be_v hot_a and_o soft_a and_o pliable_a and_o this_o change_n be_v throughout_o in_o every_o part_n of_o it_o and_o yet_o it_o be_v iron_n still_o so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o spirit_n when_o it_o come_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o christian_a he_o mingle_v and_o infuse_v spiritual_a life_n into_o all_o the_o part_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v say_v if_o christ_n be_v in_o you_o the_o body_n be_v 10._o dead_a as_o touch_v sin_n but_o the_o spirit_n be_v alive_a the_o body_n be_v dead_a that_o be_v as_o touch_v reign_a sin_n he_o be_v like_o a_o tree_n that_o want_v and_o attend_v upon_o it_o most_o when_o that_o cross_v holiness_n but_o you_o will_v not_o again_o cross_v it_o for_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n when_o it_o be_v thus_o with_o you_o whatsoever_o you_o think_v of_o yourselves_o you_o have_v not_o the_o sanctify_a spirit_n but_o a_o common_a spirit_n without_o life_n second_o you_o have_v but_o a_o assume_v body_n of_o grace_n if_o you_o have_v only_o for_o a_o time_n but_o they_o walk_v not_o always_o 3._o even_o so_o if_o you_o have_v but_o a_o common_a spirit_n you_o will_v not_o be_v constant_a in_o good_a but_o off_o and_o on_o the_o rule_n a_o man_n that_o be_v live_v in_o christ_n you_o shall_v still_o find_v he_o live_v and_o move_v and_o do_v the_o action_n of_o the_o new_a man_n a_o man_n that_o have_v but_o a_o common_a spirit_n may_v do_v something_n that_o be_v good_a he_o may_v keep_v and_o press_v down_o some_o sin_n awhile_o but_o not_o always_o neither_o then_o because_o it_o be_v sin_n but_o because_o it_o cross_v his_o profit_n or_o pleasure_n or_o some_o other_o thing_n again_o he_o may_v have_v some_o taste_n and_o relish_v of_o spiritual_a thing_n but_o he_o be_v not_o purge_v and_o cleanse_v by_o they_o first_o he_o may_v walk_v as_o a_o live_a man_n walk_v that_o be_v perform_v holy_a duty_n but_o they_o be_v not_o constant_a in_o holy_a duty_n neither_o do_v they_o perform_v they_o in_o obedience_n but_o out_o of_o self_n love_n that_o be_v they_o be_v still_o ebb_v and_o seldom_o flow_v they_o omit_v oft_o than_o they_o perform_v therefore_o let_v i_o exhort_v you_o that_o be_v alive_a and_o have_v be_v dead_a be_v you_o careful_a to_o prize_v your_o life_n and_o you_o that_o have_v be_v alive_a but_o now_o be_v dead_a that_o be_v you_o that_o have_v fall_v from_o your_o great_a while_n and_o punish_v some_o present_o what_o do_v it_o advantage_v they_o have_v they_o cause_n to_o boast_v themselves_o or_o rather_o be_v it_o not_o far_o better_a for_o they_o to_o be_v cut_v off_o present_o then_o to_o be_v spare_v a_o while_n and_o then_o to_o have_v the_o judgement_n the_o great_a therefore_o when_o god_n will_v make_v his_o power_n know_v to_o man_n he_o will_v therefore_o whatsoever_o they_o seem_v to_o be_v yet_o the_o truth_n be_v they_o be_v more_o afflict_v than_o other_o man_n 2._o respect_n the_o prosperity_n of_o wicked_a man_n be_v a_o punishment_n grace_n as_o you_o know_v the_o superfluous_a branch_n of_o any_o tree_n hinder_v the_o growth_n of_o the_o other_o branch_n if_o they_o be_v not_o cut_v off_o they_o will_v make_v they_o to_o wither_v and_o die_v thus_o it_o be_v with_o wicked_a man_n because_o they_o be_v not_o afflict_v they_o begin_v to_o wither_v and_o grow_v cold_a unto_o good_a the_o body_n do_v not_o so_o much_o wither_v with_o age_n as_o the_o inward_a man_n do_v by_o these_o lust_n theybreed_a a_o consumption_n in_o the_o soul_n that_o will_v not_o be_v recover_v 4._o respect_n again_o though_o we_o see_v they_o not_o afflict_v respect_n yet_o they_o have_v many_o affliction_n which_o we_o know_v not_o even_o as_o the_o godly_a have_v many_o inward_a joy_n and_o comfort_n in_o their_o heart_n which_o wicked_a man_n never_o feel_v so_o wicked_a man_n have_v many_o strong_a fear_n in_o their_o heart_n and_o many_o sudden_a flash_n of_o the_o fire_n of_o hell_n in_o their_o soul_n much_o hollowness_n in_o their_o heart_n much_o sorrow_n mingle_v with_o their_o carnal_a joy_n and_o often_o affright_v with_o the_o jaw_n of_o death_n and_o arrest_v with_o horror_n of_o conscience_n though_o outward_o they_o seem_v to_o the_o world_n to_o be_v the_o joyful_a and_o happy_a man_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o the_o truth_n be_v they_o be_v the_o most_o miserable_a and_o sorrowful_a man_n in_o the_o world_n for_o as_o the_o inward_a joy_n be_v far_o great_a than_o the_o outward_a joy_n so_o the_o inward_a sorrow_n be_v far_o great_a than_o the_o outward_a sorrow_n alone_o thus_o you_o see_v the_o point_n prove_v the_o use_n of_o this_o shall_v teach_v we_o not_o to_o delude_v use_v ourselves_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o affliction_n in_o affliction_n we_o be_v ready_a to_o conclude_v because_o our_o affliction_n be_v great_a than_o other_o that_o therefore_o we_o be_v great_a sinner_n but_o here_o you_o see_v the_o contrary_a the_o great_a sinner_n be_v not_o always_o outward_o the_o take_v heed_n then_o of_o pollute_v the_o sabbath_n and_o other_o sin_n that_o he_o may_v entice_v thou_o to_o for_o sanus_fw-la and_o aeger_fw-la differ_v the_o one_o desire_n one_o thing_n the_o the_o understanding_n whereby_o we_o know_v the_o hurt_n that_o come_v to_o we_o thereby_o when_o a_o man_n feel_v and_o see_v and_o know_v his_o sin_n then_o be_v it_o unsupportable_a and_o the_o reason_n thereof_o be_v because_o that_o then_o a_o man_n spirit_n be_v wound_v and_o can_v bear_v itself_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o point_n be_v these_o three_o first_o because_o that_o sin_n and_o eye_n to_o see_v their_o sin_n which_o if_o he_o shall_v do_v now_o while_o they_o be_v here_o on_o earth_n will_v make_v they_o cry_v out_o as_o much_o as_o it_o be_v with_o comfort_n so_o it_o be_v with_o grief_n if_o we_o know_v not_o of_o it_o it_o affect_v we_o not_o as_o the_o army_n that_o be_v about_o gebezai_n it_o comfort_v not_o he_o because_o he_o see_v it_o not_o so_o for_o grief_n great_a grief_n be_v his_o absence_n if_o we_o want_v that_o we_o be_v deprive_v of_o all_o comfort_n as_o if_o the_o sun_n be_v absent_a we_o be_v deprive_v of_o all_o light_n if_o there_o be_v but_o a_o little_a comfort_n remain_v that_o will_v serve_v to_o hold_v the_o head_n above_o the_o water_n but_o if_o all_o comfort_n be_v go_v it_o then_o present_o sink_v the_o proper_a object_n of_o fear_n and_o grief_n be_v the_o absence_n of_o good_a and_o prelence_n of_o evil_a and_o both_o they_o come_v by_o the_o privation_n of_o god_n presence_n the_o three_o reason_n be_v take_v from_o the_o nature_n of_o conscience_n itself_o when_o it_o be_v awaken_v because_o that_o reas._n then_o it_o be_v sensible_a of_o the_o least_o sin_n for_o every_o faculty_n as_o it_o be_v large_a so_o it_o be_v more_o capable_a of_o joy_n and_o grief_n therefore_o man_n be_v say_v to_o be_v more_o capable_a of_o joy_n and_o grief_n than_o the_o bruit_n beast_n and_o in_o man_n the_o soul_n be_v more_o capable_a than_o the_o body_n and_o in_o the_o soul_n conscience_n of_o all_o other_o part_n most_o capable_a and_o as_o the_o conscience_n be_v capable_a of_o the_o great_a grief_n so_o also_o of_o the_o great_a comfort_n it_o be_v capable_a of_o the_o peace_n of_o god_n which_o pass_v all_o understanding_n and_o sure_o this_o horror_n of_o conscience_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o spark_n of_o hell_n fire_n which_o the_o heathen_a have_v some_o inkling_n of_o when_o they_o say_v they_o be_v exagitated_a with_o the_o fury_n see_v then_o that_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v thus_o insuppartable_a this_o shall_v teach_v we_o in_o all_o thing_n especial_o 1_o to_o labour_v to_o keep_v a_o good_a conscience_n and_o to_o labour_v to_o be_v free_a from_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n if_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v the_o great_a evil_n then_o shall_v the_o whole_a stream_n of_o our_o endeavour_n be_v to_o take_v heed_n thereof_o by_o labour_v for_o to_o keep_v a_o pure_a conscience_n proportion_n your_o care_n herein_o to_o the_o good_a that_o will_v come_v thereby_o it_o will_v bring_v the_o unspeakable_a comfort_n without_o this_o labour_n to_o keep_v a_o good_a conscience_n thou_o will_v never_o have_v thy_o heart_n perfect_a therefore_o labour_n for_o it_o consider_v the_o good_a it_o bring_v man_n busy_a their_o head_n here_o to_o the_o utmost_a for_o other_o thing_n as_o for_o learning_n credit_n riches_n honour_n and_o all_o because_o they_o think_v that_o they_o be_v worthy_a their_o labour_n let_v we_o then_o but_o consider_v the_o fruit_n that_o this_o peace_n of_o conscience_n will_v bring_v let_v we_o but_o gather_v up_o our_o thought_n that_o be_v busy_v so_o much_o about_o other_o thing_n and_o but_o consider_v this_o a_o little_a which_o if_o man_n will_v but_o do_v they_o will_v spend_v more_o time_n about_o it_o then_o they_o d_o you_o for_o now_o these_o thing_n be_v do_v but_o by_o the_o bye_n and_o have_v not_o that_o tithe_n of_o the_o time_n spend_v about_o they_o that_o shall_v be_v which_o we_o spend_v about_o other_o thing_n but_o let_v such_o know_v that_o it_o be_v but_o a_o folly_n to_o go_v about_o that_o work_n with_o a_o finger_n which_o require_v the_o strength_n of_o the_o whole_a body_n when_o this_o work_n of_o the_o build_n of_o grace_n do_v require_v the_o whole_a strength_n of_o a_o man_n and_o we_o put_v not_o our_o whole_a strength_n thereto_o it_o be_v no_o marvel_n if_o we_o do_v not_o prosper_v therein_o let_v we_o therefore_o serious_o consider_v our_o way_n let_v we_o consider_v with_o what_o tentation_n the_o devil_n daily_o assay_v we_o consider_v that_o it_o be_v as_o good_a get_v ground_n of_o the_o rage_a sea_n as_o of_o rage_a lust_n consider_v these_o thing_n with_o thyself_o i_o be_o very_o persuade_v that_o the_o chief_a cause_n why_o there_o be_v so_o much_o deadness_n in_o those_o that_o belong_v unto_o christ_n be_v because_o they_o consider_v not_o their_o way_n take_v time_n therefore_o to_o consider_v thy_o way_n it_o be_v no_o wonder_n to_o see_v man_n complain_v of_o their_o weakness_n when_o
continue_v argue_v not_o strength_n in_o the_o inward_a man_n or_o to_o have_v the_o understanding_n strong_a and_o yet_o to_o have_v the_o will_n and_o affection_n weak_a to_o good_a be_v not_o to_o be_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n but_o they_o must_v be_v all_o strong_a as_o for_o example_n a_o man_n or_o a_o woman_n be_v not_o say_v to_o be_v perfect_o beautiful_a except_o they_o be_v beautiful_a in_o all_o part_n for_o beauty_n be_v require_v in_o all_o part_n so_o likewise_o a_o man_n be_v not_o thorough_o strong_a but_o imperfect_o except_o he_o be_v strong_a in_o all_o part_n strong_a in_o the_o understanding_n strong_a in_o the_o will_n strong_a in_o the_o affection_n etc._n etc._n second_o i_o call_v it_o a_o temperature_n or_o right_a frame_n of_o the_o mind_n because_o it_o set_v the_o soul_n 2._o in_o order_n that_o be_v it_o set_v a_o new_a habit_n on_o the_o faculty_n and_o fix_v the_o soul_n on_o fit_a object_n for_o these_o habit_n the_o soul_n be_v before_o like_o a_o disorder_a clock_n that_o go_v at_o random_n every_o thing_n be_v out_o of_o its_o place_n but_o when_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n come_v into_o the_o soul_n it_o frame_v it_o anew_o and_o put_v it_o into_o a_o right_a temper_n again_o three_o i_o say_v whereby_o a_o man_n be_v able_a to_o please_v god_n in_o all_o thing_n 3._o because_o it_o set_v a_o good_a hue_n upon_o all_o our_o action_n for_o as_o varnish_v make_v all_o colour_n fresh_a so_o do_v the_o inward_a man_n it_o set_v a_o deep_a dye_n upon_o all_o our_o action_n a_o glass_n upon_o they_o and_o make_v they_o beautiful_a nothing_o without_o it_o will_v hold_v trial_n every_o thing_n that_o have_v the_o tincture_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n upon_o it_o will_v hold_v good_a this_o set_v the_o stamp_n of_o holiness_n upon_o they_o and_o therefore_o they_o be_v acceptable_a to_o god_n now_o that_o you_o may_v know_v the_o better_a what_o this_o strength_n be_v you_o must_v first_o labour_n to_o know_v what_o weakness_n be_v by_o weakness_n i_o do_v not_o mean_a weakness_n before_o a_o man_n be_v convert_v for_o that_o can_v proper_o be_v call_v weakness_n but_o wickedness_n and_o therefore_o know_v that_o this_o weakness_n which_o i_o speak_v of_o here_o which_o be_v proper_a unto_o christian_n be_v of_o two_o sort_n the_o first_o be_v weakness_n of_o grace_n as_o in_o the_o therefore_o if_o there_o be_v any_o here_o that_o be_v such_o that_o have_v once_o true_o love_v god_n and_o his_o kingdom_n but_o now_o be_v fall_v unto_o the_o love_n of_o the_o world_n that_o once_o be_v lively_a and_o quick_a to_o good_a but_o be_v now_o backward_o and_o cold_a my_o counsel_n to_o they_o shall_v be_v the_o same_o which_o christ_n give_v unto_o the_o church_n of_o ephesus_n revelation_n 2._o v._n 5._o to_o remember_v and_o repent_v and_o to_o do_v their_o first_o work_n lest_o their_o candlestick_a be_v take_v from_o they_o let_v they_o remember_v what_o they_o relapse_n to_o speak_v of_o this_o first_o there_o be_v two_o degree_n of_o this_o first_o sensible_a second_o unsensible_a first_o i_o say_v 1._o sensible_a and_o that_o be_v when_o the_o understanding_n be_v 2._o good_a but_o the_o will_n and_o affection_n be_v desperate_o 1._o wicked_a the_o understanding_n i_o say_v be_v good_a in_o regard_n of_o the_o good_a it_o know_v whereby_o the_o weakness_n that_o be_v in_o our_o will_n and_o affection_n become_v sensible_a unto_o we_o second_o there_o be_v a_o weakness_n unsensible_a and_o that_o be_v such_o as_o can_v be_v feel_v and_o 2._o this_o be_v when_o man_n change_v their_o opinion_n of_o sin_n when_o they_o have_v think_v otherwise_o of_o it_o then_o now_o they_o do_v as_o for_o example_n before_o they_o think_v every_o sin_n a_o great_a sin_n but_o now_o little_a or_o none_o at_o all_o now_o as_o touch_v that_o weakness_n which_o follow_v upon_o the_o new_a birth_n there_o be_v two_o degree_n likewise_o of_o this_o the_o first_o be_v general_a the_o second_o particular_a the_o first_o be_v a_o general_a weakness_n and_o that_o be_v when_o the_o judgement_n will_n and_o affection_n be_v 1._o all_o weak_a when_o a_o man_n be_v weak_a in_o all_o the_o whole_a part_n of_o the_o soul_n the_o second_o degree_n be_v a_o particular_a weakness_n and_o that_o be_v when_o a_o man_n be_v general_o 2._o strong_a and_o yet_o weak_a in_o some_o part_n as_o for_o example_n a_o ship_n may_v be_v strong_o build_v or_o general_o strong_a and_o yet_o have_v a_o leak_n in_o it_o can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v strong_a in_o all_o part_n because_o it_o have_v that_o leak_n that_o be_v a_o weakness_n in_o one_o part_n of_o it_o so_o the_o soul_n may_v be_v general_o strong_a and_o yet_o weak_a in_o some_o particular_a therefore_o a_o man_n must_v take_v heed_n of_o all_o particular_a weakness_n now_o by_o way_n of_o opposition_n unto_o these_o weakness_n you_o may_v conceive_v of_o inward_a strength_n but_o to_o come_v unto_o the_o reason_n wherefore_o we_o shall_v strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n and_o they_o be_v these_o the_o first_o reason_n wherefore_o you_o shall_v be_v strong_a 1._o in_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v this_o because_o it_o will_v fit_v you_o for_o many_o employment_n it_o will_v make_v we_o go_v through_o much_o work_n with_o great_a ease_n to_o perform_v the_o weighty_a duty_n of_o religion_n in_o such_o manner_n as_o otherwise_o we_o can_v never_o be_v able_a to_o do_v and_o this_o shall_v persuade_v man_n the_o rather_o because_o god_n reward_v man_n according_a to_o their_o work_n it_o be_v not_o riches_n beauty_n honour_n or_o dignity_n that_o prevail_v with_o god_n in_o his_o give_v the_o reward_n but_o according_a to_o our_o work_n so_o shall_v his_o reward_n be_v and_o this_o reason_n shall_v make_v man_n to_o haste_n to_o get_v into_o christ_n because_o the_o long_o they_o be_v in_o christ_n the_o strong_a they_o be_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n the_o second_o reason_n wherefore_o you_o shall_v desire_v to_o be_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v this_o because_o it_o 2._o bring_v most_o comfort_n and_o cheerfulness_n into_o the_o soul_n 1_o because_o it_o make_v we_o do_v all_o that_o we_o do_v with_o facility_n and_o easiness_n so_o that_o that_o which_o we_o 1._o do_v be_v easy_a unto_o we_o as_o for_o example_n a_o man_n that_o be_v weak_a in_o judgement_n and_o weak_a in_o understanding_n any_o high_a point_n of_o religion_n be_v weariness_n unto_o he_o because_o he_o want_v a_o capacity_n to_o conceive_v now_o that_o which_o be_v not_o right_o conceive_v or_o understand_v we_o have_v little_a or_o no_o comfort_n or_o delight_n in_o it_o but_o it_o be_v irkesomenesse_n and_o weariness_n unto_o our_o nature_n whereas_o the_o same_o thing_n unto_o a_o man_n that_o be_v of_o a_o large_a capacity_n be_v easy_a unto_o he_o and_o he_o delight_v in_o they_o 2._o the_o more_o strength_n a_o man_n have_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n the_o more_o health_n he_o have_v in_o his_o 2._o soul_n for_o as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o body_n the_o more_o natural_a strength_n the_o more_o health_n so_o in_o the_o soul_n the_o more_o strength_n in_o the_o inward_a man_n the_o more_o healthful_a in_o grace_n 3._o it_o bring_v the_o more_o cheerfulness_n into_o the_o heart_n because_o it_o bring_v christ_n and_o god_n 3._o thither_o who_o be_v the_o god_n of_o all_o comfort_n and_o consolation_n as_o the_o apostle_n call_v he_o there_o for_o that_o must_v needs_o be_v the_o best_a thing_n in_o the_o world_n to_o
be_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n and_o the_o joyful_a heart_n that_o have_v his_o inhabit_v with_o god_n and_o christ._n 4._o because_o it_o bring_v sufficiency_n and_o plenty_n of_o all_o good_a into_o the_o soul_n and_o we_o say_v that_o if_o a_o man_n have_v 4._o a_o good_a outward_a estate_n he_o be_v like_a to_o hold_v out_o if_o a_o famine_n shall_v come_v so_o it_o be_v with_o a_o christian_a if_o he_o be_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n though_o a_o famine_n shall_v come_v he_o be_v likely_a to_o hold_v out_o and_o keep_v that_o which_o he_o have_v but_o on_o the_o contrary_a when_o a_o man_n be_v poor_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o body_n that_o be_v weak_a every_o thing_n that_o it_o have_v be_v ready_a to_o be_v take_v away_o but_o as_o a_o bowl_n that_o have_v a_o bias_n the_o strength_n of_o the_o arm_n take_v away_o the_o bias_n so_o strength_n in_o the_o inward_a man_n take_v away_o the_o bias_n of_o shame_n and_o reproach_n which_o otherwise_o will_v draw_v we_o to_o despair_v and_o make_v we_o to_o go_v on_o stout_o and_o to_o bear_v affliction_n strong_o babe_n you_o know_v can_v bear_v that_o which_o a_o strong_a man_n can_v neither_o be_v they_o able_a to_o hold_v out_o in_o any_o thing_n as_o a_o strong_a man_n be_v able_a therefore_o that_o you_o may_v hold_v out_o labour_v to_o be_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n 5._o because_o it_o strengthen_v a_o man_n against_o temptation_n and_o 5._o therefore_o the_o apostle_n say_v be_v steadfast_a and_o unmooveable_a for_o it_o make_v we_o to_o stand_v fast_o in_o christ_n so_o that_o nothing_o shall_v break_v we_o off_o from_o christ_n neither_o temptation_n nor_o affliction_n nor_o reproach_n contrary_a what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o temptation_n press_v man_n so_o sore_o as_o they_o do_v but_o because_o they_o be_v not_o careful_a to_o grow_v more_o strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n this_o show_n how_o they_o be_v to_o be_v blame_v that_o 1_o seek_v this_o strength_n lest_o of_o all_o or_o not_o at_o all_o for_o let_v we_o look_v upon_o man_n and_o we_o shall_v see_v how_o busy_a they_o be_v to_o get_v the_o riches_n and_o honour_n and_o pleasure_n of_o the_o body_n but_o few_o or_o none_o regard_v this_o strength_n which_o be_v the_o riches_n and_o honour_n and_o pleasure_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o the_o health_n beauty_n and_o strength_n of_o the_o outward_a man_n all_o take_v great_a care_n spend_v much_o time_n about_o they_o much_o labour_n in_o they_o to_o add_v any_o thing_n unto_o they_o but_o for_o the_o beauty_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n they_o care_v not_o for_o that_o they_o respect_v not_o that_o all_o their_o care_n be_v for_o their_o back_n and_o belly_n still_o regard_v the_o thing_n that_o may_v raise_v their_o outward_a estate_n but_o never_o mind_v the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n which_o will_v appear_v more_o plain_o by_o this_o ask_v but_o such_o man_n why_o they_o do_v not_o pray_v or_o hear_v or_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n often_o than_o they_o do_v to_o this_o you_o shall_v hear_v they_o answer_v that_o they_o can_v for_o business_n they_o have_v great_a employment_n in_o the_o world_n and_o they_o must_v not_o neglect_v they_o to_o do_v such_o and_o such_o thing_n as_o if_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v neither_o worth_a the_o get_n or_o have_v and_o yet_o these_o man_n will_v be_v as_o good_a man_n as_o the_o best_a again_o see_v it_o in_o yourselves_o this_o day_n be_v appoint_v for_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n but_o how_o do_v you_o neglect_v it_o how_o often_o be_v you_o in_o prayer_n and_o holy_a meditation_n before_o or_o how_o often_o since_o have_v you_o serious_o consider_v on_o the_o thing_n that_o you_o have_v hear_v or_o how_o have_v you_o cast_v aside_o your_o occasion_n of_o business_n in_o your_o calling_n or_o whether_o be_v they_o not_o now_o fresh_a in_o your_o memory_n nay_o do_v not_o your_o heart_n run_v after_o they_o even_o now_o when_o i_o be_o persuade_v you_o to_o the_o contrary_a if_o they_o be_v whatsoever_o you_o say_v of_o yourselves_o you_o have_v not_o the_o care_n you_o ought_v to_o have_v to_o grow_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n and_o yet_o that_o you_o may_v see_v that_o you_o have_v good_a reason_n to_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n first_o you_o old_a man_n consider_v you_o and_o bethink_v with_o yourselves_o how_o soon_o your_o inward_a man_n may_v 1._o be_v throw_v out_o of_o door_n therefore_o you_o have_v great_a cause_n to_o strengthen_v it_o and_o grow_v strong_a in_o it_o second_o you_o young_a man_n as_o for_o you_o you_o have_v need_n to_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n because_o 2._o as_o there_o be_v a_o time_n of_o spring_v and_o grow_v strong_a for_o you_o in_o the_o inward_a man_n so_o there_o be_v a_o time_n of_o not_o spring_v that_o be_v when_o you_o will_v have_v much_o to_o do_v to_o keep_v that_o which_o you_o have_v without_o increase_v of_o it_o therefore_o while_o the_o time_n be_v take_v heed_n of_o neglect_v the_o time_n it_o be_v no_o rule_n to_o be_v follow_v that_o god_n call_v at_o all_o time_n for_o thou_o know_v not_o whether_o he_o will_v call_v thou_o and_o therefore_o do_v thou_o labour_v to_o grow_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n &_o to_o persuade_v you_o the_o more_o consider_v these_o particular_n 1._o consider_v the_o excellency_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n that_o 1._o it_o will_v fit_v you_o for_o great_a imploymenr_n as_o for_o example_n it_o will_v make_v you_o to_o see_v god_n in_o his_o holiness_n and_o to_o converse_v with_o god_n &_o to_o have_v such_o a_o holy_a familiarity_n with_o he_o as_o will_v joy_v the_o soul_n this_o will_v bring_v you_o so_o acquaint_v with_o god_n that_o you_o will_v be_v esteem_v of_o he_o as_o one_o of_o his_o familiar_n therefore_o this_o shall_v persuade_v you_o to_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n second_o consider_v that_o you_o be_v to_o be_v make_v like_o 2._o unto_o the_o image_n of_o god_n if_o you_o will_v be_v save_v but_o this_o can_v be_v except_o you_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n say_v 1_o pet._n 1._o as_o he_o that_o have_v call_v you_o be_v holy_a so_o be_v you_o holy_a in_o all_o manner_n of_o conversation_n that_o be_v see_v you_o be_v call_v unto_o such_o a_o high_a place_n as_o to_o be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n by_o grace_n what_o a_o base_a thing_n be_v it_o for_o you_o to_o stoop_v unto_o base_a thing_n what_o a_o base_a thing_n be_v it_o that_o a_o eagle_n shall_v stoop_v at_o fly_n and_o although_o it_o be_v unseemly_a in_o that_o creature_n yet_o man_n do_v the_o like_a and_o be_v not_o ashamed_a man_n will_v stoop_v to_o the_o world_n and_o will_v be_v any_o man_n vassal_n and_o be_v any_o thing_n what_o any_o will_v have_v they_o to_o be_v if_o it_o may_v but_o enlarge_v their_o outward_a estate_n but_o belove_v there_o be_v a_o great_a spiritual_o strong_a because_o he_o can_v do_v spiritual_a action_n in_o a_o spiritual_a manner_n for_o he_o go_v about_o that_o with_o a_o natural_a strength_n which_o shall_v be_v perform_v with_o a_o spiritual_a strength_n 1_o pet._n 1._o 5._o who_o be_v keep_v by_o the_o power_n of_o god_n through_o faith_n unto_o salvation_n when_o a_o 5._o man_n be_v true_o regenerate_v when_o he_o have_v not_o power_n of_o his_o own_o to_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n than_o he_o have_v the_o spirit_n to_o help_v he_o that_o be_v they_o be_v not_o only_o keep_v by_o the_o power_n from_o evil_a but_o also_o they_o be_v enable_v to_o do_v good_a by_o it_o the_o five_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o natural_a and_o spiritual_a strength_n be_v this_o that_o which_o proceed_v difference_n from_o the_o spirit_n be_v always_o join_v with_o reluctancy_n of_o the_o will_n but_o in_o the_o natural_a strength_n there_o as_o no_o reluctancy_n because_o there_o be_v no_o contrary_n but_o in_o the_o spiritual_a man_n there_o be_v two_o contrary_n the_o flesh_n and_o the_o spirit_n and_o you_o know_v these_o can_v never_o agree_v but_o they_o be_v still_o oppose_v one_o another_o as_o for_o example_n a_o man_n that_o be_v go_v up_o a_o hill_n he_o be_v in_o labour_n and_o pain_n but_o a_o man_n that_o be_v go_v down_o a_o hill_n go_v with_o much_o ease_n so_o there_o be_v much_o labour_n and_o pain_n which_o a_o spiritual_a man_n take_v to_o subdue_v the_o flesh_n but_o the_o natural_a man_n have_v no_o reluctancy_n at_o all_o he_o have_v no_o fight_v and_o struggle_v with_o corruption_n but_o he_o go_v without_o pain_n because_o he_o be_v but_o one_o and_o one_o man_n can_v be_v divide_v against_o itself_o but_o in_o every_o spiritual_a man_n there_o be_v two_o man_n the_o old_a man_n and_o the_o new_a man_n the_o flesh_n and_o the_o spirit_n and_o hence_o grow_v that_o spiritual_a combat_n gal._n 5._o 17._o the_o flesh_n lust_v against_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n against_o the_o flesh_n that_o they_o can_v do_v the_o thing_n that_o they_o will_v these_o two_o man_n in_o a_o regenerate_a man_n strive_v for_o mastery_n and_o so_o hinder_v one_o the_o other_o yet_o know_v also_o that_o in_o the_o natural_a man_n there_o may_v be_v reluctancy_n in_o the_o will_n against_o some_o particular_a sin_n as_o covetousness_n may_v strive_v against_o pride_n and_o pride_n against_o nigardnesse_n yet_o not_o fight_v against_o it_o as_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n but_o as_o it_o cross_v and_o thwart_v his_o pride_n again_o know_v that_o a_o natural_a man_n may_v have_v reluctancy_n in_o some_o part_n of_o the_o soul_n as_o in_o the_o conscience_n which_o be_v sensible_a of_o sin_n and_o hence_o it_o may_v convince_v the_o man_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o faculty_n notwithstanding_o they_o be_v at_o peace_n but_o where_o this_o spiritual_a strength_n be_v it_o be_v in_o all_o part_n not_o one_o faculty_n against_o another_o but_o all_o be_v fight_v against_o sin_n in_o the_o whole_a man_n now_o the_o reason_n that_o there_o be_v not_o this_o reluctancy_n against_o sin_n in_o every_o faculty_n in_o the_o natural_a man_n be_v because_o he_o want_v save_v grace_n grace_n be_v not_o in_o the_o faculty_n opposite_a unto_o the_o corruption_n that_o be_v in_o it_o but_o in_o the_o holy_a man_n there_o be_v and_o therefore_o he_o be_v like_o rebecka_n they_o have_v two_o in_o they_o jacob_n and_o esau_n the_o flesh_n and_o the_o spirit_n and_o paul_n complain_v of_o so_o much_o rom._n 7._o i_o find_v another_o law_n in_o my_o member_n rebel_a against_o the_o law_n of_o my_o mind_n that_o be_v i_o find_v 23._o something_o in_o i_o that_o be_v contrary_a unto_o i_o in_o my_o member_n that_o be_v in_o my_o body_n and_o soul_n they_o because_o he_o be_v not_o strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n he_o promise_v but_o he_o perform_v not_o he_o yield_v and_o yield_v not_o he_o yield_v to_o something_o but_o not_o to_o every_o thing_n and_o thus_o much_o for_o this_o last_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o natural_a strength_n and_o the_o spiritual_a strength_n be_v it_o so_o that_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v to_o be_v desire_v above_o all_o thing_n then_o as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o 2._o first_o place_n for_o reproof_n so_o in_o the_o second_o place_n it_o may_v serve_v for_o exhortation_n to_o all_o you_o to_o do_v it_o in_o the_o three_o place_n this_o may_v serve_v for_o direction_n 3_o for_o you_o may_v say_v unto_o i_o you_o have_v show_v we_o what_o this_o inward_a man_n be_v and_o the_o fruit_n but_o barren_a do_v what_o you_o will_v to_o it_o the_o soil_n be_v naught_o for_o the_o spirit_n have_v not_o yet_o till_v the_o heart_n and_o sow_v in_o it_o the_o first_o beginning_n of_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n the_o first_o mean_n to_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n be_v to_o abound_v in_o spiritual_a knowledge_n because_o the_o mean_a more_o knowledge_n the_o more_o strength_n for_o the_o spiritual_a knowledge_n of_o divine_a truth_n be_v the_o strength_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o as_o the_o soul_n be_v unto_o the_o body_n so_o be_v the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o word_n unto_o the_o inward_a man_n the_o body_n be_v dead_a without_o the_o soul_n not_o able_a to_o do_v any_o thing_n so_o the_o inward_a man_n without_o this_o spiritual_a strength_n which_o be_v wrought_v in_o the_o soul_n by_o the_o save_a knowledge_n of_o the_o word_n be_v nothing_o but_o weakness_n thereforé_fw-it they_fw-mi apostle_n say_v 1_o pet._n 2._o 2._o as_o new_o bear_v babe_n desire_v the_o sincere_a milk_n of_o 2._o word_n that_o you_o may_v grow_v by_o it_o knowledge_n in_o the_o word_n will_v make_v they_o grow_v in_o christ_n the_o contrary_a unto_o this_o we_o see_v the_o apostle_n upbraid_v in_o the_o corinthian_n 1_o cor._n 3._o 1._o and_o heb._n 5._o 13._o because_o they_o be_v weak_a in_o knowledge_n he_o call_v they_o 1._o babe_n for_o say_v he_o he_o that_o be_v not_o expert_a in_o the_o word_n of_o righteousness_n be_v a_o babe_n therefore_o labour_v 13._o to_o abound_v in_o spiritual_a knowledge_n i_o press_v this_o the_o more_o because_o i_o fear_v many_o of_o you_o be_v weak_a because_o you_o be_v ignorant_a you_o want_v this_o spiritual_a knowledge_n you_o know_v in_o our_o ordinary_a talk_n we_o count_v ignorance_n folly_n when_o a_o man_n do_v any_o thing_n that_o he_o shall_v not_o do_v or_o will_v not_o do_v if_o he_o do_v but_o understand_v himself_o we_o say_v that_o man_n be_v weak_a in_o judgement_n or_o it_o be_v folly_n in_o he_o sure_o this_o weakness_n in_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v folly_n indeed_o and_o a_o man_n can_v show_v
his_o weakness_n more_o than_o to_o be_v weak_a in_o spiritual_a knowledge_n and_o yet_o you_o must_v know_v that_o a_o man_n may_v have_v much_o knowledge_n as_o worldly_a knowledge_n and_o the_o knowledge_n of_o divine_a truth_n and_o yet_o be_v but_o weak_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n for_o there_o be_v a_o knowledge_n of_o art_n which_o fill_v the_o brain_n with_o knowledge_n but_o the_o spirit_n go_v no_o further_o that_o be_v it_o do_v not_o sanctify_v that_o knowledge_n in_o the_o heart_n again_o there_o be_v a_o knowledge_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v a_o operative_a work_a knowledge_n which_o go_v with_o this_o other_o knowledge_n and_o lead_v it_o to_o sanctification_n and_o be_v practical_a but_o yet_o i_o say_v you_o must_v know_v before_o you_o can_v be_v strong_a there_o must_v be_v some_o proportion_n between_o the_o spiritual_a knowledge_n and_o the_o spiritual_a strength_n as_o for_o example_n one_o man_n eat_v and_o be_v fat_a another_o man_n eat_v and_o be_v still_o lean_a so_o some_o have_v asmuch_o as_o other_o have_v and_o yet_o be_v not_o so_o strong_a as_o other_o and_o yet_o we_o say_v fatness_n come_v by_o eat_v so_o do_v the_o strength_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n by_o knowledge_n and_o where_o the_o lord_n work_v by_o his_o spirit_n by_o his_o spirit_n i_o say_v the_o most_o knowledge_n there_o be_v most_o strength_n therefore_o i_o beseech_v you_o labour_n for_o a_o full_a measure_n of_o save_a knowledge_n for_o a_o work_n purge_a convince_a operative_a and_o powerful_a knowledge_n and_o this_o i_o do_v not_o only_o speak_v unto_o you_o that_o be_v weak_a but_o also_o unto_o you_o that_o be_v strong_a that_o you_o be_v careful_a to_o add_v unto_o your_o knowledge_n for_o what_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o you_o do_v not_o grow_v in_o grace_n but_o because_o you_o be_v not_o careful_a to_o add_v more_o knowledge_n unto_o that_o which_o you_o have_v it_o may_v be_v you_o pick_v some_o good_a thing_n from_o some_o sermon_n or_o good_a book_n but_o present_o you_o forget_v it_o you_o do_v not_o make_v it_o your_o own_o by_o meditation_n and_o so_o it_o do_v you_o no_o good_a but_o if_o you_o will_v be_v careful_a to_o add_v unto_o it_o you_o will_v grow_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n than_o you_o do_v and_o here_o be_v the_o misery_n of_o we_o builder_n other_o builder_n when_o they_o have_v build_v a_o house_n the_o owner_n look_v to_o it_o himself_o and_o keep_v it_o in_o repair_n but_o when_o we_o have_v do_v what_o we_o can_v to_o build_v you_o up_o in_o the_o inward_a man_n and_o think_v that_o you_o will_v put_v to_o your_o hand_n yourselves_o when_o we_o be_v to_o further_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n you_o begin_v to_o pull_v down_o your_o build_n again_o yourselves_o by_o your_o loose_a life_n by_o follow_v your_o pleasure_n your_o sport_v and_o game_n and_o profane_v of_o the_o lord_n day_n therefore_o you_o must_v labour_v to_o grow_v in_o knowledge_n if_o you_o will_v grow_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n the_o second_o mean_n to_o be_v use_v if_o you_o will_v mean_n grow_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v this_o you_o must_v be_v diligent_a in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n as_o the_o wise_a man_n say_v the_o hand_n of_o the_o diligent_a make_v rich_a as_o diligence_n in_o a_o call_n make_v rich_a so_o where_o there_o be_v much_o diligence_n in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n there_o be_v much_o strength_n in_o the_o inward_a man_n but_o no_o man_n get_v spiritual_a strength_n save_v they_o that_o be_v diligent_a and_o therefore_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o man_n be_v not_o strong_a in_o this_o spiritual_a strength_n because_o like_o the_o sluggard_n they_o be_v not_o diligent_a in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n they_o take_v no_o pain_n for_o grace_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o they_o get_v no_o increase_n for_o according_a unto_o the_o proportion_n of_o your_o pain_n so_o be_v the_o inward_a man_n strengthen_v and_o as_o you_o use_v they_o more_o diligent_o so_o you_o find_v the_o strength_n of_o they_o more_o operative_a and_o powerful_a for_o it_o be_v in_o the_o soul_n as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o body_n if_o you_o be_v not_o diligent_a and_o careful_a to_o feed_v the_o body_n it_o will_v wither_v and_o consume_v away_o and_o grow_v weak_a so_o if_o you_o feed_v not_o the_o soul_n diligent_o and_o use_v the_o mean_n constant_o you_o will_v breed_v weakness_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o more_o secure_a and_o remiss_a you_o be_v in_o the_o performance_n of_o holy_a duty_n the_o weak_a you_o be_v it_o may_v be_v you_o think_v it_o will_v not_o weaken_v you_o to_o neglect_v private_a prayer_n but_o omit_v it_o once_o and_o it_o will_v make_v you_o careless_a and_o the_o more_o you_o neglect_v the_o more_o unfit_a and_o undisposed_a you_o will_v find_v yourselves_o so_o you_o may_v think_v you_o may_v profane_v one_o sabbath_n neglect_v therein_o the_o duty_n require_v and_o serve_v not_o god_n but_o your_o own_o lust_n but_o belove_v it_o will_v make_v you_o secure_a the_o more_o a_o man_n do_v in_o this_o kind_a the_o more_o he_o may_v do_v for_o this_o be_v true_a in_o every_o art_n every_o act_n beget_v a_o habit_n and_o a_o habit_n bring_v custom_n so_o it_o be_v as_o true_a in_o good_a thing_n the_o beginning_n of_o good_a bring_v many_o particular_a good_a thing_n and_o therefore_o if_o you_o can_v but_o get_v your_o heart_n in_o a_o frame_n of_o grace_n you_o shall_v find_v a_o supply_n of_o grace_n because_o christ_n say_v whosoever_o have_v to_o he_o shall_v be_v give_v he_o that_o have_v grace_n and_o be_v careful_a in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n by_o god_n appointment_n he_o shall_v thrive_v in_o holiness_n for_o if_o you_o but_o once_o get_v the_o beginning_n of_o save_a grace_n and_o be_v industrious_a and_o vigilant_a and_o careful_a to_o employ_v they_o you_o will_v in_o time_n grow_v strong_a you_o know_v what_o christ_n say_v unto_o the_o servant_n that_o have_v use_v his_o talon_n well_o he_o have_v more_o give_v he_o so_o if_o you_o be_v diligent_a in_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n the_o inward_a man_n will_v grow_v strong_a but_o for_o the_o use_n of_o the_o mean_n observe_v these_o rule_n the_o first_o rule_n that_o i_o will_v have_v you_o observe_v if_o you_o will_v have_v the_o mean_n effectual_a be_v this_o 1._o you_o must_v use_v all_o the_o mean_n for_o if_o you_o use_v but_o a_o part_n of_o the_o mean_v you_o will_v not_o grow_v strong_a at_o it_o be_v with_o the_o body_n so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o inward_a man_n a_o man_n for_o the_o health_n and_o growth_n of_o the_o body_n will_v use_v all_o mean_n labour_n in_o health_n physic_n in_o sickness_n recreation_n for_o the_o whet_n of_o the_o faculty_n in_o a_o word_n he_o will_v use_v every_o thing_n that_o he_o may_v strengthen_v the_o body_n thus_o you_o must_v do_v for_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n you_o must_v use_v all_o mean_n as_o hear_v the_o word_n receive_v the_o sacrament_n prayer_n meditation_n conference_n the_o communion_n of_o saint_n particular_a resolution_n to_o good_a or_o else_o the_o inward_a man_n will_v not_o grow_v strong_a these_o be_v the_o food_n that_o the_o inward_a man_n feed_v upon_o it_o be_v with_o the_o inward_a man_n as_o it_o be_v with_o a_o plant_n if_o you_o will_v have_v a_o plant_n to_o grow_v than_o you_o must_v set_v it_o in_o a_o good_a soil_n you_o must_v dig_v about_o it_o and_o dung_n it_o but_o if_o you_o be_v careless_a where_o you_o set_v it_o it_o will_v not_o prosper_v and_o thrive_v even_o so_o if_o you_o do_v not_o add_v fatness_n of_o soil_n unto_o the_o beginning_n of_o grace_n if_o you_o do_v not_o use_v all_o the_o mean_n as_o the_o communion_n of_o saint_n and_o prayer_n the_o inward_a man_n will_v not_o grow_v strong_a but_o wither_v and_o die_v you_o will_v be_v dwarf_n in_o grace_n and_o holiness_n the_o second_o rule_n if_o you_o will_v have_v the_o mean_n effectual_a be_v this_o you_o must_v look_v that_o you_o perform_v rule_n holy_a duty_n strong_o for_o then_o the_o mean_n strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n when_o they_o be_v do_v with_o strong_a affection_n when_o he_o use_v they_o not_o remisse_o and_o cold_o for_o remiss_a action_n weakness_n the_o habit_n as_o for_o example_n take_v water_n that_o be_v exceed_o hot_a and_o put_v cold_a water_n to_o it_o and_o you_o will_v weaken_v it_o so_o perform_v holy_a duty_n and_o use_v the_o mean_n of_o grace_n remiss_o and_o they_o will_v weaken_v the_o habit_n to_o good_a it_o will_v work_v a_o indisposition_n in_o the_o soul_n therefore_o do_v they_o strong_o with_o much_o zeal_n and_o strong_a
he_o shall_v say_v if_o you_o will_v know_v what_o will_v strengthen_v you_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n hence_o note_v this_o point_n that_o whatsoever_o save_v or_o sanctify_a grace_n or_o strength_n of_o grace_n every_o man_n have_v it_o all_o proceed_v from_o doctrine_n the_o sanctify_a spirit_n i_o say_v all_o the_o save_a grace_n all_o strength_n of_o grace_n come_v from_o the_o spirit_n yet_o do_v not_o mistake_v i_o as_o if_o i_o do_v exclude_v the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n for_o they_o work_v together_o in_o every_o act_n the_o father_n work_v not_o without_o the_o son_n the_o son_n work_v not_o without_o the_o father_n the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n work_v not_o without_o the_o spirit_n neither_o do_v the_o spirit_n work_v without_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n for_o what_o one_o do_v all_o do_v but_o i_o ascribe_v the_o work_n of_o sanctification_n unto_o the_o spirit_n because_o it_o be_v the_o proper_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n to_o sanctify_v and_o he_o be_v the_o strengthner_n of_o all_o grace_n that_o be_v all_o grace_n come_v from_o the_o father_n as_o the_o first_o cause_n of_o all_o thing_n and_o then_o throùgh_o christ_n by_o the_o spirit_n grace_n be_v wrought_v in_o the_o soul_n therefore_o these_o three_o distinction_n of_o the_o trinity_n be_v good_a the_o father_n be_v of_o himself_o the_o son_n be_v of_o the_o father_n and_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v of_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n that_o be_v the_o holy_a ghost_n proceed_v from_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n and_o be_v send_v unto_o the_o heart_n of_o his_o child_n to_o work_v grace_n and_o holiness_n in_o they_o and_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v so_o that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v the_o only_a worker_n and_o strengthner_n of_o grace_n because_o proceed_v from_o such_o a_o holy_a fountain_n as_o the_o father_n and_o the_o son_n be_v he_o must_v needs_o be_v holy_a and_o the_o way_n to_o get_v sanctification_n and_o holiness_n be_v to_o get_v the_o holy_a spirit_n for_o in_o a_o thing_n that_o be_v send_v to_o sanctify_v two_o thing_n be_v require_v first_o he_o that_o be_v send_v to_o sanctify_v must_v proceed_v from_o a_o holy_a fountain_n but_o the_o spirit_n do_v proceed_v from_o a_o most_o holy_a and_o pure_a god_n therefore_o it_o can_v choose_v but_o be_v a_o holy_a work_n that_o he_o work_v second_o the_o second_o thing_n require_v in_o he_o that_o be_v send_v to_o sanctify_v be_v this_o that_o he_o subsist_v in_o sanctification_n that_o be_v that_o he_o depend_v not_o upon_o another_o for_o sanctification_n but_o that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o sanctify_v himself_o now_o this_o be_v the_o excellency_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n he_o be_v sanctification_n and_o holiness_n itself_o that_o be_v subsist_v in_o sanctification_n and_o abound_v in_o holiness_n and_o therefore_o able_a to_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n but_o that_o you_o may_v more_o full_o understand_v this_o point_n i_o will_v show_v you_o how_o the_o spirit_n strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n and_o work_v holiness_n and_o sanctification_n and_o this_o will_v appear_v in_o four_o thing_n the_o first_o way_n how_o the_o spirit_n strengthen_v grace_n in_o the_o soul_n be_v this_o by_o give_v unto_o the_o soul_n a_o effectual_a worke._n operative_a and_o powerful_a faculty_n and_o that_o be_v do_v by_o rear_v the_o inward_a man_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o set_v up_o the_o build_n of_o grace_n and_o this_o he_o do_v by_o shed_v abroad_o in_o the_o heart_n the_o bless_a effect_n of_o grace_n unto_o every_o faculty_n as_o the_o blood_n be_v infuse_v into_o every_o vein_n or_o as_o the_o soul_n go_v through_o every_o part_n of_o the_o body_n and_o so_o give_v life_n unto_o it_o so_o do_v the_o spirit_n go_v through_o all_o the_o part_n of_o the_o soul_n by_o infuse_v spiritual_a life_n and_o power_n into_o they_o and_o therefore_o the_o apostle_n call_v it_o eph._n 1._o his_o effectual_a power_n that_o be_v he_o have_v such_o efficacy_n in_o work_v that_o he_o infuse_v spiritual_a life_n unto_o the_o whole_a soul_n the_o second_o way_n how_o the_o spirit_n strengthen_v worke._n grace_n be_v this_o when_o he_o have_v set_v up_o the_o building_n and_o sweep_v every_o corner_n of_o the_o soul_n than_o he_o enable_v the_o soul_n to_o do_v more_o than_o it_o can_v do_v by_o nature_n by_o put_v new_a habit_n and_o quality_n in_o the_o soul_n as_o first_o when_o a_o man_n can_v do_v more_o than_o a_o natural_a man_n can_v do_v by_o nature_n than_o the_o spirit_n have_v add_v new_a habit_n as_o for_o example_n any_o hand_n can_v cut_v with_o a_o chissell_n or_o the_o like_a instrument_n but_o if_o he_o can_v by_o it_o make_v a_o picture_n this_o be_v a_o work_n above_o nature_n because_o no_o man_n can_v do_v it_o unless_o he_o have_v be_v reach_v it_o so_o when_o the_o spirit_n come_v into_o the_o heart_n than_o it_o make_v a_o man_n to_o do_v more_o then_o natural_o he_o can_v do_v water_n you_o know_v the_o nature_n of_o it_o be_v cold_a but_o if_o you_o will_v have_v it_o of_o another_o quality_n than_o you_o must_v put_v a_o quality_n of_o fire_n into_o it_o so_o the_o soul_n be_v dead_a and_o cold_a by_o nature_n but_o if_o a_o quality_n of_o the_o fire_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v add_v unto_o it_o than_o it_o will_v be_v able_a to_o do_v more_o than_o it_o natural_o can_v do_v therefore_o examine_v what_o new_a habit_n and_o quality_n be_v in_o you_o whether_o you_o have_v a_o new_a habit_n of_o patience_n love_n hope_v and_o experience_n that_o be_v as_o patience_n beget_v experience_n and_o experience_n hope_v so_o where_o the_o spirit_n be_v it_o do_v beget_v new_a habit_n and_o quality_n in_o the_o soul_n by_o which_o it_o be_v able_a to_o do_v more_o then_o natural_o it_o can_v do_v as_o i_o say_v it_o first_o build_v the_o house_n and_o sweep_v the_o room_n and_o then_o it_o fit_v and_o furnish_v the_o room_n with_o new_a habit_n and_o quality_n of_o grace_n the_o three_o way_n how_o the_o spirit_n strengthen_v worke._n grace_n be_v this_o when_o it_o have_v give_v we_o new_a habit_n than_o it_o enable_v and_o help_v we_o to_o use_v these_o habit_n to_o good_a and_o herein_o appear_v the_o power_n and_o excellency_n of_o the_o spirit_n not_o only_o to_o give_v spiritual_a life_n and_o strength_n but_o also_o to_o enable_v we_o to_o use_v that_o strength_n for_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n there_o may_v be_v quality_n and_o habit_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o yet_o want_v power_n to_o use_v they_o as_o for_o example_n a_o man_n that_o be_v asleep_a he_o have_v habit_n and_o quality_n but_o he_o want_v power_n to_o use_v they_o or_o as_o a_o man_n that_o have_v a_o instrument_n that_o will_v sound_v well_o but_o he_o want_v skill_n to_o use_v it_o so_o many_o man_n they_o have_v habit_n and_o quality_n but_o because_o they_o want_v power_n to_o use_v they_o therefore_o they_o be_v not_o strengthen_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n but_o he_o that_o have_v the_o spirit_n have_v withal_o power_n to_o use_v those_o habit_n to_o good_a therefore_o it_o be_v say_v that_o they_o speak_v as_o the_o spirit_n give_v they_o utterance_n that_o be_v they_o have_v power_n from_o the_o spirit_n to_o speak_v to_o do_v to_o use_v those_o habit_n which_o be_v in_o they_o thus_o samson_n by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o spirit_n have_v power_n to_o use_v his_o strength_n act_v 4._o 32._o it_o be_v say_v that_o the_o apostle_n speak_v bold_o that_o be_v they_o have_v power_n for_o you_o must_v know_v that_o there_o 32._o may_v be_v common_a grace_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o yet_o want_v power_n but_o when_o the_o spirit_n come_v than_o it_o put_v strength_n in_o the_o inward_a man_n to_o work_v according_o thus_o it_o be_v say_v that_o the_o spirit_n come_v upon_o saul_n and_o he_o prophesy_v that_o be_v he_o be_v able_a to_o do_v more_o then_o before_o he_o can_v do_v and_o yet_o know_v that_o you_o may_v have_v true_a grace_n and_o yet_o now_o and_o then_o for_o the_o present_a want_n action_n you_o may_v want_v a_o power_n to_o do_v aught_o with_o it_o and_o it_o be_v then_o when_o the_o spirit_n seem_v to_o absent_v himself_o from_o the_o soul_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o the_o apostle_n speak_v of_o in_o heb._n 11._o brethren_n you_o have_v forget_v the_o consolation_n that_o be_v your_o spiritual_a strength_n and_o power_n be_v hide_v as_o dead_a and_o forget_v but_o the_o spirit_n will_v return_v and_o you_o shall_v find_v your_o power_n to_o good_a again_o the_o four_o way_n whereby_o the_o spirit_n strengthen_v worke._n grace_n in_o the_o soul_n be_v by_o give_v efficacy_n and_o power_n unto_o the_o mean_n of_o growth_n which_o be_v a_o
more_o even_o as_o water_n harden_v iron_n when_o it_o be_v hot_a but_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n work_v other_o effect_n therefore_o the_o apostle_n say_v i_o be_v glad_a that_o you_o be_v sorrowful_a because_o it_o wrought_v repentance_n in_o you_o that_o be_v it_o change_v your_o heart_n so_o much_o for_o this_o question_n the_o four_o question_n be_v this_o whether_o there_o be_v any_o difference_n between_o the_o godly_a sorrow_n and_o quest._n that_o which_o be_v false_a to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o they_o differ_v in_o three_o thing_n especial_o 1._o in_o the_o object_n  _fw-fr 2._o in_o the_o cause_n answ._n  _fw-fr 3_o in_o the_o effect_n the_o first_o difference_n be_v in_o the_o object_n the_o object_n of_o worldly_a sorrow_n be_v the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n 1._o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n he_o look_v upon_o these_o without_o any_o relation_n to_o christ_n but_o the_o object_n of_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v sin_n as_o it_o stand_v in_o opposition_n with_o the_o love_n of_o god_n towards_o he_o in_o christ_n and_o howsoever_o a_o regenerate_a man_n look_v upon_o the_o punishment_n yet_o in_o a_o different_a degree_n not_o so_o much_o because_o he_o fear_v punishment_n as_o that_o he_o shall_v give_v his_o father_n such_o cause_n to_o take_v such_o displeasure_n against_o he_o but_o it_o be_v sin_n that_o he_o principal_o look_v upon_o viz._n that_o he_o have_v displease_v so_o good_a so_o gracious_a a_o father_n as_o god_n have_v be_v unto_o he_o and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o work_v humiliation_n in_o he_o but_o the_o other_o see_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o hell_n death_n and_o that_o final_a separation_n between_o he_o and_o happiness_n and_o hereupon_o for_o fear_v of_o punishment_n he_o be_v humble_v thus_o you_o see_v the_o difference_n in_o the_o object_n the_o second_o difference_n be_v in_o the_o cause_n the_o cause_n of_o the_o worldly_a sorrow_n be_v either_o some_o judgement_n 2._o present_a either_o upon_o his_o person_n or_o in_o his_o substance_n or_o in_o his_o family_n or_o else_o it_o be_v some_o judgement_n that_o he_o fear_v god_n will_v inflict_v upon_o he_o hereafter_o either_o in_o his_o riches_n or_o in_o his_o credit_n and_o reputation_n among_o man_n and_o therefore_o for_o fear_v of_o these_o he_o be_v humble_v but_o the_o cause_n of_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v the_o apprehension_n of_o sin_n as_o it_o be_v contrary_a unto_o the_o nature_n purity_n and_o perfection_n of_o god_n as_o also_o of_o god_n love_n towards_o a_o man_n he_o have_v a_o eye_n give_v he_o whereby_o he_o see_v into_o the_o riches_n of_o god_n love_n unto_o he_o and_o then_o reflect_v upon_o himself_o and_o see_v his_o carriage_n towards_o god_n for_o such_o mercy_n and_o find_v no_o proportion_n between_o they_o hence_o grow_v his_o sorrow_n that_o he_o shall_v thus_o requite_v god_n with_o sin_n for_o mercy_n the_o three_o difference_n be_v in_o the_o effect_n for_o as_o they_o 3._o do_v proceed_v not_o from_o one_o and_o the_o same_o ground_n so_o they_o bring_v not_o forth_o the_o same_o but_o contrary_a effect_n and_o they_o be_v three_o fold_n first_o worldly_a sorrow_n it_o draw_v the_o affection_n of_o the_o heart_n from_o god_n because_o they_o see_v he_o as_o a_o judge_n they_o can_v love_v he_o as_o a_o father_n he_o take_v god_n to_o be_v his_o enemy_n and_o therefore_o do_v what_o he_o can_v to_o fly_v from_o he_o because_o he_o expect_v no_o good_a from_o he_o this_o we_o see_v as_o before_o in_o adam_n cain_n and_o judas_n but_o the_o godly_a sorrow_n it_o make_v a_o man_n cleave_v fast_o unto_o christ_n to_o stick_v fast_o unto_o grace_n it_o whet_v the_o affection_n to_o love_n christ_n to_o prize_n christ_n more_o it_o work_v a_o willing_a readiness_n in_o the_o soul_n to_o obey_v it_o put_v by_o that_o which_o will_v make_v he_o fly_v from_o christ_n second_o worldly_a sorrow_n it_o hurt_v the_o body_n it_o breed_v disease_n it_o waste_v and_o consume_v the_o entrail_n breed_v and_o bring_v consumption_n of_o the_o body_n it_o dull_v and_o make_v dead_a the_o soul_n it_o take_v away_o the_o relish_n of_o spiritual_a thing_n it_o make_v a_o man_n careless_a to_o good_a it_o daule_v and_o make_v a_o man_n unwilling_a unto_o any_o good_a but_o the_o godly_a sorrow_n it_o be_v the_o life_n of_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v the_o health_n of_o the_o body_n it_o quicken_v the_o soul_n of_o man_n unto_o good_a it_o put_v a_o new_a life_n into_o it_o it_o work_v a_o readiness_n in_o the_o will_n and_o love_n in_o the_o affection_n to_o christ_n grace_n and_o holiness_n three_o worldly_a sorrow_n it_o make_v a_o man_n of_o a_o hot_a and_o a_o fiery_a spirit_n it_o stir_v he_o up_o after_o evil_a to_o reproach_n and_o disgrace_v his_o neighbour_n it_o fill_v he_o full_a of_o hatred_n revenge_n and_o envy_v but_o godly_a sorrow_n it_o breed_v another_o kind_n of_o spirit_n in_o he_o it_o make_v he_o of_o a_o meek_a and_o a_o quiet_a spirit_n worldly_a sorrow_n will_v not_o put_v up_o reproach_n disgrace_n and_o wrong_v but_o this_o will_v put_v up_o all_o injury_n and_o wrong_n and_o whatsoever_o else_o he_o meet_v withal_o for_o christ_n thus_o you_o see_v the_o difference_n between_o these_o the_o five_o question_n be_v this_o how_o shall_v i_o know_v quest._n whether_o my_o sorrow_n be_v a_o godly_a sorrow_n or_o no._n to_o this_o i_o answer_v you_o shall_v know_v it_o by_o these_o three_o thing_n 1._o by_o the_o ingredient_n answ._n  _fw-fr 2._o by_o the_o continuance_n  _fw-fr 3_o by_o the_o event_n first_o i_o say_v you_o shall_v know_v it_o by_o the_o ingredient_n for_o first_o they_o have_v not_o only_o the_o sense_n of_o 1._o punishment_n which_o be_v common_a unto_o the_o worldly_a sorrow_n for_o i_o say_v howsoever_o it_o be_v the_o property_n of_o worldly_a sorrow_n to_o apprehend_v punishment_n yet_o it_o be_v likewise_o require_v of_o godly_a sorrow_n to_o be_v sensible_a of_o punishment_n but_o there_o be_v another_o light_n put_v into_o he_o whereby_o he_o see_v into_o the_o uncleanness_n of_o sin_n he_o see_v sin_n in_o its_o own_o dye_n not_o only_a sin_n to_o be_v sin_n but_o sin_n to_o be_v vile_a and_o hereupon_o he_o will_v not_o content_v himself_o with_o mercy_n unless_o he_o may_v have_v grace_n but_o the_o other_o care_v not_o if_o he_o may_v be_v free_a from_o punishment_n whether_o he_o have_v strength_n against_o corruption_n or_o no._n second_o you_o shall_v know_v it_o by_o the_o continuance_n 2._o of_o it_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v constant_a but_o worldly_a sorrow_n be_v but_o a_o passion_n of_o the_o mind_n it_o change_v it_o last_v not_o though_o for_o the_o present_a it_o may_v be_v violent_a and_o strong_a and_o work_n much_o outward_o yet_o it_o come_v but_o by_o fit_n and_o continue_v not_o like_o a_o land_n flood_n which_o violent_o for_o the_o present_a overflows_a the_o bank_n but_o it_o will_v away_o again_o it_o be_v not_o always_o thus_o but_o the_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v like_o a_o spring_n that_o still_o keep_v his_o run_n it_o be_v not_o dry_v up_o but_o run_v still_o it_o be_v not_o so_o violent_a as_o the_o other_o but_o it_o be_v more_o sure_a you_o shall_v have_v it_o still_o run_v both_o winter_n and_o summer_n wet_a and_o dry_a in_o hot_a and_o cold_a early_o and_o late_o so_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n be_v the_o same_o in_o a_o regenerate_a man_n still_o take_v he_o when_o you_o will_v he_o be_v still_o sorrow_v for_o sin_n this_o godly_a sorrow_n it_o stand_v like_o the_o centre_n of_o the_o earth_n which_o remove_v not_o but_o still_o remain_v three_o you_o shall_v know_v it_o by_o the_o success_n and_o 3._o event_n of_o it_o it_o will_v turn_v the_o heart_n unto_o christ_n it_o will_v make_v the_o heart_n stand_v more_o firm_a in_o grace_n it_o will_v turn_v the_o whole_a frame_n of_o the_o soul_n unto_o god_n like_o the_o loadstone_n that_o will_v not_o rest_v till_o it_o have_v touch_v the_o iron_n or_o as_o the_o needle_n touch_v will_v not_o stand_v till_o it_o touch_v the_o north-pole_n so_o it_o be_v with_o this_o godly_a sorrow_n when_o a_o man_n have_v receive_v but_o a_o touch_n of_o the_o spirit_n he_o will_v never_o rest_v till_o he_o have_v touch_v christ_n till_o he_o be_v at_o peace_n with_o he_o nothing_o will_v satisfy_v he_o till_o christ_n come_v into_o the_o soul_n till_o christ_n be_v his_o nothing_o will_v make_v he_o to_o remove_v that_o confidence_n and_o trust_v that_o he_o have_v in_o christ_n all_o thing_n shall_v go_v for_o christ._n but_o the_o can_v there_o be_v than_o this_o to_o keep_v both_o god_n and_o his_o grace_n from_o we_o second_o it_o deprive_v we_o of_o the_o chief_a good_a within_o we_o as_o for_o example_n first_o it_o deform_v the_o beauty_n and_o strength_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n second_o it_o weaken_v that_o grace_n that_o be_v within_o that_o be_v it_o make_v we_o unable_a to_o resist_v evil_a this_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o sin_n three_o if_o you_o can_v see_v it_o in_o these_o then_o come_v unto_o the_o effect_n that_o it_o work_v and_o it_o will_v appear_v 3._o to_o be_v the_o great_a evil_n first_o it_o turn_v all_o the_o faculty_n and_o part_n of_o the_o soul_n &_o body_n to_o evil_a and_o be_v the_o breeder_n of_o all_o distemperature_n as_o fear_v and_o horror_n in_o the_o soul_n second_o it_o bring_v all_o the_o evil_a that_o do_v befall_v a_o man_n in_o this_o life_n they_o all_o come_v by_o sin_n all_o shame_n reproach_n poverty_n disgrace_n punishment_n come_v by_o sin_n now_o if_o bankrupt_a so_o it_o be_v with_o sin_n what_o though_o the_o sin_n be_v but_o a_o little_a sin_n yet_o give_v this_o a_o little_a vent_n put_v it_o to_o action_n and_o this_o sin_n will_v prove_v a_o great_a sin_n give_v once_o consent_n and_o in_o time_n it_o will_v be_v a_o reign_a sin_n and_o when_o it_o be_v thus_o than_o it_o turn_v the_o soul_n into_o evil_n set_v it_o on_o a_o rage_n be_v humble_a and_o that_o you_o may_v do_v this_o you_o must_v do_v these_o thing_n first_o you_o must_v labour_v to_o get_v some_o sense_n of_o holiness_n that_o be_v you_o must_v get_v the_o heart_n in_o a_o frame_n of_o grace_n for_o except_v a_o man_n get_v the_o spirit_n he_o will_v not_o be_v humble_v but_o when_o there_o be_v holiness_n breed_v in_o the_o heart_n than_o he_o will_v see_v sin_n to_o be_v humble_a he_o will_v see_v sin_n out_o of_o his_o place_n take_v any_o heavy_a thing_n especial_o water_n and_o in_o its_o place_n it_o be_v not_o heavy_a but_o let_v it_o be_v remove_v out_o of_o its_o place_n and_o it_o will_v be_v a_o heavy_a burden_n even_o so_o will_v sin_n be_v unto_o you_o when_o you_o have_v once_o get_v the_o spirit_n you_o will_v then_o see_v sin_n out_o of_o his_o place_n and_o to_o be_v a_o heavy_a burden_n that_o you_o will_v not_o willing_o bear_v it_o but_o you_o will_v stoop_v under_o it_o and_o therefore_o the_o more_o holiness_n that_o any_o man_n get_v the_o more_o will_v be_v his_o sight_n of_o sin_n and_o where_o there_o be_v most_o sight_n of_o sin_n there_o will_v be_v most_o grief_n for_o sin_n and_o this_o grief_n be_v where_o there_o be_v most_o sense_n of_o sin_n there_o the_o heart_n be_v best_a fit_v for_o grace_n and_o in_o this_o case_n the_o more_o tender_a of_o conscience_n the_o better_a christian._n second_o if_o you_o will_v be_v fit_a to_o be_v humble_a 2._o consider_v another_o thing_n which_o be_v the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n if_o you_o continue_v in_o sin_n you_o shall_v be_v damn_v deprive_v of_o glory_n you_o be_v once_o good_a consider_v now_o wherein_o your_o happiness_n consist_v consider_v that_o you_o have_v a_o immortal_a soul_n and_o that_o you_o must_v be_v call_v to_o he_o and_o nourish_v he_o up_o in_o grace_n a_o man_n that_o be_v not_o humble_a be_v like_o a_o sieve_n that_o lose_v through_o it_o all_o that_o be_v good_a but_o keep_v nothing_o but_o mote_n and_o dirt_n when_o he_o come_v unto_o the_o word_n if_o there_o be_v any_o thing_n that_o may_v fit_v his_o humour_n that_o he_o will_v hold_v which_o be_v nothing_o but_o vanity_n and_o nourish_v not_o but_o for_o that_o which_o be_v able_a to_o feed_v the_o soul_n and_o make_v he_o wise_a in_o all_o spiritual_a wisdom_n which_o be_v the_o application_n both_o of_o the_o threaten_n and_o the_o promise_n unto_o the_o soul_n this_o he_o let_v go_v as_o not_o worth_a the_o keep_n and_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o man_n remain_v so_o barren_a and_o fruitless_a because_o they_o do_v not_o retain_v that_o or_o love_v that_o which_o will_v make_v they_o fruitful_a in_o holiness_n these_o man_n be_v like_o child_n that_o cry_v for_o book_n not_o because_o they_o have_v a_o desire_n to_o learn_v but_o because_o they_o may_v turn_v over_o some_o gaudy_a or_o gild_a letter_n so_o these_o man_n they_o come_v to_o church_n and_o they_o hear_v and_o they_o receive_v the_o sacrament_n and_o they_o read_v the_o word_n but_o not_o to_o learn_v to_o be_v edify_v by_o they_o but_o to_o play_v with_o some_o golden_a letter_n to_o hear_v the_o folly_n and_o foolishness_n of_o he_o that_o preach_v himself_o and_o not_o christ_n or_o for_o fashion_n sake_n or_o for_o some_o other_o by-respect_n but_o not_o to_o this_o end_n that_o they_o may_v be_v build_v up_o in_o grace_n the_o second_o part_n of_o the_o word_n be_v the_o medicine_n part_n the_o heal_a part_n for_o as_o there_o be_v power_n in_o the_o 2._o word_n to_o fill_v the_o soul_n full_a of_o grace_n so_o there_o be_v another_o power_n in_o the_o word_n to_o heal_v the_o breach_n and_o wound_n in_o the_o soul_n now_o he_o that_o will_v find_v this_o save_a power_n in_o the_o word_n he_o must_v be_v humble_a he_o must_v find_v and_o feel_v himself_o sick_a of_o sin_n unto_o death_n than_o the_o word_n have_v this_o power_n to_o save_v and_o to_o heal_v but_o if_o a_o man_n do_v not_o find_v himself_o spiritual_o sick_a the_o word_n will_v never_o heal_v he_o but_o it_o will_v be_v a_o quite_o contrary_a medicine_n rather_o a_o destroy_a medicine_n then_o a_o heal_a medicine_n it_o will_v be_v a_o false_a gloss_n upon_o your_o do_v you_o be_v weak_a in_o judgement_n as_o for_o example_n in_o study_v the_o law_n the_o thing_n in_o itself_o be_v good_a but_o if_o by_o study_v of_o it_o you_o seek_v to_o excuse_v you_o from_o strengthen_v of_o the_o inward_a man_n that_o you_o have_v no_o time_n and_o leisure_n you_o be_v weak_a in_o judgement_n because_o you_o be_v easy_a to_o be_v must_v remove_v the_o mean_n excuse_n and_o those_o hindrance_n which_o hinder_v the_o grow_v of_o the_o inward_a man_n and_o these_o be_v especial_o two_o the_o first_o hindrance_n be_v this_o when_o you_o spend_v your_o strength_n upon_o other_o thing_n and_o not_o in_o the_o hindrance_n strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n this_o make_v you_o not_o to_o grow_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n therefore_o you_o must_v be_v wise_a to_o take_v away_o from_o these_o thing_n and_o spend_v more_o time_n and_o take_v more_o pain_n in_o strengthen_v of_o the_o inward_a man_n for_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o you_o grow_v not_o all_o your_o time_n and_o affection_n be_v after_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o world_n and_o how_o you_o may_v grow_v strong_a in_o that_o that_o you_o can_v mind_v heavenly_a thing_n again_o you_o hinder_v the_o growth_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n when_o you_o set_v your_o affection_n upon_o base_a and_o vile_a thing_n this_o hinder_v the_o growth_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n this_o man_n be_v a_o weak_a man_n in_o grace_n as_o for_o example_n a_o man_n that_o have_v money_n to_o bestow_v at_o market_n if_o when_o he_o shall_v come_v there_o he_o shall_v bestow_v it_o on_o babble_n and_o not_o on_o the_o thing_n that_o he_o go_v to_o buy_v this_o man_n be_v a_o foolish_a man_n especial_o he_o know_v that_o he_o shall_v be_v call_v to_o a_o account_n for_o it_o how_o he_o have_v lay_v it_o out_o even_o thus_o and_o much_o more_o foolish_a be_v man_n when_o they_o spend_v their_o time_n on_o their_o pleasure_n and_o lust_n which_o be_v base_a thing_n and_o not_o on_o strengthen_v of_o the_o inward_a man_n they_o befool_v themselves_o and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o the_o wise_a man_n say_v that_o there_o be_v a_o price_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o fool_n but_o he_o have_v no_o heart_n when_o man_n neglect_v the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n they_o forsake_v a_o great_a price_n that_o will_v enrich_v they_o but_o because_o they_o want_v knowledge_n because_o they_o be_v weak_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o judge_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n of_o spiritual_a thing_n therefore_o never_o brag_v of_o your_o strength_n except_o it_o be_v the_o strength_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n and_o take_v heed_n of_o neglect_v the_o time_n paul_n will_v have_v the_o gather_n for_o the_o poor_a to_o be_v before_o he_o come_v that_o that_o may_v not_o hinder_v he_o from_o strengthen_v of_o the_o inward_a man_n though_o that_o be_v a_o holy_a work_n it_o be_v a_o good_a speech_n of_o one_o who_o after_o that_o he_o have_v spend_v much_o time_n in_o write_v about_o controversy_n at_o last_o conclude_v i_o have_v say_v he_o spend_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o time_n but_o not_o in_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n the_o devil_n have_v beguile_v i_o but_o he_o shall_v go_v beyond_o i_o no_o more_o that_o time_n that_o i_o have_v i_o will_v spend_v unto_o another_o end_n it_o be_v wisdom_n in_o you_o to_o do_v the_o like_a you_o that_o have_v spend_v and_o do_v spend_v your_o time_n about_o trifle_n and_o babble_n upon_o your_o lust_n conclude_v that_o now_o for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v you_o will_v gather_v your_o strength_n and_o bend_v all_o your_o labour_n and_o pain_n to_o this_o end_n for_o the_o strengthen_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n and_o say_v in_o yourselves_o we_o have_v a_o price_n in_o our_o hand_n that_o be_v we_o have_v much_o time_n whereby_o we_o may_v have_v strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n but_o we_o have_v no_o heart_n that_o be_v we_o be_v befool_v because_o we_o do_v not_o know_v the_o excellency_n of_o the_o inward_a man_n but_o we_o will_v do_v so_o no_o more_o the_o time_n now_o that_o we_o have_v shall_v be_v spend_v in_o this_o how_o we_o may_v be_v strengthen_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n and_o grow_v in_o favour_n with_o god_n the_o second_o hindrance_n that_o must_v be_v remove_v which_o be_v contrary_a unto_o the_o growth_n of_o the_o inward_a hindrance_n man_n be_v strong_a lust_n unmortified_a affection_n there_o be_v inward_a hindrance_n which_o must_v be_v remove_v before_o the_o soul_n can_v grow_v strong_a in_o grace_n these_o venom_n the_o soul_n and_o keep_v off_o the_o stroke_n of_o the_o word_n it_o keep_v the_o plaster_n from_o the_o sore_a as_o for_o example_n if_o a_o man_n be_v wound_v by_o a_o arrow_n so_o long_o as_o the_o arrow_n head_n be_v in_o the_o wound_n no_o plaster_n will_v heal_v it_o now_o as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o outward_a man_n so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o inward_a man_n if_o you_o retain_v any_o lust_n any_o belove_a sin_n and_o so_o come_v unto_o the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n you_o will_v come_v without_o profit_n because_o the_o arrow_n head_n be_v in_o the_o wound_n your_o lust_n you_o keep_v unmortified_a and_o so_o long_o you_o can_v be_v heal_v this_o keep_v the_o plaster_n off_o the_o sore_a you_o know_v what_o pain_n the_o humour_n of_o the_o body_n will_v breed_v in_o a_o man_n when_o they_o gather_v into_o any_o part_n of_o the_o body_n and_o how_o they_o
will_v hinder_v the_o augmentation_n in_o other_o part_n so_o when_o these_o evil_a humour_n of_o the_o soul_n gather_v together_o and_o begin_v to_o reign_v and_o bear_v rule_n in_o the_o soul_n it_o be_v unpossible_a that_o the_o soul_n shall_v grow_v in_o holiness_n till_o they_o be_v purge_v away_o therefore_o be_v earnest_a with_o god_n to_o purge_v out_o these_o humour_n whether_o they_o be_v profit_n or_o pleasure_n or_o honour_n or_o any_o other_o thing_n and_o in_o thus_o do_v you_o shall_v strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n and_o the_o strong_a that_o the_o inward_a man_n be_v the_o healthful_a the_o soul_n be_v i_o say_v it_o be_v unpossible_a that_o you_o shall_v thrive_v in_o the_o inward_a man_n so_o long_o as_o you_o retain_v any_o sin_n and_o therefore_o our_o saviour_n say_v how_o can_v you_o believe_v see_v you_o seek_v honour_v one_o of_o another_o if_o you_o retain_v the_o love_n of_o credit_n and_o reputation_n in_o the_o world_n before_o grace_n how_o can_v you_o believe_v you_o can_v be_v strong_a in_o the_o inward_a man_n the_o five_o mean_n to_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n be_v this_o you_o must_v get_v spiritual_a courage_n and_o joy_n mean_n little_a courage_n again_o i_o say_v unto_o those_o that_o be_v travail_v towards_o heaven_n take_v heed_n of_o give_v discouragement_n unto_o any_o for_o this_o be_v the_o property_n of_o the_o devil_n to_o discourage_v man_n and_o therefore_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o he_o make_v man_n doubt_v of_o their_o salvation_n to_o fear_v their_o call_n to_o question_v god_n love_n towards_o to_o pray_v or_o hear_v the_o word_n or_o the_o like_a yet_o know_v that_o it_o be_v god_n that_o fit_v the_o heart_n he_o can_v of_o unfit_a make_v it_o fit_a and_o of_o unwilling_a make_v it_o when_o they_o be_v cast_v reproachful_a speech_n against_o those_o that_o labour_n to_o strengthen_v the_o inward_a man_n but_o this_o discover_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o corruption_n in_o they_o and_o
