satisfy_v with_o a_o less_o degree_n of_o happiness_n than_o what_o religion_n set_v before_o we_o for_o he_o plain_o intimate_v that_o he_o will_v have_v the_o body_n suffer_v no_o kind_n of_o pain_n nor_o be_v deny_v any_o thing_n that_o be_v good_a and_o grateful_a to_o our_o sense_n that_o he_o will_v enjoy_v the_o pleasure_n of_o this_o life_n with_o as_o much_o freedom_n and_o as_o much_o pleasure_n and_o delight_n but_o how_o then_o come_v he_o to_o desire_v such_o a_o degree_n of_o happiness_n as_o be_v not_o to_o be_v have_v here_o below_o whence_o be_v it_o that_o he_o can_v content_v himself_o with_o the_o sensible_a pleasure_n of_o this_o life_n such_o as_o he_o find_v they_o for_o no_o bodily_a delight_n be_v pure_a and_o unallay_v uninterrupted_a and_o endless_a and_o if_o these_o be_v the_o only_a delight_n we_o be_v capable_a of_o how_o come_v it_o we_o be_v capable_a of_o wish_v for_o better_a if_o his_o desire_n be_v reasonable_a he_o have_v as_o much_o reason_n to_o desire_v and_o value_v the_o spiritual_a enjoyment_n of_o another_o life_n as_o to_o desire_v such_o joy_n as_o be_v endless_a for_o since_o nothing_o in_o this_o world_n can_v satisfy_v the_o world_n the_o violence_n of_o humane_a passion_n the_o unruliness_n of_o humour_n and_o the_o extravagancy_n of_o our_o appetite_n be_v so_o troublesome_a to_o the_o world_n and_o all_o kind_n of_o immorality_n be_v attend_v with_o such_o bad_a effect_n that_o there_o be_v none_o but_o wish_n that_o they_o be_v utter_o extirpate_v and_o the_o contrary_a virtue_n establish_v for_o who_o be_v there_o that_o will_v not_o glad_o dwell_v in_o safety_n and_o peaceable_o enjoy_v the_o fruit_n of_o his_o labour_n who_o will_v not_o live_v free_a from_o vexation_n and_o trouble_n and_o pass_v his_o life_n with_o as_o little_a disquiet_n and_o disturbance_n

invade_v the_o right_n of_o another_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o lose_v the_o advantage_n who_o reckon_v craft_n and_o dissimulation_n a_o necessary_a prudence_n and_o injustice_n and_o oppression_n lawful_a method_n of_o compass_v his_o aim_n inquire_v i_o say_v of_o this_o man_n who_o seem_v so_o little_a a_o friend_n to_o the_o slow-paced_a virtue_n of_o justice_n and_o integrity_n whether_o he_o will_v be_v content_a that_o all_o man_n shall_v make_v as_o little_a account_n of_o they_o as_o he_o do_v and_o whether_o he_o will_v be_v willing_a to_o live_v by_o a_o neighbour_n that_o make_v use_v of_o the_o same_o base_a art_n or_o choose_v rather_o to_o have_v deal_n with_o those_o that_o make_v conscience_n of_o their_o do_n and_o even_o this_o man_n i_o doubt_v not_o will_v then_o declare_v in_o favour_n of_o these_o sociable_a and_o good-natured_a virtue_n and_o wish_v with_o all_o his_o heart_n that_o every-body_n else_o will_v abhor_v the_o wickedness_n that_o he_o thrive_v by_o and_o at_o least_o for_o his_o own_o quiet_a and_o security_n desire_v that_o he_o may_v never_o meet_v with_o one_o that_o have_v more_o way_n to_o overreach_v than_o he_o be_v aware_a be_v in_o those_o frequent_a complaint_n of_o that_o little_a conscience_n and_o integrity_n they_o meet_v with_o and_o those_o sorrowful_a story_n they_o tell_v how_o much_o they_o have_v be_v overreach_v and_o cozen_v how_o much_o wrong_n have_v be_v do_v they_o and_o how_o many_o abuse_n and_o affront_n have_v be_v put_v upon_o they_o for_o there_o be_v no_o man_n that_o feel_v these_o thing_n but_o he_o feel_v the_o want_n of_o religion_n and_o when_o we_o complain_v of_o the_o vexation_n they_o give_v we_o we_o express_v a_o desire_n that_o the_o duty_n of_o religion_n be_v more_o universal_o practise_v there_o be_v indeed_o one_o part_n of_o religion_n that_o seem_v to_o be_v very_o little_a in_o the_o desire_n of_o man_n but_o the_o contrary_a to_o be_v most_o countenance_v and_o affect_v with_o the_o great_a passion_n and_o that_o consist_v general_o in_o the_o duty_n that_o have_v a_o respect_n to_o ourselves_o and_o of_o this_o nature_n chief_o be_v the_o virtue_n of_o temperance_n for_o because_o the_o intemperate_a man_n hurt_v nobody_o but_o himself_o few_o concern_v themselves_o to_o wish_v he_o be_v more_o sober_a and_o they_o who_o delight_n in_o this_o vice_n seem_v very_o desirous_a to_o propagate_v it_o but_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o altogether_o true_a that_o religion_n in_o this_o respect_n be_v not_o much_o rather_o wish_v for_o than_o the_o vice_n that_o be_v contrary_a to_o it_o for_o temperance_n have_v those_o excellency_n in_o it_o and_o be_v attend_v with_o those_o advantage_n as_o render_v it_o too_o amiable_a and_o desirable_a to_o be_v despise_v it_o keep_v we_o to_o such_o a_o measure_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v with_o which_o nature_n be_v content_v and_o since_o the_o only_a end_n of_o eat_v and_o drink_v be_v for_o the_o support_n of_o nature_n and_o the_o maintain_v the_o health_n and_o vigour_n of_o our_o body_n it_o must_v belong_v to_o nature_n to_o set_v its_o own_o bound_n and_o to_o tell_v we_o what_o be_v sufficient_a for_o these_o ends._n but_o when_o we_o transgress_v the_o bound_n of_o nature_n and_o eat_v and_o drink_v not_o only_o that_o we_o may_v live_v but_o that_o we_o may_v please_v a_o luxurious_a appetite_n instead_o of_o support_v nature_n we_o weaken_v and_o destroy_v it_o and_o make_v those_o very_a refreshment_n by_o which_o we_o be_v to_o live_v to_o be_v the_o occasion_n of_o disease_n and_o death_n such_o a_o use_n of_o meat_n and_o drink_v tire_n and_o overcharge_n nature_n so_o that_o it_o be_v never_o at_o rest_n till_o it_o some_o way_n or_o other_o get_v rid_v of_o its_o burden_n which_o if_o it_o can_v do_v the_o man_n languish_v and_o droop_v under_o the_o wasting_n of_o a_o unconquerable_a surfeit_n and_o these_o be_v such_o lathsome_a and_o mischievous_a consequence_n as_o oftentimes_o make_v the_o intemperate_a man_n as_o much_o pleasure_n as_o he_o take_v in_o his_o excess_n to_o abhor_v his_o debauch_n and_o to_o wish_v his_o companion_n be_v more_o sober_a and_o now_o if_o to_o fear_n god_n and_o keep_v his_o commandment_n be_v so_o agreeable_a to_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n if_o it_o be_v so_o desirable_a a_o thing_n to_o all_o sort_n of_o person_n to_o believe_v there_o be_v a_o be_v that_o deserve_v our_o firm_a trust_n and_o confidence_n our_o great_a love_n and_o reverence_n and_o to_o have_v faith_n and_o truth_n love_n and_o good-nature_n sincerity_n and_o justice_n maintain_v in_o a_o word_n if_o it_o be_v hard_a to_o find_v a_o man_n that_o do_v not_o at_o one_o time_n or_o other_o wish_n that_o all_o the_o virtue_n of_o religion_n be_v more_o in_o reputation_n who_o can_v think_v that_o that_o which_o be_v so_o desirable_a to_o all_o man_n have_v not_o a_o real_a foundation_n in_o our_o nature_n chap._n iu._n from_o the_o universal_a sense_n of_o mankind_n that_o there_o be_v a_o vast_a difference_n between_o virtue_n and_o vice_n it_o be_v not_o only_o a_o desirable_a thing_n to_o mankind_n that_o there_o that_o humane_a nature_n be_v so_o frame_v as_o to_o be_v no_o more_o dispose_v to_o virtue_n than_o to_o vice_n 2._o that_o the_o great_a disposition_n to_o virtue_n that_o be_v among_o man_n be_v owe_v to_o the_o law_n of_o civil_a state_n 1._o it_o suppose_v humane_a nature_n to_o be_v so_o frame_v as_o to_o be_v no_o more_o dispose_v to_o virtue_n than_o to_o vice_n this_o be_v very_o necessary_a for_o they_o to_o maintain_v who_o resolve_v the_o sense_n we_o have_v of_o the_o excellency_n of_o virtue_n into_o humane_a law_n but_o by_o assert_v this_o they_o first_o destroy_v and_o what_o be_v not_o can_v have_v no_o reason_n to_o determine_v the_o matter_n either_o way_n or_o to_o come_v to_o a_o resolution_n which_o ought_v to_o bear_v sway_n in_o we_o 2._o i_o come_v now_o to_o consider_v the_o second_o thing_n suppose_v in_o this_o principle_n viz._n that_o the_o great_a disposition_n to_o virtue_n that_o be_v among_o man_n be_v owe_v to_o the_o law_n of_o civil_a state_n now_o although_o it_o must_v be_v grant_v that_o humane_a law_n be_v a_o very_a great_a support_n to_o virtue_n yet_o it_o be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v true_a that_o they_o lay_v the_o we_o have_v in_o any_o extremity_n neither_o be_v this_o all_o for_o he_o who_o look_v upon_o himself_o to_o be_v under_o no_o obligation_n to_o religion_n must_v likewise_o believe_v that_o no_o man_n be_v under_o any_o obligation_n to_o love_n and_o respect_v he_o to_o repose_v any_o confidence_n in_o or_o to_o hold_v any_o correspondence_n or_o conversation_n with_o he_o for_o it_o be_v only_a religion_n by_o oblige_v we_o to_o be_v true_a and_o faithful_a just_a and_o honest_a kind_a and_o charitable_a do_v lay_v that_o foundation_n of_o respect_n and_o truth_n which_o be_v satisfactory_a to_o we_o 1._o that_o we_o content_v ourselves_o with_o such_o a_o use_n of_o bodily_a enjoyment_n as_o be_v not_o burdensome_a and_o uneasy_a to_o naturre_v for_o whenever_o we_o exceed_v in_o the_o use_n of_o those_o refreshment_n that_o our_o body_n need_v instead_o of_o support_v nature_n we_o weaken_v and_o destroy_v it_o so_o that_o he_o who_o blame_v religion_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o those_o restraint_n it_o lay_v upon_o we_o tell_v the_o world_n that_o he_o do_v not_o know_v what_o be_v good_a for_o he_o he_o cry_v out_o upon_o religion_n as_o a_o enemy_n to_o our_o body_n and_o will_v persuade_v we_o that_o be_v suffer_v we_o not_o to_o take_v the_o best_a care_n of_o our_o self_n we_o can_v to_o make_v our_o life_n cheerful_a and_o pleasant_a and_o make_v no_o answer_n to_o this_o but_o by_o instance_v in_o such_o a_o use_n of_o those_o thing_n that_o be_v grateful_a to_o our_o body_n as_o be_v real_o hurtful_a and_o mischievous_a to_o it_o the_o sum_n of_o all_o his_o complaint_n be_v this_o that_o it_o suffer_v he_o not_o to_o eat_v and_o drink_v to_o excess_n or_o to_o let_v his_o appetite_n grow_v so_o extravagant_a that_o nothing_o can_v satisfy_v they_o that_o it_o suffer_v he_o not_o to_o over-charge_n nature_n and_o thereby_o to_o load_v his_o body_n with_o loathe_n and_o disease_n and_o what_o be_v this_o but_o the_o complaint_n of_o a_o fool_n who_o neither_o know_v how_o to_o choose_v well_o for_o himself_o nor_o be_v capable_a of_o be_v instruct_v 2._o with_o such_o a_o use_n as_o do_v not_o suppose_v the_o thing_n we_o now_o need_v to_o be_v in_o their_o own_o nature_n satisfactory_a i_o do_v not_o suppose_v that_o we_o be_v miftaken_v when_o we_o account_v the_o creature_n that_o god_n have_v make_v for_o oour_fw-mi support_v and_o comfort_n to_o be_v good_a for_o we_o and_o those_o earthly_a delight_n that_o our_o sense_n affect_v to_o be_v design_v as_o entertainment_n to_o we_o while_o we_o be_v in_o the_o flesh_n nor_o do_v religion_n blemish_v they_o as_o if_o they_o be_v not_o but_o we_o certain_o mistake_v in_o the_o use_n of_o they_o when_o we_o pursue_v they_o with_o that_o eagerness_n as_o if_o we_o can_v never_o have_v enough_o of_o they_o for_o by_o such_o a_o enlargement_n of_o our_o desire_n we_o real_o discredit_v they_o and_o do_v as_o good_a as_o tell_v the_o world_n that_o in_o the_o enjoyment_n we_o find_v nothing_o of_o that_o good_a in_o they_o that_o we_o expect_v and_o beside_o by_o such_o a_o excessive_a appetite_n after_o and_o pursuit_n of_o they_o we_o do_v that_o injury_n to_o our_o sense_n as_o render_v they_o less_o capable_a of_o taste_v the_o sweet_a that_o be_v in_o they_o for_o consider_v the_o man_n who_o mind_n be_v whole_o bend_v upon_o heap_v up_o riches_n or_o who_o give_v himself_o up_o to_o a_o voluptuous_a sensual_a way_n of_o live_v and_o you_o will_v find_v that_o he_o enjoy_v less_o of_o that_o good_a that_o be_v in_o earthly_a possession_n and_o bodily_a pleasure_n than_o he_o who_o take_v care_n to_o moderate_v his_o appetite_n for_o whereas_o he_o who_o take_v this_o way_n to_o satisfy_v his_o desire_n do_v real_o taste_v all_o the_o good_a that_o be_v in_o enjoyment_n of_o this_o nature_n and_o do_v always_o maintain_v that_o liveliness_n and_o vigour_n in_o his_o sensitive_a appetite_n which_o be_v requisite_a to_o the_o true_a pleasure_n of_o the_o body_n he_o who_o be_v always_o trouble_v with_o worldly_a solicitude_n and_o let_v his_o desire_n outgo_v his_o enjoyment_n be_v not_o any_o time_n at_o leisure_n to_o taste_v the_o fruit_n of_o his_o labour_n he_o do_v not_o believe_v the_o satisfaction_n he_o look_v for_o be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o any_o thing_n he_o have_v but_o in_o something_o that_o he_o want_v and_o therefore_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o all_o that_o he_o enjoy_v he_o be_v full_a of_o want_n and_o dissatisfaction_n and_o whatever_o he_o acquire_v give_v he_o no_o be_v as_o to_o worldly_a delight_n the_o sensual_a man_n who_o believe_v that_o the_o only_a happiness_n of_o humane_a life_n do_v consist_v in_o bodily_a delight_n do_v taste_v the_o least_o of_o that_o pleasure_n that_o he_o magnisy_n so_o much_o for_o by_o go_v beyond_o that_o measure_n of_o enjoyment_n which_o be_v grateful_a to_o nature_n he_o waste_v his_o spirit_n tire_v nature_n dull_v his_o sense_n and_o render_v they_o unfit_a for_o any_o quick_a perception_n there_o be_v no_o bodily_a pleasure_n but_o by_o be_v too_o long_o enjoy_v do_v grow_v nauseous_a and_o make_v the_o appetite_n it_o shall_v gratify_v sick_a and_o uneasy_a so_o that_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o if_o we_o will_v enjoy_v the_o satisfaction_n that_o be_v in_o bodily_a delight_n if_o we_o will_v reap_v the_o benefit_n of_o our_o possession_n and_o feel_v the_o pleasure_n that_o be_v in_o sensual_a gratification_n we_o must_v moderate_v our_o appetite_n as_o religion_n require_v and_o stop_v there_o where_o nature_n do_v and_o now_o the_o folly_n of_o those_o that_o despise_v religion_n and_o except_v against_o those_o restraint_n it_o lay_v upon_o we_o do_v appear_v in_o this_o that_o they_o be_v so_o little_o acquaint_v with_o the_o nature_n of_o thing_n as_o to_o expect_v more_o from_o they_o than_o they_o can_v possible_o find_v in_o they_o they_o have_v not_o judgement_n enough_o to_o discern_v that_o they_o disappoint_v themselves_o of_o that_o pleasure_n they_o love_v and_o be_v so_o find_v of_o by_o suffer_v their_o appetite_n to_o crave_v beyond_o measure_n nor_o to_o apprehend_v that_o instead_o of_o refresh_v and_o maintain_v the_o health_n of_o their_o body_n their_o immoderate_a use_n of_o sensitive_a enjoyment_n do_v consume_v and_o destroy_v it_o and_o this_o folly_n they_o be_v so_o fond_a of_o that_o they_o will_v not_o hear_v of_o a_o remedy_n but_o quarrel_n with_o religion_n for_o endeavour_v to_o put_v they_o in_o a_o way_n to_o compass_v the_o end_n they_o aim_v at_o it_o be_v the_o health_n of_o the_o body_n and_o the_o prolong_v our_o life_n the_o pleasure_n and_o satisfaction_n of_o our_o sense_n that_o religion_n aim_v at_o when_o it_o forbid_v those_o excess_n of_o sensuality_n and_o voluptuousness_n which_o impair_a nature_n and_o destroy_v the_o vigour_n of_o man_n constitution_n and_o certain_o kill_v more_o than_o any_o judgement_n god_n do_v punish_v mankind_n with_o and_o prescribe_v those_o rule_n of_o temperance_n and_o moderation_n both_o in_o the_o use_n of_o our_o appetite_n and_o all_o the_o other_o refreshment_n that_o belong_v to_o our_o body_n by_o which_o the_o weak_a constitution_n be_v often_o enable_v to_o out_o last_v the_o strong_a and_o yet_o these_o man_n that_o love_v their_o body_n so_o tender_o be_v such_o fool_n as_o to_o blame_v religion_n for_o all_o this_o they_o will_v have_v health_n and_o a_o long_a life_n and_o be_v as_o free_v from_o pain_n and_o uneasiness_n as_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o man_n to_o be_v in_o such_o a_o life_n as_o this_o be_v and_o yet_o
they_o have_v not_o the_o wit_n to_o discern_v that_o they_o take_v a_o course_n that_o thwart_v their_o device_n when_o they_o neglect_v religion_n and_o that_o they_o be_v extreme_o behold_v to_o religion_n for_o give_v they_o those_o rule_n without_o which_o they_o can_v never_o long_o enjoy_v what_o they_o will_v have_v if_o it_o be_v a_o argument_n of_o folly_n not_o to_o know_v how_o to_o adapt_v mean_n suitable_a to_o the_o end_v we_o aim_v at_o the_o wicked_a irreligious_a man_n must_v pass_v for_o the_o very_a fool_n that_o be_v for_o live_v as_o he_o do_v when_o it_o be_v the_o welfare_n of_o his_o body_n that_o he_o pretend_v to_o aim_v at_o if_o he_o be_v wise_a in_o the_o choice_n of_o his_o end_n he_o can_v never_o avoid_v the_o imputation_n of_o folly_n for_o live_v
