gracious_a act_n will_v do_v the_o business_n infallible_o though_o not_o immediate_o but_o per_fw-la medium_n for_o have_v these_o premise_n and_o that_o assistance_n and_o the_o mind_n not_o divert_v it_o will_v be_v force_v to_o the_o consequence_n by_o the_o clearness_n of_o the_o objective_a connexion_n see_v the_o mean_a saint_n can_v resist_v such_o evidence_n of_o consequence_n nor_o can_v a_o thousand_o dictate_v within_o mere_o objective_n make_v a_o man_n one_o whit_n the_o wise_a without_o subjective_a light_n to_o perceive_v they_o more_o than_o a_o man_n purblind_a can_v see_v the_o sunshining_a till_o his_o eye_n be_v open_v albeit_o george_n keith_n spurn_v at_o this_o distinction_n between_o objective_n and_o subjective_n which_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v call_v effective_a as_o antichristian_a and_o deceitful_a in_o his_o quakerism_n no_o popery_n page_n 83.84_o as_o if_o he_o will_v for_o ever_o confound_v a_o object_n with_o a_o efficient_a cause_n or_o a_o subject_n four_o a_o rule_n that_o have_v authority_n over_o all_o other_o rule_n and_o none_o over_o it_o must_v inevitable_o be_v the_o principal_a and_o supreme_a rule_n but_o the_o scripture_n be_v such_o a_o rule_n ergo_fw-la they_o be_v the_o supreme_a principal_a rule_n i_o prove_v the_o minor_a the_o major_n need_v not_o because_o we_o may_v not_o receive_v any_o rule_n from_o without_o or_o dictat_fw-la within_o which_o agree_v not_o with_o the_o scripture_n as_o george_n keith_n seem_o also_o confess_v in_o his_o quakerism_n no_o popery_n receive_v a_o contrary_a rule_n on_o the_o other_o hand_n we_o may_v nay_o we_o be_v bind_v to_o receive_v the_o scripture-doctrine_n though_o it_o do_v not_o agree_v with_o the_o dictate_v within_o or_o any_o other_o pretend_a rule_n as_o be_v clear_a from_o many_o thing_n aforesaid_a and_o the_o quaker_n will_v not_o deny_v sure_a these_o thing_n hold_v firm_a again_o it_o do_v not_o hold_v that_o we_o must_v not_o receive_v the_o scripture_n if_o they_o agree_v not_o with_o the_o dictat_fw-la within_o but_o may_v receive_v the_o dictat_fw-la within_o though_o it_o disagree_v with_o the_o scripture_n and_o so_o the_o scripture_n have_v authority_n over_o all_o other_o rule_n and_o none_o else_o have_v authority_n over_o they_o now_o albeit_o we_o have_v sufficient_o already_o affront_v the_o dictate_v within_o yet_o
grant_v all_o this_o to_o be_v most_o true_a yet_o the_o knot_n be_v not_o untie_v for_o how_o shall_v i_o know_v and_o discern_v a_o imposture_n of_o the_o devil_n meet_v with_o my_o deceitful_a heart_n from_o the_o dictate_v of_o the_o spirit_n without_o some_o rule_n to_o try_v it_o by_o thou_o will_v answer_v that_o the_o dictate_v of_o the_o spirit_n have_v a_o self-evidence_n in_o themselves_o to_o assure_v that_o they_o be_v his_o dictate_v and_o hereby_o they_o shall_v be_v know_v but_o first_o the_o spirit_n do_v not_o now_o adays_o inlighten_v we_o in_o that_o measure_n as_o to_o make_v we_o immediate_o inspire_a and_o infallible_a see_v george_n keith_n himself_o may_v possible_o both_o speak_v and_o write_v and_o so_o think_v too_o in_o a_o mixture_n for_o all_o his_o spirit_n second_o all_o man_n have_v not_o the_o spirit_n to_o direct_v they_o infallible_o though_o he_o do_v do_v it_o to_o they_o that_o have_v he_o by_o a_o immediate_a dictate_v three_o let_v the_o dictate_v within_o have_v a_o self-evidence_n unto_o he_o to_o who_o it_o be_v actual_o present_v yet_o the_o devil_n a_o cunning_a serpent_n and_o subtle_a sophister_n and_o a_o great_a pretend_a saint_n too_o when_o he_o transform_v himself_o into_o a_o angel_n of_o light_n can_v present_v a_o imposture_n unto_o another_o man_n that_o want_v that_o dictate_v or_o to_o he_o that_o have_v it_o at_o another_o time_n but_o now_o he_o at_o the_o time_n present_v actual_o have_v not_o that_o dictate_v with_o so_o much_o seem_a evidence_n as_o with_o the_o concurrence_n of_o a_o by_o the_o scripture_n cite_v and_o by_o the_o context_n of_o the_o place_n object_v that_o moses_n strait_o tie_v they_o to_o the_o scripture-rule_n and_o so_o he_o can_v mean_v in_o the_o text_n object_v to_o absolve_v they_o from_o it_o or_o send_v they_o to_o the_o light_n within_o as_o the_o rule_n therefore_o they_o can_v gain_v their_o point_n here_o second_o moses_n mean_v as_o paul_n expound_v he_o rom._n 10.6_o 7_o 8_o 9_o compare_v with_o vers_n 5._o of_o the_o easiness_n of_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n which_o both_o in_o themselves_o be_v more_o hard_a and_o difficult_a and_o also_o want_v that_o promise_n and_o efficacy_n of_o the_o spirit_n which_o be_v join_v with_o the_o covenant_n of_o grace_n to_o make_v it_o effectual_a in_o which_o sense_n it_o can_v make_v nothing_o at_o all_o for_o the_o quaker_n three_o i_o grant_v that_o this_o text_n further_o import_v that_o people_n as_o a_o thing_n requisite_a see_v the_o instrument_n of_o any_o work_n be_v requisite_a to_o the_o work_n till_o it_o be_v finish_v therefore_o four_o we_o say_v that_o the_o prophet_n be_v there_o compare_v the_o new_a dispensation_n of_o the_o covenant_n under_o the_o gospel_n
they_o object_n that_o christ_n promise_v to_o send_v his_o spirit_n to_o guide_v we_o into_o all_o truth_n joh._n 16.13_o therefore_o there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o external_n rule_n and_o ordinance_n to_o guide_v we_o yea_o in_o their_o confession_n where_o they_o propound_v this_o objection_n they_o contend_v that_o all_o external_n ordinance_n ought_v to_o be_v reject_v because_o of_o this_o promise_n of_o the_o spirit_n see_v their_o confession_n page_n 73_o 74_o 75_o 76_o 77_o 78_o 79_o 80_o 81_o 82._o where_o they_o so_o triumph_v in_o this_o argument_n as_o if_o now_o they_o have_v incontrollable_o gain_v the_o day_n and_o for_o ever_o banish_v all_o external_n ordinance_n out_o of_o the_o church_n and_o have_v no_o more_o to_o do_v but_o sing_v te_fw-la deum_fw-la victory_n we_o have_v win_v but_o he_o that_o reckon_v without_o his_o host_n may_v come_v to_o reckon_v twice_o therefore_o i_o answer_v first_o that_o this_o promise_n be_v only_o make_v to_o believer_n this_o text_n they_o can_v never_o prove_v their_o point_n three_o i_o prove_v at_o the_o survey_n of_o their_o three_o query_n above_o and_o in_o my_o answer_n to_o their_o second_o objection_n here_o that_o the_o write_a word_n of_o god_n be_v a_o organ_n and_o instrument_n whereby_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n work_v upon_o our_o heart_n enlighten_v convert_v renow_v and_o quicken_a we_o thereby_o and_o so_o the_o spirit_n be_v not_o here_o promise_v to_o guide_v we_o without_o the_o write_a word_n but_o with_o it_o last_o we_o have_v the_o word_n of_o that_o same_o spirit_n for_o it_o and_o that_o since_o he_o be_v pour_v out_o in_o the_o large_a measure_n that_o it_o be_v not_o he_o but_o a_o spirit_n of_o error_n that_o lead_v man_n when_o they_o harken_v not_o to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o apostle_n which_o be_v write_v in_o the_o scripture_n 1_o joh._n 4.6_o he_o exhort_v we_o to_o take_v heed_n to_o the_o scripture_n 2_o pet._n 1.19_o 20._o he_o affirm_v the_o 22.19_o he_o pronounce_v they_o bless_v that_o read_v hear_v and_o keep_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o scripture_n rev._n 22.7_o and_o 1.3_o whoever_o then_o reject_v the_o scripture-rule_n he_o intend_v not_o to_o learn_v or_o have_v hope_n or_o profit_v any_o more_o in_o the_o way_n of_o righteousness_n or_o be_v bless_v but_o to_o have_v his_o part_n take_v out_o of_o the_o book_n of_o life_n will_v not_o that_o man_n be_v a_o good_a christian_a and_o a_o happy_a saint_n no_o doubt_n christ_n then_o mean_v nothing_o less_o than_o to_o absolve_v we_o from_o the_o external_n rule_n of_o scripture_n in_o this_o text_n of_o john_n which_o the_o quaker_n here_o wrest_v to_o that_o purpose_n vaunt_v themselves_o of_o a_o abortive_a victory_n which_o shall_v never_o see_v the_o sun_n like_v so_o many_o windy_a bravadilloe_n et_fw-la preterea_fw-la nihil_fw-la five_o they_o object_n from_o the_o first_o epistle_n of_o john_n 2.20_o 27._o where_o saint_n john_n say_v but_o you_o have_v a_o unction_n from_o the_o holy_a one_o and_o you_o know_v all_o thing_n and_o the_o anoint_v which_o you_o have_v receive_v abide_v in_o you_o and_o you_o need_v not_o that_o any_o man_n teach_v you_o therefore_o there_o be_v no_o need_n of_o external_n rule_n and_o teach_v see_v there_o be_v a_o unction_n within_o that_o teach_v all_o thing_n answ_n first_o the_o apostle_n do_v not_o say_v that_o all_o man_n whatsoever_o have_v that_o unction_n to_o teach_v they_o but_o only_o such_o as_o he_o write_v to_o viz._n believer_n and_o so_o this_o text_n will_v not_o serve_v their_o turn_n for_o all_o man_n second_o he_o do_v not_o say_v that_o that_o anoint_v teach_v without_o the_o external_n write_v word_n yea_o in_o this_o same_o epistle_n ch._n 4.6_o ch._n 5.13_o he_o plain_o show_v the_o contrary_a where_o he_o affirm_v that_o those_o that_o be_v of_o god_n hearken_v to_o and_o so_o be_v teach_v by_o for_o there_o be_v no_o other_o end_n of_o their_o harken_v but_o to_o be_v teach_v their_o external_n doctrine_n which_o be_v write_v in_o the_o scripture_n and_o that_o he_o write_v this_o same_o epistle_n of_o purpose_n to_o be_v a_o instrument_n of_o faith_n and_o knowledge_n unto_o they_o and_o will_v they_o then_o force_v a_o argument_n from_o this_o epistle_n against_o scripture-rule_n nay_o there_o be_v in_o this_o epistle_n evident_a demonstration_n establish_v it_o three_o we_o have_v before_o show_v that_o the_o spirit_n teach_v we_o by_o the_o external_n write_v word_n and_o the_o quaker_n with_o all_o their_o wrangling_n can_v never_o make_v it_o appear_v that_o he_o teach_v we_o without_o it_o for_o all_o the_o text_n which_o they_o produce_v or_o can_v produce_v prove_v no_o more_o but_o only_o that_o the_o spirit_n teach_v we_o which_o we_o never_o deny_v but_o hearty_o acknowledge_v but_o not_o one_o text_n in_o all_o the_o scripture_n can_v prove_v that_o the_o spirit_n teach_v we_o without_o the_o external_n word_n which_o be_v the_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d and_o yet_o the_o quaker_n by_o a_o new_a sort_n of_o logic_n invent_v by_o their_o alogical_a spirit_n for_o the_o abuse_n of_o mankind_n do_v
