whoever_o set_v up_o against_o his_o royal_a highness_n title_n must_v have_v at_o least_o fifty_o thousand_o horse_n and_o foot_n constant_o in_o arm_n to_o defend_v himself_o and_o keep_v the_o crown_n on_o his_o head_n for_o the_o duke_n be_v a_o excellent_a soldier_n a_o gentleman_n of_o personal_a valour_n and_o resolution_n a_o prince_n of_o great_a conduct_n and_o interest_n belove_v both_o abroad_o and_o at_o home_n therefore_o can_v want_v supply_n from_o his_o friend_n here_o or_o the_o aid_n of_o foreign_a prince_n at_o least_o of_o those_o who_o be_v ally_v to_o he_o to_o assist_v he_o in_o recover_v his_o right_n which_o perhaps_o may_v entail_n upon_o we_o another_o war_n for_o fifty_o year_n and_o the_o misery_n attend_v the_o same_o such_o as_o that_o former_o between_o the_o two_o house_n of_o york_n and_o lancaster_n and_o if_o such_o a_o army_n must_v be_v raise_v though_o no_o war_n happen_v must_v not_o the_o people_n of_o england_n pay_v they_o and_o what_o that_o will_v cost_v or_o what_o arbitrary_a power_n that_o prince_n may_v set_v up_o that_o have_v such_o a_o army_n at_o his_o devotion_n i_o leave_v to_o judgement_n consider_v if_o those_o that_o advise_v to_o this_o course_n of_o procedure_n be_v friend_n to_o their_o country_n and_o the_o protestant_a religion_n take_v care_n to_o preserve_v the_o liberty_n and_o property_n of_o the_o subject_a or_o rather_o whether_o they_o be_v not_o such_o as_o put_v we_o upon_o method_n to_o destroy_v they_o all_o lay_v we_o open_v to_o arbitrary_a power_n as_o we_o be_v in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o late_a horrid_a rebellion_n and_o to_o all_o the_o plundering_n freequarter_n tax_n of_o 60000_o l._n per_fw-la month_n as_o be_v raise_v by_o oliver_n and_o his_o council_n without_o a_o parliament_n sequestration_n decimation_n imprisonment_n banishment_n etc._n etc._n god_n know_v how_o many_o mischief_n more_o may_v ensue_v upon_o such_o force_n be_v raise_v and_o maintain_v as_o a_o stand_a army_n among_o we_o as_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a to_o be_v keep_v on_o foot_n if_o the_o succession_n be_v alter_v i_o can_v believe_v any_o honest_a man_n who_o be_v real_o a_o protestant_n loyal_a to_o the_o king_n love_v his_o country_n and_o desire_v its_o interest_n happiness_n and_o peace_n especial_o if_o he_o live_v in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o late_a intestine_a war_n and_o behold_v the_o misery_n the_o nation_n then_o groan_v under_o can_v or_o will_v if_o he_o have_v any_o estate_n or_o trade_n ever_o desire_v a_o change_n of_o government_n in_o england_n or_o a_o necessity_n of_o have_v a_o stand_a army_n to_o support_v that_o government_n which_o necessary_o this_o bill_n desire_v for_o alter_v the_o succession_n must_v have_v therefore_o none_o but_o some_o few_o malcontent_n or_o such_o as_o desire_v the_o destruction_n of_o the_o protestant_a religion_n will_v pursue_v the_o same_o any_o further_o have_v do_v with_o this_o point_n and_o show_v how_o ridiculous_a it_o be_v for_o man_n to_o distract_v their_o mind_n with_o the_o fear_n or_o apprehension_n of_o his_o majesty_n govern_v arbitrary_o i_o proceed_v to_o the_o second_o thing_n propose_v and_o hope_v to_o demonstrate_v by_o reason_n that_o we_o be_v in_o as_o little_a danger_n of_o popery_n prevail_v howbeit_o a_o popish_a successor_n hereafter_o shall_v happen_v to_o inherit_v the_o imperial_a crown_n of_o this_o realm_n before_o i_o enter_v upon_o this_o give_v i_o leave_v for_o my_o own_o justification_n and_o to_o prevent_v be_v censure_v by_o the_o reader_n solemn_o to_o declare_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o almighty_a god_n and_o the_o whole_a world_n that_o i_o be_o a_o protestant_n and_o have_v be_v breed_v up_o in_o that_o religion_n from_o my_o youth_n i_o be_o so_o far_o from_o be_v a_o papist_n that_o to_o my_o remembrance_n i_o never_o be_v in_o any_o parish_n church_n chappel_n or_o other_o place_n where_o mass_n be_v say_v or_o the_o popish_a religion_n exercise_v during_o such_o service_n be_v perform_v i_o have_v a_o equal_a love_n and_o esteem_v for_o all_o protestant_n though_o of_o different_a persuasion_n so_o that_o they_o be_v conscientious_a and_o religious_a and_o submit_v to_o government_n and_o i_o will_v have_v they_o allow_v all_o liberty_n so_o long_o as_o they_o use_v it_o not_o to_o the_o disturbance_n of_o public_a peace_n or_o the_o government_n of_o church_n and_o state_n therefore_o hope_v a_o charitable_a interpretation_n will_v be_v make_v of_o what_o be_v here_o offer_v to_o consideration_n since_o i_o argue_v not_o out_o of_o any_o approbation_n to_o the_o popish_a religion_n or_o desire_v of_o its_o be_v establish_v here_o or_o to_o live_v to_o see_v a_o popish_a king_n reign_v over_o we_o nor_o out_o of_o any_o prejudice_n to_o any_o protestant_a dissenter_n but_o mere_o to_o quiet_v the_o mind_n of_o those_o who_o distract_v themselves_o with_o jealousy_n of_o popery_n overrun_v the_o kingdom_n if_o ever_o a_o popish_a successor_n shall_v reign_v over_o we_o know_v how_o dangerus_a it_o may_v be_v to_o the_o protestant_a religion_n for_o protestant_n to_o be_v mislead_v by_o such_o idle_a persuasion_n suppose_v such_o a_o popish_a successor_n shall_v happen_v the_o question_n than_o will_v be_v whether_o that_o prince_n or_o his_o subject_n will_v suffer_v most_o i_o be_o of_o opinion_n that_o a_o prince_n of_o that_o religion_n will_v find_v himself_o very_o uneasy_a and_o reign_v with_o great_a difficulty_n over_o the_o english_a and_o scotch_a nation_n whatever_o he_o may_v do_v over_o ireland_n there_o be_v in_o the_o two_o former_a one_o hundred_o protestant_n for_o one_o papist_n though_o in_o ireland_n perhaps_o there_o be_v ten_o papist_n for_o one_o protestant_n and_o yet_o even_o in_o that_o kingdom_n will_v it_o not_o be_v in_o his_o power_n to_o establish_v the_o romish_a religion_n or_o invade_v his_o subject_n liberty_n and_o property_n much_o less_o to_o hurt_v we_o in_o england_n in_o either_o of_o these_o particular_n it_o have_v be_v observe_v in_o history_n that_o prince_n of_o the_o weak_a title_n have_v always_o yield_v to_o the_o best_a law_n comply_v with_o their_o people_n and_o compound_v with_o they_o for_o the_o government_n if_o a_o popish_a prince_n ever_o happen_v to_o reign_v in_o england_n though_o he_o be_v right_o and_o lawful_a heir_n both_o by_o birth_n and_o succession_n yet_o will_v his_o religion_n render_v he_o suspect_v by_o his_o people_n of_o have_v a_o design_n to_o change_v they_o and_o invade_v their_o property_n consist_v much_o in_o abbey_n and_o monastery_n land_n so_o they_o will_v always_o keep_v he_o as_o uneasy_a as_o they_o can_v and_o never_o give_v he_o revenue_n sufficient_a to_o maintain_v such_o power_n and_o force_n as_o shall_v endanger_v they_o and_o when_o the_o king_n to_o who_o i_o beseech_v almighty_a god_n to_o great_a a_o long_a life_n and_o happy_a reign_n shall_v happen_v to_o die_v his_o whole_a revenue_n except_v about_o 450000_o l._n per_fw-la annum_fw-la determine_v with_o he_o so_o that_o if_o his_o royal_a highness_n survive_v he_o and_o be_v king_n he_o will_v not_o with_o all_o his_o own_o present_a revenue_n join_v to_o that_o of_o the_o crown_n have_v above_o 550000_o l._n per_fw-la annum_fw-la how_o can_v any_o rational_a man_n than_o believe_v that_o with_o that_o revenue_n he_o will_v be_v able_a to_o raise_v and_o maintain_v such_o force_n as_o must_v necessary_o be_v keep_v on_o foot_n for_o his_o own_o security_n if_o he_o go_v about_o to_o change_v the_o government_n or_o alter_v the_o religion_n of_o the_o kingdom_n establish_v by_o law_n our_o present_a king_n though_o he_o have_v have_v a_o revenue_n of_o two_o million_o or_o a_o million_o and_o half_a yearly_o and_o now_o have_v above_o a_o million_o per_fw-la annum_fw-la never_o yet_o attempt_v such_o alteration_n and_o shall_v the_o duke_n of_o york_n suppose_v he_o have_v a_o will_v to_o do_v it_o which_o i_o be_o confident_a he_o neither_o have_v ever_o have_v nor_o will_v have_v be_v able_a to_o establish_v arbitrary_a government_n or_o popery_n with_o
