yet_o we_o must_v know_v that_o reason_n reign_v not_o over_o will_n as_o lady_n and_o princess_n but_o only_o as_o mistress_n to_o teach_v and_o show_v it_o what_o it_o ought_v to_o follow_v and_o what_o to_o fly_v from_o for_o the_o will_n have_v no_o light_n of_o itself_o but_o be_v lighten_v by_o the_o mind_n will._n that_o be_v to_o say_v by_o reason_n and_o judgement_n which_o be_v join_v with_o it_o not_o to_o govern_v and_o turn_v it_o from_o one_o side_n to_o another_o by_o commandment_n and_o authority_n either_o by_o force_n or_o violence_n as_o a_o prince_n or_o magistrate_n be_v to_o be_v desire_v or_o disdain_v therefore_o the_o act_n of_o will_n proceed_v indeed_o from_o will_n but_o it_o be_v judge_v of_o and_o counsel_v by_o reason_n so_o that_o a_o man_n may_v say_v with_o great_a torment_n and_o grief_n insomuch_o that_o either_o it_o must_v consume_v away_o and_o perish_v or_o else_o return_v to_o his_o due_a order_n and_o place_n and_o the_o will_n must_v of_o the_o heart_n be_v oftentimes_o take_v in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n for_o the_o midst_n 40._o or_o for_o the_o inward_a and_o secret_a part_n of_o a_o thing_n as_o when_o it_o speak_v of_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o of_o the_o sea_n and_o of_o the_o heaven_n now_o as_o we_o have_v hear_v how_o reason_n have_v his_o throne_n and_o judicial_a seat_n in_o the_o brain_n what_o minister_n and_o what_o secretary_n he_o have_v near_o about_o he_o and_o in_o what_o chamber_n and_o lodging_n they_o be_v place_v as_o also_o what_o minister_n and_o officer_n be_v join_v with_o he_o for_o the_o execution_n of_o his_o judgement_n and_o decree_n namely_o the_o will_n and_o the_o affection_n so_o also_o we_o must_v consider_v what_o manner_n of_o lodging_n and_o habitation_n be_v assign_v to_o these_o latter_a sort_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o although_o these_o officer_n and_o minister_n be_v not_o always_o obedient_a to_o reason_n but_o rise_v up_o against_o it_o oftentimes_o and_o do_v clean_o contrary_a to_o that_o which_o it_o judge_v and_o appoint_v to_o be_v do_v yet_o by_o that_o order_n which_o god_n set_v down_o they_o be_v to_o obey_v and_o to_o agree_v well_o among_o themselves_o as_o he_o show_v it_o by_o the_o disposition_n of_o their_o lodging_n we_o have_v hear_v before_o that_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o lung_n be_v lodge_v within_o the_o breast_n as_o in_o a_o strong_a hold_n and_o be_v compass_v round_o about_o therewith_o for_o their_o safeguard_n and_o defence_n but_o we_o must_v note_v that_o there_o be_v a_o partition_n call_v diaphragma_n by_o the_o grecian_n use_n which_o separate_v the_o 〈◊〉_d of_o the_o vital_a part_n from_o the_o nourish_a part_n that_o be_v in_o the_o three_o belly_n and_o lodging_n of_o the_o part_n thereof_o it_o have_v two_o use_n of_o which_o the_o first_o and_o great_a be_v to_o be_v a_o instrument_n of_o breathe_v the_o second_o be_v to_o help_v to_o purge_v and_o expel_v the_o excrement_n of_o the_o body_n use_n next_o to_o that_o there_o be_v a_o tunicle_n or_o skin_n which_o be_v very_o thin_a and_o slender_a much_o like_a to_o a_o spider_n web_n &_o be_v spread_v over_o the_o whole_a capacity_n of_o the_o breast_n out_o of_o which_o two_o other_o proceed_v that_o divide_v it_o throughout_o to_o the_o end_n there_o may_v be_v two_o distinct_a place_n of_o receipt_n that_o if_o a_o man_n have_v some_o great_a wound_n in_o one_o part_n thereof_o whereby_o the_o office_n of_o respiration_n and_o breathe_v which_o it_o have_v shall_v utter_o perish_v yet_o the_o other_o part_n that_o be_v unhurt_a may_v at_o leastwise_o retain_v the_o one_o half_a these_o skin_n serve_v also_o to_o cover_v and_o bind_v together_o all_o the_o vessel_n and_o instrument_n a_o word_n a_o compasse-heart_n and_o therefore_o this_o skin_n be_v make_v of_o the_o same_o fashion_n the_o heart_n be_v namely_o very_o large_a and_o ample_a beneath_o but_o afterward_o it_o narrow_v by_o little_a and_o little_a so_o that_o it_o end_v pointwise_o heart_n be_v in_o proportion_n like_o to_o a_o pine_n apple_n or_o to_o a_o pyramid_n which_o be_v the_o figure_n of_o a_o the_o heart_n be_v of_o such_o capacity_n that_o it_o be_v sever_v from_o the_o same_o on_o every_o side_n as_o much_o as_o be_v requisite_a that_o his_o motion_n may_v in_o no_o wise_n be_v impeach_v some_o think_v that_o there_o be_v some_o water_n within_o this_o vessel_n heart_n or_o some_o moisture_n like_a to_o a_o dew_n to_o water_v the_o heart_n that_o it_o shall_v not_o dry_v up_o through_o the_o great_a heat_n that_o come_v of_o continual_a motion_n in_o which_o it_o be_v without_o cease_v now_o because_o this_o humour_n can_v be_v see_v but_o only_o in_o dead_a body_n there_o be_v that_o think_v it_o be_v make_v there_o only_o after_o death_n through_o the_o exhalation_n and_o gather_v together_o of_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v there_o dissolve_v and_o in_o deed_n it_o and_o alteration_n that_o it_o will_v be_v very_o hard_a for_o a_o man_n to_o give_v a_o right_a judgement_n nevertheless_o this_o may_v be_v know_v by_o cut_v up_o that_o part_n in_o some_o beast_n or_o other_o for_o there_o be_v always_o some_o moisture_n find_v there_o even_o before_o it_o be_v stark_o dead_a although_o indeed_o it_o can_v live_v long_o after_o that_o part_n be_v open_v but_o and_o end_n before_o speak_v of_o for_o the_o air_n that_o be_v to_o be_v bring_v to_o the_o heart_n be_v first_o prepare_v in_o the_o lung_n to_o the_o end_n it_o may_v moderate_v the_o heat_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o spirit_n and_o not_o enter_v in_o thither_o either_o too_o hot_a or_o too_o cold_a or_o in_o too_o great_a abundance_n whereby_o it_o may_v be_v damnify_v or_o quite_o choke_v up_o therefore_o have_v god_n make_v the_o flesh_n and_o substance_n of_o the_o lung_n very_a light_n soft_a and_o spongy_a more_o than_o any_o other_o part_n of_o the_o body_n so_o that_o it_o hold_v much_o of_o the_o nature_n
and_o evil_a to_o the_o end_n that_o all_o the_o action_n thereof_o may_v agree_v with_o these_o rule_n which_o be_v the_o beam_n of_o heavenly_a wisdom_n in_o ourselves_o for_o it_o be_v a_o order_n which_o god_n have_v so_o ordain_v &_o establish_v soul_n and_o forasmuch_o as_o the_o soul_n be_v to_o dwell_v in_o the_o body_n god_n give_v unto_o it_o this_o natural_a power_n of_o the_o affection_n that_o it_o may_v be_v waken_v and_o stir_v up_o by_o they_o as_o it_o be_v with_o prick_v thereby_o to_o be_v keep_v from_o idleness_n and_o from_o be_v lull_v asleep_a and_o oppress_v with_o the_o heaviness_n of_o the_o body_n and_o so_o neglect_v all_o care_n of_o good_a thing_n &_o of_o that_o which_o be_v very_o expedient_a &_o profitable_a for_o itself_o for_o this_o cause_n the_o soul_n have_v her_o affection_n of_o which_o some_o serve_v for_o spur_n to_o prick_v she_o hither_o &_o thither_o &_o as_o often_o as_o need_n require_v other_o serve_v for_o a_o bridle_n to_o keep_v her_o back_n &_o to_o stay_v she_o from_o rush_v unto_o evil_n &_o from_o follow_v those_o thing_n that_o be_v hurtful_a for_o she_o and_o indeed_o we_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o such_o spurte_n and_o bridle_n but_o herein_o we_o err_v great_o in_o that_o we_o know_v not_o how_o to_o keep_v a_o moderation_n between_o these_o twain_o for_o because_o we_o make_v these_o spur_n too_o sharp_a and_o prick_v the_o horse_n too_o much_o which_o we_o have_v to_o guide_v the_o bridle_n on_o the_o other_o side_n be_v two_o grievous_a unto_o he_o so_o that_o he_o lift_v up_o and_o gird_v forward_o over_o furious_o and_o this_o come_v to_o pass_v because_o we_o do_v not_o content_v ourselves_o with_o that_o which_o be_v requisite_a for_o the_o succour_v of_o our_o natural_a necessity_n but_o we_o add_v there_o unto_o infinite_a superfluity_n for_o upon_o some_o light_a necessity_n that_o may_v soon_o be_v dispatch_v we_o torment_v ourselves_o a_o great_a deal_n more_o than_o need_n be_v because_o we_o persuade_v ourselves_o that_o our_o necessity_n be_v great_a than_o they_o be_v and_o so_o seek_v after_o more_o remedy_n and_o help_n than_o be_v requisite_a of_o this_o we_o have_v daily_a experience_n in_o that_o care_n which_o we_o take_v for_o thing_n necessary_a for_o this_o life_n which_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o we_o burn_v continual_o with_o insatiable_a covetousness_n which_o be_v such_o a_o marvelous_a spur_n unto_o we_o that_o we_o take_v very_o little_a rest_n for_o it_o for_o if_o we_o will_v be_v content_v with_o enough_o it_o will_v not_o put_v we_o to_o that_o torment_n which_o we_o daily_o suffer_v wind_n but_o nothing_o suffice_v we_o and_o therefore_o the_o affection_n be_v in_o our_o soul_n as_o the_o wind_n upon_o the_o sea_n for_o some_o wind_n be_v very_o small_a and_o move_v the_o water_n but_o a_o little_a other_o be_v more_o vehement_a and_o raise_v up_o certain_a wave_n and_o some_o again_o be_v so_o tempestuous_a and_o make_v such_o horrible_a storm_n and_o gust_n whereby_o the_o sea_n be_v so_o move_v that_o sea_n and_o sand_n and_o fish_n and_o all_o seem_v to_o be_v turn_v topsy_n toruie_o the_o like_a may_v be_v say_v of_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o some_o be_v so_o light_a that_o they_o seem_v to_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o small_a beginning_n of_o move_v there_o be_v other_o strong_a which_v move_v it_o somewhat_o more_o and_o some_o also_o be_v so_o violent_a that_o they_o altogether_o trouble_v the_o soul_n even_o in_o such_o a_o vehement_a manner_n that_o they_o drive_v she_o from_o her_o seat_n of_o judgement_n therefore_o these_o two_o first_o kind_n of_o motion_n be_v proper_o call_v affection_n and_o the_o other_o that_o be_v so_o violent_a be_v term_v commotion_n and_o perturbation_n perturbation_n for_o they_o bring_v a_o kind_n of_o blindness_n with_o they_o which_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o judgement_n and_o reason_n see_v never_o a_o whit_n whereupon_o it_o follow_v see_v neither_o reason_n nor_o judgement_n bear_v any_o more_o rule_n that_o the_o soul_n be_v as_o if_o she_o have_v no_o more_o power_n over_o herself_o but_o be_v subject_a to_o the_o jurisdiction_n of_o some_o other_o the_o grecian_n term_v such_o affection_n with_o a_o word_n that_o signify_v as_o much_o as_o if_o we_o shall_v say_v passion_n and_o in_o deed_n we_o common_o say_v that_o a_o man_n be_v passionate_a when_o he_o be_v torment_v by_o such_o violent_a affection_n for_o as_o the_o whole_a body_n suffer_v when_o it_o be_v move_v or_o thrust_v too_o and_o fro_o and_o strike_v on_o every_o side_n so_o be_v it_o with_o the_o soul_n beeng_v violent_o move_v every_o way_n and_o as_o the_o move_n be_v more_o or_o less_o moderate_a so_o she_o suffer_v more_o or_o less_o and_o if_o the_o motion_n be_v very_o violent_a confusion_n follow_v thereupon_o now_o for_o the_o sequel_n of_o this_o speech_n let_v we_o consider_v how_o the_o affection_n be_v more_o or_o less_o moderate_a according_a to_o the_o disposition_n of_o the_o judgement_n and_o what_o be_v the_o spring_n and_o original_n of_o so_o many_o sundry_a affection_n as_o we_o see_v in_o man_n it_o belong_v then_o to_o thou_o aram_n to_o handle_v this_o matter_n that_o according_a to_o the_o dispposition_n of_o the_o judgement_n the_o affection_n be_v more_o or_o less_o moderate_a or_o immoderate_a of_o the_o cause_n of_o all_o the_o motion_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o heart_n of_o the_o variety_n of_o affection_n of_o the_o generation_n nature_n and_o kind_n of_o they_o chap._n 43._o aram._n whatsoever_o we_o do_v or_o wish_v for_o we_o do_v or_o desire_v it_o for_o some_o good_a whether_o that_o which_o we_o judge_v to_o be_v good_a be_v so_o in_o truth_n or_o in_o opinion_n only_o and_o therein_o we_o resemble_v god_n our_o creator_n who_o be_v not_o only_o good_a but_o also_o goodness_n itself_o even_o the_o perfection_n of_o all_o good_a wherefore_o if_o we_o desire_v to_o know_v what_o be_v the_o true_a good_a we_o must_v understand_v that_o there_o be_v but_o one_o only_a true_a good_a even_o the_o same_o by_o participation_n of_o which_o we_o be_v first_o make_v good_a and_o then_o of_o good_a most_o happy_a for_o we_o can_v be_v happy_a and_o bless_a which_o be_v the_o end_n we_o all_o look_v for_o but_o we_o must_v first_o become_v good_a for_o as_o there_o be_v no_o true_a felicity_n and_o blessedness_n but_o in_o good_a be_v the_o source_n and_o fountain_n yea_o the_o perfection_n of_o all_o happiness_n and_o contentation_n so_o also_o there_o be_v no_o felicity_n nor_o bless_v due_n but_o in_o goodness_n which_o be_v as_o proper_a to_o god_n as_o his_o very_a divinity_n because_o that_o as_o he_o can_v be_v god_n except_o he_o be_v good_a so_o he_o can_v be_v good_a with_o that_o goodness_n that_o be_v in_o he_o but_o he_o must_v be_v god_n and_o as_o he_o be_v the_o essence_n of_o all_o essence_n so_o he_o be_v the_o essential_a good_a and_o the_o essential_a goodness_n of_o all_o good_n and_o of_o all_o goodness_n but_o although_o our_o nature_n do_v of_o itself_o always_o tend_v to_o that_o which_o be_v good_a as_o we_o have_v show_v in_o the_o handle_n of_o the_o chief_a power_n of_o the_o soul_n understanding_n and_o will_v nevertheless_o we_o differ_v much_o nay_o we_o be_v clean_o contrary_a to_o god_n when_o we_o come_v to_o the_o election_n of_o good_a because_o of_o the_o bad_a judgement_n we_o have_v by_o reason_n of_o the_o darkness_n of_o ignorance_n wherewith_o our_o mind_n be_v blind_v hereof_o it_o come_v that_o the_o more_o the_o judgement_n be_v corrupt_v infect_a and_o deep_o plunge_v in_o the_o flesh_n affection_n the_o more_o evil_a and_o carnal_a be_v the_o affection_n the_o more_o in_o number_n and_o the_o more_o violent_a yea_o such_o as_o do_v not_o only_o trouble_v and_o pervert_v the_o internal_a sense_n of_o the_o soul_n but_o the_o external_a sense_n also_o of_o the_o body_n this_o we_o may_v observe_v in_o they_o that_o be_v carry_v away_o with_o love_n who_o think_v oftentimes_o and_o be_v very_o persuade_v that_o they_o see_v and_o hear_v those_o thing_n which_o indeed_o be_v nothing_o so_o contrariwise_o the_o pure_a the_o judgement_n be_v and_o the_o high_a it_o be_v lift_v up_o from_o the_o flesh_n and_o from_o the_o earth_n the_o feweâ—_n and_o light_a be_v the_o affection_n which_o trouble_n and_o molest_v it_o for_o than_o it_o take_v great_a heed_n and_o mark_v what_o truth_n or_o what_o falsehood_n what_o good_a or_o what_o evil_n there_o be_v in_o all_o thing_n whereupon_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o the_o judgement_n be_v not_o so_o often_o nor_o so_o easy_o move_v and_o when_o it_o be_v move_v it_o be_v not_o so_o violent_a nor_o heady_a but_o more_o mature_a
that_o behold_v it_o so_o we_o may_v in_o some_o sort_n know_v our_o evil_n when_o it_o begin_v first_o but_o when_o it_o have_v gather_v full_a force_n it_o whole_o dim_v our_o reason_n beginning_n and_o yield_v to_o no_o counsel_n therefore_o before_o any_o passion_n grow_v to_o be_v strong_a we_o must_v labour_v that_o whatsoever_o shall_v be_v rash_o desire_v may_v be_v suppress_v by_o a_o prudent_a and_o a_o advise_a discourse_n we_o have_v hear_v by_o our_o former_a speech_n be_v that_o desire_n and_o covet_v be_v a_o appetite_n or_o longing_n to_o obtain_v some_o good_a which_o we_o our_o life_n the_o necessity_n and_o want_n of_o these_o be_v fit_o call_v natural_a and_o aught_o rather_o in_o deed_n to_o be_v term_v appetite_n than_o desire_n in_o the_o number_n of_o these_o good_n be_v meat_n life_n drink_n clothing_n dwell_v place_n physic_n fire_n water_n &_o such_o like_a thing_n which_o man_n life_n can_v be_v without_o therefore_o our_o appetite_n to_o these_o thing_n be_v awaken_v as_o it_o be_v by_o a_o certain_a natural_a instigation_n which_o prick_v and_o provoke_v the_o soul_n to_o make_v it_o desire_v &_o seek_v they_o so_o that_o they_o stay_v not_o until_o judgement_n have_v give_v sentence_n but_o proceed_v on_o forward_o as_o we_o may_v see_v by_o experience_n in_o hunger_n and_o thirst_n it_o be_v not_o therefore_o without_o cause_n say_v that_o the_o belly_n have_v no_o ear_n but_o there_o be_v other_o good_n not_o altogether_o so_o necessary_a for_o man_n life_n which_o yet_o we_o can_v be_v without_o when_o need_n require_v and_o sense_n the_o desire_n of_o these_o thing_n be_v not_o to_o be_v condemn_v see_v they_o be_v natural_a also_o provide_v always_o that_o moderation_n be_v keep_v in_o they_o for_o god_n have_v not_o create_v any_o creature_n which_o he_o will_v not_o have_v man_n to_o use_v so_o that_o he_o abuse_v it_o not_o but_o be_v content_v with_o those_o pleasure_n which_o he_o permit_v unto_o he_o keep_v himself_o within_o the_o limit_n thereof_o and_o fall_v into_o no_o excess_n neither_o lash_n out_o beyond_o all_o reason_n and_o measure_n there_o be_v yet_o a_o other_o sort_n of_o good_n whereof_o nay_o they_o be_v so_o far_o from_o perform_v this_o that_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o believe_v how_o troublesome_a it_o be_v to_o the_o spirit_n to_o search_v and_o find_v they_o out_o and_o to_o obtain_v &_o keep_v they_o covetousness_n for_o after_o that_o ambition_n and_o covetousness_n be_v once_o move_v and_o prick_v forward_o through_o false_a opinion_n and_o vain_a judgement_n they_o grow_v and_o wax_v disorder_v out_o of_o measure_n for_o the_o spirit_n think_v in_o itself_o that_o if_o once_o it_o can_v get_v either_o those_o honour_n and_o glory_n or_o that_o money_n and_o riches_n which_o it_o wish_v for_o it_o shall_v be_v very_o happy_a and_o live_v at_o great_a ease_n and_o rest_n but_o when_o it_o have_v obtain_v that_o it_o be_v not_o only_o in_o the_o same_o estate_n wherein_o it_o be_v before_o but_o oftentimes_o far_o worse_a and_o less_o content_v the_o reason_n be_v because_o the_o spirit_n consider_v not_o that_o those_o thing_n which_o it_o labour_v to_o get_v be_v unable_a of_o their_o own_o nature_n to_o afford_v that_o which_o it_o require_v of_o they_o whereupon_o not_o know_v his_o own_o vice_n and_o foolish_a imagination_n it_o it_o persuade_v that_o this_o fall_v out_o so_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o greatness_n &_o excellency_n of_o that_o thing_n whereunto_o it_o aspire_v and_o therefore_o not_o have_v get_v so_o much_o as_o be_v requisite_a full_o to_o satisfy_v the_o desire_n it_o have_v it_o settle_v itself_o to_o get_v more_o and_o when_o it_o have_v proceed_v in_o this_o sort_n yet_o be_v it_o always_o new_a to_o begin_v be_v as_o far_o from_o contentation_n yea_o a_o great_a deal_n further_o than_o it_o be_v before_o so_o that_o we_o may_v conclude_v that_o desire_n or_o covet_v be_v bottomless_a and_o void_a hear_v and_o these_o place_n albeit_o they_o serve_v especial_o to_o purge_v several_a humour_n as_o have_v be_v tell_v we_o yet_o oftentimes_o they_o void_v they_o altogether_o both_o by_o reason_n of_o their_o mingle_n and_o conjunction_n as_o of_o their_o over_o great_a abundance_n yea_o many_o time_n they_o be_v so_o plentiful_a namely_o the_o phlegmatic_a humour_n that_o because_o the_o
