he_o have_v habit_n and_o quality_n but_o he_o want_v power_n to_o use_v they_o or_o as_o a_o man_n that_o have_v a_o instrument_n that_o will_v sound_v well_o but_o he_o want_v skill_n to_o use_v it_o so_o many_o man_n they_o have_v habit_n and_o quality_n but_o because_o they_o want_v power_n to_o use_v they_o therefore_o they_o be_v not_o strengthen_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n but_o he_o that_o have_v the_o spirit_n have_v withal_o power_n to_o use_v those_o habit_n to_o good_a therefore_o it_o be_v say_v that_o they_o speak_v as_o the_o spirit_n give_v they_o utterance_n that_o be_v be_v this_o if_o it_o be_v but_o a_o common_a spirit_n you_o shall_v find_v that_o it_o will_v do_v by_o you_o as_o the_o angel_n do_v by_o assume_v body_n they_o take_v they_o up_o for_o a_o time_n and_o do_v many_o thing_n with_o they_o to_o serve_v their_o own_o turn_n but_o they_o do_v not_o put_v life_n in_o they_o such_o be_v the_o common_a spirit_n but_o the_o sanctiry_a spirit_n put_v life_n into_o the_o soul_n wherefore_o examine_v yourselves_o whether_o the_o spirit_n make_v you_o live_a man_n or_o no_o for_o when_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n shall_v join_v with_o the_o soul_n of_o a_o man_n it_o will_v make_v he_o to_o do_v suitable_a thing_n and_o bring_v forth_o suitable_a action_n for_o as_o the_o body_n be_v dead_a without_o the_o soul_n so_o the_o soul_n have_v of_o itself_o no_o spiritual_a life_n to_o good_a without_o the_o spirit_n wherefore_o as_o paul_n speak_v of_o unchaste_a widow_n that_o they_o be_v dead_a while_o they_o live_v 1_o tim._n 5._o vers_fw-la 6._o so_o i_o may_v say_v of_o every_o man_n that_o have_v not_o the_o spirit_n they_o be_v dead_a man_n dead_a to_o god_n to_o good_a to_o grace_v to_o holiness_n i_o say_v there_o be_v no_o life_n without_o the_o spirit_n man_n be_v not_o live_v man_n because_o they_o walk_v and_o talk_v and_o the_o like_a but_o they_o be_v live_v man_n that_o live_v in_o the_o spirit_n and_o by_o the_o spirit_n and_o on_o the_o contrary_a there_o be_v no_o true_a life_n neither_o be_v man_n to_o be_v esteem_v live_v man_n that_o want_v the_o spirit_n now_o for_o the_o examination_n of_o ourselves_o by_o this_o rule_n consider_v first_o we_o have_v but_o a_o assume_v 1._o body_n of_o grace_n and_o holiness_n when_o in_o the_o practice_n of_o life_n we_o assume_v unto_o ourselves_o only_o the_o outward_a form_n of_o godliness_n but_o regard_v not_o the_o power_n cleave_v in_o our_o affection_n to_o that_o which_o be_v evil_a and_o leave_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v true_o good_a i_o do_v not_o say_v when_o you_o hate_v good_a but_o when_o you_o prefer_v evil_a before_o it_o in_o your_o choice_n and_o set_v it_o at_o the_o high_a end_n of_o the_o table_n and_o serve_v it_o first_o and_o attend_v upon_o it_o most_o when_o that_o cross_v holiness_n but_o you_o will_v not_o again_o cross_v it_o for_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n when_o it_o be_v thus_o with_o you_o whatsoever_o you_o think_v of_o yourselves_o you_o have_v not_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n but_o a_o common_a spirit_n without_o life_n second_o you_o have_v but_o a_o assume_v body_n of_o grace_n if_o you_o have_v it_o not_o in_o a_o feel_a manner_n the_o 2._o sanctify_a spirit_n work_v a_o spiritual_a sense_n and_o taste_v in_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v if_o you_o have_v the_o sanctify_a spirit_n then_o holy_a thing_n will_v have_v a_o good_a taste_n they_o will_v be_v sweet_a unto_o you_o it_o will_v purge_v out_o that_o which_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o growth_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n on_o the_o contrary_a the_o common_a spirit_n will_v never_o make_v you_o to_o taste_v grace_n as_o it_o be_v grace_n or_o because_o it_o be_v grace_n that_o be_v grace_n will_v not_o be_v a_o dainty_a thing_n it_o will_v be_v without_o a_o good_a savour_n therefore_o examine_v what_o taste_n of_o good_a you_o have_v whether_o you_o can_v relish_v grace_n or_o no_o if_o not_o you_o have_v not_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n but_o a_o assume_v habit_n of_o grace_n that_o be_v a_o common_a spirit_n without_o the_o life_n of_o grace_n three_o as_o assume_v body_n be_v unconstant_a that_o be_v walk_v only_o for_o a_o time_n but_o they_o walk_v not_o always_o 3._o even_o so_o if_o you_o have_v but_o a_o common_a spirit_n you_o will_v not_o be_v constant_a in_o good_a but_o off_o and_o on_o the_o rule_n a_o man_n that_o be_v live_v in_o christ_n you_o shall_v still_o find_v he_o live_v and_o move_v and_o do_v the_o action_n of_o the_o new_a man_n a_o man_n that_o have_v but_o a_o common_a spirit_n may_v do_v something_n that_o be_v good_a he_o may_v keep_v and_o press_v down_o some_o sin_n awhile_o but_o not_o always_o neither_o then_o because_o it_o be_v sin_n but_o because_o it_o cross_v his_o profit_n or_o pleasure_n or_o some_o other_o thing_n again_o he_o may_v have_v some_o taste_n and_o relish_v of_o spiritual_a thing_n but_o he_o be_v not_o purge_v and_o cleanse_v by_o they_o first_o he_o may_v walk_v as_o a_o live_a man_n walk_v that_o be_v perform_v holy_a duty_n but_o they_o be_v not_o constant_a in_o holy_a duty_n neither_o do_v they_o perform_v they_o in_o obedience_n but_o out_o of_o self_n love_n that_o be_v they_o be_v still_o ebb_v and_o seldom_o flow_v they_o omit_v oft_o than_o they_o perform_v therefore_o let_v i_o exhort_v you_o that_o be_v alive_a and_o have_v be_v dead_a be_v you_o careful_a to_o prize_v your_o life_n and_o you_o that_o have_v be_v alive_a but_o now_o be_v dead_a that_o be_v you_o that_o have_v fall_v from_o your_o holiness_n and_o zeal_n and_o have_v lose_v your_o first_o love_n and_o strength_n labour_v now_o to_o recover_v it_o again_o and_o you_o that_o be_v alive_a and_o yet_o be_v fall_v let_v i_o exhort_v you_o to_o strengthen_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v ready_a to_o die_v if_o there_o be_v any_o here_o
more_o even_o as_o water_n harden_v iron_n when_o it_o be_v hot_a but_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n work_v other_o effect_n therefore_o the_o apostle_n say_v i_o be_v glad_a that_o you_o be_v sorrowful_a because_o it_o wrought_v repentance_n in_o you_o that_o be_v it_o change_v your_o heart_n so_o much_o for_o this_o question_n the_o four_o question_n be_v this_o whether_o there_o be_v any_o difference_n between_o the_o godly_a sorrow_n and_o quest._n that_o which_o be_v false_a to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o they_o differ_v in_o three_o thing_n especial_o 1._o in_o the_o object_n 1._o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n he_o look_v upon_o these_o without_o any_o relation_n to_o christ_n but_o the_o object_n of_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v sin_n as_o it_o stand_v in_o opposition_n with_o the_o love_n of_o god_n towards_o he_o in_o christ_n and_o howsoever_o a_o regenerate_a man_n look_v upon_o the_o punishment_n yet_o in_o a_o different_a degree_n not_o so_o much_o because_o he_o fear_v punishment_n as_o that_o he_o shall_v give_v his_o father_n such_o cause_n to_o take_v such_o displeasure_n against_o he_o but_o it_o be_v sin_n that_o he_o principal_o look_v upon_o viz._n that_o he_o have_v displease_v so_o good_a so_o gracious_a a_o father_n as_o god_n have_v be_v unto_o he_o and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o work_v humiliation_n in_o he_o but_o the_o other_o see_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o hell_n death_n and_o that_o final_a separation_n between_o he_o and_o happiness_n and_o hereupon_o for_o fear_v of_o punishment_n he_o be_v humble_v thus_o you_o see_v the_o difference_n in_o the_o object_n the_o second_o difference_n be_v in_o the_o cause_n the_o cause_n of_o the_o worldly_a sorrow_n be_v either_o some_o judgement_n 2._o present_a either_o upon_o his_o person_n or_o in_o his_o substance_n or_o in_o his_o family_n or_o else_o it_o be_v some_o judgement_n that_o he_o fear_v god_n will_v inflict_v upon_o he_o hereafter_o either_o in_o his_o riches_n or_o in_o his_o credit_n and_o reputation_n among_o man_n and_o therefore_o for_o fear_v of_o these_o he_o be_v humble_v but_o the_o cause_n of_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v the_o apprehension_n of_o sin_n as_o it_o be_v contrary_a unto_o the_o nature_n purity_n and_o perfection_n of_o god_n as_o also_o of_o god_n love_n towards_o a_o man_n he_o have_v a_o eye_n give_v he_o whereby_o he_o see_v into_o the_o riches_n of_o god_n love_n unto_o he_o and_o then_o reflect_v upon_o himself_o and_o see_v his_o carriage_n towards_o god_n for_o such_o mercy_n and_o find_v no_o proportion_n between_o they_o hence_o grow_v his_o sorrow_n that_o he_o shall_v thus_o requite_v god_n with_o sin_n for_o mercy_n the_o three_o difference_n be_v in_o the_o effect_n for_o as_o they_o 3._o do_v proceed_v not_o from_o one_o and_o the_o same_o ground_n so_o they_o bring_v not_o forth_o the_o same_o but_o contrary_a effect_n and_o they_o be_v three_o fold_n first_o worldly_a sorrow_n it_o draw_v the_o affection_n of_o the_o heart_n from_o god_n because_o they_o see_v he_o as_o a_o judge_n they_o can_v love_v he_o as_o a_o father_n he_o take_v god_n to_o be_v his_o enemy_n and_o therefore_o do_v what_o he_o can_v to_o fly_v from_o he_o because_o he_o expect_v no_o good_a from_o he_o this_o we_o see_v as_o before_o in_o adam_n cain_n and_o judas_n but_o the_o godly_a sorrow_n it_o make_v a_o man_n cleave_v fast_o unto_o christ_n to_o stick_v fast_o unto_o grace_n it_o whet_v the_o affection_n to_o love_n christ_n to_o prize_n christ_n more_o it_o work_v a_o willing_a readiness_n in_o the_o soul_n to_o obey_v it_o put_v by_o that_o which_o will_v make_v he_o fly_v from_o christ_n second_o worldly_a sorrow_n it_o hurt_v the_o body_n it_o breed_v disease_n it_o waste_v and_o consume_v the_o entrail_n breed_v and_o bring_v consumption_n of_o the_o body_n it_o dull_v and_o make_v dead_a the_o soul_n it_o take_v away_o the_o relish_n of_o spiritual_a thing_n it_o make_v a_o man_n careless_a to_o good_a it_o daule_v and_o make_v a_o man_n unwilling_a unto_o any_o good_a but_o the_o godly_a sorrow_n it_o be_v the_o life_n of_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v the_o health_n of_o the_o body_n it_o quicken_v the_o soul_n of_o man_n unto_o good_a it_o put_v a_o new_a life_n into_o it_o it_o work_v a_o readiness_n in_o the_o will_n and_o love_n in_o the_o affection_n to_o christ_n grace_n and_o holiness_n three_o worldly_a sorrow_n it_o make_v a_o man_n of_o a_o hot_a and_o a_o fiery_a spirit_n it_o stir_v he_o up_o after_o evil_a to_o reproach_n and_o disgrace_v his_o neighbour_n it_o fill_v he_o full_a of_o hatred_n revenge_n and_o envy_v but_o godly_a sorrow_n it_o breed_v another_o kind_n of_o spirit_n in_o he_o it_o make_v he_o of_o a_o meek_a and_o a_o quiet_a spirit_n worldly_a sorrow_n will_v not_o put_v up_o reproach_n disgrace_n and_o wrong_v but_o this_o will_v put_v up_o all_o injury_n and_o wrong_n and_o whatsoever_o else_o he_o meet_v withal_o for_o christ_n thus_o you_o see_v the_o difference_n between_o these_o the_o five_o question_n be_v this_o how_o shall_v i_o know_v quest._n whether_o my_o sorrow_n be_v a_o godly_a sorrow_n or_o no._n to_o this_o i_o answer_v you_o shall_v know_v it_o by_o these_o three_o thing_n 1._o by_o the_o ingredient_n answ._n  _fw-fr 2._o by_o the_o continuance_n  _fw-fr 3_o by_o the_o event_n first_o i_o say_v you_o shall_v know_v it_o by_o the_o ingredient_n for_o first_o they_o have_v not_o only_o the_o sense_n of_o 1._o punishment_n which_o be_v common_a unto_o the_o worldly_a sorrow_n for_o i_o say_v howsoever_o it_o be_v the_o property_n of_o worldly_a sorrow_n to_o apprehend_v punishment_n yet_o it_o be_v likewise_o require_v of_o godly_a sorrow_n to_o be_v sensible_a of_o punishment_n but_o there_o be_v another_o light_n put_v into_o he_o whereby_o he_o see_v into_o the_o uncleanness_n of_o sin_n he_o see_v sin_n in_o its_o own_o dye_n not_o only_a sin_n to_o be_v sin_n but_o sin_n to_o be_v vile_a and_o hereupon_o he_o will_v not_o content_v himself_o with_o mercy_n unless_o he_o may_v have_v grace_n but_o the_o other_o care_v not_o if_o he_o may_v be_v free_a from_o punishment_n whether_o he_o have_v strength_n against_o corruption_n or_o no._n second_o you_o shall_v know_v it_o by_o the_o continuance_n 2._o of_o it_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v constant_a but_o worldly_a sorrow_n be_v but_o a_o passion_n of_o the_o mind_n it_o change_v it_o last_v not_o though_o for_o the_o present_a it_o may_v be_v violent_a and_o strong_a and_o work_n much_o outward_o yet_o it_o come_v but_o by_o fit_n and_o continue_v not_o like_o a_o land_n flood_n which_o violent_o for_o the_o present_a overflows_a the_o bank_n but_o it_o will_v away_o again_o it_o be_v not_o always_o thus_o but_o the_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v like_o a_o spring_n that_o still_o keep_v his_o run_n it_o be_v not_o dry_v up_o but_o run_v still_o it_o be_v not_o so_o violent_a as_o the_o other_o but_o it_o be_v more_o sure_a you_o shall_v have_v it_o still_o run_v both_o winter_n and_o summer_n wet_a and_o dry_a in_o hot_a and_o cold_a early_o and_o late_o so_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v the_o same_o in_o a_o regenerate_a man_n still_o take_v he_o when_o you_o will_v he_o be_v still_o sorrow_v for_o sin_n this_o godly_a sorrow_n it_o stand_v like_o the_o centre_n of_o the_o earth_n which_o remove_v not_o but_o still_o remain_v three_o you_o shall_v know_v it_o by_o the_o success_n and_o 3._o event_n of_o it_o it_o will_v turn_v the_o heart_n unto_o christ_n it_o will_v make_v the_o heart_n stand_v more_o firm_a in_o grace_n it_o will_v turn_v the_o whole_a frame_n of_o the_o soul_n unto_o god_n like_o the_o loadstone_n that_o will_v not_o rest_v till_o it_o have_v touch_v the_o iron_n or_o as_o the_o needle_n touch_v will_v not_o stand_v till_o it_o touch_v the_o north-pole_n so_o it_o be_v with_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n when_o a_o man_n have_v receive_v but_o a_o touch_n of_o the_o spirit_n he_o will_v never_o rest_v till_o he_o have_v touch_v christ_n till_o he_o be_v at_o peace_n with_o he_o nothing_o will_v satisfy_v he_o till_o christ_n come_v into_o the_o soul_n till_o christ_n be_v his_o nothing_o will_v make_v he_o to_o remove_v that_o confidence_n and_o trust_v that_o he_o have_v in_o christ_n all_o thing_n shall_v go_v for_o christ._n but_o the_o worldly_a sorrow_n have_v another_o success_n namely_o to_o fly_v fast_o away_o from_o god_n as_o i_o have_v show_v in_o judas_n and_o caine._n and_o thus_o much_o for_o this_o question_n the_o six_o question_n
and_o servitude_n that_o there_o in_o make_v brick_n they_o do_v undergo_v his_o second_o deceit_n be_v this_o he_o tell_v we_o that_o though_o we_o sin_n yet_o we_o may_v escape_v and_o go_v to_o and_o repent_v when_o sickness_n come_v this_o will_v hardly_o prove_v true_a repentance_n for_o judas_n do_v so_o this_o repentance_n most_o common_o rise_v from_o self-love_n every_o creature_n love_v his_o own_o safety_n so_o at_o death_n a_o man_n be_v willing_a to_o leave_v sin_n but_o this_o come_v from_o nature_n and_o self-love_n because_o he_o will_v not_o go_v to_o hell_n and_o most_o common_o theseman_n if_o it_o please_v god_n that_o ever_o they_o recover_v out_o of_o their_o sickness_n they_o fall_v into_o the_o same_o course_n again_o four_o he_o will_v excuse_v our_o sin_n by_o some_o virtue_n wherewith_o it_o have_v affinity_n he_o will_v put_v on_o we_o deceit_n palliata_fw-la vitia_fw-la those_o vice_n that_o have_v some_o nearness_n to_o virtue_n i_o answer_v howsoever_o the_o devil_n may_v use_v such_o distinction_n to_o help_v out_o his_o bait_n to_o sin_n for_o a_o time_n answ._n yet_o in_o the_o time_n of_o trouble_n they_o will_v not_o hold_v out_o second_o that_o we_o commit_v thereby_o original_a transgression_n we_o have_v you_o know_v a_o part_n in_o adam_n sin_n by_o propagation_n now_o if_o we_o have_v a_o hand_n in_o it_o ourselves_o by_o our_o strong_a inclination_n thereunto_o we_o ourselves_o be_v cause_n thereof_o likewise_o let_v we_o not_o therefore_o go_v about_o to_o excuse_v ourselves_o with_o this_o that_o because_o i_o be_o be_v this_o see_v the_o object_n of_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v sin_n whether_o there_o be_v any_o degree_n quest._n of_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o howsoever_o sin_n be_v the_o chief_a cause_n of_o godly_a sorrow_n yet_o notwithstanding_o answ._n it_o admit_v of_o degree_n there_o be_v divers_a degree_n according_a unto_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o thing_n conceive_v some_o sorrow_n more_o and_o some_o less_o according_a to_o the_o proportion_n of_o grace_n receive_v every_o one_o in_o one_o degree_n or_o other_o but_o the_o cause_n in_o every_o one_o be_v proper_o sin_n but_o these_o degree_n of_o sorrow_n proceed_v from_o a_o threefold_a cause_n first_o because_o god_n will_v give_v more_o grace_n unto_o one_o then_o unto_o another_o where_o he_o do_v intend_v to_o make_v a_o great_a building_n of_o grace_n there_o he_o will_v lay_v a_o deep_a foundation_n of_o godly_a sorrow_n and_o on_o the_o contrary_a where_o he_o do_v intend_v to_o bestow_v less_o grace_n there_o a_o lesser_a foundation_n will_v serve_v as_o in_o a_o temporal_a build_n no_o wise_a man_n will_v lay_v a_o great_a foundation_n to_o a_o little_a house_n but_o will_v proportion_v it_o according_a to_o his_o build_n second_o because_o he_o seem_v to_o love_v some_o above_o other_o he_o express_v himself_o more_o unto_o some_o then_o unto_o other_o now_o where_o god_n will_v express_v a_o large_a measure_n of_o love_n there_o he_o will_v work_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o godly_a sorrow_n as_o a_o father_n love_v that_o child_n best_o that_o he_o beat_v most_o three_o because_o some_o have_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n than_o other_o some_o have_v receive_v a_o great_a measure_n of_o illumination_n then_o other_o now_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o forceable_a to_o make_v a_o man_n humble_a then_o to_o be_v spiritual_o enlighten_v so_o long_o as_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n do_v not_o come_v unto_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o excellency_n that_o be_v in_o christ_n and_o grace_n he_o will_v never_o be_v humble_v the_o seven_o question_n be_v this_o what_o be_v the_o least_o measure_n of_o humiliation_n quest._n to_o this_o i_o answer_v the_o least_o measure_n of_o humiliation_n necessary_a be_v that_o which_o make_v a_o man_n believe_v answ._n in_o christ_n viz._n make_v he_o to_o fly_v unto_o he_o and_o to_o prize_n christ_n above_o all_o thing_n as_o the_o prodigal_n he_o do_v not_o at_o the_o first_o go_v unto_o his_o father_n but_o he_o consider_v of_o it_o and_o when_o he_o see_v no_o way_n to_o escape_v than_o he_o say_v i_o will_v go_v unto_o my_o father_n so_o a_o christian_n that_o have_v the_o least_o measure_n of_o humiliation_n and_o godly_a sorrow_n it_o will_v make_v he_o to_o fly_v unto_o christ_n the_o least_o measure_n will_v give_v he_o such_o a_o sight_n of_o sin_n and_o such_o a_o glimpse_n of_o glory_n that_o he_o will_v prize_v it_o above_o all_o thing_n it_o will_v show_v he_o that_o there_o be_v no_o way_n to_o escape_v hell_n but_o by_o go_v unto_o christ_n that_o nothing_o will_v satisfy_v for_o sin_n but_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n nothing_o so_o excellent_a as_o grace_v and_o holiness_n be_v it_o will_v tell_v he_o that_o he_o that_o will_v be_v christ_n disciple_n must_v do_v these_o two_o thing_n first_o he_o must_v deny_v himself_o he_o must_v renounce_v all_o trust_n and_o confidence_n in_o any_o thing_n for_o salvation_n without_o christ_n and_o he_o must_v deny_v all_o ability_n to_o work_v that_o which_o be_v good_a without_o the_o spirit_n second_o he_o must_v take_v up_o the_o cross_n that_o be_v he_o must_v suffer_v what_o god_n will_v have_v he_o either_o in_o his_o name_n or_o body_n or_o good_n this_o be_v the_o last_o measure_n requisite_a without_o which_o thou_o will_v not_o receive_v christ_n and_o thus_o much_o for_o this_o last_o question_n be_v it_o so_o that_o humiliation_n be_v so_o necessary_a to_o the_o use_v right_a receive_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o gospel_n this_o shall_v teach_v we_o to_o consider_v our_o condition_n and_o estate_n whether_o we_o have_v this_o condition_n in_o we_o or_o no_o let_v every_o man_n by_o this_o try_v his_o condition_n whether_o he_o have_v receive_v christ_n or_o no_o and_o this_o must_v not_o be_v outward_o but_o inward_o not_o a_o sorrow_n in_o show_n but_o in_o substance_n and_o think_v not_o that_o a_o little_a sob_a and_o sigh_v will_v serve_v the_o turn_n a_o little_a ring_n of_o the_o hand_n a_o few_o tear_n and_o a_o little_a hang_v down_o of_o the_o head_n but_o it_o must_v be_v a_o deep_a humiliation_n such_o a_o humiliation_n that_o proceed_v from_o the_o spirit_n in_o roman_n 8._o 15._o you_o have_v not_o receive_v the_o spirit_n again_o to_o fear_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n you_o 15._o once_o have_v a_o slavish_a fear_n a_o fear_n contrary_a unto_o this_o true_a fear_n which_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n but_o you_o shall_v not_o have_v it_o again_o but_o that_o humiliation_n shall_v proceed_v from_o another_o ground_n namely_o from_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n whereby_o you_o shall_v fear_v he_o not_o as_o a_o judge_n but_o as_o a_o father_n therefore_o let_v every_o man_n enter_v into_o his_o own_o heart_n and_o see_v whether_o this_o condition_n be_v in_o he_o or_o no_o and_o think_v not_o to_o come_v unto_o christ_n or_o to_o be_v ingraft_v into_o christ_n without_o it_o for_o as_o i_o say_v howsoever_o it_o be_v not_o simple_o necessary_a on_o god_n part_n yet_o it_o be_v necessary_a humiliation_n i_o will_v show_v you_o in_o five_o particular_n that_o a_o man_n can_v receive_v the_o gospel_n except_o he_o be_v humble_v first_o a_o man_n or_o woman_n must_v be_v humble_a or_o else_o he_o will_v not_o receive_v jesus_n christ._n to_o receive_v jesus_n 1._o christ_n be_v the_o first_o act_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o therefore_o we_o preach_v the_o gospel_n general_o unto_o all_o that_o whosoever_o will_v may_v have_v christ_n but_o you_o must_v first_o receive_v he_o and_o this_o you_o will_v not_o do_v till_o you_o be_v humble_v till_o you_o think_v you_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o christ_n till_o then_o you_o will_v think_v the_o work_n too_o great_a and_o wage_n too_o small_a as_o for_o example_n a_o woman_n must_v first_o receive_v her_o husband_n and_o be_v unite_v unto_o he_o before_o she_o can_v be_v make_v partaker_n either_o of_o his_o riches_n or_o honour_n so_o before_o a_o christian_a can_v be_v make_v partaker_n of_o the_o benefit_n of_o christ_n he_o must_v deny_v himself_o and_o cleave_v whole_o unto_o christ_n and_o receive_v he_o so_o as_o to_o be_v rule_v by_o he_o and_o to_o suffer_v for_o he_o but_o some_o man_n will_v say_v this_o be_v too_o much_o what_o object_n must_v i_o so_o receive_v christ_n that_o i_o must_v forsake_v all_o thing_n for_o he_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v it_o be_v no_o marvel_n though_o thou_o think_v so_o because_o thou_o be_v not_o as_o yet_o humble_v answ._n but_o if_o thou_o be_v humble_v thou_o will_v never_o stick_v at_o any_o thing_n when_o a_o man_n be_v humble_v he_o be_v then_o in_o the_o condition_n that_o he_o shall_v be_v both_o to_o deny_v himself_o take_v up_o the_o cross_n and_o to_o follow_v christ_n when_o a_o man_n be_v humble_v than_o he_o care_v not_o to_o be_v trample_v under_o foot_n for_o christ_n to_o suffer_v disgrace_n reproach_n and_o shame_n for_o christ_n but_o till_o then_o a_o man_n will_v not_o something_n a_o man_n will_v do_v but_o not_o this_o therefore_o it_o be_v necessary_a to_o the_o receive_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o a_o man_n be_v humble_a second_o to_o receive_v the_o gospel_n be_v to_o entertain_v christ_n into_o the_o soul_n he_o that_o entertain_v 2._o christ_n so_o must_v retain_v he_o and_o continue_v with_o he_o he_o must_v not_o take_v christ_n for_o a_o day_n or_o a_o year_n but_o he_o must_v take_v christ_n as_o a_o woman_n do_v her_o husband_n for_o term_v of_o life_n nay_o after_o life_n and_o that_o in_o such_o a_o manner_n with_o such_o a_o holy_a demeanour_n of_o himself_o that_o he_o may_v not_o give_v the_o least_o occasion_n of_o evil_n that_o may_v be_v to_o christ._n you_o must_v take_v heed_n of_o grieve_v the_o spirit_n and_o you_o must_v resist_v the_o work_n of_o the_o devil_n if_o you_o contract_v with_o christ_n you_o must_v takehee_v of_o despise_v he_o take_v heed_n of_o give_v the_o spirit_n a_o nonplus_n and_o you_o must_v continue_v in_o all_o estate_n and_o keep_v as_o the_o apostle_n say_v your_o profession_n
without_o waver_v i_o say_v howsoever_o a_o man_n may_v practice_v and_o promise_n and_o do_v much_o for_o christ_n yet_o except_o he_o be_v humble_v he_o will_v not_o hold_v out_o and_o therefore_o we_o see_v in_o many_o that_o there_o be_v bubble_n of_o grace_n as_o if_o they_o will_v retain_v christ_n and_o continue_v with_o he_o they_o do_v something_o but_o they_o do_v not_o persevere_v to_o the_o end_n like_o those_o in_o hebr._n 6._o 5._o that_o have_v taste_v that_o be_v profess_v but_o fall_v away_o and_o this_o be_v the_o fault_n of_o the_o three_o ground_n they_o receive_v the_o gospel_n but_o they_o continue_v not_o christ_n enter_v not_o into_o they_o deep_a enough_o now_o the_o difference_n of_o the_o four_o ground_n be_v humiliation_n every_o ground_n be_v plough_v but_o none_o plough_v to_o purpose_n but_o the_o four_o ground_n when_o there_o be_v but_o a_o outward_a show_n of_o holiness_n in_o a_o man_n it_o will_v not_o keep_v his_o colour_n always_o it_o may_v glister_v and_o carry_v a_o show_n of_o the_o right_a stamp_n but_o when_o it_o come_v to_o trial_n it_o be_v but_o counterfeit_n but_o when_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n come_v and_o touch_v the_o heart_n of_o a_o christian_a and_o he_o be_v thorough_o humble_v he_o will_v never_o loose_v his_o beauty_n he_o be_v gold_n try_v he_o how_o you_o will_n three_o to_o receive_v the_o gospel_n be_v to_o take_v christ_n and_o to_o part_v with_o all_o thing_n for_o christ_n make_v 3._o he_o his_o chief_a joy_n prize_v he_o so_o that_o he_o will_v loose_v any_o thing_n for_o he_o like_o that_o wise_a merchant_n in_o the_o gospel_n which_o when_o he_o have_v find_v the_o jewel_n go_v and_o sell_v all_o that_o he_o have_v and_o buy_v it_o there_o must_v be_v a_o prize_v of_o christ_n above_o a_o man_n self_n he_o must_v part_v with_o all_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n with_o husband_n and_o wife_n with_o father_n and_o mother_n with_o brother_n and_o sister_n with_o friend_n with_o honour_n and_o riches_n pleasure_n and_o all_o thing_n else_o and_o account_n christ_n more_o than_o all_o thing_n now_o this_o a_o man_n will_v not_o do_v till_o he_o be_v humble_v but_o you_o will_v say_v what_o must_v i_o forsake_v father_n and_o mother_n and_o wife_n for_o christ_n or_o else_o i_o can_v object_n have_v he_o this_o be_v a_o hard_a thing_n the_o work_n be_v too_o great_a there_o be_v not_o sure_a such_o need_n of_o christ_n or_o grace_n or_o at_o the_o least_o christ_n will_v not_o impose_v such_o a_o burden_n upon_o i_o i_o answer_v yea_o you_o must_v forsake_v all_o these_o thing_n if_o you_o will_v not_o you_o shall_v never_o have_v he_o this_o be_v answ._n the_o fault_n of_o the_o second_o ground_n there_o be_v both_o a_o receive_n and_o a_o rejoice_v in_o christ_n and_o this_o be_v a_o good_a property_n but_o yet_o there_o be_v not_o joy_n enough_o because_o there_o be_v not_o humiliation_n enough_o the_o plough_n have_v not_o go_v deep_o enough_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o they_o continue_v not_o some_o thing_n he_o will_v do_v but_o not_o all_o thing_n for_o christ_n but_o when_o the_o heart_n be_v humble_v that_o be_v when_o the_o plough_n have_v go_v deep_o enough_o in_o humble_v a_o man_n then_o he_o will_v and_o not_o till_o then_o make_v christ_n his_o chief_a joy_n four_o to_o receive_v the_o gospel_n be_v to_o trust_v in_o christ_n whole_o to_o depend_v upon_o he_o both_o for_o 4._o grace_n and_o salvation_n and_o every_o thing_n else_o that_o be_v good_a he_o will_v labour_v to_o know_v the_o length_n and_o the_o height_n the_o depth_n and_o the_o breadth_n of_o the_o riches_n of_o christ_n he_o will_v look_v still_o unto_o the_o preciousness_n of_o christ_n because_o he_o will_v not_o have_v his_o mind_n exercise_v about_o vain_a and_o foolish_a thing_n and_o this_o no_o man_n will_v do_v till_o he_o be_v humble_v no_o man_n will_v see_v his_o need_n till_o he_o be_v humble_v he_o fear_v nothing_o he_o think_v he_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o nothing_o but_o when_o a_o man_n be_v bring_v to_o see_v hell_n he_o will_v cry_v for_o christ_n and_o grace_n than_o he_o will_v prize_v thing_n according_a to_o their_o worth_n than_o he_o will_v see_v such_o excellency_n in_o christ_n that_o he_o never_o see_v in_o any_o thing_n else_o such_o a_o infiniteness_n of_o purity_n and_o holiness_n such_o abundance_n of_o sanctification_n and_o redemption_n such_o joy_n such_o glory_n and_o such_o pleasure_n such_o love_n such_o content_a as_o be_v not_o in_o any_o thing_n else_o now_o he_o will_v deny_v the_o world_n profit_n or_o pleasure_n or_o any_o thing_n else_o and_o seek_v depend_v and_o trust_v whole_o in_o christ._n five_o to_o receive_v the_o gospel_n be_v to_o do_v and_o suffer_v what_o be_v command_v he_o as_o paul_n in_o this_o 5._o place_n lord_n what_o will_v thou_o have_v i_o to_o do_v as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v i_o be_o ready_a both_o to_o do_v and_o suffer_v whatsoever_o thou_o will_v have_v i_o and_o paul_n be_v as_o good_a as_o his_o word_n as_o appear_v by_o those_o reproach_n and_o suffering_n that_o he_o bear_v for_o christ_n always_o make_v ready_a to_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n for_o christ_n now_o such_o a_o disposition_n no_o man_n will_v have_v such_o a_o thing_n no_o man_n will_v do_v till_o he_o be_v first_o humble_v yet_o as_o i_o say_v a_o man_n may_v do_v some_o thing_n as_o the_o dead_a hand_n of_o the_o dial_n it_o may_v perhaps_o point_v right_a at_o one_o stroke_n without_o the_o help_n of_o the_o master-wheele_n but_o to_o go_v round_o and_o miss_v none_o it_o can_v so_o a_o carnal_a man_n may_v hit_v upon_o some_o good_a duty_n that_o god_n command_v and_o refrain_v some_o sin_n that_o god_n forbid_v but_o to_o go_v through_o he_o can_v to_o take_v up_o reproach_n and_o disgrace_n to_o lose_v his_o credit_n to_o forsake_v his_o friend_n to_o lose_v honour_n and_o riches_n and_o pleasure_n this_o he_o will_v not_o do_v till_o he_o be_v humble_v therefore_o labour_v to_o see_v the_o necessity_n of_o this_o duty_n of_o humiliation_n or_o else_o you_o will_v not_o do_v all_o thing_n for_o christ_n and_o labour_n to_o get_v the_o degree_n of_o it_o and_o withal_o get_v the_o degree_n of_o grace_n and_o that_o will_v increase_v spiritual_a sorrow_n and_o degree_n of_o sorrow_n make_v degree_n of_o joy_n a_o man_n or_o woman_n that_o never_o sorrow_n or_o never_o have_v the_o degree_n of_o sorrow_n never_o true_o rejoice_v in_o christ_n for_o as_o the_o spirit_n work_v grace_n and_o grace_n work_v true_a humiliation_n so_o true_a humiliation_n work_v joy_n therefore_o you_o see_v it_o be_v necessary_a again_o there_o will_v be_v no_o suffering_n for_o christ_n till_o there_o be_v rejoice_v in_o christ_n a_o man_n will_v not_o either_o do_v any_o thing_n or_o suffer_v any_o thing_n for_o that_o thing_n that_o he_o can_v delight_v in_o therefore_o labour_v to_o be_v humble_v now_o to_o help_v you_o in_o this_o work_n i_o will_v lay_v down_o some_o mean_n by_o which_o you_o may_v come_v unto_o mean_n this_o humiliation_n of_o spirit_n the_o first_o mean_n to_o get_v this_o humiliation_n be_v to_o get_v the_o judgement_n rectify_v because_o man_n can_v see_v sin_n nor_o know_v it_o till_o then_o and_o man_n will_v not_o be_v humble_a so_o long_o as_o they_o remain_v ignorant_a but_o when_o the_o judgement_n be_v rectify_v than_o he_o know_v sin_n to_o be_v the_o great_a evil_n again_o a_o man_n will_v not_o sorrow_n till_o he_o have_v a_o fit_a object_n for_o sorrow_n as_o a_o blind_a man_n can_v see_v any_o object_n so_o a_o natural_a man_n be_v a_o blind_a man_n and_o he_o must_v have_v new_a eye_n sight_n before_o he_o can_v see_v sin_n to_o sorrow_n for_o it_o as_o sin_n and_o this_o be_v the_o rectify_v of_o the_o judgement_n but_o when_o the_o judgement_n be_v rectify_v than_o it_o will_v sorrow_n for_o sin_n and_o that_o in_o these_o respect_n first_o because_o sin_n be_v of_o its_o own_o nature_n evil_a because_o it_o be_v contrary_a unto_o the_o nature_n of_o good_a and_o 1._o of_o its_o own_o nature_n be_v a_o enemy_n unto_o god_n the_o philosopher_n say_v if_o god_n be_v the_o chief_a good_a than_o sin_n be_v the_o chief_a evil_n from_o whence_o we_o may_v thus_o argue_v that_o which_o be_v most_o contrary_a to_o god_n be_v the_o great_a evil_n but_o sin_n be_v most_o contrary_a unto_o god_n therefore_o it_o be_v the_o great_a evil_n and_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o sin_n be_v that_o which_o make_v the_o creature_n most_o odious_a unto_o god_n no_o creature_n or_o thing_n so_o contrary_a unto_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n as_o sin_n be_v unto_o god_n nothing_o make_v god_n to_o
judgement_n shall_v be_v more_o if_o you_o be_v a_o example_n either_o of_o evil_a to_o other_o or_o evil_a to_o yourself_o i_o say_v the_o great_a you_o be_v in_o place_n the_o great_a shall_v be_v your_o care_n because_o the_o great_a be_v your_o sin_n inferior_n depend_v upon_o superior_n consider_v i_o pray_v if_o you_o be_v eminent_a in_o place_n what_o a_o good_a example_n from_o you_o you_o must_v be_v earnest_a with_o god_n to_o get_v the_o spirit_n for_o this_o mean_n make_v the_o law_n effectual_a the_o flesh_n profit_v nothing_o 3._o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n that_o quicken_v the_o law_n and_o the_o letter_n of_o the_o law_n will_v not_o work_v grace_n in_o you_o no_o more_o than_o the_o flesh_n will_v except_o the_o spirit_n go_v with_o it_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n that_o always_o enlighten_v the_o mind_n and_o work_v a_o change_n in_o the_o whole_a man_n and_o put_v new_a habit_n on_o the_o faculty_n and_o object_n sit_v for_o those_o habit_n and_o here_o now_o appear_v the_o difference_n between_o the_o law_n and_o the_o gospel_n nothing_o will_v make_v a_o man_n true_o humble_a without_o the_o spirit_n if_o the_o lord_n shall_v speak_v unto_o you_o this_o
