must_v at_o least_o acquiesce_v though_o they_o be_v not_o infallible_a there_o be_v still_o a_o sort_n of_o a_o appeal_n to_o be_v make_v to_o the_o sovereign_n or_o the_o supreme_a legislative_a body_n so_o the_o church_n have_v a_o subaltern_a jurisdiction_n but_o as_o the_o authority_n of_o inferior_a judge_n be_v still_o regulate_v and_o none_o but_o the_o legislator_n themselves_o have_v a_o authority_n equal_a to_o the_o law_n so_o it_o be_v not_o necessary_a for_o the_o preservation_n of_o peace_n and_o order_n that_o the_o decision_n of_o the_o church_n shall_v be_v infallible_a or_o of_o equal_a authority_n with_o the_o scripture_n if_o judge_n do_v so_o manifest_o abuse_v their_o authority_n that_o they_o fall_v into_o rebellion_n and_o treason_n the_o subject_n be_v no_o more_o bind_v to_o consider_v they_o but_o be_v oblige_v to_o resist_v they_o and_o to_o maintain_v their_o obedience_n to_o their_o sovereign_n though_o in_o other_o matter_n their_o judgement_n must_v take_v place_n till_o they_o be_v reverse_v by_o the_o sovereign_n the_o case_n of_o religion_n be_v then_o this_o that_o jesus_n christ_n be_v the_o sovereign_n of_o the_o church_n the_o assembly_n of_o the_o pastor_n be_v only_o a_o subaltern_a judge_n if_o they_o manifest_o oppose_v themselves_o to_o the_o scripture_n which_o be_v the_o law_n of_o christian_n particular_a person_n may_v be_v suppose_v as_o competent_a judge_n of_o that_o as_o in_o civil_a matter_n they_o may_v be_v of_o the_o rebellion_n of_o the_o judge_n and_o in_o that_o case_n they_o be_v bind_v still_o to_o maintain_v their_o obedience_n to_o jesus_n christ_n in_o matter_n indifferent_a christian_n be_v bind_v for_o the_o preservation_n of_o peace_n and_o unity_n to_o acquiesce_v in_o the_o decision_n of_o the_o church_n and_o in_o matter_n just_o doubtful_a or_o of_o small_a consequence_n though_o they_o be_v convince_v that_o the_o pastor_n have_v err_v yet_o they_o be_v oblige_v to_o be_v silent_a and_o to_o bear_v tolerable_a thing_n rather_o than_o make_v a_o breach_n but_o if_o it_o be_v visible_a that_o the_o pastor_n do_v rebel_n against_o the_o sovereign_n of_o the_o church_n i_o mean_v christ_n the_o people_n may_v put_v in_o their_o appeal_n to_o that_o great_a judge_n and_o there_o it_o must_v lie_v if_o the_o church_n do_v use_v this_o authority_n with_o due_a discretion_n and_o the_o people_n follow_v the_o rule_n that_o i_o have_v name_v with_o humility_n and_o modesty_n there_o will_v be_v no_o great_a danger_n of_o many_o division_n but_o this_o be_v the_o great_a secret_a of_o the_o providence_n of_o god_n that_o man_n be_v still_o man_n and_o both_o pastor_n and_o people_n mix_v their_o passion_n and_o interest_n so_o with_o matter_n of_o religion_n that_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o sin_n and_o vice_n still_o in_o the_o world_n so_o that_o it_o appear_v in_o the_o matter_n of_o religion_n as_o well_o as_o in_o other_o thing_n but_o the_o ill_a consequence_n of_o this_o though_o they_o be_v bad_a enough_o yet_o be_v not_o equal_a to_o the_o effect_n that_o ignorant_a superstition_n and_o obedient_a zeal_n have_v produce_v in_o the_o world_n witness_v the_o rebellion_n and_o war_n for_o establish_v the_o worship_n of_o image_n the_o croissade_n against_o the_o saracen_n in_o which_o many_o million_o be_v lose_v those_o against_o heretic_n and_o prince_n depose_v by_o pope_n which_o last_v for_o some_o age_n and_o the_o massacre_n of_o paris_n with_o the_o butchery_n of_o the_o duke_n of_o alva_n in_o the_o last_o age_n and_o that_o of_o ireland_n in_o this_o which_o be_v i_o suppose_v far_o great_a mischief_n than_o any_o that_o can_v be_v imagine_v to_o arise_v out_o of_o a_o small_a diversity_n of_o opinion_n and_o the_o present_a state_n of_o this_o church_n notwithstanding_o all_o those_o unhappy_a rent_n that_o be_v in_o it_o be_v a_o much_o more_o desirable_a thing_n than_o the_o gross_a ignorance_n and_o blind_a superstition_n that_o reign_v in_o italy_n and_o spain_n at_o this_o day_n ix_o all_o these_o reason_v concern_v the_o infallibility_n of_o the_o church_n signify_v nothing_o unless_o we_o can_v certain_o know_v whither_o we_o must_v go_v for_o this_o decision_n for_o while_o one_o party_n show_v we_o that_o it_o must_v be_v in_o the_o pope_n or_o be_v not_o where_o and_o another_o party_n say_v it_o can_v be_v in_o the_o pope_n because_o as_o many_o pope_n have_v err_v so_o this_o be_v a_o doctrine_n that_o be_v not_o know_v in_o the_o church_n for_o a_o thousand_o year_n and_o that_o have_v be_v dispute_v ever_o since_o it_o be_v first_o assert_v we_o be_v in_o the_o right_a to_o believe_v both_o side_n first_o that_o if_o it_o be_v not_o in_o the_o pope_n it_o be_v not_o where_o and_o then_o that_o certain_o it_o it_z not_o in_o the_o pope_n and_o it_o be_v very_o incongruous_a to_o say_v that_o there_o be_v a_o infallible_a authority_n in_o the_o church_n and_o that_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o certain_a where_o one_o must_v seek_v for_o it_o for_o the_o one_o ought_v to_o be_v as_o clear_a as_o the_o other_o and_o it_o be_v also_o plain_a that_o what_o primacy_n soever_o st._n peter_n may_v be_v suppose_v to_o have_v have_v the_o scripture_n say_v not_o one_o word_n of_o his_o successor_n at_o rome_n so_o at_o least_o this_o be_v not_o so_o clear_a as_o a_o matter_n of_o this_o consequence_n must_v have_v be_v if_o christ_n have_v intend_v to_o have_v lodge_v such_o a_o authority_n in_o that_o see._n x._o it_o be_v no_o less_o incongruous_a to_o say_v that_o this_o infallibility_n be_v in_o a_o general_n council_n for_o it_o must_v be_v somewhere_o else_o otherwise_o it_o will_v return_v only_o to_o the_o church_n by_o some_o start_v and_o after_o long_a interval_n and_o as_o it_o be_v not_o in_o the_o church_n for_o the_o first_o 320_o year_n so_o it_o have_v not_o be_v in_o the_o church_n these_o last_o 120_o year_n it_o be_v plain_a also_o that_o there_o be_v no_o regulation_n give_v in_o the_o scripture_n concern_v this_o great_a assembly_n who_o have_v a_o right_a to_o come_v and_o vote_n and_o what_o forfeit_v this_o right_a and_o what_o number_n must_v concur_v in_o a_o decision_n to_o assure_v we_o of_o the_o infallibility_n of_o the_o judgement_n it_o be_v certain_a there_o be_v never_o a_o general_n council_n of_o all_o the_o pastor_n of_o the_o church_n for_o those_o of_o which_o we_o have_v the_o act_n be_v only_o the_o council_n of_o the_o roman_a empire_n but_o for_o those_o church_n that_o be_v in_o the_o south_n of_o africa_n or_o the_o eastern_a part_n of_o asia_n beyond_o the_o bound_n of_o the_o roman_a empire_n as_o they_o can_v not_o be_v summon_v by_o the_o emperor_n authority_n so_o it_o be_v certain_a none_o of_o they_o be_v present_a unless_o one_o or_o two_o of_o persia_n at_o nice_a which_o perhaps_o be_v a_o corner_n of_o persia_n belong_v to_o the_o empire_n and_o unless_o it_o can_v be_v prove_v that_o the_o pope_n have_v a_o absolute_a authority_n to_o cut_v off_o whole_a church_n from_o their_o right_n of_o come_v to_o council_n there_o have_v be_v no_o general_n council_n these_o last_o 700._o year_n in_o the_o world_n ever_o since_o the_o bishop_n of_o rome_n have_v excommunicate_v all_o the_o greek_a church_n upon_o such_o trifle_a reason_n that_o their_o own_o writer_n be_v now_o ashamed_a of_o they_o and_o i_o will_v ask_v no_o more_o of_o a_o man_n of_o a_o competent_a understanding_n to_o satisfy_v he_o that_o the_o council_n of_o trent_n be_v no_o it_o be_v say_v that_o this_o infallibility_n be_v to_o be_v seek_v for_o in_o the_o tradition_n of_o the_o doctrine_n in_o all_o age_n and_o that_o every_o particular_a person_n must_v examine_v this_o here_o be_v a_o sea_n before_o he_o and_o instead_o of_o examine_v the_o small_a book_n of_o the_o new_a testament_n he_o be_v involve_v in_o a_o study_n that_o must_v cost_v a_o man_n a_o age_n to_o go_v through_o it_o and_o many_o of_o the_o age_n through_o which_o he_o carry_v this_o enquiry_n be_v so_o dark_a and_o have_v produce_v so_o few_o writer_n at_o least_o so_o few_o be_v there_o be_v much_o weight_n to_o be_v lay_v on_o this_o way_n of_o conveyance_n a_o tradition_n concern_v matter_n of_o fact_n that_o all_o people_n see_v be_v less_o apt_a to_o fail_v than_o a_o tradition_n of_o point_n of_o speculation_n and_o yet_o we_o see_v very_o
or_o in_o the_o way_n of_o war_n against_o their_o neighbour_n to_o such_o a_o single_a person_n or_o to_o such_o a_o body_n of_o man_n as_o they_o think_v fit_a to_o trust_v with_o this_o and_o in_o the_o management_n of_o this_o civil_a society_n great_a distinction_n be_v to_o be_v make_v between_o the_o power_n of_o make_v law_n for_o the_o regulate_v the_o conduct_n of_o it_o and_o the_o not_o with_o those_o who_o have_v only_o the_o executive_a which_o be_v plain_o a_o trust_n when_o it_o be_v separate_v from_o the_o legislative_a power_n and_o all_o trust_n by_o their_o nature_n can_v be_v suppose_v by_o the_o principle_n of_o natural_a religion_n that_o god_n have_v authorise_v any_o one_o form_n of_o government_n any_o other_o way_n than_o as_o the_o general_a rule_n of_o order_n and_o of_o justice_n oblige_v all_o man_n not_o to_o subvert_v constitution_n nor_o disturb_v the_o peace_n of_o mankind_n or_o invade_v those_o right_n with_o which_o the_o law_n may_v have_v vest_v some_o person_n for_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o as_o private_a contract_n lodge_v or_o translate_v private_a right_n so_o the_o public_a law_n can_v likewise_o lodge_v such_o right_n prerogative_n and_o revenue_n in_o those_o under_o who_o protection_n they_o put_v themselves_o and_o in_o such_o a_o manner_n that_o they_o may_v come_v to_o have_v as_o good_a a_o title_n to_o these_o as_o any_o private_a person_n can_v have_v to_o his_o property_n so_o that_o it_o become_v a_o act_n of_o high_a injustice_n and_o violence_n to_o invade_v these_o which_o be_v so_o far_o a_o great_a sin_n than_o any_o such_o action_n will_v be_v against_o a_o private_a person_n as_o the_o public_a peace_n and_o order_n be_v preferable_a to_o all_o private_a consideration_n whatsoever_o so_o that_o in_o truth_n the_o principle_n of_o natural_a religion_n give_v those_o that_o be_v in_o authority_n no_o power_n at_o all_o but_o they_o do_v only_o secure_v they_o in_o the_o possession_n of_o that_o which_o be_v they_o by_o law._n and_o as_o no_o consideration_n of_o religion_n can_v bind_v i_o to_o pay_v another_o more_o than_o i_o indeed_o owe_v he_o but_o do_v only_o bind_v i_o more_o strict_o to_o pay_v what_o i_o owe_v so_o the_o consideration_n of_o religion_n do_v indeed_o bring_v subject_n under_o strict_a obligation_n to_o pay_v all_o due_a allegiance_n and_o submission_n to_o their_o prince_n but_o they_o do_v not_o at_o all_o extend_v that_o allegiance_n further_o than_o the_o law_n carry_v it_o and_o though_o a_o man_n have_v no_o divine_a right_o to_o his_o property_n but_o have_v acquire_v it_o by_o human_a mean_n such_o as_o succession_n or_o industry_n yet_o he_o have_v a_o security_n for_o the_o enjoyment_n of_o it_o from_o a_o divine_a right_n so_o though_o prince_n have_v no_o immediate_a warrant_n from_o heaven_n either_o for_o their_o original_a title_n or_o for_o the_o extent_n of_o they_o yet_o they_o be_v secure_v in_o the_o possession_n of_o they_o by_o the_o principle_n and_o rule_n of_o natural_a religion_n v._o it_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v that_o as_o a_o private_a person_n can_v bind_v himself_o to_o another_o man_n service_n by_o different_a degree_n either_o as_o a_o ordinary_a servant_n for_o wage_n or_o as_o one_o appropriate_a for_o a_o long_a time_n as_o a_o apprentice_n or_o by_o a_o total_a give_v himself_o up_o to_o another_o as_o in_o the_o case_n of_o slavery_n in_o all_o which_o case_n the_o general_a name_n of_o master_n may_v be_v equal_o use_v yet_o the_o degree_n of_o his_o power_n be_v to_o be_v judge_v by_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o contract_n so_o likewise_o body_n of_o man_n can_v give_v themselves_o up_o in_o different_a degree_n to_o the_o conduct_n of_o other_o and_o therefore_o though_o all_o those_o may_v carry_v the_o same_o name_n of_o king_n yet_o every_a one_o power_n be_v to_o be_v take_v from_o the_o measure_n of_o that_o authority_n which_o be_v lodge_v in_o he_o and_o not_o from_o any_o general_a speculation_n found_v on_o some_o equivocal_a term_n such_o as_o king_n sovereign_a or_o sapream_a vi_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o god_n as_o the_o creator_n and_o governor_n of_o the_o world_n may_v set_v up_o who_o he_o will_v to_o rule_v over_o other_o man_n but_o this_o declaration_n of_o his_o will_n must_v be_v make_v evident_a by_o prophet_n or_o other_o extraordinary_a man_n send_v of_o he_o who_o have_v some_o manifest_a proof_n of_o the_o divine_a authority_n that_o be_v commit_v to_o they_o on_o such_o occasion_n and_o upon_o such_o person_n declare_v the_o will_n of_o god_n in_o favour_n of_o any_o other_o that_o declaration_n be_v to_o be_v submit_v to_o and_o obey_v but_o this_o pretence_n of_o a_o divine_a delegation_n can_v be_v carry_v no_o further_o than_o to_o those_o who_o be_v thus_o express_o mark_v out_o and_o be_v unjust_o claim_v by_o those_o who_o can_v prove_v no_o such_o declaration_n to_o have_v be_v ever_o make_v in_o favour_n of_o they_o or_o their_o family_n not_o do_v it_o appear_v reasonable_a to_o conclude_v from_o their_o be_v in_o possession_n that_o it_o be_v the_o will_n of_o god_n that_o it_o shall_v be_v so_o this_o justify_v all_o usurper_n when_o they_o be_v successful_a vii_o the_o measure_n of_o power_n and_o by_o consequence_n of_o obedience_n must_v be_v take_v from_o the_o express_a law_n of_o any_o state_n or_o body_n of_o man_n from_o the_o oath_n that_o they_o swear_v or_o from_o immemorial_n prescription_n and_o a_o long_a possession_n which_o both_o give_v a_o title_n and_o in_o a_o long_a tract_n of_o time_n make_v a_o bad_a one_o become_v good_a since_o prescription_n when_o it_o pass_v the_o memory_n of_o man_n and_o be_v not_o dispute_v by_o any_o other_o pretender_n give_v by_o the_o common_a sense_n of_o all_o man_n a_o just_a and_o good_a title_n so_o upon_o the_o whole_a matter_n the_o degree_n of_o all_o civil_a authority_n be_v to_o be_v take_v either_o from_o express_a law_n immemorial_n custom_n or_o from_o particular_a oath_n which_o the_o subject_n swear_v to_o their_o prince_n this_o be_v still_o to_o be_v lay_v down_o for_o a_o principle_n that_o in_o all_o the_o dispute_n between_o power_n and_o liberty_n power_n must_v always_o be_v prove_v but_o liberty_n prove_v itself_o the_o one_o be_v found_v only_o upon_o a_o be_v examine_v by_o the_o scripture_n it_o be_v clear_a that_o all_o the_o passage_n that_o be_v in_o the_o old_a testament_n be_v not_o to_o be_v make_v use_n of_o in_o this_o matter_n of_o ●●ther_n side_n for_o as_o the_o land_n of_o canaan_n be_v give_v to_o the_o jew_n by_o a_o immediate_a grant_n from_o heaven_n so_o god_n reserve_v still_o this_o to_o himself_o and_o to_o the_o declaration_n service_n that_o we_o offer_v up_o pursuant_n to_o these_o be_v not_o only_o to_o be_v consider_v as_o they_o be_v just_a thought_n of_o god_n and_o act_n suitable_a to_o those_o thought_n but_o as_o they_o be_v idea_n that_o tend_v both_o to_o elevate_v and_o purify_v our_o own_o nature_n for_o the_o thought_n of_o god_n be_v the_o seed_n of_o all_o truth_n and_o virtue_n in_o we_o which_o be_v deep_o root_v in_o we_o make_v we_o become_v conformable_a to_o the_o divine_a nature_n so_o that_o the_o sin_n of_o idolatry_n consist_v in_o this_o that_o our_o idea_n of_o god_n be_v corrupt_v he_o be_v either_o defraud_v of_o that_o honour_n which_o though_o due_a to_o he_o be_v transfer_v to_o another_o or_o be_v dishonour_v by_o a_o worship_n that_o be_v unsuitable_a to_o his_o nature_n and_o we_o also_o by_o form_v wrong_a idea_n of_o the_o object_n of_o our_o worship_n become_v corrupt_v by_o they_o nothing_o raise_v the_o soul_n of_o man_n more_o than_o sublime_a thought_n of_o god_n greatness_n and_o glory_n and_o nothing_o perfect_v it_o more_o than_o just_a notion_n of_o his_o wisdom_n and_o goodness_n on_o the_o contrary_a nothing_o debase_v our_o nature_n more_o than_o the_o offer_v our_o worship_n and_o service_n to_o a_o be_v that_o be_v low_a and_o unworthy_a of_o it_o or_o the_o depress_v the_o supreme_a be_v in_o our_o thought_n or_o worship_n to_o somewhat_o that_o be_v like_o ourselves_o or_o perhaps_o worse_o therefore_o the_o design_n of_o true_a religion_n be_v the_o form_n in_o we_o such_o notion_n as_o may_v exalt_v and_o sanctify_v our_o nature_n as_o well_o as_o the_o raise_n a_o tribute_n to_o the_o author_n of_o our_o be_v that_o be_v in_o some_o sort_n worthy_a of_o he_o the_o sin_n of_o idolatry_n be_v upon_o this_o account_n chief_o forbid_v in_o scripture_n because_o it_o corrupt_v our_o idea_n of_o god_n and_o by_o a_o natural_a tendency_n this_o must_v likewise_o corrupt_v our_o nature_n when_o we_o either_o raise_v up_o a_o idol_n so_o far_o in_o our_o thought_n as_o to_o fancy_v it_o a_o god_n or_o depress_v god_n so_o far_o as_o to_o make_v he_o a_o idol_n for_o these_o two_o species_n of_o idolatry_n have_v both_o the_o same_o effect_n on_o we_o and_o as_o a_o wound_n in_o a_o man_n vital_n be_v much_o more_o destructive_a than_o any_o how_o deep_a and_o dangerous_a soever_o that_o be_v in_o his_o limb_n since_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o he_o to_o recover_v of_o the_o one_o but_o not_o of_o the_o other_o so_o idolatry_n corrupt_v religion_n in_o its_o source_n thus_o idolatry_n in_o its_o moral_n and_o unchangeable_a nature_n be_v the_o honour_v any_o creature_n as_o a_o god_n or_o the_o imagine_v that_o god_n be_v such_o a_o be_v as_o the_o other_o creature_n be_v and_o this_o have_v be_v a_o sin_n though_o no_o law_n against_o it_o have_v ever_o be_v give_v to_o mankind_n but_o the_o light_n and_o law_n of_o nature_n vii_o but_o after_o all_o this_o there_o be_v different_a degree_n in_o this_o sin_n for_o the_o true_a notion_n of_o god_n be_v this_o that_o he_o comprehend_v all_o perfection_n in_o his_o essence_n the_o ascribe_v all_o these_o to_o a_o creature_n be_v the_o high_a degree_n of_o idolatry_n but_o the_o ascribe_v any_o one_o of_o these_o infinite_a perfection_n or_o which_o be_v all_o one_o with_o relation_n to_o our_o action_n the_o do_v any_o thing_n which_o import_v or_o be_v understand_v to_o import_n it_o be_v likewise_o idolatry_n though_o of_o a_o low_a degree_n of_o guilt_n so_o likewise_o the_o imagine_v that_o the_o true_a god_n be_v no_o other_o than_o as_o a_o idol_n represent_v he_o to_o be_v be_v the_o high_a degree_n of_o the_o other_o species_n of_o idolatry_n but_o the_o conceive_v he_o as_o have_v a_o body_n in_o which_o his_o eternal_a mind_n dwell_v or_o fancy_v that_o any_o strange_a virtue_n from_o he_o dwell_v in_o any_o body_n to_o such_o a_o degree_n as_o to_o make_v that_o body_n the_o proper_a object_n of_o worship_n unless_o he_o have_v assure_v we_o that_o he_o be_v real_o unite_v to_o that_o body_n and_o dwell_v in_o it_o which_o be_v the_o case_n of_o the_o cloud_n of_o glory_n under_o the_o old_a testament_n and_o much_o more_o of_o the_o humane_a nature_n of_o christ_n under_o the_o new_a this_o be_v likewise_o idolatry_n for_o in_o all_o these_o it_o be_v plain_a that_o the_o true_a idea_n of_o god_n and_o the_o principle_n of_o religion_n be_v corrupt_v viii_o there_o be_v two_o principle_n in_o the_o nature_n of_o man_n that_o make_v he_o very_o apt_a to_o fall_v into_o idolatry_n either_o inward_a or_o outward_a the_o first_o be_v the_o weakness_n of_o most_o people_n mind_n which_o be_v so_o sink_v into_o gross_a phantasm_n and_o sensible_a object_n that_o they_o be_v scarce_o capable_a to_o raise_v their_o thought_n to_o pure_a and_o spiritual_a idea_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v apt_a either_o to_o forget_v religion_n quite_o or_o to_o entertain_v it_o by_o object_n that_o be_v visible_a and_o sensible_a the_o other_o be_v that_o man_n appetite_n and_o passion_n be_v for_o the_o most_o part_n too_o strong_a for_o they_o and_o these_o not_o be_v reconcilable_a to_o the_o true_a idea_n of_o a_o
