submit_v unto_o that_o as_o truth_n how_o ever_o prove_v and_o enforce_v which_o be_v like_a to_o be_v so_o prejudicial_a to_o they_o in_o their_o worldly_a interest_n and_o this_o obstinacy_n be_v to_o be_v look_v upon_o as_o occasion_v by_o their_o carnal_a reason_n before_o name_v and_o the_o ground_n of_o they_o namely_o their_o outward_a worldly_a dignity_n and_o high_a place_n etc._n etc._n but_o not_o as_o certain_o cause_v thereby_o for_o then_o this_o effect_n will_v have_v be_v wrought_v in_o all_o other_o of_o the_o like_a condition_n whereas_o diverse_a as_o have_v be_v observe_v before_o be_v notwithstanding_o the_o strength_n of_o they_o bring_v into_o a_o willing_a submission_n to_o the_o gospel_n and_o so_o thereby_o at_o once_o manifest_v the_o power_n of_o those_o weapon_n for_o the_o subdue_a of_o all_o such_o reason_n and_o tacit_o accuse_v or_o upbraid_v other_o to_o have_v in_o they_o a_o inordinate_a love_n of_o the_o world_n which_o be_v to_o be_v look_v upon_o as_o the_o sole_a cause_n of_o their_o stand_v out_o and_o opposition_n in_o this_o kind_n thus_o far_o we_o have_v speak_v of_o those_o person_n that_o have_v these_o strong_a hold_n that_o be_v some_o more_o than_o ordinary_a carnal_a reason_n which_o they_o use_v for_o strengthen_v themselves_o in_o their_o stand_n out_o and_o opposition_n against_o christ_n as_o they_o have_v relation_n to_o the_o apostle_n and_o their_o time_n when_o yet_o whole_o they_o be_v unconvert_v to_o so_o much_o as_o a_o outward_a profession_n of_o christian_a religion_n it_o remain_v now_o that_o i_o speak_v of_o such_o person_n with_o relation_n to_o our_o time_n as_o they_o be_v among_o we_o outward_a professor_n or_o such_o as_o have_v a_o form_n of_o religion_n but_o for_o the_o most_o part_n deny_v the_o power_n of_o it_o live_v in_o many_o know_a violation_n of_o the_o law_n of_o christ_n as_o many_o great_a and_o rich_a and_o learned_a man_n do_v which_o so_o long_o as_o they_o do_v as_o they_o be_v to_o be_v conceive_v to_o do_v it_o by_o occasion_n of_o these_o strong_a hold_n so_o they_o be_v likewise_o to_o be_v reckon_v as_o person_n that_o be_v yet_o in_o the_o broad_a way_n that_o be_v in_o a_o way_n quite_o contrary_a to_o that_o which_o lead_v to_o heaven_n and_o therefore_o have_v need_n as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o to_o be_v attempt_v by_o those_o weapon_n that_o may_v subdue_v they_o to_o christ_n that_o be_v make_v they_o convert_v and_o become_v christian_n indeed_o but_o yet_o i_o will_v not_o have_v this_o so_o apprehend_v as_o if_o i_o conceive_v either_o that_o all_o such_o person_n be_v only_o formal_a professor_n and_o stranger_n to_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n or_o that_o their_o learning_n or_o riches_n or_o dignity_n and_o great_a place_n in_o the_o world_n be_v necessary_a hindrance_n to_o religion_n and_o the_o thing_n which_o certain_o do_v cause_n they_o to_o be_v such_o as_o for_o the_o most_o part_n they_o be_v there_o be_v i_o doubt_v not_o and_o so_o i_o hope_v still_o will_v be_v some_o such_o as_o we_o before_o menntion_v in_o the_o apostle_n time_n learned_a man_n and_o governor_n and_o counselor_n that_o be_v of_o christ_n true_a retinue_n and_o be_v so_o their_o learning_n wisdom_n etc._n etc._n be_v so_o far_o from_o hinder_v they_o that_o thereby_o they_o be_v enable_v to_o be_v more_o fruitful_a in_o good_a work_n to_o do_v god_n more_o honour_n and_o man_n among_o who_o they_o live_v more_o good_a than_o other_o that_o want_v they_o the_o thing_n that_o we_o intend_v be_v that_o the_o great_a part_n of_o such_o person_n be_v ordinary_o averse_a to_o the_o life_n of_o religion_n or_o power_n of_o godliness_n and_o that_o be_v those_o reason_v chief_o which_o such_o learning_n or_o greatness_n suggest_v to_o they_o that_o be_v the_o cause_n or_o rather_o occasion_n of_o such_o averseness_n the_o former_a part_n have_v be_v in_o effect_n already_o prove_v from_o that_o of_o in_o the_o sea_n only_o to_o take_v their_o pastime_n therein_o and_o such_o be_v those_o way_n of_o vain_a and_o curious_a speculation_n and_o dispute_v and_o exercise_n of_o wit_n about_o curious_a perplex_v and_o unprofitable_a question_n such_o as_o no_o way_n serve_v but_o be_v rather_o hindrance_n unto_o godliness_n in_o which_o many_o learned_a person_n whole_o in_o a_o manner_n employ_v themselves_o without_o bend_v their_o study_n as_o they_o may_v and_o aught_o to_o advance_v the_o power_n of_o religion_n in_o themselves_o and_o other_o and_o last_o such_o be_v those_o course_n of_o worldliness_n of_o heap_v and_o hoard_v up_o treasure_n for_o themselves_o and_o their_o heir_n without_o any_o proportionable_a lay_v they_o out_o in_o private_a or_o public_a good_a work_n fortify_v themselves_o herein_o be_v somewhat_o of_o a_o like_a nature_n with_o those_o before_o allege_v as_o 1._o a_o kind_n of_o antiquity_n and_o prescription_n of_o time_n for_o the_o practise_n of_o they_o they_o be_v thing_n that_o have_v be_v always_o use_v this_o have_v still_o be_v the_o fashion_n of_o the_o gentry_n and_o gallantry_n of_o the_o time_n think_v they_o that_o be_v or_o desire_v to_o be_v account_v for_o such_o and_o scholar_n have_v always_o thus_o exercise_v their_o wit_n and_o express_v their_o learning_n and_o thereby_o attain_v honour_n above_o the_o vulgar_a think_v those_o that_o be_v or_o affect_v to_o be_v eminent_a in_o this_o way_n and_o this_o skill_n have_v be_v the_o practice_n of_o man_n enjoy_v or_o attain_v great_a estate_n in_o the_o world_n thus_o to_o preserve_v they_o to_o themselves_o and_o they_o think_v they_o that_o be_v willing_a to_o take_v the_o same_o course_n 2._o a_o kind_n of_o universality_n these_o be_v fashion_n that_o be_v every_o where_n and_o general_o use_v and_o so_o have_v the_o concur_v approbation_n of_o all_o such_o as_o so_o conform_v to_o they_o for_o the_o warrant_n of_o they_o 3._o a_o kind_n also_o of_o authority_n the_o person_n that_o do_v thus_o be_v not_o mean_a and_o simple_a or_o vulgar_a person_n but_o as_o their_o condition_n speak_v they_o of_o the_o great_a note_n and_o eminency_n in_o the_o world_n and_o ordinary_o most_v repute_v of_o for_o wisdom_n and_o understanding_n and_o to_o all_o these_o it_o may_v be_v they_o may_v add_v the_o experience_n they_o have_v have_v of_o god_n blessing_n they_o in_o these_o course_n enjoy_v it_o may_v be_v a_o uninterrupted_a prosperity_n and_o not_o conflict_v with_o those_o difficulty_n that_o other_o person_n of_o a_o strict_a conversation_n in_o this_o kind_n often_o meet_v with_o 2._o for_o that_o way_n of_o punctual_a and_o exact_a holiness_n commend_v in_o the_o word_n such_o as_o
of_o christ_n have_v live_v in_o one_o or_o mo_z such_o way_n as_o be_v direct_o contrary_a thereunto_o be_v one_o that_o have_v keep_v the_o commandment_n of_o god_n and_o live_v as_o a_o new_a creature_n and_o have_v not_o be_v a_o hearer_n only_o but_o doer_n of_o the_o word_n and_o by_o patient_a continuance_n in_o well_o do_v have_v look_v for_o the_o glorious_a reward_n of_o immortality_n and_o one_o that_o have_v have_v and_o exercise_v those_o divine_a grace_n of_o godliness_n temperance_n etc._n etc._n and_o last_o that_o he_o be_v one_o that_o have_v be_v a_o conqueror_n of_o his_o affection_n and_o all_o worldly_a entanglement_n in_o the_o course_n of_o godliness_n if_o these_o thing_n i_o say_v can_v be_v true_o affirm_v of_o the_o forementioned_a person_n only_o upon_o his_o mourning_n for_o sin_n in_o his_o last_o sicknefle_n or_o strong_o and_o steady_o apply_v christ_n merit_n and_o righteousness_n to_o himself_o then_o there_o will_v be_v good_a reason_n for_o man_n to_o comfort_v themselves_o and_o keep_v up_o their_o confidence_n at_o the_o last_o what_o ever_o course_n of_o sin_n they_o havelive_v in_o or_o what_o ever_o voluntary_a negligence_n and_o remissness_n they_o have_v be_v guilty_a of_o in_o their_o life_n time_n about_o their_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n but_o if_o these_o thing_n be_v as_o sure_o they_o be_v if_o man_n will_v not_o wilful_o shut_v their_o eye_n to_o be_v repute_v 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d thing_n altogether_o absurd_a and_o inconsistent_a to_o imagine_v namely_o that_o he_o that_o have_v constant_o neglect_v the_o law_n of_o god_n in_o his_o life_n time_n be_v one_o that_o have_v live_v as_o a_o new_a creature_n and_o do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n etc._n etc._n because_o he_o mourn_v for_o his_o sin_n at_o last_o and_z applies_z christ_n righteousness_n to_o himself_o then_o certain_o we_o may_v conclude_v that_o fort_n to_o be_v of_o the_o devil_n and_o not_o of_o god_n set_v up_o and_o so_o as_o indeed_o it_o prove_v that_o which_o be_v rather_o intend_v for_o the_o harden_v of_o man_n to_o their_o destruction_n than_o any_o way_n for_o the_o further_a of_o their_o comfort_n and_o salvation_n consider_v therefore_o i_o beseech_v you_o aright_o of_o this_o matter_n and_o let_v no_o practice_n or_o opinion_n how_o common_a or_o general_o receive_v soever_o draw_v outward_a form_n and_o worship_n of_o god_n which_o be_v there_o profess_a and_o maintain_v but_o their_o do_v thus_o be_v not_o proper_o to_o be_v call_v nor_o account_v religion_n that_o be_v as_o i_o have_v already_o say_v a_o voluntary_a thing_n and_o so_o far_o only_o to_o be_v account_v religion_n as_o it_o be_v so_o whosoever_o profess_v any_o religion_n true_a or_o false_a out_o of_o fear_n so_o as_o thereby_o to_o avoid_v those_o loss_n and_o hazard_n which_o be_v threaten_v to_o the_o non-professor_n that_o person_n by_o such_o a_o profession_n be_v to_o be_v account_v to_o act_v rather_o a_o matter_n of_o policy_n then_o of_o religion_n to_o take_v care_n rather_o for_o provide_v for_o his_o outward_a tranquillity_n and_o profit_n in_o this_o world_n then_o for_o his_o inward_a peace_n of_o conscience_n and_o salvation_n in_o the_o next_o indeed_o the_o doctrine_n or_o religion_n of_o the_o papist_n as_o it_o be_v for_o so_o much_o of_o it_o wherein_o it_o differ_v from_o we_o and_o which_o make_v it_o popery_n to_o be_v account_v no_o other_o but_o the_o doctrine_n and_o tradition_n or_o invention_n of_o man_n such_o as_o have_v no_o foundation_n at_o all_o in_o the_o word_n of_o god_n so_o the_o mean_n which_o be_v take_v by_o they_o for_o preserve_v the_o credit_n and_o profession_n thereof_o with_o man_n as_o penalty_n and_o imprisonment_n etc._n etc._n be_v to_o be_v esteem_v no_o other_o but_o dictate_v of_o carnal_a wisdom_n or_o worldly_a policy_n the_o end_n whereof_o be_v not_o to_o provide_v for_o man_n spiritual_a interest_n or_o the_o salvation_n of_o their_o soul_n but_o only_o for_o their_o worldly_a quietness_n and_o advantage_n and_o some_o other_o thing_n especial_o belong_v to_o their_o body_n it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o true_a religion_n which_o be_v a_o voluntary_a thing_n shall_v be_v plant_v in_o man_n mind_n by_o any_o worldly_a force_n or_o fear_n nor_o consequent_o that_o the_o good_a of_o man_n soul_n which_o whole_o depend_v thereon_o shall_v be_v any_o thing_n advance_v by_o any_o such_o mean_n as_o be_v make_v use_n of_o in_o that_o way_n so_o as_o either_o to_o begin_v or_o preserve_v in_o man_n such_o a_o profession_n of_o it_o this_o then_o show_v partly_o the_o folly_n and_o partly_o the_o cruelty_n of_o all_o such_o politician_n for_o so_o they_o account_v themselves_o and_o there_o be_v many_o such_o in_o the_o world_n other_o as_o well_o as_o papist_n that_o make_v use_v of_o these_o weapon_n of_o worldly_a terror_n or_o penalty_n in_o case_n of_o religion_n so_o as_o thereby_o to_o engage_v man_n in_o such_o or_o such_o a_o profession_n or_o in_o hold_v such_o opinion_n as_o they_o themselves_o approve_v of_o for_o the_o religion_n or_o opinion_n that_o be_v by_o this_o mean_v attempt_v to_o be_v persuade_v on_o other_o must_v be_v necessary_o either_o true_a or_o false_a 1._o if_o the_o religion_n or_o opinion_n be_v indeed_o true_a which_o be_v thus_o attempt_v to_o be_v fasten_v upon_o other_o the_o party_n on_o who_o this_o attempt_n be_v make_v must_v be_v suppose_v hereupon_o either_o to_o embrace_v it_o or_o still_o notwithstanding_o these_o penalty_n that_o be_v use_v to_o stand_v out_o and_o oppose_v it_o if_o the_o former_a be_v suppose_v then_o consider_v those_o mean_n can_v have_v no_o force_n at_o all_o to_o convince_v his_o judgement_n or_o better_a his_o understanding_n it_o must_v needs_o be_v conceive_v that_o his_o embrace_v such_o a_o religion_n or_o opinion_n hereupon_o be_v only_o a_o act_n of_o carnal_a fear_n make_v he_o to_o profess_v that_o as_o true_a which_o though_o true_a in_o itself_o be_v false_a in_o his_o judgement_n and_o apprehension_n and_o so_o such_o a_o profess_v though_o it_o be_v of_o the_o truth_n be_v a_o do_v of_o a_o thing_n against_o his_o conscience_n and_o so_o a_o act_n of_o hypocrisy_n and_o consequent_o that_o which_o
be_v to_o be_v repute_v contrary_a to_o the_o forementioned_a and_o many_o other_o corruption_n consist_v in_o walk_v after_o the_o spirit_n 6.18_o rom._n 8.1.8.15_o col._n 3.2_o phil._n 3.20_o 1_o cor._n 10.31_o 1_o tim._n 6.18_o and_o mortify_v the_o deed_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o have_v our_o mind_n and_o meditation_n in_o heaven_n and_o do_v all_o to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o be_v rich_a in_o good_a work_n in_o brief_a such_o as_o consist_v in_o a_o deliberate_a and_o exact_a do_v the_o will_n of_o god_n in_o every_o thing_n and_o for_o that_o purpose_n a_o daily_o consult_v with_o his_o word_n and_o make_v use_n of_o those_o help_n of_o prayer_n meditation_n and_o christian_a conference_n commend_v to_o we_o therein_o as_o necessary_a for_o that_o end_n this_o way_n i_o say_v be_v that_o which_o such_o person_n will_v be_v ready_a to_o asperse_v and_o calumniate_v at_o least_o in_o those_o who_o seem_v to_o be_v frequenter_n of_o it_o or_o to_o draw_v other_o thereunto_o in_o the_o like_a manner_n as_o the_o unconvert_v heathen_a do_v heretofore_o the_o outward_a profession_n of_o christian_a religion_n that_o be_v first_o as_o some_o new_a device_n invent_v by_o some_o melancholy_a or_o pragmatical_a and_o overbusy_a or_o precise_a person_n such_o as_o trouble_v themselves_o with_o more_o than_o become_v they_o and_o affect_v to_o be_v note_v for_o singularity_n have_v not_o the_o modesty_n to_o be_v content_a with_o and_o conform_v themselves_o to_o that_o which_o be_v the_o common_a and_o ordinary_a practice_n of_o the_o most_o in_o this_o kind_n second_o as_o a_o way_n if_o at_o all_o observe_v yet_o only_o in_o a_o manner_n by_o simple_a and_o obscure_a person_n such_o as_o do_v not_o or_o can_v well_o understand_v the_o extent_n of_o their_o privilege_n and_o christian_a liberty_n in_o this_o kind_n and_o therefore_o it_o can_v but_o be_v very_o unfit_a for_o person_n of_o such_o quality_n as_o they_o be_v to_o take_v they_o herein_o for_o their_o example_n if_o either_o be_v to_o conform_v to_o other_o it_o be_v fit_a that_o these_o latter_a that_o be_v so_o far_o below_o they_o come_v up_o to_o they_o and_o not_o they_o descend_v to_o these_o three_o as_o a_o way_n most_o unpleasing_a and_o uncomfortable_a for_o man_n whole_o to_o limit_v themselves_o to_o the_o law_n of_o god_n to_o speak_v or_o think_v or_o do_v nothing_o but_o what_o it_o require_v or_o allow_v to_o spend_v a_o great_a part_n of_o their_o time_n in_o prayer_n and_o meditation_n and_o christian_a discourse_n out_o of_o the_o word_n for_o edify_v themselves_o in_o godliness_n to_o lay_v out_o their_o mean_n which_o shall_v make_v they_o and_o their_o heir_n live_v in_o honour_n and_o esteem_v in_o the_o world_n upon_o stranger_n or_o such_o as_o they_o have_v no_o particular_a obligation_n to_o these_o be_v thing_n wherein_o as_o a_o great_a part_n of_o religion_n consist_v so_o they_o be_v ordinary_o look_v upon_o by_o such_o person_n as_o very_o harsh_a and_o unpleasant_a course_n and_o such_o as_o be_v very_o unsuitable_a with_o those_o end_n of_o enjoy_v worldly_a repute_n and_o profit_n and_o pleasure_n which_o they_o have_v propose_v to_o themselves_o and_o therefore_o be_v so_o far_o the_o more_o opposite_a to_o they_o four_o there_o be_v some_o of_o the_o law_n of_o christ_n and_o which_o these_o person_n sufficient_o know_v to_o be_v such_o yet_o if_o we_o may_v judge_v as_o i_o know_v not_o but_o we_o may_v by_o their_o avow_a &_o deliberate_a practice_n in_o this_o kind_n be_v look_v upon_o by_o they_o as_o thing_n below_o they_o that_o be_v as_o disgraceful_a and_o unworthy_a for_o they_o to_o observe_v namely_o those_o publish_v touch_v the_o abstain_v from_o all_o revenge_n and_o contest_v with_o other_o instead_o where_o of_o be_v commend_v to_o we_o pray_v and_o blessing_n 9.44_o matth._n 9.44_o and_o do_v good_a to_o those_o that_o hate_n or_o hurt_v we_o and_o turn_v the_o other_o cheek_n to_o he_o that_o have_v smite_v we_o rather_o then_o by_o our_o opposition_n to_o add_v fuel_n to_o his_o enmity_n and_o thereby_o increase_v the_o contention_n who_o be_v there_o almost_o especial_o of_o these_o that_o be_v or_o will_v be_v account_v the_o gallant_n of_o the_o time_n that_o do_v not_o take_v a_o quite_o contrary_a course_n that_o be_v not_o apt_a to_o steem_z these_o thing_n rather_o as_o act_n of_o baseness_n and_o pusillanimity_n then_o of_o any_o hoâ—our_n though_o in_o so_o do_v they_o charge_v â—he_v most_o gallant_a and_o honourable_a person_n â—hat_n ever_o be_v on_o earth_n with_o be_v guilty_a of_o such_o baseness_n both_o in_o his_o doctrine_n and_o example_n namely_o our_o bless_a saviour_n these_o be_v those_o strong_a hold_v whereby_o such_o person_n come_v to_o be_v fortify_v in_o their_o sin_n make_v they_o resolute_o go_v on_o all_o their_o day_n in_o a_o wilful_a breach_n of_o some_o or_o more_o of_o the_o know_a law_n of_o christ_n and_o to_o all_o these_o may_v be_v add_v that_o which_o be_v indeed_o the_o main_a strength_n and_o supporter_n of_o all_o these_o reason_n in_o they_o and_o of_o that_o carelessness_n or_o remissness_n in_o observe_v the_o law_n of_o christ_n which_o flow_v from_o thence_o that_o be_v a_o secret_a inward_a persuasion_n derive_v to_o they_o from_o some_o common_a but_o unsound_a doctrine_n namely_o touch_v the_o unnecessarinesse_n of_o such_o precise_a and_o universal_a exact_a walk_v and_o conform_v ourselves_o to_o the_o word_n that_o man_n may_v be_v save_v and_o come_v to_o heaven_n ordinary_o without_o it_o that_o to_o rely_v on_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n to_o apprehend_v and_o apply_v his_o righteousness_n to_o ourselves_o which_o be_v that_o formality_n of_o justify_v faith_n which_o some_o teach_v and_o which_o sure_o for_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o thing_n may_v be_v exhibit_v in_o the_o last_o sickness_n and_o that_o by_o those_o that_o for_o all_o the_o time_n before_o have_v constant_o neglect_v the_o do_v of_o the_o forementioned_a duty_n that_o this_o be_v sufficient_a for_o secure_v a_o man_n of_o salvation_n this_o be_v that_o common_a great_a engine_n or_o fortress_n whereby_o such_o person_n and_o all_o other_o in_o a_o manner_n that_o be_v possess_v of_o it_o become_v impregnable_a in_o their_o hold_n their_o subdue_a being_n in_o a_o sort_n impossible_a and_o so_o they_o themselves_o in_o this_o respect_n in_o a_o more_o desperate_a condition_n than_o those_o of_o the_o ancient_a gentile_n the_o apostle_n have_v to_o deal_v with_o so_o long_o as_o it_o remain_v undemolisht_a in_o they_o and_o therefore_o in_o the_o first_o place_n for_o pull_v down_o all_o the_o strong_a hold_v before_o mention_v the_o attempt_n must_v be_v make_v here_o against_o this_o which_o pretend_v to_o be_v build_v upon_o and_o have_v for_o its_o ground_n the_o word_n itself_o and_o that_o must_v be_v by_o show_v that_o
