repentance_n lie_v in_o some_o transient_a act_n which_o upon_o new_a sin_n be_v to_o be_v repeat_v toties_fw-la quoties_fw-la like_o a_o medicine_n to_o be_v take_v as_o often_o as_o the_o same_o illness_n return_v forget_v that_o repentance_n be_v a_o state_n of_o health_n after_o sickness_n a_o state_n of_o virtue_n and_o obedience_n after_o vice_n and_o disobedience_n and_o that_o when_o such_o a_o state_n be_v once_o break_a it_o be_v not_o easy_a to_o be_v make_v whole_a again_o but_o like_o a_o break_a limb_n it_o can_v be_v set_v without_o great_a pain_n and_o long_a time_n to_o grow_v together_o again_o and_o that_o if_o it_o be_v often_o break_v it_o will_v contract_v a_o habitual_a weakness_n and_o lameness_n how_o long_o god_n will_v suffer_v a_o sinner_n thus_o to_o continue_v in_o a_o state_n of_o fall_v and_o rise_v repent_v and_o relapse_v before_o he_o cut_v he_o off_o from_o any_o hope_n of_o pardon_n or_o benefit_n of_o repentance_n we_o do_v not_o know_v nor_o how_o long_o a_o harden_a impenitent_a wretch_n may_v go_v on_o in_o a_o course_n of_o sin_v before_o the_o mean_n of_o grace_n and_o the_o day_n of_o salvation_n may_v be_v over_o with_o he_o so_o that_o if_o he_o knock_v god_n will_v not_o open_a and_o there_o shall_v be_v no_o place_n find_v for_o his_o repentance_n this_o be_v a_o secret_a likewise_o which_o be_v only_o in_o the_o breast_n of_o the_o almighty_a who_o threaten_v that_o his_o spirit_n shall_v not_o always_o strive_v with_o man_n gen._n 6.3_o and_o behold_v now_o be_v the_o accept_a time_n now_o be_v the_o day_n of_o salvation_n 2_o cor._n 6.2_o and_o to_o day_n if_o you_o will_v hear_v his_o voice_n harden_v not_o your_o heart_n heb._n 3.15_o and_o if_o thou_o in_o this_o thy_o day_n have_v know_v the_o be_v near_o isa_n 55.6_o so_o that_o god_n be_v not_o always_o to_o be_v find_v nor_o always_o near_o and_o it_o may_v be_v too_o late_o for_o the_o thing_n of_o our_o peace_n and_o the_o accept_a time_n and_o the_o day_n of_o salvation_n may_v not_o continue_v always_o but_o a_o man_n may_v sin_v so_o long_o till_o god_n will_v withdraw_v his_o grace_n and_o may_v come_v to_o a_o unpardonable_a pitch_n and_o a_o impenitent_a state_n and_o may_v despise_v the_o riches_n of_o god_n goodness_n and_o forbearance_n and_o long-suffering_a not_o know_v that_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n lead_v to_o repentance_n but_o after_o his_o hardness_n and_o impenitent_a heart_n may_v treasure_n up_o wrath_n against_o the_o day_n of_o wrath_n and_o revelation_n of_o the_o righteous_a judgement_n of_o god_n rom._n 2.4_o 5._o this_o shall_v keep_v we_o from_o neglect_v the_o present_a opportunity_n and_o not_o put_v off_o our_o repentance_n from_o day_n to_o day_n but_o to_o day_n while_o it_o be_v call_v to_o day_n harken_v to_o his_o voice_n lest_o we_o be_v harden_v with_o the_o deceitfulness_n of_o sin_n but_o if_o any_o be_v under_o those_o fear_n that_o he_o have_v bring_v himself_o to_o that_o sad_a state_n this_o be_v the_o only_a true_a satisfaction_n can_v be_v give_v he_o whilst_o he_o be_v willing_a to_o repent_v and_o have_v a_o just_a sense_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o of_o his_o ill_a state_n he_o be_v not_o harden_v and_o if_o god_n grace_n do_v so_o far_o work_v upon_o his_o mind_n as_o to_o make_v he_o see_v and_o apprehend_v the_o necessity_n of_o repentance_n and_o the_o forsake_v all_o his_o evil_a way_n than_o it_o be_v not_o quite_o withdraw_v from_o he_o and_o if_o he_o be_v willing_a to_o try_v all_o mean_n and_o use_v his_o best_a endeavour_n to_o get_v rid_v of_o his_o sin_n there_o be_v great_a hope_n that_o he_o may_v effect_v this_o for_o god_n will_v never_o be_v want_v to_o assist_v our_o sincere_a will_n and_o hearty_a endeavour_n and_o if_o his_o spirit_n work_v in_o we_o to_o will_v and_o to_o desire_v to_o leave_v our_o sin_n from_o a_o right_a apprehension_n of_o the_o danger_n and_o mischief_n of_o they_o and_o produce_v such_o conviction_n and_o illumination_n in_o our_o mind_n it_o be_v certain_a it_o have_v not_o abandon_v or_o desert_v we_o and_o it_o will_v work_v in_o we_o to_o do_v also_o and_o to_o effect_v and_o perform_v those_o good_a thought_n and_o purpose_n if_o we_o persist_v in_o they_o and_o endeavour_v with_o our_o utmost_a power_n to_o make_v they_o good_a and_o effectual_a no_o man_n be_v cut_v off_o from_o pardon_n who_o repent_v and_o become_v a_o good_a man_n though_o he_o have_v be_v never_o so_o bad_a a_o one_o and_o no_o man_n will_v have_v god_n grace_n deny_v he_o who_o be_v at_o any_o time_n sincere_o willing_a and_o desirous_a to_o make_v use_n of_o it_o but_o it_o be_v a_o hard_a and_o insensible_a state_n that_o have_v sin_v away_o its_o life_n and_o its_o day_n of_o grace_n and_o have_v only_o deep_a horror_n and_o fruitless_a sorrow_n when_o it_o be_v too_o late_o to_o amend_v and_o become_v a_o good_a man_n that_o be_v hopeless_a and_o desperate_a sect_n ii_o of_o the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n its_o nature_n and_o whether_o pardonable_a or_o no._n what_o be_v the_o particular_a nature_n of_o the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o wherein_o that_o which_o be_v so_o dreadful_a do_v true_o consist_v the_o scripture_n methinks_v be_v very_o plain_a though_o they_o who_o have_v leave_v that_o and_o follow_v their_o own_o or_o other_o conjecture_n and_o opinion_n about_o it_o be_v very_o confuse_v and_o intricate_a and_o very_o different_a and_o divide_v among_o themselves_o they_o have_v make_v a_o great_a many_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n when_o god_n have_v no_o where_n in_o scripture_n make_v but_o one_o and_o that_o be_v of_o so_o dreadful_a and_o heinous_a a_o nature_n we_o must_v be_v careful_a to_o about_o it_o to_o be_v this_o a_o blasphemous_a charge_v of_o the_o miracle_n he_o do_v by_o the_o power_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n to_o the_o power_n of_o the_o devil_n this_o the_o pharisee_n do_v matth._n 12.24_o when_o christ_n have_v wrought_v a_o mighty_a cure_n and_o miracle_n upon_o a_o demoniac_a to_o the_o admiration_n of_o all_o the_o people_n that_o have_v bring_v he_o unto_o he_o ver_fw-la 21._o then_o be_v bring_v unto_o he_o one_o possess_v of_o a_o devil_n blind_a and_o dumb_a and_o he_o heal_v he_o insomuch_o that_o the_o blind_a and_o dumb_a both_o speak_v and_o see_v that_o it_o may_v as_o well_o be_v pretend_v that_o all_o miracle_n that_o be_v do_v by_o their_o prophet_n of_o old_a or_o by_o other_o among_o they_o afterward_o be_v perform_v by_o a_o diabolical_a power_n as_o well_o as_o he_o and_o so_o they_o will_v destroy_v the_o force_n and_o credit_n of_o their_o own_o miracle_n as_o well_o as_o those_o he_o do_v he_o immediate_o proceed_v to_o discourse_v of_o this_o sin_n wherefore_o i_o say_v unto_o you_o all_o manner_n of_o sin_n and_o blasphemy_n shall_v be_v forgive_v unto_o man_n but_o the_o blasphemy_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n make_v use_v of_o many_o mean_n and_o remedy_n to_o convince_v and_o convert_v the_o jew_n the_o scribe_n and_o the_o pharisee_n when_o he_o have_v appoint_v and_o decree_v that_o none_o of_o those_o shall_v have_v any_o effect_n or_o good_a operation_n upon_o they_o this_o will_v hardly_o be_v consistent_a with_o the_o goodness_n and_o mercy_n or_o with_o the_o truth_n and_o sincerity_n of_o the_o bless_a god_n nor_o do_v he_o ever_o for_o any_o one_o sin_n but_o for_o a_o long_a obstinate_a course_n of_o many_o provoke_a sin_n continue_v in_o irreclaimable_o against_o the_o method_n of_o divine_a grace_n give_v up_o any_o person_n to_o hardness_n of_o heart_n there_o remain_v i_o confess_v another_o way_n by_o which_o a_o sin_n may_v become_v unpardonable_a and_o that_o be_v by_o be_v exempt_v by_o god_n from_o the_o general_a promise_n and_o covenant_n of_o pardon_n which_o he_o have_v make_v with_o mankind_n he_o who_o have_v all_o sovereign_a power_n and_o a_o entire_a right_n of_o punishment_n and_o upon_o who_o free_a grace_n and_o arbitrary_a favour_n all_o pardon_n and_o forgiveness_n depend_v may_v except_v what_o sin_n he_o please_v out_o of_o his_o general_n act_n the_o holy_a ghost_n be_v so_o or_o no_o be_v the_o question_n or_o whether_o this_o expression_n of_o our_o saviour_n concern_v it_o that_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v forgive_v may_v be_v mollify_v and_o understand_v not_o in_o the_o utmost_a rigour_n of_o the_o word_n but_o as_o a_o great_a many_o of_o the_o best_a interpreter_n of_o scripture_n have_v judge_v particular_o st_n chrysostome_n of_o old_a and_o dr._n hammond_n of_o late_a that_o this_o sin_n shall_v hardly_o and_o not_o without_o great_a difficulty_n be_v forgive_v and_o not_o so_o soon_o or_o so_o easy_o as_o other_o sin_n that_o it_o suppose_v and_o proceed_v from_o such_o a_o corruption_n of_o the_o mind_n that_o be_v more_o dangerous_a and_o more_o hard_a to_o be_v cure_v than_o any_o other_o distemper_n it_o be_v subject_a to_o but_o yet_o that_o it_o be_v not_o quite_o impossible_a as_o the_o word_n literal_o take_v seem_v to_o imply_v i_o shall_v offer_v you_o the_o reason_n that_o plead_v for_o this_o opinion_n and_o then_o determine_v what_o be_v most_o safe_a and_o satisfy_v in_o this_o matter_n 1._o it_o be_v very_o usual_a in_o scripture_n to_o represent_v a_o thing_n that_o be_v very_o hard_a and_o difficult_a as_o if_o it_o be_v utter_o impossible_a and_o never_o can_v be_v this_o our_o saviour_n himself_o do_v in_o the_o case_n of_o the_o rich_a man_n enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n to_o express_v the_o hardness_n of_o it_o he_o do_v it_o by_o a_o thing_n that_o be_v utter_o impossible_a matth._n 19.24_o it_o be_v easy_a for_o a_o camel_n to_o go_v through_o the_o eye_n of_o a_o needle_n than_o for_o a_o rich_a man_n to_o enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n and_o so_o do_v the_o prophet_n also_o make_v use_n of_o a_o natural_a impossibility_n to_o represent_v the_o great_a difficulty_n of_o a_o man_n turn_v from_o a_o long_a course_n and_o custom_n of_o sin_v jer._n 13.23_o can_v the_o aethiopian_a change_n his_o skin_n or_o the_o leopard_n his_o spot_n then_o may_v you_o also_o do_v good_a that_o be_v accustom_v to_o do_v evil_a not_o but_o it_o be_v possible_a notwithstanding_o those_o proverbial_a expression_n that_o a_o man_n who_o have_v be_v accustom_v to_o do_v evil_a a_o very_a great_a while_n may_v yet_o be_v bring_v off_o from_o his_o sin_n and_o become_v a_o good_a man_n or_o else_o all_o the_o exhortation_n to_o repentance_n and_o promise_v of_o the_o gospel_n be_v in_o vain_a and_o so_o may_v a_o good_a man_n become_v a_o very_a bad_a one_o too_o and_o fall_v from_o his_o own_o steadfastness_n and_o become_v guilty_a of_o abominable_a sin_n as_o david_n do_v that_o be_v a_o man_n after_o god_n own_o heart_n notwithstanding_o that_o st._n john_n in_o the_o same_o way_n and_o manner_n of_o expression_n with_o these_o declare_v concern_v he_o 1_o ep._n 3.9_o whosoever_o be_v bear_v of_o god_n do_v not_o commit_v sin_n for_o his_o seed_n remain_v in_o he_o and_o he_o can_v sin_v because_o he_o be_v horn_n of_o god_n that_o phrase_n he_o can_v denote_v not_o a_o utter_a impossibility_n for_o the_o prophet_n as_o well_o as_o experience_n too_o plain_o show_v the_o contrary_a that_o a_o righteous_a man_n may_v turn_v from_o his_o righteousness_n and_o commit_v iniquity_n and_o die_v in_o it_o ezek._n 18.26_o thing_n be_v sometime_o so_o express_v in_o scripture_n as_o they_o often_o be_v also_o among_o man_n as_o if_o there_o be_v no_o hope_n nor_o no_o probable_a mean_n of_o effect_v a_o thing_n when_o yet_o there_o be_v very_o certain_a one_o as_o in_o that_o expression_n 1_o sam._n 2.25_o not_o a_o little_a parallel_n to_o this_o if_o one_o man_n sin_n against_o another_o the_o judge_n shall_v judge_v he_o but_o if_o a_o man_n sin_n against_o the_o lord_n who_o shall_v entreat_v for_o he_o not_o that_o there_o be_v no_o advocate_n nor_o no_o way_n of_o intercede_v with_o god_n when_o a_o man_n thus_o sin_n against_o he_o but_o to_o show_v the_o guilt_n and_o danger_n of_o it_o above_o the_o other_o that_o place_n of_o the_o hebrew_n chap._n 6._o ver_fw-la 4._o for_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o those_o who_o be_v once_o enlighten_v etc._n etc._n if_o they_o shall_v fall_v away_o to_o renew_v they_o again_o to_o repentance_n that_o be_v by_o very_o good_a interpreter_n think_v to_o denote_v only_o great_a difficulty_n and_o not_o impossibility_n in_o the_o utmost_a rigour_n and_o strictness_n which_o it_o be_v plain_a none_o of_o the_o other_o phrase_n however_o they_o may_v sound_v must_v be_v take_v in_o and_o therefore_o this_o expression_n of_o our_o saviour_n concern_v the_o sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n they_o think_v may_v be_v mollify_v and_o understand_v with_o the_o same_o largeness_n and_o latitude_n as_o those_o and_o to_o import_v only_o thus_o much_o that_o it_o shall_v be_v more_o difficult_o repent_v of_o and_o so_o more_o hardly_o forgive_v than_o any_o other_o sin_n 2._o both_o the_o first_o part_n of_o this_o verse_n that_o all_o manner_n of_o sin_n and_o blasphemy_n shall_v be_v forgive_v unto_o man_n and_o many_o other_o absolute_a and_o unconditional_a promise_n or_o threaten_n or_o like_a declaration_n in_o religion_n and_o make_v a_o mock_n of_o sin_n a_o abuse_v the_o scripture_n and_o ridicul_v the_o holy_a word_n of_o god_n a_o obstinate_a resistance_n of_o all_o the_o motion_n of_o god_n holy_a spirit_n upon_o our_o mind_n these_o and_o such_o like_a gross_a and_o obstinate_a impiety_n though_o i_o do_v not_o think_v they_o be_v any_o of_o they_o the_o very_a sin_n against_o the_o holy_a more_o of_o the_o ill_a symptom_n of_o that_o upon_o they_o and_o therefore_o we_o ought_v especial_o to_o avoid_v they_o lest_o they_o bring_v we_o by_o degree_n into_o that_o sad_a state_n which_o to_o reason_n and_o religion_n but_o they_o complain_v of_o this_o bondage_n of_o corruption_n and_o this_o body_n of_o death_n which_o they_o can_v be_v deliver_v from_o rom._n 8.21_o and_o 7.24_o grace_n and_o religion_n though_o it_o give_v we_o another_o principle_n and_o convey_v new_a power_n of_o a_o divine_a and_o spiritual_a life_n into_o our_o soul_n yet_o whilst_o the_o animal_n and_o sensual_a life_n remain_v and_o whilst_o we_o be_v compound_v of_o flesh_n and_o blood_n as_o well_o as_o spirit_n and_o reason_n and_o have_v a_o carnal_a as_o well_o as_o spiritual_a principle_n in_o we_o there_o will_v be_v a_o mighty_a struggle_n and_o a_o great_a contest_v between_o those_o two_o and_o a_o kind_n of_o civil_a war_n in_o our_o breast_n between_o those_o different_a party_n and_o which_o of_o those_o shall_v be_v uppermost_a and_o have_v the_o chief_a power_n and_o gain_v the_o victory_n be_v the_o great_a point_n and_o the_o great_a concern_v of_o all_o virtue_n and_o religion_n since_o in_o all_o of_o we_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v the_o flesh_n lu_v against_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n against_o the_o flesh_n and_o these_o be_v contrary_a one_o to_o the_o other_o so_o that_o we_o can_v do_v the_o thing_n that_o we_o will_v gal._n 5.17_o and_o this_o we_o know_v by_o experience_n as_o well_o as_o by_o revelation_n now_o this_o concupiscence_n that_o remain_v in_o good_a man_n be_v often_o matter_n of_o great_a trouble_n to_o they_o and_o they_o know_v not_o what_o to_o judge_v of_o it_o or_o how_o far_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n and_o aught_o miserable_a how_o with_o rage_n and_o envy_n will_v it_o look_v up_o to_o that_o happiness_n it_o have_v lose_v and_o see_v other_o enjoy_v and_o vex_v itself_o with_o fury_n that_o it_o shall_v refuse_v and_o reject_v that_o when_o it_o be_v offer_v to_o it_o and_o this_o one_o thought_n will_v double_v and_o increase_v its_o misery_n and_o make_v it_o curse_v and_o tear_v itself_o that_o it_o be_v its_o own_o choice_n 3._o as_o the_o mind_n with_o look_v back_o will_v be_v fill_v with_o remerse_n and_o anguish_n upon_o its_o past_a sin_n and_o past_a madness_n so_o by_o look_v forward_o and_o see_v no_o end_n of_o the_o misery_n it_o be_v in_o it_o will_v be_v fill_v and_o overwhelm_v with_o despair_n which_o be_v a_o passion_n of_o mind_n so_o perfect_o and_o so_o unspeakable_o miserable_a that_o i_o shall_v not_o venture_v to_o describe_v it_o for_o it_o be_v beyond_o any_o thing_n we_o can_v imagine_v and_o it_o proper_o belong_v to_o the_o next_o head_n which_o be_v the_o eternity_n and_o endless_a duration_n of_o these_o torment_n and_o misery_n which_o though_o it_o be_v but_o a_o circumstance_n of_o time_n and_o not_o proper_o that_o wherein_o they_o consist_v yet_o be_v the_o most_o dreadful_a perfection_n and_o completion_n of_o they_o which_o i_o shall_v consider_v by_o and_o by_o let_v we_o now_o but_o serious_o think_v with_o ourselves_o what_o a_o dreadful_a state_n it_o be_v to_o be_v under_o all_o this_o torment_n of_o mind_n and_o pain_n of_o body_n to_o lie_v thus_o upon_o the_o rack_n of_o the_o great_a torture_n both_o from_o within_o and_o without_o and_o that_o in_o such_o extremity_n that_o they_o shall_v make_v dreadful_a and_o hideous_a sign_n and_o expression_n of_o it_o in_o weep_v and_o mourning_n anguish_n and_o remorse_n of_o mind_n and_o nothing_o to_o take_v off_o or_o divert_v or_o give_v the_o least_o intermission_n to_o all_o these_o but_o a_o angry_a god_n above_o a_o dark_a and_o bottomless_a pit_n of_o burn_a brimstone_n below_o and_o frightful_a and_o ugly_a and_o insult_a spirit_n like_v so_o many_o executioner_n all_o about_o it_o and_o no_o friend_n to_o call_v to_o to_o pity_v or_o to_o help_v it_o o_o sad_a and_o miserable_a and_o intolerable_a condition_n who_o will_v not_o do_v all_o he_o can_v to_o warn_v other_o and_o himself_o that_o they_o come_v not_o to_o never_o so_o many_o thousand_o year_n but_o there_o shall_v be_v still_o a_o infinite_a eternity_n behind_o and_o so_o as_o much_o as_o there_o be_v at_o the_o first_o beginning_n who_o can_v think_v of_o this_o without_o the_o utmost_a horror_n and_o amazement_n and_o have_v his_o thought_n swallow_v up_o with_o the_o dreadful_a consideration_n of_o it_o it_o be_v so_o great_a that_o some_o have_v have_v their_o reason_n overcome_v and_o overwhelm_v by_o it_o so_o that_o they_o have_v think_v it_o unagreeable_a and_o inconsistent_a with_o god_n goodness_n and_o justice_n to_o inflict_v so_o long_o and_o so_o great_a a_o misery_n upon_o any_o of_o his_o creature_n and_o have_v therefore_o endeavour_v to_o limit_v this_o eternity_n to_o a_o short_a compass_n of_o time_n and_o not_o to_o extend_v it_o to_o a_o absolute_a but_o a_o limit_a eternity_n as_o sometime_o it_o be_v understand_v in_o scripture_n and_o therefore_o to_o reconcile_v all_o those_o place_n of_o scripture_n to_o this_o notion_n of_o it_o and_o to_o interpret_v they_o so_o that_o eternity_n in_o the_o full_a and_o utmost_a sense_n may_v not_o be_v understand_v by_o they_o i_o shall_v therefore_o brief_o examine_v this_o argument_n which_o on_o the_o one_o side_n seem_v very_o careful_a of_o the_o credit_n and_o honour_n of_o the_o divine_a justice_n and_o goodness_n but_o on_o the_o other_o take_v off_o extreme_o from_o the_o utmost_a terror_n of_o hellish_a torment_n in_o deny_v they_o to_o be_v eternal_a so_o that_o it_o may_v tend_v in_o great_a measure_n to_o take_v off_o the_o power_n and_o force_v of_o those_o which_o be_v the_o great_a restraint_n that_o god_n can_v lay_v upon_o sin_n and_o wickedness_n and_o since_o so_o few_o be_v prevail_v upon_o by_o they_o though_o under_o the_o doctrine_n and_o persuasion_n of_o their_o be_v eternal_a how_o much_o few_o will_v be_v so_o if_o they_o think_v they_o otherwise_o i_o shall_v therefore_o first_o brief_o show_v how_o this_o eternity_n of_o hellish_a torment_n be_v agreeable_a to_o god_n goodness_n second_o how_o it_o be_v plain_o and_o undeniable_o prove_v from_o scripture_n and_o revelation_n first_o how_o '_o tls_o strong_o move_v and_o determine_v he_o the_o right_a way_n and_o secret_o incline_v his_o mind_n to_o choose_v and_o his_o understanding_n to_o see_v and_o consider_v what_o be_v his_o true_a interest_n and_o happiness_n and_o by_o a_o inward_a energy_n and_o virtue_n as_o a_o principle_n of_o life_n act_v secret_o and_o undiscernable_o upon_o all_o our_o faculty_n change_v our_o thought_n desire_n and_o affection_n and_o work_v upon_o our_o mind_n though_o in_o a_o way_n agreeable_a to_o our_o rational_a faculty_n yet_o by_o a_o power_n superior_a and_o superad_v to_o they_o and_o now_o let_v every_o sinner_n consider_v what_o great_a motive_n and_o encouragement_n and_o so_o what_o obligation_n he_o have_v to_o repent_v by_o the_o gospel_n how_o powerful_o and_o how_o endear_o contrive_v such_o a_o expedient_a as_o show_v the_o most_o admirable_a wisdom_n and_o the_o most_o wonderful_a mercy_n both_o together_o and_o that_o be_v for_o the_o sake_n and_o by_o the_o mediation_n of_o a_o sacrifice_n to_o pardon_v and_o yet_o to_o punish_v the_o sinner_n by_o the_o same_o way_n to_o give_v a_o instance_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o a_o remonstrance_n of_o his_o off_o the_o edge_n and_o severity_n of_o his_o law_n so_o far_o as_o prudence_n and_o the_o wise_a end_n of_o government_n will_v give_v leave_n but_o not_o so_o far_o as_o shall_v give_v any_o manner_n of_o encouragement_n to_o disobedience_n and_o wickedness_n and_o that_o will_v be_v unavoidable_a if_o he_o shall_v ever_o grant_v a_o pardon_n to_o wicked_a man_n upon_o any_o other_o impenitence_n or_o in_o the_o habit_n of_o any_o unrepented_a sin_n they_o be_v under_o as_o absolute_a a_o sentence_n of_o condemnation_n as_o if_o the_o great_a judge_n have_v pronounce_v it_o upon_o they_o and_o bid_v they_o go_v you_o curse_v whilst_o they_o continue_v such_o there_o be_v no_o more_o hope_n of_o mercy_n for_o they_o than_o for_o the_o damn_a themselves_o their_o state_n timely_a repentance_n be_v the_o best_a and_o certain_a remedy_n for_o it_o chap._n iu._n the_o ill_a consequence_n draw_v from_o the_o privilege_n of_o repentance_n obviate_v and_o prevent_v the_o most_o wicked_a and_o great_a of_o sinner_n who_o have_v any_o thought_n of_o their_o soul_n and_o of_o another_o world_n though_o they_o be_v not_o prevail_v upon_o by_o this_o to_o become_v better_a yet_o make_v this_o reserve_n and_o refuge_n to_o themselves_o that_o they_o will_v repent_v hereafter_o at_o some_o time_n or_o other_o and_o so_o escape_v the_o wrath_n to_o come_v they_o know_v as_o shall_v destroy_v all_o religion_n and_o make_v void_a the_o necessity_n of_o obedience_n and_o a_o good_a life_n which_o according_a to_o these_o man_n thought_n be_v unavoidable_o do_v by_o this_o gospel-priviledge_n of_o repentance_n for_o since_o say_v they_o a_o man_n be_v as_o certain_o safe_a who_o come_v in_o at_o any_o time_n upon_o repentance_n and_o shall_v be_v as_o certain_o save_v by_o the_o term_n and_o condition_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o if_o he_o have_v spend_v all_o his_o life_n in_o the_o strict_a virtue_n and_o religion_n what_o need_n be_v there_o of_o such_o a_o early_a and_o constant_a and_o perpetual_a obedience_n and_o spend_v a_o whole_a life_n in_o the_o servitude_n and_o drudgery_n of_o religion_n when_o come_v in_o at_o the_o eleven_o hour_n and_o work_v but_o a_o short_a space_n at_o the_o latter_a end_n of_o the_o day_n will_v have_v as_o much_o wage_n and_o as_o sure_a a_o reward_n and_o be_v as_o certain_o accept_v by_o god_n shall_v not_o a_o sinner_n when_o ever_o he_o return_v and_o repent_v find_v mercy_n be_v there_o any_o time_n or_o bound_n prefix_v to_o his_o repentance_n so_o that_o he_o may_v not_o do_v it_o so_o many_o year_n hence_o as_o well_o as_o at_o present_a and_o after_o he_o have_v
baptism_n and_o therefore_o to_o suppose_v a_o man_n may_v be_v save_v upon_o baptism_n though_o he_o be_v not_o a_o good_a man_n be_v not_o allowable_a but_o if_o he_o die_v just_a upon_o it_o god_n will_v judge_v he_o according_a to_o the_o present_a temper_n of_o his_o mind_n and_o the_o past_a course_n of_o his_o action_n allow_v he_o the_o gracious_a term_n of_o the_o gospel_n which_o he_o have_v now_o a_o right_a to_o by_o his_o baptism_n but_o to_o think_v he_o can_v be_v save_v without_o any_o actual_a goodness_n in_o his_o mind_n and_o in_o his_o life_n be_v i_o think_v very_o false_a though_o a_o less_o degree_n may_v save_v he_o that_o know_v not_o baptism_n or_o christianity_n than_o he_o that_o do_v but_o as_o for_o the_o baptism_n of_o blood_n or_o allow_v martyrdom_n the_o privilege_n of_o baptism_n this_o be_v not_o found_v upon_o ordinary_a right_n but_o presumptive_a equity_n and_o salvation_n be_v allow_v to_o they_o because_o no_o man_n but_o must_v be_v presume_v to_o be_v a_o very_a good_a man_n and_o have_v a_o high_a degree_n of_o actual_a virtue_n and_o holiness_n who_o die_v a_o martyr_n and_o prefer_v religion_n before_o every_o thing_n in_o this_o world_n even_o his_o very_a life_n and_o without_o this_o in_o some_o high_a measure_n than_o mere_a purpose_n and_o resolution_n and_o mere_a sorrow_n and_o repentance_n for_o not_o have_v it_o i_o deny_v that_o any_o baptism_n or_o any_o thing_n else_o will_v save_v a_o man._n this_o i_o say_v to_o prevent_v a_o objection_n that_o it_o will_v not_o otherwise_o be_v easy_a to_o answer_v which_o be_v this_o that_o if_o the_o grace_n of_o baptism_n will_v send_v a_o wicked_a and_o unqualify_v soul_n to_o heaven_n by_o virtue_n of_o a_o mere_a die_a repentance_n without_o any_o degree_n of_o actual_a holiness_n without_o which_o the_o scripture_n tell_v we_o no_o man_n shall_v see_v the_o lord_n why_o may_v not_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o eucharist_n do_v the_o same_o by_o the_o like_a die_a repentance_n or_o according_a to_o the_o roman_a principle_n the_o grace_n of_o penance_n and_o absolution_n or_o of_o extreme_a unction_n which_o have_v all_o the_o same_o superstitious_a error_n at_o the_o bottom_n sect_n ii_o the_o plea_n and_o pretence_n on_o behalf_n of_o a_o deathbed_n repentance_n answer_v have_v show_v that_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o the_o case_n of_o the_o thief_n upon_o the_o cross_n to_o support_v or_o justify_v the_o validity_n and_o efficacy_n of_o a_o deathbed_n repentance_n i_o shall_v now_o examine_v the_o other_o plea_n and_o pretence_n which_o be_v bring_v for_o it_o and_o show_v how_o weak_a and_o ungrounded_a they_o be_v so_o that_o no_o man_n may_v believe_v such_o a_o dangerous_a and_o mistake_a doctrine_n nor_o venture_v his_o soul_n not_o only_o upon_o such_o a_o uncertain_a hazard_n but_o such_o a_o certain_a danger_n and_o inevitable_a ruin_n as_o that_o will_v bring_v upon_o he_o if_o he_o presume_v upon_o it_o and_o trust_n to_o it_o i_o shall_v consider_v and_o rectify_v the_o common_a prejudices_fw-la that_o be_v about_o it_o which_o be_v chief_o these_o follow_v first_o that_o at_o whatsoever_o time_n a_o sinner_n repent_v he_o shall_v find_v mercy_n second_o that_o if_o a_o man_n do_v so_o hearty_o and_o sincere_o resolve_v upon_o a_o good_a life_n that_o god_n see_v if_o he_o shall_v live_v he_o will_v make_v this_o good_a than_o this_o will_n shall_v be_v take_v for_o the_o deed._n three_o that_o god_n may_v turn_v and_o change_v a_o man_n heart_n on_o a_o sudden_a four_o that_o by_o deny_v the_o efficacy_n of_o a_o deathbed_n repentance_n we_o throw_v man_n into_o despair_n and_o take_v away_o the_o argument_n that_o shall_v persuade_v they_o then_o to_o repent_v may_v bring_v we_o to_o repentance_n as_o st._n paul_n say_v godly_a sorrow_n work_v repentance_n 2_o cor._n 7.10_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o the_o thing_n itself_o we_o may_v as_o well_o suppose_v that_o feel_n the_o smart_n of_o a_o wound_n be_v heal_v it_o as_o mere_a sorrow_n for_o sin_n be_v true_a repentance_n few_o sinner_n and_o few_o malefactor_n but_o be_v thus_o sorrowful_a when_o they_o come_v near_o the_o place_n of_o punishment_n and_o execution_n they_o be_v sorry_a they_o must_v suffer_v for_o their_o sin_n and_o the_o terror_n of_o their_o suffering_n make_v sin_n very_o bitter_a to_o they_o but_o if_o that_o be_v remove_v they_o will_v love_v they_o and_o commit_v they_o perhaps_o as_o much_o as_o ever_o if_o sorrow_n alone_o for_o sin_n though_o never_o so_o deep_a and_o grievous_a be_v true_a repentance_n than_o cain_n and_o judas_n be_v as_o great_a penitent_n as_o any_o and_o so_o will_v all_o the_o damn_a be_v to_o all_o eternity_n who_o will_v thus_o sorrow_n and_o thus_o repent_v for_o ever_o of_o their_o sin_n but_o without_o any_o amendment_n and_o they_o will_v wish_v also_o a_o thousand_o time_n that_o they_o have_v be_v wise_a and_o live_v better_a and_o have_v not_o by_o their_o foolish_a and_o wicked_a course_n bring_v themselves_o into_o such_o a_o miserable_a and_o wretched_a condition_n and_o will_v god_n but_o let_v they_o live_v over_o their_o life_n again_o oh_o how_o much_o better_o will_v they_o be_v how_o much_o otherwise_o will_v they_o live_v and_o how_o hearty_o will_v they_o purpose_v and_o resolve_v to_o leave_v all_o their_o sin_n and_o lead_v a_o very_a good_a life_n will_v god_n but_o give_v they_o opportunity_n and_o space_n and_o try_v they_o once_o more_o this_o be_v the_o language_n of_o sinner_n both_o in_o this_o world_n and_o the_o next_o too_o when_o the_o day_n of_o grace_n and_o the_o time_n of_o trial_n be_v over_o when_o it_o be_v too_o late_o to_o do_v all_o this_o which_o they_o now_o wish_v they_o have_v do_v but_o will_v not_o do_v it_o when_o god_n give_v they_o time_n and_o so_o they_o have_v lose_v the_o only_a opportunity_n which_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o retrieve_v will_v god_n grant_v either_o the_o sinner_n that_o be_v damn_v or_o the_o sinner_n that_o be_v a_o die_a opportunity_n to_o live_v again_o they_o will_v both_o be_v better_a perhaps_o but_o since_o he_o do_v not_o he_o will_v judge_v they_o not_o according_a to_o what_o they_o will_v be_v but_o what_o they_o have_v be_v not_o according_a to_o what_o they_o wish_v and_o resolve_v to_o do_v but_o what_o they_o actual_o have_v do_v since_o the_o scripture_n no_o where_o tell_v we_o that_o man_n shall_v receive_v according_a to_o their_o wish_n their_o purpose_n and_o resolution_n but_o according_a to_o their_o work_n and_o action_n whether_o they_o have_v be_v good_a or_o evil_n and_o therefore_o 2_o i_o believe_v there_o be_v no_o ground_n for_o that_o determination_n which_o have_v be_v often_o give_v about_o a_o deathbed_n repentance_n n_o that_o if_o a_o man_n purpose_n be_v then_o so_o sincere_a that_o he_o will_v make_v they_o good_a if_o he_o live_v that_o then_o they_o may_v be_v sufficient_a to_o his_o salvation_n have_v god_n give_v he_o time_n to_o make_v they_o good_a and_o from_o a_o bad_a man_n to_o have_v become_v a_o good_a one_o which_o be_v the_o only_a true_a notion_n i_o know_v of_o repentance_n than_o indeed_o he_o have_v fall_v under_o the_o promise_n and_o the_o measure_n of_o the_o gospel_n where_o god_n have_v declare_v pardon_n to_o all_o man_n that_o repent_v and_o amend_v but_o no_o where_o that_o i_o know_v

at_o the_o last_o to_o come_v to_o heaven_n good_a god_n what_o thought_n have_v such_o man_n of_o the_o great_a work_n and_o business_n of_o religion_n which_o ought_v to_o be_v the_o great_a work_n and_o employment_n of_o our_o life_n who_o think_v to_o dispatch_v it_o all_o in_o a_o few_o moment_n as_o if_o god_n give_v we_o not_o our_o life_n to_o spend_v they_o in_o his_o service_n and_o to_o his_o glory_n and_o to_o work_v out_o our_o salvation_n and_o fit_n ourselves_o for_o heaven_n and_o do_v good_a and_o grow_v in_o grace_n and_o the_o like_a great_a end_n of_o life_n but_o we_o may_v pass_v by_o all_o those_o and_o wallow_v in_o our_o lust_n and_o spend_v almost_o all_o our_o day_n in_o the_o gratification_n of_o vice_n and_o wickedness_n and_o in_o the_o devil_n service_n and_o do_v and_o take_v care_n of_o at_o the_o last_o though_o not_o quite_o so_o well_o indeed_o yet_o upon_o a_o forced-put_a the_o whole_a business_n may_v be_v dispatch_v in_o a_o very_a little_a time_n holy_a life_n though_o they_o believe_v religion_n and_o be_v very_o far_o from_o any_o atheistical_a doubt_n and_o denial_n of_o it_o but_o they_o think_v to_o do_v all_o the_o great_a work_n at_o the_o last_o something_o that_o shall_v serve_v instead_o of_o all_o the_o rest_n i._n e._n to_o repent_v and_o be_v sorrowful_a for_o their_o sin_n for_o they_o account_v this_o sufficient_a repentance_n and_o that_o the_o die_v thus_o penitent_a shall_v be_v as_o well_o as_o if_o they_o have_v mind_v religion_n all_o their_o life_n and_o discharge_v the_o great_a end_n of_o it_o if_o liableness_n to_o it_o but_o god_n be_v subject_a to_o no_o such_o weakness_n and_o uneasiness_n and_o therefore_o pity_v in_o he_o be_v but_o a_o wise_a exercise_n or_o effect_v of_o his_o goodness_n he_o be_v pityful_a and_o mercyful_a so_o he_o be_v wise_a and_o just_a too_o and_o will_v not_o break_v the_o stand_a rule_n of_o the_o gospel_n nor_o the_o wise_a measure_n of_o his_o divine_a government_n by_o which_o he_o impartial_o distribute_v reward_n and_o punishment_n according_a to_o man_n work_n out_o of_o any_o fond_a consideration_n to_o any_o man_n particular_a case_n he_o
