belong_v to_o this_o argument_n the_o first_o proposition_n i_o lay_v down_o be_v this_o that_o the_o first_o motion_n of_o our_o mind_n be_v very_o little_a if_o at_o all_o in_o our_o power_n by_o the_o first_o motion_n of_o our_o mind_n i_o mean_v those_o sudden_a thought_n or_o apprehension_n or_o passion_n or_o desire_n which_o be_v excite_v in_o our_o mind_n by_o any_o object_n that_o be_v at_o that_o time_n present_v to_o our_o imagination_n as_o to_o these_o i_o say_v we_o be_v not_o so_o much_o master_n of_o ourselves_o as_o to_o be_v able_a to_o stop_v they_o nay_o though_o perhaps_o they_o be_v very_o irregular_a and_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o they_o be_v produce_v so_o quick_a that_o there_o be_v not_o time_n enough_o give_v for_o reason_n to_o interpose_v there_o be_v no_o necessity_n indeed_o that_o a_o man_n shall_v give_v consent_n to_o these_o motion_n but_o as_o for_o their_o come_n into_o his_o mind_n he_o can_v no_o more_o help_v it_o than_o he_o can_v help_v his_o present_a temper_n or_o the_o present_a circumstance_n he_o be_v engage_v in_o thus_o for_o instance_n do_v you_o think_v it_o possible_a for_o a_o man_n that_o be_v of_o a_o fiery_a passionate_a temper_n to_o avoid_v the_o feel_n a_o sudden_a resentment_n of_o anger_n arise_v in_o his_o mind_n if_o he_o meet_v with_o any_o unexpected_a affront_n or_o other_o great_a provocation_n one_o be_v full_a of_o grief_n for_o the_o loss_n of_o a_o dear_a relation_n or_o transport_v with_o passion_n for_o some_o unworthy_a usage_n he_o have_v meet_v with_o it_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o say_v pray_v think_v not_o of_o these_o matter_n for_o these_o thing_n must_v and_o will_v in_o a_o great_a measure_n employ_v his_o thought_n till_o his_o passion_n do_v cool_a and_o the_o impression_n that_o cause_v they_o be_v vanish_v thus_o for_o a_o man_n to_o come_v from_o some_o business_n in_o which_o he_o be_v more_o than_o ordinary_o concern_v or_o from_o the_o hear_n some_o very_a good_a or_o very_a bad_a news_n i_o say_v to_o come_v fresh_a from_o this_o to_o the_o say_v his_o prayer_n i_o do_v not_o i_o can_v wonder_v that_o in_o this_o case_n his_o mind_n will_v be_v much_o upon_o his_o business_n or_o his_o news_n notwithstanding_o all_o his_o endeavour_n to_o the_o contrary_n for_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n be_v such_o that_o he_o can_v so_o of_o a_o sudden_a turn_n his_o mind_n from_o one_o business_n to_o another_o but_o that_o if_o he_o do_v close_o and_o vigorous_o apply_v himself_o to_o the_o first_o business_n his_o thought_n will_v for_o some_o time_n run_v upon_o it_o even_o after_o he_o have_v apply_v his_o mind_n to_o the_o other_o i_o do_v not_o deny_v but_o that_o a_o man_n may_v often_o so_o order_v his_o affair_n as_o to_o be_v able_a to_o keep_v his_o mind_n clear_a and_o free_a from_o such_o prepossession_n as_o i_o be_o now_o speak_v of_o so_o as_o that_o when_o he_o come_v to_o apply_v himself_o to_o any_o business_n he_o have_v a_o mind_n to_o he_o may_v intend_v it_o with_o his_o whole_a may_v but_o this_o i_o say_v if_o our_o mind_n be_v once_o engage_v with_o warm_a thought_n about_o any_o thing_n it_o be_v very_o some_o case_n likewise_o where_o a_o man_n thought_n be_v in_o a_o manner_n force_v upon_o he_o from_o the_o present_a temper_n and_o indisposition_n of_o his_o body_n so_o that_o though_o he_o be_v in_o no_o passion_n though_o there_o be_v no_o unusual_a object_n of_o sense_n that_o excite_v those_o thought_n in_o he_o nay_o though_o he_o never_o so_o much_o resolve_v not_o to_o think_v upon_o those_o thing_n yet_o so_o long_o as_o that_o habit_n of_o body_n last_v he_o can_v avoid_v those_o kind_n of_o thought_n so_o that_o in_o this_o case_n also_o there_o be_v little_a room_n leave_v for_o the_o government_n of_o thought_n that_o which_o i_o now_o say_v happen_v frequent_o not_o only_o in_o all_o sort_n of_o distemper_n where_o the_o brain_n be_v visible_o disturb_v as_o in_o fever_n and_o the_o like_a which_o often_o cause_n a_o thousand_o delirious_a fancy_n and_o sometime_o downright_a madness_n and_o distraction_n but_o also_o in_o other_o case_n where_o there_o seem_v to_o be_v no_o fever_n or_o other_o visible_a distemper_n nor_o do_v the_o brain_n as_o to_o other_o matter_n seem_v to_o be_v at_o all_o disorder_a but_o the_o person_n in_o all_o appearance_n be_v sound_a both_o in_o body_n and_o mind_n and_o this_o be_v the_o case_n of_o some_o deep_o hypochondriac_a person_n many_o of_o which_o will_v be_v haunt_v with_o a_o sett_n of_o thought_n and_o fancy_n that_o they_o can_v by_o no_o mean_n get_v rid_v of_o though_o they_o desire_v it_o never_o so_o earnest_o sometime_o they_o can_v get_v it_o out_o of_o their_o head_n but_o that_o they_o be_v atheist_n and_o infidel_n they_o neither_o believe_v in_o god_n nor_o in_o jesus_n christ_n nor_o have_v any_o sense_n at_o all_o of_o religion_n sometime_o they_o be_v torment_v with_o blasphemous_a thought_n and_o they_o can_v set_v themselves_o to_o the_o performance_n of_o any_o office_n of_o devotion_n but_o a_o thousand_o impious_a fancy_n will_v come_v in_o and_o spoil_v all_o sometime_o they_o fancy_v they_o be_v guilty_a of_o several_a grievous_a crime_n which_o it_o be_v to_o be_v hope_v it_o be_v hardly_o possible_a they_o shall_v be_v guilty_a of_o nay_o you_o can_v convince_v they_o but_o that_o they_o do_v every_o day_n commit_v some_o of_o these_o crime_n because_o they_o imagine_v they_o give_v consent_n to_o they_o and_o whilst_o these_o sort_n of_o thought_n fill_v their_o imagination_n there_o be_v not_o a_o passage_n in_o the_o bible_n that_o they_o read_v nor_o a_o sermon_n that_o they_o hear_v but_o they_o find_v something_o in_o it_o which_o they_o
be_v thereby_o make_v a_o blessing_n of_o god_n which_o without_o it_o perhaps_o may_v have_v be_v a_o cross_n and_o a_o affliction_n it_o be_v prayer_n by_o which_o every_o thing_n and_o every_o action_n be_v sanctify_v to_o believer_n i_o may_v name_v several_a other_o benefit_n and_o advantage_n to_o be_v reap_v from_o the_o conscientious_a practice_n of_o this_o duty_n but_o those_o that_o i_o have_v mention_v may_v i_o think_v if_o they_o be_v consider_v be_v sufficient_a to_o recommend_v it_o to_o any_o man_n whatsoever_o that_o have_v the_o least_o kindness_n for_o himself_o and_o i_o have_v yet_o do_v and_o that_o be_v the_o absolute_a necessity_n of_o constant_a prayer_n in_o order_n to_o a_o holy_a and_o virtuous_a life_n do_v any_o of_o you_o here_o present_a in_o good_a earnest_n mean_v to_o live_v as_o you_o shall_v do_v do_v you_o real_o intend_v or_o desire_v to_o endeavour_v after_o such_o a_o pitch_n of_o virtue_n and_o holiness_n as_o will_v be_v available_a for_o the_o save_v your_o soul_n everlasting_o if_o you_o do_v not_o it_o be_v in_o vain_a to_o attempt_v the_o persuade_v you_o to_o any_o thing_n of_o this_o nature_n if_o you_o do_v then_o give_v i_o leave_v to_o tell_v you_o that_o it_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a that_o you_o shall_v live_v in_o the_o constant_a exercise_n of_o prayer_n otherwise_o you_o will_v never_o do_v your_o business_n and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n i_o dare_v assure_v you_o if_o you_o do_v thus_o practice_v you_o will_v not_o fail_v of_o attain_v the_o end_n you_o aim_v at_o these_o three_o thing_n i_o dare_v lay_v down_o for_o truth_n in_o this_o matter_n first_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o any_o man_n to_o be_v good_a that_o live_v without_o constant_a pray_v second_o whoever_o be_v good_a at_o the_o present_a yet_o if_o he_o disuse_n himself_o in_o this_o point_n he_o will_v not_o continue_v good_a long_o and_o last_o whoever_o make_v a_o conscience_n of_o pray_v frequent_o and_o hearty_o and_o continue_v so_o to_o do_v though_o he_o can_v at_o present_v be_v say_v to_o be_v a_o good_a man_n yet_o it_o be_v impossible_a for_o he_o long_o to_o continue_v bad_a he_o will_v certain_o at_o last_o get_v the_o victory_n over_o his_o lust_n and_o evil_a habit_n so_o that_o prayer_n be_v both_o the_o mean_n without_o which_o virtue_n can_v be_v attain_v and_o the_o mean_n that_o never_o virtuous_a man_n that_o live_v without_o pray_v i_o do_v not_o deny_v that_o some_o who_o make_v no_o great_a conscience_n of_o this_o duty_n but_o live_v in_o a_o habitual_a neglect_n of_o it_o may_v so_o far_o retain_v the_o notion_n of_o good_a and_o evil_n and_o those_o notion_n may_v to_o far_o influence_n their_o action_n as_o that_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v notorious_o and_o scandalous_o vicious_a it_o may_v be_v they_o will_v not_o lie_v nor_o cheat_v nor_o oppress_v any_o one_o it_o may_v be_v they_o do_v not_o live_v in_o a_o course_n of_o lewdness_n and_o debauchery_n nor_o will_v be_v engage_v in_o any_o design_n or_o action_n that_o be_v apparent_o base_a or_o dishonourable_a but_o all_o this_o while_n these_o man_n be_v far_o from_o be_v virtuous_a in_o the_o sense_n we_o now_o speak_v of_o for_o we_o speak_v of_o such_o a_o virtue_n as_o recommend_v we_o to_o god_n such_o a_o virtue_n as_o will_v be_v effectual_a for_o our_o salvation_n in_o the_o other_o world_n now_o to_o such_o a_o virtue_n as_o this_o there_o go_v nothing_o less_o than_o a_o universal_a care_n over_o all_o our_o action_n a_o serious_a endeavour_n to_o frame_v all_o our_o conversation_n suitable_o and_o conformable_o to_o the_o law_n of_o our_o saviour_n but_o how_o can_v any_o man_n think_v he_o take_v care_n of_o this_o that_o know_o and_o willing_o live_v in_o a_o constant_a contradiction_n to_o one_o of_o the_o principal_a duty_n of_o our_o saviour_n religion_n our_o whole_a duty_n be_v make_v up_o but_o of_o three_o thing_n that_o a_o man_n live_v sober_o with_o respect_n to_o himself_o righteous_o with_o respect_n to_o his_o neighbour_n and_o pious_o with_o respect_n to_o god_n suppose_v now_o that_o a_o man_n take_v care_n of_o the_o two_o former_a that_o be_v of_o do_v his_o duty_n to_o himself_o and_o his_o neighbour_n which_o yet_o i_o believe_v never_o any_o man_n do_v that_o make_v no_o conscience_n of_o neglect_v his_o prayer_n but_o suppose_v a_o man_n can_v satisfy_v himself_o as_o to_o these_o two_o point_n of_o his_o duty_n yet_o if_o he_o make_v no_o conscience_n of_o the_o three_o that_o be_v of_o piety_n towards_o god_n as_o no_o man_n can_v make_v conscience_n of_o that_o who_o make_v it_o no_o matter_n of_o conscience_n whether_o he_o say_v his_o prayer_n or_o no_o in_o what_o sense_n or_o notion_n can_v this_o man_n be_v say_v to_o have_v do_v his_o duty_n or_o to_o lead_v a_o virtuous_a life_n certain_o in_o no_o sense_n at_o all_o for_o as_o to_o one_o three_o part_n of_o his_o duty_n which_o be_v indeed_o as_o considerable_a at_o least_o if_o not_o more_o than_o either_o of_o the_o other_o he_o be_v a_o notorious_a transgressor_n and_o though_o he_o be_v not_o unjust_a though_o he_o be_v not_o debauch_v virtue_n and_o consequent_o no_o salvation_n but_o beside_o we_o all_o know_v there_o be_v no_o possibility_n of_o live_v a_o holy_a and_o virtuous_a life_n such_o a_o life_n as_o our_o religion_n require_v of_o we_o and_o which_o alone_o will_v stand_v we_o in_o stead_n in_o the_o day_n of_o judgement_n without_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o the_o assistance_n of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n and_o we_o all_o know_v likewise_o that_o these_o be_v no_o way_n to_o be_v come_v by_o but_o by_o earnest_n and_o affectionate_a and_o constant_a prayer_n how_o therefore_o be_v it_o possible_a that_o any_o man_n who_o be_v not_o very_o serious_a and_o frequent_a in_o the_o exercise_n of_o devotion_n shall_v ever_o be_v able_a to_o live_v a_o holy_a life_n he_o may_v indeed_o by_o his_o own_o study_n and_o for_o his_o own_o interest_n possess_v himself_o of_o such_o good_a quality_n as_o may_v make_v a_o fair_a show_n in_o the_o world_n and_o recommend_v he_o to_o all_o about_o he_o but_o the_o inward_a principle_n of_o goodness_n and_o holiness_n he_o can_v have_v because_o he_o do_v not_o practice_v the_o mean_n of_o obtain_v the_o grace_n and_o spirit_n of_o god_n by_o which_o
