unto_o they_o divine_a worship_n we_o must_v careful_o abstain_v again_o unlawful_a if_o the_o divine_a worship_n of_o saint_n be_v here_o condemn_v then_o much_o more_o be_v the_o worship_v of_o their_o relic_n then_o also_o be_v their_o institute_n and_o observe_v fast_a day_n and_o holy_a day_n unto_o their_o saint_n here_o just_o reprove_v neither_o can_v our_o church_n herein_o be_v themselves_o with_o those_o miracle_n which_o christ_n do_v ordinary_o work_v among_o they_o three_o a_o man_n tempt_v god_n when_o he_o go_v on_o in_o any_o sin_n against_o god_n commandment_n for_o have_v be_v exercise_v therein_o some_o for_o a_o year_n or_o two_o other_o for_o long_a time_n even_o many_o year_n together_o and_o yet_o in_o the_o end_n have_v sing_v the_o song_n of_o joyful_a deliverance_n it_o may_v be_v some_o of_o god_n child_n bear_v the_o cross_n to_o their_o die_a day_n yet_o the_o lord_n sustain_v they_o in_o it_o by_o his_o grace_n and_o in_o the_o end_n show_v they_o mercy_n and_o peace_n second_o in_o this_o departure_n of_o satan_n from_o christ_n we_o may_v observe_v a_o notable_a difference_n between_o the_o first_o adam_n and_o the_o second_o the_o first_o adam_n be_v tempt_v and_o overcome_v therein_o satan_n prevail_v in_o that_o conflict_n and_o bring_v he_o captive_a into_o his_o kingdom_n have_v spiritual_o take_v possession_n of_o he_o the_o second_o adam_n be_v tempt_v also_o but_o the_o devil_n can_v find_v no_o mean_n whereby_o to_o prevail_v with_o he_o the_o prince_n of_o this_o world_n come_v but_o have_v nought_o in_o i_o say_v christ_n john_n 14._o 30._o but_o after_o his_o assault_n be_v fain_o to_o fly_v away_o further_o in_o this_o departure_n of_o christ_n note_v two_o circumstance_n when_o satan_n depart_v and_o for_o how_o long_o a_o time_n first_o when_o he_o depart_v be_v note_v in_o this_o word_n then_o that_o be_v after_o the_o three_o temptation_n when_o christ_n in_o indignation_n for_o his_o blasphemy_n against_o god_n have_v say_v avoid_v satan_n and_o withal_o have_v answer_v his_o temptation_n out_o of_o the_o write_a word_n than_o he_o depart_v hence_o we_o learn_v first_o that_o the_o best_a way_n to_o vanquish_v satain_a be_v to_o give_v he_o no_o ground_n ground_n but_o to_o withstand_v he_o manful_o at_o the_o first_o jam._n 4._o 7._o resist_v the_o devil_n and_o he_o will_v fly_v now_o satan_n be_v resist_v when_o from_o our_o heart_n we_o cast_v our_o soul_n on_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n contain_v in_o his_o word_n and_o in_o the_o whole_a course_n of_o our_o life_n pray_v for_o strength_n of_o grace_n to_o stand_v against_o all_o his_o assault_n whereby_o we_o may_v see_v the_o great_a error_n and_o deceit_n of_o those_o who_o account_n of_o satan_n temptation_n as_o of_o fit_n of_o melancholy_n and_o think_v they_o may_v be_v remove_v by_o music_n merry_a company_n and_o such_o like_a but_o these_o be_v no_o weapon_n to_o drive_v away_o the_o devil_n second_o this_o also_o show_v their_o dangerous_a course_n who_o yield_v to_o satan_n temptation_n for_o a_o time_n take_v their_o pleasure_n in_o their_o youth_n purpose_v to_o resist_v he_o when_o they_o be_v old_a and_o then_o to_o repent_v too_o many_o take_v this_o course_n but_o it_o be_v fearful_a for_o thus_o do_v they_o set_v open_v all_o the_o door_n of_o their_o heart_n to_o the_o devil_n and_o suffer_v he_o to_o take_v quiet_a possession_n little_o consider_v that_o it_o be_v beyond_o their_o power_n to_o dispossess_v he_o at_o their_o pleasure_n for_o indeed_o hereby_o they_o become_v like_a to_o a_o man_n that_o be_v sick_a of_o the_o dropsy_n who_o the_o more_o he_o drink_v the_o more_o he_o desire_v so_o he_o that_o willing_o give_v place_n to_o satan_n temptation_n the_o more_o he_o sin_n the_o more_o he_o may_v for_o the_o long_o he_o be_v tempt_v the_o more_o by_o yield_v be_v he_o weaken_v &_o the_o great_a be_v the_o danger_n of_o his_o endless_a confusion_n therefore_o learn_v of_o christ_n to_o resist_v betimes_o second_o in_o this_o circumstance_n note_v that_o when_o christ_n rebuke_v satan_n and_o bid_v he_o avoid_v he_o depart_v and_o be_v present_o go_v be_v this_o any_o virtue_n in_o satan_n that_o he_o do_v thus_o ready_o depart_v at_o christ_n command_n no_o very_o commendable_a though_o he_o obey_v it_o be_v god_n will_v he_o will_v he_o this_o be_v like_a to_o the_o obedience_n of_o rebel_n who_o be_v attach_v and_o arreign_v for_o their_o treason_n in_o suffer_v be_v make_v to_o obey_v the_o prince_n law_n and_o such_o be_v this_o obedience_n of_o satan_n force_v upon_o he_o by_o the_o powerful_a command_n of_o christ_n who_o be_v prince_n and_o lord_n of_o all_o creature_n and_o this_o be_v to_o be_v mark_v that_o when_o christ_n give_v forth_o his_o powerful_a command_n than_o satan_n must_v obey_v whether_o he_o will_v or_o not_o this_o be_v evident_a by_o his_o manifold_a dispossession_n of_o unclean_a spirit_n who_o come_v forth_o at_o his_o command_n though_o they_o account_v he_o as_o their_o tormenter_n now_o that_o which_o here_o befall_v the_o devil_n shall_v one_o day_n be_v verify_v of_o all_o wicked_a man_n if_o they_o will_v not_o now_o obey_v god_n willing_o while_o in_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n he_o bid_v they_o repent_v and_o believe_v the_o gospel_n they_o shall_v one_o day_n be_v compel_v even_o at_o the_o dreadful_a day_n of_o judgement_n will_v they_o will_v they_o to_o obey_v that_o woeful_a voice_n of_o christ_n depart_v from_o i_o you_o be_v signify_v that_o look_v what_o knowledge_n craft_n or_o power_n the_o devil_n have_v that_o do_v he_o employ_v to_o the_o uttermost_a in_o these_o temptation_n before_o he_o leave_v our_o keep_v all_o god_n child_n despair_n from_o despair_n in_o the_o great_a extremity_n of_o their_o temptation_n even_o when_o they_o shall_v feel_v their_o conscience_n as_o it_o be_v set_v on_o a_o iron_n rack_n and_o the_o slashing_n of_o hell_n fire_n already_o kindle_v in_o their_o soul_n for_o christ_n
so_o that_o they_o want_v this_o bless_a assurance_n and_o therefore_o with_o the_o apostle_n paul_n we_o must_v account_v all_o other_o thing_n to_o be_v but_o dross_n and_o dung_n in_o respect_n of_o this_o excellent_a knowledge_n of_o christ_n 8._o to_o be_v our_o saviour_n and_o redeemer_n true_a it_o be_v that_o unto_o many_o this_o exhortation_n will_v seem_v needless_a for_o ignorant_a person_n that_o have_v nothing_o in_o they_o but_o mere_a presumption_n will_v brag_v most_o of_o this_o persuasion_n but_o they_o that_o have_v feel_v the_o smart_n of_o temptation_n do_v know_v what_o it_o be_v that_o will_v stand_v we_o in_o stead_n even_o that_o assurance_n only_o which_o be_v right_o found_v upon_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o forsake_v the_o vain_a conceit_n of_o our_o ignorance_n let_v we_o with_o all_o diligence_n unfeigned_o endeavour_n to_o get_v this_o resolution_n if_o we_o can_v of_o ourselves_o attain_v unto_o it_o we_o must_v use_v the_o direction_n and_o help_n of_o god_n faithful_a minister_n for_o howsoever_o it_o please_v some_o to_o think_v otherwise_o yet_o this_o be_v the_o undoubted_a truth_n of_o god_n that_o a_o man_n in_o this_o life_n may_v ordinary_o be_v resolve_v and_o assure_v of_o his_o salvation_n the_o second_o thing_n which_o the_o devil_n aim_v at_o in_o this_o temptation_n unbelief_n be_v to_o bring_v christ_n to_o a_o practice_n of_o unbelief_n namely_o in_o want_n of_o bread_n to_o turn_v stone_n into_o bread_n for_o the_o present_a satisfy_n of_o his_o hunger_n for_o the_o devil_n will_v needs_o persuade_v our_o saviour_n christ_n that_o he_o must_v have_v bread_n to_o save_v his_o life_n and_o therefore_o in_o the_o want_n of_o bread_n will_v have_v bring_v he_o to_o this_o distrustful_a course_n to_o turn_v stone_n into_o bread_n and_o as_o the_o devil_n here_o deal_v with_o christ_n so_o he_o assay_v to_o do_v with_o all_o his_o member_n as_o he_o labour_v to_o work_v unbelief_n in_o their_o heart_n so_o he_o seek_v to_o bring_v they_o to_o the_o practice_n of_o unbelief_n in_o their_o life_n see_v the_o truth_n hereof_o in_o the_o course_n of_o the_o world_n be_v a_o man_n oppress_v with_o outward_a want_n and_o poverty_n the_o devil_n will_v tell_v he_o he_o must_v needs_o live_v and_o therefore_o will_v persuade_v he_o to_o rob_v and_o steal_v and_o to_o filch_v for_o his_o live_n if_o a_o man_n be_v sick_a and_o want_v present_a help_n in_o lawful_a mean_n or_o else_o be_v afflict_v somewhat_o extraordinary_o then_o will_v the_o devil_n move_v he_o to_o seek_v to_o wizard_n and_o witch_n suggest_v this_o into_o he_o by_o one_o mean_n or_o other_o that_o they_o can_v do_v more_o good_a in_o such_o a_o case_n then_o all_o the_o physician_n in_o the_o world_n this_o be_v a_o most_o vile_a practice_v of_o unbelief_n and_o yet_o too_o common_a in_o the_o world_n wherein_o man_n for_o the_o remoovall_a of_o some_o outward_a evil_n will_v not_o stick_v to_o hazard_v the_o loss_n of_o their_o soul_n we_o therefore_o must_v labour_v to_o be_v acquaint_v with_o these_o wile_n of_o satan_n and_o by_o the_o practice_n of_o faith_n in_o our_o life_n labour_v to_o express_v the_o power_n of_o faith_n in_o our_o heart_n as_o in_o all_o manner_n of_o godly_a conversation_n so_o especial_o in_o use_v only_o lawful_a mean_n for_o our_o relief_n in_o the_o time_n of_o misery_n and_o distress_n but_o to_o come_v more_o particular_o to_o the_o word_n of_o this_o temptation_n if_o thou_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n command_v these_o stone_n etc._n etc._n it_o may_v be_v demand_v why_o the_o devil_n shall_v make_v choice_n of_o this_o question_n wherewith_o to_o tempt_v our_o saviour_n christ_n rather_o than_o any_o other_o answer_n the_o reason_n hereof_o may_v be_v these_o first_o he_o know_v well_o that_o if_o christ_n be_v the_o true_a and_o proper_a son_n of_o god_n than_o he_o must_v needs_o be_v the_o true_a messiah_n and_o if_o he_o false_a teacher_n for_o as_o well_o in_o the_o primitive_a church_n as_o also_o since_o that_o time_n there_o have_v be_v sundry_a man_n of_o great_a same_o for_o wisdom_n and_o learning_n as_o ebion_n cerinthus_n carpoorates_n samosatenus_fw-la and_o arrius_n who_o have_v all_o labour_v several_o to_o prove_v that_o jesus_n christ_n the_o son_n of_o marie_n be_v not_o indeed_o the_o son_n of_o god_n very_a god_n but_o only_o a_o worthy_a prophet_n now_o of_o they_o we_o may_v safe_o think_v with_o the_o church_n of_o god_n in_o former_a time_n that_o they_o be_v false_a prophet_n heretic_n and_o seducer_n yea_o the_o profess_a enemy_n of_o christ_n guide_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o satan_n for_o herein_o they_o do_v direct_o tread_v in_o his_o step_n ii_o in_o this_o his_o practice_n we_o may_v observe_v the_o malicious_a and_o contradict_a spirit_n of_o satan_n against_o god_n himself_o for_o here_o he_o labour_v to_o conclude_v that_o christ_n be_v not_o the_o son_n of_o god_n notwithstanding_o god_n himself_o have_v a_o little_a before_o avouch_v that_o he_o be_v and_o this_o be_v his_o continue_a practice_n unto_o this_o day_n for_o where_o god_n in_o his_o church_n pronounce_v grace_n mercy_n and_o love_n there_o on_o the_o contrary_n will_v the_o devil_n pronounce_v a_o curse_n hatred_n and_o damnation_n again_o where_o god_n denounce_v his_o curse_n and_o judgement_n there_o will_v the_o devil_n seek_v to_o persuade_v a_o conceit_n of_o grace_n and_o favour_n if_o a_o man_n be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n and_o have_v receive_v the_o seal_n of_o grace_n for_o his_o assurance_n thereof_o the_o devil_n will_v seek_v to_o weaken_v this_o assurance_n and_o persuade_v he_o if_o he_o can_v that_o he_o be_v the_o child_n of_o wrath_n and_o if_o a_o man_n be_v void_a of_o grace_n and_o so_o indeed_o the_o child_n of_o the_o devil_n then_o will_v satan_n suggest_v into_o his_o heart_n presumptuous_a thought_n and_o make_v he_o think_v he_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n so_o that_o every_o way_n he_o show_v himself_o contrary_a to_o god_n yet_o mark_v the_o devil_n word_n a_o little_a further_o tempt_v if_o thou_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n that_o the_o true_a god_n can_v without_o pain_n or_o labour_n yea_o without_o all_o mean_n at_o his_o very_a beck_n do_v whatsoever_o he_o will_v and_o by_o his_o word_n only_o make_v stone_n become_v bread_n three_o that_o to_o work_v a_o miracle_n of_o himself_o be_v a_o property_n and_o prerogative_n of_o he_o alone_o that_o be_v true_a god_n as_o to_o turn_v stone_n into_o bread_n in_o
