have_v likewise_o a_o sensible_a feel_n of_o his_o own_o wretched_a condition_n by_o nature_n and_o a_o experimental_a knowledge_n of_o jesus_n christ_n so_o that_o he_o know_v christ_n to_o be_v his_o saviour_n and_o redeemer_n and_o rest_v upon_o his_o merit_n alone_o for_o life_n and_o for_o salvation_n by_o this_o then_o try_v and_o examine_v thy_o knowledge_n etc._n etc._n 2_o true_a possible_a let_v this_o cup_n pass_v from_o i_o now_o if_o the_o apprehension_n of_o what_o he_o be_v to_o suffer_v be_v so_o bitter_a oh_o how_o bitter_a think_v you_o be_v his_o suffering_n upon_o the_o cross_n 46_o when_o he_o cry_v out_o my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o which_o word_n do_v not_o imply_v that_o the_o deity_n be_v sever_v from_o the_o humanity_n but_o christ_n body_n be_v break_v with_o torment_n and_o his_o blood_n shed_v for_o remission_n of_o sin_n and_o also_o when_o thou_o see_v other_o take_v the_o bread_n and_o the_o wine_n thou_o shall_v then_o be_v steep_v thy_o thought_n in_o the_o meditation_n of_o christ_n bitter_a death_n and_o manifold_a suffering_n this_o remembrance_n of_o christ_n death_n at_o the_o sacrament_n must_v not_o be_v a_o bare_a historical_a remembrance_n thereof_o content_v thyself_o with_o a_o remembrance_n of_o the_o history_n of_o christ_n death_n as_o it_o be_v set_v forth_o by_o the_o evangelist_n but_o it_o must_v be_v a_o operative_a and_o practical_a remembrance_n work_v up_o thy_o heart_n 1_o to_o a_o unfeigned_a love_n of_o god_n who_o out_o of_o his_o free_a grace_n and_o rich_a mercy_n do_v send_v his_o dear_o belove_a son_n out_o of_o his_o own_o bosom_n into_o the_o world_n to_o take_v our_o nature_n upon_o he_o and_o therein_o to_o die_v a_o bitter_a curse_a death_n for_o man_n cross_n my_o god_n my_o god_n why_o have_v thou_o forsake_v i_o oh_o how_o shall_v this_o ravish_v our_o soul_n with_o admiration_n of_o so_o great_a love_n and_o inflame_v our_o heart_n with_o again_o unto_o he_o who_o do_v and_o suffer_v so_o much_o for_o we_o how_o shall_v the_o meditation_n of_o the_o manifold_a suffering_n of_o christ_n especial_o of_o his_o bitter_a death_n and_o passion_n work_n in_o we_o a_o holy_a passion_n of_o love_n 3_o the_o remembrance_n of_o christ_n death_n shall_v work_v in_o we_o a_o care_n to_o please_v he_o in_o all_o thing_n to_o be_v willing_a to_o do_v and_o suffer_v any_o thing_n for_o he_o who_o have_v do_v and_o suffer_v so_o much_o for_o we_o which_o christ_n declare_v to_o be_v a_o good_a proof_n of_o our_o love_n to_o he_o 15_o say_v the_o true_a cause_n of_o christ_n suffering_n the_o soldier_n that_o scourge_v he_o and_o crucify_a he_o be_v but_o our_o executioner_n to_o inflict_v on_o he_o those_o punishment_n which_o our_o sin_n deserve_v and_o god_n justice_n impose_v for_o the_o same_o they_o be_v our_o sin_n which_o envenom_a those_o whip_n that_o scourge_v his_o innocent_a body_n those_o thorn_n which_o prick_v his_o temple_n and_o those_o nail_n which_o pierce_v his_o hand_n and_o foot_n and_o make_v they_o so_o bitter_a unto_o he_o oh_o therefore_o that_o we_o can_v so_o look_v upon_o he_o who_o we_o have_v pierce_v by_o our_o sin_n that_o we_o may_v mourn_v as_o one_o that_o mourn_v for_o his_o only_a son_n and_o be_v in_o bitterness_n as_o one_o that_o be_v in_o bitterness_n for_o his_o first-born_a 5_o the_o remembrance_n of_o christ_n death_n shall_v work_v in_o we_o the_o death_n of_o sin_n we_o shall_v so_o remember_v the_o death_n of_o christ_n as_o to_o die_v unto_o sin_n for_o the_o apostle_n paul_n urge_v our_o death_n to_o sin_n from_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n 2_o that_o as_o christ_n die_v and_o rise_v again_o so_o we_o shall_v die_v to_o sin_n and_o live_v to_o god_n to_o this_o end_n let_v we_o hate_v and_o loath_a sin_n as_o the_o great_a evil_n resolve_v with_o the_o assistance_n of_o god_n grace_n to_o leave_v and_o forsake_v all_o manner_n of_o sin_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v for_o why_o shall_v any_o sin_n seem_v light_n to_o we_o which_o lie_v so_o heavy_a upon_o our_o saviour_n as_o to_o cast_v he_o into_o a_o bloody_a sweat_n why_o shall_v any_o sin_n be_v sweet_a to_o we_o which_o be_v so_o bitter_a to_o our_o saviour_n far_o be_v it_o from_o we_o by_o our_o renew_a sin_n to_o tear_v open_a his_o wound_n afresh_o and_o crucify_v he_o again_o 6_o the_o remembrance_n of_o christ_n death_n shall_v work_v uâ—_n our_o heart_n to_o some_o due_a thankfulness_n unto_o god_n and_o his_o son_n jesus_n christ_n for_o their_o unspeakable_a love_n and_o mercy_n towards_o we_o therein_o thankfulness_n be_v a_o grace_n not_o only_o to_o be_v exercise_v after_o our_o receive_n of_o the_o sacrament_n but_o likewise_o while_o we_o be_v present_a at_o the_o ordinance_n when_o our_o heart_n be_v affect_v with_o the_o apprehension_n of_o the_o incomprehensible_a love_n of_o god_n the_o father_n in_o give_v his_o belove_a son_n out_o they_o break_v forth_o in_o praise_n and_o thanksgiving_n unto_o god_n the_o father_n and_o his_o son_n jesus_n christ._n iii_o another_o duty_n to_o be_v perform_v at_o the_o ordinance_n be_v the_o exercise_n of_o thy_o grace_n more_o especial_o thy_o faith_n and_o repentance_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o that_o thou_o bring_v faith_n repentance_n and_o other_o grace_n to_o the_o sacrament_n but_o thou_o must_v likewise_o there_o stir_v up_o thy_o grace_n and_o exercise_v the_o same_o or_o else_o thou_o will_v be_v a_o unworthy_a receiver_n for_o not_o only_o a_o wicked_a man_n that_o want_v grace_n but_o likewise_o a_o child_n of_o god_n that_o have_v true_a grace_n may_v receive_v the_o sacrament_n unworthy_o and_o go_v away_o without_o any_o comfort_n or_o benefit_n at_o all_o namely_o if_o he_o do_v not_o there_o stir_v up_o and_o exercise_v his_o grace_n for_o sacrament_n do_v not_o work_v as_o physic_n by_o a_o virtue_n inherent_a in_o they_o but_o according_a to_o the_o convince_a life_n by_o exceed_v other_o in_o holiness_n and_o in_o righteousness_n you_o must_v be_v more_o frequent_a and_o fervent_a in_o family-duty_n more_o careful_a in_o sanctify_v the_o lord_n day_n more_o just_a and_o honest_a in_o your_o deal_n with_o man_n live_v so_o as_o you_o may_v credit_v your_o profession_n and_o adorn_v the_o gospel_n of_o jesus_n christ._n and_o when_o you_o be_v to_o each_o several_o the_o common_a and_o mutual_a duty_n be_v these_o i._o a_o love_a affection_n of_o one_o to_o another_o i_o call_v this_o a_o mutual_a duty_n because_o as_o the_o husband_n be_v to_o love_v his_o wife_n 33_o so_o the_o wife_n be_v to_o love_v her_o husband_n 4_o love_n be_v a_o duty_n which_o every_o christian_a owe_v to_o another_o 39_o love_v thy_o neighbour_n as_o thyself_o say_v our_o saviour_n where_o by_o neighbour_n be_v mean_v every_o man_n every_o woman_n so_o that_o we_o be_v bind_v to_o love_v every_o one_o even_o our_o enemy_n for_o christ_n sake_n but_o the_o near_o any_o be_v knit_v together_o the_o more_o they_o be_v bind_v to_o this_o duty_n of_o love_n and_o to_o abound_v therein_o now_o who_o be_v so_o near_o knit_v together_o as_o husband_n and_o wife_n and_o therefore_o there_o ought_v to_o be_v a_o mutual_a love_a affection_n between_o they_o and_o that_o love_v which_o one_o show_v to_o the_o other_o will_v stir_v up_o the_o with_o all_o man_n i._n e._n so_o far_o as_o may_v stand_v with_o faith_n and_o a_o good_a conscience_n but_o more_o especial_o between_o husband_n and_o wife_n who_o be_v so_o near_o knit_v together_o for_o without_o concord_n and_o agreement_n between_o husband_n and_o wife_n what_o comfort_n can_v either_o find_v in_o their_o house_n the_o truth_n be_v every_o one_o life_n more_o or_o less_o comfortable_a in_o his_o house_n 17_o as_o there_o be_v concord_n and_o agreement_n there_o and_o therefore_o say_v the_o wise_a man_n better_a be_v a_o dinner_n of_o herb_n or_o root_n where_o love_n be_v than_o a_o stall_v ox_n and_o hatred_n therewith_o and_o again_o 1_o better_a be_v a_o dry_a morsel_n and_o quietness_n therewith_o than_o a_o house_n full_a of_o sacrifice_n with_o strife_n i._n e._n slender_a fare_n yea_o a_o dry_a crust_n with_o peace_n and_o concord_n be_v more_o comfortable_a than_o good_a cheer_n with_o strife_n and_o contention_n for_o that_o will_v so_o embitter_v the_o sweet_a meat_n that_o a_o man_n can_v find_v little_a relish_n in_o they_o for_o the_o better_a preserve_n of_o concord_n and_o agreement_n betwixt_o husband_n and_o wife_n take_v these_o few_o direction_n 1_o labour_n to_o suppress_v and_o keep_v down_o all_o furious_a passion_n which_o do_v usual_o occasion_v discord_n and_o dissension_n especial_o when_o one_o be_v passionate_a it_o will_v be_v the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o other_o to_o act_v patience_n and_o to_o express_v a_o spirit_n of_o meekness_n for_o when_o both_o be_v hot_a and_o angry_a together_o than_o the_o fire_n of_o contention_n be_v like_a to_o increase_v to_o such_o a_o flame_n as_o will_v not_o sudden_o be_v quench_v and_o therefore_o i_o will_v commend_v this_o rule_n to_o marry_a person_n to_o beware_v of_o beâ—ing_v both_o angry_a together_o but_o rather_o let_v one_o be_v to_o the_o other_o like_o david_n harp_n to_o apt_a ease_n saul_n fury_n 2_o though_o the_o fire_n of_o contention_n be_v kindle_v at_o home_n yet_o let_v it_o not_o break_v forth_o into_o thy_o neighbour_n house_n but_o be_v sure_o thou_o keep_v it_o within_o
peace_n and_o comfort_n rest_n and_o salvation_n be_v to_o be_v have_v such_o therefore_o as_o have_v find_v their_o heart_n affect_v with_o grief_n and_o sorrow_n for_o their_o sin_n do_v rest_n satisfy_v therewith_o and_o seek_v not_o out_o for_o jesus_n christ_n they_o be_v like_a to_o sit_v down_o without_o christ_n and_o so_o fall_v short_a both_o of_o true_a peace_n here_o and_o of_o true_a and_o full_a yet_o if_o you_o stay_v there_o and_o not_o look_v beyond_o it_o unto_o jesus_n christ_n you_o will_v fall_v short_a of_o salvation_n 8_o other_o bottom_n their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n upon_o their_o work_n of_o charity_n think_v to_o purchase_v heaven_n by_o their_o good_a work_n and_o so_o whole_o exclude_v christ_n merit_n which_o they_o ground_n upon_o that_o sentence_n of_o absolution_n pronounce_v by_o our_o saviour_n at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n unto_o his_o elect_n 34_o wherein_o he_o give_v heaven_n to_o they_o who_o have_v express_v their_o charity_n to_o his_o poor_a member_n in_o feed_v clothing_n they_o and_o the_o like_a whereas_o our_o saviour_n instance_v in_o these_o work_n of_o charity_n as_o the_o fruit_n of_o their_o faith_n whereby_o they_o do_v evidence_n their_o faith_n to_o be_v a_o true_a and_o lively_a faith_n which_o manifest_v its_o life_n by_o those_o work_n of_o charity_n so_o that_o work_v of_o charity_n in_o themselves_o can_v be_v no_o good_a ground_n to_o bottom_v your_o salvation_n upon_o but_o only_a faith_n in_o jesus_n christ_n which_o be_v ever_o accompany_v with_o work_n of_o charity_n if_o true_a and_o sound_a 9_o other_o bottom_n their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n upon_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n they_o will_v confess_v themselves_o to_o be_v poor_a wretched_a sinful_a creature_n but_o they_o hope_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n will_v pardon_v their_o sin_n and_o accept_v their_o poor_a service_n thus_o many_o make_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n to_o eik_v out_o their_o own_o righteousness_n and_o so_o both_o put_v together_o they_o think_v will_v be_v a_o mean_n of_o atonement_n and_o reconciliation_n with_o god_n yea_o and_o of_o obtain_v eternal_a life_n and_o salvation_n but_o such_o do_v wonderful_o mistake_v the_o proper_a work_n of_o god_n mercy_n which_o be_v not_o to_o eik_v out_o our_o righteousness_n but_o to_o show_v we_o our_o unrighteousness_n and_o misery_n and_o then_o to_o show_v we_o jesus_n christ_n the_o perfection_n of_o his_o righteousness_n the_o all-sufficiency_n of_o his_o sacrifice_n with_o his_o willingness_n to_o receive_v all_o poor_a sinner_n that_o will_v come_v unto_o he_o and_o then_o to_o stir_v up_o our_o heart_n to_o receive_v jesus_n christ_n as_o our_o priest_n prophet_n and_o king_n and_o to_o rest_v upon_o he_o for_o life_n and_o for_o salvation_n and_o thus_o may_v i_o go_v on_o show_v you_o the_o many_o false_a and_o rot_a foundation_n upon_o which_o the_o great_a part_n of_o man_n do_v build_v their_o hope_n of_o salvation_n whereas_o in_o truth_n christ_n be_v the_o only_a true_a solid_a foundation_n whereon_o we_o can_v safe_o build_v the_o hope_n of_o our_o salvation_n 11_o and_o therefore_o say_v the_o apostle_n serpent_n be_v perfect_o cure_v of_o the_o sting_n of_o the_o fiery_a serpent_n in_o like_a manner_n all_o poor_a sinner_n sensible_a of_o the_o sting_n of_o sin_n by_o look_v with_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n upon_o jesus_n christ_n lift_v up_o upon_o the_o cross_n shall_v be_v perfect_o cure_v of_o the_o sting_n of_o their_o sin_n this_o application_n of_o that_o type_n our_o saviour_n himself_o make_v 15_o for_o say_v he_o as_o moses_n lift_v up_o the_o serpent_n in_o the_o wilderness_n even_o so_o must_v the_o son_n of_o man_n be_v lift_v up_o that_o whosoever_o believe_v in_o he_o shall_v
