promise_v to_o do_v so_o in_o the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n sometime_o he_o do_v it_o not_o so_o much_o to_o reward_v good_a man_n for_o temporal_a thing_n be_v not_o the_o proper_a reward_n of_o his_o cross_n to_o expect_v suffering_n and_o persecution_n for_o his_o name_n sake_n and_o then_o we_o must_v be_v content_v to_o want_v food_n and_o raiment_n to_o part_v with_o house_n and_o land_n temporal_a punishment_n against_o sin_n bad_a man_n be_v very_o often_o punish_v in_o this_o world_n when_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o divine_a providence_n see_v fit_a and_o they_o very_o often_o escape_v too_o and_o be_v much_o more_o prosperous_a than_o good_a man_n be_v here_o that_o there_o be_v no_o threaten_v in_o the_o gospel_n to_o restrain_v the_o impiety_n of_o man_n but_o only_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o other_o world_n and_o a_o future_a judgement_n and_o if_o you_o take_v away_o these_o you_o destroy_v the_o gospel_n of_o our_o saviour_n 2._o many_o of_o our_o saviour_n law_n be_v found_v on_o the_o supposition_n of_o a_o future_a judgement_n and_o be_v extreme_o unreasonable_a if_o there_o be_v no_o reward_n or_o punishment_n after_o this_o life_n that_o if_o we_o will_v but_o allow_v he_o the_o ordinary_a prudence_n of_o a_o lawgiver_n a_o future_a judgement_n must_v be_v the_o foundation_n of_o his_o religion_n if_o there_o be_v no_o other_o life_n after_o this_o the_o only_a rule_n of_o our_o action_n will_v be_v to_o live_v as_o long_o and_o to_o enjoy_v as_o much_o of_o this_o world_n as_o we_o can_v but_o christian_a religion_n in_o many_o case_n will_v not_o allow_v of_o this_o and_o therefore_o be_v no_o religion_n for_o this_o world_n be_v there_o not_o another_o world_n to_o follow_v to_o begin_v with_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o this_o world_n how_o many_o restraint_n do_v the_o christian_a religion_n lie_v on_o we_o to_o lessen_v the_o pleasure_n and_o satisfaction_n of_o this_o life_n it_o teach_v we_o a_o great_a indifferency_n to_o all_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n but_o how_o unreasonable_a be_v that_o if_o this_o world_n be_v our_o only_a place_n of_o happiness_n for_o who_o can_v be_v indifferent_a whether_o he_o be_v happy_a consistent_a with_o preserve_v our_o health_n and_o prolong_v our_o life_n if_o we_o have_v no_o expectation_n after_o death_n nay_o if_o man_n be_v content_v to_o live_v a_o short_a and_o a_o merry_a life_n what_o hurt_n be_v there_o in_o it_o if_o death_n put_v a_o end_n to_o they_o it_o forbid_v we_o to_o lay_v up_o for_o ourselves_o treasure_n on_o earth_n which_o be_v a_o strange_a command_n be_v there_o not_o great_a treasure_n to_o be_v expect_v in_o heaven_n it_o forbid_v earthly_a pride_n and_o ambition_n a_o affectation_n of_o secular_a honour_n and_o power_n but_o why_o must_v we_o submit_v to_o meanness_n and_o contempt_n in_o this_o world_n if_o this_o be_v the_o only_a scene_n of_o action_n we_o shall_v ever_o be_v concern_v in_o for_o a_o mean_a and_o base_a spirit_n be_v be_v reward_v be_v to_o be_v patient_o miserable_a and_o that_o be_v stupidity_n and_o folly_n but_o to_o have_v our_o conversation_n in_o heaven_n to_o live_v upon_o the_o hope_n of_o unseen_a thing_n be_v madness_n and_o distraction_n if_o there_o be_v no_o heaven_n no_o unseen_a thing_n for_o we_o the_o law_n of_o our_o saviour_n require_v we_o in_o some_o case_n to_o sacrifice_v the_o dear_a interest_n we_o have_v in_o this_o world_n and_o life_n itself_o for_o his_o sake_n which_o be_v a_o senseless_a and_o unreasonable_a command_n if_o he_o do_v not_o intend_v to_o bestow_v a_o better_a life_n on_o we_o if_o there_o be_v no_o other_o life_n after_o this_o no_o wise_a man_n will_v forfeit_v more_o for_o any_o religion_n than_o it_o be_v worth_a in_o this_o world_n and_o that_o will_v reach_v but_o a_o little_a way_n in_o suffer_v nor_o be_v our_o saviour_n so_o unreasonable_a as_o to_o require_v it_o upon_o these_o term_n but_o tell_v we_o plain_o whosoever_o will_v and_o virtue_n many_o time_n as_o mean_v and_o contemptible_a as_o injustice_n and_o oppression_n can_v make_v it_o that_o it_o will_v be_v of_o great_a use_n to_o we_o sometime_o to_o remove_v the_o scene_n from_o this_o world_n to_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n when_o all_o mankind_n shall_v appear_v together_o the_o great_a appearance_n that_o ever_o be_v and_o therefore_o it_o be_v much_o more_o considerable_a how_o we_o shall_v appear_v then_o than_o how_o we_o appear_v in_o this_o world_n but_o the_o enquiry_n here_o be_v why_o god_n judge_v all_o the_o world_n at_o once_o and_o summon_v all_o mankind_n together_o to_o receive_v their_o final_a sentence_n now_o that_o god_n will_v do_v so_o be_v very_o plain_a why_o he_o do_v it_o he_o have_v not_o tell_v we_o but_o whoever_o more_o effectual_a method_n to_o supply_v those_o defect_n notwithstanding_o all_o these_o natural_a reward_n of_o virtue_n good_a man_n while_o they_o live_v intermix_v with_o the_o wicked_a may_v be_v oppress_v by_o they_o and_o make_v as_o miserable_a as_o all_o external_a calamity_n and_o suffering_n can_v make_v they_o and_o be_v in_o great_a danger_n oâ—_n be_v so_o unless_o a_o watchful_a providence_n secure_v they_o the_o practice_n and_o exercise_v of_o virtue_n will_v make_v man_n happy_a both_o in_o soul_n and_o body_n where_o the_o natural_a effect_n of_o virtue_n be_v not_o hinder_v and_o interrupt_v by_o external_a violence_n but_o where_o they_o be_v a_o good_a man_n though_o he_o can_v be_v call_v miserable_a yet_o may_v be_v far_o enough_o from_o be_v happy_a nay_o cautious_a sinner_n and_o such_o there_o be_v in_o the_o world_n may_v be_v very_o wicked_a without_o injure_v his_o health_n or_o shorten_v his_o life_n and_o as_o infamous_a as_o sin_n be_v this_o may_v be_v so_o conceal_v and_o palliate_v by_o external_a honour_n that_o the_o sinner_n shall_v not_o feel_v it_o nor_o bad_a man_n see_v it_o nor_o good_a man_n dare_v take_v notice_n of_o it_o so_o that_o these_o natural_a reward_n and_o punishment_n which_o god_n have_v entail_v on_o virtue_n and_o vice_n may_v either_o whole_o or_o in_o a_o great_a measure_n be_v defeat_v by_o the_o great_a external_a calamity_n of_o good_a man_n and_o by_o the_o great_a prosperity_n of_o the_o wicked_a and_o therefore_o if_o it_o be_v god_n will_n that_o good_a man_n shall_v be_v happy_a and_o the_o wicked_a miserable_a as_o these_o natural_a reward_n and_o punishment_n prove_v that_o it_o be_v unless_o he_o will_v suffer_v himself_o to_o be_v defeat_v in_o the_o very_a end_n for_o which_o he_o make_v man_n which_o we_o can_v never_o suppose_v of_o so_o infinite_o wise_a and_o powerful_a a_o be_v he_o must_v at_o least_o in_o all_o such_o case_n interpose_v by_o his_o providence_n for_o good_a man_n live_v among_o the_o bad_a expose_v to_o all_o the_o accident_n of_o mortality_n and_o injury_n of_o man_n though_o these_o natural_a reward_n and_o punishment_n be_v a_o great_a instrument_n of_o providence_n still_o yet_o it_o be_v necessary_a god_n shall_v take_v good_a man_n into_o his_o more_o particular_a care_n in_o this_o world_n and_o translate_v they_o to_o some_o more_o perfect_a state_n of_o happiness_n since_o as_o the_o world_n now_o be_v it_o be_v impossible_a a_o divine_a virtue_n shall_v receive_v its_o complete_a reward_n and_o recompense_n here_o foe_o that_o it_o seem_v as_o demonstrable_a to_o i_o that_o god_n govern_v this_o world_n at_o present_a and_o will_v judge_v we_o in_o the_o next_o as_o that_o he_o have_v make_v a_o essential_a difference_n between_o virtue_n and_o vice_n and_o entail_v natural_a reward_n and_o punishment_n on_o they_o which_o be_v of_o no_o use_n but_o for_o the_o government_n of_o the_o world_n and_o as_o thing_n now_o be_v can_v in_o many_o instance_n attain_v that_o end_n without_o a_o providence_n in_o this_o world_n and_o a_o judgement_n in_o the_o next_o 6._o these_o natural_a reward_n and_o punishment_n of_o virtue_n and_o vice_n be_v a_o natural_a proof_n and_o evidence_n of_o the_o future_a reward_n and_o punishment_n of_o good_a and_o bad_a man_n or_o of_o a_o future_a judgement_n and_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o be_v plain_a because_o piety_n and_o virtue_n be_v a_o happy_a nature_n and_o sin_n and_o vice_n a_o miserable_a nature_n and_o therefore_o at_o one_o time_n or_o other_o virtue_n must_v make_v man_n happy_a and_o vice_n miserable_a nature_n will_v act_v like_o itself_o and_o produce_v its_o proper_a effect_n unless_o it_o be_v hinder_v by_o some_o external_a force_n and_o whenever_o that_o force_n be_v remove_v it_o will_v return_v to_o itself_o again_o though_o the_o nature_n of_o piety_n and_o virtue_n be_v such_o as_o to_o make_v a_o reasonable_a court_v and_o flatter_v our_o sense_n and_o draw_v off_o our_o mind_n from_o the_o spiritual_a delight_n of_o virtue_n and_o religion_n which_o be_v the_o proper_a and_o natural_a delight_n of_o a_o reasonable_a spirit_n and_o at_o best_o extreme_o dull_a the_o spiritual_a sensation_n and_o relish_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o make_v the_o delight_n of_o religion_n faint_a and_o languid_a which_o must_v proportionable_o abate_v our_o spiritual_a pleasure_n these_o mortal_a body_n want_v a_o great_a many_o necessary_n and_o convenience_n of_o life_n the_o care_n of_o which_o employ_v most_o of_o our_o thought_n and_o time_n and_o though_o our_o
secular_a affair_n will_v furnish_v we_o with_o frequent_a opportunity_n of_o exercise_v great_a and_o excellent_a virtue_n yet_o the_o world_n be_v apt_a to_o gain_v too_o much_o upon_o we_o by_o our_o constant_a conversation_n with_o it_o and_o as_o flesh_n and_o sense_n prevail_v so_o the_o spirit_n lose_v and_o if_o this_o do_v not_o defile_v the_o soul_n with_o worldly_a lust_n yet_o it_o take_v we_o off_o very_o much_o from_o the_o frequent_a and_o vigorous_a act_n of_o a_o divine_a life_n which_o be_v the_o true_a happiness_n of_o a_o reasonable_a soul_n but_o then_o these_o mortal_a body_n be_v expose_v to_o great_a want_n and_o suffering_n bad_a man_n be_v injurious_a and_o meekness_n and_o patience_n and_o such_o tame_a and_o gentle_a virtue_n encourage_v their_o injury_n nay_o true_a piety_n and_o religion_n itself_o may_v be_v the_o cause_n and_o reason_n of_o our_o suffering_n and_o when_o the_o body_n suffer_v the_o soul_n suffer_v with_o it_o and_o this_o stifle_v the_o present_a pleasure_n and_o satisfaction_n of_o virtue_n and_o nothing_o can_v support_v the_o spirit_n of_o good_a man_n under_o such_o suffering_n but_o the_o future_a expectation_n of_o great_a reward_n so_o that_o in_o this_o state_n virtue_n alone_o be_v not_o a_o sufficient_a reward_n to_o itself_o for_o either_o its_o pleasure_n be_v but_o faint_a and_o languid_a or_o its_o suffering_n overbalance_n its_o pleasure_n but_o yet_o if_o we_o will_v but_o suppose_v a_o good_a man_n remove_v into_o such_o a_o state_n where_o virtue_n and_o piety_n will_v have_v its_o free_a unrestrained_a undisturbed_a exercise_n and_o can_v produce_v its_o natural_a effect_n without_o any_o hindrance_n and_o interruption_n than_o it_o be_v demonstrable_a that_o piety_n and_o virtue_n must_v make_v thought_n when_o bad_a man_n can_v no_o long_o injure_v we_o when_o our_o soul_n be_v set_v at_o liberty_n to_o exercise_v all_o their_o rational_a power_n when_o we_o remove_v into_o a_o world_n of_o spirit_n and_o converse_v only_o with_o spiritual_a object_n which_o will_v as_o strong_o affect_v our_o mind_n as_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n do_v our_o sense_n than_o virtue_n will_v and_o must_v be_v a_o reward_n unto_o itself_o then_o the_o pleasure_n of_o wisdom_n and_o knowledge_n and_o divine_a passion_n will_v be_v ravish_v and_o transport_v thus_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n the_o nature_n of_o vice_n be_v such_o as_o to_o make_v a_o reasonable_a creature_n miserable_a but_o yet_o a_o great_a prosperity_n in_o this_o world_n and_o a_o confluence_n of_o all_o sensual_a enjoyment_n may_v at_o present_a palliate_v and_o dissemble_v or_o suspend_v these_o malignant_a influence_n of_o a_o vicious_a nature_n may_v make_v man_n unsensible_a of_o the_o want_n of_o true_a rational_a and_o divine_a pleasure_n or_o of_o the_o pain_n and_o disturbance_n of_o sinful_a passion_n may_v bind_v up_o our_o reason_n and_o conscience_n and_o give_v such_o a_o empire_n and_o predominancy_n to_o sense_n that_o we_o can_v neither_o understand_v nor_o relish_v any_o other_o pleasure_n but_o those_o of_o the_o body_n and_o think_v ourselves_o complete_o happy_a while_o we_o have_v these_o but_o if_o we_o will_v suppose_v such_o man_n strip_v of_o flesh_n and_o sense_n thrust_v out_o of_o these_o body_n and_o out_o of_o this_o world_n and_o there_o be_v a_o end_n of_o their_o sensual_a happiness_n and_o a_o sensualized_a soul_n be_v capable_a of_o no_o other_o and_o when_o all_o other_o object_n be_v remove_v and_o such_o sinful_a and_o distemper_a mind_n be_v bring_v acquaint_v with_o themselves_o when_o the_o virtue_n of_o these_o opiate_n be_v spend_v and_o the_o soul_n recover_v its_o sense_n again_o than_o every_o vicious_a passion_n prove_v a_o fury_n then_o gild_n and_o shame_n and_o fear_n and_o despair_n and_o rage_a remorse_n act_v their_o several_a tragedy_n in_o such_o a_o miserable_a soul_n this_o be_v the_o true_a nature_n of_o sinful_a and_o disorder_a passion_n and_o thus_o they_o must_v do_v when_o they_o act_v like_o themselves_o and_o thus_o they_o will_v do_v when_o they_o be_v let_v loose_a upon_o we_o in_o the_o other_o world_n so_o that_o the_o natural_a reward_n and_o punishment_n of_o virtue_n and_o vice_n that_o virtue_n in_o its_o own_o nature_n be_v the_o life_n the_o happiness_n vice_n the_o death_n and_o misery_n of_o a_o reasonable_a soul_n do_v necessary_o prove_v that_o if_o good_a and_o bad_a man_n remove_v out_o of_o this_o world_n of_o sense_n into_o a_o world_n of_o spirit_n piety_n and_o virtue_n must_v make_v man_n happy_a and_o vice_n miserable_a and_o we_o may_v take_v it_o for_o grant_v that_o god_n will_v reward_v a_o happy_a and_o punish_v a_o miserable_a nature_n 7._o these_o natural_a reward_n and_o punishment_n of_o virtue_n and_o vice_n be_v a_o great_a instrument_n of_o providence_n as_o they_o be_v a_o most_o effectual_a antidote_n and_o remedy_n against_o superstition_n which_o corrupt_v the_o manner_n of_o man_n and_o debauch_n the_o world_n by_o superstition_n i_o mean_v all_o those_o hypocritical_a art_n of_o appease_v god_n and_o procure_v his_o favour_n without_o obey_v his_o law_n or_o reform_v our_o sin_n infinite_a such_o superstition_n have_v be_v invent_v by_o heathen_n by_o jew_n by_o christian_n themselves_o especial_o by_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n which_o abound_v with_o they_o now_o these_o superstition_n do_v not_o only_o spoil_v all_o religion_n but_o corrupt_a man_n life_n and_o give_v they_o great_a security_n and_o impudence_n in_o sin_v which_o overturn_v the_o good_a government_n of_o the_o world_n for_o while_o man_n persuade_v themselves_o that_o they_o may_v live_v as_o they_o list_v and_o commit_v what_o villainy_n they_o please_v and_o yet_o escape_v the_o wrath_n and_o vengeance_n nay_o obtain_v the_o favour_n of_o god_n both_o in_o this_o world_n and_o in_o the_o next_o it_o set_v they_o free_a from_o all_o law_n and_o government_n and_o leave_v no_o restraint_n on_o they_o but_o what_o the_o law_n of_o man_n and_o the_o rod_n and_o axe_n of_o prince_n lay_v on_o they_o but_o when_o man_n consider_v that_o god_n have_v so_o contrive_v the_o nature_n of_o thing_n that_o virtue_n must_v make_v man_n happy_a and_o vice_n miserable_a they_o can_v imagine_v that_o god_n can_v be_v reconcile_v to_o wicked_a man_n unless_o they_o think_v that_o he_o will_v alter_v the_o nature_n of_o virtue_n and_o vice_n for_o they_o the_o reward_n and_o punishment_n the_o happiness_n and_o misery_n of_o good_a and_o bad_a man_n be_v not_o now_o arbitrary_a thing_n at_o the_o disposal_n of_o god_n arbitrary_a will_n and_o pleasure_n but_o god_n must_v new_o make_v man_n again_o to_o make_v good_a man_n miserable_a and_o bad_a man_n happy_a they_o may_v as_o well_o expect_v ease_n in_o a_o fit_a of_o the_o gout_n or_o stone_n or_o health_n in_o the_o paroxysm_n of_o a_o favour_n spirit_n of_o christianity_n as_o it_o be_v not_o will_v be_v as_o reconcileable_a with_o this_o parable_n as_o the_o execution_n of_o any_o other_o malefactor_n be_v this_o may_v be_v do_v without_o destroy_v the_o wheat_n nay_o in_o some_o case_n the_o wheat_n may_v be_v preserve_v by_o it_o for_o the_o punishment_n and_o execution_n of_o some_o bad_a man_n be_v necessary_a to_o preserve_v the_o innocent_a but_o when_o the_o tare_n be_v more_o than_o the_o wheat_n grow_v close_o together_o and_o be_v entangle_v in_o each_o other_o as_o the_o interest_n of_o good_a and_o bad_a man_n be_v and_o comfort_n of_o this_o present_a life_n this_o may_v serve_v for_o the_o proof_n of_o a_o future_a judgement_n for_o if_o this_o will_v not_o prove_v it_o nothing_o will_n there_o be_v indeed_o another_o sort_n of_o argument_n to_o prove_v it_o but_o they_o principal_o relate_v to_o the_o person_n of_o our_o judge_n or_o who_o shall_v be_v our_o judge_n viz._n the_o son_n of_o man_n christ_n jesus_n who_o be_v god_n incarnate_a and_o to_o which_o st._n paul_n refer_v 17_o act_n 31._o that_o god_n have_v appoint_v a_o day_n wherein_o he_o will_v judge_v the_o world_n in_o righteousness_n by_o that_o man_n who_o he_o have_v ordain_v whereof_o he_o have_v give_v assurance_n unto_o all_o man_n in_o that_o he_o have_v raise_v he_o from_o the_o dead_a but_o i_o shall_v defer_v that_o till_o i_o come_v to_o speak_v of_o the_o person_n of_o our_o judge_n sect_n vi_o the_o improvement_n of_o this_o doctrine_n in_o some_o practical_a inference_n as_o 1._o to_o live_v as_o it_o and_o death_n nor_o be_v there_o any_o great_a difficulty_n to_o know_v how_o those_o man_n ought_v to_o live_v who_o must_v be_v judge_v every_o man_n know_v this_o without_o a_o teacher_n who_o will_v give_v himself_o leave_v to_o think_v a_o steward_n a_o factor_n a_o labourer_n any_o person_n who_o be_v liable_a to_o the_o censure_n and_o judgement_n of_o a_o superior_a who_o will_v call_v he_o to_o a_o account_n know_v what_o he_o be_v to_o do_v to_o prepare_v his_o account_n and_o there_o be_v no_o great_a mystery_n in_o prepare_v ourselves_o for_o god_n judgement_n than_o for_o the_o judgement_n of_o men._n but_o because_o all_o man_n will_v not_o consider_v thing_n as_o they_o ought_v though_o they_o be_v never_o so_o plain_a and_o obvious_a i_o shall_v brief_o suggest_v some_o rule_n to_o you_o which_o you_o must_v all_o acknowledge_v very_o reasonable_a at_o the_o first_o hear_n and_o which_o if_o well_o observe_v will_v make_v we_o lift_v up_o our_o head_n in_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n and_o expect_v it_o without_o astonishment_n and_o terror_n 1._o if_o we_o must_v be_v judge_v it_o become_v we_o to_o act_v with_o great_a consideration_n and_o advice_n rafhness_n precipitancy_n inadvertency_n to_o do_v we_o know_v not_o what_o in_o a_o heat_n and_o impetus_fw-la without_o consider_v whether_o it_o be_v good_a or_o evil_n right_a or_o wrong_n do_v not_o become_v those_o who_o must_v be_v judge_v to_o be_v judge_v be_v to_o be_v call_v to_o a_o account_n to_o give_v a_o reason_n for_o what_o we_o do_v and_o therefore_o we_o ought_v to_o consider_v what_o reason_n to_o give_v before_o we_o do_v it_o we_o must_v be_v judge_v by_o a_o rule_n as_o you_o shall_v hear_v more_o hereafter_o and_o therefore_o we_o ought_v to_o live_v by_o of_o reason_v of_o consider_v and_o do_v not_o god_n give_v these_o power_n and_o faculty_n to_o you_o to_o direct_v and_o govern_v your_o life_n do_v he_o not_o make_v you_o reasonable_a creature_n that_o you_o may_v consider_v and_o live_v by_o reason_n and_o be_v it_o any_o excuse_v then_o for_o a_o reasonable_a creature_n that_o he_o live_v and_o act_v without_o reason_n and_o a_o wise_a consideration_n of_o thing_n this_o be_v the_o great_a degeneracy_n of_o humane_a nature_n the_o abuse_n and_o corruption_n of_o those_o natural_a power_n which_o god_n haâ—h_v give_v we_o the_o source_n of_o all_o the_o evil_n that_o be_v in_o this_o world_n and_o therefore_o can_v be_v no_o excuse_n much_o less_o when_o we_o know_v that_o god_n will_v judge_v we_o and_o require_v a_o reason_n of_o our_o action_n for_o not_o to_o consider_v our_o own_o way_n when_o we_o know_v god_n consider_v they_o and_o will_v require_v a_o account_n of_o they_o be_v a_o contempt_n of_o his_o judgement_n for_o do_v we_o reverence_v our_o judge_n we_o must_v consider_v and_o yet_o how_o many_o mad_a extravagant_a wicked_a action_n be_v there_o daily_o commit_v which_o those_o who_o do_v they_o never_o think_v why_o they_o do_v they_o nor_o what_o reasonable_a account_n they_o can_v give_v of_o they_o either_o to_o god_n or_o man._n some_o man_n be_v very_o â—ond_a of_o what_o they_o call_v a_o frolic_a that_o be_v to_o lay_v aside_o all_o thought_n and_o consideration_n and_o to_o give_v themselves_o up_o to_o the_o government_n of_o 〈◊〉_d very_o sudden_a and_o unaccountable_a fancy_n and_o the_o more_o wild_a and_o extravagant_a it_o be_v the_o more_o entertain_v without_o any_o regard_n to_o virtue_n or_o vice_n to_o decency_n and_o honour_n the_o least_o thought_n of_o which_o be_v a_o profanation_n of_o these_o bedlam_n mystery_n they_o drink_v themselves_o drink_v in_o a_o frolic_a blaspheme_v god_n and_o his_o son_n jesus_n crist_n and_o his_o most_o holy_a religion_n abuse_v wife_n and_o virgin_n murder_v innocent_a people_n and_o affront_v all_o they_o meet_v in_o a_o frolic_a but_o it_o be_v ridiculous_a to_o imagine_v if_o we_o must_v be_v judge_v that_o such_o frolic_v as_o these_o shall_v be_v allow_v in_o the_o account_n or_o pass_v for_o cipher_n and_o empty_a scene_n of_o life_n to_o signify_v no_o more_o than_o they_o be_v intend_v for_o that_o because_o we_o choose_v at_o such_o a_o time_n to_o act_v without_o reason_n and_o consideration_n therefore_o god_n shall_v demand_v no_o reason_n nor_o account_n of_o such_o action_n and_o yet_o a_o very_a great_a part_n of_o the_o world_n though_o they_o do_v not_o run_v into_o such_o outrageous_a frolic_v as_o these_o be_v yet_o their_o life_n be_v little_o better_o than_o a_o train_n of_o incoherent_a and_o independent_a fancy_n and_o humour_n they_o live_v without_o thought_n or_o any_o wise_a design_n any_o extempore_o project_n have_v they_o which_o start_v up_o in_o their_o mind_n or_o strike_v their_o fancy_n they_o scarce_o know_v what_o they_o have_v to_o do_v the_o next_o day_n nor_o how_o they_o spend_v the_o last_o but_o be_v this_o a_o life_n for_o man_n who_o be_v to_o be_v judge_v other_o there_o be_v who_o give_v themselves_o up_o to_o the_o government_n of_o their_o passion_n which_o be_v so_o vehement_a and_o impetuous_a and_o always_o in_o so_o much_o haste_n that_o they_o will_v neither_o hear_v reason_n nor_o allow_v any_o time_n for_o it_o and_o then_o no_o wonder_n if_o they_o do_v such_o thing_n as_o they_o can_v give_v no_o good_a account_n of_o when_o their_o passion_n be_v over_o other_o be_v more_o fix_v and_o resolve_v in_o their_o way_n they_o have_v choose_v such_o a_o course_n of_o life_n as_o they_o like_v best_a and_o they_o be_v resolve_v to_o pursue_v it_o and_o that_o nothing_o shall_v put_v they_o out_o of_o it_o and_o therefore_o they_o resolve_v against_o think_v too_o lest_o that_o shall_v disturb_v they_o and_o give_v check_v to_o their_o enjoyment_n they_o will_v neither_o listen_v to_o their_o
the_o gospel_n be_v never_o intend_v by_o our_o saviour_n as_o the_o reward_n or_o motive_n of_o our_o obedience_n but_o only_o to_o encourage_v and_o support_v we_o in_o our_o pilgrimage_n in_o they_o leave_v these_o body_n but_o not_o in_o hell_n and_o that_o good_a man_n be_v in_o a_o state_n of_o rest_n and_o happiness_n but_o not_o in_o heaven_n but_o they_o never_o think_v of_o a_o place_n of_o torment_n to_o expiate_v the_o temporal_a punishment_n due_a to_o sin_n when_o the_o eternal_a punishment_n be_v remit_v which_o be_v the_o popish_a purgatory_n and_o the_o most_o barbarous_a representation_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n though_o the_o most_o profitable_a
have_v they_o not_o but_o this_o do_v not_o hinder_v but_o that_o they_o may_v give_v a_o account_n of_o their_o poverty_n and_o those_o grace_n which_o become_v a_o poor_a and_o low_a fortune_n they_o shall_v not_o be_v examine_v about_o their_o charity_n when_o they_o have_v nothing_o to_o give_v but_o they_o may_v for_o their_o thankfulness_n to_o god_n and_o to_o their_o benefactor_n they_o shall_v not_o be_v examine_v how_o they_o use_v their_o riches_n which_o they_o have_v not_o but_o they_o may_v be_v how_o they_o bear_v their_o poverty_n whether_o external_a poverty_n have_v teach_v they_o true_a poverty_n of_o spirit_n humility_n modesty_n patience_n in_o want_n and_o suffering_n contentment_n with_o a_o little_a submission_n to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o a_o cheerful_a dependence_n on_o providence_n for_o their_o daily_a bread_n whether_o they_o have_v constant_o pray_v to_o god_n for_o the_o supply_n of_o their_o want_n as_o well_o as_o beg_v a_o alm_n of_o man_n and_o implore_v the_o help_n and_o assistance_n of_o the_o rich_a these_o be_v duty_n and_o virtue_n which_o poverty_n teach_v and_o which_o poor_a man_n ought_v to_o exercise_v and_o therefore_o which_o god_n may_v challenge_v from_o they_o and_o judge_v they_o for_o it_o be_v a_o very_a wild_a imagination_n to_o think_v that_o poverty_n will_v excuse_v man_n pride_n and_o rudeness_n and_o insolence_n unless_o it_o be_v a_o virtue_n to_o be_v proud_a when_o man_n have_v no_o temptation_n to_o it_o when_o they_o have_v nothing_o to_o be_v proud_a of_o will_v poverty_n excuse_v sloth_n and_o idleness_n when_o man_n have_v nothing_o to_o live_v by_o but_o their_o hand_n be_v that_o a_o reason_n why_o they_o shall_v not_o work_v when_o man_n be_v able_a to_o work_v and_o get_v their_o own_o live_n be_v poverty_n a_o excuse_n for_o beg_v and_o live_v idle_o upon_o the_o charity_n and_o industry_n of_o other_o man_n when_o they_o work_v hard_o all_o day_n to_o get_v bread_n for_o themselves_o and_o family_n be_v this_o a_o reason_n to_o go_v to_o the_o alehouse_n and_o spend_v it_o all_o at_o night_n to_o make_v themselves_o beast_n and_o leave_v their_o wife_n and_o child_n to_o starve_v aught_o not_o god_n and_o man_n to_o judge_v they_o for_o this_o but_o above_o all_o thing_n poverty_n be_v the_o most_o unreasonable_a and_o senseless_a excuse_n for_o irreligion_n for_o neglect_v the_o worship_n of_o god_n for_o certain_o if_o any_o thing_n will_v make_v we_o sensible_a how_o much_o we_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o god_n poverty_n will_v rich_a man_n who_o coffer_n be_v full_a of_o treasure_n who_o have_v good_n lay_v up_o for_o many_o year_n be_v apt_a to_o forget_v god_n because_o they_o think_v they_o have_v no_o present_a need_n of_o he_o they_o know_v how_o to_o live_v without_o he_o they_o have_v no_o occasion_n to_o beg_v their_o daily_a bread_n of_o he_o who_o have_v enough_o to_o last_v their_o life_n and_o to_o maintain_v their_o posterity_n in_o luxury_n when_o they_o be_v go_v but_o methinks_v poor_a man_n who_o have_v no_o provision_n before_o hand_n and_o know_v not_o where_o they_o shall_v have_v their_o bread_n the_o next_o day_n shall_v be_v very_o sensible_a that_o they_o live_v upon_o providence_n that_o they_o have_v nothing_o else_o to_o trust_v to_o and_o will_v not_o any_o one_o reasonable_o expect_v that_o such_o man_n will_v be_v very_o devout_a worshipper_n of_o god_n will_v pray_v constant_o and_o hearty_o to_o he_o to_o take_v they_o into_o his_o care_n when_o they_o have_v nothing_o but_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n to_o depend_v on_o one_o will_v think_v such_o man_n shall_v above_o all_o thing_n take_v care_n to_o please_v god_n and_o to_o make_v he_o their_o friend_n and_o patron_n for_o if_o he_o cast_v they_o off_o they_o have_v no_o other_o refuge_n that_o be_v a_o profane_a irreligious_a mind_n indeed_o who_o want_n and_o distress_n will_v not_o drive_v to_o god_n but_o what_o will_v you_o have_v such_o poor_a man_n do_v they_o have_v time_n to_o spare_v for_o their_o prayer_n unless_o they_o shall_v spare_v it_o from_o eat_v or_o sleep_v they_o must_v be_v up_o early_o at_o work_n and_o have_v not_o leisure_n for_o their_o devotion_n as_o those_o have_v who_o live_v at_o ease_n but_o do_v they_o believe_v the_o divine_a prodence_n it_o will_v satisfy_v they_o that_o the_o time_n of_o prayer_n be_v the_o best_a spend_v of_o any_o time_n in_o the_o day_n and_o contribute_v more_o to_o make_v a_o comfortable_a provision_n for_o they_o then_o their_o hard_a labour_n for_o the_o blessing_n of_o god_n be_v more_o than_o our_o diligence_n and_o labour_n he_o can_v succeed_v and_o prosper_v our_o work_n he_o can_v raise_v up_o unexpected_a friend_n to_o we_o and_o by_o some_o unseen_a accident_n can_v change_v the_o whole_a scene_n of_o our_o life_n for_o a_o more_o easy_a and_o prosperous_a fortune_n however_o want_v of_o time_n for_o prayer_n and_o devotion_n be_v always_o a_o pretence_n and_o nothing_o but_o a_o pretence_n to_o excuse_v the_o indevotion_n of_o our_o mind_n a_o man_n who_o love_v and_o reverence_v god_n never_o want_v time_n for_o prayer_n whatever_o his_o state_n of_o life_n be_v a_o poor_a labour_a man_n can_v every_o day_n spend_v a_o hour_n at_o church_n at_o his_o prayer_n but_o if_o he_o have_v a_o mind_n prepare_v and_o dispose_v for_o it_o he_o can_v fall_v upon_o his_o knee_n and_o offer_v up_o a_o short_a prayer_n to_o god_n as_o soon_o as_o he_o rise_v which_o take_v up_o very_o little_a time_n and_o though_o he_o can_v be_v long_o upon_o his_o knee_n yet_o he_o can_v raise_v up_o his_o heart_n to_o heaven_n in_o short_a and_o pious_a ejaculation_n no_o business_n can_v hinder_v a_o devout_a mind_n from_o this_o and_o therefore_o no_o business_n can_v excuse_v the_o not_o do_v it_o and_o this_o will_v be_v accept_v by_o god_n when_o we_o have_v no_o time_n for_o more_o solemn_a prayer_n so_o that_o you_o see_v religion_n be_v the_o business_n and_o aught_o to_o be_v the_o care_n of_o poor_a man_n as_o well_o as_o of_o the_o rich_a there_o be_v grace_n and_o virtue_n for_o they_o to_o exercise_v proper_a for_o their_o state_n of_o life_n and_o therefore_o they_o shall_v be_v judge_v as_o well_o as_o the_o rich_a and_o ought_v frequent_o to_o think_v of_o a_o future_a judgement_n and_o to_o live_v under_o the_o constant_a awe_n and_o sense_n of_o it_o the_o constant_a sense_n of_o a_o future_a judgement_n be_v very_o necessary_a for_o all_o mankind_n to_o govern_v their_o life_n and_o to_o prepare_v their_o account_n but_o beside_o this_o it_o be_v of_o the_o great_a use_n to_o poor_a man_n of_o any_o other_o for_o it_o will_v in_o a_o great_a measure_n help_v to_o cure_v their_o poverty_n or_o to_o make_v it_o easy_a in_o ordinary_a case_n a_o man_n who_o live_v under_o a_o constant_a sense_n of_o judgement_n can_v be_v poor_a to_o extremity_n for_o the_o sense_n of_o judgement_n will_v make_v he_o diligent_a and_o industrious_a and_o honest_a and_o frugal_a and_o temperate_a and_o a_o devout_a worshipper_n of_o god_n which_o be_v all_o thrive_a virtue_n and_o will_v not_o suffer_v a_o man_n to_o be_v miserable_o poor_a the_o diligent_a hand_n make_v rich_a and_o when_o it_o do_v not_o make_v rich_a it_o at_o least_o prevent_v poverty_n inflexible_a honesty_n give_v a_o man_n reputation_n in_o the_o world_n bring_v he_o into_o business_n and_o employment_n and_o that_o be_v a_o way_n to_o thrive_v frugality_n and_o temperance_n save_o what_o be_v get_v and_o increase_v the_o store_n and_o reverence_n and_o devotion_n for_o god_n bring_v down_o blessing_n on_o they_o gives_z success_n to_o their_o honest_a labour_n and_o we_o know_v it_o be_v the_o blessing_n of_o god_n which_o make_v rich._n the_o experience_n of_o the_o world_n as_o well_o as_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o thing_n prove_v this_o the_o miserable_a poor_a be_v general_o the_o most_o corrupt_a and_o profligate_v part_n of_o mankind_n the_o very_a reproach_n of_o humane_a nature_n and_o if_o you_o make_v any_o curious_a observation_n about_o it_o you_o will_v general_o find_v that_o it_o be_v not_o their_o poverty_n which_o make_v they_o wicked_a but_o their_o wickedness_n make_v they_o poor_a you_o shall_v very_o rare_o see_v a_o honest_a industrious_a sober_a pious_a man_n but_o make_v a_o very_a good_a shift_n to_o live_v comfortable_o in_o the_o world_n unless_o the_o time_n prove_v very_o hard_o that_o there_o be_v but_o little_a work_n and_o provision_n dear_a or_o that_o his_o family_n increase_v so_o quick_a upon_o he_o that_o he_o have_v a_o great_a charge_n of_o child_n before_o any_o of_o they_o be_v capable_a of_o work_v for_o their_o live_n and_o in_o this_o case_n such_o industrious_a man_n seldom_o want_v friend_n
he_o may_v secure_o hope_v and_o rejoice_v in_o god_n for_o whatever_o other_o defect_n the_o pure_a eye_n of_o god_n may_v see_v in_o he_o they_o be_v all_o within_o the_o grace_n and_o mercy_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o therefore_o can_v hinder_v either_o his_o pardon_n or_o his_o reward_n thus_o we_o see_v that_o when_o conscience_n absolute_o condemn_v or_o when_o without_o any_o doubt_n or_o hesitancy_n it_o commend_v acquit_v and_o absolve_v its_o sentence_n be_v a_o divine_a oracle_n and_o assure_v we_o what_o our_o judgement_n shall_v be_v at_o the_o last_o day_n if_o we_o be_v then_o find_v in_o such_o a_o state_n but_o there_o be_v a_o middle_a state_n between_o these_o two_o which_o deserve_v to_o be_v consider_v when_o man_n be_v neither_o so_o wicked_a as_o to_o be_v absolute_o condemn_v by_o their_o own_o conscience_n nor_o so_o good_a as_o to_o be_v acquit_v and_o absolve_v which_o be_v a_o uncertain_a state_n between_o hope_n and_o fear_n this_o be_v the_o case_n of_o those_o man_n who_o have_v be_v guilty_a of_o very_o great_a sin_n which_o they_o have_v live_v in_o many_o year_n and_o though_o they_o be_v very_o sensible_a of_o their_o past_a wickedness_n and_o hearty_o sorry_a for_o their_o sin_n and_o serious_o resolve_v by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n to_o forsake_v they_o yet_o they_o be_v not_o satisfy_v of_o the_o sincerity_n of_o their_o repentance_n because_o they_o have_v not_o with_o all_o their_o sorrow_n and_o resolution_n conquer_v their_o inclination_n to_o sin_n nor_o break_v the_o habit_n of_o it_o but_o be_v guilty_a of_o frequent_a relapse_n and_o fall_v into_o the_o commission_n of_o the_o same_o sin_n again_o and_o then_o repent_v and_o resolve_v again_o and_o as_o time_n wear_v off_o their_o sorrow_n for_o their_o last_o offence_n their_o old_a inclination_n revive_v and_o a_o new_a temptation_n conquer_v again_o now_o such_o man_n conscience_n neither_o absolute_o condemn_v nor_o absolute_o acquit_v they_o for_o the_o event_n be_v doubtful_a they_o be_v not_o conqueror_n yet_o and_o it_o be_v uncertain_a whether_o ever_o they_o will_v conquer_v and_o therefore_o their_o conscience_n can_v yet_o speak_v peace_n to_o they_o and_o yet_o they_o be_v not_o perfect_a slave_n and_o captive_n to_o sin_n but_o contend_v for_o their_o liberty_n and_o therefore_o their_o conscience_n do_v not_o absolute_o condemn_v they_o but_o as_o they_o prevail_v or_o yield_v so_o their_o hope_n or_o fear_n increase_v and_o this_o also_o be_v the_o case_n of_o those_o man_n who_o if_o they_o commit_v no_o notorious_a wickedness_n yet_o do_v very_o little_a good_a nothing_o that_o their_o conscience_n can_v commend_v they_o for_o who_o worship_n god_n rather_o in_o compliance_n with_o the_o custom_n of_o the_o place_n they_o live_v in_o than_o from_o a_o vital_a sense_n and_o reverence_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o be_v not_o for_o any_o work_n of_o supererogation_n a_o little_a will_v content_v they_o and_o they_o be_v glad_a of_o any_o excuse_n to_o lessen_v that_o little_a and_o all_o man_n who_o pretend_v to_o great_a devotion_n they_o suspect_v of_o hypocrisy_n and_o some_o secular_a interest_n as_o for_o charity_n though_o they_o must_v own_o charity_n to_o be_v a_o virtue_n yet_o when_o any_o particular_a act_n of_o charity_n be_v press_v on_o they_o they_o never_o want_v argument_n to_o prove_v either_o that_o it_o be_v not_o charity_n or_o that_o they_o be_v not_o concern_v in_o it_o whatever_o kindness_n they_o do_v for_o other_o be_v extort_a by_o great_a importunity_n and_o do_v very_o thrifty_o just_a as_o man_n do_v what_o they_o have_v no_o mind_n nor_o inclination_n â—o_o now_o these_o man_n common_o be_v pretty_a quiet_n and_o secure_a unless_o something_o extraordinary_a awaken_v they_o for_o they_o do_v nothing_o great_o to_o terrify_v their_o conscience_n nor_o any_o thing_n to_o please_v they_o and_o therefore_o their_o conscience_n neither_o absolve_v nor_o condemn_v such_o man_n dont_fw-fr well_o know_v what_o to_o think_v of_o themselves_o nor_o do_v they_o much_o think_v of_o these_o matter_n if_o they_o be_v gay_a and_o in_o good_a humour_n all_o be_v very_o well_o if_o any_o cross_a accident_n disturb_v they_o and_o make_v they_o thoughtful_a and_o fall_v out_o with_o this_o world_n or_o work_n upon_o a_o melancholy_a constitution_n than_o they_o be_v overrun_v with_o black_a and_o dismal_a thought_n and_o all_o the_o minister_n in_o the_o neighbourhood_n be_v send_v for_o to_o answer_v case_n of_o conscience_n and_o to_o speak_v such_o comfort_n to_o they_o as_o their_o own_o conscience_n can_v and_o will_v not_o speak_v now_o this_o case_n our_o apostle_n take_v no_o notice_n of_o for_o indeed_o nothing_o be_v to_o be_v say_v to_o it_o such_o man_n can_v know_v by_o the_o judgement_n of_o their_o own_o conscience_n what_o judgement_n god_n will_v pass_v on_o they_o because_o their_o conscience_n pass_v no_o certain_a judgement_n on_o they_o but_o when_o conscience_n do_v give_v judgement_n of_o we_o when_o it_o absolute_o acquit_v or_o absolute_o condemn_v we_o we_o may_v depend_v on_o it_o that_o god_n will_v judge_v we_o as_o our_o conscience_n do_v there_o be_v some_o objection_n against_o this_o which_o be_v easy_o answer_v from_o that_o plain_a state_n of_o the_o case_n which_o i_o have_v now_o give_v as_o to_o name_v some_o there_o be_v a_o great_a many_o very_a bad_a man_n who_o go_v on_o in_o their_o sin_n without_o any_o check_n and_o rebuke_n of_o their_o own_o conscience_n much_o more_o without_o be_v condemn_v by_o they_o and_o will_v not_o god_n condemn_v these_o man_n because_o their_o own_o conscience_n do_v not_o condemn_v they_o yes_o no_o doubt_n but_o he_o will_v for_o he_o will_v condemn_v all_o bad_a man_n whether_o their_o own_o conscience_n at_o present_a condemn_v they_o or_o not_o but_o by_o not_o condemn_v the_o apostle_n mean_v acquit_v and_o absolve_v which_o these_o man_n conscience_n do_v not_o though_o they_o do_v not_o condemn_v they_o do_v not_o commend_v nor_o absolve_v neither_o that_o be_v they_o pass_v no_o judgement_n at_o all_o but_o be_v sear_v and_o stupefy_v by_o atheism_n or_o a_o long_a custom_n in_o sin_v when_o conscience_n do_v judge_v and_o do_v not_o condemn_v god_n will_v not_o condemn_v neither_o but_o there_o be_v a_o great_a difference_n between_o not_o judge_v and_o not_o condemn_v and_o therefore_o notwithstanding_o what_o the_o apostle_n say_v god_n may_v condemn_v when_o conscience_n do_v not_o judge_n though_o he_o will_v not_o condemn_v when_o a_o judge_a conscience_n do_v not_o condemn_v and_o the_o difference_n between_o these_o two_o between_o not_o judge_v and_o not_o condemn_v be_v very_o evident_a for_o it_o be_v often_o see_v that_o man_n who_o conscience_n have_v give_v they_o no_o disturbance_n for_o many_o year_n in_o a_o course_n of_o sin_n that_o be_v have_v never_o judge_v they_o yet_o whenever_o their_o conscience_n be_v awaken_v as_o they_o be_v sometime_o by_o severe_a providence_n or_o at_o least_o by_o the_o approach_n of_o death_n than_o they_o condemn_v they_o and_o fill_v they_o with_o terror_n and_o amazement_n there_o be_v other_o bad_a man_n who_o do_v very_o wicked_a thing_n and_o yet_o their_o conscience_n be_v so_o far_o from_o condemn_v they_o that_o they_o commend_v and_o applaud_v they_o nay_o we_o know_v there_o have_v be_v those_o who_o conscience_n have_v indulge_v they_o in_o all_o manner_n of_o wickedness_n and_o flatter_v they_o into_o a_o opinion_n of_o their_o be_v great_a saint_n and_o dear_a to_o god_n all_o the_o while_n and_o will_v not_o god_n condemn_v these_o man_n because_o their_o conscience_n do_v not_o condemn_v they_o but_o promise_v they_o not_o only_a impunity_n but_o great_a reward_n thus_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n many_o very_a good_a man_n who_o to_o all_o appearance_n have_v live_v very_o innocent_a and_o virtuous_a life_n fall_v under_o great_a disorder_n of_o mind_n and_o not_o only_o condemn_v but_o pass_v a_o final_a irreversible_a sentence_n upon_o themselves_o that_o they_o be_v not_o only_o at_o present_a in_o a_o state_n of_o damnation_n but_o that_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o they_o ever_o to_o get_v out_o of_o it_o and_o that_o they_o must_v be_v certain_o damn_v now_o will_v god_n condemn_v these_o good_a man_n because_o their_o conscience_n condemn_v they_o i_o have_v put_v these_o two_o case_n together_o because_o the_o same_o answer_n will_v serve_v both_o this_o be_v not_o the_o judgement_n of_o conscience_n which_o st._n john_n speak_v of_o but_o the_o judgement_n of_o opinion_n and_o mistake_v notion_n in_o religion_n or_o of_o melancholy_a and_o a_o distemper_a fancy_n the_o judgement_n of_o conscience_n be_v that_o judgement_n which_o we_o pass_v on_o ourselves_o from_o compare_v our_o life_n with_o the_o rule_n whereby_o we_o shall_v be_v judge_v and_o this_o judgement_n
