for_o god_n will_v hear_v they_o and_o assist_v we_o while_o we_o contend_v with_o our_o infirmity_n yet_o we_o shall_v soon_o be_v free_v from_o ill_a and_o idle_a thought_n by_o slight_v they_o and_o take_v off_o our_o mind_n from_o attend_v to_o they_o than_o by_o fence_v and_o fight_v against_o they_o for_o sometime_o while_o we_o stand_v to_o confute_v they_o they_o make_v the_o deep_a impression_n on_o perplex_a and_o timorous_a heart_n a_o prayer_n dry_a without_o relish_n and_o comfort_n be_v the_o more_o acceptable_a to_o god_n in_o that_o it_o be_v unpleasing_a to_o nature_n we_o love_v and_o fear_v nothing_o but_o he_o and_o for_o he_o and_o when_o he_o be_v the_o cause_n and_o the_o measure_n of_o our_o joy_n or_o sorrow_n when_o these_o motion_n of_o our_o mind_n be_v disorderly_a and_o tend_v where_o they_o shall_v not_o we_o become_v unruly_a like_o beast_n but_o when_o they_o be_v order_v and_o direct_v right_o than_o they_o be_v high_o serviceable_a and_o they_o make_v we_o holy_a and_o happy_a like_o angel_n for_o in_o this_o consist_v the_o perfection_n and_o happiness_n of_o man_n to_o have_v his_o affection_n and_o desire_n guide_v by_o truth_n purpose_n it_o will_v not_o suffice_v that_o we_o in_o general_a endeavour_n to_o reform_v and_o keep_v under_o our_o appetite_n and_o unruly_a passion_n for_o corrupt_a nature_n be_v well_o enough_o please_v with_o all_o the_o apparel_n and_o formality_n of_o mortification_n self-denial_n and_o victory_n over_o sinful_a passion_n and_o philosopher_n grow_v in_o love_n with_o the_o fair_a idea_n of_o virtue_n in_o this_o pompous_a attire_n and_o many_o in_o this_o have_v deceive_v themselves_o and_o boast_v of_o conquest_n over_o their_o evil_a inclination_n because_o they_o find_v not_o in_o themselves_o a_o aversion_n to_o virtue_n and_o good_a desire_n but_o when_o it_o come_v to_o trial_n indeed_o and_o they_o be_v no_o long_o to_o fight_v with_o the_o notion_n of_o sin_n in_o general_a but_o with_o a_o present_a urge_v lust_n with_o a_o press_a uneasiness_n and_o necessity_n with_o some_o provocation_n to_o anger_n or_o to_o impatience_n than_o it_o appear_v how_o vain_a how_o weak_a and_o insignificant_a be_v their_o great_a thought_n and_o fine_a resolution_n better_o it_o be_v therefore_o careful_o attend_v to_o every_o particular_a occasion_n of_o vanquish_a ourselves_o and_o restrain_v our_o deprave_a appetite_n and_o to_o do_v it_o serious_o and_o to_o purpose_n for_o so_o by_o degree_n we_o shall_v rectify_v and_o amend_v every_o defect_n and_o bring_v all_o our_o passion_n and_o desire_n under_o the_o power_n of_o right_a reason_n or_o christian_a religion_n 3._o but_o this_o be_v not_o to_o be_v do_v without_o a_o ever-watching_a diligence_n a_o unwearied_a patience_n a_o great_a application_n and_o a_o persevere_v courage_n and_o labour_n that_o by_o offer_v a_o perpetual_a violence_n to_o our_o evil_a propensity_n as_o they_o show_v themselves_o we_o may_v go_v to_o the_o root_n of_o they_o and_o quite_o pull_v they_o up_o for_o now_o in_o our_o state_n of_o depravation_n every_o holy_a affection_n and_o the_o lift_n up_o of_o our_o soul_n to_o god_n be_v violent_a be_v against_o nature_n against_o the_o bent_n of_o our_o sensual_a appetite_n so_o that_o we_o must_v renew_v our_o endeavour_n and_o add_v new_a vigour_n to_o they_o every_o moment_n else_o we_o fall_v down_o and_o nature_n easy_o prevail_v and_o we_o soon_o return_v to_o ourselves_o 4._o as_o weed_n in_o garden_n may_v be_v pull_v up_o and_o yet_o not_o hinder_v from_o grow_v again_o of_o themselves_o so_o by_o care_n and_o by_o keep_v a_o strict_a hand_n over_o our_o vicious_a affection_n we_o may_v so_o keep_v they_o under_o that_o we_o shall_v think_v they_o be_v quite_o destroy_v but_o do_v what_o we_o can_v the_o ground_n of_o our_o corrupt_a nature_n will_v always_o be_v apt_a to_o produce_v ill_a weed_n and_o sin_n of_o itself_o will_v be_v grow_v again_o so_o that_o we_o must_v never_o give_v over_o fight_v never_o cease_v to_o mortify_v and_o purify_v ourselves_o whilst_o we_o live_v and_o yet_o if_o by_o god_n assistance_n we_o can_v once_o do_v some_o one_o noble_a act_n of_o christian_a virtue_n report_v one_o note_a victory_n over_o ourselves_o that_o alone_o may_v be_v sufficient_a to_o assert_v and_o enlarge_v our_o or_o mortification_n in_o proportion_n to_o this_o be_v their_o be_v deprive_v of_o those_o object_n whereon_o they_o act_v with_o delight_n which_o deprivation_n be_v very_o useful_a if_o not_o arrogant_a if_o he_o have_v withal_o great_a riches_n and_o a_o great_a retinue_n stately_a house_n and_o garment_n gold_n jewel_n and_o all_o such_o ornament_n as_o be_v the_o effect_n and_o the_o sign_n of_o man_n vanity_n then_o he_o must_v have_v great_a titlet_n loud_a applause_n and_o much_o reverence_n from_o other_o to_o testify_v that_o they_o acknowledge_v he_o for_o their_o superior_a and_o these_o he_o count_v the_o sovereign_a happiness_n of_o this_o life_n and_o as_o for_o life_n eternal_a he_o mind_v it_o not_o and_o he_o care_v not_o for_o it_o 2._o hence_o proceed_v a_o great_a aversion_n and_o hatred_n against_o all_o thing_n that_o betray_v his_o weakness_n and_o defect_n and_o this_o be_v in_o any_o thing_n inferior_a to_o other_o hence_o anger_n and_o sullen_a discontent_n when_o any_o thing_n happen_v or_o be_v discover_v which_o reflect_v some_o disgrace_n and_o lessen_v his_o excellency_n hence_o a_o perpetual_a fear_n lest_o what_o he_o undertake_v shall_v not_o succeed_v to_o his_o credit_n for_o indeed_o all_o man_n general_o seek_v to_o be_v see_v and_o to_o be_v commend_v even_o ordinary_a people_n in_o the_o mean_a employment_n seek_v to_o excel_v other_o of_o the_o same_o call_n and_o to_o make_v a_o ostentation_n of_o their_o skill_n nay_o the_o philosopher_n themselves_o affect_v praise_v whilst_o they_o speak_v against_o it_o and_o they_o aim_v at_o glory_n write_v brave_a thing_n for_o the_o contempt_n of_o it_o the_o infection_n of_o pride_n run_v secret_o and_o be_v hardly_o to_o be_v discern_v and_o when_o the_o best_a of_o man_n think_v to_o have_v pluck_v up_o by_o the_o root_n that_o curse_a plant_n out_o of_o their_o heart_n yet_o there_o remain_v small_a slip_n and_o string_n which_o will_v bud_v forth_o though_o they_o can_v be_v find_v out_o we_o must_v therefore_o love_v and_o follow_v the_o truth_n and_o utter_o despise_v vain_a show_n and_o false_a praise_n and_o with_o a_o strict_a observation_n and_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o just_a and_o all-seeing_a god_n we_o must_v kill_v and_o stifle_v all_o proud_a and_o vainglorious_a thought_n as_o smoke_v rise_v out_o of_o a_o furnace_n become_v a_o great_a cloud_n and_o darken_v the_o sun_n but_o be_v but_o smoke_n be_v soon_o blow_v away_o so_o he_o mount_v up_o aloft_o that_o be_v high-minded_a and_o proud_a and_o diffuse_v himself_o to_o obscure_v other_o and_o thereby_o grow_v thin_a and_o
ground_v upon_o humility_n but_o if_o this_o fail_v virtue_n be_v but_o hypocrisy_n a_o vain_a ostentation_n and_o a_o empty_a name_n he_o gather_v dust_n before_o the_o wind_n that_o be_v not_o much_o worse_a he_o be_v true_o humble_a who_o be_v willing_a to_o be_v vile_a in_o the_o eye_n of_o other_o as_o he_o ever_o be_v in_o his_o own_o who_o if_o he_o have_v advance_v a_o untruth_n be_v not_o ashamed_a to_o retract_v it_o and_o to_o ask_v pardon_n of_o other_o if_o by_o surprise_n or_o any_o other_o way_n he_o have_v offend_v they_o in_o word_n or_o deed_n this_o be_v know_v to_o good_a man_n to_o be_v a_o great_a self-denial_n he_o be_v true_o humble_a that_o be_v careful_a to_o do_v nothing_o for_o which_o he_o may_v just_o be_v despise_v and_o yet_o he_o be_v content_a to_o be_v so_o and_o meek_o bear_v with_o reproach_n grieve_v for_o the_o offence_n to_o god_n but_o rejoice_v in_o his_o own_o abasement_n he_o who_o most_o innocent_a action_n be_v misunderstand_v and_o misreport_v who_o be_v disappoint_v of_o his_o due_a reward_n and_o requite_v evil_a for_o good_a and_o yet_o be_v patient_a and_o content_v make_v it_o appear_v that_o he_o neither_o value_v himself_o nor_o his_o best_a action_n the_o humble_a man_n be_v silent_a of_o himself_o and_o dead_a to_o the_o world_n and_o when_o he_o be_v forsake_v and_o persecute_v yet_o in_o god_n he_o find_v refuge_n and_o comfort_n he_o be_v decent_o courteous_a and_o oblige_v to_o all_o person_n even_o to_o they_o that_o be_v his_o inferior_n he_o compare_v what_o be_v natural_a to_o he_o to_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n in_o other_o his_o imperfection_n to_o their_o virtue_n and_o so_o entertain_v always_o mean_a thought_n of_o himself_o and_o be_v content_a to_o have_v other_o prefer_v before_o he_o and_o to_o sit_v low_a and_o be_v conceal_v in_o his_o humility_n i_o may_v add_v that_o humility_n will_v make_v a_o man_n obedient_a to_o his_o superior_n meek_a and_o peaceable_a under_o government_n and_o always_o ready_a to_o believe_v better_o of_o the_o goodness_n and_o wisdom_n of_o his_o ruler_n than_o of_o his_o own_o but_o these_o must_v suffice_v 4._o this_o be_v a_o rude_a but_o we_o may_v easy_o not_o be_v humble_a enough_o here_o the_o danger_n be_v great_a as_o the_o crime_n also_o as_o he_o that_o will_v come_v in_o at_o a_o door_n which_o be_v low_a of_o entrance_n if_o he_o bow_v himself_o more_o than_o needs_o there_o be_v no_o harm_n do_v but_o if_o he_o come_v too_o upright_o and_o never_o so_o little_a too_o high_a he_o must_v bruise_v his_o head_n if_o not_o break_v his_o skull_n so_o the_o low_a humility_n will_v never_o hurt_v the_o soul_n but_o the_o least_o pride_n may_v destroy_v it_o let_v a_o christian_a therefore_o to_o avoid_v this_o
