chap._n 34_o as_o for_o baptism_n it_o be_v a_o sacrament_n in_o the_o which_o the_o lord_n do_v represent_v unto_o we_o our_o regeneration_n b._n whereof_o the_o baptism_n be_v as_o the_o seal_n and_o as_o a_o visible_a testimony_n whereby_o he_o testify_v unto_o we_o first_o that_o he_o receive_v we_o into_o his_o house_n which_o be_v his_o church_n and_o that_o he_o do_v avow_v we_o to_o be_v his_o child_n and_o to_o be_v heir_n of_o his_o kingdom_n b._n after_o that_o he_o do_v testify_v to_o we_o also_o that_o he_o have_v purge_v and_o cleanse_v we_o from_o our_o sin_n by_o the_o represent_v towards_o those_o that_o be_v faithful_a which_o have_v the_o instrument_n to_o receive_v they_o to_o wit_n faith_n without_o the_o which_o we_o may_v have_v no_o communication_n with_o jesus_n christ_n of_o the_o baptism_n of_o young_a child_n chap._n 35._o and_o albeit_o that_o the_o little_a child_n can_v not_o have_v faith_n by_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n as_o the_o great_a may_v yet_o notwithstanding_o this_o sacrament_n do_v not_o appertain_v only_o to_o those_o that_o be_v of_o year_n and_o be_v capable_a of_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o have_v already_o make_v profession_n of_o their_o faith_n or_o be_v in_o age_n to_o do_v it_o but_o it_o belong_v also_o to_o their_o child_n because_o they_o be_v comprise_v in_o the_o alliance_n b_o the_o which_o their_o parent_n have_v with_o god_n through_o the_o virtue_n of_o the_o promise_n that_o he_o have_v make_v they_o wherefore_o the_o catabaptist_n and_o all_o other_o that_o reject_v little_a child_n from_o baptism_n do_v they_o wrong_n and_o do_v frustrate_a in_o that_o respect_n the_o virtue_n of_o god_n his_o alliance_n for_o the_o child_n of_o the_o christian_n be_v in_o no_o worse_a case_n than_o be_v those_o of_o the_o jew_n who_o god_n will_v not_o have_v shut_v forth_o from_o circumcision_n in_o stead_n whereof_o the_o christian_a church_n have_v now_o baptism_n of_o the_o child_n that_o be_v bear_v dead_a and_o of_o the_o true_a foundation_n of_o the_o salvation_n of_o all_o man_n chap._n 36._o and_o although_o that_o this_o sacrament_n be_v ordain_v to_o that_o end_n it_o follow_v not_o for_o all_o that_o that_o we_o must_v think_v that_o the_o little_a child_n which_o die_v by_o the_o will_n of_o god_n before_o they_o can_v receive_v this_o outward_n baptism_n be_v in_o any_o danger_n of_o their_o salvation_n only_o for_o want_v of_o this_o baptism_n forsomuch_o as_o it_o happen_v not_o through_o contempt_n of_o this_o holy_a sacrament_n for_o their_o salvation_n a_o nor_o that_o of_o any_o man_n whatsoever_o be_v not_o tie_v to_o the_o visible_a sign_n of_o baptism_n nor_o of_o the_o supper_n but_o depend_v of_o the_o only_a election_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n by_o mean_a of_o the_o benefit_n of_o jesus_n chryst_n and_o of_o the_o virtue_n of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n and_o then_o he_o communicate_v this_o benefit_n to_o his_o elect_v in_o such_o time_n and_o by_o such_o mean_n as_o please_v he_o and_o work_v in_o they_o at_o all_o time_n b_o according_a to_o his_o good_a pleasure_n for_o he_o may_v sanctify_v they_o even_o in_o their_o mother_n belly_n as_o he_o have_v do_v many_o whereof_o we_o have_v apparent_a witness_n in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n of_o the_o administration_n of_o the_o sacrament_n and_o to_o who_o it_o belong_v cha._n 37._o and_o see_v that_o the_o lord_n have_v give_v the_o charge_n of_o administration_n of_o the_o sacrament_n even_o unto_o those_o self_n same_o to_o who_o he_o have_v commit_v the_o administration_n of_o his_o word_n then_o be_v it_o not_o lawful_a for_o any_o to_o administer_v they_o but_o for_o such_o only_a to_o who_o that_o charge_n be_v give_v by_o just_a and_o baptism_n administer_v by_o woman_n and_o of_o the_o error_n that_o therein_o be_v chapter_n 38._o wherefore_o they_o be_v great_o to_o be_v blame_v and_o chief_o woman_n which_o take_v in_o hand_n to_o baptise_v child_n for_o the_o baptism_n which_o they_o take_v in_o hand_n to_o administer_v have_v none_o other_o foundation_n but_o only_o upon_o the_o ignorance_n that_o be_v in_o they_o of_o the_o true_a use_n of_o baptism_n and_o upon_o the_o superstition_n wherein_o they_o have_v be_v nourish_v for_o according_a to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o papist_n man_n have_v think_v that_o the_o salvation_n of_o little_a child_n have_v be_v tie_v and_o knit_v to_o the_o outward_a and_o visible_a baptism_n and_o not_o to_o the_o invisible_a &_o inward_a baptism_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n which_o inward_a baptism_n be_v the_o true_a substance_n of_o the_o true_a baptism_n whereof_o the_o outward_a sign_n be_v a_o figure_n and_o representation_n of_o the_o supper_n of_o our_o lord_n and_o of_o the_o true_a use_n thereof_o chap._n 39_o d_o as_o for_o the_o supper_n it_o be_v also_o ordain_v first_o to_o confirm_v we_o and_o as_o it_o be_v to_o seal_v we_o in_o the_o same_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n the_o which_o we_o obtain_v by_o faith_n

good_a reason_n of_o their_o faith_n it_o seem_v to_o i_o that_o a_o man_n may_v gather_v of_o thy_o word_n that_o not_o only_o they_o ought_v not_o to_o receive_v little_a child_n to_o the_o supper_n but_o also_o they_o ought_v not_o to_o baptise_v they_o until_o the_o time_n they_o come_v to_o the_o age_n in_o the_o which_o they_o may_v yield_v reason_n of_o their_o faith_n and_o understand_v what_o their_o baptism_n do_v signify_v p._n thou_o have_v here_o to_o note_v that_o there_o be_v difference_n between_o receive_v of_o child_n to_o baptism_n and_o receive_v of_o they_o to_o the_o supper_n mat._n what_o difference_n find_v thou_o in_o it_o p._n in_o that_o that_o saint_n paul_n do_v require_v of_o those_o which_o will_v communicate_v at_o the_o supper_n that_o they_o shall_v prove_v themselves_o to_o know_v whether_o they_o be_v meet_v or_o no_o and_o that_o they_o be_v dispose_v to_o receive_v the_o same_o accordingly_z as_z this_o holy_a sacrament_n do_v require_v which_o thing_n be_v not_o so_o require_v in_o baptism_n math._n what_o will_v thou_o conclude_v thereby_o peter_n that_o if_o it_o must_v be_v that_o every_o man_n prove_v himself_o before_o he_o go_v to_o the_o supper_n it_o follow_v then_o that_o they_o be_v not_o yet_o capable_a of_o that_o proof_n which_o be_v not_o so_o far_o forth_o instruct_v as_o they_o may_v prove_v and_o examine_v themselves_o as_o be_v meet_v of_o the_o principal_a foundation_n of_o the_o baptism_n of_o little_a child_n and_o of_o the_o virtue_n of_o the_o alliance_n wheruppon_o it_o be_v ground_v m._n i_o understand_v by_o that_o which_o thou_o have_v heretofore_o say_v that_o none_o can_v well_o prove_v and_o examine_v himself_o to_o communicate_v worthy_o at_o the_o supper_n except_o that_o first_o he_o understand_v what_o mystery_n and_o secret_n this_o sacrament_n contain_v and_o for_o what_o cause_n it_o be_v ordain_v but_o forsomuch_o as_o baptism_n be_v also_o a_o seal_n of_o the_o doctrine_n the_o which_o it_o do_v confirm_v be_v it_o not_o therefore_o also_o needful_a that_o he_o which_o shall_v be_v baptize_v be_v first_o instruct_v in_o the_o doctrine_n whereof_o it_o be_v a_o sacrament_n and_o that_o he_o may_v yield_v reason_n of_o it_o p._n if_o the_o person_n be_v of_o that_o age_n that_o it_o be_v capable_a of_o the_o doctrine_n that_o which_o thou_o say_v be_v require_v but_o there_o be_v other_o consideration_n in_o the_o person_n of_o little_a child_n bear_v of_o faithful_a parent_n which_o be_v already_o receive_v into_o the_o church_n m._n but_o because_o these_o child_n be_v no_o more_o capable_a of_o the_o promise_n make_v in_o baptism_n than_o the_o child_n of_o infidel_n what_o reason_n be_v there_o rather_o to_o baptise_v the_o one_o than_o the_o other_o p._n if_o the_o child_n of_o the_o faithful_a be_v no_o more_o capable_a than_o those_o of_o the_o infidel_n there_o be_v reason_n in_o that_o which_o thou_o say_v m._n i_o see_v not_o wherein_o the_o one_o sort_n be_v more_o capable_a than_o the_o other_o unless_o thou_o show_v it_o i_o more_o plain_o p._n thou_o must_v understand_v that_o the_o promise_v which_o god_n have_v make_v in_o baptism_n quantity_n contain_v the_o promise_n of_o the_o alliance_n the_o which_o god_n have_v make_v with_o his_o people_n in_o the_o which_o he_o comprehend_v not_o only_o the_o faithful_a which_o through_o faith_n be_v admit_v into_o this_o alliance_n but_o also_o their_o child_n and_o the_o child_n of_o their_o child_n m._n will_v thou_o then_o say_v that_o the_o baptism_n of_o child_n which_o have_v faithful_a parent_n be_v found_v upon_o that_o alliance_n and_o upon_o the_o faith_n of_o their_o parent_n p._n see_v that_o the_o promise_n be_v make_v not_o only_o to_o the_o faithful_a parent_n but_o also_o to_o their_o child_n the_o parent_n have_v just_a occasion_n to_o present_v their_o child_n to_o baptism_n to_o the_o end_n they_o may_v have_v thereby_o confirmation_n of_o the_o promise_n which_o be_v make_v as_o well_o to_o their_o child_n as_o to_o themselves_o to_o the_o end_n that_o both_o they_o &_o their_o child_n may_v be_v the_o more_o assure_v and_o comfort_v m._n this_o baptism_n serve_v then_o better_a for_o they_o than_o for_o their_o child_n forsomuch_o as_o the_o child_n know_v not_o yet_o what_o it_o be_v p._n it_o serve_v the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o for_o albeit_o the_o child_n be_v not_o able_a as_o yet_o to_o understand_v what_o baptism_n be_v because_o of_o their_o age_n yet_o be_v they_o capable_a notwithstanding_o already_o through_o the_o good_a pleasure_n of_o god_n of_o the_o alliance_n whereof_o it_o be_v a_o sacrament_n and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n beside_o that_o which_o god_n work_v by_o his_o holy_a spirit_n as_o it_o please_v he_o as_o well_o in_o little_a child_n as_o in_o the_o great_a there_o be_v also_o prayer_n make_v in_o baptism_n for_o the_o little_a child_n found_v upon_o the_o same_o alliance_n which_o be_v not_o vain_a but_o bring_v forth_o his_o fruit_n in_o his_o time_n if_o it_o be_v lawful_a to_o baptise_v the_o child_n of_o infidel_n and_o what_o condition_n be_v require_v in_o they_o which_o do_v present_v they_o m._n sing_v then_o that_o baptism_n of_o child_n be_v found_v upon_o that_o alliance_n it_o be_v not_o lawful_a to_o baptise_v a_o child_n if_o he_o be_v not_o bear_v of_o faithful_a parent_n pet._n thou_o have_v herein_o to_o consider_v that_o there_o must_v be_v heed_n take_v not_o only_o to_o the_o parent_n of_o the_o child_n but_o also_o to_o those_o which_o present_v they_o to_o baptism_n for_o albeit_o that_o a_o child_n be_v bear_v of_o faithful_a parent_n yet_o shall_v it_o not_o be_v lawful_a to_o receive_v he_o to_o baptism_n if_o he_o be_v not_o present_v by_o faithful_a man_n which_o may_v be_v bind_v for_o they_o unto_o that_o whereunto_o baptism_n bind_v the_o faithful_a and_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v sufficient_a to_o accomplish_v the_o promise_n whereby_o they_o bind_v themselves_o to_o the_o church_n concern_v the_o child_n m._n and_o if_o that_o faithful_a man_n shall_v present_v the_o child_n of_o infidel_n and_o that_o they_o shall_v bind_v themselves_o for_o they_o take_v upon_o they_o to_o instruct_v they_o in_o the_o christian_a religion_n as_o if_o they_o themselves_o be_v their_o very_a parent_n shall_v it_o be_v lawful_a to_o baptise_v such_o child_n p._n i_o will_v make_v no_o difficulty_n therein_o provide_v that_o the_o parent_n do_v agree_v thereunto_o chief_o for_o two_o cause_n m._n tell_v i_o the_o first_o p._n it_o be_v that_o forsomuch_o as_o there_o be_v faithful_a surety_n the_o minister_n who_o be_v to_o administer_v the_o baptism_n have_v already_o a_o good_a foundation_n for_o such_o surety_n be_v in_o place_n of_o the_o parent_n provide_v that_o they_o do_v not_o mislike_v of_o it_o but_o have_v give_v they_o charge_n to_o do_v what_o they_o do_v m._n which_o be_v the_o other_o reason_n p._n it_o be_v that_o when_o god_n make_v the_o alliance_n with_o his_o people_n he_o do_v not_o only_o promise_v to_o show_v favour_n and_o mercy_n to_o the_o parent_n and_o child_n a._n even_o to_o the_o second_o and_o third_o generation_n but_o even_o to_o a_o thousand_o generation_n wherefore_o albeit_o that_o the_o near_a parent_n of_o the_o child_n be_v infidel_n yet_o notwithstanding_o their_o infidelity_n may_v not_o shut_v their_o child_n from_o his_o right_a that_o he_o may_v have_v in_o the_o alliance_n of_o god_n by_o the_o mean_a of_o his_o ancient_a father_n and_o predecessor_n m._n but_o see_v it_o be_v so_o according_a to_o the_o true_a discipline_n of_o the_o church_n none_o may_v they_o receive_v a_o man_n to_o present_v a_o child_n to_o baptism_n if_o that_o he_o himself_o be_v not_o receive_v into_o the_o company_n of_o the_o faithful_a and_o be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o be_v pledge_n for_o the_o child_n which_o he_o present_v &_o to_o fulfil_v the_o promise_n which_o he_o make_v for_o he_o p._n it_o shall_v be_v to_o mock_v god_n and_o his_o church_n who_o so_o shall_v do_v otherwise_o for_o man_n have_v not_o accustom_v in_o matter_n of_o much_o less_o importance_n to_o receive_v a_o pledge_n if_o he_o be_v not_o of_o such_o quality_n as_o be_v require_v m._n that_o be_v a_o ordinary_a matter_n p._n what_o reason_n shall_v there_o be_v they_o to_o receive_v in_o matter_n of_o so_o great_a importance_n any_o other_o pledge_n than_o such_o a_o one_o as_o be_v meet_v in_o the_o which_o matter_n there_o be_v a_o very_a solemn_a obligation_n &_o as_o it_o be_v a_o solemn_a oath_n before_o god_n &_o his_o church_n m._n be_v there_o the_o like_o reason_n for_o those_o which_o be_v excommunicate_a as_o there_o be_v for_o those_o which_o be_v as_o yet_o hold_v for_o infidel_n or_o at_o
