_o corner_n of_o the_o brain_n and_o there_o preserve_v many_o year_n and_o call_v to_o mind_n though_o they_o be_v the_o resemblance_n of_o many_o thousand_o several_a thing_n some_o memory_n be_v far_o worse_o than_o other_o yet_o even_o the_o mean_a ordinary_a memory_n be_v wonderful_a if_o we_o do_v right_o consider_v that_o in_o so_o narrow_a a_o compass_n the_o shape_n and_o likeness_n of_o so_o many_o several_a thing_n shall_v be_v preserve_v yea_o even_o this_o be_v notable_a that_o the_o image_n of_o so_o many_o man_n face_n as_o one_o man_n can_v remember_v shall_v be_v there_o engrave_v in_o so_o small_a a_o table_n as_o be_v the_o memory_n sect_n 4._o of_o the_o affection_n as_o for_o the_o affection_n they_o be_v seat_v in_o the_o heart_n and_o these_o be_v many_o as_o 1._o love_n which_o be_v a_o affection_n of_o the_o soul_n unite_n itself_o to_o some_o thing_n apprehend_v as_o good_a for_o so_o whatsoever_o be_v belove_v love_n either_o be_v good_a or_o seem_v to_o have_v some_o good_a in_o it_o to_o he_o that_o love_v it_o contrary_a to_o which_o be_v a_o second_o affection_n sc_n hatred_n hatred_n and_o that_o be_v a_o affection_n of_o the_o heart_n shune_v and_o separate_n itself_o from_o that_o which_o be_v so_o hate_a as_o suppose_v hurtful_a for_o though_o good_a thing_n be_v often_o hate_v yet_o there_o be_v a_o apprehension_n of_o evil_n in_o they_o and_o if_o we_o speak_v of_o the_o affection_n as_o create_v of_o god_n than_o nothing_o be_v belove_v but_o that_o which_o be_v true_o good_a nor_o hate_v but_o that_o which_o be_v true_o evil_a but_o of_o the_o integrity_n of_o the_o affection_n we_o may_v speak_v when_o we_o come_v to_o speak_v of_o the_o image_n of_o god_n in_o man._n desire_v be_v a_o affection_n of_o the_o heart_n reach_v after_o some_o good_a thing_n which_o be_v absent_a desire_n contrary_a to_o which_o be_v detestation_n detestation_n or_o abhor_v of_o that_o which_o may_v hereafter_o happen_v be_v conceive_v to_o be_v evil_a these_o two_o may_v be_v express_v by_o hunger_n flying-fish_n in_o great_a abundance_n so_o that_o here_o you_o may_v magnify_v the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n who_o in_o the_o day_n that_o these_o creature_n be_v make_v do_v imprint_v upon_o they_o the_o general_a though_o some_o few_o particular_n be_v suffer_v to_o live_v in_o both_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o walk_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o our_o calling_n and_o not_o to_o think_v we_o shall_v mend_v ourselves_o in_o a_o different_a element_n or_o another_o kind_n of_o course_n without_o some_o special_a cause_n some_o few_o may_v have_v some_o special_a warrant_n to_o change_v their_o calling_n as_o amos_n to_o leave_v his_o flock_n and_o teach_v the_o people_n and_o peter_n to_o leave_v his_o net_n and_o fish_n for_o man_n these_o have_v a_o immediate_a call_n from_o god_n and_o so_o i_o dare_v not_o deny_v but_o that_o in_o case_n of_o great_a necessity_n when_o the_o church_n be_v destitute_a of_o able_a minister_n some_o well-studied_n in_o the_o scripture_n and_o experience_v in_o the_o mystery_n of_o grace_n may_v take_v upon_o they_o the_o office_n of_o the_o ministry_n be_v lawful_o separate_v unto_o that_o function_n yet_o this_o will_v prove_v no_o more_o that_o every_o one_o may_v at_o his_o pleasure_n run_v from_o the_o shop_n to_o the_o pulpit_n than_o it_o will_v follow_v that_o all_o the_o fish_n in_o the_o sea_n may_v fly_v up_o into_o the_o his_o heart_n spiritual_o affect_v and_o enlarge_v towards_o god_n have_v need_n of_o special_a humiliation_n special_a meditation_n pâ—aier_n and_o other_o warm_n and_o quicken_a mean_n to_o raise_v he_o up_o 3._o as_o the_o air_n give_v breath_n and_o motion_n so_o also_o it_o give_v support_v to_o the_o bird_n earth_n and_o it_o carry_v they_o even_o as_o the_o earth_n do_v the_o beast_n which_o go_v up_o and_o down_o upon_o it_o so_o do_v the_o spirit_n also_o give_v support_v unto_o all_o that_o be_v bear_v of_o the_o spirit_n they_o be_v keep_v by_o the_o mighty_a power_n of_o god_n through_o faith_n unto_o salvation_n if_o it_o be_v not_o ordinary_a it_o may_v seem_v strange_a that_o the_o air_n which_o none_o can_v see_v be_v so_o thin_a a_o substance_n shall_v carry_v ashamed_a that_o thy_o appetite_n be_v so_o much_o beyond_o thy_o necessity_n and_o practice_v mortification_n as_o far_o as_o we_o can_v guess_v the_o bird_n take_v more_o delight_n in_o fly_v and_o sing_v than_o they_o do_v in_o feed_v and_o therefore_o they_o have_v soon_o do_v with_o this_o so_o shall_v a_o christian_n be_v more_o delight_v in_o converse_v with_o god_n in_o walk_v in_o the_o spirit_n in_o run_v the_o way_n of_o his_o commandment_n than_o in_o serve_v the_o necessity_n of_o nature_n yea_o it_o shall_v be_v his_o meat_n and_o drink_n to_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n as_o it_o be_v a_o delight_n to_o the_o bird_n to_o sing_v and_o soar_v aloft_o again_o as_o the_o bird_n use_v not_o these_o thing_n so_o as_o to_o make_v her_o unfit_a to_o fly_v so_o a_o christian_a must_v not_o abuse_v meat_n and_o drink_n so_o as_o to_o clog_v and_o dull_v his_o spirit_n and_o make_v he_o more_o dull_a and_o dead_a in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n but_o so_o to_o refresh_v himself_o that_o he_o may_v be_v the_o more_o cheerful_a and_o lively_a in_o his_o heavenly_a flight_n 7._o as_o the_o bird_n not_o sow_v nor_o gather_v into_o barnes_n as_o our_o saviour_n tell_v we_o yet_o be_v feed_v by_o our_o heavenly_a father_n so_o shall_v a_o child_n of_o god_n depend_v upon_o his_o providence_n without_o distrustful_a ear_n against_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n esteem_n of_o his_o heavenly_a father_n than_o many_o sparrow_n know_v certain_o that_o thy_o hair_n be_v number_v and_o that_o none_o of_o they_o can_v fall_v to_o the_o ground_n without_o thy_o heavenly_a father_n 10._o consider_v that_o as_o when_o the_o bird_n fly_v high_a it_o take_v least_o notice_n of_o earthly_a thing_n and_o be_v least_o move_v with_o they_o and_o affect_v towards_o they_o so_o when_o a_o christian_a be_v most_o raise_v in_o spiritual_a affection_n to_o the_o great_a height_n of_o heavenly-mindedness_a keep_v near_a heaven_n than_o be_v the_o earth_n far_o out_o of_o sight_n and_o he_o be_v least_o move_v with_o the_o thing_n here_o below_o and_o best_a able_a to_o contemn_v earthly_a vanity_n he_o be_v too_o far_o above_o these_o to_o be_v much_o affect_v towards_o they_o therefore_o this_o shall_v make_v we_o think_v of_o the_o exhortation_n of_o the_o apostle_n mind_v the_o thing_n which_o be_v above_o and_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o help_v ourselves_o against_o earthly_a affection_n and_o fleshly_a lust_n think_v with_o thyself_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o i_o be_o so_o earthly-minded_n that_o my_o affection_n be_v so_o engage_v to_o this_o or_o that_o in_o the_o world_n yet_o i_o can_v come_v off_o nor_o free_v myself_o that_o i_o can_v scarce_o persuade_v my_o own_o heart_n to_o be_v without_o these_o and_o these_o thing_n it_o be_v this_o because_o my_o heart_n be_v not_o carry_v aloft_o it_o draw_v too_o near_o the_o ground_n it_o withdraw_v too_o much_o from_o god_n if_o i_o shall_v keep_v up_o my_o heart_n close_o to_o god_n these_o thing_n will_v be_v out_o of_o sight_n the_o earth_n will_v seldom_o be_v in_o my_o thought_n at_o least_o not_o so_o as_o to_o work_v much_o upon_o my_o affection_n on_o the_o other_o side_n you_o see_v that_o those_o bird_n which_o use_v so_o much_o upon_o the_o ground_n they_o fly_v but_o soft_o as_o may_v be_v see_v by_o those_o that_o use_v about_o our_o house_n so_o also_o those_o christian_n that_o be_v much_o take_v up_o with_o the_o deal_n and_o business_n of_o the_o world_n they_o fly_v but_o soft_o have_v but_o slow_a affection_n and_o sluggish_a motion_n to_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n they_o go_v but_o cold_o about_o good_a duty_n and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v pray_v for_o a_o great_a measure_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o bear_v we_o upward_o 11._o in_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n as_o david_n etc._n etc._n therefore_o special_a watchfulness_n must_v be_v use_v by_o such_o 14._o as_o the_o bird_n be_v of_o all_o other_o live_v creature_n the_o to_o the_o earth_n and_o rest_v on_o the_o earth_n man_n be_v deep_o in_o love_n with_o his_o own_o element_n and_o strong_o tie_v to_o it_o in_o his_o affection_n it_o be_v say_v of_o one_o that_o be_v one_o of_o three_o who_o demand_v of_o the_o orracle_n which_o shall_v be_v chief_a and_o hear_v that_o he_o shall_v be_v the_o man_n that_o first_o shall_v kiss_v his_o mother_n he_o fall_v down_o and_o kiss_v the_o earth_n as_o account_v it_o the_o common_a mother_n of_o all_o man_n be_v so_o in_o love_n with_o the_o earth_n that_o they_o embrace_v it_o and_o as_o it_o be_v kiss_v it_o in_o their_o affection_n as_o a_o mother_n out_o of_o who_o womb_n they_o have_v their_o beginning_n although_o the_o oracle_n of_o god_n word_n condemn_v this_o folly_n and_o teach_v they_o that_o god_n kingdom_n that_o apprehend_v better_a thing_n we_o may_v make_v better_a account_n of_o these_o sect_n 5._o v._o in_o as_o much_o as_o god_n make_v our_o body_n we_o must_v yield_v up_o our_o body_n to_o his_o service_n for_o god_n make_v all_o thing_n for_o himself_o say_v the_o scripture_n he_o make_v not_o the_o body_n for_o the_o devil_n nor_o for_o the_o world_n nor_o for_o lust_n nor_o for_o drunkenness_n but_o for_o himself_o let_v we_o well_o consider_v this_o and_o learn_v to_o give_v god_n his_o due_n the_o idolater_n will_v bow_v with_o his_o body_n to_o idol_n and_o say_v that_o he_o keep_v his_o heart_n to_o god_n but_o he_o must_v know_v that_o god_n make_v the_o body_n as_o well_o as_o the_o soul_n and_o if_o he_o make_v all_o thing_n for_o himself_o than_o the_o body_n as_o well_o as_o any_o other_o thing_n the_o profane_a person_n that_o abuse_v his_o tongue_n to_o swear_v wanton_a wicked_a discourse_n to_o rail_v scoff_a etc._n etc._n the_o adulterer_n which_o sin_v against_o the_o whole_a body_n as_o the_o apostle_n show_v the_o drunkard_n who_o abuse_v his_o body_n to_o excess_n of_o swill_v and_o drink_v the_o wanton_a that_o abuse_v his_o eye_n to_o careless_a wander_a and_o open_v his_o ear_n to_o vanity_n he_o that_o please_v his_o palate_n and_o love_v his_o pleasure_n more_o than_o god_n he_o that_o think_v his_o body_n give_v he_o for_o no_o other_o purpose_n but_o either_o to_o drudge_n about_o earthly_a thing_n or_o to_o â—ast_v of_o earthly_a delight_n even_o such_o a_o one_o be_v apt_a to_o say_v he_o have_v a_o good_a heart_n towards_o god_n but_o be_v not_o deceive_v god_n make_v this_o body_n for_o himself_o and_o therefore_o we_o must_v not_o abuse_v any_o part_n of_o the_o body_n to_o his_o dishonour_n nor_o make_v any_o member_n of_o it_o a_o instrument_n of_o unrighteousness_n but_o to_o give_v up_o the_o member_n of_o our_o body_n as_o instrument_n of_o righteousness_n unto_o holiness_n let_v we_o not_o think_v a_o little_a pain_n of_o the_o body_n too_o much_o to_o bestow_v in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n in_o hear_v the_o word_n in_o prayer_n in_o humiliation_n etc._n etc._n but_o let_v himself_o have_v build_v for_o thy_o soul_n to_o dwell_v in_o let_v the_o life_n and_o body_n of_o another_o be_v precious_a in_o thy_o sight_n and_o do_v thy_o endeavour_n to_o preserve_v it_o and_o let_v we_o know_v that_o in_o some_o case_n not_o to_o save_v life_n be_v to_o destroy_v viz._n when_o there_o be_v special_a mean_n call_v and_o opportunity_n to_o do_v it_o in_o time_n of_o necessity_n some_o mean_n must_v be_v use_v to_o prevent_v the_o famish_v of_o many_o therefore_o at_o such_o time_n we_o shall_v free_o give_v without_o grudge_v to_o the_o relief_n of_o other_o remember_v that_o it_o be_v for_o the_o preservation_n of_o those_o body_n which_o god_n have_v make_v and_o let_v this_o keep_v thou_o from_o lay_v violent_a hand_n on_o thy_o own_o body_n it_o be_v a_o loud_a cry_a sin_n to_o destroy_v another_o body_n because_o god_n have_v make_v it_o but_o most_o horrible_a to_o destroy_v thy_o own_o since_o god_n have_v make_v it_o and_o have_v give_v thou_o a_o special_a charge_n to_o keep_v it_o moreover_o since_o god_n have_v make_v the_o body_n let_v we_o rely_v upon_o he_o for_o the_o maintenance_n of_o the_o body_n he_o have_v make_v it_o and_o he_o will_v keep_v it_o he_o have_v give_v a_o mouth_n and_o he_o will_v give_v meat_n he_o have_v give_v a_o back_n and_o he_o will_v clothe_v it_o thus_o may_v a_o christian_a that_o have_v recover_v his_o forfeiture_n in_o christ_n reason_n from_o the_o love_n and_o promise_v of_o god_n and_o therefore_o in_o hard_a time_n our_o want_n shall_v be_v special_a motive_n to_o drive_v we_o home_o to_o god_n through_o christ_n that_o be_v in_o he_o we_o may_v assure_v ourselves_o of_o all_o needful_a supply_n for_o the_o body_n from_o his_o hand_n that_o make_v it_o there_o be_v not_o the_o poor_a among_o we_o but_o if_o they_o will_v effectual_o turn_v to_o god_n and_o depend_v upon_o he_o they_o shall_v find_v they_o have_v no_o cause_n to_o despair_v in_o regard_n of_o bodily_a help_n they_o this_o shall_v teach_v thou_o to_o mind_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v above_o to_o be_v heavenly-minded_n it_o be_v a_o great_a shame_n that_o the_o body_n shall_v look_v upward_o and_o the_o soul_n and_o affection_n bend_v downward_o to_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o earth_n there_o be_v many_o time_n a_o upright_a body_n and_o curva_n interras_fw-la anima_fw-la a_o crook-backed_a soul_n lean_v towards_o the_o earth_n so_o that_o whereas_o the_o soul_n shall_v raise_v the_o body_n and_o make_v it_o the_o better_a because_o of_o its_o union_n with_o a_o immortal_a spirit_n it_o rather_o
bodily_a sense_n but_o by_o this_o spiritual_a faculty_n of_o the_o soul._n by_o this_o the_o lord_n have_v make_v man_n able_a to_o search_v into_o the_o hide_a cause_n of_o thing_n and_o to_o see_v he_o in_o his_o work_n by_o this_o he_o have_v enable_v he_o to_o get_v the_o knowledge_n of_o art_n and_o science_n of_o trade_n and_o deal_n etc._n etc._n 2._o there_o be_v a_o act_n of_o invention_n by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o understanding_n find_v out_o many_o particular_n belong_v to_o some_o general_n invention_n and_o find_v out_o one_o by_o another_o like_a unto_o it_o so_o in_o matter_n of_o trade_n god_n have_v give_v this_o power_n of_o invention_n to_o the_o understanding_n whereby_o trade_n be_v perfect_v and_o new_a addition_n of_o skill_n and_o art_n be_v add_v to_o they_o and_o so_o in_o the_o learned_a science_n 3._o there_o be_v judgement_n whereby_o the_o understanding_n pass_v its_o sentence_n and_o give_v its_o determination_n upon_o thing_n concern_v their_o nature_n judgement_n truth_n and_o goodness_n 4_o there_o be_v a_o power_n of_o discourse_n prove_v one_o thing_n by_o another_o this_o be_v so_o therefore_o it_o be_v so_o the_o sun_n be_v up_o discourse_n therefore_o it_o be_v day_n the_o day_n be_v lengthen_v therefore_o the_o sun_n be_v pass_v the_o winter_n solstice_n etc._n etc._n none_o of_o these_o be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o any_o unreasonable_a creature_n sect_n 2._o the_o will_n be_v another_o principal_a faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n choose_v or_o refuse_v free_o good_a or_o evil_n will._n and_o as_o the_o understanding_n be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o eye_n so_o the_o will_n be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o heart_n of_o the_o soul._n for_o although_o the_o understanding_n see_v never_o so_o clear_o what_o be_v good_a yet_o unless_o the_o will_v agree_v and_o give_v its_o consent_n it_o be_v not_o follow_v the_o understanding_n be_v like_o one_o that_o give_v good_a counsel_n but_o if_o the_o will_v be_v obstinate_a it_o be_v not_o follow_v he_o that_o know_v his_o master_n will_n and_o do_v it_o not_o to_o he_o it_o be_v sin_n so_o that_o you_o see_v a_o man_n may_v know_v and_o not_o do_v now_o in_o such_o a_o case_n a_o man_n understanding_n agree_v with_o god_n will_n for_o he_o both_o know_v what_o god_n will_v have_v do_v and_o know_v it_o to_o be_v good_n but_o his_o will_n cross_v both_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o his_o own_o understanding_n which_o be_v the_o aggravation_n of_o sin_n and_o increase_v the_o stripe_n now_o the_o act_n of_o the_o will_v be_v in_o general_n two_o to_o will_n or_o to_o choose_v to_z will_v or_o to_o refuse_n now_o in_o these_o two_o faculty_n there_o be_v two_o other_o seated_z as_o freewill_n and_o conscience_n freewill_n be_v a_o faculty_n of_o the_o mind_n whereby_o the_o will_n without_o constraint_n do_v willing_o choose_v or_o refuse_v what_o the_o understanding_n discover_v to_o be_v good_a or_o evil_n for_o all_o the_o power_n of_o man_n can_v compel_v the_o will_n to_o embrace_v or_o refuse_v what_o it_o will_v not_o refuse_v or_o embrace_v the_o outward_a man_n may_v be_v force_v against_o the_o will_n the_o tongue_n may_v be_v force_v the_o hand_n may_v be_v force_v but_o no_o tyrant_n in_o the_o world_n can_v force_v the_o will._n and_o hence_o come_v that_o unmoveable_a resolution_n of_o god_n child_n in_o the_o profession_n of_o the_o gospel_n even_o from_o the_o invincible_a freedom_n of_o the_o will_n sanctify_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n it_o be_v true_a it_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n be_v the_o cause_n but_o the_o spirit_n be_v please_v to_o make_v this_o use_n of_o man_n will_n and_o of_o that_o liberty_n which_o he_o himself_o give_v man_n at_o his_o creation_n again_o on_o the_o other_o side_n the_o will_n of_o man_n may_v be_v bring_v to_o cover_v its_o own_o inclination_n and_o outward_o be_v bring_v to_o conform_v to_o the_o constrain_a power_n of_o other_o but_o the_o inward_a take_v away_o man_n spiritual_a life_n consist_v in_o the_o image_n of_o god_n and_o the_o holiness_n of_o his_o nature_n yet_o it_o do_v but_o forfeit_n for_o the_o present_a and_o not_o actual_o bereave_v he_o of_o his_o natural_a life_n nor_o the_o natural_a power_n of_o his_o soul_n by_o which_o he_o live_v so_o then_o there_o be_v no_o question_n but_o man_n in_o the_o state_n of_o sin_n drunkenness_n etc._n etc._n yet_o with_o exception_n that_o many_o particular_n through_o custom_n and_o company_n &c_n &c_n may_v be_v so_o enthrall_v to_o some_o lust_n that_o the_o exercise_n of_o this_o freedom_n of_o will_n be_v even_o whole_o smother_v in_o they_o and_o can_v show_v itself_o but_o be_v strong_o clog_v and_o keep_v down_o but_o yet_o that_o which_o their_o will_n choose_v it_o free_o choose_v still_o but_o now_o on_o the_o other_o side_n it_o have_v not_o liberty_n unto_o spiritual_a and_o supernatural_a thing_n it_o may_v free_o entertain_v the_o use_n of_o outward_a mean_n and_o ordinance_n but_o it_o have_v not_o free_a power_n to_o believe_v aright_o to_o change_v itself_o to_o purge_v itself_o from_o the_o stain_n of_o nature_n to_o repent_v etc._n etc._n all_o these_o must_v come_v from_o above_o none_o but_o god_n can_v make_v his_o image_n in_o man_n when_o man_n and_o satan_n have_v deface_v it_o but_o if_o the_o son_n shall_v make_v you_o free_a then_o be_v you_o free_a indeed_o if_o the_o son_n of_o god_n shall_v by_o his_o spirit_n of_o liberty_n infuse_v into_o we_o deliver_v we_o from_o the_o thraldom_n of_o sin_n and_o satan_n and_o perfection_n and_o then_o remember_v that_o as_o it_o have_v be_v so_o all_o its_o excellency_n and_o beauty_n be_v from_o the_o lord_n and_o therefore_o suffer_v not_o any_o thing_n belong_v to_o the_o earth_n not_o any_o thing_n that_o partake_v of_o it_o or_o be_v of_o kin_n unto_o it_o to_o draw_v away_o thy_o heart_n from_o he_o who_o give_v it_o all_o that_o it_o have_v let_v not_o that_o again_o barren_a tree_n be_v cut_v down_o by_o the_o provident_a husbandman_n that_o they_o may_v not_o cumber_v the_o ground_n as_o you_o see_v in_o the_o gospel_n which_o shall_v move_v we_o by_o refreshment_n from_o the_o dew_n and_o rain_n but_o if_o it_o be_v cut_v off_o from_o the_o tree_n the_o sweet_a shower_n can_v preserve_v it_o from_o be_v wither_v he_o that_o be_v true_o unite_v to_o christ_n as_o a_o branch_n to_o the_o root_n by_o the_o spirit_n and_o faith_n he_o receive_v benefit_n growth_n and_o spiritual_a refreshment_n from_o the_o outward_a mean_n of_o grace_n the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n and_o sacrament_n but_o if_o he_o be_v not_o true_o unite_v to_o he_o the_o sweet_a dew_n that_o ever_o fall_v from_o heaven_n can_v keep_v spiritual_a life_n within_o he_o on_o the_o other_o side_n though_o the_o branch_n do_v receive_v life_n and_o nourishment_n from_o the_o root_n yet_o it_o want_v refreshment_n from_o the_o shower_n of_o heaven_n so_o those_o fanatical_a dreamer_n be_v to_o be_v condemn_v who_o pretend_v a_o union_n with_o christ_n and_o partake_v of_o his_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o brag_v they_o have_v no_o need_n of_o the_o word_n preach_v or_o any_o outward_a mean_n again_o let_v the_o renew_n of_o the_o face_n of_o the_o earth_n by_o these_o creature_n every_o spring_n put_v thou_o in_o mind_n of_o the_o wonderful_a efficacy_n of_o god_n his_o word_n which_o from_o the_o beginning_n unto_o this_o present_a time_n have_v make_v the_o earth_n thus_o fruitful_a and_o let_v it_o teach_v thou_o to_o rely_v upon_o light_n which_o be_v before_o diffuse_v through_o the_o huge_a space_n of_o the_o creation_n be_v now_o as_o it_o be_v draw_v together_o into_o one_o body_n of_o the_o sun_n as_o a_o full_a and_o common_a treasury_n consider_v here_o that_o the_o lord_n who_o be_v in_o himself_o infinite_o more_o bright_a than_o the_o light_n itself_o need_v no_o light_n in_o respect_n of_o himself_o and_o worldly_a wise_n or_o learned_a but_o unsanctified_a think_v rather_o that_o as_o no_o spectacle_n can_v make_v that_o eye_n to_o see_v that_o be_v altogether_o blind_a so_o no_o help_n of_o humane_a learning_n natural_a sharpness_n of_o wit_n etc._n etc._n can_v make_v that_o man_n that_o be_v spiritual_o blind_a right_o and_o save_o to_o discern_v spiritual_a thing_n if_o there_o be_v some_o light_n in_o the_o eye_n thoâ—gh_v but_o dim_v it_o may_v be_v help_v and_o further_v by_o such_o outward_a mean_n so_o if_o there_o be_v some_o light_n of_o the_o enlighten_v sanctify_a spirit_n and_o â—he_v mind_n then_o thâ—se_a outward_a help_n of_o secular_a leaâ—â—ing_n art_n tongue_n natural_a quickness_n of_o wit_n etc._n etc._n may_v be_v of_o great_a and_o excellent_a use_n and_o must_v not_o be_v despise_v 9_o again_o consider_v that_o as_o there_o be_v great_a difference_n in_o the_o cleverness_n of_o the_o light_n between_o such_o a_o day_n when_o the_o sunbeam_n be_v intercept_v by_o a_o thick_a mist_n or_o dark_a cloud_n and_o then_o when_o it_o shine_v bright_o through_o a_o clear_a air_n so_o when_o the_o light_n of_o heavenly_a truth_n be_v dim_v by_o a_o thick_a mist_n of_o jewish_a ceremony_n when_o a_o cloud_n be_v in_o the_o most_o holy_a place_n even_o before_o the_o oracle_n and_o ark_n of_o god_n presence_n when_o the_o veil_n be_v whole_a and_o not_o rend_v asunder_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n be_v not_o so_o clear_a the_o mystery_n of_o grace_n not_o so_o plain_o unfold_v by_o many_o degree_n as_o now_o since_o our_o saviour_n come_v when_o there_o be_v no_o impediment_n and_o this_o shall_v stir_v thou_o up_o to_o thankfulness_n every_o sun-shiny_a day_n shall_v make_v thou_o lift_v up_o a_o thankful_a heart_n with_o feel_a affection_n shall_v learn_v to_o bless_v god_n for_o every_o faculty_n of_o our_o soul_n we_o be_v too_o unthankful_a for_o all_o sort_n of_o mercy_n but_o yet_o more_o apt_a to_o give_v thanks_o at_o least_o outward_o for_o thing_n without_o we_o than_o for_o those_o more_o excellent_a thing_n within_o we_o thus_o many_o a_o one_o say_v i_o thank_v god_n for_o health_n for_o meat_n and_o drink_n etc._n etc._n that_o never_o not_o so_o much_o as_o in_o word_n do_v give_v he_o thanks_o for_o his_o soul_n and_o the_o several_a faculty_n of_o it_o how_o seldom_o have_v god_n any_o praise_n for_o our_o understanding_n our_o judgement_n our_o memory_n our_o reason_n will_n and_o affection_n how_o lame_a will_v our_o soul_n be_v without_o the_o will_n and_o affection_n how_o blind_a without_o reason_n memory_n or_o understanding_n yet_o how_o unthankful_a be_v we_o to_o he_o that_o make_v they_o we_o shall_v râ—ckon_v these_o among_o the_o chief_a of_o god_n blessing_n next_o to_o the_o sanctify_a grace_n of_o god_n spirit_n and_o according_o show_v our_o thankfulness_n for_o they_o to_o his_o glory_n sect_n 2._o ii_o in_o as_o much_o as_o the_o soul_n be_v more_o excellent_a by_o its_o yet_o never_o complain_v of_o weakness_n we_o can_v suffer_v mortal_a disease_n most_o dangerous_a corruption_n to_o grow_v upon_o our_o soul_n and_o never_o see_v our_o need_n of_o spiritual_a physic_n how_o many_o a_o soul_n be_v swell_v with_o pride_n and_o overgrow_v with_o vile_a affection_n and_o yet_o no_o care_n be_v take_v of_o it_o but_o it_o be_v let_v alone_o as_o if_o all_o be_v whereas_o even_a reason_n may_v teach_v we_o that_o the_o soul_n be_v a_o thousand_o time_n better_o than_o the_o body_n and_o the_o misery_n of_o the_o soul_n incomparable_o beyond_o the_o punishment_n that_o can_v befall_v the_o body_n in_o this_o life_n let_v we_o then_o labour_v to_o prevent_v the_o everlasting_a destruction_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o fear_v it_o more_o than_o a_o thousand_o death_n of_o the_o body_n if_o it_o can_v possible_o endure_v so_o many_o think_v that_o a_o precious_a thing_n that_o weigh_v more_o than_o the_o whole_a earth_n in_o the_o balance_n of_o the_o sanctuary_n and_o the_o judgement_n of_o christ._n what_o shall_v it_o profit_v a_o man_n to_o gain_v the_o whole_a world_n and_o lose_v his_o own_o soul_n oh_o learn_v to_o prize_v thy_o soul_n a_o precious_a creature_n and_o immortal_a spirit_n and_o make_v it_o appear_v thou_o make_v more_o reckon_a of_o it_o than_o of_o thy_o body_n thy_o body_n be_v but_o a_o small_a piece_n of_o earth_n but_o the_o whole_a earth_n be_v not_o able_a to_o bring_v forth_o or_o yield_v matter_n for_o one_o soul_n which_o be_v of_o a_o high_a nature_n sect_n 3._o iii_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o also_o than_o heaven_n mortality_n more_o excellent_a than_o immortality_n and_o a_o lump_n of_o flesh_n more_o worth_a than_o a_o spiritual_a be_v now_o man_n be_v so_o far_o from_o esteem_v that_o best_a which_o be_v do_v for_o the_o good_a of_o the_o soul_n that_o they_o account_v those_o admonition_n and_o reproof_n which_o be_v tender_v to_o they_o for_o this_o purpose_n the_o great_a sign_n of_o ill-will_n that_o any_o man_n can_v show_v to_o other_o no_o man_n be_v account_v a_o worse_a neighbour_n than_o he_o that_o will_v seek_v to_o pluck_v man_n soul_n as_o brand_n out_o of_o the_o
