to_o love_v and_o choose_v and_o do_v that_o which_o have_v some_o natural_a evil_n in_o it_o or_o which_o be_v hurtful_a to_o ourselves_o or_o other_o as_o for_o instance_n charity_n which_o be_v one_o of_o the_o most_o excellent_a virtue_n of_o the_o christian_a life_n consist_v in_o do_v every_o thing_n which_o be_v for_o the_o good_a of_o man_n in_o feed_v the_o hungry_a clothe_v the_o naked_a relieve_v the_o injure_v and_o oppress_v the_o fatherless_a and_o the_o widow_n in_o direct_v advise_v assist_v comfort_a man_n in_o difficulty_n and_o distress_n in_o forgive_a injury_n conceal_v fault_n judge_v charitable_o and_o in_o all_o such_o other_o act_n of_o goodness_n as_o be_v great_o for_o the_o benefit_n of_o mankind_n whereas_o the_o contrary_a vice_n do_v all_o the_o contrary_a evil_n and_o mischief_n to_o the_o great_a hurt_n and_o injury_n of_o man_n and_o whoever_o consider_v this_o must_v confess_v that_o moral_a good_a and_o evil_a be_v as_o real_a a_o thing_n as_o natural_a good_a and_o evil_a be_v and_o i_o suppose_v no_o man_n who_o have_v his_o sense_n about_o he_o will_v deny_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o thing_n as_o natural_a good_a and_o evil_a as_o for_o instance_n pain_n and_o pleasure_n and_o then_o his_o same_o sense_n will_v in_o abundance_n of_o instance_n tell_v he_o the_o essential_a difference_n between_o moral_a good_a and_o evil_a on_o the_o other_o hand_n the_o true_a and_o only_a reason_n why_o man_n so_o vast_o differ_v in_o their_o notion_n of_o moral_a good_a and_o evil_a be_v because_o in_o many_o instance_n they_o be_v not_o agree_v what_o natural_a good_a and_o evil_a be_v some_o man_n call_v nothing_o good_a or_o evil_n but_o what_o be_v good_a or_o evil_n to_o their_o body_n such_o as_o pain_n and_o pleasure_n and_o the_o cause_n and_o instrument_n of_o they_o health_n and_o sickness_n riches_n and_o poverty_n and_o the_o like_a other_o think_v and_o with_o much_o great_a reason_n that_o we_o shall_v take_v our_o soul_n into_o the_o account_n too_o that_o whatever_o be_v for_o the_o ease_n and_o pleasure_n of_o our_o mind_n whatever_o adorn_v and_o perfect_v a_o reasonable_a nature_n be_v the_o law_n of_o the_o gospel_n do_v either_o command_v what_o be_v for_o the_o good_a and_o happiness_n of_o mankind_n of_o every_o private_a man_n and_o of_o public_a community_n or_o forbid_v nor_o do_v they_o all_o punish_v the_o same_o crime_n nor_o with_o the_o same_o punishment_n but_o all_o of_o they_o punish_v such_o crime_n as_o they_o think_v injurious_a to_o the_o public_a which_o be_v the_o principal_a concernment_n of_o civil_a government_n and_o inflict_v such_o penalty_n on_o they_o as_o they_o judge_v proportion_v to_o such_o crime_n or_o sufficient_a to_o restrain_v the_o a_o great_a act_n of_o justice_n to_o do_v so_o in_o many_o nation_n some_o private_a injury_n have_v be_v leave_v to_o private_a revenge_n and_o the_o jewish_a law_n itself_o permit_v a_o retaliation_n of_o injury_n a_o eye_n for_o a_o eye_n and_o a_o tooth_n for_o a_o tooth_n though_o it_o do_v not_o permit_v the_o injure_a person_n to_o take_v this_o revenge_n himself_o but_o make_v the_o public_a magistrate_n the_o judge_n of_o it_o it_o may_v be_v you_o will_v wonder_v i_o shall_v appeal_v to_o the_o impatient_a thirst_n and_o appetite_n of_o revenge_n to_o prove_v the_o sense_n of_o mankind_n that_o sin_n ought_v to_o be_v punish_v when_o private_a revenge_n itself_o be_v a_o great_a evil_n and_o forbid_v by_o the_o gospel_n of_o our_o saviour_n but_o for_o all_o that_o revenge_n be_v a_o natural_a passion_n and_o speak_v the_o furious_a rage_n and_o language_n of_o nature_n that_o sin_n ought_v to_o be_v punish_v it_o be_v that_o passion_n in_o we_o which_o minister_v to_o punitive_a justice_n as_o a_o natural_a tenderness_n and_o compassion_n do_v to_o charity_n and_o therefore_o the_o passion_n itself_o be_v not_o sinful_a though_o the_o irregular_a exercise_n of_o it_o be_v it_o be_v implant_v in_o all_o mankind_n as_o the_o love_n of_o justice_n be_v but_o all_o man_n must_v not_o execute_v revenge_n no_o more_o than_o every_o man_n can_v administer_v justice_n where_o every_o man_n be_v a_o minister_n of_o justice_n he_o may_v execute_v his_o revenge_n too_o that_o be_v where_o there_o be_v no_o public_a law_n and_o government_n but_o this_o public_a justice_n be_v execute_v revenge_n still_o though_o without_o that_o partiality_n and_o passion_n which_o man_n betray_v in_o their_o own_o cause_n and_o though_o our_o saviour_n forbid_v private_a revenge_n it_o be_v not_o because_o sin_n do_v not_o deserve_v to_o be_v punish_v but_o to_o teach_v we_o those_o great_a christian_a virtue_n of_o patience_n
secular_a affair_n will_v furnish_v we_o with_o frequent_a opportunity_n of_o exercise_v great_a and_o excellent_a virtue_n yet_o the_o world_n be_v apt_a to_o gain_v too_o much_o upon_o we_o by_o our_o constant_a conversation_n with_o it_o and_o as_o flesh_n and_o sense_n prevail_v so_o the_o spirit_n lose_v and_o if_o this_o do_v not_o defile_v the_o soul_n with_o worldly_a lust_n yet_o it_o take_v we_o off_o very_o much_o from_o the_o frequent_a and_o vigorous_a act_n of_o a_o divine_a life_n which_o be_v the_o true_a happiness_n of_o a_o reasonable_a soul_n but_o then_o these_o mortal_a body_n be_v expose_v to_o great_a want_n and_o suffering_n bad_a man_n be_v injurious_a and_o meekness_n and_o patience_n and_o such_o tame_a and_o gentle_a virtue_n encourage_v their_o injury_n nay_o true_a piety_n and_o religion_n itself_o may_v be_v the_o cause_n and_o reason_n of_o our_o suffering_n and_o when_o the_o body_n suffer_v the_o soul_n suffer_v with_o it_o and_o this_o stifle_v the_o present_a pleasure_n and_o satisfaction_n of_o virtue_n and_o nothing_o can_v support_v the_o spirit_n of_o good_a man_n under_o such_o suffering_n but_o the_o future_a expectation_n of_o great_a reward_n so_o that_o in_o this_o state_n virtue_n alone_o be_v not_o a_o sufficient_a reward_n to_o itself_o for_o either_o its_o pleasure_n be_v but_o faint_a and_o languid_a or_o its_o suffering_n overbalance_n its_o pleasure_n but_o yet_o if_o we_o will_v but_o suppose_v a_o good_a man_n remove_v into_o such_o a_o state_n where_o virtue_n and_o piety_n will_v have_v its_o free_a unrestrained_a undisturbed_a exercise_n and_o can_v produce_v its_o natural_a effect_n without_o any_o hindrance_n and_o interruption_n than_o it_o be_v demonstrable_a that_o piety_n and_o virtue_n must_v make_v man_n happy_a and_o this_o secure_v the_o happiness_n of_o good_a man_n when_o ever_o they_o remove_v out_o of_o these_o body_n and_o out_o of_o this_o world_n when_o these_o body_n and_o this_o world_n can_v no_o long_o tempt_v or_o disturb_v we_o with_o its_o pain_n or_o pleasure_n when_o the_o care_n and_o business_n of_o this_o world_n can_v no_o long_o divert_v and_o employ_v our_o thought_n when_o bad_a man_n can_v no_o long_o injure_v we_o when_o our_o soul_n be_v set_v at_o liberty_n to_o exercise_v all_o their_o rational_a power_n when_o we_o remove_v into_o a_o world_n of_o spirit_n and_o converse_v only_o with_o spiritual_a object_n which_o will_v as_o strong_o affect_v our_o mind_n as_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n do_v our_o sense_n than_o virtue_n will_v and_o must_v be_v a_o reward_n unto_o itself_o then_o the_o pleasure_n of_o wisdom_n and_o knowledge_n and_o divine_a passion_n will_v be_v ravish_v and_o transport_v thus_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n the_o nature_n of_o vice_n be_v such_o as_o to_o make_v a_o reasonable_a creature_n miserable_a but_o yet_o a_o great_a prosperity_n in_o this_o world_n and_o a_o confluence_n of_o all_o sensual_a enjoyment_n may_v at_o present_a palliate_v and_o dissemble_v or_o suspend_v these_o malignant_a influence_n of_o a_o vicious_a nature_n may_v make_v man_n unsensible_a of_o the_o want_n of_o true_a rational_a and_o divine_a pleasure_n or_o of_o the_o pain_n and_o disturbance_n of_o sinful_a passion_n may_v bind_v up_o our_o reason_n and_o conscience_n and_o give_v such_o a_o empire_n and_o predominancy_n to_o sense_n that_o we_o can_v neither_o understand_v nor_o relish_v any_o other_o pleasure_n but_o those_o of_o the_o body_n and_o think_v ourselves_o complete_o happy_a while_o we_o have_v these_o but_o if_o we_o will_v suppose_v such_o man_n strip_v of_o flesh_n and_o sense_n thrust_v out_o of_o these_o body_n and_o out_o of_o this_o world_n and_o there_o be_v a_o end_n of_o their_o sensual_a happiness_n and_o a_o sensualized_a soul_n be_v capable_a of_o no_o other_o and_o when_o all_o other_o object_n be_v remove_v and_o such_o sinful_a and_o distemper_a mind_n be_v bring_v acquaint_v with_o themselves_o when_o the_o virtue_n of_o these_o opiate_n be_v spend_v and_o the_o soul_n recover_v its_o sense_n again_o than_o every_o vicious_a passion_n prove_v a_o fury_n then_o gild_n and_o shame_n and_o fear_n and_o despair_n and_o rage_a remorse_n act_v their_o several_a tragedy_n in_o such_o a_o miserable_a soul_n this_o be_v the_o true_a nature_n of_o sinful_a and_o disorder_a passion_n and_o thus_o they_o must_v do_v when_o they_o act_v like_o themselves_o and_o thus_o they_o will_v do_v when_o they_o be_v let_v loose_a upon_o we_o in_o the_o other_o world_n so_o that_o the_o natural_a reward_n and_o punishment_n of_o virtue_n and_o vice_n that_o virtue_n in_o its_o own_o nature_n be_v the_o life_n the_o happiness_n vice_n the_o death_n and_o misery_n of_o a_o reasonable_a soul_n do_v necessary_o prove_v that_o if_o good_a and_o bad_a man_n remove_v out_o of_o this_o world_n of_o sense_n into_o a_o world_n of_o spirit_n piety_n and_o virtue_n must_v make_v man_n happy_a and_o vice_n miserable_a and_o we_o may_v take_v it_o for_o grant_v that_o god_n will_v reward_v a_o happy_a and_o punish_v a_o miserable_a nature_n 7._o these_o natural_a reward_n and_o punishment_n of_o virtue_n and_o vice_n be_v a_o great_a instrument_n of_o providence_n as_o they_o be_v a_o most_o effectual_a antidote_n and_o remedy_n against_o superstition_n which_o corrupt_v the_o manner_n of_o man_n and_o debauch_n the_o world_n by_o superstition_n i_o mean_v all_o those_o hypocritical_a art_n of_o appease_v god_n and_o procure_v his_o favour_n without_o obey_v his_o law_n or_o reform_v our_o sin_n infinite_a such_o superstition_n have_v be_v invent_v by_o heathen_n by_o jew_n by_o christian_n themselves_o especial_o by_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n which_o abound_v with_o they_o now_o these_o superstition_n do_v not_o only_o spoil_v all_o religion_n but_o corrupt_a man_n life_n and_o give_v they_o great_a security_n and_o impudence_n in_o sin_v which_o overturn_v the_o good_a government_n of_o the_o world_n for_o while_o man_n persuade_v themselves_o that_o they_o may_v live_v as_o they_o list_v and_o commit_v what_o villainy_n they_o please_v and_o yet_o escape_v the_o wrath_n and_o vengeance_n nay_o obtain_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n both_o in_o this_o world_n and_o in_o the_o next_o it_o set_v they_o free_a from_o all_o law_n and_o government_n and_o leave_v no_o restraint_n on_o they_o but_o what_o the_o law_n of_o man_n and_o the_o rod_n and_o axe_n of_o prince_n lay_v on_o they_o but_o when_o man_n consider_v that_o god_n have_v so_o contrive_v the_o nature_n of_o thing_n that_o virtue_n must_v make_v man_n happy_a and_o vice_n miserable_a they_o can_v imagine_v that_o god_n can_v be_v consistent_a with_o preserve_v our_o health_n and_o prolong_v our_o life_n if_o we_o have_v no_o expectation_n after_o death_n nay_o if_o man_n be_v content_v to_o live_v a_o short_a and_o a_o merry_a life_n what_o hurt_n be_v there_o in_o it_o if_o death_n put_v a_o end_n to_o they_o it_o forbid_v we_o to_o lay_v up_o for_o ourselves_o treasure_n on_o earth_n which_o be_v a_o strange_a command_n be_v there_o not_o great_a treasure_n to_o be_v expect_v in_o heaven_n it_o forbid_v earthly_a pride_n and_o ambition_n a_o affectation_n of_o secular_a honour_n and_o power_n but_o why_o must_v we_o submit_v to_o meanness_n and_o contempt_n in_o this_o world_n if_o this_o be_v the_o only_a scene_n of_o action_n we_o shall_v ever_o be_v concern_v in_o for_o a_o mean_a and_o base_a spirit_n be_v no_o virtue_n and_o for_o the_o same_o reason_n it_o can_v be_v no_o virtue_n to_o be_v content_v with_o a_o low_a fortune_n to_o be_v patient_a under_o suffering_n which_o if_o they_o will_v never_o be_v reward_v be_v to_o be_v patient_o miserable_a and_o that_o be_v stupidity_n and_o folly_n but_o to_o have_v our_o conversation_n in_o heaven_n to_o live_v upon_o the_o hope_n of_o unseen_a thing_n be_v madness_n and_o distraction_n if_o there_o be_v no_o heaven_n no_o unseen_a thing_n for_o we_o the_o law_n of_o our_o saviour_n require_v we_o in_o some_o case_n to_o sacrifice_v the_o dear_a interest_n we_o have_v in_o this_o world_n and_o life_n itself_o for_o his_o sake_n which_o be_v a_o senseless_a and_o unreasonable_a command_n if_o he_o do_v not_o intend_v to_o bestow_v a_o better_a life_n on_o we_o if_o there_o be_v no_o other_o life_n after_o this_o no_o wise_a man_n will_v forfeit_v more_o for_o any_o religion_n than_o it_o be_v worth_a in_o this_o world_n and_o show_v that_o there_o be_v great_a temporal_a inconvenience_n in_o it_o that_o to_o observe_v such_o law_n in_o such_o a_o sense_n will_v be_v very_o injurious_a to_o man_n present_a interest_n and_o deprive_v they_o of_o many_o pleasure_n and_o advantage_n of_o life_n it_o be_v easy_a to_o give_v many_o instance_n of_o this_o but_o it_o shall_v suffice_v at_o present_a to_o confess_v that_o consider_v the_o state_n of_o this_o world_n and_o the_o propensity_n and_o inclination_n of_o humane_a nature_n some_o law_n of_o our_o saviour_n be_v very_o unreasonable_a be_v there_o not_o a_o since_o we_o know_v that_o he_o will_v demand_v a_o account_n of_o we_o but_o a_o mere_a belief_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v judge_v will_v not_o do_v this_o unless_o we_o affect_v our_o soul_n with_o come_v now_o methinks_v it_o be_v no_o hard_a thing_n to_o convince_v think_v man_n of_o the_o danger_n and_o folly_n of_o this_o and_o to_o reconcile_v they_o to_o the_o thought_n of_o judgement_n for_o 1._o to_o drive_v these_o thought_n out_o of_o our_o mind_n though_o it_o may_v give_v we_o present_a ease_n yet_o it_o will_v not_o mend_v our_o account_n nor_o prevent_v our_o be_v judge_v god_n will_v judge_v we_o whether_o we_o will_v think_v of_o be_v judge_v or_o not_o be_v no_o man_n to_o be_v judge_v but_o those_o who_o think_v of_o it_o there_o be_v as_o much_o reason_n to_o stupefy_v our_o conscience_n and_o never_o to_o think_v of_o judgement_n as_o there_o be_v for_o sick_a man_n to_o take_v

and_o actual_o send_v to_o hell_n or_o to_o heaven_n shall_v be_v solemn_o judge_v over_o again_o and_o condemn_v again_o to_o hell_n or_o advance_v to_o heaven_n sound_v odd_o to_o such_o man_n but_o very_a foolish_a and_o unphilosophical_a opinion_n for_o we_o may_v as_o reasonable_o think_v that_o the_o soul_n die_v as_o that_o it_o sleep_v in_o a_o state_n of_o separation_n if_o the_o soul_n be_v a_o spiritual_a substance_n distinct_a from_o the_o body_n it_o may_v live_v and_o act_v without_o it_o and_o it_o be_v as_o easy_a and_o reasonable_a to_o defend_v the_o mortality_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o its_o sleep_n for_o if_o the_o soul_n must_v sleep_v when_o it_o be_v separate_v from_o the_o body_n it_o must_v sleep_v for_o ever_o if_o it_o never_o be_v reunite_v to_o the_o body_n great_o impose_v upon_o unlearned_a man_n that_o the_o advocate_n of_o popery_n have_v prove_v from_o the_o ancient_a father_n that_o they_o own_v a_o middle_a state_n which_o be_v neither_o heaven_n nor_o hell_n and_o then_o present_o conclude_v that_o this_o must_v be_v purgatory_n now_o it_o be_v very_o true_a the_o ancient_a christian_n do_v own_o a_o middle_a state_n between_o death_n and_o judgement_n which_o be_v neither_o heaven_n nor_o hell_n but_o yet_o never_o dream_v of_o a_o popish_a purgatory_n they_o believe_v bad_a man_n be_v in_o a_o state_n of_o punishment_n as_o soon_o as_o place_n of_o torment_n to_o expiate_v the_o temporal_a punishment_n due_a to_o sin_n when_o the_o eternal_a punishment_n be_v remit_v which_o be_v the_o popish_a purgatory_n and_o the_o most_o barbarous_a representation_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n though_o the_o most_o profitable_a

courtship_n when_o it_o incircle_n you_o with_o flame_n and_o smoke_n and_o darkness_n those_o who_o choose_v this_o world_n for_o their_o portion_n can_v never_o remove_v out_o of_o it_o and_o therefore_o must_v be_v content_v to_o share_v fortune_n with_o it_o to_o smile_v when_o it_o smile_v and_o to_o burn_v when_o it_o burn_v with_o what_o triumph_n will_v good_a man_n at_o that_o day_n to_o sinner_n there_o will_v be_v fire_n there_o to_o burn_v they_o but_o no_o worm_n to_o gnaw_v their_o conscience_n no_o inward_a fury_n to_o torment_v they_o the_o justice_n of_o the_o last_o judgement_n which_o will_v stop_v the_o mouth_n of_o sinner_n and_o make_v they_o confess_v their_o own_o gild_n and_o desert_n will_v make_v the_o flame_n of_o hell_n so_o furious_o rage_n and_o devour_v so_o that_o it_o be_v necessary_a that_o the_o last_o judgement_n shall_v be_v execute_v by_o a_o visible_a judge_n that_o it_o may_v not_o be_v think_v the_o effect_n of_o chance_n and_o accident_n or_o fate_n but_o the_o result_n of_o the_o divine_a wisdom_n and_o counsel_n that_o the_o world_n may_v see_v and_o know_v that_o god_n be_v come_v to_o judge_v they_o and_o to_o take_v of_o it_o strike_v into_o sinner_n how_o will_v it_o cool_v the_o heat_n of_o lust_n how_o will_v it_o make_v their_o countenance_n change_n and_o loosen_v the_o joint_n of_o their_o loin_n and_o make_v their_o knee_n knock_v one_o against_o another_o like_o the_o hand_n write_v upon_o the_o wall_n while_o they_o be_v carouse_v in_o their_o full_a bowl_n and_o drink_v away_o the_o thought_n of_o god_n and_o judgement_n who_o can_v possible_o conceive_v the_o joy_n and_o exultation_n of_o that_o day_n when_o good_a man_n shall_v see_v their_o lord_n come_v in_o the_o cloud_n of_o heaven_n clothe_v with_o a_o humane_a body_n but_o bright_a and_o glorious_a as_o the_o sun_n a_o body_n which_o still_o retain_v the_o mark_n of_o his_o suffering_n and_o the_o token_n of_o his_o love_n how_o
