desire_v these_o follow_v after_o righteousness_n 32._o but_o that_o fly_v from_o they_o wherefore_o they_o do_v not_o obtain_v it_o because_o they_o seek_v it_o not_o by_o faith_n in_o christ_n but_o as_o it_o be_v by_o the_o work_n the_o righteous_a good_a and_o holy_a work_n of_o the_o law_n but_o you_o add_v it_o be_v such_o a_o habit_n of_o mind_n such_o a_o frame_n and_o temper_v of_o soul_n as_o esteem_v god_n as_o the_o chief_a good_a and_o prefer_v he_o and_o his_o son_n jesus_n christ_n before_o all_o the_o world_n and_o that_o prize_v above_o all_o thing_n a_o interest_n in_o the_o divine_a perfection_n etc._n etc._n answ._n 1._o god_n must_v needs_o be_v esteem_v the_o chief_a good_a by_o all_o that_o have_v but_o and_o be_v rule_v by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n because_o they_o see_v he_o by_o his_o work_n to_o be_v almighty_a merciful_a 20._o and_o eternal_a but_o this_o may_v be_v where_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o man_n the_o mediator_n be_v not_o therefore_o this_o in_o this_o and_o in_o your_o sense_n can_v be_v of_o the_o essence_n of_o christianity_n for_o that_o it_o be_v common_a to_o all_o the_o world_n that_o estimation_n of_o god_n which_o be_v common_a to_o natural_a man_n can_v be_v of_o the_o essence_n of_o christianity_n because_o they_o want_v that_o knowledge_n of_o he_o that_o come_v by_o jesus_n christ_n and_o so_o be_v not_o capable_a to_o esteem_v of_o he_o under_o a_o christian_a consideration_n but_o you_o say_v it_o be_v that_o good_a habit_n and_o temper_n of_o mind_n that_o prefer_v god_n and_o his_o son_n jesus_n christ_n before_o all_o the_o world_n answ._n he_o that_o esteem_v god_n above_o all_o must_v needs_o at_o least_o in_o his_o judgement_n so_o prefer_v he_o but_o whereas_o you_o add_v and_o his_o son_n jesus_n christ_n you_o put_v in_o they_o word_n but_o as_o a_o cloak_n for_o yourself_o have_v not_o prefer_v his_o son_n jesus_n christ_n no_o not_o before_o a_o moral_a law_n no_o not_o before_o your_o obedience_n to_o it_o although_o but_o by_o humane_a principle_n yea_o you_o have_v account_v the_o command_n of_o god_n by_o which_o we_o be_v enjoin_v by_o he_o to_o come_v to_o god_n a_o thing_n in_o itself_o but_o like_o levitical_a ceremony_n or_o as_o baptism_n and_o the_o lord_n supper_n a_o thing_n in_o itself_o indifferent_a and_o absolute_o consider_v neither_o good_a nor_o evil_a pag._n 7_o 8_o 9_o you_o add_v it_o be_v such_o a_o tempâ—r_n as_o prize_v above_o all_o thing_n a_o interest_n in_o the_o divine_a perfection_n such_o as_o justice_n and_o righteousness_n universal_a charity_n goodness_n mercy_n patience_n and_o all_o kind_n of_o purity_n answ._n see_v by_o these_o expression_n you_o only_o intend_v moral_a virtue_n and_o those_o that_o be_v inherent_a in_o you_o and_o original_o operation_n of_o humanity_n it_o be_v evident_a that_o you_o have_v but_o impious_o and_o idolatrous_o attribute_v to_o your_o own_o goodness_n so_o high_a and_o bless_v a_o title_n for_o whatsoever_o be_v in_o your_o nature_n and_o original_o the_o dictate_v thereof_o and_o whatsoever_o proficiency_n you_o make_v therein_o by_o humane_a principle_n and_o help_v of_o natural_a endowment_n these_o thing_n be_v but_o of_o yourself_o your_o own_o justice_n your_o own_o righteousness_n your_o own_o charity_n goodness_n mercy_n patience_n kindness_n etc._n etc._n now_o to_o call_v these_o the_o divine_a perfection_n when_o they_o be_v only_o your_o own_o humane_a virtue_n bespeak_v you_o i_o say_v fond_a impious_a and_o idolatrous_a and_o show_v you_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o your_o prentended_a design_n to_o glorify_v god_n such_o a_o one_o who_o have_v set_v up_o your_o own_o goodness_n with_o he_o yea_o and_o give_v it_o the_o title_n of_o his_o bless_a grace_n and_o favour_n that_o scripture_n you_o mention_v rom._n 14._o 17._o although_o by_o the_o word_n righteousness_n there_o be_v intend_v obedience_n to_o the_o moral_a law_n yet_o to_o it_o by_o person_n already_o justify_v by_o christ_n righteousness_n hence_o they_o be_v say_v to_o do_v it_o in_o the_o joy_n and_o peacâ—_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n or_o by_o the_o joy_n
