from_o attempt_v it_o and_o some_o have_v conclude_v it_o as_o a_o impossible_a thing_n to_o attain_v unto_o a_o perfect_a silence_n from_o all_o our_o own_o thought_n see_v it_o be_v as_o natural_a to_o the_o mind_n to_o think_v as_o it_o be_v for_o the_o fire_n to_o burn_v or_o the_o light_n to_o shine_v answ._n to_o the_o last_o part_n of_o this_o objection_n i_o answer_v that_o by_o a_o perfect_a silence_n from_o all_o our_o own_o thought_n do_v not_o understand_v that_o the_o soul_n be_v to_o be_v without_o all_o sense_n or_o remembrance_n or_o thought_n of_o all_o kind_n for_o i_o distinguish_v of_o thought_n thus_o there_o be_v thought_n which_o be_v bring_v forth_o in_o we_o without_o any_o divine_a or_o supernatural_a concurrence_n motion_n and_o assistance_n of_o the_o such_o divine_a thought_n or_o shut_v they_o out_o but_o on_o the_o contrary_a we_o exhort_v all_o to_o entertain_v they_o and_o abound_v in_o they_o as_o much_o as_o possible_a in_o order_n to_o great_a help_n and_o furtherance_n to_o attain_v unto_o it_o and_o let_v none_o strain_v or_o use_v any_o violence_n or_o force_n to_o nature_n to_o compass_v it_o for_o no_o mâ—n_z of_o himself_o can_v attain_v unto_o it_o but_o as_o he_o be_v assist_v and_o enable_v of_o the_o lord_n who_o be_v near_o at_o

of_o the_o inward_a trial_n and_o trouble_n it_o usual_o meet_v with_o therein_o now_o after_o the_o soul_n have_v get_v itself_o convert_v or_o turn_v inward_o by_o the_o divine_a influence_n and_o assistance_n unto_o the_o divine_a seed_n and_o to_o god_n and_o christ_n present_v therein_o than_o it_o be_v to_o be_v careful_a that_o it_o persist_v and_o continue_v in_o its_o conversion_n and_o the_o lord_n who_o by_o his_o divine_a grace_n have_v enable_v it_o to_o convert_v after_o the_o former_a manner_n do_v and_o will_v also_o enable_v it_o to_o persevere_v therein_o for_o it_o be_v in_o the_o soul_n be_v persist_v and_o continue_v in_o its_o conversion_n and_o application_n unto_o the_o divine_a word_n light_n and_o life_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n that_o it_o come_v to_o receive_v and_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o bless_a effect_n thereof_o a_o outward_a example_n whereof_o we_o have_v very_o plain_a in_o our_o hold_v any_o thing_n to_o the_o fire_n which_o if_o sudden_o we_o remove_v again_o it_o scarce_o produce_v any_o effect_n in_o it_o as_o if_o we_o will_v purify_v or_o refine_v any_o metal_n from_o its_o dross_n by_o the_o fire_n we_o must_v not_o only_o apply_v it_o intimate_o to_o the_o fire_n but_o hold_v it_o in_o it_o a_o good_a time_n that_o it_o may_v melt_v and_o the_o dross_n may_v separate_v from_o it_o so_o thou_o must_v not_o only_o turn_v thy_o soul_n to_o this_o fire_n of_o god_n in_o thou_o but_o must_v persist_v and_o continue_v in_o so_o do_v and_o by_o that_o mean_v thou_o will_v quick_o begin_v to_o be_v a_o partaker_n of_o its_o bless_a effect_n some_o of_o which_o effect_n as_o they_o follow_v at_o first_o upon_o the_o soul_n be_v convert_v unto_o this_o divine_a principle_n i_o find_v it_o with_o i_o to_o mention_v as_o first_o thou_o will_v by_o thy_o conversion_n thereunto_o receive_v a_o more_o clear_a and_o full_a convincement_n and_o discovery_n of_o thy_o sin_n and_o sinful_a pollute_a nature_n then_o former_o so_o that_o thou_o will_v come_v to_o see_v sin_n to_o be_v exceed_o sinful_a and_o how_o thou_o be_v compass_v about_o with_o it_o as_o with_o a_o thick_a cloud_n which_o hinder_v thou_o from_o enjoy_v the_o sweet_a and_o comfortable_a presence_n of_o god_n yea_o thou_o will_v come_v to_o feel_v thy_o poor_a soul_n embody_a or_o incorporate_v in_o a_o very_a body_n of_o sin_n issue_v forth_o from_o it_o and_o will_v enter_v into_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n kill_v and_o burn_v so_o far_o as_o it_o enter_v vi_o by_o the_o operation_n of_o this_o heavenly_a fire_n thou_o will_v find_v a_o very_a sensible_a and_o grievous_a pain_n in_o thy_o inward_a man_n as_o very_o as_o if_o the_o outward_a fire_n be_v burn_v in_o thy_o outward_a body_n so_o thou_o may_v conceive_v how_o thou_o will_v be_v affect_v if_o the_o tender_a and_o most_o sensible_a part_n of_o thy_o outward_a body_n be_v hold_v close_o unto_o a_o burn_a flame_n even_o such_o sensible_a and_o grievous_a pain_n will_v thou_o find_v inward_o for_o indeed_o thy_o soul_n dwell_v as_o real_o in_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n and_o be_v unite_v with_o it_o as_o it_o do_v in_o the_o outward_a body_n therefore_o it_o be_v sensible_a of_o whatever_o hurt_v it_o and_o findeth_z pain_n till_o it_o have_v put_v it_o off_o and_o then_o it_o have_v no_o more_o sympathy_n with_o it_o vii_o great_a fear_n and_o time_n become_v a_o partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a and_o divine_a life_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o in_o some_o measure_n through_o some_o beginning_n of_o a_o spiritual_a death_n and_o regeneration_n by_o which_o it_o attain_v unto_o some_o measure_n of_o union_n with_o god_n and_o christ_n and_o thereby_o be_v put_v in_o some_o capacity_n for_o operative_a exercise_n of_o with_o the_o soul_n in_o natural_a action_n unless_o it_o be_v a_o partaker_n of_o the_o soul_n life_n and_o be_v in_o union_n with_o it_o so_o nor_o can_v the_o soul_n cooperate_v with_o god_n in_o spiritual_a and_o holy_a action_n till_o it_o be_v a_o partaker_n of_o his_o life_n and_o attain_v unto_o some_o union_n with_o he_o now_o i_o have_v show_v above_o that_o the_o soul_n through_o its_o convert_n unto_o god_n and_o continuance_n therein_o in_o passiveness_n and_o forbearance_n as_o aforesaid_a be_v it_o but_o for_o a_o very_a small_a time_n become_v a_o partaker_n of_o some_o spiritual_a power_n though_o they_o be_v in_o thou_o in_o thy_o own_o will_n therefore_o thou_o be_v to_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n that_o he_o may_v give_v thou_o the_o use_n of_o they_o by_o the_o new_a and_o actual_a influence_n of_o his_o spirit_n upon_o they_o which_o be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o key_n which_o open_v they_o otherwise_o they_o be_v shut_v up_o and_o lock_v ix_o and_o last_o watch_v against_o the_o enemy_n who_o lie_v near_o thou_o in_o all_o thy_o work_n one_o way_n or_o other_o to_o mar_v they_o for_o indeed_o so_o long_o as_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n live_v in_o thou_o in_o any_o measure_n so_o far_o have_v satan_n a_o place_n in_o thou_o for_o this_o body_n with_o its_o member_n and_o power_n of_o its_o unholy_a life_n be_v the_o very_a kingdom_n and_o throne_n of_o satan_n in_o which_o he_o live_v and_o rule_n after_o a_o sort_n as_o the_o lord_n do_v in_o his_o kingdom_n which_o be_v the_o heavenly_a body_n and_o birth_n with_o the_o member_n and_o power_n to_o concur_v and_o cooperate_v with_o he_o so_o the_o enemy_n work_v strong_o in_o opposition_n to_o the_o lord_n and_o also_o move_v the_o soul_n with_o its_o power_n to_o concur_v and_o cooperat_a with_o he_o and_o thus_o the_o poor_a soul_n be_v set_v as_o betwixt_o two_o contrary_a stream_n the_o one_o seek_v to_o carry_v it_o one_o way_n and_o the_o other_o to_o carry_v it_o to_o the_o contrary_a and_o on_o this_o account_v it_o be_v that_o the_o soul_n sometime_o obey_v the_o one_o and_o sometime_o the_o other_o sometime_o it_o be_v carry_v forward_o and_o sometime_o backward_o yea_o and_o sometime_o it_o do_v the_o lord_n work_n and_o sometime_o the_o work_n of_o the_o enemy_n and_o at_o other_o time_n the_o work_n which_o it_o do_v be_v so_o to_o speak_v mix_v or_o stand_v in_o a_o mixture_n so_o that_o one_o part_n of_o its_o work_n may_v be_v of_o and_o in_o the_o lord_n and_o do_v in_o his_o power_n and_o spirit_n and_o
but_o the_o more_o abundant_a fruit_n it_o bring_v forth_o this_o month_n or_o year_n the_o yet_o more_o abundant_o it_o bring_v forth_o the_o next_o yea_o its_o life_n be_v so_o much_o in_o work_v and_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n that_o if_o it_o be_v hinder_v in_o its_o moving_n and_o work_n it_o die_v even_o as_o the_o fire_n go_v out_o if_o it_o be_v stop_v from_o burn_a and_o the_o water_n die_v if_o it_o be_v keep_v from_o run_v beside_o the_o lord_n be_v so_o well_o please_v in_o the_o soul_n that_o be_v diligent_a in_o good_a work_n through_o his_o own_o holy_a life_n and_o spirit_n that_o he_o do_v reward_v it_o with_o a_o further_a measure_n and_o take_v delight_n to_o water_v the_o soul_n that_o be_v fruitful_a therein_o the_o more_o abundant_o with_o his_o heavenly_a virtue_n and_o spirit_n even_o as_o the_o husbandman_n do_v his_o garden_n which_o yield_v he_o good_a fruit_n but_o the_o vine-yard_n which_o bring_v not_o forth_o good_a grape_n but_o the_o sour_a and_o bitter_a grape_n of_o evil_a work_n see_v what_o he_o do_v to_o it_o isa._n 5._o i_o will_v lay_v it_o waste_v say_v the_o lord_n it_o shall_v not_o be_v prune_v nor_o dig_v etc._n etc._n i_o will_v also_o command_v the_o cloud_n that_o they_o rain_v no_o rain_n upon_o it_o but_o it_o may_v be_v say_v be_v not_o faith_n a_o work_n and_o be_v not_o believe_v work_v and_o yet_o thou_o grant_v that_o the_o soul_n come_v to_o attain_v unto_o the_o first_o beginning_n or_o beginning_n of_o a_o holy_a and_o spiritual_a life_n through_o faith_n and_o believe_v unto_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o there_o be_v a_o twofold_a property_n of_o faith_n 1._o receptive_a or_o receive_v 2._o operative_a or_o work_v now_o the_o soul_n do_v not_o attain_v unto_o the_o begin_n of_o a_o holy_a life_n through_o the_o property_n of_o faith_n which_o be_v opperative_a but_o through_o that_o which_o be_v receptive_a and_o lest_o any_o shall_v think_v this_o distinction_n too_o nice_a or_o subtle_a i_o shall_v prove_v it_o from_o the_o express_a word_n of_o scripture_n 1._o that_o faith_n be_v operative_a be_v clear_a from_o that_o scripture_n where_o it_o be_v say_v faith_n work_v by_o love_n and_o where_o it_o be_v say_v to_o purify_v the_o heart_n and_o do_v a_o great_a many_o good_a thing_n in_o many_o other_o place_n 2._o that_o it_o be_v receptive_a i_o shall_v go_v no_o further_o then_o joh._n 1.12_o for_o proof_n to_o as_o many_o as_o receive_v he_o to_o they_o give_v he_o power_n to_o become_v the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o that_o this_o receive_v christ_n be_v a_o believe_v in_o he_o be_v plain_a from_o the_o word_n immediate_o follow_v even_o say_v he_o to_o they_o that_o believe_v in_o his_o name_n so_o here_o be_v the_o receptive_a faith_n for_o receptive_a be_v as_o much_o as_o to_o say_v in_o english_a receive_v nor_o be_v there_o many_o example_n want_v in_o natural_a thing_n to_o show_v that_o a_o thing_n may_v have_v the_o receptive_a power_n when_o as_o yet_o it_o have_v not_o the_o operative_a yea_o that_o the_o receptive_a make_v way_n for_o the_o operative_a as_o to_o instance_n in_o some_o 1._o the_o needle_n of_o the_o compass_n must_v first_o receive_v its_o virtue_n from_o the_o load_n stone_n be_v touch_v with_o it_o before_o it_o can_v direct_v itself_o towards_o the_o pole_n 2._o the_o branch_n that_o be_v cutoff_a from_o its_o own_o natural_a stock_n and_o graft_v into_o another_o it_o first_o receive_v life_n and_o virtue_n from_o the_o stock_n into_o which_o it_o be_v graft_v and_o drink_v it_o in_o before_o it_o proceed_v to_o send_v forth_o either_o leaf_n or_o flourish_n or_o fruit_n 3._o the_o womb_n first_o receive_v seed_n before_o the_o power_n of_o nature_n in_o it_o proceed_v in_o their_o operation_n for_o its_o conception_n and_o formation_n 4._o the_o stomach_n first_o receive_v the_o meat_n into_o it_o before_o by_o the_o power_n of_o nature_n therein_o it_o digest_v and_o turn_v it_o into_o the_o nourishment_n of_o the_o body_n and_o indeed_o this_o last_o example_n do_v with_o great_a clearness_n hold_v forth_o the_o thing_n in_o hand_n for_o suppose_v now_o a_o man_n through_o hunger_n be_v even_o faint_a and_o as_o it_o be_v dead_a so_o that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o do_v nothing_o yet_o receive_v a_o little_a food_n the_o virtue_n of_o it_o do_v sudden_o revive_v he_o and_o give_v he_o natural_a strength_n whereby_o he_o may_v do_v and_o work_v as_o former_o and_o thus_o the_o soul_n receive_v and_o drink_v in_o that_o divine_a virtue_n of_o life_n that_o be_v in_o the_o divine_a seed_n be_v thereby_o quicken_v and_o strengthen_v to_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o pertain_v unto_o a_o holy_a life_n in_o some_o measure_n all_o which_o example_n and_o many_o more_o which_o can_v be_v adduce_v prove_v that_o a_o thing_n may_v have_v a_o receptive_a power_n and_o not_o the_o operative_a yea_o that_o the_o receptive_a make_v way_n for_o the_o operative_a and_o to_o this_o purpose_n these_o word_n of_o christ_n be_v observable_a he_o that_o believe_v in_o i_o say_v he_o though_o he_o be_v dead_a yet_o shall_v he_o live_v which_o import_v that_o a_o soul_n though_o it_o be_v dead_a may_v believe_v that_o be_v to_o say_v receive_v the_o seed_n and_o principle_n of_o life_n into_o it_o for_o this_o divine_a principle_n be_v of_o a_o insinuate_a and_o penetrate_a nature_n it_o do_v make_v way_n for_o its_o own_o reception_n in_o the_o heart_n insinuate_a and_o as_o it_o be_v wind_v itself_o thereinto_o as_o the_o fire_n do_v into_o wood_n or_o any_o combustible_a matter_n but_o now_o when_o this_o principle_n do_v labour_n to_o work_v itself_o into_o the_o soul_n and_o its_o power_n the_o soul_n may_v resist_v and_o do_v so_o many_o time_n whereby_o it_o remain_v dead_a though_o otherwise_o it_o may_v have_v live_v by_o give_v way_n unto_o or_o receive_v this_o divine_a principle_n and_o seed_n and_o thus_o that_o subtle_a objection_n may_v be_v answer_v which_o be_v thus_o believe_v or_o faith_n be_v a_o act_n of_o spiritual_a life_n indwell_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o can_v only_o proceed_v from_o the_o soul_n that_o live_v a_o spiritual_a life_n for_o as_o a_o dead_a body_n can_v walk_v or_o move_v so_o nor_o can_v a_o dead_a soul_n believe_v from_o this_o it_o be_v infer_v that_o the_o soul_n must_v first_o live_v before_o it_o can_v believe_v or_o have_v faith_n and_o consequent_o that_o none_o other_o can_v have_v faith_n but_o they_o who_o be_v already_o partaker_n of_o a_o spiritual_a life_n which_o be_v contrary_a to_o what_o you_o say_v that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o all_o man_n to_o believe_v while_o yet_o you_o grant_v all_o man_n be_v not_o spiritual_o alive_a but_o this_o be_v answer_v by_o the_o former_a distinction_n of_o the_o twofold_a property_n of_o faith_n therefore_o unto_o that_o proposition_n on_o which_o the_o whole_a strength_n of_o the_o objection_n lie_v viz._n that_o faith_n be_v a_o act_n of_o spiritual_a life_n indwell_v in_o the_o soul_n i_o thus_o answer_v that_o the_o operative_a faith_n or_o believe_v be_v a_o act_n of_o spiritual_a life_n indwell_v i_o grant_v but_o as_o for_o the_o receptive_a property_n of_o faith_n through_o it_o the_o soul_n be_v make_v a_o partaker_n of_o the_o spiritual_a life_n by_o which_o it_o come_v to_o indwell_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o therefore_o the_o soul_n can_v be_v conceive_v to_o live_v spiritual_o before_o the_o receptive_a faith_n this_o receptive_a faith_n be_v the_o same_o with_o the_o soul_n be_v convert_v or_o turn_v or_o be_v convert_v or_o turn_v inward_o by_o the_o lord_n unto_o the_o divine_a seed_n and_o principle_n in_o it_o and_o to_o the_o divine_a presence_n of_o god_n and_o christ_n jesus_n therein_o whereof_o i_o have_v say_v somewhat_o chap._n 4._o and_o whether_o the_o soul_n be_v suppose_v only_o to_o be_v passive_a in_o this_o receptive_a faith_n or_o partly_o passive_a and_o partly_o active_a the_o matter_n be_v not_o much_o provide_v it_o be_v acknowledge_v that_o it_o can_v so_o much_o as_o believe_v even_o according_a to_o the_o receptive_a faith_n but_o as_o it_o be_v enable_v and_o assist_v after_o a_o supernatural_a manner_n by_o the_o lord_n also_o some_o may_v object_v this_o doctrine_n seem_v contrary_a to_o what_o you_o seem_v to_o hold_v when_o you_o say_v that_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o all_o man_n to_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o god_n require_v of_o they_o and_o that_o no_o man_n perish_v for_o want_v of_o power_n to_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n answ._n there_o be_v no_o contrariety_n herein_o for_o when_o we_o say_v it_o be_v possible_a for_o all_o man_n to_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o god_n require_v of_o they_o we_o understand_v not_o this_o simple_o and_o absolute_o
suffering_n as_o in_o a_o wine-press_n to_o the_o end_n that_o sweet_a wine_n may_v come_v forth_o that_o have_v the_o virtue_n in_o it_o to_o cure_v man_n of_o their_o wound_n both_o in_o relation_n to_o wrath_n and_o sin_n and_o so_o when_o he_o cry_v forth_o with_o a_o loud_a voice_n upon_o the_o cross_n my_o god_n etc._n etc._n even_o therein_o and_o there_o through_o virtue_n go_v from_o he_o in_o that_o holy_a breath_n or_o spirit_n which_o have_v and_o have_v a_o most_o effectual_a influence_n upon_o both_o man_n and_o the_o creation_n for_o their_o deliverance_n as_o aforesaid_a for_o nothing_o that_o he_o ever_o do_v or_o suffer_v be_v in_o vain_a or_o without_o virtue_n and_o influence_n unto_o man_n salvation_n and_o thus_o have_v declare_v the_o great_a influence_n which_o the_o very_a outward_a come_n birth_n life_n suffering_n and_o death_n etc._n etc._n of_o christ_n have_v upon_o man_n both_o for_o their_o justification_n and_o sanctification_n let_v we_o now_o see_v how_o and_o in_o what_o manner_n we_o shall_v improve_v the_o same_o effectual_o in_o order_n thereunto_o for_o indeed_o we_o shall_v find_v how_o the_o apostle_n do_v great_o improve_v and_o make_v use_n of_o it_o in_o order_n unto_o mortification_n or_o die_v unto_o sin_n and_o live_v unto_o holiness_n and_o make_v progress_n therein_o unto_o perfection_n as_o to_o instance_n in_o some_o few_o example_n rom._n 6.2_o how_o shall_v we_o that_o be_v dead_a to_o sin_n live_v any_o long_a therein_o know_v you_o not_o that_o as_o many_o of_o we_o as_o be_v baptize_v into_o jesus_n christ_n be_v baptise_a into_o his_o death_n etc._n etc._n see_v throughout_o the_o whole_a chapter_n 2_o cor._n 5.14_o for_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n constrain_v we_o because_o we_o thus_o judge_v that_o if_o one_o die_v for_o all_o then_o be_v all_o dead_a and_o that_o he_o die_v for_o all_o that_o they_o which_o live_v shall_v not_o henceforth_o live_v unto_o themselves_o buâ—_n unto_o he_o who_o christ_n for_o the_o mortification_n of_o sin_n and_o live_v unto_o god_n in_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n and_o that_o unto_o perfection_n and_o do_v not_o sooth_n or_o please_v themselves_o to_o live_v in_o much_o sin_n and_o unholiness_n and_o speak_v peace_n to_o themselves_o therein_o because_o of_o what_o christ_n have_v do_v and_o suffer_v for_o they_o and_o now_o i_o shall_v sum_v up_o in_o a_o few_o word_n the_o particular_a use_n and_o benefit_n which_o the_o saint_n receive_v in_o order_n to_o a_o grow_a and_o proceed_v in_o holiness_n through_o the_o improve_n the_o come_v suffering_n death_n and_o resurrection_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o the_o outward_a through_o the_o power_n and_o light_n of_o his_o own_o holy_a spirit_n and_o life_n in_o and_o by_o which_o only_o they_o can_v improve_v they_o aright_o i._o as_o his_o come_v birth_n suffering_n death_n resurrection_n etc._n etc._n be_v present_v and_o set_v before_o we_o in_o the_o evidence_n and_o virtue_n of_o his_o own_o light_n and_o spirit_n in_o our_o heart_n so_o it_o be_v make_v a_o great_a occasion_n to_o strengthen_v both_o our_o faith_n in_o god_n and_o our_o love_n towards_o he_o forasmuch_o as_o our_o lord_n god_n the_o father_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n have_v give_v by_o his_o outward_a come_n etc._n etc._n as_o aforesaid_a a_o very_a great_a and_o large_a testimony_n of_o his_o love_n and_o good_a will_n towards_o all_o man_n for_o their_o salvation_n and_o of_o his_o patience_n and_o long-suffering_a in_o permit_v man_n so_o to_o use_v his_o own_o dear_a son_n which_o be_v as_o if_o it_o have_v be_v unto_o himself_o yea_o herein_o he_o give_v a_o most_o convince_a testimony_n how_o he_o have_v bear_v and_o suffer_v with_o wonderful_a long-suffering_a the_o iniquity_n of_o man_n which_o strike_v against_o his_o inward_a life_n and_o spirit_n of_o his_o son_n in_o all_o age_n and_o generation_n before_o the_o wound_a and_o crucify_a it_o in_o they_o as_o now_o they_o do_v against_o he_o in_o the_o outward_a by_o which_o man_n may_v be_v great_o convince_v that_o the_o will_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v their_o salvation_n in_o so_o bear_v and_o suffer_v they_o for_o have_v he_o not_o intend_v love_n to_o they_o herein_o he_o may_v have_v ease_v himself_o of_o his_o adversary_n in_o a_o moment_n and_o altogether_o deliver_v that_o tender_a life_n and_o spirit_n of_o his_o son_n from_o its_o suffering_n in_o they_o and_o bring_v intolerable_a suffering_n upon_o the_o transgressor_n themselves_o also_o herein_o the_o lord_n give_v a_o great_a testimony_n of_o his_o power_n to_o save_v in_o as_o much_o as_o though_o he_o deliver_v up_o his_o son_n to_o suffer_v most_o deep_a affliction_n in_o and_o under_o sinner_n yet_o in_o due_a time_n he_o raise_v he_o up_o again_o even_o from_o death_n and_o do_v manifest_o set_v he_o over_o all_o his_o adversary_n according_a to_o the_o work_n of_o which_o mighty_a power_n he_o be_v able_a to_o save_v unto_o the_o uttermost_a all_o that_o come_v unto_o god_n by_o he_o and_o so_o these_o thing_n be_v inward_o present_v and_o set_v before_o the_o soul_n in_o the_o spirit_n and_o light_n of_o jesus_n christ_n be_v indeed_o very_o forcible_a and_o prevail_a to_o work_v faith_n in_o it_o both_o upon_o the_o mercy_n and_o power_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o to_o rest_v and_o stay_v its_o faith_n upon_o he_o for_o its_o full_a and_o perfect_a salvation_n as_o also_o to_o work_v and_o beget_v love_n unto_o he_o in_o the_o inward_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o wonderful_a love_n of_o god_n as_o manifest_v itself_o even_o so_o in_o the_o outward_a ii_o and_o yet_o more_o particular_o the_o come_n suffering_n and_o death_n of_o christ_n as_o present_v by_o his_o spirit_n in_o the_o soul_n as_o aforesaid_a have_v a_o very_a special_a influence_n to_o kindle_v most_o ardent_a love_n in_o it_o towards_o he_o in_o the_o sense_n of_o that_o love_n of_o his_o so_o wonderful_o manifest_v in_o the_o outward_a whereby_o for_o the_o soul_n save_v from_o sin_n and_o wrath_n he_o so_o humble_v himself_o by_o so_o many_o step_n and_o degree_n and_o bear_v such_o indignity_n and_o suffering_n as_o never_o any_o one_o do_v and_o all_o in_o love_n to_o the_o soul_n and_o for_o it_o and_o for_o its_o deliverance_n as_o aforesaid_a and_o that_o he_o shall_v be_v manifest_a in_o the_o outward_a body_n and_o suffer_v so_o deep_o therein_o even_o for_o the_o deliver_v our_o outward_a body_n also_o from_o sin_n and_o wrath_n these_o thing_n i_o say_v as_o present_v and_o set_v before_o the_o soul_n in_o his_o own_o spirit_n as_o it_o be_v himself_o tell_v it_o in_o a_o particular_a way_n how_o he_o have_v humble_v himself_o and_o what_o he_o have_v do_v and_o suffer_v for_o it_o be_v strong_a and_o prevail_a occasion_n to_o work_v most_o ardent_a and_o dear_a love_n in_o the_o soul_n towards_o he_o and_o his_o spirit_n and_o towards_o the_o father_n also_o who_o free_a gift_n of_o love_n he_o be_v iii_o and_o they_o have_v indeed_o a_o great_a influence_n when_o present_v in_o his_o spirit_n as_o aforesaid_a to_o work_v in_o our_o heart_n true_a and_o real_a repentance_n from_o all_o our_o sin_n yea_o and_o a_o perfect_a and_o universal_a hatred_n against_o they_o as_o have_v a_o sense_n that_o our_o sin_n be_v the_o occasion_n of_o his_o suffering_n yea_o his_o deep_a and_o heavy_a suffering_n even_o in_o his_o soul_n in_o the_o outward_a be_v through_o the_o burden_n of_o our_o iniquity_n which_o he_o then_o do_v bear_v so_o that_o the_o wound_n he_o get_v in_o his_o bless_a body_n with_o the_o nail_n and_o the_o spear_n and_o the_o thorn_n and_o the_o violent_a hand_n of_o man_n be_v nothing_o comparable_a to_o these_o wound_n he_o have_v in_o his_o righteous_a soul_n and_o
for_o certain_o this_o divine_a principle_n which_o be_v in_o thou_o be_v not_o altogether_o idle_a or_o without_o operation_n it_o be_v of_o a_o most_o active_a or_o operative_a nature_n even_o as_o fire_n and_o light_n in_o the_o outward_a can_v the_o outward_a sun_n shine_v and_o enlighten_v the_o earth_n and_o have_v no_o operation_n nor_o influence_n upon_o it_o or_o can_v the_o fire_n burn_v and_o have_v no_o operation_n or_o influence_n upon_o what_o be_v next_o unto_o it_o nay_o sure_o and_o therefore_o no_o more_o can_v this_o divine_a principle_n and_o light_n be_v in_o any_o soul_n but_o it_o must_v certain_o and_o infallible_o have_v some_o influence_n and_o operation_n upon_o that_o soul_n in_o who_o it_o be_v and_o that_o in_o order_n to_o salvation_n who_o day_n of_o visitation_n be_v not_o expire_v and_o the_o most_o proper_a operation_n of_o it_o in_o the_o first_o place_n be_v to_o convince_v the_o soul_n of_o truth_n i_o mean_v of_o somewhat_o of_o the_o only_o be_v in_o the_o darkness_n but_o it_o shine_v in_o the_o darkness_n and_o work_v against_o the_o darkness_n to_o reveal_v it_o and_o remove_v it_o even_o as_o the_o darkness_n do_v work_v in_o the_o soul_n to_o hide_v and_o obscure_v the_o light_n and_o as_o it_o be_v to_o extinguish_v and_o quench_v it_o in_o the_o soul_n and_o it_o be_v a_o most_o absurd_a thing_n to_o acknowledge_v that_o the_o natural_a principle_n have_v its_o operation_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o be_v not_o without_o its_o influence_n and_o force_n to_o move_v and_o act_v the_o soul_n as_o also_o that_o the_o soul_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o it_o be_v force_v to_o acknowledge_v to_o be_v true_a while_o yet_o it_o be_v divine_a light_n work_v in_o the_o soul_n more_o secret_o and_o hidden_o that_o have_v the_o main_a stroke_n and_o hand_n in_o the_o business_n at_o other_o time_n the_o divine_a light_n appear_v more_o immediate_o in_o the_o soul_n and_o more_o open_o and_o scarce_o at_o all_o make_v use_v of_o the_o natural_a principle_n or_o understanding_n further_a than_o in_o a_o passive_a way_n as_o when_o the_o eye_n look_v towards_o a_o object_n or_o as_o the_o ear_n hear_v a_o voice_n or_o sound_n wherein_o the_o soul_n be_v rather_o passive_a than_o active_a and_o sometime_o all_o the_o natural_a power_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v draw_v into_o a_o deep_a silence_n by_o the_o mighty_a and_o yet_o secret_a work_n of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o divine_a principle_n and_o light_n so_o that_o the_o soul_n by_o none_o of_o its_o natural_a or_o humane_a power_n or_o faculty_n do_v apprehend_v what_o be_v inward_o reveal_v in_o it_o by_o the_o divine_a light_n but_o they_o all_o be_v silence_v bind_v lock_v up_o and_o as_o it_o be_v make_v asleep_a both_o imagination_n and_o reason_n or_o whatever_o else_o can_v be_v call_v a_o natural_a or_o humane_a faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n be_v whole_o suspend_v and_o lay_v by_o as_o of_o no_o present_a use_n and_o the_o soul_n as_o it_o be_v whole_o dead_a for_o that_o present_a time_n unto_o they_o all_o as_o so_o many_o dead_a member_n the_o divine_a light_n and_o spirit_n do_v raise_v up_o and_o awaken_v in_o that_o soul_n a_o new_a sense_n and_o power_n of_o discern_v of_o which_o it_o former_o have_v no_o experience_n or_o at_o lest_o make_v no_o reflection_n upon_o the_o same_o which_o be_v the_o spiritual_a sensation_n of_o god_n and_o divine_a thing_n as_o inward_o reveal_v by_o the_o divine_a light_n but_o this_o kind_n of_o experience_n be_v more_o rare_a to_o new_a beginner_n and_o to_o who_o it_o be_v give_v be_v a_o most_o singular_a and_o choice_a mercy_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n which_o yet_o be_v most_o ordinary_a to_o all_o those_o who_o in_o any_o considerable_a measure_n be_v true_o convert_v unto_o the_o truth_n and_o leaven_v into_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o and_o if_o it_o shall_v please_v god_n at_o any_o time_n to_o give_v thou_o such_o a_o experience_n who_o be_v not_o yet_o so_o considerable_o convert_v unto_o the_o truth_n thou_o be_v to_o receive_v it_o as_o a_o singular_a favour_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n but_o if_o it_o be_v deny_v at_o present_a unto_o thou_o god_n not_o judge_v thou_o worthy_a of_o so_o high_a a_o favour_n thou_o oughte_v to_o be_v content_a with_o that_o other_o way_n and_o such_o a_o convincement_n be_v a_o true_a divine_a and_o spiritual_a inward_a operation_n motion_n and_o shining_n of_o the_o divine_a light_n in_o thou_o and_o breathe_n of_o the_o divine_a life_n in_o the_o silence_n and_o quietness_n of_o thy_o soul_n out_o of_o the_o many_o wander_n vain_a thought_n and_o imagination_n of_o thy_o mind_n thou_o will_v certain_o come_v to_o a_o true_a measure_n of_o clear_a discern_a of_o the_o true_a divine_a principle_n life_n and_o light_n and_o of_o the_o operation_n thereof_o so_o as_o to_o distinguish_v it_o from_o all_o that_o which_o be_v but_o natural_a and_o carnal_a as_o also_o from_o all_o that_o be_v of_o satan_n in_o his_o cunning_a transforming_n and_o although_o in_o the_o beginning_n it_o will_v be_v very_o hard_a to_o thou_o to_o attain_v to_o that_o perfect_a and_o absolute_a inward_a silence_n of_o mind_n from_o all_o thy_o own_o thought_n and_o imagination_n which_o will_v afterward_o become_v easy_a and_o familiar_a unto_o thou_o as_o thou_o do_v experience_n any_o considerable_a growth_n in_o the_o truth_n yet_o as_o thou_o presse_v after_o it_o thou_o will_v find_v they_o self_n help_v by_o the_o lord_n to_o come_v into_o some_o measure_n of_o true_a silence_n and_o although_o thou_o can_v not_o say_v that_o all_o vain_a foolish_a thought_n and_o idle_a imagination_n be_v put_v out_o of_o thy_o mind_n yet_o if_o a_o considerable_a part_n of_o they_o be_v go_v and_o evanished_a so_o that_o thy_o mind_n be_v somewhat_o more_o cool_a and_o quiet_a and_o still_o and_o empty_a of_o such_o thing_n than_o it_o be_v wont_a to_o be_v here_o thou_o will_v find_v thyself_o at_o some_o advantage_n and_o in_o some_o capacity_n to_o discern_v the_o divine_a light_n and_o work_v thereof_o even_o as_o it_o be_v in_o this_o imperfect_a state_n of_o silence_n or_o half_a silence_n as_o we_o may_v call_v it_o to_o help_v thou_o then_o a_o little_a further_o in_o this_o inquiry_n and_o search_n that_o thou_o may_v come_v to_o know_v discern_v and_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o true_a divine_a light_n and_o work_v thereof_o in_o thou_o which_o be_v indeed_o a_o very_a necessary_a knowledge_n and_o without_o which_o thou_o be_v liable_a to_o sit_v down_o in_o a_o false_a rest_n and_o build_v upon_o a_o false_a foundation_n as_o many_o do_v at_o this_o day_n take_v the_o natural_a light_n and_o principle_n for_o the_o divine_a and_o supernatural_a and_o so_o what_o the_o socinian_o and_o pelagian_n be_v in_o profession_n who_o profess_v no_o high_a principle_n in_o they_o necessary_a than_o the_o natural_a these_o man_n be_v whatever_o they_o profess_v of_o the_o necessity_n of_o have_v and_o be_v illuminate_v and_o lead_v by_o the_o spirit_n real_o in_o practice_n therefore_o that_o thou_o may_v avoid_v this_o snare_n and_o come_v to_o the_o true_a knowledge_n of_o the_o divine_a light_n and_o principle_n of_o god_n in_o thou_o i_o shall_v brief_o point_v at_o some_o distinguish_a mark_n and_o character_n whereby_o the_o divine_a and_o supernatural_a principle_n be_v true_o distinguishable_a from_o that_o which_o be_v but_o humane_a and_o natural_a as_o 1._o the_o light_n influence_n and_o operation_n of_o the_o humane_a and_o natural_a principle_n be_v cold_a saint_n and_o dead_a but_o that_o of_o the_o divine_a and_o supernatural_a warm_a live_a and_o powerful_a and_o the_o warmth_n power_n and_o life_n thereof_o reach_v not_o only_o the_o brain_n or_o head_n or_o the_o animal_n part_n and_o affection_n which_o the_o natural_a can_v do_v and_o often_o do_v but_o it_o reach_v also_o the_o heart_n and_o most_o inward_a part_n even_o the_o most_o inward_a affection_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o be_v of_o a_o heavenly_a and_o divine_a nature_n as_o the_o principle_n be_v of_o which_o it_o proceed_v it_o be_v say_v of_o christ_n when_o he_o preach_v outward_o he_o speak_v with_o authority_n or_o power_n and_o not_o as_o the_o scribe_n matth._n 7.29_o and_o he_o say_v himself_o the_o word_n that_o i_o speak_v unto_o you_o be_v spirit_n and_o life_n it_o be_v the_o spirit_n that_o quicken_v the_o flesh_n profit_v nothing_o joh._n 6.63_o and_o thus_o it_o be_v in_o the_o inward_a what_o christ_n speak_v in_o the_o soul_n or_o heart_n of_o any_o man_n or_o woman_n be_v with_o power_n even_o with_o a_o heavenly_a power_n and_o authority_n that_o raise_v a_o awe_n and_o reverence_n in_o the_o heart_n by_o which_o the_o soul_n be_v convince_v that_o it_o be_v indeed_o the_o voice_n or_o word_n of_o god_n and_o not_o of_o man_n by_o reason_n of_o that_o innate_a majesty_n and_o glory_n that_o be_v in_o it_o as_o it_o be_v say_v in_o psalm_n 29.4_o the_o voice_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v glorious_a the_o voice_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v full_a of_o majesty_n etc._n etc._n and_o although_o many_o soul_n be_v so_o dark_a blind_a deaf_a and_o stupid_a that_o many_o time_n they_o have_v no_o sense_n of_o any_o divine_a power_n or_o principle_n yet_o when_o it_o please_v god_n to_o speak_v in_o the_o most_o deaf_a and_o stupid_a soul_n he_o cause_v it_o to_o hear_v and_o raise_v up_o some_o small_a sense_n of_o the_o same_o in_o it_o at_o that_o present_a time_n although_o soon_o after_o darkness_n and_o death_n do_v prevail_v over_o they_o again_o and_o they_o forget_v any_o such_o experience_n as_o if_o they_o have_v never_o have_v it_o how_o do_v god_n speak_v unto_o cain_n and_o expostulate_v with_o he_o we_o read_v not_o that_o it_o be_v by_o a_o outward_a voice_n nor_o be_v there_o any_o need_n to_o suppose_v that_o when_o god_n reprove_v he_o for_o his_o anger_n against_o his_o brother_n it_o be_v by_o a_o outward_a voice_n and_o not_o rather_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n inward_o in_o his_o heart_n and_o conscience_n as_o he_o do_v reprove_v man_n at_o this_o day_n and_o as_o he_o do_v strive_v in_o man_n before_o the_o deluge_n and_o do_v judge_n and_o reprove_v he_o for_o sin_n gen._n 6.3_o my_o spirit_n shall_v not_o always_o strive_v or_o contend_v in_o man_n for_o so_o the_o word_n shall_v be_v translate_v and_o christ_n promise_v that_o he_o will_v send_v the_o comforter_n unto_o his_o disciple_n to_o wit_n the_o holy_a spirit_n and_o he_o shall_v that_o some_o be_v so_o become_v do_v plain_o imply_v that_o once_o they_o have_v a_o feeling_n again_o when_o a_o man_n reprove_v himself_o he_o do_v it_o too_o partial_o although_o he_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o judge_n himself_o in_o the_o general_n a_o great_a sinner_n yet_o there_o be_v many_o time_n many_o particular_a sin_n whereof_o he_o be_v guilty_a that_o he_o will_v not_o reprove_v something_o in_o thy_o heart_n cut_v it_o and_o make_v gash_n therein_o yea_o and_o that_o as_o a_o fire_n burn_v in_o it_o which_o great_o pain_v and_o afflict_v thou_o so_o that_o at_o such_o time_n no_o outward_a pleasure_n can_v comfort_v or_o ease_v thou_o furthermore_o do_v thou_o not_o find_v at_o time_n somewhat_o arise_v as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o thy_o heart_n and_o send_v forth_o a_o secret_a virtue_n whereby_o it_o seek_v to_o pierce_v thy_o whole_a heart_n and_o so_o far_o as_o it_o pierce_v or_o enter_v it_o somewhat_o soften_v thy_o heart_n and_o work_v some_o however_o bad_a but_o have_v have_v some_o experience_n more_o or_o less_o of_o these_o and_o such_o like_a work_n in_o he_o thou_o may_v say_v i_o find_v indeed_o somewhat_o work_v in_o my_o heart_n after_o the_o manner_n as_o be_v declare_v and_o that_o frequent_o but_o most_o especial_o when_o i_o be_o most_o quiet_a and_o still_o in_o mind_n but_o i_o never_o apprehend_v this_o to_o be_v any_o other_o thing_n then_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n check_v i_o in_o my_o conscience_n as_o i_o have_v be_v always_o inform_v by_o my_o teacher_n but_o i_o say_v unto_o thou_o therein_o thou_o have_v be_v misinform_v as_o in_o many_o other_o particular_n for_o this_o thing_n that_o work_v in_o thou_o after_o the_o aforesaid_a manner_n be_v the_o very_a seed_n of_o god_n or_o the_o divine_a seed_n in_o which_o god_n in_o jesus_n christ_n be_v real_o present_a in_o thou_o and_o in_o and_o through_o the_o seed_n work_v in_o this_o manner_n in_o thou_o for_o the_o salvation_n of_o thy_o soul_n take_v for_o the_o save_n of_o soul_n be_v after_o the_o sort_n of_o a_o real_a generation_n such_o as_o regeneration_n be_v it_o be_v most_o proper_a to_o begin_v it_o from_o a_o seed_n and_o it_o be_v a_o easy_a thing_n for_o the_o lord_n to_o appear_v in_o this_o seed_n by_o such_o manifestation_n of_o power_n as_o on_o a_o sudden_a to_o remove_v all_o impediment_n and_o instant_o to_o cause_v it_o to_o spring_v up_o into_o its_o full_a stature_n growth_n and_o proportion_n but_o it_o have_v please_v he_o to_o do_v otherways_o for_o he_o can_v bring_v glory_n to_o himself_o the_o more_o in_o the_o creature_n salvation_n that_o he_o begin_v it_o yea_o and_o carry_v it_o on_o in_o a_o weak_a and_o foolish_a appearance_n to_o the_o natural_a eye_n now_o this_o be_v it_o which_o christ_n himself_o teach_v that_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n in_o man_n at_o first_o be_v like_a unto_o a_o grain_n of_o mustardseed_n the_o least_o of_o all_o seed_n but_o after_o it_o be_v grow_v up_o it_o become_v the_o great_a of_o all_o herb_n wherefore_o despise_v it_o not_o though_o it_o be_v a_o very_a little_a thing_n in_o thou_o for_o as_o little_a as_o it_o be_v it_o be_v the_o god_n consist_v not_o simple_o in_o mere_a act_n as_o when_o it_o exercise_v act_n of_o conversion_n towards_o god_n these_o and_o other_o act_n of_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n do_v contribute_v and_o conduce_v unto_o this_o union_n and_o beget_v it_o yet_o the_o soul_n enjoy_v a_o more_o constant_a and_o permanent_a union_n with_o god_n then_o by_o act_n whether_o of_o one_o or_o all_o its_o power_n for_o if_o the_o soul_n union_n consist_v only_o in_o act_n then_o when_o it_o do_v not_o act_n but_o be_v whole_o suspend_v in_o its_o act_n towards_o god_n the_o union_n shall_v cease_v which_o be_v false_a for_o when_o a_o righteous_a man_n sleep_v so_o that_o perhaps_o his_o soul_n exercise_v no_o act_n yet_o his_o union_n remain_v with_o he_o buâ—_n because_o the_o soul_n enjoy_v a_o union_n with_o god_n by_o its_o act_n of_o conversion_n as_o aforesaid_a proceed_v from_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n therefore_o this_o union_n enjoy_v by_o act_n may_v be_v call_v actual_a union_n and_o the_o other_o which_o abide_v without_o act_n or_o while_o act_n be_v suspend_v may_v be_v call_v potential_a because_o the_o soul_n remain_v in_o do_v nothing_o not_o so_o much_o as_o say_v that_o jesus_n be_v the_o lord_n but_o by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n divine_o and_o supernatural_o assist_v we_o indeed_o we_o may_v repeat_v the_o bare_a word_n without_o any_o supernatural_a assistance_n but_o here_o they_o be_v no_o wise_a regard_v of_o the_o lord_n for_o if_o they_o be_v not_o express_v with_o the_o supernatural_a assistance_n of_o which_o he_o require_v moreover_o whatever_o we_o do_v as_o a_o service_n unto_o the_o lord_n we_o ought_v to_o do_v it_o in_o faith_n but_o if_o we_o do_v not_o certain_o know_v from_o what_o principle_n or_o power_n we_o do_v any_o thing_n we_o be_v leave_v in_o a_o suspense_n and_o doubtfulness_n and_o have_v nothing_o but_o conjecture_v at_o best_a to_o build_v upon_o which_o be_v far_o unto_o god_n but_o it_o be_v not_o to_o the_o true_a god_n but_o a_o false_a even_o a_o image_n of_o their_o own_o frame_n and_o devise_v and_o as_o unto_o christ_n but_o indeed_o it_o be_v unto_o antichrist_n and_o sure_o this_o be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o very_a beginning_n of_o the_o work_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o iniquity_n when_o satan_n put_v on_o the_o appearance_n of_o god_n and_o there_o be_v in_o some_o measure_n a_o true_a objective_n concept_n or_o idea_n of_o god_n put_v or_o plant_v by_o god_n himself_o in_o every_o man_n mind_n which_o be_v in_o and_o of_o the_o divine_a seed_n sow_v in_o every_o man_n yet_o the_o usual_a knowledge_n that_o man_n common_o have_v of_o god_n do_v not_o proceed_v from_o this_o true_a idea_n in_o the_o divine_a seed_n nor_o be_v it_o the_o pattern_n or_o example_n according_a to_o which_o they_o usual_o frame_v the_o thought_n and_o conception_n of_o their_o mind_n when_o they_o usual_o speak_v read_v hear_v or_o consider_v of_o he_o in_o their_o mind_n forasmuch_o as_o the_o divine_a seed_n in_o and_o through_o which_o the_o true_a idea_n be_v receive_v in_o most_o man_n yea_o in_o all_o wicked_a man_n and_o unconvert_v be_v that_o it_o do_v little_o observe_v it_o and_o many_o time_n not_o at_o all_o even_o as_o if_o some_o friend_n pass_v by_o before_o i_o in_o my_o view_n yet_o i_o be_v much_o take_v up_o with_o look_v in_o question_n and_o debate_v among_o people_n in_o this_o day_n but_o now_o for_o the_o further_o open_v of_o this_o particular_a i_o find_v it_o with_o i_o to_o add_v somewhat_o more_o as_o 1._o when_o i_o say_v do_v nothing_o doubtful_o i_o do_v not_o understand_v it_o so_o that_o thou_o be_v not_o to_o do_v a_o thing_n if_o there_o be_v any_o objection_n which_o thou_o find_v arise_v against_o it_o either_o from_o thy_o carnal_a reason_n or_o unbelieving_a part_n till_o thou_o get_v rid_v of_o they_o for_o notwithstanding_o they_o thou_o may_v find_v a_o good_a clearness_n in_o thy_o mind_n which_o shut_v they_o out_o or_o put_v they_o under_o and_o so_o thou_o may_v proceed_v upon_o thy_o clearness_n from_o the_o lord_n in_o thy_o mind_n notwithstanding_o these_o objection_n although_o thou_o can_v not_o give_v they_o any_o direct_a and_o positive_a answer_n but_o this_o that_o thou_o be_v clear_a of_o the_o lord_n to_o the_o contrary_a yet_o if_o the_o objection_n shall_v so_o far_o prevail_v as_o quite_o to_o cloud_v thy_o clearness_n so_o that_o thou_o lose_v sight_n of_o it_o this_o be_v indeed_o thy_o sin_n so_o to_o have_v permit_v they_o to_o do_v yet_o till_o thou_o get_v they_o in_o some_o measure_n remove_v and_o clearness_n in_o some_o measure_n be_v give_v thou_o from_o the_o lord_n thy_o safety_n be_v to_o forbear_v again_o whereas_o some_o wrong_a spirit_n may_v take_v a_o occasion_n from_o this_o unjust_o to_o shelter_v themselves_o under_o a_o cover_n in_o their_o omission_n and_o neglect_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o the_o lord_n require_v say_v they_o find_v not_o clearness_n to_o do_v they_o therefore_o i_o must_v add_v this_o also_o that_o if_o thy_o unclearness_n proceed_v from_o a_o wrong_n and_o deceitful_a part_n of_o thy_o heart_n which_o be_v unwilling_a to_o be_v clear_v because_o it_o be_v unwilling_a to_o obey_v it_o be_v another_o case_n for_o then_o thy_o forbearance_n be_v thy_o sin_n though_o thou_o be_v unclear_a because_o thou_o may_v have_v be_v clear_a have_v thou_o stand_v single_o and_o yet_o if_o thou_o do_v thing_n in_o this_o unclearness_n thou_o sin_v also_o thou_o may_v say_v then_o what_o shall_v i_o do_v for_o this_o be_v a_o strait_a â—â—se_n i_o answer_v come_v unto_o the_o light_n and_o turn_v to_o it_o in_o singleness_n and_o that_o will_v clear_v thou_o and_o so_o thou_o be_v to_o do_v they_o v._o be_v careful_a to_o keep_v thy_o heart_n and_o mind_n in_o a_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o power_n thereof_o at_o all_o time_n as_o much_o as_o be_v possible_a i_o know_v at_o first_o and_o for_o some_o time_n it_o will_v be_v hard_a for_o thou_o yea_o at_o time_n till_o thou_o witness_v a_o further_a growth_n and_o become_v more_o inward_o acquaint_v with_o the_o enemy_n work_n thou_o will_v as_o it_o be_v lose_v much_o what_o all_o and_o clear_v and_o distinct_a sense_n feel_v and_o discern_v of_o the_o life_n as_o if_o it_o be_v not_o in_o thou_o but_o this_o be_v as_o it_o be_v a_o fit_a of_o a_o lethargy_n a_o faint_a or_o fall_v into_o a_o swarf_n for_o even_o the_o spiritual_a life_n suffer_v these_o thing_n at_o time_n especial_o when_o it_o be_v young_a and_o tender_a no_o less_o than_o the_o natural_a but_o now_o as_o one_o live_v in_o the_o natural_a life_n do_v what_o in_o he_o lie_v to_o be_v keep_v out_o of_o such_o fit_n which_o bereave_v he_o of_o the_o present_a use_n of_o his_o natural_a sense_n and_o do_v great_o desire_v always_o to_o have_v the_o free_a and_o lively_a use_n of_o his_o natural_a sense_n which_o be_v very_o needful_a unto_o he_o for_o his_o preservation_n from_o outward_a danger_n even_o so_o one_o who_o be_v come_v to_o live_v in_o the_o spiritual_a life_n and_o have_v once_o receive_v the_o power_n of_o of_o the_o spiritual_a sense_n whereby_o to_o hear_v see_v taste_n smell_v and_o feel_v heavenly_a object_n as_o also_o to_o have_v a_o sense_n of_o what_o hurt_v from_o the_o contrary_a life_n and_o power_n thereof_o he_o will_v and_o aught_o to_o be_v very_o careful_a to_o preserve_v the_o free_a and_o lively_a exercise_n of_o they_o for_o they_o be_v give_v unto_o he_o both_o for_o his_o comfort_n and_o also_o to_o be_v help_n unto_o he_o whereby_o he_o may_v know_v thing_n good_a and_o evil_n profitable_a and_o hurtful_a unto_o his_o spiritual_a condition_n that_o so_o he_o may_v choose_v and_o embrace_v the_o good_a and_o refuâ—e_v the_o evil_n now_o if_o he_o run_v out_o from_o the_o inward_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o its_o power_n till_o he_o be_v restore_v again_o into_o the_o sense_n thereof_o he_o be_v out_o of_o any_o true_a capacity_n to_o know_v either_o the_o thing_n he_o shall_v do_v or_o the_o manner_n how_o to_o do_v they_o therefore_o it_o plain_o appear_v how_o needful_a it_o be_v unto_o a_o man_n who_o be_v come_v to_o be_v a_o partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n to_o be_v very_o careful_a to_o live_v always_o in_o the_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o same_o and_o the_o power_n thereof_o and_o this_o he_o shall_v the_o more_o ready_o attain_v unto_o by_o the_o due_a and_o right_a use_n and_o observance_n of_o the_o former_a advertisement_n and_o those_o which_o yet_o remain_v to_o be_v mention_v this_o particular_a be_v contrary_a unto_o the_o doctrine_n that_o pass_v general_o among_o sense_n and_o yet_o at_o present_a have_v not_o the_o exercise_n of_o his_o sight_n now_o there_o be_v divers_a other_o spiritual_a sense_n beside_o the_o sight_n whiâ—â—_n be_v the_o clear_a manifestation_n and_o it_o be_v true_a that_o many_o time_n the_o child_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n can_v believe_v when_o in_o some_o sort_n they_o do_v not_o see_v yet_o i_o altogether_o deny_v that_o any_o can_v believe_v without_o some_o inward_a spiritual_a sense_n or_o another_o whereby_o that_o which_o they_o shall_v believe_v be_v propose_v unto_o they_o objective_o for_o otherwise_o it_o be_v a_o groundless_a faith_n also_o by_o these_o work_n we_o walk_v by_o faith_n and_o not_o by_o sense_n may_v be_v understand_v the_o outward_a sense_n or_o the_o inward_a which_o reside_v only_o in_o the_o low_a part_n of_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v wrought_v upon_o by_o natural_a and_o outward_a object_n by_o these_o we_o be_v not_o to_o walk_v nor_o expect_v to_o have_v the_o lord_n to_o propose_v himself_o unto_o we_o in_o order_n to_o satisfy_v we_o by_o our_o outward_a sense_n or_o by_o the_o inward_a sensible_a affection_n in_o the_o low_a part_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o it_o be_v the_o excellency_n of_o a_o christian_a life_n that_o give_v we_o to_o walk_v with_o god_n both_o confident_o and_o comfortable_o to_o follow_v he_o in_o the_o way_n of_o obedience_n when_o we_o have_v nothing_o from_o these_o inferior_a sense_n to_o help_v or_o encourage_v we_o but_o many_o time_n to_o the_o contrary_n and_o as_o for_o that_o which_o they_o call_v sensible_a devotion_n which_o some_o say_v we_o must_v not_o much_o seek_v after_o if_o by_o sensible_a devotion_n they_o understand_v that_o which_o only_o affect_v the_o inferior_a sensible_a power_n of_o the_o soul_n such_o as_o the_o fancy_n and_o imagination_n whereby_o the_o inferior_a affection_n of_o love_n joy_n fear_v grief_n etc._n etc._n be_v move_v and_o stir_v which_o can_v be_v doâ—e_n by_o some_o pathetic_a discourse_n or_o description_n of_o thing_n by_o a_o form_n of_o word_n i_o agree_v unto_o what_o they_o say_v but_o if_o by_o sensible_a devotion_n they_o understand_v that_o which_o move_v the_o very_a spirit_n and_o will_n of_o man_n with_o the_o supreme_a affection_n of_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n and_o the_o power_n thereof_o upon_o its_o spiritual_a sense_n i_o say_v this_o devotion_n be_v most_o needful_a in_o some_o measure_n and_o be_v to_o be_v seek_v after_o by_o all_o for_o it_o be_v the_o high_a and_o noble_a kind_n of_o devotion_n and_o the_o most_o rational_a even_o that_o we_o have_v a_o real_a sense_n and_o feel_n upon_o our_o heart_n of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a life_n of_o the_o only_a and_o true_a god_n when_o we_o worship_v he_o so_o as_o to_o be_v inward_o melt_v into_o a_o holy_a tenderness_n before_o he_o through_o what_o we_o feel_v and_o taste_v and_o savour_n of_o his_o divine_a power_n and_o not_o apprehend_v nor_o acknowledge_v that_o that_o birth_n have_v any_o thing_n of_o its_o own_o nature_n more_o than_o the_o birth_n of_o any_o other_o man_n which_o i_o say_v it_o have_v according_a to_o the_o revelation_n of_o god_n give_v i_o concern_v it_o and_o this_o be_v demonstrable_a also_o from_o scripture_n â—_o but_o i_o shall_v soon_o put_v a_o end_n to_o both_o these_o reason_n and_o yet_o also_o speak_v or_o declare_v free_o that_o which_o be_v give_v i_o concern_v the_o same_o and_o in_o plainness_n so_o far_o as_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n can_v admit_v the_o seed_n of_o mary_n but_o of_o a_o divine_a seed_n and_o his_o soul_n have_v all_o the_o perfection_n and_o property_n which_o the_o soul_n of_o man_n in_o innocency_n have_v but_o it_o have_v also_o much_o more_o excellent_a property_n and_o perfection_n and_o that_o substantial_o and_o therefore_o his_o body_n though_o it_o can_v suffer_v death_n yet_o it_o can_v not_o suffer_v corruption_n and_o his_o soul_n can_v not_o sin_n nor_o be_v corrupt_v with_o iniquity_n but_o do_v ever_o suffer_v under_o it_o and_o by_o it_o which_o soul_n of_o christ_n be_v the_o quicken_a chemist_n and_o physician_n and_o thus_o be_v our_o bless_a lord_n use_v both_o in_o his_o soul_n and_o body_n his_o deep_a sufring_n in_o both_o be_v like_o a_o wine-press_n which_o serve_v to_o squeeze_v and_o press_v out_o the_o hide_a wine_n that_o be_v in_o his_o grape_n even_o that_o pure_a and_o precious_a water_n and_o blood_n which_o come_v out_o at_o his_o side_n on_o the_o cross_n and_o when_o in_o the_o garden_n he_o sweat_v that_o drop_n of_o blood_n fall_v to_o the_o ground_n these_o very_a drop_n of_o water_n and_o blood_n have_v a_o most_o excellent_a virtue_n in_o they_o beyond_o what_o man_n heart_n be_v able_a to_o conceive_v of_o whereby_o they_o enter_v into_o the_o very_a kernel_n and_o quintessence_n of_o the_o whole_a creation_n to_o its_o very_a heart_n for_o its_o deliverance_n and_o restauration_n and_o this_o be_v as_o a_o seed_n that_o be_v then_o sow_v in_o the_o very_a heart_n of_o the_o outward_a nature_n by_o which_o it_o be_v bless_v of_o god_n in_o some_o measure_n and_o through_o which_o it_o shall_v in_o due_a time_n be_v perfect_o deliver_v and_o cure_v of_o its_o vanity_n corruption_n and_o bondage_n therefore_o it_o be_v that_o at_o the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n the_o whole_a outward_a creation_n fall_v into_o a_o wonderful_a passion_n and_o suffering_n in_o so_o much_o that_o there_o be_v a_o great_a darkness_n over_o all_o and_o the_o very_a earth_n be_v as_o it_o be_v rent_n for_o that_o secret_a and_o excellent_a virtue_n which_o go_v forth_o from_o he_o at_o his_o suffering_n even_o in_o the_o water_n and_o the_o blood_n pierce_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o body_n of_o the_o world_n and_o wrought_v in_o it_o like_o physic_n that_o work_v strong_o against_o the_o corrupt_a humour_n in_o man_n body_n that_o do_v great_o affect_v the_o body_n with_o suffering_n and_o thus_o it_o be_v even_o fit_a that_o the_o creation_n shall_v after_o its_o manner_n suffer_v with_o he_o which_o be_v to_o partake_v of_o such_o glorious_a effect_n through_o his_o suffering_n and_o though_o the_o outward_a creation_n be_v not_o yet_o cure_v through_o the_o secret_a virtue_n of_o that_o water_n and_o blood_n no_o nor_o yet_o the_o body_n of_o the_o saint_n yet_o in_o due_a time_n they_o shall_v even_o through_o and_o by_o the_o virtue_n of_o these_o suffering_n but_o as_o i_o have_v say_v above_o so_o do_v i_o again_o repeat_v it_o that_o it_o may_v have_v the_o more_o weight_n viz._n that_o we_o be_v not_o too_o nice_o to_o make_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o influence_n and_o effect_n of_o his_o outward_a and_o inward_a suffering_n but_o to_o understand_v they_o in_o a_o perfect_a conjunction_n and_o that_o the_o end_n of_o his_o suffer_v in_o both_o be_v this_o viz._n 1._o both_o to_o quench_v and_o allay_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n which_o be_v kindle_v both_o in_o man_n soul_n and_o body_n and_o also_o in_o the_o whole_a body_n of_o the_o creation_n and_o 2._o to_o purify_v and_o cure_v both_o man_n and_o also_o the_o outward_a creation_n from_o corruption_n vanity_n and_o bondage_n and_o so_o in_o relation_n to_o man_n this_o i_o say_v that_o the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o obedience_n life_n and_o righteousness_n both_o inward_o and_o outward_o have_v a_o very_a bless_a influence_n upon_o man_n both_o to_o remove_v the_o wrath_n and_o also_o to_o remove_v sin_n the_o cause_n of_o it_o and_o to_o bring_v in_o everlasting_a righteousness_n to_o cover_v the_o soul_n with_o by_o a_o real_a participation_n of_o it_o over_z and_o beyond_o all_o imaginary_a reckon_n and_o imputation_n of_o man_n though_o the_o imputation_n of_o god_n unto_o man_n â—we_v own_o and_o this_o i_o say_v further_o that_o the_o wrath_n be_v no_o further_o remove_v from_o man_n he_o do_v so_o bear_v it_o indeed_o that_o he_o bear_v it_o up_o from_o fall_v upon_o we_o in_o its_o full_a weight_n which_o if_o it_o have_v do_v it_o will_v have_v sink_v we_o into_o a_o eternal_a conscience_n against_o all_o manner_n of_o sin_n reprove_v and_o condemn_v those_o sin_n in_o man_n which_o man_n himself_o by_o his_o corrupt_a reason_n do_v excuse_n and_o justify_v 2._o the_o argumentation_n be_v they_o force_v to_o make_v use_n of_o especial_o against_o a_o atheist_n if_o he_o be_v of_o a_o cunning_a and_o subtle_a wit_n and_o when_o a_o man_n be_v inward_o pursue_v with_o atheistical_a thought_n and_o tempt_v in_o his_o heart_n to_o think_v that_o there_o be_v no_o god_n if_o he_o go_v to_o reason_v the_o matter_n and_o essay_n to_o overcome_v that_o tentation_n seem_v unpleasant_a yet_o in_o the_o unconvert_v and_o corrupt_a state_n man_n be_v true_o sensible_a of_o the_o inward_a work_n and_o operation_n and_o appearance_n of_o god_n in_o the_o divine_a principle_n of_o his_o light_n life_n and_o spirit_n in_o judgement_n and_o wrath_n and_o terror_n so_o that_o they_o can_v feel_v the_o word_n of_o life_n in_o they_o as_o it_o prick_v and_o wound_v they_o in_o their_o heart_n and_o be_v as_o a_o hammer_n a_o axe_n a_o two-edged_a sword_n and_o fire_n in_o their_o most_o inward_a part_n against_o not_o only_o all_o manner_n of_o actual_a transgression_n but_o against_o the_o very_a habit_n and_o habitual_a inclination_n of_o sin_n lay_v the_o axe_n to_o the_o root_n of_o the_o tree_n and_o strike_v at_o the_o very_a nature_n and_o such_o perfect_a contrariety_n to_o sin_n as_o be_v itself_o exceed_o corrupt_v and_o defile_v therewith_o 4._o the_o divine_a principle_n work_v most_o powerful_o and_o sensible_o when_o the_o mind_n be_v silent_a and_o do_v rest_n from_o its_o own_o mere_a natural_a work_n and_o especial_o from_o its_o soar_a imagination_n and_o lofty_a reason_n and_o although_o in_o the_o unconverted_a state_n it_o seldom_o or_o never_o be_v perfect_o silent_a yet_o at_o sometime_o it_o be_v more_o silent_a quiet_a and_o calm_a than_o at_o other_o time_n for_o even_o the_o sea_n do_v not_o always_o rage_n although_o it_o always_o have_v some_o motion_n 5._o the_o divine_a principle_n never_o work_v at_o or_o in_o the_o will_n of_o man_n but_o only_o in_o the_o will_n of_o god_n whereas_o the_o principal_o whereby_o it_o can_v be_v discern_v from_o the_o humane_a and_o natural_a for_o although_o it_o be_v true_o distinguishable_a also_o by_o its_o effect_n as_o christ_n say_v you_o shall_v know_v the_o tree_n by_o its_o fruit_n yet_o the_o question_n at_o present_a relate_v to_o the_o state_n of_o those_o who_o be_v but_o new_o convince_v and_o so_o have_v but_o little_a experience_n of_o its_o effect_n in_o they_o also_o see_v there_o be_v counterfeit_a effect_n as_o a_o counterfeit_a holiness_n purity_n humility_n etc._n etc._n the_o true_a effect_n can_v be_v infallible_o
