even_o as_o also_o god_n be_v in_o his_o own_o nature_n every_o thing_n therefore_o return_v to_o that_o out_o of_o which_o it_o first_o spring_v viz._n the_o natural_a man_n with_o its_o perfect_a body_n and_o in_o its_o sphere_n to_o death_n without_o any_o resurrection_n at_o all_o according_a to_o its_o own_o proper_a nature_n and_o the_o supernatural_a man_n in_o its_o perfect_a sphere_n to_o eternal_a life_n abide_v eternal_o in_o god_n and_o yet_o as_o a_o creature_n but_o glorify_v in_o god_n he_o who_o come_v to_o this_o state_n can_v deny_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o thing_n but_o he_o who_o partake_v nothing_o thereof_o also_o as_o a_o natural_a man_n utter_v with_o truth_n that_o he_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v no_o resurrection_n and_o although_o he_o shall_v confess_v it_o yet_o even_o that_o confession_n of_o the_o resurrection_n must_v die_v because_o unto_o the_o natural_a man_n as_o such_o there_o never_o even_o eternal_o belong_v any_o resurrection_n even_o as_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o a_o seed_n sow_o to_o come_v to_o a_o perfect_a death_n unless_o it_o be_v whole_o corrupt_v in_o its_o self_n if_o therefore_o it_o can_v be_v bring_v to_o pass_v that_o a_o man_n can_v give_v up_o himself_o to_o death_n with_o a_o hope_n of_o receive_v forthwith_o another_o life_n and_o as_o to_o that_o state_n and_o according_a to_o that_o rule_n of_o his_o knowledge_n wherein_o he_o be_v dead_a a_o better_a for_o no_o man_n can_v whilst_o his_o present_a understanding_n be_v in_o be_v attain_v to_o another_o understanding_n or_o life_n unless_o the_o former_a be_v first_o dead_o then_o indeed_o there_o will_v be_v no_o need_n to_o proceed_v to_o a_o further_a death_n because_o it_o can_v only_o follow_v that_o which_o have_v be_v in_o be_v before_o now_o therefore_o there_o be_v here_o place_n for_o death_n when_o by_o the_o benefit_n of_o corruption_n through_o the_o operation_n of_o god_n a_o new_a plant_n arise_v according_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o corruption_n do_v every_o thing_n according_a to_o its_o own_o kind_n as_o there_o be_v example_n in_o all_o creature_n and_o in_o the_o corruptible_a propagation_n of_o they_o so_o that_o by_o how_o much_o the_o more_o the_o natural_a man_n affirm_v that_o there_o be_v no_o more_o resurrection_n by_o so_o much_o the_o more_o he_o confirm_v it_o because_o he_o true_o be_v prepare_v himself_o for_o death_n and_o utter_v public_o his_o testimony_n concern_v his_o corruption_n and_o his_o eternal_a death_n for_o there_o be_v to_o be_v no_o resurrection_n of_o he_o and_o thus_o also_o to_o he_o may_v together_o with_o the_o keeper_n who_o the_o pharisee_n set_v a_o testimony_n concern_v the_o resurrection_n of_o christ_n be_v give_v which_o also_o by_o this_o mean_n be_v mighty_o confirm_v for_o they_o who_o stand_v in_o the_o very_a door_n to_o such_o a_o state_n and_o do_v believe_v it_o for_o when_o the_o pharisee_n have_v seal_v up_o the_o sepulchre_n have_v father_n mother_n friends_z riches_n honour_n of_o this_o world_n and_o learning_n now_o this_o forsake_v be_v the_o image_n of_o those_o thing_n which_o also_o must_v beside_o these_o be_v forsake_v for_o all_o that_o be_v get_v out_o of_o they_o viz._n those_o fruit_n which_o be_v spring_v forth_o out_o of_o the_o corruption_n of_o earthly_a thing_n be_v also_o to_o be_v corrupt_v and_o consequent_o those_o good_a thing_n also_o be_v to_o be_v forsake_v but_o out_o of_o that_o forsake_v be_v still_o get_v other_o great_a good_n and_o more_o high_a fruit_n which_o again_o must_v be_v subject_v to_o corruption_n whence_o afterward_o other_o fruit_n do_v come_v forth_o augment_v a_o hundred_o fold_n and_o thus_o death_n and_o corruption_n do_v always_o ascend_v high_a and_o high_a as_o also_o do_v the_o fruit_n and_o the_o life_n spring_a from_o thence_o no_o man_n can_v apply_v the_o craeture_n to_o that_o parable_n unless_o he_o himself_o become_v above_o the_o much_o the_o high_a also_o be_v he_o elevate_v as_o to_o new_a death_n we_o forsake_v the_o body_n because_o we_o find_v it_o before_o in_o adam_n if_o also_o we_o must_v forsake_v our_o soul_n that_o also_o must_v first_o be_v find_v of_o we_o but_o we_o find_v it_o when_o we_o leave_v the_o body_n a_o man_n never_o find_v himself_o in_o that_o which_o he_o once_o have_v lose_v but_o that_o loss_n die_v and_o condemnation_n be_v eternal_a without_o redemption_n but_o in_o god_n that_o be_v find_v in_o god_n also_o be_v redemption_n but_o not_o in_o that_o which_o have_v perish_v else_o man_n shall_v stand_v in_o time_n and_o not_o in_o eternity_n and_o with_o he_o will_v be_v find_v nothing_o but_o the_o old_a stock_n before_o a_o elect_a man_n come_v into_o hell_n or_o the_o grave_a of_o which_o he_o do_v not_o yet_o know_v whither_o he_o shall_v come_v thither_o or_o not_o if_o he_o be_v then_o ask_v to_o renounce_v the_o creature_n he_o say_v yes_o and_o do_v renounce_v it_o so_o as_o he_o will_v never_o more_o touch_v it_o or_o desire_v it_o for_o god_n in_o that_o renounciation_n take_v away_o also_o the_o desire_n so_o that_o such_o a_o one_o can_v and_o will_v not_o he_o faith_n have_v not_o yet_o find_v â—oom_n in_o he_o chap._n xxi_o the_o difference_n betwixt_o those_o who_o be_v in_o the_o hell_n of_o the_o happy_a and_o those_o who_o be_v in_o the_o hell_n his_o conscience_n be_v pure_a because_o he_o have_v apply_v all_o his_o strength_n that_o he_o may_v live_v according_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n which_o they_o who_o be_v in_o the_o hell_n of_o the_o damn_a have_v not_o do_v and_o therefore_o they_o have_v not_o this_o glory_n but_o conscience_n always_o accuse_v they_o that_o they_o be_v impure_a beside_o these_o sit_v down_o in_o the_o lower-most_a hell_n when_o the_o elect_n may_v sit_v in_o the_o uppermost_a hell_n and_o suffer_v the_o torment_n of_o this_o judgement_n find_v refreshment_n neither_o in_o god_n nor_o in_o the_o flesh_n for_o if_o this_o be_v to_o be_v do_v inward_o as_o to_o god_n much_o more_o ought_v it_o to_o be_v do_v outward_o as_o to_o the_o creature_n for_o all_o thing_n must_v be_v behold_v and_o life_n for_o unless_o the_o resurrection_n of_o christ_n shall_v be_v we_o shall_v remain_v eternal_o in_o death_n when_o the_o thief_n on_o the_o right_a hand_n leave_v all_o do_v turn_v himself_o unto_o christ_n he_o beg_v to_o be_v hear_v of_o he_o in_o his_o kingdom_n therefore_o he_o yield_v up_o himself_o into_o conformity_n of_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n wherefore_o also_o he_o be_v conform_v also_o in_o the_o resurrection_n he_o be_v crucify_v by_o law_n which_o like_o a_o just_a magistrate_n do_v not_o desist_v from_o he_o till_o it_o have_v throw_v he_o into_o death_n and_o find_v a_o supernatural_a understanding_n light_n and_o claritude_n and_o whâ—â—â—â—ver_o then_o he_o understand_v of_o god_n be_v 〈◊〉_d â—et_a god_n but_o rather_o the_o contrary_n 〈◊〉_d a_o to_o his_o soul_n he_o be_v strip_v of_o all_o these_o again_o and_o then_o arise_v great_a calamity_n hell_n and_o misery_n yet_o if_o he_o go_v forth_o out_o of_o they_o than_o he_o find_v himself_o in_o the_o vision_n of_o god_n and_o in_o such_o wisdom_n understanding_n and_o claritude_n as_o the_o former_a understand_a vision_n and_o use_n of_o his_o soul_n when_o he_o first_o â—ost_o his_o experience_v the_o thing_n and_o when_o a_o man_n be_v purge_v and_o prepare_v for_o the_o seed_n of_o god_n that_o â—t_a may_v be_v sow_o yet_o he_o do_v not_o hitherto_o apprehend_v nor_o perceive_v how_o a_o man_n must_v be_v quite_o weary_v out_o in_o the_o combat_n under_o this_o illumination_n but_o as_o it_o be_v say_v here_o of_o the_o first_o illumination_n viz._n that_o it_o be_v not_o make_v before_o the_o first_o purification_n be_v accomplish_v even_o unto_o its_o utmost_a degree_n so_o it_o be_v not_o in_o the_o second_o purification_n wherein_o the_o foundation_n be_v purge_v viz._n that_o we_o may_v then_o look_v for_o illumination_n when_o purification_n be_v full_o accomplish_v now_o though_o there_o be_v a_o disparity_n by_o reason_n by_o illumination_n yet_o there_o be_v none_o such_o by_o reason_n of_o purification_n for_o even_o as_o the_o first_o be_v perform_v gradual_o so_o also_o be_v the_o second_o there_o be_v no_o mean_n extant_a by_o who_o help_n god_n and_o our_o mind_n can_v be_v unite_v but_o only_o the_o most_o pure_a body_n of_o christ_n if_o we_o must_v be_v regenerate_v and_o become_v new_a creature_n now_o in_o time_n then_o must_v that_o the_o thing_n only_o in_o notion_n but_o not_o in_o substance_n can_v bear_v contradiction_n and_o affront_n before_o we_o arrive_v at_o regeneration_n we_o must_v be_v drag_v through_o a_o unknown_a forsake_a and_o desolate_a path_n and_o god_n pull_v a_o man_n by_o this_o way_n against_o his_o will_n for_o when_o a_o man_n labour_v under_o the_o law_n so_o that_o he_o can_v advance_v no_o further_o and_o suppose_v that_o he_o be_v now_o arrive_v at_o the_o end_n of_o his_o journey_n then_o at_o length_n must_v he_o journey_n and_o be_v hurry_v through_o this_o unknown_a way_n the_o first_o way_n be_v pleasant_a and_o full_a of_o fresh-green_a herb_n though_o it_o also_o seem_v difficult_a and_o a_o man_n think_v that_o the_o end_n thereof_o will_v be_v god_n yet_o the_o end_n prove_v to_o be_v no_o other_o than_o this_o aforesaid_a rough-way_n which_o be_v purgatory_n in_o which_o a_o man_n be_v purge_v from_o all_o thing_n which_o be_v of_o the_o flesh_n god_n indeed_o draw_v a_o man_n hither_o and_o thither_o in_o this_o way_n and_o still_o some_o small_a piece_n of_o flesh_n be_v tear_v off_o here_o or_o there_o till_o it_o be_v leave_v quite_o bare_a and_o nothing_o but_o spirit_n remain_v then_o the_o man_n willing_o yield_v himself_o up_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n and_o into_o those_o suffering_n because_o the_o carnal_a affection_n be_v thus_o consume_v in_o this_o purgatory_n so_o that_o there_o be_v nothing_o remain_v but_o spirit_n then_o god_n come_v and_o appli_v himself_o unto_o man_n and_o give_v himself_o to_o be_v know_v of_o man_n and_o so_o this_o man_n come_v at_o length_n to_o arrive_v at_o true_a substance_n or_o essence_n of_o which_o he_o be_v make_v capable_a by_o this_o suffering_n for_o in_o this_o suffering_n or_o purgatory_n he_o be_v full_o purge_v and_o make_v fit_a to_o receive_v god_n when_o god_n be_v willing_a to_o help_v we_o than_o he_o exercise_v we_o with_o this_o suffering_n
he_o weigh_v in_o the_o balance_n and_o because_o he_o do_v not_o see_v it_o to_o bâ—_n a_o true_a go_v forth_o he_o forth_o with_o let_v it_o gâ—â—_n and_o wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n this_o faith_n bâ—â—_n hold_v those_o thing_n which_o appear_v not_o anâ—_n which_o a_o man_n know_v not_o whence_o the_o be_v to_o be_v take_v for_o he_o hope_n where_o theâ—â—_n be_v no_o hope_n the_o thief_n death_n be_v not_o neither_o will_v there_o be_v a_o resurrection_n therefore_o all_o thing_n work_v together_o for_o good_a for_o the_o elect_a now_o that_o which_o first_o depart_v from_o earthly_a have_v to_o do_v with_o sin_n secret_o that_o which_o a_o man_n sometime_o thought_n be_v hurtful_a to_o he_o and_o his_o hindrance_n that_o afterward_o serve_v to_o advance_v and_o put_v he_o sorrow_n touch_v he_o if_o thing_n do_v happen_v other_o way_n than_o joy_n and_o desire_n do_v expect_v and_o ask_v to_o stand_v between_o comfort_n and_o discomfort_v between_o joy_n and_o grief_n and_o to_o remain_v untouched_a and_o unmoved_a by_o either_o be_v a_o great_a liberty_n and_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n for_o no_o man_n have_v that_o of_o or_o from_o himself_o yea_o let_v no_o man_n be_v in_o this_o state_n still_o leave_v the_o old_a life_n to_o which_o belong_v judgement_n and_o condemnation_n and_o be_v that_o that_o must_v die_v the_o death_n whereas_o other_o viz._n such_o as_o be_v transplant_v into_o god_n do_v hate_n sin_n out_o of_o the_o nature_n of_o their_o mind_n and_o out_o of_o regeneration_n for_o the_o new_a life_n which_o be_v in_o they_o will_v not_o bear_v sin_n nor_o suffer_v it_o to_o be_v and_o that_o not_o because_o of_o that_o torment_n of_o conscience_n or_o loss_n of_o salvation_n but_o out_o of_o its_o own_o nature_n by_o reason_n of_o its_o tenderness_n and_o its_o holy_a temper_n for_o this_o nature_n can_v endure_v nothing_o that_o be_v strange_a for_o it_o be_v the_o newman_n christ_n jesus_n who_o be_v god_n himself_o hence_o

and_o stick_v rather_o unto_o they_o then_o to_o the_o only_a loâ—e_n god_n for_o to_o love_n god_n be_v no_o other_o thing_n then_o most_o accurate_o to_o do_v that_o which_o he_o will_v not_o for_o the_o hope_n of_o any_o salvation_n or_o of_o any_o good_a thing_n whatever_o for_o the_o love_n of_o god_n itself_o thus_o put_v a_o man_n on_o that_o he_o can_v do_v otherwise_o and_o here_o it_o be_v that_o we_o be_v able_a to_o search_v into_o the_o most_o inward_a corner_n of_o our_o heart_n whether_o or_o no_o we_o seek_v ourselves_o else_o where_o either_o in_o soul_n or_o body_n and_o whether_o we_o serve_v god_n and_o love_v he_o for_o this_o end_n that_o our_o soul_n may_v gain_v salvation_n but_o here_o for_o the_o most_o part_n it_o will_v be_v answer_v that_o whatever_o thing_n be_v do_v be_v do_v only_o for_o love_n yet_o nevertheless_o man_n do_v perform_v these_o thing_n out_o of_o the_o terror_n and_o the_o impulse_n of_o their_o own_o conscience_n as_o the_o i_o may_v so_o say_v follow_v we_o into_o that_o better_a state_n or_o condition_n most_o belove_a lady_n receive_v i_o pray_v thou_o these_o my_o letter_n kind_o if_o perhaps_o they_o may_v prove_v to_o be_v of_o any_o use_n to_o thou_o in_o thy_o holy_a endeavour_n and_o that_o we_o may_v come_v at_o length_n to_o the_o total_a renounce_v our_o flesh_n that_o then_o we_o may_v be_v judge_v according_a to_o the_o rule_n of_o righteousness_n which_o the_o law_n require_v by_o christ_n for_o in_o christ_n sin_n be_v utter_o condemn_v to_o death_n and_o as_o much_o as_o we_o be_v plant_v together_o with_o he_o in_o the_o likeness_n of_o his_o death_n so_o much_o also_o shall_v we_o through_o his_o resurrection_n be_v receive_v into_o the_o newness_n or_o the_o spirit_n who_o then_o perform_v in_o man_n the_o office_n of_o a_o governor_n and_o be_v to_o he_o in_o the_o stead_n of_o his_o life_n who_o place_n before_o this_o our_o flesh_n supply_v all_o that_o be_v beyond_o this_o the_o lord_n himself_o will_v manifest_v to_o we_o when_o we_o come_v thither_o if_o therefore_o we_o have_v our_o inward_a sense_n right_o exercise_v by_o the_o lord_n and_o do_v firm_o adhere_v to_o he_o with_o continue_a prayer_n then_o will_v he_o kindle_v in_o thy_o heart_n some_o live_a light_n which_o my_o dead_a writing_n can_v never_o effect_v by_o mean_n of_o which_o be_v inflame_v with_o whole_o renounce_v for_o when_o but_o one_o half_a of_o the_o heart_n be_v yield_v up_o the_o offering_n remain_v impure_a nor_o be_v it_o accept_v whence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o scripture_n command_v we_o to_o have_v a_o great_a care_n of_o or_o to_o watch_v such_o a_o heart_n which_o seek_v double_a way_n and_o carry_v upon_o either_o shoulder_n and_o halt_v on_o either_o leg_n etc._n etc._n for_o we_o can_v at_o the_o same_o time_n satisfy_v the_o flesh_n conscience_n hinder_v we_o and_o conscience_n too_o the_o flesh_n hinder_v we_o therefore_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o we_o yield_v ourselves_o up_o whole_o as_o a_o pure_a offering_n and_o grateful_a to_o the_o lord_n for_o such_o a_o one_o be_v receive_v by_o the_o lord_n and_o bless_v of_o he_o that_o thenceforth_o he_o
