his_o majesty_n interest_n ask_v they_o if_o those_o unhappy_a difference_n that_o be_v arisen_a between_o the_o king_n and_o his_o parliament_n can_v not_o be_v compose_v but_o shall_v break_v out_o into_o a_o war_n who_o they_o will_v stand_v by_o his_o majesty_n or_o the_o parliament_n whereupon_o they_o all_o cry_v out_o with_o one_o consent_n by_o the_o king_n we_o will_v stand_v by_o the_o king_n against_o all_o opposer_n whatsoever_o gentleman_n say_v the_o colonel_n i_o thank_v you_o for_o this_o declaration_n which_o you_o have_v now_o make_v of_o your_o loyal_a intention_n i_o hope_v your_o heart_n have_v go_v with_o your_o word_n therein_o and_o that_o you_o will_v make_v good_a your_o promise_n when_o his_o majesty_n occasion_n shall_v require_v it_o whereupon_o they_o generosity_n and_o in_o the_o year_n 1651._o the_o parliament_n out_o of_o a_o deep_a sense_n of_o his_o profound_a wisdom_n appoint_v he_o january_n 20._o with_o twenty_o person_n more_o to_o sit_v as_o a_o committee_n to_o consider_v of_o the_o inconvenience_n which_o be_v in_o the_o law_n and_o the_o mischief_n which_o frequent_o arise_v from_o the_o delay_n and_o other_o irregularity_n in_o the_o administration_n thereof_o and_o order_v they_o to_o report_v their_o opinion_n therein_o to_o the_o house_n not_o long_o after_o this_o the_o scene_n of_o affair_n alter_v and_o cromwell_n ambitious_a design_n for_o usurp_a the_o supreme_a power_n be_v now_o ripe_a he_o resolve_v to_o put_v they_o into_o execution_n and_o as_o the_o first_o essay_n take_v upon_o he_o to_o dissolve_v that_o remnant_n of_o a_o parliament_n to_o which_o purpose_n on_o the_o 20_o of_o april_n 1653._o he_o enter_v the_o house_n attend_v by_o some_o of_o his_o principal_a officer_n and_o deliver_v several_a reason_n why_o they_o ought_v to_o be_v dissolve_v and_o a_o period_n put_v to_o their_o sit_v which_o be_v immediate_o do_v the_o speaker_n with_o all_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o member_n some_o through_o fear_n and_o other_o by_o force_n present_o depart_v the_o house_n all_o the_o nation_n rejoice_v thereat_o and_o scarce_o any_o man_n grieve_v for_o their_o dissolution_n but_o themselves_o every_o one_o affirm_v that_o although_o probable_o the_o nation_n can_v not_o be_v much_o better_v by_o this_o change_n yet_o worse_a can_v not_o possible_o befall_v it_o however_o cromwell_n do_v not_o think_v it_o time_n as_o yet_o to_o take_v the_o government_n absolute_o into_o his_o own_o hand_n wherefore_o he_o summon_v another_o convention_n somewhat_o like_o the_o former_a to_o which_o he_o give_v the_o name_n of_o a_o parliament_n whereupon_o sir_n a._n be_v look_v upon_o by_o his_o countryman_n as_o the_o fit_a person_n to_o oppose_v and_o baffle_v any_o extravagant_a motion_n or_o design_n that_o shall_v be_v propose_v to_o or_o carry_v on_o by_o they_o be_v return_v to_o serve_v therein_o for_o his_o native_a county_n of_o wilts_n this_o convention_n have_v several_a strange_a thing_n under_o debate_n that_o will_v have_v be_v very_o dangerous_a and_o prejudicial_a to_o the_o nation_n and_o he_o act_v the_o part_n of_o a_o wise_a politician_n and_o a_o true_a english_a man_n in_o render_v their_o debate_n ineffectual_a and_o to_o no_o purpose_n as_o well_o by_o his_o ingenious_a argument_n draw_v from_o scripture_n and_o reason_n as_o the_o interest_n he_o have_v in_o the_o gentleman_n of_o the_o country_n whereby_o he_o engage_v they_o to_o appear_v also_o against_o the_o design_n which_o be_v then_o carry_v on_o whereat_o the_o contrary_a faction_n be_v strange_o exasperate_v storm_v exceed_o and_o push_v forward_o their_o design_n with_o the_o great_a fury_n whereupon_o the_o rest_n although_o the_o majority_n fear_v to_o be_v undermine_v by_o their_o lay_n hold_v of_o a_o opportunity_n to_o assemble_v themselves_o in_o their_o absence_n any_o forty_o be_v a_o quorum_fw-la and_o thereby_o brood_v however_o cromwell_n resolve_v that_o whoever_o lose_v he_o will_v be_v no_o loser_n by_o this_o dissolution_n wherefore_o he_o by_o a_o strange_a way_n of_o reason_v pretend_v that_o by_o this_o mean_v the_o whole_a supreme_a power_n and_o authority_n of_o the_o three_o nation_n both_o civil_a and_o military_a be_v of_o course_n devolve_v into_o his_o hand_n and_o thereupon_o call_v a_o council_n of_o officer_n to_o consult_v about_o settle_v the_o government_n who_o after_o several_a debate_n resolve_v to_o have_v a_o commonwealth_n in_o a_o single_a person_n which_o person_n shall_v be_v oliver_n cromwell_n by_o the_o name_n of_o lord_n protector_n etc._n etc._n whereupon_o cromwell_n call_v a_o parliament_n which_o meet_v september_n 3._o 1654._o whereof_o sir_n a._n be_v choose_v a_o member_n the_o country_n suppose_v he_o to_o be_v the_o fit_a man_n they_o can_v choose_v to_o obviate_v and_o undermine_v cromwell_n tyrannical_a design_n cromwell_n make_v a_o politic_a smooth_a speech_n to_o they_o endeavour_v to_o persuade_v they_o to_o embrace_v his_o interest_n promise_v for_o their_o encouragement_n to_o do_v strange_a thing_n for_o the_o good_a of_o the_o nation_n if_o they_o will_v but_o afford_v he_o their_o assistance_n in_o order_n thereunto_o but_o although_o some_o of_o the_o member_n be_v man_n for_o his_o turn_n and_o be_v resolve_v to_o serve_v he_o in_o his_o ambitious_a design_n to_o the_o uttermost_a of_o their_o power_n although_o themselves_o and_o their_o posterity_n suffer_v for_o it_o yet_o sir_n anthony_n and_o abundance_n of_o other_o be_v too_o wise_a to_o be_v impose_v upon_o and_o too_o courageous_a to_o be_v hector_v into_o a_o compliance_n so_o that_o be_v the_o majority_n they_o over-numbered_a those_o who_o be_v for_o comply_v with_o the_o usurper_n interest_n and_o render_v his_o hope_n in_o that_o parliament_n vain_a and_o ineffectual_a whereat_o the_o tyrant_n be_v enrage_v to_o see_v his_o expectation_n extreme_o necessitate_v for_o money_n and_o have_v a_o long_a desire_n to_o have_v his_o power_n confirm_v to_o he_o by_o the_o consent_n of_o the_o people_n hope_v that_o a_o second_o representative_a will_v grant_v he_o that_o which_o the_o first_o refuse_v issue_n out_o his_o writ_n for_o the_o election_n of_o another_o parliament_n yet_o remember_v the_o speech_n and_o carriage_n of_o sir_n anthony_n and_o some_o other_o member_n of_o the_o late_a parliament_n he_o give_v secret_a direction_n to_o the_o sheriff_n of_o the_o several_a county_n to_o use_v their_o utmost_a endeavour_n to_o prevent_v if_o possible_a their_o be_v choose_v or_o return_v to_o serve_v in_o that_o parliament_n however_o the_o country_n strive_v to_o please_v themselves_o rather_o then_o the_o protector_n and_o prefer_v their_o own_o interest_n before_o cromwell_n return_v sir_n anthony_n and_o most_o of_o the_o other_o member_n that_o oppose_v the_o protector_n design_n in_o the_o late_a parliament_n to_o serve_v in_o this_o whereby_o this_o stratagem_n fail_v of_o produce_v its_o desire_a effect_n which_o force_v he_o to_o take_v new_a measure_n and_o invent_v the_o follow_a shift_n viz._n that_o every_o member_n before_o he_o be_v to_o sit_v in_o the_o house_n be_v impose_v upon_o solemn_o to_o engage_v himself_o by_o promise_n not_o to_o act_v any_o thing_n prejudicial_a to_o the_o present_a government_n but_o fear_v lest_o this_o device_n shall_v not_o keep_v out_o enough_o to_o make_v the_o parliament_n pliable_a and_o fit_a for_o his_o purpose_n he_o
