A62474 The histories of the gunpowder-treason and the massacre at Paris together with a discourse concerning the original of the Powder-Plot; proving it not to be the contrivance of Cecill, as is affirmed by the Papists, but that both the Jesuits and the Pope himself were privy to it. agreement_n in_o doctrine_n with_o the_o ancient_a church_n we_o may_v hence_o also_o conclude_v whether_o this_o church_n of_o rome_n have_v continue_v a_o true_a and_o faithful_a church_n of_o here_o also_o such_o prince_n as_o have_v escape_v these_o corruption_n will_v again_o subject_v their_o neck_n to_o the_o roman_a yoke_n may_v see_v what_o a_o snare_n they_o involve_v themselves_o contrary_a when_o they_o have_v jar_v with_o the_o holy_a see_v they_o have_v be_v infest_a with_o boisterous_a storm_n and_o tempest_n here_o i_o say_v if_o this_o be_v true_a they_o may_v perceive_v cordial_a christian_n and_o that_o be_v the_o scandal_n of_o these_o principle_n and_o practice_n the_o occasion_n which_o thereby_o be_v give_v to_o those_o who_o be_v not_o well_o acquaint_v with_o the_o doctrine_n and_o practice_n of_o the_o ancient_a genuine_a christian_n nor_o have_v well_o consider_v the_o great_a evidence_n of_o the_o truth_n and_o excellence_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n to_o suspect_v it_o to_o be_v no_o other_o than_o what_o they_o apprehend_v it_o to_o be_v in_o the_o life_n and_o action_n of_o such_o spurious_a professor_n of_o it_o viz._n a_o mere_a we_o consider_v the_o present_a growth_n of_o atheism_n and_o infidelity_n among_o we_o and_o trace_v it_o to_o its_o root_n and_o original_a we_o shall_v find_v it_o all_o to_o be_v of_o a_o over_o of_o thuanus_n for_o the_o story_n of_o the_o combination_n have_v perceive_v something_o of_o the_o unhappy_a issue_n of_o her_o neighbour_n persecution_n of_o the_o professor_n of_o that_o reform_a religion_n which_o she_o happy_o establish_v and_o defend_v i_o begin_v to_o perceive_v something_o of_o that_o distinguish_a providence_n which_o be_v very_o observable_a and_o remarkable_a in_o the_o ensue_a part_n of_o the_o discourse_n to_o sect._n 61._o wherefore_o have_v cursory_o run_v over_o some_o of_o the_o principal_a part_n of_o that_o story_n and_o satisfy_v myself_o that_o this_o defection_n from_o the_o christian_a doctrine_n and_o manner_n have_v be_v foretell_v by_o the_o first_o propagator_n of_o the_o christian_a faith_n in_o that_o manner_n as_o i_o think_v will_v not_o only_o do_v much_o to_o the_o remove_n of_o the_o scandal_n but_o moreover_o afford_v no_o inconsiderable_a evidence_n to_o the_o truth_n of_o christianity_n itself_o but_o that_o i_o see_v will_v be_v too_o long_o for_o this_o place_n and_o time_n but_o i_o be_o well_o assure_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o what_o i_o say_v and_o doubt_v not_o but_o ere_o long_o it_o will_v be_v make_v manifest_a 3._o there_o be_v one_o cause_n more_o from_o whence_o man_n may_v act_v contrary_a to_o christianity_n and_o that_o in_o the_o high_a degree_n and_o yet_o without_o the_o disbelief_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o it_o in_o general_a or_o of_o any_o particular_a doctrine_n of_o it_o and_o that_o be_v through_o desperation_n the_o case_n of_o some_o who_o believe_v and_o tremble_v ja._n 2.19_o when_o man_n by_o frequency_n and_o long_a continuance_n in_o sin_n against_o the_o light_n and_o check_n of_o conscience_n have_v sin_v themselves_o into_o this_o desperation_n this_o be_v often_o a_o occasion_n to_o they_o to_o a_o further_a progress_n in_o wickedness_n even_o to_o the_o height_n of_o the_o most_o enormous_a sin_n though_o they_o neither_o do_v nor_o can_v doubt_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n no_o more_o than_o do_v the_o devil_n who_o believe_v and_o tremble_v for_o there_o be_v no_o sin_n which_o be_v not_o consistent_a with_o a_o full_a persuasion_n of_o it_o in_o such_o as_o be_v once_o become_v desperate_a indeed_o even_o scoff_v at_o and_o abuse_v of_o religion_n to_o evil_a end_n be_v no_o certain_a argument_n of_o unbelief_n in_o such_o as_o use_v they_o there_o may_v be_v and_o be_v false_a professor_n of_o atheism_n and_o infidelity_n as_o well_o as_o of_o religion_n itself_o there_o be_v more_o or_o less_o of_o humane_a frailty_n in_o all_o too_o many_o sin_n against_o knowledge_n and_o some_o thereby_o sin_n themselves_o into_o despair_n and_o then_o run_v on_o into_o all_o wickedness_n against_o that_o belief_n which_o they_o will_v fain_o cast_v off_o if_o they_o can_v and_o there_o be_v so_o many_o cause_n and_o occasion_n of_o sin_n beside_o unbelief_n that_o they_o can_v in_o reason_n be_v attribute_v to_o it_o alone_o 4._o and_o last_o consider_v the_o strange_a wild_a fancy_n which_o we_o often_o see_v man_n learned_a man_n and_o otherwise_o sober_a man_n fall_v into_o consider_v the_o great_a force_n &_o prevalence_n that_o the_o will_n &_o affection_n have_v to_o bias_n blind_a and_o corrupt_v the_o judgement_n consider_v the_o power_n and_o malice_n and_o subtlety_n that_o according_a to_o the_o scripture_n the_o god_n of_o this_o world_n have_v to_o blind_a man_n mind_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o believe_v the_o gospel_n of_o truth_n it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v doubt_v but_o such_o there_o be_v who_o do_v not_o believe_v it_o but_o then_o the_o very_a same_o reason_n may_v satisfy_v we_o what_o little_a credit_n there_o be_v to_o be_v give_v to_o the_o opinion_n of_o such_o man_n without_o better_a reason_n and_o yet_o i_o know_v and_o have_v find_v by_o experience_n that_o some_o professor_n of_o infidelity_n have_v no_o better_a reason_n than_o this_o they_o be_v like_o man_n in_o a_o panic_n fear_n where_o every_o one_o be_v afraid_a but_o none_o know_v the_o cause_n only_o he_o suppose_v the_o rest_n do_v and_o be_v so_o much_o the_o more_o afraid_a by_o how_o much_o the_o more_o in_o number_n they_o be_v who_o he_o suppose_v to_o be_v in_o the_o same_o passion_n with_o himself_o so_o many_o who_o have_v no_o reason_n at_o all_o for_o their_o unbelief_n yet_o suppose_v other_o have_v and_o will_v fain_o be_v think_v as_o wise_a as_o they_o this_o i_o think_v necessary_a to_o add_v as_o a_o antidote_n against_o that_o poison_n which_o some_o may_v suck_v from_o those_o scandalous_a practice_n and_o action_n which_o have_v be_v here_o relate_v finis_fw-la
