who_o benefit_n bestow_v on_o they_o in_o baptism_n the_o name_n of_o the_o cross_n do_v represent_v the_o use_n then_o of_o the_o cross_n according_a to_o the_o canon_n be_v not_o as_o mr._n b._n will_v infer_v to_o signify_v a_o act_n of_o god_n towards_o we_o to_o confer_v any_o benefit_n on_o we_o or_o require_v any_o duty_n of_o we_o but_o to_o signify_v and_o represent_v our_o own_o act_n whereby_o we_o resolve_v promise_v and_o bind_v ourselves_o not_o to_o be_v ashamed_a of_o a_o crucify_a saviour_n or_o his_o benefit_n purchase_v by_o his_o cross_n and_o signify_v to_o we_o under_o that_o name_n in_o scripture_n and_o not_o only_o our_o church_n but_o all_o other_o christian_n from_o the_o apostle_n time_n have_v for_o this_o reason_n look_v on_o make_v the_o sign_n of_o the_o cross_n as_o a_o very_a fit_a instance_n and_o declaration_n of_o their_o glory_v in_o christ_n suffering_n and_o readiness_n to_o follow_v he_o in_o they_o which_o be_v a_o effectual_a dedication_n of_o ourselves_o to_o his_o service_n though_o we_o do_v not_o think_v it_o a_o fit_a external_n sign_n to_o signify_v god_n communicate_v to_o we_o the_o grace_n or_o benefit_n of_o the_o new_a covenant_n because_o that_o be_v a_o act_n of_o god_n ought_v only_o to_o be_v represent_v and_o convey_v to_o we_o by_o sign_n particular_o institute_v by_o he_o whereas_o our_o glory_v in_o his_o suffering_n and_o dedicate_a ourselves_o to_o follow_v he_o in_o they_o be_v act_n of_o we_o may_v lawful_o be_v signify_v by_o such_o sign_n as_o universal_a custom_n have_v make_v proper_a as_o will_v appear_v more_o at_o large_a in_o this_o discourse_n what_o i_o have_v say_v be_v sufficient_a to_o show_v that_o the_o cross_n be_v no_o represent_v sign_n in_o this_o sense_n ii_o two_o as_o to_o the_o second_o sort_n of_o represent_v sign_n which_o signify_v and_o discover_v to_o we_o god_n pleasure_n and_o command_n concern_v some_o duty_n set_v forth_o and_o represent_v by_o they_o which_o duty_n god_n will_v have_v we_o perform_v let_v i_o observe_v that_o the_o cross_n be_v no_o more_o a_o represent_v sign_n with_o we_o in_o this_o sense_n than_o the_o former_a since_o we_o do_v not_o use_v it_o to_o signify_v or_o declare_v god_n will_n to_o we_o that_o we_o shall_v perform_v any_o duty_n but_o only_o our_o own_o resolution_n and_o purpose_v to_o perform_v those_o duty_n that_o god_n himself_o have_v signify_v under_o the_o name_n of_o the_o cross_n in_o scripture_n and_o that_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v ashamed_a to_o confess_v he_o that_o be_v crucify_a on_o it_o this_o be_v manifest_a from_o the_o very_a word_n of_o our_o office_n in_o which_o the_o sign_n of_o the_o cross_n be_v use_v only_o as_o a_o token_n that_o hereafter_o the_o baptise_a person_n shall_v not_o be_v ashamed_a to_o confess_v the_o faith_n of_o christ_n crucify_a and_o manful_o to_o fight_v under_o his_o banner_n against_o sin_n the_o world_n and_o the_o devil_n and_o to_o continue_v christ_n faithful_a soldier_n and_o servant_n unto_o his_o life_n end_v this_o be_v the_o only_a use_n our_o church_n make_v of_o the_o sign_n of_o the_o cross_n and_o you_o see_v plain_o that_o it_o be_v here_o make_v only_o a_o token_n of_o our_o own_v a_o crucify_a saviour_n and_o a_o instance_n that_o we_o be_v not_o ashamed_a of_o his_o cross_n and_o suffering_n and_o indeed_o it_o be_v as_o plain_a a_o instance_n of_o our_o not_o be_v thus_o ashamed_a and_o of_o our_o resolution_n to_o follow_v he_o in_o take_v up_o our_o cross_n and_o engage_v in_o his_o warfare_n and_o service_n as_o giving_z a_o alm_n be_v a_o instance_n of_o charity_n but_o here_o be_v nothing_o of_o god_n declare_v or_o signify_v his_o will_n to_o we_o by_o this_o sign_n that_o we_o shall_v perform_v these_o duty_n or_o any_o intimation_n that_o we_o use_v it_o to_o this_o purpose_n and_o yet_o if_o we_o do_v use_v it_o it_o will_v not_o give_v it_o any_o thing_n of_o a_o sacramental_a nature_n much_o less_o make_v it_o a_o human_a sacrament_n for_o it_o be_v no_o peculiar_a much_o less_o principal_a use_n of_o sacrament_n to_o represent_v god_n pleasure_n to_o we_o that_o we_o shall_v perform_v certain_a duty_n since_o we_o find_v many_o sign_n use_v in_o scripture_n to_o this_o purpose_n that_o be_v no_o sacrament_n i_o shall_v content_v myself_o with_o two_o instance_n among_o many_o the_o first_o be_v that_o of_o the_o sabbath_n day_n ezek._n 20._o 12._o moreover_o i_o give_v they_o my_o sabbath_n to_o be_v a_o sign_n between_o i_o and_o they_o that_o they_o may_v as_o he_o do_v in_o the_o same_o place_n for_o omit_v this_o use_n in_o my_o account_n of_o sacrament_n since_o my_o design_n be_v only_o to_o mention_v those_o use_v that_o be_v peculiar_a to_o sacrament_n and_o it_o be_v manifest_a by_o his_o own_o confession_n that_o this_o be_v not_o so_o peculiar_a to_o they_o iii_o three_o the_o same_o must_v be_v say_v concern_v sign_n that_o represent_v and_o signify_v our_o desire_n purpose_n and_o resolution_n to_o accept_v the_o grace_n favour_n and_o privilege_n god_n have_v promise_v we_o and_o to_o perform_v the_o duty_n he_o have_v impose_v on_o we_o together_o with_o our_o gratitude_n and_o sense_n of_o his_o favour_n to_o represent_v in_o this_o sense_n be_v not_o peculiar_a to_o sacrament_n much_o less_o a_o principal_a use_n
