indeed_o the_o foundation_n of_o all_o the_o other_o three_o abovementioned_a otherwise_o it_o may_v be_v think_v no_o materal_a thing_n nor_o worth_a the_o while_n to_o contend_v whether_o the_o seed_n and_o life_n of_o grace_n and_o holiness_n be_v a_o substance_n or_o accident_n it_o seem_v rather_o to_o be_v a_o question_n of_o philosophy_n and_o so_o not_o needful_a to_o be_v determine_v the_o one_o way_n or_o the_o other_o by_o they_o who_o meddle_v not_o in_o such_o matter_n but_o i_o say_v this_o make_v the_o thing_n the_o more_o needful_a to_o be_v open_v because_o the_o other_o three_o error_n and_o divers_a other_o be_v build_v on_o it_o for_o say_v they_o if_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n be_v a_o accident_n it_o can_v be_v in_o the_o soul_n but_o it_o must_v denominate_v it_o according_a to_o its_o own_o quality_n or_o property_n so_o that_o the_o soul_n must_v be_v holy_a righteous_a pure_a etc._n etc._n because_o the_o seed_n be_v such_o also_o it_o can_v be_v in_o the_o soul_n but_o it_o must_v be_v in_o union_n therewith_o because_o the_o essence_n or_o be_v of_o every_o accident_n consist_v in_o its_o be_v in_o union_n with_o its_o subject_n but_o say_v they_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n be_v a_o accident_n therefore_o etc._n etc._n now_o the_o first_o proposition_n of_o this_o argument_n be_v certain_a and_o can_v be_v deny_v but_o the_o second_o be_v false_a produce_v a_o few_o plain_a argument_n obvious_a to_o any_o clear_a and_o sound_a understanding_n as_o 1._o even_o as_o we_o do_v infer_v from_o the_o variety_n and_o nobility_n of_o the_o operation_n of_o the_o rational_a life_n and_o soul_n that_o it_o be_v a_o substance_n and_o no_o accident_n so_o both_o from_o the_o great_a variety_n and_o also_o the_o great_a nobility_n much_o great_a than_o that_o of_o the_o rational_a soul_n or_o life_n of_o its_o operation_n we_o conclude_v that_o it_o to_o wit_n the_o seed_n of_o god_n be_v a_o substance_n 2._o it_o be_v the_o root_n and_o spâ—ing_n of_o the_o spiritual_a sense_n whereby_o we_o see_v hear_v taste_n savour_n and_o feel_v spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a object_n therefore_o it_o be_v a_o substance_n 3._o and_o see_v it_o be_v common_o grant_v that_o the_o life_n of_o vegetation_n the_o life_n of_o sensation_n the_o life_n of_o reason_n be_v all_o substance_n shall_v we_o deny_v that_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n or_o holiness_n it_o be_v a_o accident_n it_o can_v not_o come_v from_o heaven_n because_o the_o maxim_n be_v a_o accident_n can_v pass_v from_o one_o subject_n into_o another_o 6._o it_o be_v call_v oft_o in_o of_o this_o outward_a world_n 8._o it_o receive_v the_o name_n of_o all_o these_o thing_n which_o be_v substance_n but_o never_o the_o name_n of_o a_o accident_n in_o scripture_n therefore_o etc._n the_o vine-tree_n who_o fruit_n have_v both_o body_n and_o spirit_n as_o wine_n have_v its_o spirit_n and_o so_o any_o other_o liquor_n which_o evaporate_v or_o extract_v leave_v its_o body_n dead_a so_o this_o spiritual_a seed_n and_o vine_n have_v its_o body_n and_o spirit_n contain_v in_o it_o manifold_a most_o noble_a and_o excellent_a power_n and_o virtue_n which_o spirit_n be_v a_o suffering_n or_o trial_n to_o come_v upon_o we_o for_o the_o future_a do_v affect_v we_o with_o no_o less_o weight_n many_o time_n in_o the_o foresight_n of_o they_o then_o in_o their_o accomplishment_n yea_o sometime_o more_o as_o every_o one_o know_v by_o some_o experience_n and_o that_o he_o be_v give_v up_o and_o resign_v in_o the_o very_a beginning_n to_o come_v into_o the_o say_v that_o all_o the_o benefit_n and_o blessing_n which_o come_v upon_o man_n or_o have_v come_v upon_o they_o from_o the_o very_a beginning_n for_o either_o their_o justification_n or_o power_n light_n and_o life_n of_o god_n and_o his_o divine_a goodness_n love_n mercy_n kindness_n and_o compassion_n reveal_v to_o we_o in_o christ_n jesus_n and_o this_o kind_n of_o divine_a thought_n if_o so_o be_v it_o be_v proper_a to_o call_v they_o thought_n for_o they_o be_v as_o real_a sentation_n as_o the_o outward_a and_o natural_a sentation_n be_v be_v the_o more_o excellent_a dwell_v and_o tabernacle_v therein_o and_o there_o through_o conveigh_v the_o manifestation_n of_o it_o unto_o the_o soul_n fourteen_o now_o a_o man_n regeneration_n be_v not_o simple_o the_o have_v this_o divine_a image_n raise_v and_o form_v in_o he_o but_o it_o be_v somewhat_o consequential_a thereunto_o for_o it_o be_v by_o this_o image_n through_o the_o mighty_a operation_n of_o god_n own_o essence_n so_o that_o it_o be_v the_o same_o cloth_n still_o only_o have_v another_o die_n and_o colour_n from_o the_o tincture_n which_o it_o have_v drink_v in_o and_o substantial_o get_v it_o incorporate_v in_o itself_o xv._n but_o before_o this_o divine_a image_n can_v be_v form_v in_o the_o soul_n or_o that_o the_o soul_n can_v be_v tincture_v or_o leaven_v therewith_o the_o soul_n must_v be_v cleanse_v and_o purify_v from_o the_o pollution_n and_o defilement_n it_o have_v receive_v from_o the_o contrary_a image_n which_o be_v that_o of_o the_o serpent_n even_o as_o according_a to_o the_o former_a example_n before_o the_o cloth_n can_v receive_v the_o die_n it_o must_v be_v wash_v and_o make_v clean_o also_o the_o image_n of_o god_n and_o of_o the_o devil_n be_v of_o so_o contrary_a nature_n that_o they_o can_v live_v in_o one_o and_o the_o same_o place_n of_o the_o soul_n wherefore_o there_o must_v be_v some_o room_n prepare_v in_o the_o soul_n in_o its_o most_o have_v any_o life_n or_o power_n in_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v as_o be_v say_v the_o devil_n kingdom_n it_o be_v impossible_a for_o it_o to_o do_v any_o work_n unto_o the_o lord_n and_o in_o he_o from_o as_o partly_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n have_v place_n therein_o and_o partly_o the_o unholy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n how_o can_v it_o be_v but_o that_o the_o work_n itself_o shall_v stand_v in_o the_o mixture_n also_o and_o that_o proportional_o according_a to_o the_o mixture_n of_o the_o soul_n own_o state_n and_o condition_n for_o while_o the_o soul_n be_v work_v that_o which_o be_v good_a by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n in_o and_o with_o the_o lord_n will_v the_o power_n of_o the_o unholy_a life_n be_v idle_a and_o asleep_a or_o rather_o will_v they_o not_o work_v in_o opposition_n yea_o will_v not_o the_o devil_n move_v strong_o in_o they_o to_o resist_v and_o mar_v the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n answ._n this_o objection_n indeed_o do_v evince_n that_o the_o thing_n be_v somewhat_o difficult_a but_o not_o impossible_a it_o be_v true_a the_o power_n of_o the_o unholy_a life_n do_v of_o their_o own_o nature_n incline_v to_o work_v in_o opposition_n to_o the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o satan_n will_v never_o be_v want_v as_o much_o as_o he_o can_v to_o move_v and_o stir_v they_o up_o but_o this_o answer_n it_o plain_o that_o as_o the_o soul_n turn_v unto_o the_o lord_n and_o breath_n unto_o he_o through_o the_o power_n of_o his_o own_o life_n and_o spirit_n for_o preservation_n and_o continue_v thus_o inward_o turn_v and_o convert_v unto_o he_o in_o fear_n watchfulness_n and_o singleness_n the_o power_n of_o the_o lord_n god_n come_v over_o the_o unholy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n yea_o and_o over_o the_o whole_a power_n of_o the_o enemy_n therein_o and_o do_v bind_v and_o captivate_v they_o that_o they_o can_v no_o more_o prevail_v to_o hinder_v the_o soul_n from_o do_v the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o purity_n and_o perfection_n in_o a_o measure_n then_o if_o they_o have_v no_o such_o place_n in_o it_o even_o as_o in_o the_o outward_a if_o i_o be_v do_v a_o piece_n of_o work_n and_o some_o strong_a body_a man_n have_v find_v he_o chain_v as_o aforesaid_a but_o when_o we_o have_v but_o a_o little_a become_v remiss_a and_o suffer_v our_o mind_n to_o slide_v back_o from_o that_o diligence_n and_o watchfulness_n as_o be_v requisite_a than_o the_o lord_n suffer_v the_o enemy_n somewhat_o as_o it_o be_v to_o break_v loose_a upon_o we_o and_o use_v his_o strength_n in_o some_o measure_n against_o we_o to_o the_o end_n that_o thereby_o we_o may_v be_v stir_v up_o unto_o the_o more_o watchfulness_n and_o indeed_o many_o time_n we_o find_v it_o so_o with_o we_o in_o this_o matter_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o daily_a experience_n but_o there_o be_v this_o difference_n that_o the_o natural_a life_n after_o it_o have_v come_v to_o its_o height_n do_v decay_n and_o even_o spend_v or_o consume_v itself_o in_o its_o motion_n or_o work_n for_o it_o be_v but_o a_o temporary_a thing_n whereas_o the_o spiritual_a life_n be_v eternal_a and_o do_v never_o at_o any_o time_n decay_n or_o diminish_v through_o its_o work_n but_o be_v thereby_o perpetuate_v it_o be_v such_o a_o good_a plant_n that_o it_o ever_o grow_v and_o flourish_v and_o bring_v forth_o twelve_o manner_n of_o fruit_n every_o month_n where_o it_o be_v well_o occupy_v or_o improve_v and_o never_o of_o its_o own_o nature_n decay_v or_o wax_v barren_a

the_o soul_n to_o hide_v and_o obscure_v the_o light_n and_o as_o it_o be_v to_o extinguish_v and_o quench_v it_o in_o the_o soul_n and_o it_o be_v a_o most_o absurd_a thing_n to_o acknowledge_v the_o main_a stroke_n and_o hand_n in_o the_o business_n at_o other_o time_n the_o divine_a light_n appear_v more_o immediate_o in_o the_o soul_n and_o more_o open_o and_o scarce_o at_o all_o make_v use_v of_o the_o natural_a principle_n or_o understanding_n further_a than_o in_o a_o passive_a way_n as_o when_o the_o eye_n look_v towards_o a_o object_n or_o as_o the_o ear_n hear_v a_o voice_n or_o sound_n wherein_o the_o soul_n be_v rather_o passive_a than_o active_a and_o sometime_o all_o the_o natural_a power_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v draw_v into_o a_o deep_a silence_n by_o the_o mighty_a apprehend_v what_o be_v inward_o reveal_v in_o it_o by_o the_o divine_a light_n but_o they_o all_o be_v silence_v bind_v lock_v up_o and_o as_o it_o be_v make_v asleep_a both_o imagination_n and_o reason_n or_o whatever_o else_o can_v be_v call_v a_o natural_a or_o humane_a faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v whole_o suspend_v and_o lay_v by_o as_o of_o no_o present_a use_n and_o the_o soul_n as_o it_o be_v whole_o dead_a for_o that_o present_a time_n unto_o they_o all_o as_o so_o many_o dead_a member_n the_o divine_a light_n and_o spirit_n do_v raise_v up_o and_o awaken_v in_o that_o soul_n a_o new_a sense_n and_o power_n of_o discern_v of_o which_o it_o former_o have_v no_o experience_n or_o at_o lest_o make_v no_o reflection_n upon_o the_o same_o which_o be_v the_o spiritual_a sensation_n of_o god_n and_o divine_a thing_n as_o inward_o reveal_v by_o the_o divine_a light_n but_o this_o kind_n of_o experience_n be_v more_o rare_a to_o new_a beginner_n and_o to_o who_o it_o be_v give_v be_v a_o most_o singular_a and_o choice_a mercy_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n which_o yet_o be_v most_o ordinary_a to_o all_o those_o who_o in_o any_o considerable_a measure_n be_v true_o convert_v unto_o the_o truth_n and_o leaven_v into_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o and_o if_o it_o shall_v please_v god_n at_o any_o time_n to_o give_v thou_o such_o a_o experience_n who_o be_v not_o yet_o so_o considerable_o convert_v unto_o the_o truth_n thou_o be_v to_o receive_v it_o as_o a_o singular_a favour_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n but_o if_o it_o be_v deny_v at_o present_a unto_o thou_o god_n life_n and_o light_n and_o of_o the_o operation_n thereof_o so_o as_o to_o distinguish_v it_o from_o all_o that_o which_o be_v but_o natural_a and_o carnal_a as_o also_o from_o all_o that_o be_v of_o satan_n in_o his_o cunning_a transforming_n and_o although_o in_o the_o beginning_n it_o will_v be_v very_o hard_a to_o thou_o to_o attain_v to_o that_o perfect_a and_o absolute_a inward_a silence_n of_o mind_n from_o all_o thy_o own_o thought_n and_o imagination_n which_o will_v afterward_o become_v easy_a and_o familiar_a unto_o thou_o as_o thou_o do_v experience_n any_o considerable_a growth_n in_o the_o truth_n yet_o as_o thou_o presse_v after_o it_o thou_o will_v find_v they_o self_n help_v by_o the_o lord_n to_o come_v into_o some_o measure_n of_o true_a silence_n and_o although_o thou_o can_v not_o say_v that_o all_o vain_a foolish_a thought_n and_o idle_a imagination_n be_v put_v out_o of_o thy_o mind_n yet_o if_o a_o considerable_a part_n of_o they_o be_v go_v and_o evanished_a so_o that_o thy_o mind_n be_v somewhat_o more_o cool_a and_o quiet_a and_o still_o and_o empty_a of_o such_o thing_n than_o it_o be_v wont_a to_o be_v here_o thou_o will_v find_v thyself_o at_o some_o advantage_n and_o in_o some_o capacity_n to_o discern_v the_o divine_a light_n and_o work_v thereof_o even_o as_o it_o be_v in_o this_o imperfect_a state_n of_o silence_n or_o half_a silence_n as_o we_o may_v call_v it_o to_o help_v thou_o then_o a_o little_a further_o in_o this_o inquiry_n and_o search_n that_o thou_o may_v come_v to_o know_v discern_v and_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o true_a divine_a light_n and_o work_v thereof_o in_o thou_o which_o be_v indeed_o a_o very_a necessary_a knowledge_n and_o without_o which_o thou_o be_v liable_a to_o sit_v down_o in_o a_o false_a rest_n and_o build_v upon_o a_o false_a foundation_n as_o many_o do_v at_o this_o day_n take_v the_o natural_a light_n and_o principle_n for_o the_o divine_a and_o supernatural_a and_o so_o what_o the_o socinian_o and_o pelagian_n be_v in_o profession_n who_o profess_v no_o high_a principle_n in_o they_o necessary_a than_o the_o natural_a these_o man_n be_v whatever_o they_o profess_v of_o the_o necessity_n of_o have_v and_o be_v illuminate_v and_o lead_v by_o the_o spirit_n real_o in_o practice_n therefore_o that_o thou_o may_v avoid_v this_o snare_n and_o come_v to_o the_o true_a not_o only_o the_o brain_n or_o head_n or_o the_o animal_n part_n and_o affection_n which_o the_o natural_a can_v do_v and_o often_o do_v but_o it_o reach_v also_o the_o heart_n and_o most_o inward_a part_n even_o the_o most_o inward_a affection_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o be_v of_o a_o heavenly_a and_o divine_a nature_n as_o the_o principle_n be_v of_o which_o it_o proceed_v it_o be_v say_v of_o christ_n when_o he_o preach_v outward_o he_o speak_v with_o authority_n or_o power_n and_o not_o as_o the_o scribe_n matth._n 7.29_o and_o he_o say_v himself_o the_o word_n that_o i_o speak_v unto_o it_o be_v say_v in_o psalm_n 29.4_o the_o voice_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v glorious_a the_o voice_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v full_a of_o majesty_n etc._n etc._n and_o although_o many_o soul_n be_v so_o dark_a blind_a deaf_a and_o stupid_a that_o many_o time_n they_o have_v no_o sense_n of_o any_o divine_a power_n or_o principle_n yet_o when_o it_o please_v god_n to_o speak_v in_o the_o most_o deaf_a and_o stupid_a soul_n he_o cause_v it_o to_o hear_v and_o raise_v up_o some_o small_a sense_n of_o the_o same_o in_o it_o at_o that_o present_a time_n although_o soon_o after_o darkness_n and_o death_n do_v prevail_v over_o they_o again_o and_o they_o forget_v any_o such_o experience_n as_o if_o they_o have_v never_o have_v it_o how_o do_v god_n speak_v unto_o cain_n and_o expostulate_v with_o he_o we_o read_v not_o that_o it_o be_v by_o a_o outward_a voice_n nor_o be_v there_o any_o need_n to_o suppose_v that_o when_o god_n reprove_v he_o for_o his_o anger_n against_o his_o brother_n it_o be_v by_o a_o outward_a voice_n and_o not_o rather_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n inward_o in_o his_o heart_n and_o conscience_n as_o he_o do_v reprove_v man_n at_o this_o day_n and_o as_o he_o do_v strive_v in_o man_n before_o the_o deluge_n and_o do_v judge_n and_o reprove_v he_o for_o sin_n gen._n 6.3_o my_o spirit_n shall_v not_o always_o strive_v or_o contend_v in_o man_n
