spirit_n raise_v and_o keep_v it_o up_o to_o a_o pitch_n suitable_a to_o his_o condition_n though_o he_o have_v not_o every_o day_n or_o hour_n distinct_a form_v thought_n of_o they_o nor_o be_v often_o in_o that_o contemplative_a transport_v with_o nabuchadnezzar_n be_v not_o this_o great_a babylon_n which_o i_o have_v build_v etc._n etc._n both_o these_o be_v holy_a delight_n or_o delight_n the_o heart_n towards_o god_n as_o the_o object_n and_o end_n which_o it_o ultimate_o tend_v to_o and_o terminate_v upon_o though_o in_o the_o former_a way_n of_o delight_v in_o god_n the_o soul_n tend_v towards_o he_o more_o direct_o in_o the_o latter_a according_a as_o the_o act_n may_v be_v to_o which_o the_o delight_n adhere_v more_o oblique_o and_o through_o several_a thing_n that_o may_v be_v intermediate_v unto_o that_o final_a and_o ultimate_a object_n and_o both_o these_o may_v fit_o be_v understand_v to_o be_v within_o the_o meaning_n of_o this_o text_n which_o therefore_o we_o more_o quick_a confirm_v and_o strong_a in_o more_o grow_v christian_n yet_o these_o sensation_n be_v more_o single_a and_o unaccompany_v though_o not_o altogether_o with_o the_o exercise_n of_o spiritual_a reason_n and_o judgement_n and_o do_v less_o come_v in_o that_o way_n with_o christian_n in_o their_o minority_n than_o with_o other_o or_o themselves_o afterward_o therefore_o that_o which_o we_o be_v to_o understand_v ourselves_o call_v to_o under_o the_o name_n of_o delight_v in_o god_n thus_o take_v be_v the_o keep_n of_o our_o soul_n open_a to_o divine_a influence_n and_o communication_n thirst_v after_o they_o pray_v and_o wait_v for_o they_o endeavour_v to_o improve_v they_o and_o cooperate_v with_o they_o and_o to_o stir_v up_o ourselves_o unto_o such_o exercise_n of_o religion_n as_o they_o lead_v to_o and_o be_v most_o suitable_a to_o our_o present_a state_n together_o with_o a_o allow_v yea_o and_o apply_v ourselves_o to_o stay_v and_o taste_v in_o our_o progress_n and_o course_n the_o sweetness_n and_o delightfulness_n of_o those_o communication_n and_o operation_n whereof_o we_o have_v any_o present_a experience_n for_o instance_n when_o we_o find_v god_n at_o work_n with_o we_o and_o gracious_o deal_v with_o our_o spirit_n to_o humble_v they_o break_v and_o melt_v they_o under_o a_o sense_n of_o sin_n incline_v and_o turn_v they_o towards_o himself_o draw_v they_o to_o a_o closure_n with_o his_o son_n the_o redeemer_n to_o a_o resignation_n and_o surrender_n of_o ourselves_o to_o he_o upon_o the_o term_n of_o his_o covenant_n and_o law_n of_o grace_n yea_o and_o when_o afterward_o we_o find_v he_o frame_v our_o heart_n to_o a_o course_n of_o holy_a walk_n and_o conversation_n to_o the_o denial_n of_o ungodliness_n and_o worldly_a lust_n to_o a_o sober_a righteous_a and_o godly_a life_n in_o this_o present_a world_n to_o the_o exercise_n of_o piety_n sobriety_n righteousness_n charity_n mercy_n etc._n etc._n and_o now_o this_o or_o the_o like_a heavenly_a dictate_v occur_v to_o we_o delight_n thyself_o in_o the_o lord_n what_o do_v it_o import_v what_o must_v we_o understand_v it_o to_o say_v or_o signify_v to_o we_o it_o do_v signify_v and_o say_v to_o we_o thy_o only_a true_a delight_n be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o a_o course_n of_o religion_n they_o be_v not_o to_o be_v expect_v from_o this_o world_n or_o thy_o former_a sinful_a course_n but_o in_o exercise_v thyself_o unto_o godliness_n in_o receive_v and_o comply_v with_o the_o divine_a discovery_n recommend_v to_o thou_o in_o the_o gospel_n and_o thereon_o the_o bless_a god_n have_v settle_v this_o connexion_n between_o our_o faith_n and_o his_o own_o exerted_a power_n as_o the_o extraordinary_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v not_o do_v but_o upon_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o extraordinary_a faith_n which_o by_o the_o divine_a constitution_n be_v requisite_a thereunto_o so_o that_o the_o infidelity_n which_o stand_v in_o the_o privation_n to_o speak_v it_o as_o the_o undisguised_a sense_n of_o our_o heart_n because_o thy_o law_n be_v holy_a therefore_o thy_o servant_n love_v it_o to_o reckon_v it_o a_o royal_a law_n of_o liberty_n so_o as_o to_o account_v ourselves_o so_o much_o the_o more_o free_a by_o how_o much_o we_o be_v the_o more_o thus_o bind_v when_o we_o affect_v to_o be_v prescribe_v to_o and_o be_v become_v patient_a of_o government_n not_o apt_a to_o chafe_v at_o the_o bridle_n or_o spurn_v and_o kick_v at_o the_o boundary_n that_o hem_v we_o in_o this_o be_v a_o temper_n that_o have_v not_o more_o of_o duty_n in_o it_o than_o it_o have_v of_o delight_n there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o delight_v in_o the_o law_n of_o god_n according_a to_o the_o inward_a man_n when_o there_o be_v yet_o a_o difficulty_n in_o suppress_v and_o keep_v under_o inordinate_a rebellious_a work_n of_o corrupt_a nature_n unto_o which_o there_o be_v no_o desire_n a_o indulgence_n shall_v be_v give_v by_o have_v the_o law_n attemper_v to_o they_o but_o severity_n rather_o use_v to_o reduce_v they_o to_o a_o conformity_n to_o the_o law_n so_o will_v it_o be_v if_o the_o law_n become_v a_o heart_n impression_n when_o it_o can_v once_o be_v true_o say_v thy_o law_n be_v in_o my_o heart_n it_o will_v be_v also_o with_o the_o same_o sincerity_n say_v 40._o i_o delight_v to_o do_v thy_o will_n o_o god_n the_o continual_a exercise_n of_o good_a conscience_n towards_o god_n have_v great_a pleasure_n in_o it_o hereby_o our_o way_n and_o course_n be_v continual_o review_v and_o we_o pass_v censure_n upon_o ourselves_o and_o upon_o that_o account_n survey_v our_o own_o work_n and_o by_o how_o much_o the_o more_o careful_o and_o often_o this_o be_v do_v so_o much_o the_o more_o delectable_a it_o will_v be_v that_o be_v the_o more_o approvable_a we_o shall_v find_v they_o upon_o review_n for_o we_o shall_v order_v our_o course_n the_o more_o wary_o as_o we_o reckon_v upon_o undergo_a a_o inquisition_n and_o search_n wherein_o a_o apprehensive_a serious_a heart_n well_o understand_v it_o be_v not_o itself_o to_o be_v the_o supreme_a judg._n how_o bless_v a_o imitation_n may_v there_o here_o be_v of_o the_o bless_a god_n himself_o who_o we_o find_v behold_v his_o six_o day_n work_n and_o lo_o they_o be_v all_o very_a good_a whereupon_o follow_v his_o delightful_a day_n of_o rest_n so_o we_o shall_v in_o some_o degree_n of_o conformity_n to_o he_o find_v our_o work_n to_o be_v in_o that_o sort_n good_a as_o that_o he_o will_v by_o gracious_a indulgence_n accept_v they_o as_o such_o have_v our_o own_o sabbath_n a_o sweet_a and_o peaceful_a rest_n in_o our_o own_o spirit_n though_o we_o can_v pretend_v no_o high_o than_o sincerity_n only_o yet_o how_o sweet_a be_v the_o reflection_n of_o a_o well-instructed_n conscience_n upon_o that_o when_o our_o heart_n reproach_v we_o not_o and_o we_o resolve_v they_o shall_v not_o as_o long_o as_o we_o live_v we_o be_v conscious_a to_o ourselves_o of_o no_o base_a design_n we_o propose_v nothing_o to_o ourselves_o wherein_o we_o apprehend_v cause_n to_o decline_v god_n eye_n we_o walk_v in_o the_o light_n and_o be_v seek_v no_o darkness_n or_o shadow_n of_o death_n where_o as_o worker_n of_o iniquity_n we_o may_v hide_v ourselves_o from_o he_o can_v implore_v he_o as_o a_o assistant_n and_o appeal_v to_o he_o as_o a_o judge_n in_o reference_n to_o our_o daily_a affair_n and_o wont_a course_n be_v this_o without_o pleasure_n this_o be_v our_o rejoice_n 12._o say_v the_o apostle_n the_o testimony_n of_o our_o conscience_n that_o in_o simplicity_n and_o godly_a sincerity_n not_o with_o fleshly_a wisdom_n but_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n we_o have_v have_v our_o conversation_n etc._n etc._n and_o thus_o to_o converse_v with_o god_n a_o he_o who_o we_o daily_a design_n to_o glorify_v and_o serve_v and_o who_o we_o expect_v daily_o in_o some_o measure_n and_o full_o and_o final_o ere_o it_o be_v long_o to_o enjoy_v be_v certain_o throughout_o a_o way_n of_o pleasantness_n and_o peace_n how_o delectable_a then_o be_v this_o soul-rectifying_a communication_n from_o god_n whereby_o be_v before_o so_o disaffect_v it_o become_v now_o so_o well_o incline_v towards_o he_o in_o all_o these_o respect_n but_o because_o the_o exigency_n of_o the_o case_n do_v require_v by_o reason_n of_o sin_n that_o have_v cut_v off_o the_o intercourse_n that_o there_o shall_v be_v a_o mediator_n to_o open_v the_o way_n and_o renew_v the_o former_a outwear_v friendship_n therefore_o it_o be_v also_o necessary_a that_o so_o the_o soul_n may_v due_o move_v towards_o god_n it_o shall_v be_v right_o frame_v and_o dispose_v also_o towards_o he_o we_o be_v therefore_o to_o consider_v too_o how_o delectable_a this_o communication_n must_v be_v as_o it_o aright_o dispose_v the_o heart_n towards_o christ_n our_o way_n to_o god_n for_o towards_o he_o we_o must_v understand_v it_o to_o have_v be_v most_o obstinate_o and_o inflexible_o averse_a and_o that_o therefore_o a_o mighty_a communication_n of_o power_n be_v necessary_a to_o set_v it_o right_n here_o unto_o that_o part_n of_o religion_n which_o be_v natural_a there_o be_v so_o much_o of_o a_o advantage_n beforehand_o as_o that_o there_o be_v a_o old_a foundation_n to_o build_v upon_o there_o be_v some_o notion_n of_o god_n leave_v not_o only_o here_o be_v somewhat_o in_o nature_n to_o be_v wrought_v upon_o as_o to_o this_o part_n of_o religion_n but_o as_o to_o that_o part_n which_o respect_v the_o mediator_n this_o be_v a_o frame_n whole_o to_o be_v raise_v up_o from_o the_o ground_n there_o be_v no_o principle_n immediate_o and_o direct_o incline_v to_o take_v part_n with_o the_o gospel_n but_o all_o to_o be_v implant_v anew_o the_o way_n that_o god_n will_v take_v to_o bring_v back_o soul_n to_o he_o be_v so_o infinite_o above_o all_o human_a thought_n and_o therefore_o though_o to_o a_o consider_v pagan_a it_o will_v not_o sound_v strange_o that_o god_n ought_v to_o be_v trust_v fear_a love_a etc._n etc._n yet_o even_o to_o such_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n be_v foolishness_n beside_o that_o this_o way_n of_o deal_n with_o man_n be_v not_o only_o unknown_a and_o unimaginable_a to_o they_o not_o so_o much_o as_o once_o think_v of_o or_o to_o be_v guest_n at_o but_o the_o tendency_n and_o aspect_n of_o it_o when_o it_o shall_v come_v to_o be_v make_v know_v be_v such_o as_o that_o it_o can_v not_o but_o find_v the_o temper_n of_o man_n spirit_n most_o strong_o opposite_a not_o mere_o ignorant_a but_o prejudice_v and_o high_o disaffect_v for_o this_o course_n most_o direct_o tend_v to_o take_v man_n quite_o off_o from_o their_o old_a bottom_n to_o stoop_v and_o humble_a and_o even_o bring_v they_o to_o nothing_o to_o stain_v the_o pride_n of_o their_o glory_n and_o lay_v they_o down_o in_o the_o dust_n as_o abject_a wretch_n in_o themselves_o fit_a for_o nothing_o but_o to_o be_v trample_v on_o and_o crush_v by_o the_o foot_n of_o divine_a revenge_n suppose_v a_o man_n to_o have_v admit_v a_o conviction_n from_o the_o light_n of_o his_o own_o mind_n and_o conscience_n that_o he_o be_v a_o sinner_n and_o have_v offend_v his_o maker_n incur_v his_o just_a displeasure_n and_o make_v himself_o liable_a to_o his_o punish_a justice_n it_o will_v yet_o have_v be_v a_o hard_a matter_n to_o make_v he_o believe_v it_o altogether_o impossible_a to_o he_o to_o do_v any_o thing_n to_o remedy_v the_o matter_n and_o restore_v himself_o to_o divine_a favour_n and_o acceptance_n he_o will_v natural_o be_v incline_v to_o think_v why_o admit_v the_o case_n be_v so_o he_o shall_v easy_o find_v out_o a_o way_n to_o make_v god_n amends_o he_o will_v recount_v with_o himself_o all_o his_o own_o natural_a excellency_n and_o think_v himself_o very_o capable_a of_o do_v some_o great_a thing_n that_o shall_v more_o than_o expiate_v his_o offence_n and_o make_v recompense_n abundant_o for_o
