force_n and_o violence_n that_o be_v put_v upon_o and_o offer_v to_o it_o by_o our_o bodily_a appetite_n that_o deprive_v it_o of_o its_o freedom_n and_o suffer_v it_o not_o to_o choose_v as_o it_o be_v natural_o incline_v or_o to_o perform_v its_o own_o office_n so_o that_o either_o our_o will_n do_v signify_v nothing_o to_o we_o or_o from_o that_o power_n of_o check_v the_o senfitive_a motion_n of_o our_o nature_n which_o it_o be_v endue_v with_o we_o must_v conclude_v that_o a_o faculty_n of_o this_o nature_n be_v never_o well_o employ_v but_o in_o keep_v our_o body_n under_o and_o put_v our_o fleshly_a appetite_n under_o the_o restraint_n of_o temperance_n soberness_n chastity_n and_o the_o like_a virtue_n it_o be_v power_n to_o control_v our_o appetite_n and_o govern_v the_o member_n of_o our_o body_n be_v of_o no_o use_n at_o all_o to_o we_o if_o it_o be_v not_o our_o duty_n to_o employ_v it_o in_o lay_v virtuous_a habit_n in_o our_o mind_n §_o 3._o but_o beside_o that_o if_o it_o want_v any_o thing_n that_o its_o nature_n be_v capable_a of_o enjoy_v consider_v the_o condition_n of_o plant_n who_o only_a end_n be_v to_o grow_v up_o to_o such_o a_o state_n of_o maturity_n wherein_o they_o display_v their_o beauty_n and_o yield_v the_o fruit_n they_o be_v design_v to_o give_v now_o no_o plant_n can_v do_v this_o unless_o it_o be_v plant_v in_o a_o proper_a soil_n and_o enjoy_v so_o much_o of_o the_o influence_n of_o the_o sun_n as_o be_v needful_a to_o draw_v forth_o its_o life_n and_o virtue_n but_o for_o want_v of_o sap_n and_o nourishment_n it_o will_v hanguish_v and_o decay_v so_o likewise_o the_o beast_n of_o the_o earth_n which_o be_v make_v for_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o sensible_a object_n will_v be_v make_v in_o vain_a if_o they_o have_v nothing_o to_o see_v and_o to_o entertain_v their_o other_o sense_n with_o the_o happiness_n of_o a_o beast_n be_v to_o have_v meat_n and_o drink_n enough_o and_o to_o live_v among_o such_o object_n as_o be_v grateful_a to_o his_o sense_n and_o without_o these_o his_o life_n will_v be_v miserable_a for_o as_o no_o creature_n can_v be_v miserable_a so_o long_o as_o it_o enjoy_v all_o the_o good_a that_o it_o be_v capable_a of_o and_o there_o be_v no_o faculty_n in_o its_o nature_n that_o do_v want_v the_o object_n that_o be_v proper_a for_o it_o so_o there_o can_v be_v no_o full_a satisfaction_n where_o there_o be_v a_o faculty_n and_o nothing_o to_o entertain_v it_o thus_o to_o have_v a_o eye_n and_o yet_o nothing_o to_o see_v or_o to_o be_v doom_v to_o perpetual_a darkness_n will_v be_v a_o torment_n so_o that_o happiness_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o that_o rest_n and_o acquiescence_n that_o arise_v from_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o suitable_a object_n and_o according_o the_o happiness_n of_o man_n do_v consist_v in_o such_o a_o satisfaction_n of_o all_o the_o power_n of_o our_o nature_n as_o spring_n from_o the_o true_a and_o natural_a use_n of_o they_o and_o the_o at_o ease_n than_o the_o hungry_a man_n be_v who_o want_v the_o bread_n his_o appetite_n crave_v every_o faculty_n have_v its_o appetite_n and_o so_o long_o as_o any_o one_o appetite_n do_v gnaw_v suitable_a to_o the_o nature_n of_o each_o faculty_n 1._o the_o satisfaction_n we_o aim_v at_o must_v be_v for_o our_o whole_a nature_n and_o therefore_o before_o we_o can_v arrive_v to_o the_o full_a and_o complete_a happiness_n that_o we_o be_v capable_a of_o we_o must_v understand_v ourselves_o and_o be_v acquaint_v with_o the_o utmost_a excellency_n that_o belong_v to_o we_o for_o all_o man_n after_o sensual_a delight_n and_o bodily_a gratification_n so_o that_o these_o man_n do_v feel_v the_o truth_n of_o this_o that_o so_o long_o as_o there_o be_v any_o faculty_n in_o we_o that_o be_v not_o satisfy_v we_o can_v be_v happy_a and_o it_o must_v be_v confess_v that_o if_o he_o be_v not_o mistake_v in_o himself_o and_o man_n be_v no_o more_o excellent_a a_o creature_n than_o his_o way_n of_o life_n represent_v he_o he_o be_v as_o wise_a for_o himself_o as_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o a_o man_n to_o be_v and_o do_v pursue_v all_o the_o happiness_n we_o be_v capable_a of_o but_o if_o we_o be_v something_o more_o than_o flesh_n and_o blood_n the_o satisfaction_n he_o aim_v at_o be_v not_o the_o complete_a happiness_n of_o a_o man_n because_o it_o leave_v the_o most_o considerable_a part_n of_o our_o nature_n unsatisfied_a so_o that_o while_o we_o only_o take_v care_n of_o our_o body_n and_o study_v how_o to_o please_v our_o sense_n and_o to_o still_o the_o crave_n of_o our_o appetite_n though_o this_o be_v satisfactory_a to_o we_o yet_o it_o be_v only_o the_o satisfaction_n that_o belong_v to_o a_o beast_n for_o can_v a_o beast_n speak_v it_o will_v tell_v we_o that_o its_o utmost_a happiness_n lie_v in_o the_o enjoy_n of_o every_o thing_n that_o the_o body_n crave_v and_o be_v this_o all_o the_o satisfaction_n that_o a_o creature_n that_o have_v a_o soul_n to_o provide_v for_o a_o divine_a mind_n to_o please_v have_v to_o look_v after_o no_o since_o our_o nature_n be_v so_o much_o more_o excellent_a than_o they_o the_o happiness_n we_o must_v aim_v at_o must_v be_v so_o too_o our_o provision_n must_v be_v for_o our_o soul_n as_o well_o as_o our_o body_n for_o our_o understanding_n as_o well_o as_o our_o sense_n and_o our_o conscience_n as_o well_o as_o our_o appetite_n we_o may_v have_v the_o pleasure_n and_o satisfaction_n that_o belong_v to_o a_o brute_n when_o we_o pamper_v our_o body_n and_o keep_v not_o from_o our_o eye_n any_o good_a that_o they_o desire_v but_o after_o all_o this_o our_o want_n will_v be_v great_a than_o our_o enjoyment_n and_o our_o misery_n more_o than_o our_o happiness_n for_o in_o this_o case_n we_o only_o take_v care_n of_o half_a our_o nature_n and_o which_o be_v worse_o of_o that_o which_o be_v least_o worth_a our_o look_v after_o 2._o the_o satisfaction_n we_o must_v aim_v at_o must_v arise_v from_o the_o true_a and_o natural_a use_n of_o all_o our_o faculty_n as_o it_o be_v impossible_a we_o shall_v be_v happy_a so_o long_o as_o we_o neglect_v any_o part_n of_o ourselves_o so_o it_o be_v likewise_o
unless_o we_o employ_v the_o several_a power_n of_o our_o nature_n a-right_a it_o be_v as_o much_o against_o nature_n to_o make_v use_n of_o a_o understand_a faculty_n in_o the_o service_n of_o our_o body_n only_o i_o mean_v in_o worldly_a or_o bodily_a solicitude_n what_o we_o shall_v eat_v and_o what_o we_o shall_v drink_v or_o how_o we_o shall_v drive_v on_o our_o worldly_a aim_n as_o if_o a_o man_n shall_v resolve_v to_o hear_v with_o his_o eye_n and_o hence_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o when_o man_n make_v no_o other_o use_n of_o this_o faculty_n than_o this_o come_v to_o after_o a_o life_n of_o many_o year_n spend_v in_o thoughtfulness_n and_o anxious_a solicitude_n for_o the_o thing_n that_o relate_v to_o their_o body_n only_o they_o be_v as_o far_o at_o last_o from_o be_v happy_a as_o they_o be_v at_o first_o it_o be_v with_o man_n in_o this_o case_n as_o it_o be_v with_o child_n who_o think_v if_o they_o be_v but_o at_o the_o top_n of_o such_o a_o hill_n as_o lie_v at_o a_o good_a distance_n from_o they_o they_o shall_v touch_v the_o sun_n and_o yet_o when_o they_o come_v there_o they_o be_v no_o near_o it_o than_o at_o first_o and_o thus_o it_o will_v be_v shall_v they_o go_v round_a the_o world_n thus_o man_n that_o use_v their_o understanding_n only_o in_o worldly_a or_o sensual_a project_n believe_v that_o in_o compass_v such_o a_o design_n or_o enjoy_v such_o a_o good_a they_o shall_v complete_a their_o happiness_n and_o yet_o when_o they_o have_v do_v it_o they_o be_v as_o far_o from_o be_v satisfy_v as_o they_o be_v before_o and_o this_o they_o continue_v to_o be_v when_o they_o have_v go_v the_o whole_a round_n of_o their_o life_n now_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o dissatisfaction_n do_v lie_v in_o this_o that_o they_o abuse_v their_o own_o mind_n and_o do_v not_o make_v a_o right_a use_n of_o their_o understanding_n for_o it_o be_v not_o the_o bare_a use_v our_o faculty_n will_v make_v we_o happy_a but_o the_o use_v they_o to_o their_o own_o true_a and_o proper_a ends._n and_o it_o must_v needs_o give_v great_a distaste_n and_o be_v very_o dissatisfactory_a factory_a to_o our_o mind_n to_o have_v its_o noble_a faculty_n employ_v in_o mean_a and_o sordid_a service_n and_o not_o be_v permit_v to_o discover_v its_o true_a and_o utmost_a usefulness_n to_o we_o to_o drudge_n for_o the_o body_n and_o not_o do_v its_o own_o proper_a work_n and_o consult_v its_o own_o good_a 3._o the_o satisfaction_n must_v arise_v from_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o that_o good_a as_o be_v suitalbe_n to_o the_o nature_n of_o each_o faculty_n so_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o the_o eye_n be_v from_o behold_v the_o light_n and_o the_o beauty_n of_o those_o object_n which_o the_o day_n discover_v and_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v dissatisfactory_a to_o this_o sense_n be_v darkness_n or_o the_o want_n of_o a_o object_n to_o behold_v or_o else_o such_o a_o imperfect_a light_n as_o be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o a_o clear_a perception_n but_o yet_o that_o which_o be_v grateful_a to_o the_o eye_n do_v give_v no_o satisfaction_n to_o the_o ear_n and_o the_o best_a melody_n in_o the_o world_n as_o much_o as_o it_o please_v the_o ear_n do_v not_o at_o all_o affect_v the_o eye_n so_o it_o be_v likewise_o with_o a_o respect_n to_o the_o high_a power_n of_o our_o soul_n they_o have_v some_o good_a that_o do_v peculiar_o belong_v to_o they_o from_o the_o enjoyhment_n of_o which_o alone_o do_v arise_v their_o satisfactgion_n and_o it_o be_v as_o preposterous_a a_o thing_n for_o a_o man_n to_o think_v himself_o happy_a without_o it_o as_o it_o be_v to_o gratify_v the_o eye_n without_o light_n man_n may_v boast_v of_o the_o mighty_a pleasure_n and_o wonderful_a satisfaction_n they_o meet_v with_o in_o a_o voluptuous_a senfual_a way_n of_o live_v but_o what_o pleasure_n can_v a_o soul_n take_v in_o the_o delight_n of_o a_o hog_n how_o be_v it_o possible_a that_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n shall_v be_v satisfy_v with_o the_o glory_n of_o the_o world_n which_o be_v the_o pleasure_n of_o the_o eye_n or_o with_o those_o grateful_a sound_n that_o be_v the_o delight_n of_o the_o ear_n or_o with_o those_o well-cooked_a dainty_n that_o gratify_v the_o palate_n the_o mind_n and_o soul_n of_o man_n be_v no_o more_o make_v for_o these_o thing_n than_o the_o eye_n be_v to_o rejoice_v in_o the_o melody_n of_o sound_n but_o if_o we_o will_v as_o well_o satisfy_v they_o as_o our_o bodily_a sense_n we_o must_v search_v for_o delight_n that_o be_v more_o accommmodate_v to_o their_o nature_n who_o can_v think_v that_o his_o understanding_n be_v give_v he_o for_o no_o other_o pleasure_n than_o that_o which_o his_o eye_n or_o his_o ear_n be_v sufficient_a to_o he_o for_o or_o that_o he_o have_v a_o soul_n which_o a_o beast_n want_v only_o to_o taste_v the_o pleasure_n of_o a_o beast_n bodily_a enjoyment_n be_v only_o proper_a to_o satisfy_v our_o bodily_a sense_n but_o the_o happiness_n of_o a_o man_n do_v suppose_v that_o our_o soul_n as_o well_o as_o our_o body_n be_v possess_v of_o that_o good_a that_o they_o can_v take_v pleasure_n in_o this_o then_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o that_o happiness_n we_o be_v to_o aim_v at_o i_o come_v 2._o to_o make_v it_o appear_v that_o without_o religion_n it_o be_v impossible_a our_o nature_n shall_v be_v perfect_o at_o ease_n and_o full_o something_o in_o we_o that_o all_o the_o bodily_a pleasure_n and_o enjoyment_n of_o this_o world_n can_v satisfy_v there_o will_v after_o all_o the_o care_n we_o can_v take_v to_o provide_v for_o our_o flesh_n be_v something_o in_o we_o that_o be_v dissatisfy_v and_o so_o long_o as_o there_o be_v any_o thing_n in_o we_o that_o be_v no_o satisfy_v we_o must_v be_v trouble_v with_o such_o gnawing_n as_o will_n not_o suffer_v we_o to_o be_v any_o more_o at_o ease_n than_o if_o we_o have_v eye_n and_o yet_o nothing_o to_o see_v but_o beside_o this_o we_o have_v the_o tacit_n confession_n tell_v their_o dissatisfaction_n for_o shall_v they_o but_o ask_v their_o own_o soul_n what_o pleasure_n they_o take_v in_o their_o riot_v and_o excess_n or_o what_o content_n their_o bodily_a enjoyment_n give_v they_o they_o will_v let_v they_o know_v that_o these_o be_v thing_n that_o grieve_v and_o vex_v that_o make_v they_o weak_a and_o languish_a and_o that_o expose_v they_o to_o death_n and_o misery_n they_o will_v complain_v of_o their_o hard_a fate_n of_o be_v compel_v to_o feed_v upon_o husk_n and_o trash_n and_o deprive_v of_o the_o pleasure_n of_o their_o own_o proper_a entertainment_n and_o therefore_o every_o wicked_a man_n be_v put_v upon_o hard_a shift_n to_o avoid_v all_o interview_n with_o his_o own_o mind_n lest_o he_o shall_v be_v chide_v and_o upbraid_v
