prince_n only_o and_o since_o without_o commission_n and_o power_n from_o he_o they_o can_v not_o have_v have_v power_n in_o any_o thing_n outward_o to_o be_v exercise_v more_o than_o other_o ordinary_a subject_n how_o shall_v it_o therefore_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o by_o virtue_n of_o a_o deputation_n to_o serve_v and_o be_v subordinate_o assist_v unto_o he_o they_o can_v claim_v right_a and_o power_n to_o be_v unsubject_v and_o in_o any_o thing_n above_o he_o but_o we_o shall_v here_o somewhat_o examine_v the_o usual_a ground_n of_o this_o stubbornness_n which_o be_v by_o distinguish_v at_o their_o pleasure_n religious_a and_o civil_a duty_n one_o from_o another_o and_o then_o make_v man_n oblige_v to_o obedience_n in_o the_o first_o sort_n to_o god_n precept_n only_o with_o this_o far_a supposition_n that_o themselves_o or_o such_o be_v they_o fancy_n be_v to_o be_v obey_v as_o his_o magistrate_n therein_o and_o they_o then_o stint_v the_o prince_n power_n to_o be_v only_o exercise_v in_o what_o they_o refuse_v and_o shall_v call_v civil_a matter_n of_o which_o distinction_n of_o duty_n we_o shall_v speak_v more_o full_o anon_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n because_o the_o conceit_n of_o magistrate_n distinct_a and_o unsubordinate_a power_n have_v arisen_a from_o belief_n of_o this_o distinction_n of_o duty_n we_o be_v to_o consider_v in_o brief_a that_o be_v now_o christian_n we_o can_v at_o our_o private_a pleasure_n renounce_v and_o take_v off_o that_o general_a relation_n and_o say_v that_o in_o such_o and_o such_o particular_n we_o act_v as_o natural_a man_n in_o such_o as_o civil_a man_n and_o in_o such_o only_a as_o christian_n but_o since_o now_o all_o unrighteousness_n be_v sin_n 12.36_o and_o a_o sin_n against_o god_n too_o even_o to_o the_o degree_n of_o a_o idle_a word_n so_o have_v god_n unite_v the_o high_a trust_n and_o oversight_n of_o all_o these_o thing_n to_o this_o his_o only_a supreme_a magistrate_n and_o this_o in_o so_o near_o a_o tie_n of_o obedience_n as_o where_o he_o be_v not_o divide_v in_o himself_o that_o be_v to_o say_v difference_v from_o we_o in_o religion_n but_o be_v a_o christian_n as_o well_o as_o we_o there_o we_o can_v more_o divide_v from_o his_o authority_n in_o our_o christian_a obedience_n than_o we_o can_v in_o our_o civil_a without_o divide_v christ_n that_o give_v he_o this_o office_n and_o separate_v he_o likewise_o from_o his_o right_n of_o kingship_n over_o we_o and_o so_o affirm_v that_o we_o be_v to_o obey_v king_n as_o god_n deputy_n in_o the_o state_n but_o not_o as_o christ_n in_o the_o church_n for_o albeit_o in_o some_o assembly_n of_o christian_a subject_n where_o person_n in_o holy_a order_n do_v more_o particular_o appear_v and_o preside_v as_o be_v a_o assembly_n by_o the_o prince_n constitute_v for_o more_o near_a examination_n and_o state_v what_o in_o the_o scripture_n be_v more_o particular_o contain_v or_o what_o be_v more_o express_o tend_v to_o god_n worship_n and_o service_n prince_n may_v be_v think_v thereupon_o seclude_v yet_o since_o they_o be_v still_o christian_n subject_n as_o other_o and_o have_v as_o we_o say_v their_o whole_a assembly_n and_o their_o particular_a power_n therein_o authorize_v from_o the_o same_o head_n that_o other_o assembly_n have_v we_o may_v conclude_v that_o each_o kingdom_n be_v as_o well_o such_o a_o church_n as_o such_o a_o kingdom_n and_o as_o christ_n be_v head_n of_o the_o church_n and_o king_n of_o king_n too_o so_o be_v each_o king_n under_o he_o head_n of_o both_o also_o and_o while_o he_o continue_v a_o christian_a magistrate_n he_o must_v be_v always_o so_o obey_v and_o acknowledge_v and_o although_o where_o the_o prince_n or_o supreme_a magistrate_n be_v no_o christian_n as_o in_o the_o infancy_n of_o christianity_n it_o fare_v the_o say_n be_v useful_a of_o give_v to_o caesar_n the_o thing_n that_o be_v caesar_n and_o to_o god_n the_o thing_n that_o be_v god_n 5.29_o and_o of_o obey_v god_n rather_o than_o man_n because_o in_o that_o case_n the_o magistrate_n not_o undertake_v to_o be_v god_n or_o christ_n vicegerent_n at_o all_o so_o as_o to_o promote_v their_o honour_n and_o worship_n but_o it_o may_v be_v the_o contrary_a it_o be_v strange_a to_o give_v he_o the_o power_n of_o the_o church_n which_o he_o will_v not_o own_o but_o rather_o refuse_v therefore_o he_o refuse_v to_o act_v as_o a_o christian_a magistrate_n in_o matter_n of_o divine_a precept_n we_o must_v have_v recourse_n to_o god_n command_v ourselves_o or_o to_o such_o representation_n as_o any_o assembly_n of_o the_o church_n at_o that_o time_n can_v have_v but_o where_o the_o supreme_a magistrate_n be_v a_o christian_n there_o as_o in_o all_o his_o relation_n he_o be_v supreme_a to_o the_o rest_n of_o his_o subject_n so_o be_v he_o in_o all_o his_o command_n to_o be_v obey_v as_o a_o christian_a magistrate_n for_o if_o that_o rule_n of_o give_v to_o caesar_n god_n from_o meddle_v in_o secular_a affair_n or_o matter_n of_o the_o commonwealth_n do_v thereby_o not_o so_o much_o wrong_n to_o king_n as_o to_o god_n himself_o for_o since_o without_o a_o magistrate_n nothing_o can_v be_v do_v in_o the_o lawmaker_n absence_n all_o law_n of_o religion_n must_v then_o remain_v arbitrary_a and_o useless_a and_o god_n will_v by_o consequent_a be_v as_o well_o thrust_v out_o of_o religious_a power_n as_o direct_o hereby_o exclude_v out_o of_o the_o civil_a so_o that_o when_o that_o or_o the_o precept_n of_o obey_v god_n rather_o than_o man_n be_v to_o be_v take_v of_o direct_a use_n and_o force_n it_o must_v be_v when_o subject_n stand_v subject_v as_o aforesaid_a or_o else_o as_o we_o say_v in_o the_o case_n of_o new_a express_a command_n from_o god_n or_o christ_n himself_o receive_v who_o as_o the_o high_a power_n must_v then_o be_v obey_v as_o in_o that_o particular_a case_n wherein_o this_o sentence_n be_v speak_v may_v appear_v for_o christ_n have_v himself_o particular_o and_o express_o say_v to_o his_o apostle_n go_v teach_v all_o nation_n 9.16_o for_o they_o to_o have_v obey_v magistrate_n forbid_v they_o to_o teach_v any_o more_o in_o his_o name_n have_v be_v express_o to_o have_v obey_v man_n rather_o than_o god_n and_o to_o have_v put_v they_o in_o danger_n of_o woe_n if_o they_o preach_v not_o even_o as_o on_o the_o other_o side_n to_o hearken_v to_o such_o precept_n as_o come_v to_o be_v invent_v and_o press_v by_o private_a man_n contrary_a to_o the_o sense_n of_o god_n public_a minister_n and_o without_o express_a revelation_n therein_o from_o god_n which_o he_o be_v evident_o to_o prove_v be_v as_o do_v against_o god_n command_n to_o obey_v man_n rather_o than_o god_n also_o and_o this_o not_o only_o they_o have_v this_o their_o jurisdiction_n chap._n xii_o of_o the_o right_n of_o dominion_n have_v hitherto_o speak_v of_o the_o duty_n of_o subjection_n and_o particular_o to_o king_n it_o will_v far_o be_v necessary_a to_o say_v something_o in_o designation_n of_o the_o person_n that_o so_o the_o stubborn_a may_v be_v without_o excuse_n and_o the_o conscientious_a have_v direction_n and_o satisfaction_n as_o far_o as_o may_v be_v what_o to_o follow_v we_o must_v now_o again_o therefore_o consider_v that_o as_o man_n obligation_n of_o praise_n
from_o that_o of_o another_o be_v but_o because_o they_o do_v proportionable_o differ_v in_o their_o belief_n and_o judgement_n in_o matter_n of_o doctrine_n and_o discipline_n must_v it_o not_o then_o be_v presume_v that_o so_o far_o as_o the_o member_n of_o each_o christian_a church_n shall_v decline_v in_o their_o reverential_a regard_n towards_o their_o church_n soundness_n and_o veracity_n even_o so_o far_o will_v they_o conquent_o judge_v it_o fit_a to_o divide_v themselves_o by_o separate_a congregation_n or_o the_o like_a whereupon_o since_o a_o christian_a church_n and_o state_n be_v but_o the_o same_o as_o heretofore_o prove_v it_o will_v soon_o be_v find_v that_o this_o schism_n in_o the_o church_n will_v be_v the_o same_o with_o a_o revolt_n in_o the_o state_n and_o want_v but_o strength_n and_o opportunity_n to_o actuate_v its_o dislike_n into_o a_o rebellion_n for_o although_o they_o may_v at_o first_o for_o a_o countenance_n to_o their_o action_n and_o to_o draw_v in_o associate_n make_v use_n of_o that_o deceivable_a distinction_n of_o religious_a and_o civil_a affair_n and_o so_o pretend_v that_o they_o intend_v not_o at_o all_o to_o trench_v on_o the_o civil_a jurisdiction_n yet_o when_o by_o strength_n of_o ally_n and_o confederate_n they_o shall_v once_o have_v arrive_v at_o their_o desire_a degree_n of_o power_n it_o will_v then_o appear_v that_o they_o which_o at_o first_o do_v entreat_v to_o be_v independent_a in_o relation_n to_o the_o church_n will_v now_o practice_v to_o be_v so_o in_o reference_n to_o the_o state_n too_o and_o so_o by_o degree_n to_o be_v supereminent_a and_o command_v in_o both_o for_o must_v it_o not_o be_v expect_v that_o that_o thirst_n of_o ambition_n and_o rule_n by_o they_o call_v zeal_n and_o charity_n which_o first_o cause_v they_o to_o draw_v in_o sectator_n as_o the_o object_n and_o trophy_n of_o their_o glory_n and_o power_n shall_v ever_o stoop_v to_o any_o stint_n or_o moderation_n afterward_o whenas_o in_o order_n to_o spiritual_a thing_n and_o religious_a cognizance_n it_o be_v so_o easy_a a_o matter_n to_o draw_v in_o state_n affair_n also_o and_o then_o as_o christ_n immediate_a minister_n to_o preside_v in_o they_o without_o control_v and_o must_v it_o not_o then_o be_v expect_v that_o that_o great_a and_o high_a tie_n of_o terror_n and_o fear_n by_o which_o man_n be_v keep_v in_o obedience_n as_o in_o a_o religious_a subjection_n must_v also_o make_v they_o in_o case_n of_o difference_n with_o their_o civil_a head_n to_o seem_v regardless_o of_o terror_n from_o he_o as_o have_v but_o power_n over_o the_o body_n only_o and_o so_o consequent_o stick_v fast_o to_o the_o obedience_n of_o the_o other_o against_o he_o for_o if_o the_o separation_n be_v not_o at_o first_o make_v upon_o such_o ground_n as_o be_v hazardous_a of_o salvation_n why_o be_v it_o make_v and_o be_v make_v and_o continue_v how_o can_v it_o be_v expect_v they_o shall_v be_v think_v less_o so_o that_o when_o opportunity_n shall_v leave_v man_n at_o liberty_n which_o side_n to_o follow_v they_o will_v certain_o choose_v that_o which_o they_o acknowledge_v for_o right_a in_o the_o main_a although_o some_o have_v in_o these_o case_n step_v in_o with_o a_o apology_n and_o think_v toleration_n of_o dissent_n from_o the_o church_n allowable_a where_o a_o breach_n of_o charity_n be_v not_o present_o make_v by_o schism_n but_o the_o point_n in_o question_n be_v mere_o speculative_a yet_o will_v the_o example_n of_o the_o arrian_n and_o other_o of_o old_a and_o the_o remonstrant_n and_o other_o of_o late_a true_o satisfy_v we_o of_o the_o danger_n hereof_o and_o how_o by_o degree_n it_o will_v also_o arise_v to_o civil_a faction_n and_o commotion_n for_o in_o this_o case_n as_o former_o note_v the_o discontent_a preacher_n be_v to_o be_v look_v upon_o as_o fire_n and_o the_o people_n in_o their_o natural_a thirst_n to_o dislike_v and_o insubjection_n to_o be_v look_v upon_o as_o fuel_n and_o therefore_o although_o instance_n may_v be_v make_v and_o hope_n may_v be_v gather_v that_o these_o toleration_n have_v not_o arisen_a to_o a_o civil_a war_n yet_o can_v none_o make_v instance_n nor_o reasonable_o presume_v that_o public_a discontent_n shall_v not_o be_v hereby_o exasperate_v and_o increase_v even_o to_o a_o due_a height_n and_o fitness_n to_o break_v forth_o into_o open_a insurrection_n upon_o any_o fit_a opportunity_n for_o as_o in_o our_o body_n natural_a there_o be_v a_o amassment_n of_o corrupt_a humour_n and_o habit_n from_o intemperance_n and_o irregularity_n of_o diet_n exercise_n etc._n etc._n before_o some_o extraordinary_a cold_a or_o the_o like_o discover_v any_o thing_n in_o a_o fever_n or_o other_o formal_a disease_n even_o so_o they_o shall_v do_v well_o to_o consider_v that_o civil_a war_n and_o rebellion_n in_o state_n and_o kingdom_n be_v never_o to_o be_v fear_v to_o work_v to_o any_o strength_n or_o continuance_n where_o there_o be_v not_o a_o precedent_a amassment_n of_o discontent_n by_o which_o there_o may_v be_v a_o juncture_n make_v to_o obstruct_v the_o ordinary_a course_n of_o regiment_n upon_o a_o revolt_n and_o it_o be_v in_o this_o case_n to_o be_v high_o observable_a that_o the_o discontent_n of_o religion_n be_v ever_o chief_a and_o ringleader_n for_o as_o it_o be_v natural_a for_o mankind_n to_o know_v so_o also_o to_o be_v know_v to_o know_v in_o such_o sort_n that_o we_o many_o time_n covet_v to_o know_v but_o through_o pride_n to_o appear_v know_v it_o must_v therefore_o be_v presume_v that_o the_o author_n and_o abetter_n of_o each_o sect_n and_o congregation_n seek_v to_o make_v themselves_o famous_a by_o the_o number_n and_o quality_n of_o those_o proselyte_n they_o shall_v gain_v from_o one_o another_o that_o therefore_o in_o order_n to_o this_o increase_n and_o that_o of_o their_o own_o reputation_n they_o must_v vilify_v and_o deprave_v the_o judgement_n and_o practice_n of_o their_o opposite_n and_o thereby_o of_o necessary_a consequence_n draw_v on_o exasperation_n and_o breach_n of_o charity_n and_o if_o the_o separation_n be_v obedience_n we_o be_v to_o give_v to_o god_n do_v depend_v on_o that_o belief_n we_o have_v of_o his_o power_n goodness_n and_o truth_n so_o also_o do_v that_o respect_n and_o obedience_n which_o we_o be_v to_o give_v to_o the_o church_n his_o representative_a power_n on_o earth_n depend_v on_o our_o persuasion_n of_o its_o veracity_n and_o authority_n so_o that_o if_o man_n can_v be_v once_o bring_v to_o to_o disbelieve_v her_o soundness_n or_o insufficiency_n even_o so_o far_o as_o her_o communion_n may_v be_v hazardous_a and_o damnable_a obedience_n to_o she_o in_o any_o sort_n be_v not_o to_o be_v long_o expect_v and_o therefore_o although_o god_n have_v reserve_v to_o himself_o the_o prerogative_n of_o try_v the_o heart_n and_o reins_o and_o prince_n can_v have_v no_o cognizance_n and_o jurisdiction_n over_o the_o thought_n and_o belief_n of_o man_n yet_o so_o far_o as_o these_o their_o thought_n and_o persuasion_n do_v by_o word_n or_o action_n make_v open_a
