from_o heaven_n shall_v preach_v they_o shall_v be_v accurse_v 4._o go_v and_o inquire_v of_o all_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n of_o the_o most_o experience_a christian_n and_o ask_v they_o that_o have_v twenty_o thirty_o sixty_o year_n experience_n of_o the_o way_n of_o god_n and_o power_n of_o godliness_n and_o they_o will_v tell_v thou_o that_o though_o religion_n and_o keep_v of_o strict_a communion_n with_o god_n have_v more_o delight_n in_o it_o than_o the_o world_n can_v know_v and_o such_o that_o if_o they_o have_v ten_o thousand_o world_n they_o will_v give_v all_o to_o enjoy_v he_o who_o their_o soul_n love_v yet_o they_o will_v tell_v you_o also_o that_o it_o have_v cost_v they_o many_o a_o fervent_a prayer_n many_o a_o strong_a cry_n many_o a_o doubtful_a conflict_n many_o tear_n sigh_n and_o groan_n nay_o they_o will_v tell_v you_o that_o they_o have_v so_o strange_a and_o strong_a temptation_n still_o to_o grapple_v withal_o and_o that_o not_o any_o corruption_n be_v so_o full_o vanquish_v but_o that_o it_o sometime_o trouble_v still_o and_o that_o as_o long_o as_o they_o have_v a_o heart_n so_o full_a of_o corruption_n and_o live_v in_o a_o world_n so_o full_a of_o temptation_n and_o satan_n be_v so_o full_a of_o malice_n they_o do_v not_o nor_o can_v expect_v to_o put_v off_o their_o armour_n and_o think_v to_o sleep_v upon_o a_o bed_n of_o rose_n general_o it_o be_v people_n ignorance_n and_o want_v of_o experience_n that_o make_v they_o have_v such_o light_n and_o slight_a thought_n of_o the_o great_a business_n of_o religion_n indeed_o if_o they_o think_v it_o easy_a from_o their_o sense_n and_o conference_n in_o the_o power_n of_o god_n that_o be_v something_o man_n general_o in_o the_o matter_n of_o religion_n do_v as_o senssesnesse_n and_o ignorance_n of_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o work_n and_o labour_n of_o love_n and_o the_o number_n and_o impetuousness_n of_o their_o own_o corruption_n and_o satan_n temptation_n proceed_v their_o carnal_a confidence_n of_o their_o easiness_n to_o be_v save_v be_v it_o so_o then_o that_o the_o establish_a decree_n of_o god_n and_o the_o experience_n of_o all_o for_o the_o more_o we_o pray_v the_o easy_a and_o the_o better_a we_o pray_v than_o that_o god_n shall_v make_v it_o easy_o by_o abate_v our_o work_n for_o as_o in_o the_o other_o instance_n if_o god_n shall_v give_v we_o according_a to_o our_o desire_n in_o earthly_a thing_n there_o will_v be_v no_o end_n for_o that_o which_o we_o desire_v to_o day_n will_v as_o little_o satisfy_v we_o to_o that_o be_v set_v down_o in_o the_o scripture_n be_v so_o contrary_a to_o or_o at_o least_o above_o their_o reason_n that_o they_o can_v assent_v to_o they_o yet_o i_o be_o very_o confident_a that_o it_o be_v the_o practical_a truth_n of_o the_o scripture_n that_o they_o stop_v at_o which_o they_o be_v loath_a to_o obey_v they_o be_v fain_o to_o pretend_v or_o by_o the_o just_a judgement_n of_o that_o their_o very_a enemy_n can_v but_o approve_v of_o their_o life_n and_o this_o be_v it_o that_o make_v the_o christian_n both_o in_o respect_n of_o their_o charity_n and_o love_v one_o among_o another_o and_o to_o their_o enemy_n to_o be_v admire_v and_o commend_v even_o by_o their_o persecutor_n among_o who_o they_o live_v the_o very_a heathen_a can_v see_v a_o beauty_n in_o holiness_n therefore_o since_o the_o glorious_a light_n and_o lustre_n of_o the_o holiness_n of_o the_o command_n of_o god_n in_o scripture_n be_v so_o clear_a that_o man_n can_v but_o be_v convince_v and_o yet_o will_v not_o obey_v no_o marvel_n that_o those_o save_a truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o can_v be_v see_v by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n i_o say_v it_o be_v no_o marvel_n that_o god_n do_v not_o give_v they_o of_o that_o light_n which_o be_v supernatural_a since_o they_o resist_v and_o make_v no_o better_o use_v of_o their_o natural_a light_n live_v quite_o contrary_a to_o those_o thing_n that_o teach_v they_o and_o it_o be_v observe_v that_o one_o reason_n why_o god_n have_v not_o make_v all_o his_o truth_n so_o clear_a and_o demonstrative_a as_o mathematical_a natural_a truth_n be_v be_v that_o he_o will_v order_v matter_n so_o that_o those_o that_o be_v of_o corrupt_a mind_n may_v find_v some_o pretence_n for_o not_o believe_v of_o they_o for_o to_o such_o people_n god_n may_v just_o send_v strong_a delusion_n and_o it_o may_v be_v it_o be_v much_o better_o even_o for_o the_o people_n of_o god_n that_o all_o wicked_a man_n be_v not_o full_o convince_v of_o divine_a truth_n for_o that_o will_v make_v they_o much_o more_o outrageous_a and_o malicious_a for_o those_o who_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n convince_v but_o not_o convert_v they_o do_v enrage_v as_o they_o do_v satan_n who_o believe_v and_o as_o it_o do_v those_o who_o commit_v the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n who_o hate_v the_o truth_n they_o know_v be_v the_o great_a and_o most_o malicious_a persecutor_n nay_o and_o indeed_o it_o be_v a_o mercy_n in_o some_o kind_n even_o to_o the_o wicked_a also_o for_o it_o be_v better_a that_o they_o shall_v not_o know_v the_o truth_n of_o god_n since_o if_o they_o do_v know_v they_o they_o will_v not_o obey_v they_o therefore_o if_o thou_o will_v believe_v obey_v that_o be_v if_o thou_o will_v believe_v the_o mysterious_a truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n obey_v the_o holy_a command_n of_o the_o gospel_n do_v what_o thou_o know_v and_o thou_o shall_v know_v what_o as_o yet_o thou_o be_v ignorant_a of_o i_o have_v also_o consider_v with_o myself_o what_o truth_n be_v the_o most_o difficult_a to_o believe_v and_o to_o i_o it_o seem_v that_o to_o believe_v that_o god_n have_v give_v his_o only_a belove_a son_n to_o die_v for_o sinner_n be_v utter_o against_o humane_a reason_n partly_o because_o we_o think_v with_o ourselves_o that_o god_n may_v have_v forgive_v we_o our_o sin_n without_o so_o much_o ado_n as_o to_o have_v his_o own_o son_n suffer_v so_o much_o for_o we_o but_o we_o little_o consider_v that_o we_o many_o time_n do_v many_o thing_n ourselves_o with_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o trouble_n out_o of_o love_n which_o may_v be_v do_v as_o well_o without_o we_o so_o the_o mother_n nurse_v she_o own_o child_n and_o dress_v it_o and_o do_v many_o other_o thing_n which_o she_o may_v have_v do_v by_o other_o as_o effectual_o though_o she_o be_v only_o a_o spectator_n and_o further_o we_o must_v understand_v that_o there_o be_v two_o special_a reason_n why_o god_n give_v his_o son_n and_o christ_n give_v himself_o to_o die_v for_o we_o chief_o to_o satisfy_v his_o justice_n as_o also_o to_o satisfy_v we_o of_o his_o love_n and_o it_o be_v not_o easy_a to_o say_v which_o be_v hard_a to_o be_v satisfy_v for_o it_o be_v true_a that_o he_o that_o injure_v forgive_v not_o we_o therefore_o have_v so_o much_o offend_v god_n can_v hardly_o forgive_v he_o that_o be_v believe_v that_o he_o will_v forgive_v we_o he_o therefore_o to_o satisfy_v and_o cure_v our_o infidelity_n give_v we_o his_o only_a son_n to_o die_v for_o we_o to_o give_v we_o a_o infallible_a testimony_n of_o his_o love_n the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n do_v satisfy_v the_o justice_n of_o god_n by_o way_n of_o merit_n and_o our_o infidelity_n by_o way_n of_o motive_n the_o suffering_n of_o christ_n do_v reconcile_v god_n to_o we_o and_o the_o spirit_n of_o christ_n do_v reconcile_v we_o to_o god_n it_o be_v necessary_a that_o he_o that_o satisfy_v god_n justice_n shall_v be_v god_n and_o it_o be_v as_o necessary_a that_o he_o that_o satisfy_v we_o of_o god_n love_n shall_v be_v god_n also_o another_o thing_n that_o hinder_v our_o belief_n of_o this_o mystery_n be_v because_o the_o goodness_n and_o love_n of_o god_n be_v so_o exceed_v great_a that_o we_o can_v believe_v it_o for_o we_o be_v subject_a to_o judge_v of_o god_n by_o ourselves_o and_o therefore_o because_o we_o shall_v never_o suffer_v our_o only_a belove_a child_n to_o die_v a_o miserable_a shameful_a death_n to_o save_v a_o enemy_n therefore_o we_o judge_v that_o god_n can_v do_v so_o neither_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o more_o patient_a meek_a long-suffering_a we_o grow_v by_o the_o grace_n and_o spirit_n of_o god_n the_o more_o easy_o do_v we_o believe_v his_o love_n to_o we_o but_o if_o we_o true_o consider_v that_o which_o make_v this_o mystery_n of_o love_n incredible_a shall_v make_v we_o believe_v it_o viz._n the_o greatness_n of_o it_o for_o since_o god_n have_v say_v in_o his_o word_n that_o herein_o
may_v easy_o spiritualise_v it_o be_v store_v of_o m._n dod_n who_o intend_v to_o marry_v but_o be_v trouble_v with_o fear_n and_o care_n how_o he_o shall_v be_v able_a to_o live_v in_o that_o condition_n since_o his_o income_n be_v but_o small_a and_o but_o enough_o to_o maintain_v he_o in_o a_o unmarried_a condition_n look_v out_o of_o the_o window_n and_o see_v a_o hen_n scrape_v for_o food_n for_o her_o numerous_a brood_n about_o she_o think_v thus_o with_o himself_o this_o hen_n do_v but_o live_v before_o it_o have_v these_o chicken_n and_o now_o she_o live_v with_o all_o her_o little_a one_o upon_o which_o he_o add_v this_o thought_n also_o i_o see_v the_o fowl_n of_o the_o air_n neither_o sow_n nor_o reap_v nor_o gather_v into_o barn_n and_o yet_o my_o heavenly_a father_n feed_v they_o and_o if_o thou_o get_v that_o spiritual_a art_n like_o the_o bee_n to_o draw_v sweetness_n from_o every_o flower_n and_o if_o thou_o can_v turn_v every_o thing_n thou_o hear_v and_o see_v into_o holy_a meditation_n these_o ejaculatorie_a prayer_n will_v come_v of_o themselves_o for_o holy_a thought_n of_o god_n end_n in_o holy_a prayer_n to_o god_n 4._o get_v a_o sense_n of_o thy_o own_o vileness_n and_o inability_n of_o do_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a or_o resist_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v evil_a and_o that_o will_v make_v thou_o cry_v to_o god_n upon_o all_o occasion_n whether_o of_o duty_n or_o temptation_n 5._o hinder_v not_o the_o motion_n and_o breathe_n of_o the_o spirit_n upon_o thou_o quench_v not_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n 73.22_o how_o foolish_a be_v i_o and_o ignorant_a etc._n etc._n or_o whether_o by_o inquiry_n after_o god_n as_o when_o shall_v i_o come_v and_o appear_v before_o god_n psalm_n 42.2_o or_o with_o swearer_n 3._o though_o they_o be_v short_a let_v they_o be_v fervent_a 4._o let_v they_o general_o be_v mental_a except_o thou_o be_v alone_o and_o if_o they_o be_v vocal_a be_v rather_o passive_a than_o active_a in_o they_o as_o david_n hold_v his_o tongue_n until_o the_o fire_n burn_v and_o he_o can_v hold_v in_o no_o long_a but_o burst_v out_o in_o this_o expression_n lord_n let_v i_o know_v never_o have_v any_o family_n duty_n never_o pray_v with_o his_o wife_n nor_o never_o instruct_v his_o family_n do_v not_o this_o speech_n contradict_v itself_o so_o for_o a_o magistrate_n who_o will_v ever_o think_v this_o to_o be_v his_o character_n that_o he_o be_v for_o matter_n of_o religion_n like_o gallio_n never_o care_v for_o those_o thing_n so_o that_o man_n live_v peaceable_o as_o to_o the_o commonwealth_n nothing_o regard_v whether_o they_o profane_v the_o sabbath_n or_o blaspheme_v god_n or_o commit_v never_o such_o gross_a idolatry_n 5._o if_o thou_o can_v find_v a_o example_n of_o those_o who_o the_o scripture_n canonize_v for_o saint_n to_o direct_v thou_o of_o that_o wherein_o thou_o doubte_v and_o their_o example_n be_v right_o circumstantiate_v and_o commend_v that_o will_v serve_v to_o decide_v the_o controversy_n but_o if_o thou_o can_v find_v no_o example_n then_o consider_v what_o thou_o think_v in_o thy_o conscience_n such_o a_o saint_n will_v have_v do_v have_v they_o be_v in_o thy_o stead_n and_o especial_o what_o thou_o think_v christ_n will_v have_v do_v in_o thy_o case_n for_o we_o have_v such_o honourable_a thought_n of_o the_o saint_n and_o especial_o of_o christ_n whatsoever_o our_o conscience_n think_v to_o be_v evil_a we_o shall_v never_o think_v they_o will_v have_v do_v and_o our_o think_n that_o they_o will_v not_o have_v do_v it_o it_o strong_o argue_v that_o our_o conscience_n judge_v it_o to_o be_v evil_a and_o then_o by_o consequence_n we_o sin_v if_o we_o do_v it_o for_o whatsoever_o be_v not_o of_o faith_n be_v sin_n 6._o whatsoever_o thou_o commend_v in_o other_o do_v likewise_o whatsoever_o thou_o condemne_v do_v not_o for_o though_o it_o be_v no_o sure_a rule_n to_o judge_v of_o action_n by_o that_o that_o be_v certain_o evil_a in_o itself_o which_o i_o condemn_v in_o another_o for_o my_o condemn_v of_o it_o make_v it_o not_o evil_a in_o itself_o but_o make_v it_o so_o to_o i_o if_o i_o do_v it_o wherein_o we_o desire_v to_o be_v most_o eminent_a in_o and_o several_a rule_n to_o direct_v our_o choice_n it_o be_v a_o very_a good_a way_n for_o the_o attain_n of_o the_o perfection_n of_o holiness_n to_o choose_v some_o grace_n from_o among_o other_o wherein_o thou_o desire_v to_o attain_v the_o great_a eminency_n and_o most_o to_o exercise_v thyself_o in_o not_o but_o that_o thou_o ought_v to_o attain_v eminent_a degree_n of_o every_o grace_n but_o as_o minister_n endeavour_v to_o get_v all_o manner_n of_o learning_n as_o to_o be_v skilful_a in_o language_n church_n history_n in_o all_o the_o art_n and_o science_n to_o read_v philosopher_n school_n divine_v casuist_n commentator_n etc._n etc._n yet_o general_o there_o be_v one_o or_o other_o of_o these_o wherein_o they_o endeavour_v after_o great_a eminency_n and_o their_o great_a endeavour_n shall_v be_v to_o attain_v a_o clear_a and_o full_a understanding_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o we_o read_v of_o the_o saint_n in_o scripture_n though_o they_o neglect_v the_o practice_n of_o no_o grace_n yet_o they_o be_v general_o most_o eminent_a in_o some_o one_o as_o abraham_n in_o faith_n moses_n in_o meekness_n job_n in_o patience_n and_o elias_n in_o zeal_n now_o the_o rule_n to_o guide_v thou_o in_o the_o choice_n of_o that_o grace_n that_o thou_o shall_v most_v strive_v for_o eminency_n in_o be_v these_o 1._o choose_v that_o grace_n which_o be_v of_o most_o universal_a and_o special_a use_n as_o faith_n humility_n meekness_n etc._n etc._n for_o though_o some_o other_o grace_n shall_v be_v more_o excellent_a in_o itself_o yet_o that_o which_o be_v of_o more_o universal_a and_o continual_a use_n will_v be_v better_o in_o that_o respect_n for_o thou_o as_o patience_n be_v a_o excellent_a grace_n but_o the_o especial_a use_n of_o it_o be_v in_o adversity_n and_o in_o time_n of_o affliction_n which_o be_v not_o always_o for_o in_o time_n of_o comfort_n and_o abundance_n there_o be_v little_a use_n of_o patience_n but_o always_o of_o humility_n we_o must_v be_v humble_a in_o affliction_n and_o humble_a in_o comfort_n for_o we_o must_v rejoice_v with_o tremble_a sugar_n be_v more_o excellent_a and_o sweet_a than_o salt_n but_o we_o have_v more_o continual_a need_n of_o salt_n than_o of_o sugar_n and_o general_o spend_v more_o of_o the_o one_o than_o of_o the_o other_o 2._o choose_v that_o grace_n which_o be_v most_o suitable_a unto_o thy_o call_n be_v thou_o a_o magistrate_n a_o minister_n a_o tradesman_n there_o be_v several_a grace_n which_o be_v most_o suitable_a to_o these_o several_a employment_n distributive_a justice_n more_o suitable_a to_o a_o magistrate_n commutative_a justice_n to_o a_o tradesman_n spiritual_a charity_n to_o a_o minister_n instruct_v reprove_v comfort_v and_o exhort_v those_o that_o be_v under_o his_o charge_n 3._o choose_v that_o grace_n that_o be_v most_o suitable_a to_o thy_o relation_n be_v thou_o a_o virgin_n widow_n or_o marry_v a_o parent_n or_o a_o child_n or_o a_o servant_n these_o several_a relation_n do_v require_v several_a grace_n as_o a_o humble_a obedience_n and_o humility_n for_o servant_n and_o child_n and_o those_o that_o be_v under_o government_n a_o prudent_a keep_v authority_n over_o child_n for_o parent_n 4._o consider_v what_o be_v thy_o master_n sin_n and_o choose_v especial_o the_o contrary_a virtue_n as_o if_o thy_o master_n sin_n be_v covetousness_n practise_v liberality_n if_o it_o be_v pride_n practise_v abjection_n and_o abase_v of_o thyself_o and_o humble_a familiarity_n with_o thy_o inferior_n and_o with_o the_o poor_a 5._o consider_v to_o what_o temptation_n
