many_o of_o they_o after_o many_o year_n go_v to_o church_n and_o hear_n of_o sermon_n have_v no_o more_o understanding_n in_o the_o very_a principle_n of_o their_o religion_n than_o they_o have_v when_o they_o be_v child_n and_o of_o who_o we_o may_v say_v as_o st._n paul_n do_v of_o some_o that_o they_o be_v ever_o learning_n but_o never_o able_a to_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o truth_n 2._o tim._n 3.7_o how_o many_o be_v puff_v up_o with_o a_o great_a opinion_n of_o their_o own_o knowledge_n that_o know_v nothing_o as_o they_o ought_v to_o know_v and_o will_v never_o know_v any_o thing_n because_o those_o that_o shall_v and_o will_v instruct_v they_o can_v know_v their_o ignorance_n till_o it_o be_v too_o late_o to_o give_v they_o instruction_n how_o many_o of_o they_o become_v a_o prey_n to_o seducer_n and_o drink_v in_o damnable_a doctrine_n with_o as_o much_o eagerness_n as_o they_o shall_v do_v the_o most_o save_a truth_n mere_o because_o they_o take_v upon_o they_o to_o judge_v of_o every_o thing_n and_o will_v not_o take_v advice_n of_o those_o who_o god_n have_v set_v over_o they_o to_o direct_v they_o how_o many_o go_v groan_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o trouble_a conscience_n for_o many_o year_n and_o it_o may_v be_v after_o all_o become_v desperate_a and_o lay_v violent_a hand_n upon_o themselves_o because_o they_o will_v not_o discover_v their_o grief_n to_o a_o spiritual_a physician_n who_o may_v have_v pour_v wine_n and_o oil_n into_o their_o wound_n and_o have_v bind_v they_o up_o to_o their_o everlasting_a peace_n and_o comfort_n how_o many_o go_v on_o in_o a_o evil_a course_n who_o may_v be_v persuade_v to_o leave_v it_o but_o for_o some_o prejudices_fw-la which_o they_o have_v entertain_v either_o against_o a_o good_a life_n in_o general_n or_o some_o particular_a duty_n or_o against_o some_o doctrine_n which_o if_o receive_v will_v work_v a_o reformation_n in_o they_o which_z prejudices_fw-la christ_n minister_n can_v remove_v because_o they_o know_v they_o not_o how_o many_o in_o a_o word_n that_o mean_v well_o and_o make_v many_o good_a promise_n and_o resolution_n be_v overcome_v by_o their_o lust_n and_o the_o temptation_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o the_o world_n mere_o for_o want_v of_o particular_a direction_n as_o to_o those_o lust_n and_o those_o temptation_n these_o sad_a shipwreck_n and_o many_o more_o which_o thou_o may_v daily_o behold_v may_v convince_v thou_o how_o dangerous_a it_o be_v to_o go_v in_o the_o common_a way_n and_o how_o much_o safe_o it_o will_v be_v for_o thou_o to_o follow_v the_o advice_n that_o i_o have_v give_v thou_o and_o if_o man_n will_v not_o be_v persuade_v that_o it_o be_v their_o duty_n to_o do_v thus_o i_o be_o sure_a they_o may_v see_v that_o it_o be_v so_o much_o their_o interest_n that_o they_o can_v despise_v it_o without_o despise_v their_o own_o soul_n and_o as_o for_o the_o imputation_n of_o singularity_n which_o thou_o may_v be_v threaten_v with_o it_o be_v but_o what_o the_o best_a of_o christ_n disciple_n have_v undergo_v in_o all_o age_n and_o no_o good_a christian_n will_v make_v any_o reckon_n of_o it_o be_v we_o to_o please_v man_n we_o shall_v have_v reason_n to_o dread_v it_o but_o since_o our_o business_n be_v to_o please_v god_n and_o to_o save_v our_o soul_n it_o be_v no_o matter_n what_o they_o either_o say_v or_o think_v of_o we_o suppose_v my_o brother_n that_o christ_n have_v show_v himself_o as_o much_o concern_v for_o the_o health_n of_o our_o body_n or_o the_o increase_n of_o our_o estate_n as_o he_o have_v do_v for_o the_o salvation_n of_o our_o soul_n that_o he_o have_v appoint_v a_o order_n of_o man_n to_o teach_v we_o how_o to_o get_v money_n or_o to_o preserve_v ourselves_o in_o health_n and_o strength_n for_o many_o year_n and_o have_v give_v they_o as_o strict_a a_o charge_n to_o take_v care_n of_o it_o and_o be_v diligent_a in_o it_o and_o have_v promise_v they_o as_o great_a assistance_n to_o make_v they_o care_n and_o endeavour_n effectual_a to_o these_o end_n as_o he_o have_v do_v to_o the_o appoint_a guide_n of_o soul_n and_o that_o he_o have_v command_v all_o man_n as_o strict_o to_o respect_v they_o as_o his_o officer_n appoint_v to_o these_o purpose_n to_o follow_v their_o direction_n and_o submit_v themselves_o in_o all_o thing_n to_o they_o as_o he_o have_v command_v man_n to_o submit_v to_o their_o spiritual_a guide_n suppose_v this_o i_o say_v do_v thou_o think_v that_o man_n will_v behave_v themselves_o in_o that_o manner_n towards_o these_o good_a friend_n of_o their_o body_n as_o they_o do_v to_o the_o great_a friend_n and_o guide_n of_o their_o soul_n will_v they_o content_v themselves_o to_o hear_v they_o read_v once_o or_o twice_o a_o week_n a_o public_a lecture_n of_o physic_n or_o good_a husbandry_n no_o no_o we_o shall_v see_v every_o man_n run_v to_o their_o house_n and_o desire_v private_a conversation_n with_o they_o we_o shall_v hear_v one_o say_v sir_n you_o take_v great_a pain_n among_o we_o and_o read_v very_o well_o and_o learned_o but_o i_o be_o a_o poor_a ignorant_a man_n and_o understand_v but_o little_a and_o remember_v less_o and_o therefore_o i_o pray_v you_o to_o explain_v and_o repeat_v some_o of_o those_o good_a thing_n to_o i_o which_o you_o speak_v in_o public_a and_o another_z we_o shall_v hear_v complain_v that_o he_o can_v receive_v no_o benefit_n by_o all_o his_o pain_n because_o his_o discourse_n be_v not_o proper_a for_o his_o case_n and_o therefore_o beseech_v he_o to_o consider_v his_o particular_a supposition_n to_o make_v loud_a outcry_n against_o the_o appoint_a physician_n as_o be_v false_a to_o their_o trust_n in_o case_n they_o shall_v refuse_v to_o hear_v they_o in_o private_a and_o refer_v they_o to_o their_o public_a lecture_n now_o let_v any_o man_n tell_v i_o why_o man_n do_v not_o take_v the_o same_o course_n for_o their_o soul_n which_o they_o will_v take_v for_o their_o body_n and_o estate_n will_v they_o say_v that_o their_o soul_n have_v not_o so_o much_o need_v of_o the_o help_n of_o christ_n minister_n as_o their_o body_n have_v of_o the_o help_n of_o physician_n and_o that_o they_o know_v better_o how_o to_o secure_v their_o spiritual_a and_o eternal_a welfare_n than_o they_o do_v their_o temporal_n this_o will_v betray_v more_o stupid_a ignorance_n or_o devilish_a pride_n and_o self-conceit_n than_o they_o will_v be_v willing_a to_o discover_v will_v they_o say_v that_o the_o minister_n may_v understand_v the_o particular_a necessity_n of_o every_o person_n and_o provide_v for_o they_o without_o their_o take_v the_o course_n prescribe_v and_o that_o they_o may_v suit_v their_o public_a instruction_n exhortation_n and_o direction_n to_o all_o man_n capacity_n how_o different_a soever_o they_o be_v this_o will_v be_v to_o make_v they_o more_o than_o prophet_n to_o ascribe_v a_o kind_n of_o omniscience_n to_o they_o yea_o and_o a_o omnipotence_n too_o to_o make_v their_o sermon_n as_o god_n be_v say_v by_o some_o to_o have_v make_v the_o manna_n in_o the_o wilderness_n agreeable_a to_o the_o taste_n of_o every_o one_o which_o i_o suppose_v no_o man_n in_o his_o wit_n will_v do_v what_o then_o be_v the_o reason_n of_o it_o for_o my_o part_n i_o can_v give_v no_o other_o than_o this_o that_o either_o they_o be_v gross_o ignorant_a and_o little_o better_a than_o beast_n in_o understanding_n or_o mere_a infidel_n under_o the_o name_n of_o christian_n or_o if_o they_o do_v in_o some_o sort_n believe_v the_o gospel_n yet_o their_o heart_n be_v so_o engage_v to_o the_o world_n that_o they_o can_v have_v any_o serious_a and_o constant_a regard_n to_o their_o immortal_a soul_n but_o to_o put_v a_o end_n to_o this_o matter_n let_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o common_a practice_n be_v good_a or_o bad_a i_o be_o sure_a the_o effect_n of_o it_o be_v sad_a and_o lamentable_a the_o great_a decay_n of_o christian_a piety_n among_o we_o the_o great_a increase_n of_o all_o manner_n of_o wickedness_n the_o multiply_v of_o error_n schism_n and_o division_n have_v no_o one_o more_o visible_a cause_n than_o this_o and_o till_o man_n be_v convince_v that_o they_o own_o a_o great_a respect_n to_o their_o spiritual_a guide_n than_o their_o practice_n carry_v in_o it_o and_o will_v be_v persuade_v to_o follow_v the_o advice_n i_o have_v now_o give_v they_o i_o can_v hope_v to_o see_v any_o stop_v put_v to_o these_o evil_n i_o beseech_v thou_o therefore_o my_o brother_n by_o all_o that_o be_v dear_a to_o thou_o not_o to_o despise_v my_o counsel_n defer_v not_o to_o make_v choice_n of_o a_o guide_n and_o when_o thou_o have_v do_v be_v not_o slack_a to_o desire_v his_o advice_n nor_o backward_o to_o follow_v it_o thou_o may_v be_v confident_a of_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n in_o so_o do_v thy_o guide_n be_v particular_o concern_v to_o give_v thou_o the_o best_a advice_n he_o can_v and_o god_n be_v concern_v to_o make_v it_o effectual_a for_o thy_o good_a since_o he_o have_v particular_o ordain_v it_o for_o that_o end_n to_o these_o direction_n i_o may_v add_v many_o more_o viz._n that_o thou_o will_v do_v well_o to_o endear_v thyself_o to_o thy_o guide_n as_o much_o as_o thou_o can_v that_o he_o may_v take_v the_o great_a care_n of_o thou_o and_o be_v more_o ardent_o desirous_a of_o thy_o salvation_n to_o which_o purpose_n thou_o may_v do_v well_o to_o show_v thy_o esteem_n of_o he_o by_o a_o respectful_a carriage_n before_o other_o real_a moun_n de_fw-fr real_a there_o be_v a_o great_a and_o good_a man_n once_o in_o the_o world_n that_o will_v never_o take_v place_n of_o a_o priest_n before_o the_o people_n the_o dignity_n of_o the_o office_n require_v as_o he_o believe_v and_o deserve_v the_o high_a respect_n and_o if_o any_o one_o say_v that_o he_o be_v not_o of_o our_o church_n i_o answer_v the_o great_a reason_n have_v most_o of_o we_o to_o be_v ashamed_a of_o ourselves_o who_o call_v ourselves_o reform_v and_o do_v worse_o and_o further_o thou_o may_v do_v well_o to_o contribute_v cheerful_o according_a to_o thy_o ability_n towards_o his_o maintenance_n if_o the_o be_v not_o plentiful_o provide_v for_o the_o primitive_a christian_n be_v not_o backward_o to_o do_v this_o as_o thou_o may_v perceive_v by_o their_o devote_v all_o that_o they_o have_v to_o the_o service_n of_o christ_n and_o his_o church_n act._n 4.34_o 35._o and_o i_o wish_v i_o can_v not_o say_v that_o the_o sacrilege_n of_o many_o that_o call_v themselves_o christian_n in_o endeavour_n and_o to_o who_o goodness_n and_o mercy_n thou_o must_v daily_o ascribe_v all_o the_o benefit_n thou_o do_v receive_v by_o they_o but_o i_o must_v forbear_v have_v too_o far_o exceed_v my_o bound_n already_o i_o conclude_v all_o with_o the_o word_n of_o our_o there_fw-mi lord_n and_o saviour_n now_o thou_o know_v these_o thing_n happy_a art_n thou_o if_o thou_o do_v they_o john_n thereby_o and_o increase_v in_o like_a manner_n it_o may_v seem_v expedient_a to_o lay_v open_a the_o sin_n of_o our_o life_n and_o the_o evil_a affection_n of_o the_o mind_n that_o it_o may_v be_v to_o imply_v a_o mutual_a confession_n to_o be_v make_v by_o christian_n to_o each_o other_o yet_o if_o the_o use_v of_o the_o phrase_n in_o other_o place_n be_v consider_v and_o particular_o in_o that_o of_o st._n peter_n 1._o epist_n chap._n 5.5_o v._o all_o of_o you_o be_v subject_a to_o one_o another_o which_o must_v be_v understand_v according_a to_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o matter_n there_o speak_v of_o not_o of_o a_o mutual_a subjection_n but_o of_o a_o subjection_n of_o all_o to_o those_o that_o be_v over_o they_o they_o will_v be_v but_o of_o little_a weight_n against_o it_o grant_v he_o that_o little_a that_o very_o little_a ease_n which_o so_o small_a a_o favour_n will_v have_v give_v he_o be_v deny_v he_o which_o sad_a story_n plain_o show_v we_o that_o the_o torment_n of_o the_o wicked_a have_v no_o intermission_n nor_o decrease_v and_o that_o those_o who_o suffer_v they_o shall_v never_o obtain_v the_o least_o help_n or_o ease_n though_o they_o want_v it_o most_o extreme_o and_o seek_v for_o it_o with_o the_o great_a earnestness_n and_o importunity_n they_o shall_v be_v like_a to_o a_o man_n that_o be_v almost_o drown_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o the_o sea_n who_o not_o find_v any_o firm_a ground_n whereupon_o to_o set_v his_o foot_n stretch_v out_o his_o hand_n every_o way_n and_o grasp_v at_o something_o with_o all_o his_o may_v but_o still_o in_o vain_a because_o there_o be_v nothing_o but_o water_n round_o about_o he_o thus_o will_v it_o be_v with_o those_o wretch_n in_o hell_n they_o be_v drown_v in_o a_o bottomless_a gulf_n of_o unspeakable_a misery_n and_o they_o look_v every_o way_n for_o help_n and_o strive_v for_o a_o little_a ease_n but_o alas_o to_o no_o purpose_n for_o there_o be_v nothing_o but_o sorrow_n and_o misery_n and_o pain_n and_o horror_n round_o about_o they_o and_o thus_o it_o shall_v be_v with_o they_o not_o for_o a_o little_a time_n for_o a_o month_n or_o a_o year_n but_o for_o ever_o and_o ever_o which_o be_v a_o three_o thing_n i_o desire_v thou_o to_o observe_v 3._o their_o pain_n and_o torment_n will_v be_v endless_a as_o well_o as_o easless_o and_o when_o they_o have_v endure_v they_o without_o any_o intermission_n or_o decrease_v as_o many_o year_n nay_o age_n as_o there_o be_v stare_v in_o the_o firmament_n or_o sand_n upon_o the_o seashore_n they_o shall_v still_o be_v to_o endure_v they_o in_o the_o very_a same_o manner_n as_o many_o more_o as_o many_o more_o do_v i_o say_v yea_o ten_o thousand_o more_o they_o shall_v endure_v they_o as_o long_o as_o there_o be_v a_o just_a and_o holy_a god_n to_o punish_v they_o that_o be_v to_o eternal_a age_n this_o be_v but_o what_o god_n himself_o have_v tell_v we_o in_o plain_a word_n for_o thus_o shall_v the_o sad_a sentence_n run_v at_o the_o great_a day_n depart_v from_o i_o you_o curse_v into_o everlasting_a fire_n and_o the_o execution_n will_v be_v according_o as_o we_o be_v tell_v math._n 25._o the_o last_o v._o the_o wicked_a shall_v go_v into_o everlasting_a punishment_n into_o punishment_n that_o shall_v be_v as_o lasting_a as_o the_o reward_n of_o the_o righteous_a which_o will_v be_v as_o lasting_a as_o god_n himself_o these_o be_v dreadful_a consideration_n my_o dear_a christian_a brother_n and_o he_o must_v be_v a_o strange_a kind_n of_o man_n indeed_o and_o have_v a_o heart_n hard_a than_o the_o adamant_n that_o be_v not_o mighty_o affect_v with_o they_o there_o be_v but_o few_o man_n so_o hardy_a as_o to_o think_v upon_o the_o plague_n and_o judgement_n of_o almighty_a god_n upon_o sinful_a man_n in_o this_o world_n without_o some_o fear_n especial_o when_o they_o think_v of_o they_o as_o hang_v over_o their_o own_o head_n and_o apprehend_v themselves_o to_o be_v in_o danger_n of_o they_o and_o how_o then_o can_v they_o choose_v but_o tremble_v at_o those_o of_o another_o world_n which_o be_v infinite_o more_o dreadful_a than_o the_o worst_a of_o these_o the_o evil_n of_o the_o world_n be_v particular_a evil_n they_o afflict_v but_o one_o or_o some_o few_o part_n at_o once_o one_o disease_n seize_v upon_o one_o part_n and_o another_o upon_o another_o part_n in_o one_o disease_n one_o sense_n be_v pain_v and_o in_o another_o another_o sense_n but_o never_o be_v all_o the_o part_n and_o all_o the_o sense_n at_o one_o and_o the_o same_o time_n under_o torment_n and_o pain_n in_o this_o world_n there_o be_v no_o evil_a so_o great_a but_o it_o have_v it_o decrease_v and_o change_n and_o therefore_o no_o man_n can_v be_v so_o miserable_a but_o he_o will_v sometime_o have_v some_o respite_n and_o ease_v and_o let_v the_o evil_n be_v never_o so_o sharp_a and_o press_a yet_o the_o comfort_n of_o hope_n will_v not_o be_v want_v and_o the_o foresight_n of_o a_o certain_a end_n will_v be_v a_o great_a relief_n and_o yet_o notwithstanding_o this_o we_o many_o time_n think_v the_o evil_n of_o this_o world_n to_o be_v intolerable_a and_o as_o sweet_a a_o thing_n as_o life_n be_v to_o we_o we_o wish_v for_o death_n to_o deliver_v we_o from_o they_o o_o how_o intolerable_a then_o must_v the_o torment_n of_o the_o other_o world_n be_v which_o spare_v no_o part_n or_o faculty_n of_o body_n or_o soul_n which_o give_v not_o the_o least_o ease_n nor_o admit_v of_o the_o least_o decrease_n no_o not_o for_o one_o minute_n which_o exclude_v all_o hope_n of_o a_o end_n and_o overwhelm_v the_o soul_n to_o utter_v despair_n of_o the_o least_o remedy_n let_v our_o charity_n lead_v we_o sometime_o to_o visit_v a_o poor_a sick_a creature_n and_o let_v we_o observe_v what_o pain_n and_o agony_n he_o endure_v for_o one_o night_n mark_v how_o often_o he_o toss_v and_o tumble_v from_o one_o side_n of_o his_o bed_n to_o the_o other_o hear_v how_o he_o groan_v and_o what_o bitter_a complaint_n he_o
make_v observe_v how_o he_o count_v the_o hour_n of_o the_o clock_n and_o how_o long_o he_o think_v each_o hour_n to_o be_v how_o passionate_o he_o wish_v for_o the_o dawn_v of_o the_o day_n and_o how_o tedious_a the_o night_n seem_v unto_o he_o this_o we_o look_v upon_o as_o a_o sad_a spectacle_n and_o if_o we_o have_v any_o bowel_n in_o we_o they_o can_v but_o melt_v at_o it_o and_o when_o we_o consider_v that_o it_o may_v be_v short_o our_o own_o case_n we_o be_v very_o sensible_o touch_v with_o it_o o_o what_o shall_v we_o think_v then_o of_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o damn_a how_o deplorable_a and_o how_o miserable_a must_v we_o needs_o believe_v that_o to_o be_v to_o be_v torment_v in_o every_o member_n of_o the_o body_n and_o every_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n with_o the_o sharp_a and_o most_o exquisite_a torment_n and_o without_o the_o least_o ease_n or_o respite_n and_o this_o not_o for_o a_o night_n of_o some_o few_o hour_n but_o for_o a_o everlasting_a night_n a_o night_n that_o have_v nomorning_o and_o know_v no_o hope_n of_o any_o dawn_v of_o the_o day_n to_o lie_v in_o such_o a_o night_n not_o upon_o a_o loft_n bed_n as_o the_o sick_a man_n do_v but_o in_o a_o bed_n of_o flame_n or_o a_o hot_a burn_a furnace_n not_o at_o liberty_n to_o turn_v to_o and_o fro_o and_o to_o seek_v ease_n but_o bind_v hand_n and_o foot_n not_o with_o the_o company_n of_o compassionate_a friend_n assist_v and_o comfort_v to_o the_o best_a of_o their_o power_n but_o with_o the_o horrid_a company_n of_o the_o damn_a and_o accurse_a spirit_n that_o shall_v add_v to_o their_o suffering_n and_o their_o sorrow_n as_o much_o as_o their_o power_n and_o malice_n can_v possible_o do_v this_o must_v be_v misery_n in_o the_o height_n in_o its_o full_a perfection_n if_o i_o not_o of_o but_o if_o we_o understand_v and_o believe_v these_o thing_n why_o do_v we_o not_o tremble_v at_o the_o thought_n of_o they_o why_o do_v we_o not_o bethink_v ourselves_o how_o we_o may_v escape_v they_o why_o do_v we_o not_o abhor_v that_o sin_n and_o wickedness_n which_o will_v bring_v we_o to_o they_o why_o do_v we_o not_o apply_v ourselves_o with_o all_o our_o might_n and_o all_o our_o care_n to_o the_o practice_n of_o that_o piety_n and_o virtue_n which_o alone_o through_o god_n mercy_n can_v deliver_v we_o from_o they_o it_o be_v a_o amaze_a thing_n my_o brother_n that_o these_o thing_n shall_v make_v so_o little_a impression_n upon_o the_o generality_n of_o man_n as_o we_o find_v they_o do_v and_o but_o that_o the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o of_o a_o god_n of_o this_o world_n that_o blind_v the_o eye_n and_o harden_v the_o heart_n of_o man_n and_o make_v they_o inconsiderate_a as_o brute_n we_o shall_v be_v at_o a_o loss_n to_o give_v any_o account_n of_o it_o we_o see_v that_o they_o be_v apprehensive_a enough_o of_o evil_n in_o this_o world_n and_o industrious_a enough_o to_o avoid_v it_o if_o any_o evil_a be_v great_a though_o it_o be_v remote_a they_o dread_v it_o and_o though_o it_o be_v come_v be_v uncertain_a yet_o they_o take_v care_n to_o prevent_v it_o but_o alas_o as_o to_o these_o unspeakable_a evil_n and_o calamity_n they_o be_v stupid_a and_o inconsiderate_a as_o block_n the_o least_o fear_n of_o they_o be_v full_a enough_o and_o the_o least_o care_n and_o pain_n to_o avoid_v they_o be_v think_v too_o much_o sure_o brother_n there_o be_v a_o time_n when_o they_o have_v great_a effect_n upon_o the_o world_n than_o now_o they_o have_v when_o man_n think_v they_o can_v not_o be_v possess_v with_o too_o great_a fear_n of_o they_o nor_o take_v too_o much_o care_n and_o pain_n to_o escape_v they_o let_v i_o show_v thou_o what_o a_o devout_a father_n have_v write_v concern_v some_o penitent_n he_o once_o see_v in_o a_o monastery_n and_o then_o judge_v what_o insluence_n these_o thing_n have_v have_v heretofore_o upon_o man_n 9_o st._n j._n climac_n 9_o and_o what_o they_o ought_v in_o reason_n to_o have_v now_o when_o first_o i_o come_v into_o this_o monastery_n say_v he_o i_o behold_v certain_a thing_n which_o neither_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o sluggard_n have_v ever_o see_v nor_o the_o ear_n of_o the_o negligent_a hear_v nor_o yet_o may_v it_o be_v conceive_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o any_o careless_a and_o retchless_n christian_n and_o afterward_o he_o tell_v we_o how_o he_o see_v many_o penitent_n stand_v with_o their_o eye_n fix_v towards_o heaven_n continual_o call_v upon_o almighty_a god_n with_o tear_n and_o sigh_n for_o pardon_n and_o mercy_n other_o again_o he_o see_v that_o process_v they_o be_v unto_o worthy_a to_o listen_v up_o their_o eye_n towards_o heaven_n or_o to_o speak_v to_o almighty_a god_n and_o these_o hold_v their_o face_n down_o towards_o the_o ground_n offer_v their_o soul_n in_o silence_n to_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n without_o speak_v so_o much_o as_o one_o word_n as_o man_n that_o have_v be_v dumb_a full_a of_o fear_n and_o confusion_n other_o be_v clothe_v in_o sack_n and_o hair-cloath_n and_o kneel_v with_o their_o face_n bow_v down_o to_o their_o knee_n and_o smite_v their_o forehead_n oftentine_n upon_o the_o earth_n do_v bathe_v the_o very_a earth_n with_o their_o tear_n and_o those_o that_o want_v tear_n do_v lament_v very_o grievous_o because_o they_o want_v they_o and_o after_o this_o he_o tell_v we_o that_o they_o have_v poor_a people_n sore_n etc._n etc._n which_o man_n of_o a_o nice_a and_o squeamish_a sense_n will_v hardly_o be_v persuade_v to_o perform_v mortify_v thy_o passion_n likewise_o and_o keep_v they_o strict_o within_o their_o bound_n for_o as_o he_o be_v a_o beast_n that_o be_v a_o slave_n to_o sense_n so_o be_v he_o a_o fool_n that_o be_v govern_v by_o his_o passion_n in_o one_o word_n consider_v thyself_o well_o mark_v thy_o temper_n thy_o inclination_n and_o affection_n and_o keep_v thyself_o and_o they_o under_o constant_a discipline_n and_o correction_n have_v thou_o a_o trifle_a wanton_a spirit_n be_v thou_o much_o delight_v with_o the_o raillery_n drollery_n sport_n and_o jesting_n of_o wanton_a fancy_n and_o loose_a tongue_n fail_v not_o i_o beseech_v thou_o to_o restrain_v thy_o inclination_n avoid_v the_o company_n of_o light_n and_o vain_a person_n and_o turn_v away_o thy_o thought_n from_o trivial_a matter_n to_o the_o concernment_n of_o a_o soul_n that_o must_v short_o buffoon_n or_o stage-player_n it_o be_v the_o grief_n of_o a_o devout_a man_n many_o year_n ago_o st._n bernard_n to_o observe_v the_o lightness_n laughter_n and_o security_n of_o many_o christian_n coarse_a fare_n fast_o often_o lie_v hard_o go_v frequent_o to_o the_o house_n of_o mourn_v and_o keep_v he_o continual_o in_o thy_o eye_n who_o after_o a_o life_n of_o continue_a travel_n in_o do_v good_a have_v no_o easy_a a_o bed_n than_o a_o cross_n to_o rest_v upon_o do_v the_o riches_n of_o the_o world_n please_v thou_o refuse_v they_o when_o they_o be_v offer_v or_o let_v the_o hand_n of_o liberality_n immediate_o distribute_v they_o to_o those_o that_o want_v they_o and_o keep_v in_o mind_n those_o good_a man_n who_o thy_o bible_n tell_v thou_o of_o who_o though_o they_o can_v have_v enrich_v themselves_o by_o miracle_n yet_o continue_v poor_a and_o have_v not_o so_o much_o as_o a_o house_n to_o put_v their_o head_n in_o do_v worldly_a honour_n tickle_v thou_o and_o the_o the_o practice_n of_o those_o virtue_n which_o be_v most_o unfashionable_a and_o which_o the_o generality_n of_o man_n have_v a_o mean_a opinion_n of_o and_o forget_v not_o that_o there_o be_v a_o person_n once_o in_o the_o world_n who_o be_v able_a to_o have_v govern_v the_o whole_a world_n that_o lead_v the_o great_a part_n of_o his_o life_n in_o the_o countrey-village_n and_o among_o poor_a people_n and_o will_v not_o have_v his_o great_a and_o mighty_a work_n to_o be_v public_o speak_v of_o this_o be_v to_o practice_v self-denial_n and_o by_o these_o and_o the_o like_a practice_n thou_o will_v in_o a_o short_a time_n arrive_v at_o that_o perfect_a resignation_n to_o which_o i_o desire_v to_o lead_v thou_o but_o then_o in_o the_o last_o place_n 4._o be_v sure_a that_o in_o these_o practice_n and_o in_o whatever_o else_o thou_o do_v thou_o take_v nothing_o to_o thyself_o but_o refer_v thyself_o and_o all_o to_o almighty_a god_n thou_o may_v begin_v well_o my_o brother_n viz._n thing_n so_o much_o against_o thou_o that_o thou_o need_v so_o much_o invitation_n and_o persuasion_n to_o it_o o_o my_o soul_n my_o foolish_a soul_n may_v thou_o say_v what_o can_v thou_o say_v for_o thyself_o in_o this_o case_n be_v there_o any_o excuse_n for_o thy_o folly_n any_o plea_n for_o thy_o wickedness_n no_o far_o be_v it_o from_o thou_o to_o seek_v for_o any_o let_v we_o rather_o not_o admit_v they_o without_o some_o little_a stop_n as_o require_v a_o full_a application_n of_o thy_o mind_n yet_o that_o stop_n will_v be_v no_o hindrance_n but_o rather_o a_o mighty_a furtherance_n to_o they_o for_o while_o thou_o do_v thus_o look_v up_o to_o god_n upon_o who_o the_o success_n of_o every_o thing_n depend_v thou_o will_v be_v able_a to_o proceed_v more_o cheerful_o in_o thy_o employment_n and_o with_o great_a vigour_n through_o the_o confidence_n of_o his_o blessing_n upon_o all_o that_o thou_o be_v a_o do_v but_o there_o be_v one_o advice_n more_o which_o much_o to_o be_v say_v but_o because_o i_o have_v set_v myself_o but_o short_a bound_n and_o because_o i_o hope_v that_o thou_o be_v well_o dispose_v by_o the_o forego_n discourse_n to_o receive_v good_a counsel_n i_o shall_v be_v as_o brief_a as_o possible_o i_o can_v with_o respect_n to_o thy_o good_n there_o be_v three_o or_o four_o thing_n which_o be_v well_o know_v to_o christian_n and_o i_o hope_v they_o will_v be_v ready_o acknowledge_v by_o thou_o for_o great_a truth_n which_o be_v well_o consider_v by_o thou_o will_v let_v thou_o know_v both_o how_o necessary_a and_o how_o to_o they_o and_o this_o he_o tell_v they_o viz._n their_o make_v their_o account_n sad_a and_o grievous_a by_o their_o non-submission_n will_v be_v unprofitable_a for_o they_o he_o mean_v more_o than_o his_o word_n express_v according_a to_o a_o way_n of_o speak_v very_o usual_a in_o the_o scripture_n i.e._n this_o will_v be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v profitable_a for_o they_o man_n that_o it_o will_v bring_v the_o great_a damage_n and_o mischief_n to_o they_o viz_o the_o ruin_n and_o perdition_n of_o their_o soul_n i_o forbear_v to_o mention_v any_o more_o place_n of_o scripture_n and_o i_o omit_v to_o urge_v the_o practice_n of_o the_o first_o and_o best_a christian_n as_o also_o the_o black_a character_n that_o be_v give_v by_o some_o of_o the_o holy_a writer_n of_o those_o that_o do_v slight_v the_o guide_n and_o governor_n of_o the_o church_n and_o refuse_v to_o submit_v themselves_o unto_o they_o because_o i_o have_v promise_v not_o to_o be_v tedious_a now_o have_v careful_o observe_v and_o serious_o weigh_v these_o thing_n give_v i_o leave_v to_o put_v some_o few_o question_n brief_o to_o thou_o do_v thou_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o these_o spiritual_a guide_n in_o the_o world_n if_o there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o they_o why_o do_v christ_n appoint_v they_o why_o do_v he_o not_o leave_v man_n to_o themselves_o in_o the_o concern_v of_o their_o soul_n as_o he_o have_v do_v in_o those_o thing_n that_o concern_v their_o body_n and_o their_o outward_a estate_n for_o that_o he_o have_v not_o appoint_v any_o order_n of_o man_n to_o teach_v man_n how_o to_o provide_v for_o their_o body_n or_o to_o increase_v their_o estate_n be_v confess_v by_o all_o be_v there_o need_v of_o these_o guide_n for_o the_o first_o preach_v of_o christianity_n to_o the_o world_n and_o be_v there_o no_o need_n of_o they_o for_o the_o propagation_n and_o maintenance_n of_o it_o in_o the_o world_n i_o forbear_v to_o press_v thou_o with_o the_o natural_a blindness_n of_o man_n understanding_n with_o that_o inconsideration_n rashness_n levity_n inconstancy_n which_o be_v inseparable_a tof_o humane_a nature_n 〈◊〉_d also_o with_o that_o averseness_n to_o the_o thing_n of_o god_n and_o the_o great_a interest_n of_o our_o soul_n which_o all_o man_n feel_v and_o good_a man_n can_v but_o complain_v of_o we_o may_v be_v confident_a that_o if_o christ_n have_v not_o know_v that_o the_o world_n need_v spiritual_a guide_n he_o will_v never_o have_v appoint_v any_o such_o nor_o have_v promise_v they_o those_o assistance_n which_o thou_o have_v now_o hear_v of_o nor_o have_v take_v any_o care_n to_o inform_v man_n of_o the_o duty_n they_o do_v owe_v unto_o they_o and_o therefore_o be_v not_o those_o man_n too_o much_o puff_v up_o in_o their_o fleshly_a mind_n or_o too_o regardless_o of_o their_o everlasting_a interest_n that_o account_v these_o guide_n to_o be_v of_o no_o use_n to_o they_o or_o be_v want_v in_o that_o respect_n for_o they_o and_o dependence_n upon_o they_o which_o they_o ought_v to_o have_v i_o doubt_v not_o but_o thou_o will_v confess_v it_o but_o further_a do_v thou_o not_o understand_v by_o what_o have_v be_v say_v that_o man_n may_v receive_v very_o great_a advantage_n by_o their_o spiritual_a guide_n if_o they_o please_v themselves_o sure_o those_o of_o old_a that_o receive_v they_o as_o the_o galatian_n do_v chap._n 4.14_o as_o the_o angel_n of_o god_n yea_o even_o as_o christ_n jesus_n do_v believe_v so_o beside_o be_v not_o the_o make_n of_o this_o provision_n for_o the_o good_a of_o man_n soul_n a_o great_a demonstration_n of_o christ_n love_n and_o care_n for_o they_o and_o therefore_o must_v not_o they_o be_v great_a despiser_n of_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n and_o enemy_n to_o their_o own_o soul_n that_o make_v little_a account_n of_o it_o and_o seek_v no_o advantage_n by_o it_o or_o can_v they_o with_o the_o least_o shadow_n of_o reason_n call_v themselves_o christian_n or_o expect_v to_o be_v partaker_n of_o those_o benefit_n which_o he_o have_v promise_v to_o his_o faithful_a servant_n who_o have_v no_o regard_n at_o all_o to_o his_o ordinance_n and_o institution_n or_o no_o other_o regard_n to_o they_o than_o as_o they_o please_v their_o own_o humour_n and_o be_v agreeable_a to_o their_o stubborn_a will_n i_o doubt_v not_o but_o thou_o will_v answer_v to_o these_o demand_n according_a to_o my_o heart_n desire_v and_o therefore_o thou_o can_v not_o but_o acknowledge_v that_o my_o advice_n be_v good_a and_o useful_a that_o thou_o commit_v thy_o soul_n to_o the_o care_n and_o conduct_v of_o a_o spiritual_a guide_n i_o proceed_v now_o to_o show_v thou_o brief_o how_o thou_o must_v practice_v this_o advice_n the_o practice_n of_o the_o former_a advice_n 1._o thou_o must_v make_v choice_n of_o a_o good_a guide_n i_o call_v he_o a_o good_a guide_n who_o have_v authority_n from_o christ_n be_v able_a to_o direct_v thou_o aright_o in_o all_o the_o concern_v of_o thy_o soul_n and_o will_v be_v faithful_a to_o thou_o christ_n have_v no_o where_o promise_v that_o none_o shall_v take_v upon_o they_o to_o be_v guide_n of_o soul_n but_o those_o that_o have_v authority_n from_o he_o nor_o that_o all_o those_o that_o have_v authority_n from_o he_o shall_v discharge_v their_o office_n faithful_o among_o his_o twelve_o apostle_n there_o be_v a_o judas_n and_o among_o the_o seven_o deacon_n ordain_v by_o the_o apostle_n tradition_n tell_v we_o there_o be_v one_o that_o fail_v and_o in_o those_o write_n that_o we_o have_v of_o some_o of_o the_o apostle_n we_o find_v complaint_n of_o some_o that_o love_v the_o world_n more_o than_o christ_n and_o their_o own_o fleshly_a lust_n more_o than_o the_o good_a of_o soul_n and_o st._n peter_n have_v tell_v we_o that_o as_o there_o be_v of_o old_a false_a prophet_n among_o god_n people_n so_o there_o shall_v be_v false_a teacher_n among_o christian_n who_o through_o covetousness_n shall_v with_o feign_a word_n make_v merchandise_n of_o they_o 2_o pet._n 2.1_o 2_o 3._o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v no_o matter_n of_o wonder_n if_o there_o be_v some_o such_o among_o we_o now_o but_o it_o ought_v to_o be_v matter_n of_o caution_n to_o thou_o with_o who_o thou_o do_v trust_v thy_o soul_n thy_o soul_n be_v a_o jewel_n of_o too_o great_a value_n to_o be_v put_v into_o the_o hand_n of_o every_o be_v the_o author_n and_o promoter_n of_o thou_o will_v know_v how_o to_o judge_v of_o their_o great_a boast_n and_o godly_a pretension_n by_o these_o their_o truit_n thou_o may_v know_v they_o i_o for_o their_o good_a and_o submit_v himself_o patient_o and_o quiet_o to_o the_o authority_n of_o the_o chief_a priest_n and_o of_o the_o roman_a emperor_n 5._o he_o be_v very_o grave_a and_o serious_a not_o out_o of_o soureness_n or_o sullenness_n of_o humour_n but_o from_o a_o real_a sense_n of_o the_o sacredness_n of_o his_o office_n the_o worth_a of_o soul_n and_o the_o account_v he_o must_v give_v of_o they_o it_o be_v say_v of_o a_o devout_a man_n that_o when_o some_o desire_v he_o to_o give_v they_o a_o certain_a mark_n by_o which_o they_o may_v know_v a_o man_n to_o be_v true_o spiritual_a he_o answer_v they_o in_o this_o manner_n if_o you_o see_v any_o one_o that_o take_v delight_n in_o the_o common_a sport_n and_o jesting_n the_o raillery_n and_o drollery_n of_o the_o world_n that_o can_v patient_o suffer_v contempt_n and_o reproach_n take_v heed_n that_o you_o believe_v not_o that_o man_n to_o be_v spiritual_n though_o you_o shall_v see_v he_o work_v miracle_n this_o good_a man_n be_v undoubted_o in_o the_o right_n and_o i_o think_v lie_n have_v not_o be_v mistake_v if_o he_o have_v omit_v the_o latter_a part_n concern_v the_o not_o suffer_v contempt_n and_o give_v the_o affectation_n of_o wit_n and_o drollery_n for_o a_o sufficient_a mark_n of_o a_o very_a imperfect_a christian_a however_o it_o may_v serve_v for_o a_o mark_n to_o discover_v a_o bad_a guide_n for_o if_o every_o christian_a shall_v be_v a_o serious_a persono_fw-it because_o christ_n be_v so_o the_o ambassador_n of_o christ_n shall_v be_v much_o more_o so_o their_o deportment_n shall_v be_v such_o as_o may_v awe_v the_o man_n they_o do_v converse_v with_o and_o in_o a_o silent_a way_n deter_v they_o from_o their_o sin_n and_o their_o person_n shall_v speak_v what_o the_o statue_n of_o senacherib_n be_v say_v to_o have_v do_v he_o who_o look_v to_o i_o let_v he_o be_v religious_a but_o though_o a_o good_a guide_n be_v thus_o grave_a and_o serious_a yet_o he_o be_v not_o crabbed_a morose_n or_o cynical_a but_o 6._o affable_a and_o courteous_a and_o of_o sweet_a and_o winning_n conversation_n he_o disdain_v not_o to_o converse_v with_o the_o mean_a people_n and_o that_o free_o and_o cheerful_o too_o nor_o to_o conform_v himself_o to_o all_o the_o innocent_a custom_n of_o the_o world_n so_o far_o as_o consist_v with_o the_o sacredness_n of_o his_o office_n and_o the_o decorum_n of_o his_o person_n have_v a_o due_a respect_n to_o those_o he_o become_v all_o thing_n to_o all_o man_n and_o though_o his_o gravity_n show_v he_o to_o be_v a_o enemy_n to_o their_o sin_n yet_o his_o innocent_a and_o cheerful_a compliance_n show_v he_o to_o be_v a_o lover_n of_o their_o person_n there_o be_v never_o any_o person_n more_o remarkable_a for_o this_o than_o our_o bless_a saviour_n who_o though_o his_o gravity_n be_v such_o that_o he_o be_v never_o see_v to_o laugh_v as_o we_o know_v of_o yet_o be_v he_o of_o so_o sweet_a and_o benign_a a_o temper_n and_o so_o courteous_a and_o compliant_a in_o all_o his_o carriage_n and_o conversation_n that_o none_o be_v ever_o offend_v at_o it_o &_o to_o his_o example_n do_v every_o good_a guide_n of_o soul_n conform_v himself_o in_o this_o as_o well_o as_o in_o other_o thing_n 7._o he_o be_v a_o man_n of_o courage_n he_o fear_v not_o the_o face_n of_o the_o great_a person_n upon_o earth_n nor_o be_v discourage_v in_o the_o do_n of_o his_o duty_n by_o the_o thought_n of_o their_o displeasure_n he_o be_v another_o john_n the_o baptist_n in_o this_o respect_n who_o be_v not_o afraid_a to_o tell_v the_o tyrant_n herod_n that_o it_o be_v not_o lawful_a for_o he_o to_o have_v his_o brother_n wife_n mar._n 16.18_o and_o like_o st._n paul_n he_o can_v be_v content_v if_o god_n will_v have_v it_o
