distinct_a virtue_n of_o justice_n and_o mercy_n in_o discourse_v of_o justice_n i_o shall_v endeavour_v these_o two_o thing_n 1._o to_o show_v what_o that_o justice_n be_v which_o be_v require_v of_o we_o towards_o our_o neighbour_n 2._o to_o prove_v that_o it_o be_v ground_v upon_o such_o immutable_a reason_n as_o do_v render_v it_o a_o moral_a good_n i._o i_o shall_v endeavour_v to_o show_v what_o that_o justice_n be_v which_o be_v owe_v to_o our_o neighbour_n in_o general_a therefore_o justice_n consist_v in_o give_v to_o every_o one_o his_o due_a in_o which_o latitude_n it_o comprehend_v all_o matter_n of_o duty_n for_o every_o duty_n be_v a_o due_a to_o god_n or_o our_o neighbour_n or_o our_o self_n and_o according_o every_o performance_n of_o every_o duty_n be_v a_o payment_n of_o some_o due_n and_o as_o such_o be_v a_o act_n of_o righteousness_n and_o therefore_o in_o scripture_n good_a man_n be_v frequent_o style_v righteous_a and_o the_o whole_a of_o virtue_n and_o goodness_n be_v call_v righteousness_n because_o it_o be_v a_o payment_n of_o some_o due_a either_o to_o god_n our_o self_n or_o our_o neighbour_n but_o justice_n be_v here_o consider_v as_o a_o distinct_a and_o particular_a virtue_n must_v be_v understand_v in_o a_o more_o limit_a sense_n viz._n for_o honesty_n in_o all_o our_o deal_n with_o man_n or_o give_v to_o every_o man_n his_o due_a with_o who_o we_o have_v any_o intercourse_n and_o wherein_o this_o consist_v will_v best_o appear_v by_o consider_v what_o those_o thing_n be_v which_o be_v due_a from_o one_o man_n to_o another_o or_o what_o those_o due_n and_o right_n be_v which_o man_n may_v claim_v by_o the_o eternal_a law_n of_o righteousness_n and_o these_o be_v twofold_a 1._o natural_a and_o 2._o acquire_v i_o begin_v with_o the_o first_o viz._n the_o natural_a right_n of_o man_n which_o be_v such_o as_o appertain_v to_o man_n as_o they_o be_v reasonable_a creature_n and_o dwell_v in_o mortal_a body_n and_o join_v to_o one_o another_o by_o their_o natural_a relation_n and_o by_o society_n for_o in_o all_o these_o capacity_n there_o accrue_v to_o man_n certain_a natural_a right_n which_o we_o be_v oblige_v in_o justice_n not_o to_o violate_v but_o so_o far_o as_o we_o can_v to_o secure_a and_o make_v good_a to_o one_o another_o first_o therefore_o we_o will_v consider_v man_n as_o dwell_v in_o mortal_a body_n second_o as_o rational_a creature_n three_o as_o join_v to_o one_o another_o by_o natural_a relation_n four_o as_o natural_o unite_v in_o society_n and_o i_o will_v show_v what_o right_n there_o be_v redound_v to_o they_o from_o all_o these_o respect_n and_o consideration_n i._o we_o will_v consider_v man_n as_o dwell_n in_o mortal_a body_n in_o which_o there_o be_v a_o twofold_a right_o accrue_v to_o they_o 1._o a_o right_a to_o their_o body_n 2._o a_o right_a to_o their_o bodily_a subsistence_n i._o as_o dwell_v in_o mortal_a body_n they_o have_v a_o natural_a right_n to_o their_o body_n and_o to_o all_o the_o part_n of_o they_o for_o their_o body_n be_v the_o tenement_n which_o the_o great_a landlord_n of_o the_o world_n have_v allot_v to_o their_o soul_n during_o their_o abode_n in_o this_o terrestrial_a state_n be_v upon_o that_o account_n their_o undoubted_a right_n which_o unless_o they_o forfeit_v they_o can_v be_v deprive_v of_o without_o manifest_a injury_n and_o injustice_n for_o if_o god_n give_v this_o body_n to_o my_o soul_n it_o be_v certain_a that_o immediate_o under_o he_o my_o soul_n have_v a_o right_a to_o it_o and_o hold_v in_o as_o they_o render_v our_o body_n either_o less_o useful_a to_o ourselves_o or_o less_o graceful_a and_o amiable_a to_o other_o and_o indeed_o our_o body_n be_v a_o object_n of_o sense_n be_v usual_o be_v much_o more_o liable_a to_o be_v reflect_v on_o both_o by_o ourselves_o and_o those_o we_o converse_v with_o than_o the_o stain_n and_o deformity_n of_o our_o mind_n and_o will_n which_o be_v place_v out_o of_o sight_n be_v less_o expose_v to_o observation_n which_o be_v the_o reason_n that_o our_o corporeal_a defect_n be_v so_o grievous_a to_o we_o because_o be_v so_o apparent_a as_o they_o be_v both_o to_o our_o own_o and_o other_o sense_n they_o do_v not_o only_o upbraid_v we_o to_o our_o self_n who_o be_v lead_v by_o sense_n be_v apt_a to_o value_v ourselves_o by_o sensible_a grace_n and_o perfection_n but_o be_v also_o prone_a to_o create_v a_o mean_a and_o contemptible_a opinion_n of_o we_o in_o the_o mind_n of_o other_o the_o very_a suspicion_n of_o which_o if_o we_o be_v not_o raise_v above_o such_o mean_a consideration_n will_v be_v exceed_o apt_a to_o grieve_v and_o afflict_v we_o in_o this_o case_n therefore_o the_o law_n of_o mercy_n require_v we_o not_o to_o contemn_v or_o undervalue_v man_n not_o to_o upbraid_v or_o reproach_v they_o upon_o the_o account_n of_o any_o bodily_a blemish_n or_o defect_n but_o to_o overlook_a these_o as_o inconsiderable_a flaw_n of_o their_o case_n and_o outside_o and_o render_v they_o all_o those_o honour_n and_o respect_n which_o the_o grace_n and_o virtue_n of_o their_o mind_n deserve_v consider_v that_o the_o body_n be_v not_o the_o man_n but_o the_o immortal_a mind_n that_o inhabit_v it_o and_o that_o many_o time_n the_o rich_a diamond_n wear_v the_o rough_a coat_n and_o outside_n that_o those_o natural_a blemish_n be_v infelicity_n which_o man_n can_v not_o prevent_v and_o which_o they_o can_v rectify_v that_o it_o be_v not_o in_o their_o power_n to_o order_v nature_n in_o their_o own_o composure_n but_o that_o what_o they_o have_v there_o be_v such_o as_o they_o can_v neither_o give_v themselves_o nor_o yet_o refuse_v when_o it_o be_v bequeath_v to_o they_o and_o that_o therefore_o to_o deride_v and_o expose_v they_o for_o any_o mishap_n or_o blemish_n in_o their_o composition_n be_v to_o fling_v salt_n into_o their_o wound_n to_o fret_v and_o inflame_v their_o misery_n and_o yet_o alas_o how_o common_a a_o practice_n be_v this_o to_o sport_n with_o the_o deformity_n of_o man_n as_o if_o god_n and_o nature_n have_v design_v they_o for_o so_o many_o finger-but_n of_o scorn_n and_o derision_n to_o make_v they_o the_o theme_n of_o our_o jest_n and_o laughter_n which_o be_v a_o lamentable_a instance_n of_o the_o foul_a degeneracy_n of_o humane_a nature_n that_o can_v thus_o play_v upon_o misery_n and_o turn_v that_o which_o be_v a_o object_n of_o pity_n and_o compassion_n into_o a_o triumph_n of_o mirth_n and_o drollery_n for_o certain_o how_o light_n and_o trifle_a soever_o it_o may_v appear_v through_o the_o common_a practice_n of_o it_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n of_o barbarous_a ill-nature_n for_o man_n to_o deride_v those_o defect_n and_o blemish_n in_o another_o which_o he_o be_v too_o prone_a to_o grieve_v at_o but_o yet_o can_v help_v as_o be_v his_o infelicity_n and_o not_o

all_o the_o world_n will_v be_v so_o terrible_a as_o sin_n to_o we_o the_o mighty_a argument_n of_o the_o gospel_n will_v so_o over-awe_n we_o that_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o think_v of_o to_o and_o of_o who_o truth_n or_o falsehood_n we_o never_o trouble_v ourselves_o to_o inquire_v let_v we_o therefore_o but_o satisfy_v our_o own_o reason_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o our_o religion_n by_o consider_v impartial_o those_o mighty_a evidence_n it_o be_v found_v upon_o and_o than_o it_o will_v soon_o captivate_v our_o soul_n into_o the_o love_n and_o obedience_n of_o it_o and_o none_o of_o our_o lust_n will_v be_v able_a to_o withstand_v its_o mighty_a force_n and_o efficacy_n but_o will_v all_o be_v force_v to_o fall_v down_o before_o it_o as_o dagon_n do_v before_o the_o ark_n of_o the_o lord_n this_o therefore_o be_v the_o first_o instrument_n of_o mortification_n viz._n a_o hearty_a belief_n of_o the_o christian_a religion_n ii_o another_o instrument_n of_o shall_v persuade_v we_o unless_o we_o due_o consider_v the_o strength_n and_o force_n of_o they_o it_o be_v true_a our_o religion_n furnish_v we_o with_o sufficient_a argument_n to_o baffle_v all_o the_o temptation_n of_o sin_n but_o what_o will_v it_o signify_v to_o have_v good_a argument_n in_o our_o bibles_n while_o they_o be_v out_o of_o our_o thought_n and_o be_v not_o at_o all_o regard_v
