accuse_v our_o lord_n himself_o be_v not_o his_o prayer_n make_v up_o of_o mere_a general_n sure_o so_o many_o grave_a divine_n shall_v not_o make_v their_o objection_n by_o number_n but_o by_o weight_n and_o due_a and_o sober_a consideration_n how_o little_o they_o consider_v this_o will_n far_o appear_v in_o that_o 3._o they_o confess_v their_o objection_n to_o be_v untrue_a when_o they_o tell_v we_o that_o the_o litany_n be_v for_o grace_n peace_n rain_n fair-weather_n etc._n etc._n and_o indeed_o i_o may_v challenge_v our_o brethren_n to_o show_v any_o particular_n needful_a for_o the_o church_n to_o petition_v at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n in_o her_o public_a worship_n omit_v in_o the_o litany_n 8._o they_o desire_v that_o all_o obsolete_a word_n may_v be_v alter_v ans_fw-fr that_o may_v be_v soon_o do_v for_o few_o or_o no_o obsolete_a word_n be_v in_o the_o liturgy_n but_o do_v not_o god_n do_v not_o we_o understand_v old_a and_o plain_a word_n must_v we_o coin_v new_a one_o to_o please_v he_o and_o ourselves_o must_v we_o be_v rhetorical_a quaint_a and_o curious_a compliment_n god_n in_o our_o prayer_n let_v we_o take_v unto_o we_o those_o word_n the_o church_n have_v from_o god_n word_n put_v into_o our_o mouth_n and_o join_v with_o they_o our_o heart_n and_o let_v we_o not_o doubt_v but_o god_n will_v hear_v we_o gracious_o 9_o it_o trouble_v they_o that_o the_o public_a worship_n of_o god_n may_v not_o be_v administer_v by_o any_o that_o dare_v not_o wear_v a_o surplice_n ans_fw-fr who_o be_v those_o tender_a one_o that_o dare_v not_o what_o a_o frightful_a bugg_n be_v a_o surplice_n that_o you_o dare_v not_o wear_v it_o in_o the_o administration_n of_o the_o public_a worship_n nay_o you_o dare_v refuse_v to_o administer_v in_o god_n public_a worship_n rather_o than_o wear_v a_o surplice_n your_o master_n beza_n be_v not_o so_o timorous_a or_o dainty_a mihi_fw-la videtur_fw-la ecclesias_fw-la minime_fw-la deserendas_fw-la propter_fw-la pileum_fw-la aut_fw-la vestes_fw-la aut_fw-la aliquid_fw-la aliud_fw-la hujusmodi_fw-la veer_fw-la medium_n aut_fw-la indifferens_fw-la to_o i_o it_o seem_v that_o we_o ought_v not_o to_o forsake_v the_o church_n for_o cap_n or_o vestment_n or_o any_o other_o such_o like_a thing_n of_o a_o nature_n mix_v and_o indifferent_a mr._n moulin_n be_v not_o so_o tender_a can_v as_o he_o profess_v willing_o wear_v a_o fool's-coat_n and_o cap_n so_o he_o may_v free_o and_o public_o administer_v god_n true_a and_o holy_a worship_n be_v not_o different_a and_o decent_a vesture_n by_o god_n himself_o appoint_v to_o his_o priest_n in_o their_o public_a and_o holy_a ministration_n and_o why_o may_v not_o the_o governor_n of_o the_o church_n command_v under_o the_o gospel_n the_o like_a decent_a and_o distinct_a habit_n to_o minister_n which_o god_n command_v under_o the_o law_n so_o as_o no_o religion_n or_o sanctity_n be_v place_v in_o they_o as_o we_o declare_v there_o be_v not_o but_o they_o be_v only_o enjoin_v for_o comeliness_n and_o gravity_n suitable_a to_o such_o solemnity_n solemn_a action_n of_o royalty_n and_o justice_n have_v their_o suitable_a ornament_n enjoin_v hooker_n and_o they_o be_v unto_o they_o a_o beauty_n and_o beget_v from_o the_o people_n a_o veneration_n be_v they_o only_o a_o stain_n in_o religion_n these_o general_a objection_n against_o the_o common_a prayer_n in_o their_o grand_a debate_n i_o think_v good_a to_o consider_v together_o with_o their_o reason_n in_o their_o petition_n of_o peace_n that_o they_o may_v see_v we_o do_v not_o slight_v nor_o fear_v any_o of_o their_o force_n but_o dare_v encounter_v their_o whole_a strength_n their_o particular_a objection_n against_o the_o part_n of_o the_o liturgy_n be_v long_o since_o by_o mr._n hooker_n and_o other_o so_o convince_o answer_v those_o which_o be_v old_a and_o the_o new_a be_v so_o weak_a and_o inconsiderable_a that_o they_o deserve_v not_o a_o sober_a animadversion_n and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v not_o give_v the_o reader_n the_o trouble_n of_o a_o confutation_n to_o expose_v a_o few_o of_o they_o be_v enough_o and_o he_o may_v judge_v of_o the_o rest_n by_o their_o assize_n 1._o they_o desire_v the_o word_n minister_n which_o be_v use_v in_o the_o absolution_n and_o divers_a other_o place_n may_v be_v use_v throughout_o and_o not_o priest_n and_o curate_n 2._o the_o confession_n they_o tell_v we_o be_v very_o defective_a not_o clear_o express_v original_a sin_n nor_o sufficient_o enumerate_v actual_a sin_n with_o their_o aggravation_n but_o consist_v only_o of_o general_n whereas_o confession_n be_v the_o exercise_n of_o repentance_n aught_o to_o be_v more_o particular_a this_o be_v already_o answer_v 3._o the_o often_o repeat_v the_o lord_n prayer_n and_o the_o gloria_fw-la patri_fw-la come_v within_o compass_n of_o those_o vain_a repetition_n our_o saviour_n condemn_v a_o vain_a objection_n and_o may_v be_v as_o well_o make_v against_o david_n psal_n 136._o and_o against_o many_o other_o his_o psalm_n as_o also_o against_o moses_n solomon_n and_o our_o saviour_n himself_o 4._o they_o will_v have_v that_o petition_n in_o the_o litany_n good_a lord_n deliver_v we_o from_o sudden_a death_n to_o be_v alter_v thus_o good_a lord_n deliver_v we_o from_o die_v sudden_o and_o unprepared_o 5._o they_o will_v have_v that_o prayer_n that_o it_o may_v please_v god_n to_o preserve_v all_o that_o travel_n by_o land_n or_o by_o water_n to_o be_v change_v and_o express_v indefinite_o all_o that_o travel_n 6._o they_o express_v their_o dislike_n of_o kneel_v at_o the_o read_n of_o the_o commandment_n do_v they_o never_o break_v any_o of_o they_o and_o be_v there_o not_o a_o prayer_n subsequent_a to_o each_o of_o they_o lord_n have_v mercy_n upon_o we_o 7._o they_o be_v offend_v at_o that_o expression_n in_o the_o first_o prayer_n before_o baptism_n that_o god_n by_o his_o son_n our_o saviour_n be_v baptize_v in_o the_o river_n jordan_n have_v sanctify_v that_o and_o all_o other_o water_n to_o the_o mystical_a wash_n away_o of_o sin_n to_o satisfy_v this_o nice_a scruple_n it_o be_v change_v and_o the_o word_n all_o leave_v out_o i_o shall_v no_o further_o pursue_v these_o trifle_n profess_v my_o great_a grief_n and_o astonishment_n that_o person_n pretend_v to_o so_o great_a gravity_n can_v possible_o be_v guilty_a of_o such_o lightness_n it_o be_v a_o piece_n of_o pride_n and_o weakness_n in_o calvin_n to_o charge_v our_o liturgy_n as_o contain_v in_o it_o tolerabiles_fw-la ineptias_fw-la these_o and_o such_o like_a light_n and_o trivial_a exception_n of_o our_o brethren_n will_v to_o any_o sober_a judgement_n appear_v ineptiae_fw-la intolerabiles_fw-la leave_v their_o grand_a debate_n which_o i_o think_v in_o the_o prophet_n and_o apostle_n sense_n may_v without_o uncharitableness_n be_v affix_v not_o only_o as_o the_o title_n but_o be_v much_o the_o subject_a and_o design_n too_o of_o their_o paper_n i_o go_v on_o to_o the_o consideration_n of_o their_o petition_n for_o peace_n sweet_a be_v the_o name_n of_o peace_n and_o now_o if_o ever_o sweet_a be_v the_o peace_n of_o the_o state_n after_o so_o long_o civil_a war_n and_o the_o peace_n of_o the_o church_n after_o so_o long_a division_n and_o persecution_n peace_n be_v a_o blessing_n of_o blessing_n not_o a_o single_a but_o a_o complicate_v blessing_n it_o be_v peace_n that_o put_v we_o into_o and_o keep_v we_o in_o possession_n of_o all_o we_o enjoy_v saint_n paul_n tell_v we_o of_o a_o bond_n of_o peace_n peace_n be_v the_o bond_n of_o our_o liberty_n property_n estate_n and_o life_n and_o of_o that_o which_o shall_v be_v to_o we_o dear_a than_o all_o these_o our_o religion_n it_o be_v this_o religious_a peace_n for_o which_o they_o petition_v o_o that_o they_o have_v hearken_v to_o the_o petition_n of_o other_o before_o but_o then_o they_o prepare_v for_o war_n and_o sound_v the_o trumpet_n to_o battle_n then_o to_o talk_v of_o peace_n and_o accommodation_n be_v the_o mark_n of_o a_o malignant_a then_o curse_v you_o meroz_n be_v the_o text_n and_o o_o take_v heed_n of_o treaty_n well_o it_o be_v happy_a if_o at_o last_o thought_n of_o peace_n may_v be_v entertain_v but_o my_o brethren_n why_o petition_v you_o for_o peace_n be_v it_o not_o peace_n if_o not_o where_o be_v the_o blame_n who_o be_v those_o which_o hinder_a peace_n then_o be_v it_o peace_n in_o the_o church_n when_o the_o magistrate_n be_v at_o peace_n with_o the_o church_n and_o a_o defender_n of_o the_o faith_n when_o minister_n be_v at_o peace_n with_o themselves_o and_o join_v regular_o in_o their_o holy_a ministration_n when_o minister_n and_o their_o people_n be_v at_o peace_n the_o one_o teach_v and_o the_o other_o embrace_v sound_a doctrine_n when_o magistrate_n minister_n and_o people_n do_v public_o open_o free_o uniform_o profess_v and_o hold_v the_o true_a christian_a religion_n do_v join_v and_o unite_v in_o the_o public_a worship_n
have_v all_o due_a veneration_n for_o parliament_n next_o unto_o and_o under_o the_o king_n but_o i_o never_o learn_v that_o they_o be_v sharer_n in_o the_o supremacy_n and_o i_o believe_v it_o will_v be_v a_o flattery_n as_o displease_v to_o a_o parliament_n as_o injurious_a to_o the_o king_n to_o ascribe_v unto_o it_o a_o part_n of_o the_o sovereignty_n one_o of_o you_o tell_v we_o that_o former_o the_o name_n of_o a_o king_n be_v a_o idol_n unto_o his_o subject_n derby_n but_o now_o by_o the_o courage_n of_o the_o parliament_n it_o be_v death_n to_o that_o man_n and_o his_o father_n house_n that_o dare_v name_v a_o king_n and_o you_o make_v a_o idol_n of_o the_o name_n of_o a_o parliament_n and_o dare_v to_o say_v that_o if_o you_o have_v know_v the_o parliament_n have_v be_v the_o beginner_n and_o in_o most_o fault_n yet_o their_o ruin_n be_v a_o punishment_n great_a than_o any_o fault_n against_o a_o king_n his_o murder_n and_o the_o ruin_n of_o his_o family_n and_o all_o his_o loyal_a subject_n can_v from_o he_o deserve_v and_o now_o sir_n your_o audacity_n beget_v in_o i_o the_o confidence_n to_o tell_v you_o that_o your_o rebellion_n be_v most_o foul_a and_o the_o arm_n you_o bear_v be_v against_o both_o king_n and_o parliament_n for_o that_o you_o call_v so_o be_v a_o idol_n a_o nothing_o no_o parliament_n but_o only_o some_o corrupt_a member_n of_o it_o which_o have_v by_o tumult_n and_o threat_n fright_v away_o as_o the_o king_n so_o all_o the_o sound_n and_o loyal_a member_n of_o parliament_n both_o lord_n and_o commons_o and_o that_o in_o so_o great_a a_o number_n that_o they_o make_v a_o parliament_n in_o oxford_n now_o see_v the_o parliament_n thus_o divide_v a_o part_n against_o the_o king_n a_o part_n as_o great_a for_o he_o prudence_n and_o loyalty_n may_v have_v teach_v you_o either_o to_o have_v sit_v still_o and_o bewail_v the_o unhappy_a rupture_n and_o division_n and_o pray_v for_o a_o closure_n and_o reconciliation_n or_o to_o have_v join_v with_o the_o king_n and_o the_o loyal_a part_n of_o his_o parliament_n but_o of_o the_o sovereignty_n of_o parliament_n enough_o i_o pray_v god_n grant_v the_o king_n and_o kingdom_n may_v nevermore_o see_v the_o like_a to_o that_o you_o plead_v for_o and_o serve_v under_o with_o such_o a_o perseverance_n that_o you_o say_v you_o will_v do_v it_o again_o in_o the_o same_o state_n of_o thing_n peace_n your_o honest_a friend_n when_o he_o see_v here_o a_o leg_n and_o there_o and_o arm_n in_o the_o way_n sai_z as_o you_o tell_v we_o it_o be_v time_n for_o he_o to_o stop_v it_o be_v in_o he_o a_o poor_a pusillanimity_n but_o such_o be_v your_o magnanimity_n that_o leg_n and_o arm_n can_v not_o stop_v your_o career_n you_o can_v undaunted_o march_v on_o through_o blood_n and_o slaughter_n it_o be_v a_o cowardly_a cruel_a triumph_n in_o your_o other_o honest_a friend_n mr._n love_n to_o flourish_v his_o handkerchief_n dip_v in_o the_o blood_n of_o that_o great_a prelate_n when_o dead_a who_o venerable_a face_n he_o dare_v not_o have_v look_v on_o when_o alive_a but_o your_o valiant_a sword_n drench_v itself_o in_o blood_n in_o the_o field_n of_o mars_n you_o be_v as_o bold_a as_o the_o brutish_a brave_a horse_n in_o job_n etc._n you_o clothe_v your_o neck_n with_o thunder_n the_o glory_n of_o your_o nostril_n be_v terrible_a you_o rejoice_v in_o your_o strength_n you_o go_v on_o to_o meet_v the_o arm_a man_n you_o mock_v at_o fear_n be_v not_o affright_v nor_o turn_v your_o back_n to_o the_o sword_n you_o say_v among_o the_o trumpet_n ha_o ha_o and_o your_o trumpet_n sound_v as_o loud_o as_o they_o curse_v you_o meroz_n curse_v you_o bitter_o 48.10_o curse_a be_v the_o man_n that_o do_v the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n negligent_o curse_v be_v he_o that_o keep_v back_o his_o sword_n from_o blood_n but_o it_o be_v time_n to_o sound_v a_o retreat_n valiant_a sir_n have_v your_o arm_n be_v no_o stout_a than_o your_o argument_n you_o have_v forsake_v the_o field_n as_o you_o plain_o do_v when_o in_o the_o close_a of_o your_o reason_n for_o the_o late_a war_n you_o confess_v that_o every_o one_o of_o your_o reason_n be_v not_o a_o sufficient_a medium_n to_o infer_v your_o conclusion_n but_o altogether_o show_v upon_o what_o ground_n you_o proceed_v to_o dispute_v the_o point_n so_o that_o you_o justify_v treason_n upon_o the_o very_a same_o ground_n on_o which_o the_o noble_a earl_n of_o strafford_n be_v condemn_v on_o pretence_n of_o it_o when_o none_o can_v be_v prove_v against_o he_o single_a he_o must_v die_v for_o treason_n accumulative_a i_o shall_v ease_v your_o patience_n upon_o this_o subject_n when_o i_o have_v reminded_a you_o that_o you_o have_v much_o mistimed_n your_o holy_a commonwealth_n therein_o you_o show_v yourself_o a_o great_a dictatour_n but_o little_a a_o politician_n and_o less_o a_o prophet_n when_o you_o send_v it_o forth_o in_o the_o dark_a and_o dismal_a night_n of_o confusion_n and_o can_v not_o stay_v to_o take_v a_o prospect_n of_o the_o morning_n when_o the_o blaze_a and_o affright_v comet_n pestiferous_a matter_n be_v spend_v the_o sun_n be_v arise_v in_o brightness_n and_o return_v in_o glory_n but_o your_o zeal_n for_o the_o restore_a your_o prudent_a and_o pious_a richard_n blind_v your_o eye_n and_o that_o heat_n put_v out_o the_o light_n and_o so_o you_o think_v the_o commonwealth_n will_v bring_v he_o in_o again_o well_o yet_o you_o be_v not_o whole_o forsake_v in_o your_o politic_n but_o when_o though_o late_o you_o discover_v the_o protectorship_n and_o the_o commonwealth_n expire_a and_o the_o king_n like_o to_o be_v restore_v you_o expiate_v your_o little_a error_n by_o a_o great_a merit_n you_o preach_v to_o the_o honourable_a house_n of_o commons_o in_o parliament_n and_o as_o in_o your_o epistle_n and_o elsewhere_o you_o boast_v god_n and_o they_o put_v upon_o you_o a_o great_a honour_n the_o next_o morning_n after_o they_o acknowledge_v his_o majesty_n be_v authority_n but_o sure_o sir_n it_o be_v no_o effect_n of_o your_o sermon_n but_o their_o own_o loyalty_n which_o wrought_v upon_o they_o to_o make_v that_o acknowledgement_n you_o all_o along_o in_o your_o sermon_n reflect_v on_o the_o royal_a party_n as_o profane_v and_o censure_v the_o puritan_n and_o precisian_n who_o dare_v not_o be_v so_o bad_a as_o they_o nay_o you_o implicit_o accuse_v that_o honourable_a house_n 18._o as_o if_o there_o be_v some_o among_o they_o and_o it_o be_v easy_a to_o guess_v who_o you_o mean_v that_o will_v take_v that_o man_n as_o a_o puritan_n and_o fanatic_a who_o will_v employ_v half_a so_o much_o time_n for_o his_o soul_n and_o the_o service_n of_o the_o lord_n as_o they_o do_v in_o unnecessary_a sport_n and_o pleasure_n and_o pamper_v their_o flesh_n and_o you_o free_o tell_v they_o that_o god_n must_v have_v the_o precedency_n 20._o and_o as_o our_o calamity_n begin_v with_o difference_n in_o religion_n and_o still_o that_o be_v the_o wound_n that_o most_o need_v close_v and_o with_o grief_n and_o shame_n we_o see_v this_o work_n so_o long_o undo_v which_o plain_o imply_v you_o will_v have_v this_o work_v do_v according_a to_o your_o covenant_n by_o the_o parliament_n before_o the_o king_n come_v in_o and_o put_v a_o high_a value_n on_o yourself_o and_o all_o of_o your_o mind_n you_o declare_v they_o shut_v you_o out_o if_o they_o will_v enforce_v you_o to_o administer_v sacrament_n without_o discipline_n and_o the_o conduct_n of_o your_o own_o discretion_n and_o say_v you_o give_v first_o to_o god_n the_o thing_n that_o be_v god_n and_o then_o give_v unto_o caesar_n the_o thing_n that_o be_v caesar_n that_o be_v first_o set_v up_o the_o discipline_n before_o you_o admit_v caesar_n this_o be_v the_o method_n of_o your_o brethren_n in_o scotland_n and_o you_o here_o again_o caution_n and_o share_v the_o sovereignty_n it_o be_v right_a indeed_o as_o you_o say_v a_o papist_n must_v cease_v to_o be_v a_o papist_n if_o he_o be_v true_o and_o full_o loyal_a to_o his_o sovereign_n and_o it_o be_v as_o true_a a_o presbyterian_a must_v cease_v to_o be_v a_o presbyterian_a if_o he_o be_v true_o and_o full_o loyal_a to_o his_o sovereign_n but_o you_o hide_v he_o under_o the_o general_a name_n of_o protestant_n and_o tell_v we_o so_o a_o protestant_n must_v so_o far_o cease_v to_o be_v a_o protestant_n before_o he_o can_v be_v disloyal_a you_o shall_v have_v say_v a_o protestant_n true_o conformable_a to_o the_o church_n of_o england_n such_o a_o one_o can_v never_o be_v disloyal_a but_o behold_v how_o rare_o you_o prove_v your_o nonconforming_a protestant_n can_v be_v disloyal_a for_o rom._n the_o 13_o be_v part_n of_o the_o rule_n of_o his_o controversy_n they_o have_v here_o throw_v down_o all_o they_o have_v build_v all_o their_o 20_o reason_n fall_v and_o be_v break_v in_o piece_n as_o dagon_n before_o the_o ark._n this_o chapter_n acquaint_v we_o that_o some_o jew_n though_o convert_v to_o the_o christian_a faith_n and_o embrace_v the_o gospel_n yet_o think_v themselves_o bind_v to_o the_o observation_n of_o the_o whole_a moysaicall_a law_n and_o they_o think_v the_o convert_v gentile_n so_o bind_v also_o and_o tell_v they_o that_o except_o they_o be_v circumcise_v and_o keep_v the_o law_n of_o moses_n they_o can_v not_o be_v save_v hereupon_o arise_v dissension_n and_o disputation_n and_o a_o appeal_n be_v make_v to_o a_o council_n at_o jerusalem_n which_o upon_o the_o hear_n and_o debate_v the_o question_n determine_v that_o the_o convert_a gentile_n shall_v not_o be_v oblige_v to_o circumcision_n nor_o to_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n but_o in_o yieldance_n to_o the_o convert_a jew_n who_o be_v zealous_a of_o the_o law_n and_o to_o keep_v peace_n with_o they_o they_o shall_v abstain_v from_o some_o few_o thing_n in_o their_o nature_n indifferent_a but_o necessary_a in_o order_n to_o peace_n and_o charity_n from_o meat_n offer_v to_o idol_n from_o blood_n and_o from_o thing_n strangle_v behold_v here_o the_o first_o and_o great_a council_n that_o ever_o be_v in_o the_o christian_a church_n to_o compose_v a_o difference_n meet_v and_o make_v a_o law_n of_o abstinence_n from_o some_o thing_n indifferent_a and_o otherwise_o in_o themselves_o lawful_a this_o be_v plain_o the_o case_n the_o act_n of_o the_o council_n and_o decision_n of_o the_o question_n and_o yet_o these_o man_n allege_v the_o act_n of_o the_o council_n to_o prove_v the_o quite_o contrary_a i_o be_o amaze_v to_o see_v how_o they_o change_v and_o clip_v the_o word_n and_o pervert_v the_o sense_n of_o the_o scripture_n they_o cite_v for_o their_o end_n and_o i_o fear_v against_o their_o conscience_n they_o say_v the_o apostle_n and_o elder_n act._n 15.28_o declare_v unto_o the_o church_n that_o it_o seem_v good_a unto_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o they_o to_o lay_v upon_o they_o no_o great_a burden_n than_o necessary_a thing_n do_v the_o apostle_n and_o elder_n so_o declare_v then_o we_o yield_v the_o cause_n do_v they_o not_o then_o ought_v they_o with_o sin_n and_o shame_n to_o yield_v it_o they_o leave_v out_o the_o word_n these_o because_o they_o know_v it_o make_v against_o they_o limit_v the_o church_n order_n to_o some_o few_o particular_a thing_n there_o present_o name_v thing_n offer_v to_o idol_n blood_n etc._n etc._n now_o whereas_o the_o church_n make_v a_o temporary_a order_n for_o some_o particular_a thing_n and_o declare_v thus_o it_o seem_v good_a to_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o to_o we_o to_o lay_v upon_o you_o no_o great_a burden_n necessary_a beside_o these_o thing_n or_o these_o necessary_a thing_n they_o leave_v out_o that_o word_n these_o of_o main_a importance_n and_o huge_o against_o they_o and_o will_v make_v a_o stand_a canon_n of_o their_o own_o and_o father_n it_o upon_o the_o apostle_n that_o the_o church_n ought_v to_o impose_v no_o other_o than_o necessary_a thing_n and_o yet_o too_o by_o their_o own_o confession_n these_o thing_n impose_v be_v not_o simple_o in_o their_o own_o nature_n unchangeable_o necessary_a but_o by_o accident_n pro_fw-la tempore_fw-la &_o loco_fw-la and_o whereas_o they_o say_v the_o council_n impose_v they_o because_o antecedent_o necessary_a the_o contrary_n be_v most_o true_a these_o thing_n be_v not_o antecedent_o necessary_a but_o only_o as_o themselves_o say_v pro_fw-la tempore_fw-la for_o the_o time_n there_o be_v at_o this_o time_n a_o difference_n rise_v about_o the_o jewish_a ceremony_n it_o be_v not_o necessary_a before_o the_o council_n now_o so_o determine_v that_o the_o convert_a gentile_n shall_v abstain_v from_o thing_n offer_v to_o idol_n strangle_v and_o blood_n that_o law_n belong_v only_o to_o the_o jew_n never_o to_o the_o gentile_n behold_v how_o rare_o well_o these_o man_n argue_v to_o prove_v church-governor_n may_v not_o determine_v in_o thing_n indifferent_a for_o order_n and_o unity_n but_o all_o aught_o to_o be_v leave_v to_o their_o own_o liberty_n they_o produce_v a_o scripture_n which_o prove_v most_o plain_o that_o church-governor_n have_v and_o may_v determine_v and_o restrain_v those_o under_o they_o from_o the_o use_n of_o thing_n indifferent_a all_o the_o thing_n touch_v which_o the_o council_n they_o produce_v do_v give_v order_n be_v indifferent_a except_o one_o fornication_n which_o be_v of_o another_o nature_n but_o with_o these_o prohibit_v for_o that_o the_o gentile_n allow_v themselves_o in_o it_o and_o scarce_o look_v on_o it_o as_o a_o sin_n this_o of_o their_o 20_o the_o and_o last_o reason_n which_o i_o have_v thus_o at_o large_a consider_v for_o that_o they_o lie_v so_o much_o weight_n upon_o it_o though_o it_o prove_v as_o the_o rest_n light_n in_o the_o balance_n i_o shall_v for_o a_o conclusion_n of_o all_o clear_o evidence_n the_o church_n power_n to_o prescribe_v external_a rite_n and_o ceremony_n for_o order_n and_o decency_n and_o our_o obligation_n to_o conform_v unto_o they_o from_o the_o judgement_n of_o two_o ancient_a father_n for_o who_o i_o suppose_v our_o brethren_n have_v some_o reverence_n and_o if_o those_o can_v move_v they_o from_o the_o judgement_n of_o a_o modern_a father_n for_o who_o i_o be_o sure_a they_o have_v a_o high_a veneration_n it_o be_v st._n augustine_n rule_n prudenti_fw-la christiano_n eo_fw-la modo_fw-la agendum_fw-la esse_fw-la quo_fw-la agit_fw-fr ecclesia_fw-la ad_fw-la quam_fw-la devenerit_fw-la and_o his_o mother_n have_v use_v when_o she_o be_v in_o africa_n to_o fast_o on_o the_o saturday_n and_o come_v to_o milan_n where_o that_o fast_o be_v not_o observe_v be_v doubtful_a what_o to_o do_v hereupon_o her_o son_n consult_v saint_n ambrose_n who_o thus_o answer_v when_o i_o be_o here_o at_o milan_n i_o do_v not_o fast_o on_o the_o saturday_n when_o i_o be_o at_o rome_n i_o do_v fast_o on_o the_o saturday_n and_o unto_o what_o church_n soever_o you_o come_v keep_v the_o custom_n of_o it_o if_o you_o be_v willing_a neither_o to_o give_v nor_o take_v scandal_n from_o which_o rule_n of_o st._n augustine_n and_o advice_n of_o st._n ambrose_n a_o learned_a person_n make_v these_o remark_n 1._o that_o divers_a country_n profess_v the_o same_o religion_n may_v have_v divers_a ceremony_n 2._o that_o in_o church_n independent_a one_o be_v not_o bind_v of_o necessity_n to_o follow_v another_o 3._o that_o it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o every_o private_a person_n to_o conform_v himself_o to_o the_o laudable_a custom_n and_o constitution_n of_o the_o church_n wherein_o he_o live_v or_o wherever_o he_o come_v you_o have_v hear_v the_o judgement_n of_o these_o ancient_a father_n will_v you_o hear_v your_o modern_a father_n mr._n calvin_n and_o he_o deliver_v his_o judgement_n so_o full_o and_o with_o so_o much_o strength_n and_o clearness_n assert_v the_o church_n power_n to_o ordain_v external_a rite_n and_o ceremony_n that_o master_n hooker_n himself_o can_v not_o say_v more_o or_o better_o whereas_o many_o unskilful_a man_n when_o they_o hear_v that_o conscience_n be_v wicked_o bind_v and_o god_n worship_v in_o vain_a by_o the_o tradition_n of_o man_n do_v at_o once_o blot_v out_o altogether_o all_o law_n whereby_o the_o order_n of_o the_o church_n be_v set_v in_o frame_n therefore_o it_o be_v convenient_a also_o to_o meet_v with_o their_o error_n very_o in_o this_o point_n it_o
