I. 1 S Paul certifieth them of the good opinion which he had of their faith love and patience 11 and therewithal useth divers reasons for the comforting of them in persecution whereof the châ—efest is taken from the righteous judgement of God PAul and Silvanus and Timotheus unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ 2 Grace unto you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ 3 * â— Thes 3.2 3. II. 1 He willeth them to continue stedfast in the truth received 3 sheweth that there shall â—e a departure from the faith 9 and a discovery of Antichrist before the day of the Lord come 15 and thereupon repeateth his former exhortation and praâ—eth for them NOw we beseech you brethren by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ and by our gathering together unto him 2 That ye be not soon shaken in minde or be troubled neither by spirit nor by word nor by letter as from us as that the day of Christ is at hand 3 Let no man deceive you by any means for that day shall not come except there come a falling away first and that man of sin be revealed the son of perdition 4 Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God or that is worshipped so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God shewing himself that he is God 5 Remember ye not that when I was yet with you I told you these things 6 And now ye know what ‖ Or â—â—â—â—eth withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time 7 For the mystery of iniquity doth already work onely he who now letteth will let until he be taken out of the way 8 And then shall that wicked be revealed whom the Lord shall consume * Isa 11.4 Hos 6.5 Rev. 2 16. with the spirit of his mouth and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming 9 Even him whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish because they received not the love of the truth that they might be saved 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion that they should beleeve a lie 12 That they all might be damned who beleeved not the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness 13 But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you brethren beloved of the Lord because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit belief of the truth 14 Whereunto he called you by our gospel to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ 15 Therefore brethren stand fast and hold the traditions which ye have been taught whether by word or our epistle 16 Now our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God even our Father which hath loved us and hath given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace 17 Comfort your hearts and stablish you in every good word work CHAP. IV. 1 Christ talketh with a woman of Samaria and revealeth himself unto her 27 His disciples marvel 21 He declareth to them his zeal to Gods glory 39 Many Samaritans believe on him 43 He departeth into Galilee and healeth the rulers son that lay sick at Capernaum WHen therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized mo disciples then John 2 Though Jesus himself baptized not but his disciples 3 He left Judea and departed again into Galilee 4 And he must needs go through Samaria 5 Then cometh he to a city of Samaria which is called Sychar near to the parcel of ground * Gen. 33.19 48.22 Josh 24.32 that Jacob gave to his son Joseph 6 Now Jacobs well was there Jesus therefore being wearied with his journey sat thus on the well and it was about the sixth hour 7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water Jesus saith unto her Give me to drink 8 For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat 9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him How is it that thou being a Jew askest drink of me which am a woman of Samaria for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans 10 Jesus answered and said unto her If thou knewest the gift of God and who it is that saith to thee Give me to drink thou wouldest have asked of him and he would have given thee living water 11 The woman saith unto him Sir thou hast nothing to draw with and the well is deep from whence then hast thou that living water 12 Art thou greater then our father Jacob which gave us the well and drank thereof himself and his children and his cattel 13 Jesus answered and said unto her Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again 14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life 15 The woman saith unto him Sir give me this water that I thirst not neither come hither to draw 16 Jesus saith unto her Go call thy husband and come hither 17 The woman answered and said I have no husband Jesus said unto her Thou hast well said I have no husband 18 For thou hast had five husbands and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband in that saidst thou truly 19 The woman saith unto him Sir I perceive that thou art a prophet 20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain and ye say that in * Deut. 1 5. XVII 1 Christ prayeth to his Father to glorifie him 6 to preserve his apostles 11 in unity 17 and truth 20 to glorifie them and all other beleevers with him in heaven THese words spake Jesus and lift up his eyes to heaven and said Father the hour is come glorifie thy Son that thy Son also may glorifie thee 2 * Mat. 28.18 As thou hast given him power over all flesh that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him 3 And this is life eternal that they might know thee the onely true God and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent 4 I have glorified thee on the earth I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do 5 And now O Father glorifie thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was 6 I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world thine they were and thou gavest them me and they have kept thy word 7 Now they have known that all things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee 8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me and they have received them * Chap. 16.27 and have known surely that I came out from thee and they have beleeved that thou didst send me 9 I pray for them I pray not for the world but for them which thou hast given me for they are thine 10 And all mine are thine thine are mine
be blameless the husband of one wife vigilant sober ‖ Or modest of good behaviour given to hospitality apt to teach 3 ‖ Or Not ready to quarrel and offer wrong as one in wine Not given to wine no striker not greedy of filthy lucre but patient not a brawler not covetous 4 One that ruleth well his own house having his children in subjection with all gravity 5 For if a man know not how to rule his own house how shall he take care of the church of God 6 Not I a novice lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil 7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil 8 Likewise must the deacons be grave not double-tongued not given to much wine not greedy of filthy lucre 9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience 10 And let these also first be proved then let them use the office of a deacon being found blameless 11 Even to must their wives be grave not slanderers sober faithful in all things 12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife ruling their children and their own houses well 13 For they that have ‖ Or ministreâ—â— used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus 14 These things write I unto thee hoping to come unto thee shortly 15 But if I tarry long that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God which is the church of the living God the pillar and ‖ Or stay ground of the truth 16 And without controversie great is the mystery of godliness God was manifest in the flesh justified in the Spirit seen of angels preached unto the Gentiles beleeved on in the world received up into glory CHAP. IV. 1 He foretelleth that in the latter times there shall be a departure from the faith 6 And to the end that Timothy might not fail in doing his duty be furnisheth him with divers precepts belonging thereto NOw the Spirit speaketh expresly that * 2 Tim. 3.1 in the latter times some shall depart from the saith giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of devils 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisie having their conscience seared with a hot iron 3 Forbidding to marry and commanding to abstain from meats which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which beleeve and know the truth 4 For every creature of God is good and nothing to be refused if it be received with thanksgiving 5 For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer 6 If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine whereunto thou hast attained 7 But refuse profane and old wives fables and exercise thy self rather unto godliness 8 For bodily exercise profiteth ‖ Or for a little time little but godliness is profitable unto all things having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come 9 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation 10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach because we trust in the living God who is the Saviour of all men specially of those that beleeve 11 These things command and teach 12 Let no man despise thy youth but be thou an example of the beleevers in word in conversation in charity in spirit in faith in purity 13 Till I come give attendance to reading to exhortation to doctrine 14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee which was given thee by prophesie with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery 15 Meditate upon these things give thy self wholly to them that thy profiting may appear ‖ Or in all things to all 16 Take heed unto thy self and unto thy doctrine continue in them for in doing this thou shalt both save thy self and them that hear thee CHAP. V. 1 Rules to be observed in reproving 3 Of widows 17 Of elders 23 A precept for Timothies health 24 Some mens sins go before unto judgement and some mens do follow after REbuke not an elder but intreat him as a father and the younger men as brethren 2 The elder women as mothers the younger as sisters with all purity 3 Honour widows that are widows indeed 4 But if any widow have children or nephews let them learn first to shew ‖ Or kindness piety at home and to requite their parents for that is good and acceptable before God 5 Now she that is a widow indeed and desolate trusteth in God and continueth in supplications and prayers night and day 6 But she that liveth ‖ Or delicately in pleasure is dead while she liveth 7 And these things give in charge that they may be blameless 8 But if any provide not for his own and specially for those of his own ‖ Or kindred house he hath denied the faith and is worse then an infidel 9 Let not a widow be ‖ Or chosen taken into the number under threescore years old having been the wife of one man 10 Well reported of for good works if she have brought up children if she have lodged strangers if she have washed the saints feet if she have relieved the afflicted if she have diligently followed every good work 11 But the younger widows refuse for when they have begun to wax wanton against Christ they will marry 12 Having damnation because they have cast off their first faith 13 And withal they learn to be idle wandring about from house to house and not onely idle but tattlers also and busie-bodies speaking things which they ought not 14 I will therefore that the younger women marry bear children guide the house give none occasion to the adversary †Gr. for their railing to speak reproachfully 15 For some are already turned aside after Satan 16 If any man or woman that beleeveth have widows let them relieve them and let not the church be charged that it may relieve them that are widows indeed 17 * 1 Cor. 9 14. IV. 1 He warneth them not to beleeve all teachers who boast of the Spirit but to try them by the rules of the catholick faith 7 and by many reasons exhorteth to brotherly love BEloved beleeve not every spirit but try the spirits whether they are of God because many false prophets are gone out into the world 2 Hereby know ye the spirit of God Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God and this is that spirit of antichrist whereof you have heard that it should come and even now already is it in the world 4 Ye are of God little children and have overcome them because greater is he that is in you then he that is in the world 5 They are of the world therefore speak they of the world and the world heareth them 6 We are of God * Joh. 8 47. he that knoweth God heareth us he that is not of God heareth not us Hereby know we the Spirit of truth and the spirit of errour 7 Beloved let us love one another for love is of God and every one that loveth is born of God and knoweth God 8 He that loveth not knoweth not God for God is love 9 * Joh. 3.16 In this was manifested the love of God towards us because that God sent his onely begotten Son into the world that we might live through him 10 Herein is love not that we loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins 11 Beloved if God so loved us we ought also to love one another 12 * 1 Tim. 6.16 No man hath seen God at any time If we love one another God dwelleth in us and his love is perfected in us 13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him and he in us because he hath given us of his Spirit 14 And we have seen and do testifie that the Father sent the Son to be the Saviour of the world 15 Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God God dwelleth in him and he in God 16 And we have known and beleeved the love that God hath to us God is love and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God and God in him 17 Herein is †Gr. love with us our love made perfect that we may have boldness in the day of judgement because as he is so are we in this world 18 There is no fear in love but perfect love casteth out fear because fear hath torment he that feareth is not made perfect in love 19 We love him because he first loved us 20 If a man say I love God and hateth his brother he is a liar for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen how can he love God whom he hath not seen 21 And * Joh. 13.34 15.12 this commandment have we from him that he who loveth God love his brother also CHAP. V. He that loveth God loveth his children and keepeth his commandments 3 which to the faithful are light and not grievous 9 Jesus is the Son of God able to save us 14 and to bear our prayers which we make for our selves and for others WHosoever beleeveth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him 2 By this we know that we love the children of God when we love God and keep his commandments 3 For this is the love of God that we keep his commandments and * Mat. 11.30 his commandments are not grievous 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world and this is the victory that overcometh the world even our faith 5 Who is he that overcometh the world but he that beleeveth that Jesus is the Son of God 6 This is he that came by water and bloud even Jesus Christ not by water onely but by water and bloud and it is the Spirit that beareth witness because the Spirit is truth 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven the Father the Word and the holy Ghost and these three are one 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth the spirit and the water and the bloud and these three agree in one 9 If we receive the witness of men the witness of God is greater for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son 10 He that beleeveth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself he that beleeveth

IX 1 The man that was born blinde restored to sight 8 He is brought to the Pharisees 13 They are offended at it and excommunicate him 35 but he is received of Jesus and confesseth him 39 Who they are whom Christ enlightneth ANd as Jesus passed by he saw a man which was blinde from his birth 2 And his disciples asked him saying Master who did sin this man or his parents that he was born blinde 3 Jesus answered Neither hath this man sinned nor his parents but that the works of God should be made manifest in him 4 I must work the works of him that sent me while it is day the night cometh when no man can work 5 As long as I am in the world * Chap. 1.9 I am the light of the world 6 When he had thus spoken he spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle and he ‖ Or spread the clay upon the eyes of the blinde man anointed the eyes of the blinde man with the clay 7 And said unto him Go wash in the pool of Siloam which is by interpretation Sent. it be known what is spoken for ye shall speak into the air 10 There are it may be so many kinds of voices in the world and none of them is without signification 11 Therefore if I know not the meaning of the voice I shall be unto him that speaketh a barbarian and he that speaketh shall be a barbarian unto me 12 Even so ye forasmuch as ye are zealous †Gr. of spirits of spiritual gifts seek that ye may excel to the edifying of the church 13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret 14 For if I pray in an unknown tongue my spirit prayeth but my understanding is unfruitful 15 What is it then I will pray with the spirit and I will pray with the understanding also I will sing with the spirit and I will sing with the understanding also 16 Else when thou shalt bless with the spirit how shall he that occupieth the room of the unlearned say Amen at thy giving of thanks seeing he understandeth not what thou sayest 17 For thou verily givest thanks well but the other is not edified 18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more then you all 19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding that by my voice I might teach others also then ten thousand words in an unknown tongue 20 Brethren be not children in understanding howbeit in malice * Matth. 18.3 be ye children but in understanding be †Gr. perfect or of a ripe age men 21 In the law it is * Isa 28.11 written With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people and yet for all that will they not hear me saith the Lord. 22 Wherefore tongues are for a signe not to them that beleeve but to them that beleeve not but prophesying serveth not for them that beleeve not but for them which beleeve 23 If therefore the whole church be come together into one place and all speak with tongues there come in those that are unlearned or unbeleevers will they not say that ye are mad 24 But if all prophesie and there come in one that beleeveth not or one unlearned he is convinced of all he is judged of all 25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest and so falling down on his face he will worship God and report that God is in you of a truth 26 How is it then brethren when ye come together every one of you hath a psalm hath a doctrine hath a tongue hath a revelation hath an interpretation Let all things be done to edifying 27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue let it be by two or at the most by three and that by course and let one interpret 28 But if there be no interpreter let him keep silence in the church and let him speak to himself and to God 29 Let the prophets speak two or three and let the other judge 30 If any thing be revealed to another that fitteth by let the first hold his peace 31 For ye may all prophesie one by one that all may learn and all may be comforted 32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets 33 For God is not the authour of †Gr. tumult or unquietness confusion but of peace as in all churches of the saints 34 * 1 Tim. 2.12 Let your women keep silence in the churches for it is not permitted unto them to speak but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the * Gen. 3.16 law 35 And if they will learn any thing let them ask their husbands at home for it is a shame for women to speak in the church 36 What came the word of God out from you or came it unto you onely 37 If any man think himself to be a prophet or spiritual let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord. 38 But if any man be ignorant let him be ignorant 39 Wherefore brethren covet to prophesie and forbid not to speak with tongues 40 Let all things be done decently and in order CHAP. XV. 3 By Christs resurrection 12 he proveth the necessity of our resurrection against all such as deny the resurrection of the body 21 The fruit 35 and manner thereof 51 and of the changing of them that shall be found alive at the last day MOreover brethren I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you which also you have received and wherein ye stand 2 By which also ye are saved if ye ‖ Or bold fast keep in memory †Gr. by what speech what I preached unto you unless ye have beleeved in vain 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received how that Christ died for our sins * Isa 53.5 6 c. according to the scriptures 4 And that he was buried and that he rose again the third day * Psal 16.10 according to the scriptures 5 * John 20.19 And that he was seen of Cephas then of the twelve 6 After that he was seen of above five hundred brethren at once of whom the greater part remain unto this present but some are faln asleep 7 After that he was seen of James then of all the apostles 8 * Acts 9.4 Chap. 9.1 And last of all he was seen of me also as of ‖ Or an â—â—ortive one born out of due time 9 For I am the least of the apostles that am not meet to be called an apostle because I persecuted the church of God 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am and his grace which was bestowed upon me was not in vain but I laboured more abundantly then they all yet not I but the grace of God which was with me 11 Therefore whether it were I or they so we preach and so ye beleeved 12 Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead 13 But if there be no resurrection of the dead then is Christ not risen 14 And if Christ be not risen then is our preaching vain and your faith is also vain 15 Yea and we are found false witnesses of God because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ whom he raised not up if so he that the dead rise not 16 For if the dead rise not then is not Christ raised 17 And if Christ be not raised your faith is vain ye are yet in your sins 18 Then they also which are faln asleep in Christ are perished 19 If in this life onely we have hope in Christ we are of all men most miserable 20 But now is Christ risen from the dead and become * Col. 1.28 Rev. 1.5 the first-fruits of them that slept 21 For since by man came death by man came also the
justified 17 But if while we seek to be justified by Christ we our selves also are found sinners is therefore Christ the minister of sin God forbid 18 For if I build again the things which I destroyed I make my self a transgressour 19 For I through the law am dead to the law that I might live unto God 20 I am crucified with Christ Nevertheless I live yet not I but Christ liveth in me and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me 21 I do not frustrate the grace of God for if righteousness come by the law then Christ is dead in vain CHAP. III. 1 He asketh what moved them to leave the faith and hang upon the law 6 They that believe are justified 9 and blessed with Abraham 10 And this he sheweth by many reasons O Foolish Galatians who hath bewitched you that you should not obey the truth before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth crucified among you 2 This onely would I learn of you Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith 3 Are ye so foolish having begun in the Spirit are ye now made perfect by the flesh 4 Have ye suffered ‖ Or so great so many things in vain if it be yet in vain 5 He therefore that ministreth to you the Spirit and worketh miracles among you doeth he it by the works of the law or by the hearing of faith 6 Even as * Gen. 15.6 Abraham beleeved God and it was ‖ Or imputed accounted to him for righteousness 7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith the same are the children of Abraham 8 And the scripture foreseeing that God would justifie the heathen through faith preached before the gospel unto Abraham saying * Gen. 12.3 In thee shall all nations be blessed 9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham 10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse for it is written * Deu. 27.26 Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them 11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God it is evident for * Hab. 2.4 Rom. 1.17 Heb. 10. 38. The just shall live by faith 12 And the law is not of faith but * Lev. 18.5 the man that doeth them shall live in them 13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law being made a curse for us for it is written * Deu. 21.23 Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree 14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith 15 Brethren I speak after the manner of men Though it be but a mans ‖ Or testament covenant yet if it be confirmed no man disanulleth or addeth thereto 16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made He saith not And to seeds as of many but as of one And to thy seed which is Christ 17 And this I say that the covenant that was confirmed before of God in Christ the law which was four hundred and thirty years after cannot disanul that it should make the promise of none effect 18 For if the inheritance be of the law it is no more of promise but God gave it to Abraham by promise 19 Wherefore then serveth the law It was added because of transgressions till the seed should come to whom the promise was made and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediatour 20 Now a mediatour is not a mediatour of one but God is one 21 Is the law then against the promises of God God forbid for if there had been a law given which could have given life verily righteousness should have been by the law 22 But the scripture hath concluded * Rom. 3.9 all under sin that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that beleeve 23 But before faith came we were kept under the law shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed 24 Wherefore the law was our school-master to bring us unto Christ that we might be justified by faith 25 But after that faith is come we are no longer under a school-master 26 For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus 27 For * Rom. 6. ◠as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek there is neither bond nor free there is neither male nor female for ye are all one in Christ Jesus 29 And if ye be Christs then are ye Abrahams seed and heirs according to the promise CHAP. IV. 1 We were under the law till Christ came as the heir is under his guardian till he be of are 5 But Christ freed us from the law 7 therefore we are servants no longer to it 14 He remembreth their good will to him and his to them 22 and sheweth that we are the sons of Abraham by the free-woman NOw I say that the heir as long as he is a childe differeth nothing from a servant though he be lord of all 2 But is under tutours and governours until the time appointed of the father 3 Even so we when we were children were in bondage under the ‖ Or rudiments elements of the world 4 But when the fulness of the time was come God sent forth his Son made of a woman made under the law 5 To redeem them that were under the law that we might receive the adoption of sons 6 And because ye are sons God hath sent forth * Rom. 8.15 the Spirit of his Son into your hearts crying Abba Father 7 Wherefore thou art no more a servant but a son and if a son then an heir of God through Christ 8 Howbeit then when ye knew not God ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods 9 But now after that ye have known God or rather are known of God how turn ye ‖ Or back again to the weak and beggerly ‖ Or rudiments elements whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage 10 Ye observe days and moneths and times and years 11 I am afraid of you lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain 12 Brethren I beseech you be as I am for I am as ye are ye have not injured me at all 13 Ye know how through infirmity of the flesh I preached the gospel unto you at the first 14 And my temptation which was in my flesh ye despised not nor rejected but received me as an angel of God even as Christ Jesus 15 ‖ Or What was thou Where is then the blessedness you spake of for I bear you record that if it had been

I. 1 Timothy is put in minde of the charge which was given unto him by Paul at his going to Macedonia 5 Of the right use and end of the law 11 Of S. Pauls calling to be an apostle 20 and of Hymeneus and Alexander PAul an apostle of Jesus Christ by the commandment of God our Saviour and Lord Jesus Christ which is our hope 2 Unto Timothy my own son in the faith Grace mercy and peace from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. 3 As I besought thee to abide still at Ephesus when I went into Macedonia that thou mightest charge some that they teach no other doctrine 4 * Chap. 4.7 and 6.4 2 Tim. 2.23 Tit. 1.14 and 3.9 Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies which minister questions rather then godly edifying which is in faith so do 5 Now the end of the commandment is charity out of a pure heart and of a good conscience and of faith unfeigned 6 From which some ‖ Or not ayming it having swerved have turned aside unto vain jangling 7 Desiring to be teachers of the law understanding neither what they say nor whereof they affirm 8 But we know that the law is good if a man use it lawfully 9 Knowing this that the law is not made for a righteous man but for the lawless and disobedient for the ungodly and for sinners for unholy and profane for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers for manslayers 10 For whoremongers for them that defile themselves with mankind for men-stealers for liars for perjured persons and if there be any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine 11 According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God which was committed to my trust 12 And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord who hath enabled me for that he counted me faithful putting me into the ministery 13 Who was before a blasphemer and a persecutor and injurious But I obtained mercy because I did it ignorantly in unbelief 14 And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus 15 This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation that * Matth. 9.13 Mark 2.17 Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners of whom I am chief 16 Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all long-suffering for a pattern to them which should hereafter beleeve on him to life everlasting 17 Now unto the King eternal immortal invisible the onely wise God be honour and glory for ever and ever Amen 18 This charge I commit unto thee son Timothy according to the prophesies which went before on thee that thou by them mightest war a good warfare 19 Holding faith and a good conscience which some having put away concerning faith have made shipwrack 20 Of whom is Hymeneus and Alexander whom I have * 1 Cor. 5.5 delivered unto Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme CHAP. II. 1 That it is meet to pray and give thanks for all men and the reason why 9 How women should be attired 12 They are not permitted to teach 15 They shall be saved notwithstanding the testimonies of Gods wrath in child-birth if they continue in faith I ‖ Or desire Exhort therefore that first of all supplications prayers intercessions and giving of thanks be made for all men 2 For kings and for all that are in ‖ Or eminent place authority that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour 4 Who will have all men to be saved and to come unto the knowledge of the truth 5 For there is one God and one mediatour between God and men the man Christ Jesus 6 Who gave himself a ransom for all ‖ Or a testimony to be testified in due time 7 * 2 Tim. 1.11 Whereunto I am ordained a preacher and an apostle I speak the truth in Christ and lie not a teacher of the Gentiles in faith verity 8 I will therefore that men pray every where lifting up holy hands without wrath and doubting 9 In like manner also that * 1 Pet. 3.3 women adorn themselves in modest apparel with shamefacedness and sobriety not with ‖ Or plaited broidered hair or gold or pearls or costly aray 10 But which becometh women professing godliness with good works 11 Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection 12 But * 1 Cor 14 34. I suffer not a woman to teach nor to usurp authority over the man but to be in silence 13 For Adam was first formed then Eve 14 And Adam was not deceived but the woman being deceived was in the transgression 15 Notwithstanding she shall be saved in child-bearing if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety CHAP. III. 1 How bishops and deacons and their wives should be qualified 14 and to what end S. Paul wrote to Timothy of these things 15 Of the church and the blessed truth therein taught and professed THis is a true saying If a man desire the office of a bishop he desireth a good work 2 * Tit. 1 6◠c. A bishop then must
not seen ye love in whom though now ye see him not yet beleeving ye rejoyce with joy unspeakable and full of glory 9 Receiving the end of your faith even the salvation of your souls 10 Of which salvation the prophets have enquired and searched diligently who prophesied of the grace that should come unto you 11 Searching what or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signifie when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ and the glory that should follow 12 Unto whom it was revealed that not unto themselves but unto us they did minister the things which are now reported unto you by them that have preached the gospel unto you with the holy Ghost sent down from heaven which things the angels desire to look into 13 Wherefore gird up the loyns of your minde be sober and hope †Gr. perfectly to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ 14 As obedient children not fashioning your selves according to the former lusts in your ignorance 15 But as he which hath called you is holy so be ye holy in all manner of conversation 16 Because it is written * Lev. 11.44 19.2 20.7 Be ye holy for I am holy 17 And if ye call on the Father * Deu. 10.17 Rom. 2.11 who without respect of persons judgeth according to every mans work pass the time of your sojourning here in fear 18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things as silver and gold from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers 19 But with the precious bloud of Christ as of a Lamb without blemish and without spot 20 * Rom. 16.25 Col. 1.26 1 Tim. 1.10 Tit. 1.2 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world but was manifest in these last times for you 21 Who by him do beleeve in God that raised him up from the dead and gave him glory that your faith and hope might be in God 22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned * Rom. 12.10 Ch. 2.17 love of the brethren see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently 23 Being born again not of corruptible seed but of incorruptible by the word of God which liveth and abideth for ever 24 ‖ Or for that For * Isa 40.6 Jam. 2.10 all flesh is as grass and all the glory of man as the flower of grass The grass withereth and the flower thereof salleth away 25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you CHAP. II. He deborteth them from the breach of charity 4 shewing that Christ is the foundation whereupon they are built 11 He beseecheth them also to abstain from fleshly lusts 13 to be obedient to magistrates 18 and teacheth servants how to obey their masters 20 patiently suffering for well-doing after the example of Christ WHerefore laying aside all masice and all guile and hypocrifies and envies and all evil-speakings 2 As new born-babes desire the sincere milk of the word that ye may grow thereby 3 It so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious 4 To whom coming as unto a living stone disallowed indeed of men but chosen of God and precious 5 Ye also as lively stones ‖ Or be ye built are built up a spiritual house an holy priesthood to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God by Jesus Christ 6 Wherefore also it is contained in the scripture * If. 28.16 Rom. 9 3â— Behold I lay in Sion a chief corner-stone elect precious and he that beleeveth on him shall not be confounded 7 Unto you therefore which beleeve he is ‖ Or an honour precious but unto them which be disobedient * Ps 118.22 Mat. 21.42 Act. 4 11. the stone which the builders disallowed the same is made the head of the corner 8 * If. 8.14 Rom. 9.33 And a stone of stumbling a rock of offence even to them which stumble at the word being disobedient whereunto also they were appointed 9 But ye are a chosen generation * Ex. 19.6 Rev. 1.6 c 5.10 a royal priesthood an holy nation ‖ Or a purchased people a peculiar people that ye should shew forth the ‖ Or vertues praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light 10 * Hos 2.23 Rom. 9.25 Which in time past were not a people but are now the people of God which had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy 11 Dearly beloved I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims * Rom. 13.14 Gal. 5. â—6 abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul 12 * On. 2.16 Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles that ‖ Or wherein whereas they speak against you as evil-doers * Mat. 5.16 they may by your good works which they shall behold glorifie God in the day of vnitation 13 * Ro. 13.1 Submit your selves to every ordinance of man for the Lords sake whether it be to the king as supreme 14 Or unto governours as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evil-doers and for the praise of them that do well 15 For so is the will of God that with wel-doing ye may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men 16 As free and not †Gr. having using your liberty for a cloke of maliciousness but as the servants of God 17 ‖ Or esteem Honour all men Love the brother-hood Fear God Honour the king 18 * Eph. 6.5 Col. 3.22 Tit. 2.9 Servants be subject to your masters with all fear not onely to the good and gentle but also to the froward 19 For this is ‖ Or thank thank-worthy if a man for conscience toward God endure grief suffering wrongfully 20 For what glory is it if when ye be buffeted for your faults ye shall take it patiently but if when ye do well and suffer for it ye take it patiently this is ‖ Or think acceptable with God 21 For even hereunto were ye called because Christ also suffered ‖ Some read for you for us leaving us an example that ye should follow his steps 22 * Is 13.9 Who did no sin neither was guile found in his mouth 23 Who when he was reviled reviled not again when he suffered he threatned not but ‖ Or committed his cause committed himself to him that judgeth righteously 24 * Is 53.4 5 6. II. 1 He comforteth them against the sins of infirmity 3 Rightly to know God is to keep his commandments 9 to love our brethren 15 and not to love the world 18 We must beware of sâ—ducers 20 from whose deceits the godly are safe preserved by perseverance in faith and â—oliness of life MY little children these things write I unto you that ye sin not And if any man sin * Heb. 9. â—â— we have an advocate with the Father Jesus Christ the righteous 2 And he is the propitiation for our sins and not for ours onely but also for the sins of the whole world 3 And hereby we do know that we know him if we keep his commandments 4 He that saith I know him and keepeth not his commandments is a liar and the truth is not in him 5 But whoso keepeth his word in him verily is the love of God perfected hereby know we that we are in him 6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk even as he walked 7 Brethren * 2 Joh. â— I write no new commandment unto you but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning the old commandment is the word which ye have heard from the beginning 8 Again a new commandment I write unto you which thing is true in him and in you because the darkness is past and the true light now shineth 9 He that saith he is in the light and hateth his brother is in darkness even until now 10 * Ch. 3 1â— He that loveth his brother abideth in the light and there is none †Gr scandal occasion of stumbling in him 11 But he that hateth his brother is in darkness and walketh in darkness and knoweth not whither he goeth because that darkness hath blinded his eyes 12 I write unto you little children because your sins are forgiven you for his names sake 13 I write unto you fathers because ye have known him that is from the beginning I write unto you young men because you have overcome the wicked one I write unto you little children because ye have known the Father 14 I have written unto you fathers because ye have known him that is from the beginning I have written unto you young men because ye are strong and the word of God abideth in you and ye have over come the wicked one 15 Love not the world neither the things that are in the world If any man love the world the love of the Father is not in him 16 For all that is in the world the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life is not of the Father but is of the world 17 And the world passeth away and the lust thereof but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever 18 Little children it is the last time and as ye have heard that Antichrist shall come even now are there many Antichrists whereby we know that it is the last time 19 They went out from us but they were not of us for if they had been of us they would no doubt have continued with us but they went out that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us 20 But ye have an unction from the holy One and ye know all things 21 I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth but because ye know it and that no lie is of the truth 22 Who is a har but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ He is Antichrist that denieth the Father and the Son 23 Whosoever denieth the Son the same hath not the Father but he that acknowledgeth the Son hath the Father also 24 Let that therefore abide in you which ye have heard from the beginning If that which ye have heard from the beginning shall remain in you ye also shall continue in the Son and in the Father 25 And this is the promise that he hath promised us even eternal life 26 These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you 27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you and ye need not that any man teach you But as the same anointing teacheth you of all things and is truth and is no lie and even as it hath taught you ye shall abide in ‖ Or it him 28 And now little children abide in him that when he shall appear we may have confidence and not be ashamed before him at his coming 29 If ye know that he is righteous ‖ Or know ye ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him CHAP. III. 1 He declareth the singular love of God towards us in making us his sons 3 who therefore ought obediently to keep his commandments 11 as also brotherly to love one another BEhold what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us that we should be called the sons of God therefore the world knoweth us not because it knew him not 2 Beloved now are we the sons of God and it doth not yet appear what we shall be but we know that when he shall appear we shall be like him for we shall see him as he is 3 And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself even as he is pure 4 Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law for sin is the transgression of the law 5 And ye know that he was manifested * Isa 53.6 c. to take away our sins and in him is no sin 6 Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not whosoever sinneth hath not seen him neither known him 7 Little children let no man deceive you he that doeth righteousness is righteous even as he is righteous 8 * Joh. 8.44 He that committeth sin is of the devil for the

XXXVI 1 A prayer for the church against the enemies thereof 18 A good heart and a froward 21 Of a good wife HAve mercy upon us O Lord God of all and behold us 2 And send thy fear upon all the nations that seek not after thee 3 * Jer. 10.25 Lift up thy hand ‖ Or upon against the strange nations and let them see thy power 4 As thou wast sanctified in us before them so be thou magnified among them before us 5 And let them know thee as we have known thee that there is no God but onely thou O God 6 Shew new signs and make other strange wonders glorify thy hand and thy right arm that they may set forth thy wondrous works 7 Raise up indignation and pour out wrath take away the adversary and destroy the enemy 8 Make the time short remember the †Gr. oath covenant and let them declare thy wonderful works 9 Let him that escapeth be consumed by the rage of the fire and let them perish that oppress the people 10 Smite in sunder the heads of the rulers of the heathen that say There is none other but we 11 Gather all the tribes of Jacob together and inherit thou them as from the beginning 12 O Lord have mercy upon the people that is called by thy name and upon Israel * Exod. 4.22 whom thou hast named thy first-born 13 O be merciful unto Jerusalem thy holy city the place of thy rest 14 Fill Sion ‖ Or. that it may magnify thine oracles with thine unspeakable oracles and thy people with thy glory 15 Give testimony unto those that thou hast possessed from the beginning and raise up ‖ Or. prophesies prophets that have been in thy name 16 Reward them that wait for thee and let thy prophets be found faithful 17 O Lord hear the prayer of thy ‖ Or supplients servants according to the * Num. 6.23 blessing of Aaron over thy people that all they which dwell upon the earth may know that thou art the Lord the eternal God 18 The belly devoureth all meats yet is one meat better then another 19 * Job 34.3 As the palate tasteth divers kinds of venison so doth an heart of understanding false speeches 20 A froward heart causeth heaviness but a man of experience will recompense him 21 A woman will receive every man yet is one daughter better then another 22 The beauty of a woman cheereth the countenance and a man loveth nothing better 23 If there be kindness meekness and comfort in her tongue then is not her husband like ‖ Or common other men 24 He that getteth a wife beginneth ‖ Or to thrive a possession a help like unto himself and a pillar of rest 25 Where no hedge is there the possession is spoiled and he that hath no wife will wander up and down mourning 26 Who will trust a thief well-appointed that skippeth from city to city so who will beleeve a man that hath no house and lodgeth wheresoever the night taketh him CHAP. XXXVII 1 How to know friends and counsellours 12 The discretion and wisdom of a godly man blesseth him 27 Learn to refrain thine appetite EVery friend saith I am his friend also but there is a friend which is onely a friend in name 2 Is it not a grief unto death when a companion and friend is turned to an enemy 3 O wicked imagination whence camest thou in to cover the earth with deceit 4 There is a companion which rejoyceth in the prosperity of a friend but in the time of trouble will be against him 5 There is a companion which helpeth his friend for the belly and taketh up the buckler ‖ Or in presence of the enemy against the enemy 6 Forget not thy friend in thy minde and be not unmindful of him in thy riches 7 Every councellour extolleth counsel but there is some that councelleth for himself 8 Beware of a counsellour and know before ‖ Or what use there is of him what need he hath for he will counsel for himself lest he cast the lot upon thee 9 And say unto thee Thy way is good and afterward he stand on the other side to see what shall be fall thee 10 Consult not with one that suspecteth thee and hide thy counsel from such as envy thee 11 Neither consult with a woman touching her of whom she is jealous neither with a coward in matters of war nor with a merchant concerning exchange nor with a buyer of selling nor with an envious man of thankfulness nor with an unmerciful man touching kindness nor with the slothful for any work nor with an hireling for a year of finishing work nor with an idle servant of much business hearken not unto these in any mattter of counsel 12 But be continually with a godly man whom thou knowest to keep the commandments of the Lord whose minde is according to thy minde and will sorrow with thee if thou shalt miscarry 13 And let the counsel of thine own heart stand for there is no man more faithful unto thee then it 14 For a mans minde is sometime wont to tell him more then seven watchmen that sit above in an high tower 15 And above all this pray to the most High that he will direct thy way in truth 16 Let reason go before every enterprise and counsel before every action 17 The countenance is a signe of changing of the heart 18
Four manner of things appear good and evil life and death but the tongue ruleth over them continually 19 There is one that is wise and teacheth many and yet is unprofitable to himself 20 There is one that sheweth wisdom in words and is hated he shall be destitute of all ‖ Or wisdom food 21 For grace is not given him from the Lord because he is deprived of all wisdom 22 Another is wise to himself and the fruits of understanding are commendable in his mouth 23 A wise man instructeth his people and the fruits of his understanding fail not 24 A wise man shall be filled with blessing and all they that see him shall count him happy 25 The days of the life of man may be numbred but the days of Israel are innumerable 26 A wise man shall inherit ‖ Or are 〈…〉 glory among his people and his name shall be perpetual 27 My son prove thy soul in thy life and see what is evil for it and give not that unto it 28 For all things are not profitable for all men neither hath every soul pleasure in every thing 29 Be not unsatiable in any dainty thing nor too greedy upon meats 30 For ‖ Or variety of meats excess of meats bringeth sickness and surfeting will turn into choler 31 By surfeting have many perished but he that taketh heed prolongeth his life CHAP. XXXVIII 1 Honour due to the physician and why 16 How to weep and mourn for the deal 24 The wisdom of the learned man and of the labourer and artificer with the use of them both HOnour a physician with the honour due unto him for the uses which you may have of him for the Lord hath created him 2 For of the most High cometh healing and he shall receive ‖ Or a giâ—t honour of the king 3 The skill of the physician shall lift up his head and in the sight of great men he shall be in admiration 4 The Lord hath created medicines out of the earth and he that is wise will not abhor them 5 * Exod. â—5 25 Was not the water made sweet with wood that the vertue thereof might be known 6 And he hath given men skill that he might be honoured in his marvellous works 7 With such doth he heal men and taketh away their pains 8 Of such doth the apothecary make a confection and of his works there is no end and from him is peace over all the earth 9 My son in thy sickness be not negligent but * Isa 38.2 pray unto the Lord and he will make thee whole 10 Leave off from sin and order thy hands aright and cleanse thy heart from all wickedness 11 Give a sweet savour and a memorial of fine flour and make a fat offering ‖ Or as a deed man as not being 12 Then give place to the physician for the Lord hath created him let him not go from thee for thou hast need of him 13 There is a time when in their hands there is good success 14 For they shall also pray unto the Lord that he would prosper that which they give for ease and ‖ Or â—â—ring remedy to prolong life 15 He that sinneth before his maker let him fall into the hand of the physician 16 My son let tears fall down over the dead and begin to lament as it thou hadst suffered great harm thy self and then cover his body according to the custom and neglect not his burial 17 Weep bitterly and make great moan and use lamentation as he is worthy and that a day or two lest thou be evil-spoken of and then comfort thy self for thy heaviness 18 Foâ— of heaviness cometh death and the heaviness of the * Pro. 15.13 17.22 heart breaketh strength 19 In affliction also sorrow remaineth and the life of the poor is the curse of the heart 20 Take no heaviness to heart drive it away and remember the last end 21 Forget it not for there is no turning again thou shalt not do him good but hurt thy self 22 Remember ‖ Or the sentence upon him my judgement for thine also shall be so yesterday for me and to day for thee 23 * 2 Sam. 33.20 When the dead is at rest let his remembrance rest and be comforted for him when his spirit is departed from him 24 The wisdom of a learned man cometh by opportunity of leisure and he that hath little business shall become wise 25 How can he get wisdom that holdeth the plough and that glorieth in the goad that driveth oxen and is occupied in their labours and whose talk is †Gr. of the breed of bullocks of bullocks 26 He giveth his minde to make furrows and is diligent to give the kine â—odder 27 So every carpenter and work-master that laboureth night and day and they that cut and grave seals and are diligent to make great variety and give themselves to counterfeit imagery and watch to finish a work 28 The smith also sitting by the anvil and considering the iron work the vapour of the fire wasteth his flesh and he fighteth with the heat of the furnace the noise of the hammer and the anvil is ever in his ears and his eyes look still upon the pattern of the thing that he maketh he setteth his minde to finish his work and watcheth to polish it perfectly 29 So doth the potter sitting at his work and turning the wheel about with his feet who is alway carefully set at his work and maketh all his work by number 30 He fashioneth the clay with his arm and ‖ Or tempereth it with his feet boweth down his strength before his feet he applieth himself to lead it over and he is diligent to make clean the furnace 31 All these trust to their hands and every one is wise in his work 32 Without these cannot a city be inhabited and they shall not dwell where they will nor go up and down 33 They shall not be sought for in publick counsel nor sit high in the congregation they shall not sit on the judges seat nor understand the sentence of judgement they cannot declare justice and judgement and they shall not be found where parables are spoken 34 But they will maintain the state of the world and all their desire is in the work of their craft CHAP. XXXIX 1 A description of him that is truth wise 12 An exhortation to praise God for his works which are good to the good and evil to them that are evil BUt he that giveth his minde to the law of the most High and is occupied in the meditation thereof will seek out the wisdom of all the ancient and be occupied in prophecies 2 He will keep the sayings of the renowned men and where subtil parables are he will be there also 3 He will seek out the secrets of grave sentences and be conversant in dark parables 4 He shall serve among great men and appear before
