speaker_n that_o they_o offend_v at_o but_o prejudices_fw-la against_o the_o carrier_n of_o the_o word_n have_v never_o do_v good_a but_o much_o ill_n and_o you_o will_v guard_v against_o they_o 2._o sometime_o there_o be_v a_o stumble_n at_o the_o spiritual_a truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o a_o sort_n of_o new-fangleness_a in_o the_o hearer_n of_o it_o that_o last_v not_o john_n hearer_n rejoice_v in_o his_o light_n for_o a_o season_n something_o of_o it_o also_o be_v in_o christ_n hearer_n but_o they_o soon_o turn_v the_o back_n on_o he_o when_o he_o tell_v they_o of_o eat_v his_o flesh_n and_o drink_v his_o blood_n and_o of_o the_o necessity_n of_o it_o else_o they_o can_v have_v no_o life_n in_o they_o this_o say_v they_o be_v a_o hard_a say_n and_o who_o can_v bear_v it_o if_o we_o will_v consider_v these_o thing_n we_o may_v see_v convince_a cause_n of_o our_o little_a thrive_a and_o they_o may_v also_o through_o god_n blessing_n be_v make_v use_n of_o for_o direction_n to_o thrive_a and_o if_o we_o can_v once_o bring_v you_o to_o be_v single_a and_o serious_a in_o hear_v and_o spiritual_o thrifty_a in_o make_v use_n of_o every_o sermon_n and_o sabbath_n for_o edification_n we_o have_v gain_v a_o great_a point_n of_o you_o sermon_n xi_o isaiah_n liii_o i_o who_o have_v believe_v our_o report_n and_o to_o who_o be_v the_o arm_n of_o the_o lord_n reveal_v if_o we_o will_v sober_o consider_v the_o frame_n of_o the_o most_o part_n of_o man_n and_o woman_n that_o live_v under_o the_o gospel_n it_o will_v be_v hard_a to_o know_v whether_o it_o be_v more_o strange_a that_o so_o few_o shall_v receive_v the_o report_n and_o be_v bring_v to_o believe_v for_o all_o that_o can_v be_v say_v of_o jesus_n christ_n or_o whether_o that_o among_o the_o generality_n of_o hearer_n that_o do_v not_o receive_v the_o report_n there_o be_v so_o few_o that_o will_v let_v it_o light_v but_o that_o they_o believe_v it_o be_v wonderful_a and_o strange_a to_o see_v unbelief_n so_o rife_o and_o it_o be_v as_o strange_a and_o wonderful_a that_o among_o these_o many_o unbeliever_n there_o be_v so_o few_o that_o think_v they_o want_v faith_n you_o remember_v the_o last_o day_n we_o propose_v to_o answer_v this_o doubt_n or_o question_n what_o can_v be_v the_o reason_n that_o when_o so_o few_o believe_v all_o almost_o think_v they_o believe_v and_o then_o to_o speak_v a_o word_n to_o the_o last_o use_n that_o rise_v from_o the_o matter_n that_o former_o we_o have_v handle_v on_o these_o word_n we_o show_v you_o and_o we_o think_v the_o scripture_n be_v very_o clear_a for_o it_o that_o among_o the_o generality_n that_o hear_v the_o gospel_n they_o be_v very_o rare_a and_o thin_a sawen_v that_o do_v believe_v it_o and_o yet_o go_v through_o they_o all_o there_o will_v not_o one_o among_o many_o be_v find_v but_o will_v assert_v they_o believe_v and_o they_o will_v to_o speak_v so_o be_v crabbed_a and_o picqued_a to_o tell_v they_o that_o they_o want_v faith_n and_o so_o the_o most_o part_n of_o hearer_n live_v and_o die_v in_o this_o delusion_n a_o thing_n that_o experience_n clear_v as_o well_o as_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o a_o thing_n that_o doleful_a experience_n will_v clear_v at_o the_o great_a day_n therefore_o some_o be_v bring_v in_o say_v luk_n 13.26_o we_o have_v eat_v and_o drunken_a in_o thy_o presence_n and_o thou_o have_v teach_v in_o our_o street_n to_o who_o christ_n will_v say_v i_o know_v you_o not_o depart_v fâ—om_v i_o which_o do_v import_v this_o much_o that_o some_o will_v come_v as_o it_o be_v to_o the_o very_a gate_n of_o heaven_n have_v no_o doubt_n of_o their_o faith_n and_o interest_n in_o god_n or_o of_o their_o entry_n into_o it_o and_o will_v therefore_o in_o a_o manner_n plead_v with_o christ_n to_o be_v in_o and_o who_o will_v never_o once_o doubt_v of_o it_o nor_o put_v it_o in_o question_n but_o they_o be_v believer_n and_o in_o friendship_n with_o he_o although_o there_o will_v be_v no_o such_o debate_n or_o dispute_v after_o death_n or_o at_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n yet_o it_o say_v this_o â—hat_n many_o hearer_n of_o the_o gospel_n have_v drunken_a in_o this_o opinion_n which_o go_v to_o death_n with_o they_o and_o no_o preach_v will_v beat_v they_o from_o it_o that_o they_o be_v believer_n and_o in_o gâ—oâ—â—erms_n with_o god_n till_o the_o intimation_n of_o the_o sentence_n of_o condemnation_n do_v it_o and_o the_o wrath_n and_o curse_n of_o god_n meet_v they_o in_o the_o face_n and_o o_o how_o terrible_a a_o disappointment_n will_v such_o meet_v with_o in_o that_o day_n may_v it_o not_o then_o very_o reasonable_o and_o just_o be_v inquire_v what_o can_v be_v the_o reason_n â—nd_v cause_n when_o this_o be_v grant_v so_o general_o to_o be_v a_o take_v on_o a_o fair_a outward_a profession_n of_o religion_n and_o never_o look_v what_o be_v within_o it_o or_o how_o it_o be_v line_v to_o speak_v so_o what_o wonder_v she_o go_v up_o and_o down_o with_o the_o lamp_n in_o her_o hand_n and_o never_o know_v whether_o there_o be_v oil_n in_o her_o vessel_n or_o not_o since_o she_o never_o consider_v nor_o put_v the_o matter_n to_o proof_n and_o trial_n the_o people_n be_v expostulate_v with_o isai_n 44._o from_o ver_fw-la 9_o for_o make_v of_o image_n that_o a_o man_n shall_v cut_v down_o a_o tree_n and_o with_o one_o piece_n of_o it_o will_v think_v your_o faith_n as_o great_a a_o folly_n when_o there_o shall_v be_v as_o clear_a evidence_n to_o prove_v the_o rottenness_n of_o your_o faith_n and_o hope_n as_o there_o be_v even_o to_o common_a sense_n to_o prove_v the_o image_n make_v of_o a_o piece_n tree_n not_o to_o be_v god_n when_o it_o shall_v be_v find_v and_o declare_v that_o though_o you_o be_v never_o convince_v of_o sin_n nor_o of_o your_o misery_n and_o lose_a condition_n be_v never_o humble_v nor_o touch_v under_o the_o kindly_a sense_n of_o it_o never_o flee_v to_o jesus_n christ_n in_o earnest_n nor_o never_o profession_n they_o may_v make_v that_o they_o believe_v the_o truth_n of_o it_o yet_o in_o their_o deed_n they_o deny_v it_o for_o if_o there_o be_v a_o fixedness_n in_o the_o doctrinal_a faith_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o man_n they_o dare_v not_o for_o their_o soul_n live_v as_o they_o do_v neither_o yet_o second_o do_v we_o say_v that_o all_o they_o that_o have_v this_o doctrinal_a faith_n of_o the_o gospel_n or_o somewhat_o of_o it_o do_v believe_v every_o passage_n in_o it_o alike_o but_o often_o as_o they_o please_v they_o they_o believe_v they_o hence_o many_o believe_v what_o the_o word_n speak_v of_o mercy_n and_o of_o pardon_n of_o sin_n and_o will_v not_o question_v that_o but_o what_o it_o speak_v of_o holiness_n and_o of_o the_o severity_n of_o god_n reckon_n with_o man_n for_o sin_n they_o do_v not_o so_o credit_v that_o part_n of_o the_o word_n it_o be_v true_a where_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o one_o be_v the_o faith_n of_o the_o other_o will_v some_o way_n be_v but_o because_o the_o one_o agree_v better_a with_o their_o corruption_n than_o the_o other_o therefore_o the_o one_o be_v not_o so_o so_o receive_v as_o the_o other_o and_o it_o be_v very_o frequent_a to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o believe_v what_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o it_o because_o the_o word_n itself_o say_v it_o be_v so_o and_o the_o reason_n of_o this_o be_v 1._o because_o there_o be_v nothing_o that_o be_v not_o save_v but_o a_o natural_a man_n may_v hâ—ve_v it_o now_o this_o doctrinal_a faith_n be_v not_o save_v and_o so_o a_o natural_a man_n may_v have_v it_o yea_o the_o devil_n believe_v and_o tremble_v and_o james_n do_v not_o dispute_v with_o these_o to_o who_o he_o write_v on_o this_o account_n that_o they_o believe_v not_o thus_o but_o tell_v they_o that_o historical_a faith_n be_v not_o enough_o and_o we_o think_v a_o man_n in_o nature_n may_v have_v a_o great_a persuasion_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o that_o what_o it_o say_v will_v come_v to_o pass_v and_o yet_o still_o continue_v but_o a_o natural_a man._n a_o second_o reason_n be_v because_o the_o scripture_n speak_v so_o often_o of_o many_o sort_n of_o faith_n that_o be_v not_o save_v as_o exod._n 14._o at_o the_o close_a it_o be_v say_v the_o people_n believe_v the_o lord_n and_o psal_n 106.12_o than_o they_o believe_v his_o word_n and_o sing_v his_o praise_n and_o john_n 2.23_o many_o believe_v on_o christ_n to_o who_o he_o do_v not_o commit_v himself_o there_o be_v faith_n in_o they_o which_o his_o sign_n and_o miracle_n extort_a from_o they_o which_o be_v not_o save_v and_o matth._n 13._o two_o or_o three_o such_o act_n of_o faith_n be_v speak_v of_o in_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o sour_a that_o be_v not_o save_v however_o sound_v they_o may_v be_v in_o their_o own_o kind_n and_o 1_o cor._n 13._o we_o have_v such_o a_o faith_n speak_v of_o as_o a_o man_n dare_v not_o deny_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o word_n though_o he_o shall_v bring_v his_o body_n to_o be_v burn_v by_o his_o avouch_v of_o the_o same_o a_o three_o reason_n be_v because_o as_o much_o credit_n may_v be_v give_v to_o the_o word_n as_o be_v give_v to_o any_o other_o history_n there_o may_v be_v impression_n on_o the_o conscience_n of_o hearer_n that_o this_o be_v god_n word_n back_v with_o some_o common_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o that_o it_o be_v general_o receive_v to_o be_v the_o word_n of_o god_n in_o the_o part_n of_o the_o world_n we_o live_v in_o what_o wonder_n be_v it_o that_o folk_n believe_v thus_o and_o drink_v in_o this_o historical_a or_o doctrinal_a faith_n of_o the_o word_n so_o as_o they_o may_v even_o dare_v to_o suffer_v to_o death_n for_o it_o and_o yet_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n they_o may_v want_v save_v faith_n the_o devil_n be_v as_o sure_a as_o any_o natural_a man_n be_v that_o god_n be_v true_a and_o that_o his_o word_n will_v be_v perform_v and_o therefore_o they_o say_v to_o christ_n be_v thou_o come_v to_o torment_v we_o before_o the_o time_n the_o pang_n of_o a_o natural_a conscience_n in_o man_n will_v assure_v they_o of_o a_o judgement_n come_v though_o they_o tremble_v to_o think_v on_o it_o and_o therefore_o in_o the_o face_n but_o as_o serious_o and_o sincere_o you_o make_v it_o your_o business_n to_o be_v find_v in_o his_o righteousness_n so_o much_o clear_v and_o commend_v to_o you_o and_o in_o the_o study_n of_o holiness_n in_o all_o manner_n of_o conversation_n so_o powerful_o press_v upon_o you_o here_o that_o these_o sweet_a and_o savoury_a gospel-sermon_n may_v come_v to_o you_o all_o and_o more_o particulary_a to_o you_o my_o dear_a friend_n at_o glasgow_n 20.32_o rom._n 15.29_o act._n 20.32_o with_o the_o fullness_n of_o the_o blessing_n of_o the_o gospel_n even_o of_o the_o word_n what_o be_v in_o the_o four_o evangelist_n we_o will_v see_v it_o so_o full_o and_o often_o so_o literal_o make_v out_o of_o christ_n that_o if_o any_o will_v but_o read_v this_o chapter_n and_o compare_v it_o with_o they_o they_o will_v find_v the_o evangelist_n to_o be_v commentator_n on_o it_o and_o set_v it_o out_o more_o full_o 2._o that_o there_o be_v no_o scripture_n in_o the_o old_a testament_n so_o often_o and_o so_o convince_o apply_v to_o christ_n as_o this_o be_v there_o be_v scarce_o one_o verse_n at_o least_o not_o many_o but_o be_v by_o the_o evangelist_n or_o apostle_n make_v use_v of_o for_o hold_v out_o of_o christ_n if_o we_o look_v then_o to_o the_o sum_n of_o the_o word_n of_o this_o chapter_n they_o take_v in_o the_o sum_n and_o substance_n of_o the_o gospel_n for_o they_o take_v in_o these_o two_o 1._o the_o right_a description_n and_o manifestation_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o 2._o the_o unfolding_a and_o open_v up_o of_o the_o covenant_n of_o he_o be_v lift_v up_o from_o both_o and_o for_o as_o despicable_a as_o he_o be_v in_o man_n eye_n yet_o he_o be_v not_o so_o in_o himself_o for_o who_o shall_v declare_v his_o generation_n there_o be_v a_o wonderfulness_n in_o he_o who_o suffer_v that_o can_v be_v reach_v but_o must_v be_v leave_v with_o admiration_n and_o a_o wondered_a glory_n whereunto_o he_o be_v after_o his_o humiliation_n exalt_v and_o there_o be_v a_o reason_n of_o this_o give_v for_o prevent_v of_o offence_n if_o any_o shall_v say_v how_o then_o can_v he_o suffer_v and_o be_v bring_v so_o low_a in_o suffer_v if_o he_o be_v so_o glorious_a a_o person_n he_o answer_v it_o be_v true_a that_o he_o be_v cut_v off_o out_o of_o the_o land_n of_o the_o live_n but_o for_o no_o offence_n in_o himself_o but_o for_o the_o exaltation_n because_o in_o the_o low_a step_n of_o his_o humiliation_n he_o condescend_v to_o fulfil_v his_o engagement_n to_o the_o father_n in_o satisfy_v justice_n for_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o elect_n according_a to_o that_o of_o john_n 10.17_o therefore_o do_v my_o father_n love_v i_o because_o i_o lay_v down_o my_o life_n that_o i_o may_v take_v it_o again_o because_o according_a to_o his_o engagement_n he_o suffer_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o his_o elect_a people_n therefore_o he_o can_v not_o but_o have_v a_o comfortable_a and_o glorious_a outgate_n there_o be_v these_o three_o thing_n in_o the_o word_n 1._o somewhat_o assert_v concern_v christ_n jesus_n he_o be_v take_v from_o prison_n and_o from_o judgement_n 2._o something_o hint_v at_o which_o can_v be_v express_v who_o shall_v declare_v his_o generation_n 3._o there_o be_v a_o reason_n give_v in_o reference_n to_o both_o for_o he_o be_v cut_v off_o etc._n etc._n which_o we_o shall_v expound_v when_o we_o come_v to_o it_o for_o the_o first_o he_o be_v take_v from_o prison_n and_o from_o judgement_n we_o conceive_v these_o word_n look_v both_o to_o his_o humiliation_n and_o to_o his_o out-gate_n from_o it_o the_o one_o be_v clear_o suppose_v that_o he_o be_v in_o prison_n or_o strait_n and_o bring_v to_o judgement_n and_o the_o other_o be_v express_v that_o he_o be_v bring_v from_o prison_n and_o from_o judgement_n 1._o prison_n here_o may_v be_v take_v general_o for_o any_o strait_a pinch_n or_o pressour_n thaâ—_n one_o may_v be_v bring_v unto_o which_o we_o conceive_v both_o the_o word_n and_o the_o prophet_n scope_n will_v clear_v christ_n never_o have_v be_v proper_o in_o prison_n at_o least_o for_o any_o considerable_a time_n but_o straighten_a and_o pinch_v and_o he_o be_v take_v from_o that_o be_v in_o his_o humiliation_n and_o in_o his_o suffering_n in_o the_o room_n of_o the_o elect_a pursue_v by_o the_o law_n and_o justice_n of_o god_n 2._o judgement_n be_v take_v passive_o for_o judgement_n pass_v on_o he_o and_o it_o look_v not_o only_o to_o the_o procedure_n of_o pilate_n of_o the_o chief_a priest_n and_o of_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n but_o to_o a_o judicial_a process_n which_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n lead_v against_o he_o in_o which_o respect_n he_o answer_v as_o the_o word_n after_o will_v clear_v for_o the_o sin_n of_o god_n people_n 3._o the_o word_n he_o be_v eaken_v sometime_o signify_v to_o deliver_v as_o a_o captive_n be_v deliver_v when_o he_o be_v take_v from_o he_o that_o take_v he_o captive_n as_o it_o be_v isai_n 49.24_o shall_v the_o prey_n be_v take_v from_o the_o mighty_a or_o the_o lawful_a captive_n deliver_v to_o which_o the_o lord_n here_o answer_v it_o or_o he_o shall_v be_v take_v so_o then_o the_o scope_n and_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n be_v that_o the_o prophet_n subjoin_v a_o narration_n of_o christ_n exaltation_n upon_o the_o back_n of_o his_o humiliation_n as_o it_o be_v usual_a in_o the_o scripture_n to_o put_v judgement_n the_o very_a same_o which_o be_v in_o the_o follow_a expression_n he_o be_v cut_v off_o out_o of_o the_o land_n of_o the_o live_n that_o be_v the_o ordinary_a signification_n of_o the_o preposition_n from_o the_o meaning_n must_v be_v this_o that_o he_o be_v take_v out_o of_o the_o condition_n wherein_o he_o be_v it_o agree_v also_o best_o with_o the_o scope_n of_o the_o very_a next_o word_n who_o shall_v declare_v his_o generation_n wherein_o he_o propose_v a_o admirable_a aggravation_n of_o this_o delivery_n the_o second_o thing_n have_v a_o connexion_n with_o the_o former_a and_o therefore_o take_v a_o word_n or_o two_o for_o clear_v of_o it_o what_o to_o understand_v by_o generation_n here_o be_v somewhat_o difficult_a to_o determine_v the_o word_n in_o the_o original_a have_v several_a meaning_n yet_o general_o it_o look_v to_o one_o of_o two_o as_o it_o be_v apply_v to_o christ_n 1._o either_o to_o the_o time_n past_a and_o so_o it_o be_v use_v by_o many_o to_o express_v and_o hold_v forth_o christ_n godhead_n and_o so_o the_o meaning_n be_v though_o he_o be_v bring_v very_o low_a yet_o he_o be_v and_o be_v the_o eternal_a son_n of_o god_n or_o 2._o as_o common_o it_o be_v take_v it_o look_v to_o the_o time_n to_o come_v and_o so_o the_o meaning_n be_v who_o shall_v declare_v his_o duration_n or_o continuance_n generation_n be_v often_o take_v thus_o in_o scripture_n for_o the_o continuance_n of_o a_o age_n and_o of_o one_o age_n follow_v another_o successive_o as_o joshua_n 22._o this_o altar_n shall_v be_v a_o witness_n to_o the_o generation_n to_o come_v so_o then_o the_o meaning_n be_v he_o be_v once_o low_a but_o god_n exalt_v he_o and_o bring_v he_o through_o and_o who_o shall_v declare_v this_o duration_n or_o exaltation_n after_o which_o be_v as_o we_o say_v ordinary_a in_o scripture_n we_o conceive_v the_o meaning_n we_o have_v give_v be_v safe_a and_o agreeable_a to_o the_o prophet_n scope_n we_o may_v observe_v three_o thing_n from_o the_o first_o part_n of_o the_o word_n 1._o that_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n in_o his_o perform_v the_o work_n of_o redemption_n be_v exceed_o straighten_a or_o pinsh_v or_o hold_v in_o as_o the_o word_n be_v elsewhere_o render_v bind_v up_o and_o hem_v in_o as_o man_n be_v who_o be_v in_o prison_n and_o by_o these_o straitning_n we_o mean_v not_o only_o such_o as_o he_o be_v bring_v into_o by_o and_o before_o man_n whereof_o we_o speak_v before_o but_o especial_o these_o that_o be_v more_o inward_a and_o these_o be_v among_o the_o last_o step_n of_o and_o we_o shall_v instance_n several_a place_n of_o scripture_n that_o serve_v to_o hold_v they_o out_o the_o first_o be_v that_o of_o john_n 12.27_o 28._o now_o be_v my_o soul_n trouble_v and_o what_o shall_v i_o say_v father_n save_v i_o from_o this_o hour_n here_o our_o bless_a lord_n be_v trouble_v in_o spirit_n and_o so_o pinsh_v and_o hedge_v in_o as_o in_o a_o prison_n that_o he_o be_v holy_o non-plussed_n what_o to_o say_v the_o second_o scripture_n be_v matth._n 26.38_o my_o soul_n be_v exceed_o sorrowful_a even_o unto_o death_n which_o be_v like_o the_o expression_n use_v by_o and_o his_o sweat_n be_v as_o it_o be_v great_a drop_n of_o blood_n fall_v down_o to_o the_o ground_n there_o be_v such_o a_o strive_v wrestle_a and_o conflict_v not_o with_o man_n without_o he_o but_o with_o inward_a pressure_n on_o his_o spirit_n that_o he_o be_v like_o one_o in_o a_o barrace_n or_o cockpit_n or_o engage_v in_o a_o duel_n with_o a_o mighty_a combatant_n sore_o put_v to_o it_o very_o far_o beyond_o aught_o that_o we_o can_v conceive_v of_o so_o that_o he_o swat_o great_a drop_n of_o blood_n and_o say_v father_n if_o thou_o be_v willing_a remove_v this_o cup_n from_o clothe_v they_o be_v ungodly_a may_v come_v to_o he_o that_o he_o may_v justify_v they_o but_o alace_o people_n be_v for_o the_o most_o part_n senseless_a and_o regardless_o of_o their_o sin_n and_o misery_n and_o therefore_o he_o get_v no_o employment_n from_o they_o many_o sit_v very_o brave_a and_o fine_a here_o and_o have_v no_o legal_a bar_n on_o they_o to_o keep_v they_o from_o the_o depend_v though_o yet_o but_o very_o little_a and_o very_o ill_o understand_v there_o be_v many_o that_o can_v tell_v what_o it_o be_v though_o there_o be_v not_o many_o word_n more_o frequent_o mention_v in_o the_o scripture_n and_o though_o it_o be_v that_o whereby_o a_o person_n be_v translate_v from_o the_o state_n of_o enmity_n into_o the_o state_n of_o friendship_n with_o god_n as_o for_o this_o word_n to_o justify_v or_o justification_n then_o there_o be_v three_o sense_n give_v of_o it_o two_o whereof_z be_v erroneous_a and_o the_o last_o only_o be_v according_a to_o the_o something_o to_o please_v the_o mediator_n and_o wherein_o they_o come_v short_a they_o expect_v that_o he_o will_v make_v it_o up_o and_o this_o be_v very_o ordinary_a in_o practice_n if_o you_o ask_v some_o what_o hope_v have_v you_o of_o justification_n they_o will_v answer_v through_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o that_o be_v good_a in_o so_o far_o but_o ask_v they_o again_o how_o they_o will_v get_v it_o they_o will_v answer_v that_o they_o will_v do_v what_o they_o thou_fw-mi or_o may_v and_o they_o hope_v that_o he_o will_v pity_v they_o you_o will_v look_v in_o upon_o your_o own_o heart_n and_o see_v whether_o it_o be_v not_o secret_o make_v something_o of_o this_o kind_a the_o ground_n of_o your_o title_n to_o christ_n and_o of_o your_o justification_n and_o yet_o all_o this_o much_o have_v be_v speak_v of_o christ_n suffering_n and_o soul-travel_n 2._o he_o let_v we_o see_v what_o be_v the_o benefit_n that_o come_v to_o we_o by_o christ_n suffering_n and_o that_o be_v justification_n or_o absolution_n from_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n and_o from_o the_o curse_n which_o it_o deserve_v 3._o he_o let_v we_o see_v the_o way_n how_o this_o benefit_n be_v derive_v and_o it_o be_v by_o his_o knowledge_n this_o faith_n he_o shall_v be_v the_o great_a result_n of_o christ_n suffering_n many_o shall_v be_v justify_v and_o this_o shall_v be_v the_o way_n how_o it_o shall_v be_v derive_v to_o these_o many_o and_o that_o be_v by_o his_o knowledge_n or_o by_o faith_n in_o he_o rest_v on_o his_o righteousness_n and_o satisfaction_n we_o open_v up_o the_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n the_o last_o day_n and_o point_v at_o two_o doctrine_n from_o they_o 1._o that_o all_o man_n and_o woman_n have_v a_o judgement_n to_o abide_v before_o god_n a_o arraignment_n and_o indictment_n there_o to_o which_o they_o must_v answer_v they_o must_v all_o come_v to_o get_v a_o sentence_n from_o god_n 2._o that_o all_o man_n natural_o be_v liable_a to_o the_o sentence_n of_o condemnation_n this_o be_v suppose_v here_o for_o in_o as_o far_o as_o sinner_n be_v only_o by_o faith_n in_o christ_n justify_v in_o as_o far_o the_o sentence_n of_o the_o law_n and_o of_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n be_v stand_v against_o they_o and_o over_o their_o head_n who_o be_v not_o by_o faith_n unite_v to_o christ_n jesus_n and_o justify_v by_o his_o righteousness_n the_o 3._o doctrine_n which_o be_v almost_o the_o very_a word_n of_o the_o text_n that_o now_o we_o intend_v to_o speak_v to_o be_v this_o that_o although_o all_o man_n natural_o be_v obnoxious_a to_o the_o sentence_n of_o the_o law_n and_o to_o the_o curse_n of_o god_n yet_o there_o be_v a_o way_n lay_v down_o how_o a_o sinner_n so_o obnoxious_a may_v be_v justify_v and_o fir_v from_o that_o sentence_n and_o this_o be_v by_o faith_n in_o jesus_n christ_n only_o if_o any_o doctrine_n be_v of_o concernment_n for_o we_o to_o know_v and_o to_o be_v well_o and_o experimental_o acquaint_v with_o this_o be_v of_o concernment_n to_o we_o by_o his_o knowledge_n shall_v my_o righteous_a servant_n justify_v many_o there_o be_v three_o thing_n in_o this_o doctrine_n employ_v which_o by_o one_o and_o the_o same_o labour_n will_v be_v prove_v and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v put_v they_o together_o 1._o that_o although_o all_o man_n be_v natural_o obnoxious_a to_o the_o wrath_n and_o curse_n of_o god_n yet_o he_o have_v appoint_v away_o how_o guilty_a sinner_n may_v be_v justify_v and_o absolve_v 2._o that_o the_o way_n of_o attain_v to_o this_o benefit_n of_o justification_n and_o freedom_n from_o the_o curse_n be_v by_o faith_n in_o christ_n righteousness_n it_o be_v by_o his_o knowledge_n say_v the_o text._n 3_o that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n by_o which_o a_o sinner_n obnoxious_a to_o the_o curse_n can_v be_v justify_v but_o by_o faith_n in_o christ_n righteousness_n allanarly_a this_o last_o branch_n of_o the_o doctrine_n say_v not_o only_o that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o mean_a to_o satisfy_v justice_n but_o christ_n merit_n and_o satisfaction_n but_o that_o there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n but_o the_o way_n of_o faith_n to_o win_v to_o the_o application_n of_o his_o satisfaction_n whereby_o many_o question_n may_v be_v answer_v and_o many_o error_n in_o doctrine_n and_o practise_v confute_v but_o our_o
present_a purpose_n be_v to_o show_v how_o a_o guilty_a sinner_n may_v be_v justify_v and_o therefore_o we_o shall_v 1._o give_v you_o a_o general_a view_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o doctrine_n by_o confirm_v it_o from_o scripture_n in_o all_o the_o part_n of_o it_o 2._o we_o shall_v â—peak_v more_o paticular_o to_o the_o several_a branch_n of_o it_o and_o 3_o to_o the_o way_n of_o attain_v justification_n in_o the_o several_a cause_n of_o it_o as_o it_o be_v here_o hold_v forth_o for_o confirmation_n of_o the_o general_n doctrine_n you_o shall_v 1._o look_v upon_o some_o scripture_n and_o 2._o to_o some_o ground_n of_o reason_n as_o for_o the_o confirmation_n of_o it_o by_o scripture_n if_o we_o look_v through_o the_o gospel_n it_o be_v our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n his_o own_o doctrine_n which_o he_o preach_v and_o the_o way_n which_o he_o lay_v down_o therein_o for_o justify_v and_o save_v a_o sinner_n so_o john_n 3_o where_o it_o be_v three_o or_o four_o time_n repeat_v as_o v._o 16._o god_n so_o love_v the_o world_n that_o he_o give_v his_o only_a beget_v son_n that_o whosoever_o believe_v on_o he_o shall_v not_o perish_v but_o have_v eternal_a life_n v._n 18._o he_o that_o believe_v on_o he_o be_v not_o condemn_v but_o he_o that_o believe_v not_o be_v condemn_v already_o because_o he_o believe_v not_o in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o only_o beget_v son_n of_o god_n v._n 36._o he_o that_o believe_v on_o the_o son_n have_v everlasting_a life_n and_o he_o that_o believe_v not_o the_o son_n shall_v not_o see_v life_n but_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n abide_v on_o galatian_n where_o this_o question_n about_o justification_n be_v express_o and_o of_o purpose_n handle_v and_o we_o will_v find_v that_o it_o be_v the_o sum_n of_o both_o as_o rom._n 3._o where_o have_v say_v v._o 23_o that_o all_o have_v sin_v and_o come_v short_a of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o so_o that_o all_o be_v liable_a to_o god_n judgement_n he_o subjoin_v v._o 24._o be_v justify_v free_o by_o his_o grace_n through_o the_o redemption_n that_o be_v in_o jesus_n christ_n where_o be_v the_o great_a mean_a of_o our_o justification_n and_o then_o he_o add_v v._o 25._o who_o god_n have_v set_v forth_o to_o be_v a_o propitiation_n through_o faith_n in_o his_o blood_n where_o we_o have_v the_o mean_v of_o application_n to_o wit_n faith_n and_o chap._n 4.5_o to_o he_o that_o work_v not_o but_o believe_v on_o he_o that_o justifi_v the_o ungodly_a his_o faith_n be_v count_v for_o righteousness_n which_o place_n demonstrat_n this_o that_o a_o ungodly_a person_n take_v hold_n by_o faith_n of_o christ_n righteousness_n may_v be_v and_o be_v justify_v and_o absolve_v and_o fir_v from_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n as_o if_o he_o have_v never_o sin_v so_o gal._n 2.15_o 16._o we_o who_o be_v jew_n by_o nature_n and_o not_o sinner_n of_o the_o gentile_n or_o not_o without_o the_o covenant_n as_o they_o be_v know_v that_o a_o man_n be_v not_o justify_v by_o the_o work_n of_o justification_n and_o life_n to_o be_v have_v but_o it_o also_o exclude_v all_o other_o way_n of_o justification_n know_v that_o a_o man_n be_v not_o justify_v by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n but_o by_o faith_n but_o that_o which_o we_o be_v now_o speak_v to_o be_v only_o the_o positive_a part_n of_o the_o doctrine_n to_o show_v that_o a_o guilty_a sinner_n obnoxious_a to_o the_o curse_n may_v by_o faith_n come_v to_o be_v justify_v and_o make_v free_a from_o the_o gild_n of_o sin_n and_o from_o the_o curse_n as_o if_o he_o have_v never_o sin_v nor_o be_v under_o the_o curse_n for_o further_a confirmation_n of_o the_o doctrine_n you_o will_v consider_v these_o four_o ground_n and_o you_o will_v see_v from_o they_o good_a reason_n for_o it_o only_o remember_v this_o that_o justification_n look_v always_o to_o a_o judicial_a procedure_n as_o we_o hint_v before_o wherein_o the_o lord_n be_v as_o it_o be_v on_o the_o throne_n and_o the_o guilty_a sinner_n at_o the_o bar_n plead_v through_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o satisfaction_n to_o be_v absolve_v which_o be_v even_o as_o if_o a_o debtor_n be_v arrest_v for_o debt_n shall_v plead_v for_o a_o liberation_n not_o because_o he_o be_v not_o owe_v the_o debt_n neither_o because_o he_o have_v pay_v the_o debt_n but_o because_o his_o cautioner_n have_v pay_v it_o for_o he_o this_o be_v suppose_v and_o remember_v you_o will_v we_o say_v consider_v these_o ground_n or_o reason_n for_o confirm_v the_o doctrine_n 1._o the_o suffering_n that_o christ_n have_v endure_v and_o the_o satisfaction_n that_o he_o have_v make_v in_o the_o room_n of_o sinner_n as_o the_o next_o word_n hold_v out_o for_o he_o shall_v bear_v their_o iniquity_n and_o v._o ult_n he_o bear_v the_o sin_n of_o many_o nay_o this_o be_v the_o great_a scope_n of_o the_o chapter_n therefore_o it_o be_v say_v that_o he_o have_v bear_v our_o grief_n and_o carry_v our_o sorrow_n and_o that_o the_o lord_n have_v lay_v on_o he_o the_o iniquity_n of_o we_o all_o this_o make_v a_o ground_n of_o confirmation_n 2._o consider_v how_o that_o there_o be_v not_o only_o a_o sufficient_a price_n pay_v but_o there_o be_v a_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n warrand_a he_o to_o pay_v it_o and_o accept_v it_o off_o his_o hand_n as_o complete_a payment_n and_o satisfaction_n for_o the_o elect_v debt_n and_o except_o there_o be_v a_o look_n have_v to_o this_o covenant_n faith_n have_v not_o a_o sufficient_a ground_n to_o rest_v on_o for_o justification_n through_o jesus_n his_o satisfaction_n because_o otherways_o we_o see_v not_o a_o reason_n why_o his_o suffering_n can_v be_v accept_v for_o we_o for_o suppose_v if_o such_o a_o supposition_n may_v warrantable_o be_v make_v christ_n to_o have_v suffer_v yet_o it_o be_v free_a for_o god_n to_o have_v accept_v that_o as_o a_o satisfaction_n for_o our_o debt_n or_o not_o but_o the_o consideration_n of_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n remove_v that_o doubt_v and_o give_v faith_n a_o ground_n to_o lay_v hold_n on_o christ_n suffering_n as_o satisfactory_a to_o the_o justice_n of_o god_n because_o in_o the_o covenant_n of_o redemption_n it_o be_v so_o transact_v and_o agree_v upon_o betwixt_o god_n and_o the_o mediator_n therefore_o the_o apostle_n speak_v heb._n 10.8_o 9_o and_o forward_o from_o psal_n 40._o of_o this_o covenant_n show_v that_o when_o sacrifice_n and_o offering_n will_v not_o do_v the_o turn_n christ_n come_v in_o say_v lo_o i_o come_v in_o the_o volume_n of_o thy_o book_n it_o be_v write_v of_o i_o i_o delight_v to_o do_v thy_o
