the_o eminent_a propriety_n which_o it_o have_v in_o person_n who_o do_v thus_o sin_v general_o though_o not_o absolute_o and_o simple_o three_o sort_n of_o person_n run_v on_o in_o the_o frequent_a and_o manifold_a act_n of_o great_a sin_n viz._n such_o as_o be_v notorious_o profane_a such_o as_o be_v close_o hypocritical_a such_o as_o be_v despiteful_o oppose_v the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n these_o be_v they_o who_o grow_v from_o evil_a to_o worse_o and_o add_v sin_n to_o sin_n and_o make_v and_o fill_v up_o the_o measure_n of_o their_o particular_a iniquity_n which_o must_v needs_o stagger_v any_o soul_n though_o perhaps_o not_o yet_o run_v on_o so_o far_o as_o they_o if_o yet_o repeat_v step_n in_o the_o same_o path_n which_o the_o vile_a of_o sinner_n have_v tread_v in_o before_o it_o second_o in_o regard_n of_o that_o dark_a and_o rare_a exemplarity_n of_o such_o kind_n of_o sin_v by_o any_o in_o scripture_n canonize_v for_o saint_n or_o godly_a person_n it_o be_v easy_o admit_v that_o you_o may_v espy_v upon_o some_o of_o the_o best_a something_o of_o the_o worst_a and_o perhaps_o thick_o heap_v upon_o the_o same_o sudden_a passion_n and_o temptation_n but_o you_o shall_v rare_o find_v any_o one_o of_o they_o often_o at_o the_o same_o foul_a transgression_n i_o say_v you_o shall_v rare_o find_v it_o and_o believe_v i_o it_o will_v be_v a_o stagger_a case_n to_o any_o sin_v heart_n where_o its_o wage_n be_v such_o as_o to_o see_v multitude_n of_o the_o worst_a and_o scarce_o any_o one_o of_o good_a note_n so_o pace_v and_o walk_v nay_o three_o until_o the_o soul_n thus_o sin_v do_v bestow_v infinite_a labour_n grace_n be_v hardly_o discern_v in_o such_o a_o one_o without_o much_o labour_n labour_n strong_a care_n continue_a humbling_n incessant_a cry_n to_o raise_v itself_o again_o in_o respect_n of_o any_o other_o evidence_n it_o shall_v hardly_o or_o never_o distinguish_v the_o yet_o secret_o remain_v the_o miserable_o deface_a frame_n of_o goodness_n within_o it_o a_o soul_n in_o this_o temper_n be_v not_o so_o much_o to_o dispute_v and_o question_n as_o to_o rise_v and_o work_v the_o case_n of_o frequent_v or_o renew_v the_o same_o sinful_a act_n will_v never_o be_v answer_v in_o thy_o conscience_n but_o by_o full_a humbling_n sound_a judge_n speedy_a repenting_n careful_a watch_n and_o declining_n wonderful_a strengthning_n of_o the_o contrary_a grace_n and_o act_n diligent_a fear_n fervent_a communion_n with_o god_n and_o more_o upright_o walk_v yet_o fourthly_a though_o it_o be_v a_o rare_a case_n this_o double_n or_o renew_v case_n yet_o this_o though_o it_o be_v a_o rare_a be_v a_o possible_a case_n of_o some_o great_a sinful_a act_n very_o few_o good_a man_n do_v it_o and_o that_o too_o very_o seldom_o perhaps_o as_o job_n speak_v so_o they_o may_v do_v once_o have_v i_o speak_v yea_o twice_o but_o i_o will_v proceed_v no_o further_o job_n 40._o 5._o i_o say_v though_o it_o be_v rare_a yet_o it_o be_v a_o possible_a case_n that_o sin_n may_v have_v more_o than_o one_o particular_a victory_n where_o yet_o it_o have_v not_o dominion_n i_o speak_v not_o this_o to_o hearten_v any_o man_n to_o sin_n for_o this_o will_v argue_v sin_n indeed_o to_o have_v dominion_n but_o to_o recover_v a_o man_n that_o have_v sin_v who_o soul_n be_v extreme_o bruise_v with_o his_o second_o fall_n it_o must_v be_v something_o that_o must_v breed_v a_o strife_n direction_n look_v up_o to_o god_n and_o christ_n 3._o again_o it_o must_v be_v something_o which_o may_v gain_v the_o affection_n it_o must_v be_v able_a to_o win_v the_o heart_n to_o dispose_v of_o love_n and_o hatred_n for_o dominion_n be_v make_v or_o mar_v by_o one_o of_o they_o 4._o again_o it_o must_v be_v something_o which_o may_v breed_v a_o stiff_a and_o courageous_a resolution_n that_o the_o heart_n will_v not_o serve_v sin_n but_o will_v go_v free_a and_o hereupon_o against_o all_o inward_a and_o outward_a opposition_n break_v forth_o into_o the_o use_n of_o victorious_a mean_n now_o than_o the_o direction_n be_v these_o 1._o if_o ever_o thou_o will_v get_v down_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n thou_o must_v look_v up_o to_o god_n and_o christ_n they_o be_v able_a to_o disannul_v the_o covenant_n with_o sin_n and_o to_o subdue_v iniquity_n rom._n 8._o 2._o the_o law_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o precious_a joy_n what_o heavenly_a consolation_n what_o peace_n here_o what_o hope_n for_o hereafter_o well_o come_v of_o it_o what_o will_v though_o i_o have_v be_v sinful_a i_o will_v not_o still_o direction_n against_o the_o natural_a dominion_n of_o sin_n now_o i_o proceed_v to_o some_o help_n against_o actual_a dominion_n which_o be_v the_o particular_a prevalency_n of_o a_o sin_n into_o be_v usual_o in_o respect_n of_o some_o particular_a lust_n which_o work_v with_o more_o strength_n in_o the_o soul_n than_o any_o other_o lust_n though_o it_o be_v most_o true_a that_o in_o every_o man_n there_o be_v a_o universal_a root_n of_o sin_v yet_o you_o find_v it_o in_o experience_n that_o the_o multitude_n of_o sinful_a inclination_n and_o thought_n and_o temptation_n run_v ordinary_o in_o some_o peculiar_a way_n with_o most_o frequency_n and_o violence_n second_o actual_a dominion_n be_v ordinary_o by_o such_o a_o sin_n which_o have_v the_o advantage_n of_o a_o natural_a complexion_n and_o outward_a condition_n and_o occasion_n and_o affection_n upon_o these_o do_v sin_n set_v the_o temptation_n as_o a_o engineer_n do_v place_v his_o battery_n upon_o such_o a_o occasion_n in_o converse_v active_o or_o passive_o have_v infinite_a bait_n in_o they_o and_o when_o our_o affection_n may_v run_v in_o some_o lawful_a measure_n and_o manner_n there_o sin_n take_v occasion_n to_o tempt_v and_o prevail_v with_o ease_n if_o we_o look_v not_o to_o it_o he_o may_v quick_o be_v cast_v down_o by_o a_o sinful_a temptation_n who_o be_v already_o prepare_v thereunto_o fail_v you_o and_o then_o your_o heart_n will_v deceive_v you_o you_o will_v venture_v to_o foul_a iniquity_n have_v nothing_o now_o within_o you_o of_o a_o contrary_a virtue_n but_o above_o all_o be_v strive_v for_o grace_n which_o be_v contrary_a not_o only_o to_o the_o sinful_a act_n but_o to_o the_o sinful_a nature_n which_o be_v the_o fountain_n incline_v the_o soul_n unto_o they_o get_v his_o tongue_n a_o word_n and_o his_o foot_n a_o walk_n you_o know_v this_o that_o sin_n be_v set_v on_o fire_n by_o occasion_n and_o by_o many_o thing_n which_o lie_v direct_o under_o our_o power_n and_o it_o may_v be_v much_o stay_v by_o the_o do_n of_o many_o thing_n which_o we_o be_v able_a to_o do_v if_o a_o man_n will_v let_v his_o eye_n still_o roll_n upon_o vain_a object_n whereas_o if_o he_o will_v he_o may_v check_v their_o motion_n no_o marvel_n if_o his_o heart_n be_v still_o set_v on_o fire_n by_o lust_n and_o if_o he_o will_v associate_v himself_o with_o person_n provoke_v he_o to_o filthiness_n and_o drunkenness_n whereas_o if_o he_o will_v he_o may_v decline_v that_o society_n who_o can_v think_v it_o strange_a that_o such_o sin_n shall_v have_v actual_a dominion_n over_o he_o if_o thou_o will_v thou_o may_v read_v and_o hear_v and_o apply_v thyself_o to_o all_o the_o mean_n by_o which_o grace_n may_v be_v wrought_v and_o sin_n subdue_v and_o if_o thou_o do_v so_o
