find_v any_o law_n grievous_a or_o burdensome_a to_o the_o kingdom_n they_o may_v alter_v it_o or_o take_v it_o away_o and_o add_v a_o new_a law_n in_o the_o room_n of_o it_o but_o this_o the_o church_n of_o god_n can_v do_v the_o law_n that_o the_o church_n have_v now_o it_o must_v have_v to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n god_n himself_o give_v the_o law_n to_o his_o church_n and_o he_o can_v give_v a_o prejudicial_a or_o burdensome_a law_n whereas_o ruler_n of_o commonwealth_n they_o be_v but_o man_n and_o can_v look_v into_o the_o event_n of_o thing_n and_o therefore_o be_v ignorant_a whether_o this_o or_o that_o law_n may_v be_v good_a or_o no_o and_o therefore_o do_v change_v they_o at_o their_o pleasure_n when_o they_o see_v a_o necessity_n but_o the_o rule_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v a_o unerring_a and_o unalterable_a rule_n which_o all_o must_v follow_v and_o practice_v to_o the_o end_n of_o the_o world_n 5._o they_o differ_v in_o their_o censure_n the_o censure_n of_o a_o commonwealth_n may_v extend_v so_o far_o as_o to_o confiscation_n of_o good_n to_o banishment_n imprisonment_n or_o death_n but_o the_o censure_n of_o the_o church_n extend_v only_o to_o excommunication_n or_o throw_v the_o offender_n out_o of_o their_o society_n or_o fellowship_n they_o can_v do_v no_o more_o and_o must_v do_v no_o more_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n can_v inflict_v no_o censure_n but_o only_o to_o excommunicate_v and_o therefore_o their_o practice_n that_o do_v imprison_v and_o censure_v and_o inflict_v punishment_n upon_o their_o people_n be_v not_o warrantable_a but_o do_v contradict_v the_o rule_n of_o the_o word_n and_o those_o likewise_o that_o do_v cry_v out_o against_o church_n government_n as_o tyrannical_a do_v very_o much_o mistake_v for_o the_o church_n of_o god_n their_o censure_n be_v not_o corporeal_a but_o spiritual_a but_o though_o the_o church_n may_v not_o censure_v any_o man_n that_o be_v a_o offender_n yet_o she_o may_v complain_v to_o the_o commonwealth_n and_o they_o may_v restrain_v and_o quell_v they_o and_o keep_v they_o under_o and_o inflict_v punishment_n upon_o they_o thus_o than_o you_o see_v both_o wherein_o a_o church_n and_o a_o commonwealth_n do_v agree_v and_o wherein_o they_o difler_n and_o if_o this_o be_v so_o that_o the_o church_n of_o god_n be_v a_o spiritual_a commonwealth_n then_o give_v i_o leave_v to_o draw_v these_o three_o inference_n from_o hence_o use_v 1_o 1._o i_o may_v infer_v from_o hence_o the_o necessity_n of_o church_n government_n in_o a_o church_n do_v you_o ever_o see_v a_o commonwealth_n stand_v and_o flourish_v without_o rule_n and_o law_n and_o order_n order_n be_v the_o staff_n of_o a_o commonwealth_n if_o every_o man_n may_v do_v what_o he_o list_v and_o what_o be_v right_a in_o his_o own_o eye_n nothing_o but_o ruin_n and_o destruction_n will_v present_o follow_v as_o in_o psal_n 11._o 3._o if_o the_o 3._o foundation_n be_v destroy_v what_o shall_v the_o righteous_a do_v if_o the_o law_n and_o foundation_n of_o a_o commonwealth_n be_v subvert_v and_o destroy_v there_o will_v be_v nothing_o but_o ruin_n if_o the_o church_n be_v a_o spiritual_a commonwealth_n than_o there_o be_v a_o absolute_a necessity_n of_o a_o government_n in_o it_o &_o therefore_o those_o that_o will_v either_o rob_v the_o church_n of_o their_o government_n and_o will_v have_v none_o at_o all_o or_o else_o will_v introduce_v a_o false_a government_n upon_o the_o church_n and_o do_v as_o much_o as_o in_o they_o lie_v to_o overthrow_v the_o government_n of_o the_o church_n such_o as_o these_o be_v to_o be_v reprove_v government_n to_o a_o commonwealth_n be_v like_o a_o hedge_n to_o a_o garden_n now_o suppose_v you_o have_v a_o very_a fair_a garden_n and_o a_o great_a many_o curious_a flower_n and_o fine_a slip_n in_o it_o and_o one_o shall_v come_v to_o you_o and_o tell_v you_o sir_n i_o see_v many_o dainty_a flower_n and_o slip_n in_o your_o garden_n but_o i_o see_v none_o to_o grow_v upon_o your_o hedge_n therefore_o pull_v it_o down_o let_v it_o grow_v there_o no_o long_o you_o will_v say_v to_o such_o a_o man_n no_o by_o no_o mean_n for_o though_o nothing_o grow_v upon_o the_o hedge_n yet_o

the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o that_o blessing_n and_o therefore_o as_o i_o tell_v you_o before_o in_o that_o very_a chapter_n where_o god_n promise_v the_o blessing_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n he_o promise_v the_o blessing_n of_o this_o life_n too_o as_o a_o entail_v to_o the_o covenant_n wicked_a man_n may_v have_v blessing_n but_o not_o by_o virtue_n of_o a_o promise_n not_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n but_o now_o if_o you_o ask_v i_o how_o you_o may_v know_v whether_o the_o blessing_n you_o enjoy_v come_v unto_o you_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o when_o he_o will_v not_o accept_v of_o the_o costly_a sacrifice_n from_o the_o wicked_a oh_o what_o a_o happy_a condition_n be_v thou_o in_o that_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n wicked_a man_n may_v hear_v more_o sermon_n and_o perform_v more_o duty_n and_o say_v more_o prayer_n to_o god_n then_o you_o and_o yet_o in_o all_o their_o duty_n be_v reject_v when_o thou_o be_v accept_v 3._o take_v this_o for_o your_o comfort_n that_o when_o ever_o you_o offend_v god_n and_o provoke_v he_o to_o anger_n you_o have_v a_o mediator_n to_o stand_v between_o god_n and_o you_o though_o you_o be_v guilty_a yet_o you_o have_v a_o advocate_n to_o plead_v your_o cause_n for_o you_o you_o that_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n you_o may_v say_v to_o christ_n your_o mediator_n as_o the_o israelite_n say_v to_o moses_n when_o they_o have_v offend_v god_n go_v thou_o and_o speak_v unto_o god_n for_o we_o so_o may_v you_o say_v when_o you_o have_v nothing_o but_o thunder_v and_o lightning_n and_o tempest_n in_o your_o soul_n and_o the_o flashing_n of_o hell_n fire_n in_o your_o conscience_n than_o you_o may_v say_v to_o christ_n go_v now_o to_o god_n and_o speak_v for_o under_o a_o spiritual_a delusion_n and_o think_v himself_o under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n when_o he_o be_v a_o stranger_n to_o it_o lest_o the_o dog_n shall_v snatch_v at_o the_o child_n meat_n i_o shall_v lay_v down_o to_o you_o some_o distinguish_a character_n whereby_o you_o may_v know_v whether_o you_o be_v under_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n or_o no_o and_o before_o i_o make_v entrance_n upon_o this_o i_o will_v only_o premise_v four_o sad_a and_o dismal_a conclusion_n which_o will_v make_v way_n the_o better_a for_o what_o i_o have_v to_o handle_v in_o the_o examination_n spiritual_a privilege_n of_o it_o as_o pardon_v of_o sin_n have_v god_n to_o be_v your_o god_n and_o christ_n to_o be_v your_o saviour_n etc._n etc._n as_o in_o deut._n 29._o 10_o 11_o 12._o 12._o say_v moses_n there_o you_o stand_v this_o day_n all_o of_o you_o before_o the_o lord_n your_o god_n your_o captain_n of_o tribe_n your_o elder_n and_o your_o officer_n with_o all_o the_o man_n of_o israel_n your_o little_a one_o your_o wife_n and_o the_o strange_a that_o be_v in_o thy_o camp_n from_o the_o hewer_n of_o thy_o wood_n unto_o the_o drawer_n of_o thy_o water_n that_o thou_o shall_v peace_n of_o conscience_n joy_n in_o believe_v god_n to_o be_v their_o god_n and_o christ_n to_o be_v their_o saviour_n and_o so_o in_o rom._n 9_o 4_o 5._o say_v the_o 5._o apostle_n they_o be_v the_o israelite_n to_o who_o pertain_v the_o adoption_n and_o the_o glory_n and_o the_o covenant_n and_o the_o give_v of_o the_o law_n and_o the_o service_n of_o god_n and_o the_o promise_n of_o who_o be_v the_o father_n and_o of_o who_o as_o concern_v the_o flesh_n christ_n come_v these_o be_v very_o great_a privilege_n and_o yet_o say_v the_o text_n in_o vers_fw-la 8._o these_o be_v 8._o not_o all_o there_o be_v no_o difficulty_n in_o obtain_v this_o grace_n thou_o never_o yet_o have_v it_o for_o the_o least_o grace_n be_v beyond_o the_o power_n and_o capacity_n of_o any_o man_n to_o get_v of_o himself_o thou_o that_o think_v it_o a_o easy_a matter_n to_o hope_v for_o heaven_n thou_o never_o yet_o have_v a_o true_a hope_n for_o it_o must_v be_v god_n that_o must_v work_v this_o grace_n in_o we_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v in_o rom._n 15._o 13._o 13._o now_o the_o god_n of_o hope_n fill_v you_o with_o all_o peace_n and_o joy_n in_o believe_v 2._o those_o that_o think_v there_o be_v no_o efficacy_n in_o keep_v this_o grace_n of_o hope_n those_o have_v no_o true_a hope_n for_o wheresoever_o true_a hope_n be_v it_o have_v these_o property_n with_o it_o 1._o it_o have_v a_o purify_n virtue_n with_o it_o as_o in_o 1._o joh._n 3._o 3_o every_o man_n that_o have_v this_o hope_n in_o he_o purify_v himself_o even_o as_o god_n be_v pure_a 2._o hope_n have_v a_o pacify_v property_n with_o it_o it_o be_v the_o anchor_n of_o the_o soul_n both_o sure_a and_o 19_o steadfast_a though_o the_o world_n and_o the_o devil_n trouble_n and_o disquiet_v you_o and_o affliction_n and_o temptation_n molest_v and_o disturb_v you_o yet_o this_o grace_n of_o hope_n will_v quiet_v and_o pacify_v you_o those_o that_o hope_v in_o god_n shall_v be_v secure_a and_o at_o rest_n 3._o hope_v it_o have_v a_o painful_a property_n with_o it_o it_o be_v never_o a_o sluggard_n where_o there_o be_v a_o impossibility_n there_o hope_n be_v cut_v off_o but_o that_o which_o a_o man_n hope_n for_o he_o will_v labour_v and_o endeavour_v after_o as_o he_o that_o plough_v do_v plough_v in_o hope_n so_o the_o hope_n of_o heaven_n will_v make_v you_o plough_v up_o the_o fallow_a ground_n of_o your_o heart_n and_o make_v you_o indefatigable_a in_o your_o labour_n after_o heaven_n so_o that_o you_o shall_v take_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o pain_n and_o use_v all_o your_o endeavour_n for_o it_o sermon_n xii_o ephes._n 2._o 12._o have_v no_o hope_n we_o come_v now_o to_o the_o three_o question_n which_o be_v this_o que._n 3._o what_o be_v the_o reason_n see_v the_o scripture_n say_v that_o a_o wicked_a man_n have_v no_o hope_n that_o of_o all_o the_o man_n in_o the_o world_n wicked_a man_n do_v nourish_v great_a hope_n for_o heaven_n in_o their_o heart_n answ_n in_o resolve_v this_o question_n i_o shall_v answ_n lay_v you_o down_o five_o false_a pillar_n or_o prop_n hope_n that_o do_v bear_v up_o and_o nourish_v the_o hope_n of_o wicked_a man_n and_o as_o i_o name_v they_o to_o you_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o the_o rottenness_n and_o deceitfulness_n and_o insufficiency_n of_o they_o for_o any_o man_n to_o build_v hope_n of_o heaven_n upon_o 1._o the_o first_o prop_n that_o wicked_a man_n do_v build_v hope_n of_o heaven_n upon_o be_v this_o because_o they_o have_v commit_v but_o small_a sin_n in_o their_o life_n time_n and_o because_o they_o have_v not_o run_v out_o into_o the_o commission_n of_o such_o gross_a and_o scandalous_a sin_n in_o the_o world_n as_o other_o man_n have_v therefore_o say_v they_o sure_o we_o have_v some_o ground_n to_o hope_v for_o heaven_n it_o be_v true_a we_o be_v sinner_n but_o my_o sin_n be_v but_o ordinary_a small_a sin_n and_o frailty_n they_o be_v not_o sin_n of_o a_o double_a die_n just_a as_o the_o pharisee_fw-mi say_v lord_n i_o thank_v thou_o that_o i_o be_o 11._o not_o as_o other_o man_n be_v extortioner_n unjust_a adulterer_n or_o even_o as_o this_o publican_n because_o he_o be_v not_o as_o bad_a as_o other_o plead_v exemption_n and_o freedom_n from_o great_a sin_n to_o be_v a_o prop_n to_o build_v hope_n for_o heaven_n upon_o know_v thus_o much_o that_o small_a sin_n be_v more_o capable_a of_o great_a aggravation_n then_o great_a sin_n be_v as_o i_o shall_v show_v you_o in_o these_o 3._o particular_n wherein_o small_a sin_n do_v admit_v of_o great_a aggravation_n then_o great_a sin_n 1._o small_a obvious_a to_o the_o eye_n of_o all_o man_n that_o you_o can_v find_v opportunity_n to_o commit_v they_o so_o often_o whereas_o small_a sin_n you_o commit_v again_o and_o again_o and_o one_o day_n after_o another_o and_o a_o thousand_o time_n in_o one_o day_n and_o yet_o never_o take_v notice_n of_o they_o and_o therefore_o this_o may_v convince_v you_o that_o your_o exemption_n from_o great_a sin_n can_v be_v no_o sufficient_a ground_n to_o build_v your_o hope_n for_o heaven_n upon_o 4._o you_o that_o build_v your_o hope_n for_o heaven_n upon_o this_o ground_n because_o your_o sin_n be_v none_o of_o the_o great_a let_v i_o tell_v you_o that_o the_o small_a sin_n that_o ever_o you_o commit_v in_o all_o your_o life_n time_n without_o repentance_n on_o thy_o part_n and_o satisfaction_n one_o of_o you_o but_o do_v very_o well_o know_v that_o wine_n and_o strong_a beer_n and_o the_o like_a will_v intoxicate_a you_o and_o yet_o you_o will_v not_o refrain_v from_o excess_n in_o drink_v there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o difference_n between_o you_o and_o noah_n 2._o noah_n be_v drink_v but_o he_o do_v not_o proclaim_v his_o drunkenness_n but_o the_o text_n say_v he_o go_v into_o his_o tent_n and_o sleep_v he_o be_v ashamed_a 9_o of_o what_o he_o have_v do_v but_o now_o you_o proclaim_v your_o sin_n and_o swear_v and_o stare_v and_o commit_v many_o other_o sin_n in_o your_o drunkenness_n 3._o it_o be_v true_a noah_n be_v drink_v but_o you_o never_o read_v that_o he_o be_v drink_v any_o more_o than_o once_o but_o you_o be_v drink_v again_o and_o again_o one_o day_n
