soon_o be_v satisfy_v in_o this_o point_n for_o the_o first_o rudiment_n of_o it_o will_v solve_v all_o the_o seem_a riddle_n it_o will_v teach_v we_o that_o man_n consist_v of_o two_o part_n body_n and_o soul_n who_o quality_n and_o part_n be_v very_o different_a the_o body_n make_v he_o a_o member_n of_o the_o material_a world_n from_o whence_o he_o derive_v his_o wretchedness_n and_o misery_n in_o his_o soul_n he_o bear_v the_o image_n of_o god_n which_o be_v the_o foundation_n of_o his_o real_a goodness_n if_o the_o mind_n be_v subject_a to_o matter_n we_o see_v only_o his_o imperfection_n and_o find_v nothing_o but_o a_o sensitive_a man_n in_o he_o but_o if_o the_o body_n be_v whole_o subject_a to_o the_o soul_n then_o only_o the_o greatness_n and_o glory_n of_o the_o soul_n appear_v and_o we_o find_v a_o spiritual_a man_n in_o he_o whatever_o therefore_o may_v be_v say_v concern_v the_o greatness_n of_o man_n become_v a_o incredible_a paradox_n if_o apply_v to_o his_o outward_a and_o carnal_a part_n and_o whatever_o may_v be_v say_v concern_v his_o imperfection_n and_o unworthiness_n will_v be_v utter_o false_a if_o apply_v to_o he_o as_o a_o be_v glorious_a and_o pure_o spiritual_a but_o in_o our_o present_a state_n the_o soul_n and_o body_n be_v in_o a_o continual_a war_n sometime_o the_o excellence_n and_o greatness_n of_o man_n nature_n and_o sometime_o the_o weakness_n and_o vnworthiness_n of_o it_o appear_v according_a as_o the_o flesh_n or_o spirit_n be_v predominant_a and_o this_o serve_v for_o a_o certain_a rule_n to_o judge_v of_o man_n perfection_n or_o imperfection_n that_o every_o thing_n be_v great_a and_o noble_a in_o he_o that_o bring_v the_o flesh_n in_o subjection_n to_o the_o spirit_n and_o every_o thing_n seem_v vile_a and_o contemptible_a that_o base_o bring_v the_o spirit_n in_o subjection_n to_o the_o flesh_n for_o what_o sort_n of_o greatness_n can_v we_o find_v in_o the_o latter_a and_o wherein_o consist_v the_o excellence_n of_o his_o outward_a qualification_n by_o which_o alone_o he_o endeavour_v to_o procure_v the_o esteem_n of_o other_o man_n not_o in_o the_o antiquity_n of_o his_o original_a for_o that_o bring_v he_o but_o the_o near_a to_o his_o primitive_a nothing_o or_o to_o the_o clay_n out_o of_o which_o he_o be_v first_o form_v he_o betray_v his_o weak_a judgement_n in_o esteem_v so_o much_o the_o original_a of_o his_o body_n and_o not_o regard_v that_o of_o his_o soul_n as_o for_o the_o good_n of_o fortune_n they_o swell_v his_o heart_n with_o pride_n and_o therefore_o he_o value_v himself_o more_o for_o what_o he_o enjoy_v than_o for_o what_o he_o real_o be_v suppose_v he_o a_o conqueror_n or_o if_o you_o please_v lord_n of_o the_o universe_n but_o alas_o that_o can_v be_v of_o no_o great_a continuance_n his_o reason_n indeed_o exalt_v he_o far_o above_o all_o other_o creature_n but_o even_o that_o reason_n be_v a_o slave_n to_o his_o scnse_n his_o passion_n deject_v rather_o than_o elevate_v he_o ambition_n be_v a_o weakness_n which_o make_v he_o unable_a to_o rule_v his_o desire_n pride_n a_o imperfection_n which_o so_o possess_v his_o itself_o to_o think_v better_o upon_o what_o be_v least_o valuable_a in_o its_o condition_n the_o punctilio_n of_o honour_n a_o vain_a imperfection_n that_o make_v a_o idol_n of_o itself_o that_o valour_n which_o affront_v death_n nothing_o but_o a_o man_n strange_o forget_v himself_o and_o be_v insensible_a of_o the_o danger_n that_o surround_v he_o and_o last_o all_o the_o passion_n but_o so_o many_o deviation_n from_o the_o end_n we_o ought_v to_o pursue_v so_o many_o disorder_n and_o irregularity_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o appear_v full_o by_o what_o we_o have_v say_v elsewhere_o concern_v the_o end_n for_o which_o man_n be_v original_o design_v and_o though_o these_o be_v all_o moral_a truth_n they_o be_v not_o the_o less_o certain_a experience_n confirm_v they_o and_o â—he_v free_a confession_n of_o the_o incredulous_a who_o be_v glad_a of_o any_o opportunity_n of_o make_v we_o observe_v all_o these_o sign_n and_o character_n of_o our_o wretchedness_n and_o misery_n think_v thereby_o to_o persuade_v we_o that_o so_o miserable_a a_o creature_n be_v not_o design_v for_o such_o a_o glorious_a end_n as_o we_o imagine_v but_o let_v they_o only_o consider_v how_o true_o great_a man_n be_v when_o he_o submit_v the_o lust_n of_o the_o flesh_n to_o the_o rule_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o they_o will_v be_v ashamed_a of_o their_o false_a opinion_n they_o will_v find_v he_o indeed_o a_o be_v that_o have_v a_o beginning_n but_o yet_o one_o that_o glory_v in_o god_n as_o the_o author_n of_o it_o they_o will_v find_v he_o a_o atom_n that_o raise_v its_o self_n above_o all_o other_o creature_n by_o run_v back_o to_o its_o first_o author_n and_o pay_v he_o homage_n for_o its_o unworthiness_n a_o worm_n that_o have_v the_o honour_n of_o refer_v its_o self_n to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n to_o which_o also_o all_o other_o being_n be_v refer_v but_o without_o know_v it_o they_o will_v find_v he_o a_o be_v that_o be_v indeed_o mortal_a carry_v its_o hope_n beyond_o death_n a_o be_v that_o be_v finite_a yet_o its_o desire_n and_o intention_n be_v unlimited_a a_o small_a quantity_n of_o earth_n will_v cover_v his_o body_n yet_o nothing_o but_o immensity_n will_v satisfy_v his_o soul_n he_o possess_v all_o thing_n for_o he_o call_v himself_o the_o son_n of_o he_o that_o create_v all_o thing_n he_o be_v not_o to_o be_v rank_v among_o those_o creature_n which_o grow_v proud_a by_o promotion_n or_o can_v be_v humble_a without_o debase_v themselves_o he_o be_v great_a but_o not_o proud_a because_o he_o know_v his_o natural_a vileness_n and_o he_o be_v humble_a but_o not_o base_a because_o he_o be_v sensible_a of_o his_o true_a greatness_n and_o worth_n he_o have_v make_v such_o a_o covenant_n with_o his_o god_n as_o the_o destruction_n of_o the_o body_n be_v not_o able_a to_o dissolve_v though_o he_o conqer_v not_o kingdom_n nor_o raze_v city_n yet_o he_o be_v able_a to_o overcome_v those_o passion_n which_o have_v produce_v the_o like_a effect_n he_o sacrifice_n to_o god_n those_o very_a passion_n to_o which_o man_n heretofore_o sacrifice_v all_o their_o possession_n he_o esteem_v not_o a_o crown_n and_o the_o high_a dignity_n be_v the_o world_n afflict_v he_o on_o every_o side_n it_o can_v lessen_v his_o opinion_n of_o himself_o he_o raise_v himself_o above_o what_o he_o see_v to_o humble_v himself_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n who_o be_v invisible_a he_o possess_v eternity_n though_o he_o exist_v in_o time_n he_o be_v a_o child_n of_o god_n though_o he_o live_v among_o man_n he_o be_v sensible_a of_o his_o exaltation_n above_o all_o other_o being_n but_o he_o be_v true_o great_a in_o his_o own_o humility_n thus_o the_o christian_a religion_n not_o only_o show_v we_o man_n excellence_n but_o be_v also_o the_o cause_n of_o it_o by_o make_v the_o mean_a part_n of_o our_o nature_n subservient_fw-fr to_o the_o noble_a he_o therefore_o that_o utter_o renounce_v all_o religion_n lose_v the_o perfection_n indeed_o worthy_a to_o be_v admire_v which_o philosophy_n so_o confident_o start_v up_o in_o matter_n of_o divinity_n there_o be_v many_o thing_n in_o nature_n who_o existence_n we_o ready_o own_o but_o nothing_o though_o inconsiderable_a in_o itself_o the_o manner_n of_o which_o we_o can_v comprehend_v and_o yet_o it_o never_o come_v into_o any_o man_n mind_n that_o have_v but_o common_a sense_n to_o call_v they_o in_o question_n if_o then_o we_o show_v ourselves_o so_o very_o reasonable_a in_o natural_a thing_n why_o shall_v we_o prove_v so_o senseless_a in_o matter_n of_o religion_n in_o common_a thing_n our_o understanding_n act_v natural_o but_o in_o religion_n it_o be_v delude_v by_o the_o passion_n which_o continual_o seek_v how_o to_o suggest_v to_o it_o new_a occasion_n of_o doubt_v we_o may_v pass_v the_o same_o judgement_n upon_o matter_n of_o grace_n do_v but_o distinguish_v philosophy_n from_o divinity_n and_o you_o will_v avoid_v thereby_o a_o infinite_a number_n of_o difficulty_n it_o be_v certain_a that_o for_o the_o most_o part_n they_o proceed_v either_o from_o the_o eager_a desire_n we_o have_v to_o understand_v what_o be_v altogether_o incomprehensible_a or_o from_o the_o speculation_n we_o have_v already_o make_v upon_o that_o we_o can_v not_o comprehend_v now_o to_o know_v the_o injustice_n of_o man_n in_o this_o we_o need_v but_o observe_v that_o most_o of_o they_o be_v full_o persuade_v that_o god_n preserve_v we_o nourish_v and_o support_v we_o by_o his_o perpetual_a concurrence_n without_o which_o the_o meat_n we_o eat_v and_o the_o care_n we_o have_v of_o our_o preservation_n will_v stand_v we_o in_o no_o stead_n and_o by_o which_o we_o immediate_o subsist_v yet_o we_o never_o hear_v that_o any_o one_o do_v serious_o conclude_v from_o thence_o that_o we_o ought_v whole_o to_o lay_v aside_o the_o care_n of_o our_o own_o preservation_n and_o sole_o rely_v on_o the_o concurrence_n of_o god_n we_o never_o see_v any_o one_o so_o senseless_a as_o to_o perplex_v himself_o with_o these_o sort_n of_o needless_a question_n if_o it_o can_v be_v say_v that_o i_o nourish_v myself_o by_o take_v those_o aliment_n as_o be_v absolute_o requisite_a for_o my_o preservation_n how_o can_v it_o be_v reasonable_o affirm_v that_o god_n nourish_v or_o preserve_v i_o or_o if_o it_o be_v god_n as_o nourish_v i_o how_o do_v i_o continual_o start_v in_o matter_n of_o religion_n however_o there_o be_v as_o good_a ground_n for_o they_o in_o the_o one_o as_o the_o other_o because_o they_o consist_v in_o the_o dependence_n we_o have_v upon_o the_o deity_n either_o in_o our_o be_v creature_n already_o or_o be_v bear_v again_o or_o become_v new_a creature_n in_o nature_n we_o all_o know_v we_o subsist_v only_o by_o the_o concurrence_n of_o god_n without_o inquire_v into_o the_o manner_n of_o it_o but_o in_o religion_n we_o be_v not_o content_a to_o know_v that_o we_o be_v regenerate_v by_o grace_n we_o further_o desire_v to_o search_v into_o the_o manner_n of_o that_o operation_n and_o our_o principal_a care_n be_v how_o to_o find_v it_o out_o so_o that_o those_o very_a difficulty_n which_o can_v not_o perplex_v man_n in_o matter_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v seem_v terrible_a and_o frightful_a to_o they_o when_o it_o be_v requisite_a they_o shall_v lead_v a_o good_a life_n if_o you_o will_v know_v the_o reason_n of_o it_o you_o must_v consult_v the_o heart_n of_o man._n it_o will_v be_v sufficient_a for_o we_o if_o we_o act_n with_o as_o much_o reason_n in_o religion_n as_o we_o do_v in_o civil_a life_n if_o we_o consult_v the_o pure_a light_n of_o reason_n it_o will_v inform_v we_o that_o it_o be_v as_o necessary_a the_o new_a creature_n shall_v have_v its_o dependence_n upon_o god_n as_o that_o the_o creature_n shall_v depend_v upon_o he_o because_o god_n himself_o be_v as_o well_o the_o author_n of_o the_o one_o as_o of_o the_o other_o and_o as_o our_o body_n have_v neither_o life_n motion_n nor_o be_v but_o from_o he_o so_o our_o soul_n have_v no_o faculty_n knowledge_n or_o affection_n but_o what_o they_o derive_v from_o thence_o every_o be_v come_v from_o he_o and_o nothing_o but_o what_o be_v defective_a can_v have_v any_o other_o principle_n the_o thing_n itself_o then_o be_v very_o certain_a i_o mean_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o grace_n to_o which_o we_o point_n out_o to_o we_o what_o be_v most_o eminent_a in_o mystery_n they_o neither_o examine_v the_o order_n of_o the_o decree_n of_o god_n nor_o the_o inconceivable_a transmission_n of_o original_a of_o this_o truth_n in_o the_o union_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o body_n where_o two_o substance_n distinct_a in_o the_o high_a degree_n be_v unite_v together_o without_o have_v any_o natural_a proportion_n betwixt_o they_o what_o have_v the_o soul_n to_o do_v with_o the_o body_n and_o how_o can_v there_o be_v any_o affinity_n betwixt_o thing_n of_o so_o different_a a_o nature_n it_o may_v perhaps_o be_v answer_v that_o there_o be_v a_o great_a disparity_n betwixt_o the_o humane_a and_o divine_a nature_n than_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o body_n i_o agree_v that_o the_o disparity_n be_v infinite_o great_a but_o the_o diversity_n be_v still_o the_o same_o and_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o difference_n betwixt_o a_o union_n which_o carry_v a_o mutual_a dependence_n along_o with_o it_o such_o as_o that_o of_o our_o soul_n and_o body_n and_o a_o union_n which_o contain_v the_o dependence_n only_o on_o the_o one_o part_n such_o as_o that_o which_o be_v betwixt_o the_o divine_a and_o humane_a
themselves_o capable_a of_o impart_v those_o gift_n to_o other_o man_n and_o consequent_o as_o much_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v advance_v that_o the_o apostle_n write_v none_o of_o all_o those_o epistle_n that_o be_v ascribe_v to_o they_o that_o they_o preach_v not_o public_o at_o jerusalem_n on_o the_o day_n of_o pentecost_n nor_o settle_v any_o church_n therein_o or_o teach_v man_n that_o they_o shall_v steadfast_o believe_v in_o the_o gospel_n last_o shall_v he_o say_v that_o the_o apostle_n sincere_o believe_v all_o these_o thing_n but_o yet_o that_o none_o of_o they_o be_v true_a reason_n and_o yet_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o folly_n be_v the_o only_a principle_n that_o make_v we_o lead_v good_a life_n and_o sanctify_v the_o corrupt_a affection_n of_o men._n it_o be_v certain_a that_o by_o consider_v the_o union_n of_o all_o these_o circumstance_n together_o there_o arise_v from_o they_o such_o a_o moral_a demonstration_n as_o be_v worth_a all_o other_o mathematical_a demonstration_n in_o the_o world_n but_o to_o be_v as_o brief_a as_o possible_a i_o say_v that_o this_o demonstration_n after_o all_o consist_v in_o the_o two_o follow_a proposition_n
