subsistence_n and_o well-being_n in_o soul_n and_o body_n in_o the_o second_o petition_n we_o pray_v for_o the_o pardon_n of_o our_o debt_n and_o trespass_n in_o the_o three_o and_o last_o for_o deliverance_n from_o temptation_n and_o from_o those_o evil_n which_o they_o may_v else_o bring_v upon_o we_o in_o the_o few_o word_n whereof_o the_o first_o of_o these_o petition_n consist_v many_o suffering_n oppression_n or_o affliction_n whatsoever_o which_o he_o can_v take_v notice_n of_o in_o his_o residency_n or_o any_o oppressor_n so_o powerful_a or_o high_o exalt_v that_o he_o can_v nevertheless_o come_v far_o short_a of_o express_v it_o to_o our_o understanding_n who_o be_v so_o ignorant_a of_o our_o own_o being_n that_o most_o be_v doubtful_a whether_o the_o soul_n be_v in_o the_o body_n or_o the_o body_n in_o the_o soul_n in_o my_o private_a judgement_n i_o think_v the_o soul_n contain_v the_o body_n and_o be_v partly_o thereto_o induce_v by_o this_o accidental_a experience_n a_o gentlewoman_n of_o my_o acquaintance_n have_v her_o leg_n cut_v off_o close_o below_o the_o knee_n who_o many_o year_n after_o that_o leg_n be_v bury_v seem_v to_o be_v so_o sensible_a of_o motion_n in_o her_o foot_n and_o toe_n and_o of_o itching_n in_o the_o leg_n and_o foot_n that_o sometime_o before_o she_o be_v aware_a what_o she_o do_v she_o will_v sudden_o reach_v down_o her_o hand_n to_o scratch_v the_o place_n as_o if_o her_o leg_n have_v still_o be_v there_o and_o then_o laugh_v at_o her_o mistake_n from_o whence_o i_o collect_v that_o her_o soul_n still_o extend_v a_o animate_v faculty_n to_o the_o whole_a dimension_n of_o her_o body_n when_o a_o part_n thereof_o have_v be_v long_o cut_v off_o be_v rather_o the_o container_n of_o the_o body_n then_o contain_v therein_o because_o though_o that_o part_n have_v no_o be_v wherein_o that_o operation_n may_v be_v actual_o exercise_v as_o in_o a_o part_n of_o the_o body_n the_o soul_n be_v as_o entire_a as_o before_o this_o digression_n i_o leave_v to_o be_v consider_v by_o other_o as_o their_o judgement_n shall_v incline_v they_o and_o perhaps_o it_o may_v be_v of_o some_o use_n 8._o indeed_o our_o almighty_a father_n residence_n in_o heaven_n and_o his_o universal_a presence_n be_v unexpressable_a therefore_o we_o must_v like_v wean_v child_n in_o this_o and_o in_o all_o other_o such_o like_a mystery_n meek_o submit_v to_o such_o illustration_n as_o god_n have_v vouchsafe_v and_o make_v we_o capable_a of_o without_o admit_v impertinent_a curiosity_n content_v ourselves_o with_o those_o dispensation_n which_o will_v then_o be_v render_v sufficient_a for_o we_o and_o make_v that_o acceptable_a to_o he_o which_o we_o shall_v believe_v and_o do_v upon_o that_o account_n and_o if_o we_o their_o own_o conscience_n by_o compel_v or_o allure_a they_o to_o disobey_v god_n rather_o than_o man_n which_o mischief_n can_v be_v avoid_v by_o those_o who_o be_v not_o at_o all_o time_n careful_a to_o examine_v and_o try_v all_o spirit_n by_o the_o true_a standard_n not_o only_o their_o own_o light_n and_o the_o light_n which_o be_v set_v up_o by_o humane_a authority_n but_o those_o revelation_n also_o that_o seem_v to_o be_v angelical_o inspire_v what_o infallibility_n soever_o shall_v be_v to_o they_o ascribe_v for_o the_o devil_n can_v transform_v himself_o into_o a_o angel_n of_o light_n and_o these_o late_a time_n be_v so_o full_a of_o delusion_n and_o imposture_n that_o none_o shall_v escape_v they_o but_o they_o who_o unfeigned_o and_o diligent_o endeavour_v thus_o to_o do_v therewith_o implore_v god_n promise_v assistance_n and_o trust_v thereupon_o to_o these_o be_v due_a the_o promise_n both_o of_o this_o life_n and_o of_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v can_v be_v yet_o bear_v and_o i_o fear_v i_o have_v already_o or_o may_v in_o what_o follow_v express_v so_o much_o more_o than_o some_o will_v be_v please_v withal_o that_o i_o shall_v loose_v more_o friend_n than_o i_o gain_v by_o it_o but_o i_o will_v discharge_v my_o conscience_n and_o god_n will_v be_v do_v let_v other_o man_n do_v so_o without_o any_o sinister_a self-end_n and_o i_o shall_v take_v no_o offence_n thereat_o this_o be_v part_n of_o that_o which_o i_o express_v or_o implicit_o contemplate_v when_o i_o repeat_v the_o preface_n to_o the_o lord_n prayer_n now_o i_o proceed_v to_o the_o petition_n the_o first_o petition_n hallow_a be_v thy_o name_n 1._o this_o prayer_n consist_v of_o six_o petition_n the_o first_o three_o do_v principal_o relate_v to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n not_o that_o he_o need_v our_o prayer_n for_o the_o advancement_n thereof_o for_o he_o be_v eternal_o and_o all-sufficient_o glorify_v in_o and_o by_o himself_o these_o petition_n have_v the_o first_o place_n in_o our_o devotion_n for_o our_o avail_v and_o for_o the_o better_a prepare_v way_n to_o obtain_v that_o which_o be_v pertinent_a to_o ourselves_o and_o which_o can_v in_o equity_n be_v grant_v until_o we_o be_v in_o some_o degree_n qualify_v by_o conform_v our_o will_n and_o affection_n 〈◊〉_d the_o mind_n of_o god_n lest_o the_o grant_n of_o our_o natural_a desire_n in_o temporary_a thing_n before_o they_o be_v sanctify_v by_o the_o obtain_n of_o some_o spiritual_a gift_n to_o the_o abate_n of_o that_o antipathy_n which_o be_v in_o we_o to_o the_o purity_n of_o god_n divine_a nature_n may_v total_o obstruct_v the_o obtain_n what_o we_o pray_v for_o and_o be_v more_o mischievous_a than_o the_o denial_n thereof_o as_o questionless_a all_o temporal_a blessing_n will_v be_v if_o confer_v upon_o we_o before_o we_o shall_v somewhat_o sympathize_v with_o our_o heavenly_a father_n and_o show_v it_o forth_o by_o affect_v and_o seek_v the_o accomplish_n of_o that_o which_o he_o will_v and_o work_v which_o medium_fw-la if_o well_o consider_v will_v appear_v to_o be_v both_o will_v and_o prosecute_v by_o he_o for_o our_o advantage_n in_o the_o composure_n of_o this_o prayer_n though_o the_o sanctify_a of_o his_o name_n the_o advent_n of_o his_o kingdom_n and_o the_o complete_n of_o his_o will_n seem_v in_o terminis_fw-la to_o be_v the_o whole_a scope_n of_o the_o first_o three_o petition_n for_o the_o glorify_v the_o name_n of_o our_o father_n will_v be_v a_o honour_n to_o we_o who_o be_v his_o child_n the_o come_n of_o his_o kingdom_n will_v bring_v we_o deliverance_n from_o those_o tyrant_n by_o who_o we_o be_v oppress_v and_o the_o fulfil_n of_o god_n will_v here_o on_o earth_n as_o it_o be_v in_o heaven_n will_v both_o free_v we_o from_o their_o imposture_n who_o impose_v upon_o we_o a_o obedience_n to_o their_o arbitrary_a will_n in_o the_o place_n of_o he_o and_o enlarge_v we_o from_o that_o slavish_a bondage_n of_o sin_n whereinto_o we_o be_v bring_v by_o seek_v the_o accomplishment_n of_o our_o own_o carnal_a will_n thus_o all_o thing_n be_v do_v according_a to_o god_n will_v heaven_n will_v begin_v to_o appear_v upon_o earth_n where_o man_n wickedness_n and_o wilfulness_n have_v begin_v to_o make_v hell_n this_o exceed_a love_n of_o god_n to_o mankind_n in_o require_v no_o performance_n at_o our_o hand_n for_o the_o glorify_v of_o himself_o but_o what_o may_v conduce_v to_o our_o happiness_n also_o shall_v move_v we_o by_o his_o exemplary_a love_n so_o unfeigned_o to_o love_v he_o and_o one_o another_o for_o his_o sake_n that_o it_o may_v be_v accept_v of_o as_o a_o fulfil_n of_o his_o whole_a law_n for_o the_o same_o philanthrophy_n which_o be_v evidence_v by_o his_o vouchsafe_v this_o for_o they_o shall_v be_v fill_v bless_a be_v the_o merciful_a for_o they_o shall_v obtain_v mercy_n bless_a be_v the_o pure_a in_o heart_n for_o they_o shall_v see_v god_n bless_a be_v the_o peacemaker_n for_o they_o shall_v be_v call_v the_o child_n of_o god_n bless_a be_v they_o who_o be_v persecute_v for_o righteousness_n sake_n for_o they_o be_v the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n bless_a easy_a to_o a_o regenerate_v heart_n when_o it_o know_v that_o god_n will_n and_o righteousness_n be_v one_o and_o that_o our_o will_n and_o wickedness_n also_o be_v one_o as_o it_o be_v mere_o our_o own_o will_n and_o bring_v we_o into_o all_o the_o mischief_n which_o befall_v both_o in_o this_o world_n and_o the_o world_n to_o come_v if_o we_o be_v sway_v whole_o thereby_o in_o this_o petition_n as_o in_o the_o former_a we_o ask_v together_o with_o what_o tend_v to_o god_n glory_n that_o which_o will_v both_o prevent_v our_o destruction_n here_o and_o procure_v our_o eternal_a happiness_n the_o same_o though_o to_o we_o it_o seem_v to_o change_v as_o we_o be_v change_v he_o have_v not_o as_o some_o say_v who_o delude_v themselves_o and_o other_o by_o sophisticated_a distinction_n a_o secret_a and_o a_o reveal_v will_n contradictory_n to_o each_o other_o yea_o so_o contradictory_n that_o they_o may_v be_v rather_o judge_v two_o will_n then_o one_o this_o false_a opinion_n cause_v many_o to_o be_v distrustful_a of_o god_n good_a meaning_n towards_o mankind_n fearful_a he_o will_v reprobate_v they_o when_o they_o have_v do_v all_o they_o can_v to_o please_v he_o and_o consequent_o though_o they_o profess_v the_o contrary_a and_o speak_v many_o good_a word_n of_o he_o blaspheam_n his_o goodness_n impute_v that_o unto_o he_o which_o belong_v to_o the_o devil_n and_o themselves_o only_o they_o who_o make_v unto_o themselves_o such_o a_o god_n can_v be_v better_a than_o he_o and_o i_o shall_v not_o wonder_v if_o they_o can_v pray_v hearty_o that_o his_o will_n may_v be_v do_v 2._o to_o excuse_v themselves_o there_o be_v some_o of_o these_o who_o in_o effect_n do_v irreverent_o say_v thus_o unto_o god_n in_o their_o heart_n who_o have_v resist_v thy_o will_n thou_o know_v that_o by_o the_o sin_n of_o our_o father_n and_o by_o thy_o eternal_a decree_n of_o election_n and_o reprobation_n the_o great_a part_n of_o mankind_n be_v leave_v in_o or_o rather_o that_o partly_o out_o of_o love_n to_o themselves_o and_o partly_o in_o thankfulness_n for_o that_o mercy_n they_o give_v he_o a_o portion_n of_o their_o love_n unto_o who_o all_o be_v due_a and_o who_o never_o leave_v they_o total_o to_o themselves_o who_o have_v once_o give_v up_o unto_o he_o their_o whole_a heart_n notwithstanding_o this_o reserve_v somewhat_o resemble_v that_o of_o ananias_n and_o saphira_n god_n not_o seem_v to_o heed_n it_o as_o he_o do_v their_o hypocrisy_n these_o feel_v such_o a_o sweetness_n in_o those_o beginning_n of_o a_o gracious_a influence_n that_o they_o not_o only_o endeavour_v to_o increase_v the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o truth_n but_o so_o also_o to_o mortify_v the_o lust_n of_o their_o flesh_n that_o they_o attain_v to_o a_o extraordinary_a outward_a holiness_n beyond_o many_o other_o professor_n of_o christianity_n yea_o to_o hazard_v also_o their_o liberty_n and_o estate_n in_o suffer_v for_o their_o conscience_n and_o for_o reprove_v injustice_n and_o impiety_n this_o get_v they_o so_o much_o love_n among_o all_o those_o good_a man_n to_o who_o they_o be_v know_v that_o they_o heap_v on_o they_o many_o benefit_n and_o kindness_n to_o the_o recompense_n of_o their_o
