for_o it_o be_v true_a that_o he_o that_o injure_v forgive_v not_o we_o therefore_o have_v so_o much_o offend_v god_n can_v hardly_o forgive_v he_o that_o be_v believe_v that_o he_o will_v forgive_v we_o he_o therefore_o to_o satisfy_v and_o cure_v our_o infidelity_n give_v we_o his_o only_a son_n to_o die_v for_o we_o to_o give_v we_o a_o infallible_a testimony_n of_o his_o love_n the_o know_v that_o ever_o i_o read_v any_o story_n equal_a to_o this_o which_o be_v record_v by_o josephus_n of_o the_o martyrdom_n of_o the_o seven_o son_n of_o one_o mother_n i_o think_v good_a to_o insert_v this_o story_n which_o though_o as_o for_o the_o substance_n of_o it_o it_o be_v in_o the_o book_n of_o macchabee_n yet_o be_v exceed_v more_o large_a in_o josephus_n i_o have_v transcribe_v it_o out_o of_o he_o and_o the_o rather_o do_v i_o set_v down_o this_o story_n because_o general_o expositor_n do_v think_v that_o the_o apostle_n in_o hebrew_n 11.35_o have_v relation_n to_o the_o suffering_n of_o these_o worthy_a martyr_n and_o it_o be_v thus_o antiochus_n who_o the_o prophet_n daniel_n call_v a_o vile_a person_n dan._n 11.21_o after_o he_o have_v martyr_a eleazar_n a_o man_n of_o great_a age_n reverence_n piety_n and_o constancy_n cause_v seven_o brethren_n who_o be_v bring_v up_o and_o instruct_v by_o that_o bless_a forenamed_a martyr_n eleazar_n to_o be_v bring_v forth_o to_o martyrdom_n the_o tyrant_n behold_v they_o and_o their_o mother_n among_o they_o with_o merry_a and_o gladsome_a countenance_n he_o thus_o speak_v unto_o the_o child_n i_o wish_v your_o good_a o_o admirable_a young_a man_n for_o so_o both_o your_o beauty_n of_o body_n and_o noble_a parentage_n persuade_v i_o do_v not_o therefore_o like_o mad_a man_n resist_v my_o command_n avoid_v not_o only_a torment_n but_o death_n also_o for_o i_o desire_v not_o only_o to_o exalt_v you_o unto_o honour_n but_o also_o to_o increase_v your_o riches_n and_o possession_n contemn_v the_o his_o brethren_n o_o belove_a brethren_n learn_v by_o i_o a_o example_n of_o constancy_n contemn_v and_o despise_v the_o allure_a bait_n of_o this_o world_n and_o rather_o obey_v god_n than_o antiochus_n who_o can_v if_o he_o please_v humble_v the_o proud_a and_o mighty_a and_o exalt_v the_o lowly_a and_o deject_a as_o thus_o he_o speak_v he_o be_v take_v out_o of_o the_o flame_n and_o as_o he_o may_v abide_v great_a torment_n for_o he_o be_v cast_v before_o a_o cruel_a libbard_n thirst_v most_o extreme_o after_o blood_n to_o the_o intent_n that_o he_o may_v devour_v with_o his_o tooth_n the_o rest_n of_o his_o body_n but_o the_o beast_n smell_v of_o he_o forget_v his_o cruelty_n and_o turn_v away_o his_o face_n he_o do_v no_o hurt_n to_o the_o martyr_n but_o hereat_o the_o tyrantsrage_n increase_v and_o the_o martyr_n by_o suffer_v such_o torment_n be_v make_v more_o constant_a cry_v aloud_o o_o how_o pleasant_a be_v that_o death_n unto_o i_o which_o be_v cause_v by_o all_o sort_n of_o torment_n for_o god_n sake_n yea_o so_o much_o the_o more_o pleasant_a for_o that_o i_o assure_o hope_v to_o find_v reward_n for_o it_o in_o heaven_n let_v these_o torment_n inflict_v upon_o i_o o_o tyrant_n satisfy_v thy_o cruelty_n for_o my_o pain_n be_v not_o by_o thy_o torture_n increase_v but_o rather_o my_o pleasure_n as_o thou_o shall_v find_v by_o my_o patience_n in_o this_o agony_n more_o willing_a be_o i_o to_o suffer_v than_o thou_o to_o punish_v yea_o my_o pain_n in_o suffering_n be_v less_o than_o thou_o by_o inflict_v the_o same_o upon_o i_o i_o be_o torment_v for_o the_o truth_n and_o observe_v the_o law_n and_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n shall_v banish_v thou_o from_o thy_o regal_a seat_n thou_o by_o torment_a art_n torment_v and_o almost_o consume_v thy_o wrath_n and_o fury_n be_v almost_o spend_v upon_o i_o in_o vain_a thou_o shall_v not_o escape_v the_o day_n of_o judgement_n eternal_a pain_n be_v there_o prepare_v for_o thou_o which_o neither_o thy_o profane_a mind_n be_v able_a to_o endure_v nor_o thy_o cruelty_n of_o power_n to_o decline_v thy_o sinful_a soul_n be_v condemn_v to_o eternal_a punishment_n thus_o he_o remain_v constant_o in_o his_o faith_n and_o animate_v by_o his_o brother_n example_n depart_v unto_o heaven_n then_o the_o three_o son_n be_v bring_v who_o all_o pity_a for_o the_o death_n of_o his_o father_n beget_v we_o one_o mother_n do_v bear_v we_o one_o master_n instruct_v we_o we_o be_v all_o of_o one_o mind_n and_o all_o alike_o affect_v do_v therefore_o no_o long_o prolong_v the_o time_n in_o vain_a i_o come_v hither_o for_o to_o suffer_v and_o not_o to_o speak_v use_v all_o your_o tyranny_n possible_a against_o this_o body_n for_o you_o have_v no_o power_n at_o all_o over_o my_o soul_n the_o tyrant_n hereat_o move_v to_o see_v this_o three_o nothing_o relent_v by_o his_o brother_n death_n he_o devise_v more_o cruelty_n than_o humane_a wit_n alone_o can_v invent_v wherefore_o he_o command_v a_o globe_n to_o be_v bring_v and_o tie_v the_o holy_a martyr_n about_o it_o in_o such_o sort_n that_o all_o his_o bone_n be_v set_v out_o of_o joint_n and_o displace_v whereat_o the_o holy_a martyr_n be_v nothing_o dismay_v the_o skin_n also_o of_o his_o head_n and_o face_n be_v pull_v off_o and_o then_o he_o be_v put_v upon_o the_o wheel_n but_o he_o can_v not_o be_v rack_v any_o worse_a for_o that_o all_o his_o bone_n be_v displace_v and_o do_v hang_v one_o separate_v from_o another_o in_o most_o pitiful_a manner_n and_o when_o blood_n issue_v from_o he_o abundant_o he_o be_v deprive_v of_o the_o use_n of_o his_o hand_n and_o foot_n but_o perceive_v his_o life_n to_o be_v spend_v he_o speak_v thus_o and_o die_v we_o o_o tyrant_n endure_v this_o torment_n for_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o thou_o the_o author_n of_o such_o unjust_a cruelty_n shall_v suffer_v everlasting_a pain_n then_o his_o tongue_n be_v cut_v out_o of_o his_o mouth_n he_o be_v put_v into_o a_o frying-pan_n and_o so_o amid_o those_o torment_n yield_v up_o the_o ghost_n next_o after_o follow_v the_o four_o brother_n who_o all_o the_o people_n persuade_v and_o entreat_v to_o obey_v the_o king_n but_o he_o contemn_v their_o exhortation_n say_v thus_o with_o all_o constancy_n your_o fire_n shall_v not_o separate_v i_o from_o the_o law_n of_o god_n nor_o from_o my_o brethren_n who_o instead_o of_o this_o mortal_a life_n enjoy_v life_n everlasting_a i_o denounce_v unto_o thou_o o_o tyrant_n destruction_n and_o overthrow_n but_o to_o such_o as_o believe_v salvation_n make_v trial_n of_o i_o therefore_o and_o see_v if_o god_n will_v forsake_v i_o who_o have_v with_o open_a and_o stretch_v out_o arm_n receive_v my_o three_o brethren_n that_o be_v go_v before_o i_o and_o who_o the_o womb_n of_o so_o holy_a a_o mother_n at_o several_a time_n bring_v forth_o unto_o glory_n the_o cruel_a tyrant_n hear_v this_o be_v much_o move_v and_o leap_v down_o from_o his_o chair_n to_o torment_v this_o martyr_n himself_o that_o so_o he_o may_v overcome_v he_o and_o in_o his_o fury_n command_v his_o tongue_n to_o be_v cut_v out_o but_o he_o hereat_o not_o terrify_v say_v unto_o antiochus_n this_o cruelty_n will_v nothing_o avail_v thou_o neither_o shall_v thou_o hereby_o as_o thou_o suppose_v conquer_v i_o our_o god_n need_v not_o by_o voice_n to_o be_v awaken_v but_o rather_o by_o secret_a cogitation_n to_o be_v pray_v unto_o to_o help_v his_o servant_n and_o our_o god_n know_v all_o thing_n before_o we_o ask_v and_o before_o we_o ourselves_o enter_v into_o cogitation_n thereof_o he_o understand_v our_o necessity_n cut_v out_o my_o tongue_n thou_o can_v not_o cut_v out_o my_o mind_n while_o my_o life_n remain_v those_o prayer_n which_o by_o it_o i_o have_v utter_v to_o almighty_a god_n have_v teach_v it_o to_o suffer_v will_v god_n thou_o will_v so_o sanctify_v all_o part_n of_o my_o body_n by_o punish_v they_o for_o thou_o therein_o inflict_a punishment_n upon_o thyself_o and_o reward_n upon_o i_o and_o think_v not_o that_o thou_o shall_v thus_o escape_v long_o unpunished_a when_o he_o have_v thus_o speak_v his_o tongue_n be_v cut_v out_o become_v dead_a and_o wan_a be_v loose_v from_o thence_o he_o be_v put_v upon_o the_o wheel_n and_o then_o pray_v for_o the_o church_n of_o god_n he_o by_o death_n go_v unto_o the_o rest_n of_o his_o brethren_n then_o the_o five_o brother_n before_o he_o be_v hale_v to_o torment_n speak_v in_o this_o manner_n behold_v i_o come_v to_o be_v punish_v before_o thou_o command_v i_o hope_v not_o therefore_o any_o jot_n to_o alter_v his_o mind_n who_o as_o thou_o see_v desire_v to_o be_v torment_v the_o blood_n of_o my_o four_o innocent_a brethren_n which_o thou_o have_v shed_v have_v condemn_v thou_o to_o hell_n fire_n i_o be_o to_o make_v they_o up_o the_o number_n of_o five_o that_o by_o it_o thy_o pain_n may_v be_v increase_v tell_v i_o for_o what_o offence_n by_o we_o commit_v do_v thou_o thus_o punish_v we_o for_o what_o impiety_n do_v thou_o so_o persecute_v we_o what_o villainy_n have_v we_o commit_v what_o wickedness_n what_o naughtiness_n have_v we_o attempt_v this_o be_v all_o thou_o can_v allege_v against_o we_o that_o we_o honour_v god_n our_o creator_n and_o live_v just_o in_o obedience_n of_o his_o law_n and_o therefore_o do_v not_o esteem_v thy_o punishment_n but_o they_o be_v to_o we_o honour_n and_o salvation_n and_o not_o punishment_n we_o shall_v be_v great_o reward_v by_o god_n if_o no_o part_n of_o we_o be_v leave_v free_a from_o torment_n whilst_o thus_o he_o speak_v his_o executioner_n by_o the_o king_n command_n take_v he_o and_o cast_v he_o into_o a_o brazen_a pot_n and_o be_v press_v down_o in_o it_o his_o head_n to_o his_o foot_n and_o afterward_o he_o suffer_v all_o other_o torment_n which_o his_o brethren_n have_v endure_v yet_o not_o amaze_v hereat_o he_o sudden_o start_v up_o and_o thus_o he_o say_v cruel_a tyrant_n how_o great_a benefit_n do_v thou_o against_o thy_o will_n bestow_v upon_o we_o yea_o the_o more_o thou_o be_v incense_v against_o we_o the_o more_o acceptable_a to_o god_n shall_v thou_o make_v we_o yea_o i_o shall_v be_v sorry_a if_o thou_o shall_v show_v mercy_n upon_o i_o this_o short_a affliction_n gain_v we_o life_n everlasting_a if_o this_o temporal_a death_n shall_v not_o betide_v i_o everlasting_a life_n can_v not_o befall_v i_o and_o thus_o he_o finish_v his_o agony_n and_o die_v then_o the_o tormentor_n lay_v hand_n upon_o the_o six_o brother_n who_o be_v permit_v either_o to_o choose_v honour_n or_o else_o punishment_n but_o he_o aggrieve_v at_o his_o offer_n say_v although_o i_o be_v young_a in_o my_o year_n than_o my_o martyr_a brethren_n yet_o my_o
