though_o he_o have_v no_o authority_n to_o judge_v of_o truth_n for_o other_o man_n yet_o he_o may_v be_v judge_n whether_o other_o man_n be_v alienate_v from_o the_o truth_n or_o no_o and_o so_o may_v have_v authority_n to_o lay_v some_o penalty_n upon_o those_o who_o he_o see_v to_o be_v so_o to_o bring_v they_o to_o judge_v more_o sincere_o for_o themselves_o to_o show_v that_o the_o care_n of_o soul_n be_v not_o commit_v to_o the_o civil_a magistrate_n any_o more_o than_o to_o other_o man_n 7._o the_o author_n endeavour_v to_o prove_v that_o it_o be_v neither_o commit_v to_o he_o by_o god_n nor_o by_o the_o people_n now_o in_o my_o answer_n 22._o i_o think_v i_o show_v that_o he_o fail_v as_o to_o both_o these_o point_n so_o that_o whether_o we_o say_v the_o care_n of_o soul_n be_v commit_v to_o the_o magistrate_n by_o god_n or_o that_o it_o be_v vest_v in_o he_o by_o the_o consent_n of_o the_o people_n either_o of_o these_o assertion_n may_v be_v true_a for_o any_o thing_n he_o have_v say_v to_o prove_v the_o contrary_n particular_o whereas_o he_o say_v that_o no_o such_o power_n as_o the_o care_n of_o soul_n commit_v to_o the_o magistrate_n imply_v can_v be_v vest_v in_o the_o magistrate_n by_o the_o consent_n of_o the_o people_n because_o no_o man_n can_v so_o far_o abandon_v the_o care_n of_o his_o own_o salvation_n as_o blind_o to_o leave_v it_o to_o the_o choice_n of_o any_o other_o whether_o prince_n or_o subject_a to_o prescribe_v to_o he_o what_o faith_n or_o worship_n he_o shall_v embrace_v to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o as_o the_o power_n of_o the_o magistrate_n in_o reference_n to_o religion_n or_o the_o salvation_n of_o soul_n be_v ordain_v for_o the_o bring_v man_n to_o take_v such_o care_n as_o they_o ought_v of_o their_o salvation_n that_o they_o may_v not_o blind_o leave_v it_o to_o the_o choice_n neither_o of_o any_o other_o person_n nor_o yet_o of_o their_o own_o lust_n and_o passion_n to_o prescribe_v to_o they_o what_o faith_n or_o say_v you_o if_o it_o be_v the_o power_n of_o the_o magistrate_n it_o be_v he_o and_o what_o need_v the_o people_n vest_n it_o in_o he_o unless_o there_o be_v need_n and_o it_o be_v the_o best_a what_o a_o miserable_a cavil_v be_v this_o for_o can_v i_o inquire_v whence_o the_o magistrate_n receive_v his_o power_n without_o suppose_v it_o he_o before_o he_o receive_v it_o or_o can_v i_o say_v that_o the_o power_n of_o the_o magistrate_n be_v such_o in_o the_o nature_n of_o it_o that_o if_o we_o suppose_v it_o vest_v in_o he_o by_o the_o consent_n of_o the_o people_n this_o will_v not_o import_v their_o abandon_v the_o care_n of_o their_o salvation_n but_o rather_o the_o contrary_a because_o it_o be_v the_o interest_n of_o the_o people_n suppose_v it_o in_o their_o power_n to_o in_o the_o magistrate_n to_o punish_v they_o when_o they_o reject_v that_o religion_n so_o propose_v to_o bring_v they_o to_o act_v according_a to_o reason_n and_o sound_a judgement_n etc._n etc._n i_o think_v that_o be_v far_o enough_o from_o leave_v it_o to_o the_o choice_n of_o another_o man_n to_o prescribe_v to_o they_o what_o faith_n or_o worship_n they_o shall_v embrace_v but_o it_o religion_n and_o to_o bring_v you_o to_o that_o which_o beside_o the_o pleasant_a talk_n of_o such_o reason_n and_o argument_n as_o be_v proper_a and_o sufficient_a to_o convince_v man_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o magistrate_n religion_n though_o it_o be_v a_o false_a one_o be_v just_a as_o much_o as_o to_o say_v it_o be_v so_o because_o in_o the_o magistrate_n opinion_n it_o be_v so_o and_o because_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v expect_v that_o he_o will_v act_v against_o his_o opinion_n as_o if_o the_o magistrate_n opinion_n can_v change_v the_o nature_n of_o thing_n and_o turn_v a_o power_n to_o promote_v the_o true_a religion_n into_o a_o power_n to_o promote_v a_o false_a one_o no_o sir_n the_o magistrate_n opinion_n have_v no_o such_o virtue_n it_o may_v indeed_o keep_v he_o from_o exercise_v the_o power_n he_o have_v to_o promote_v the_o true_a religion_n and_o it_o may_v lead_v he_o to_o abuse_v the_o pretence_n of_o it_o to_o the_o promote_a a_o false_a one_o but_o it_o can_v neither_o destroy_v that_o power_n nor_o make_v it_o any_o thing_n but_o what_o it_o be_v and_o therefore_o whatever_o the_o magistrate_n opinion_n be_v his_o power_n be_v give_v he_o as_o the_o apostle_n power_n be_v to_o they_o for_o edification_n only_o not_o for_o destruction_n and_o it_o may_v always_o be_v say_v of_o he_o what_o st._n paul_n say_v of_o himself_o that_o he_o can_v do_v nothing_o against_o the_o truth_n but_o for_o the_o truth_n and_o therefore_o if_o the_o magistrate_n punish_v i_o to_o bring_v i_o to_o a_o false_a religion_n it_o be_v not_o his_o opinion_n that_o will_v excuse_v he_o when_o he_o come_v to_o answer_v for_o it_o to_o his_o judge_n for_o certain_o man_n be_v as_o accountable_a for_o their_o opinion_n those_o of_o they_o i_o mean_v which_o influence_n their_o practice_n as_o they_o be_v for_o their_o action_n here_o be_v therefore_o no_o shift_n forward_o and_o backward_o as_o you_o pretend_v nor_o any_o circle_n but_o in_o your_o own_o imagination_n for_o though_o it_o be_v true_a that_o i_o say_v the_o magistrate_n have_v no_o power_n to_o punish_v man_n to_o compel_v they_o to_o his_o religion_n yet_o i_o no_o where_o say_v nor_o will_v it_o follow_v from_o any_o thing_n i_o do_v say_v that_o he_o have_v power_n to_o compel_v they_o to_o consider_v reason_n and_o argument_n proper_a to_o convince_v they_o of_o the_o truth_n
