awe_n to_o obtrude_v they_o to_o the_o father_n of_o spirit_n the_o searcher_n and_o lover_n of_o the_o heart_n i_o may_v arise_v high_o upon_o this_o subject_n and_o demonstrate_v to_o you_o from_o the_o order_n of_o nature_n which_o certain_o the_o lord_n have_v principal_o ordain_v for_o his_o own_o worship_n service_n and_o glory_n that_o the_o heart_n and_o mind_n and_o not_o the_o eye_n common_a sense_n or_o memory_n unless_o in_o so_o far_o as_o be_v requisite_a to_o the_o join_n of_o the_o hearer_n in_o public_a prayer_n ought_v to_o precede_v in_o all_o and_o without_o question_n do_v precede_v in_o the_o first_o acknowledgement_n render_v to_o he_o by_o his_o creature_n but_o i_o neither_o love_n nor_o need_n to_o admix_v such_o reason_n to_o these_o scripture-ground_n already_o adduce_v i_o shall_v therefore_o sum_n up_o this_o argument_n with_o answer_v two_o objection_n viz._n that_o i_o seem_v 1._o to_o forget_v that_o our_o minister_n in_o public_a prayer_n do_v as_o much_o precede_v and_o lead_v the_o people_n devotion_n and_o affection_n by_o their_o conceive_a word_n as_o if_o they_o be_v set_v and_o predevised_a 2._o to_o suppose_v that_o all_o who_o can_v or_o aught_o to_o pray_v in_o heart_n be_v also_o qualify_v to_o a_o suitable_a utterance_n and_o to_o the_o first_o it_o be_v answer_v 1._o that_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o the_o people_n may_v and_o aught_o to_o join_v in_o public_a prayer_n utter_v by_o one_o as_o their_o mouth_n although_o the_o examine_v be_v by_o he_o conceive_v and_o to_o they_o unknown_a until_o expressedâ—_n this_o be_v clear_a from_o the_o practice_n of_o god_n people_n in_o these_o public_a prayer_n of_o david_n solomon_n jehosophat_n and_o other_o already_o mention_v and_o you_o yourself_o lie_v it_o for_o the_o ground_n of_o a_o argument_n viz_o that_o the_o people_n can_v join_v and_o pray_v by_o the_o spirit_n though_o the_o word_n be_v not_o of_o their_o frame_n 2_o that_o although_o our_o minister_n do_v precede_v in_o word_n yet_o see_v the_o people_n be_v gather_v in_o the_o lord_n name_v and_o he_o with_o the_o power_n of_o his_o spirit_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o they_o and_o the_o minister_n be_v call_v and_o appoint_v to_o oversee_v they_o know_v their_o condition_n and_o necessity_n and_o to_o be_v their_o mouth_n towards_o god_n and_o last_o see_v there_o be_v a_o promise_n of_o the_o spirit_n public_a aswell_o as_o private_a assistance_n whereupon_o we_o may_v assure_o confide_v both_o for_o a_o due_a instruction_n sense_n and_o utterance_n in_o the_o minister_n of_o the_o people_n state_n and_o exigence_n and_o a_o sweet_a unite_n of_o their_o heart_n in_o a_o harmonious_a concurrence_n the_o agreeablenesse_n and_o advantage_n of_o conceive_a and_o not_o impose_v prayer_n be_v thereby_o abundant_o conserve_v and_o the_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o minister_n precede_v in_o free_a and_o spirit-directed_n word_n from_o the_o manuduction_n of_o your_o restrict_a form_n manifest_o hold_v forth_o offend_v not_o that_o i_o say_v spirit-directed_n word_n for_o if_o i_o shall_v descrive_v prayer_n in_o the_o utterance_n to_o be_v the_o express_v of_o these_o desire_n which_o through_o the_o spirit_n we_o make_v unto_o god_n in_o the_o name_n of_o jesus_n christ_n for_o thing_n agreeable_a to_o his_o will_n in_o word_n direct_v by_o the_o same_o spirit_n promise_v not_o only_o for_o inward_a motion_n but_o also_o for_o outward_a suitable_a expression_n and_o the_o teach_n of_o god_n be_v sufficient_a and_o may_v be_v forthcoming_a for_o the_o one_o as_o well_o as_o for_o
above_o all_o thing_n plead_v the_o necessity_n and_o alone_a sufficiency_n of_o the_o righteousness_n of_o jesus_n christ_n for_o our_o justification_n but_o to_o restore_v your_o word_n to_o their_o own_o channel_n you_o say_v that_o since_o all_o must_v be_v condemn_v if_o god_n enter_v into_o judgement_n therefore_o god_n give_v his_o son_n unto_o the_o death_n for_o we_o that_o thereby_o we_o 2._o the_o authority_n to_o execute_v judgement_n be_v give_v to_o our_o lord_n as_o the_o mediator_n and_o because_o he_o be_v the_o son_n of_o man_n in_o which_o respect_n he_o be_v not_o the_o principal_a author_n and_o efficient_a but_o only_o the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o our_o justification_n not_o the_o very_a act_n but_o only_o the_o solemn_a declaration_n thereof_o can_v be_v ascrive_v to_o he_o in_o this_o capacity_n unless_o you_o can_v conceive_v that_o our_o lord_n be_v not_o only_o both_o the_o ransom_n and_o the_o accepter_n thereof_o but_o that_o by_o become_v the_o propitiation_n he_o also_o become_v the_o party_n to_o be_v appease_v which_o be_v palpable_o inconsistent_a 3._o the_o plain_a scripture-truth_n in_o this_o point_n be_v that_o our_o lord_n have_v complete_o obey_v the_o will_n of_o god_n and_o be_v make_v perfect_a through_o suffer_v be_v therefore_o high_o exalt_v above_o every_o name_n and_o have_v all_o power_n and_o judgement_n commit_v faith_n whence_o it_o flow_v and_o which_o do_v again_o incite_v to_o the_o sincere_a close_o and_o constant_a study_n of_o holiness_n by_o a_o reciprocal_a influence_n as_o your_o vain_a state_v of_o it_o as_o a_o condition_n in_o our_o justification_n do_v but_o lame_o persuade_v its_o pursuit_n but_o i_o hasten_v to_o the_o last_o part_n of_o your_o discourse_n viz._n that_o it_o be_v upon_o the_o necessity_n of_o holiness_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v solemn_o judge_v justify_v and_o absolve_v at_o the_o last_o day_n i_o can_v now_o enlarge_v upon_o these_o mistake_n that_o be_v again_o by_o you_o crowd_v into_o these_o few_o word_n it_o may_v here_o suffice_v that_o i_o tell_v you_o that_o it_o be_v without_o all_o doubt_n that_o on_o that_o day_n all_o man_n shall_v be_v solemn_o commemorate_v their_o charity_n and_o good_a work_n and_o in_o the_o exceed_a riches_n of_o his_o bounty_n reckon_v his_o own_o grace_n in_o they_o unto_o the_o increase_n of_o their_o reward_n but_o thence_o to_o infer_v that_o it_o be_v upon_o our_o holiness_n that_o we_o be_v justify_v and_o absolve_v in_o god_n sight_n be_v destitute_a of_o all_o truth_n and_o reason_n nay_o the_o very_a figure_n of_o that_o judgement_n wherever_o represent_v in_o scripture_n bear_v only_o in_o order_n to_o believer_n their_o solemn_a reception_n and_o welcome_n from_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n as_o such_o who_o be_v already_o in_o he_o bless_a and_o justify_v and_o by_o he_o redeem_v and_o sanctify_v do_v most_o plain_o and_o powerful_o confute_v it_o and_o thus_o i_o hope_v i_o have_v evident_o demonstrat_fw-la not_o in_o the_o language_n of_o man_n or_o in_o school_n term_n which_o on_o purpose_n i_o have_v decline_v but_o in_o the_o express_a revelation_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o that_o doctrine_n of_o you_o which_o you_o make_v your_o n._n c._n only_o to_o tax_v as_o singular_a in_o its_o phrase_n and_o you_o yourself_o do_v the_o more_o commend_v as_o be_v close_o scriptural_a be_v in_o effect_n both_o vain_a and_o antiscriptural_a in_o matter_n as_o well_o as_o expression_n what_o you_o mean_v by_o prefer_v the_o stile_n of_o the_o catholic_n church_n to_o modern_a and_o scholastical_a expression_n under_o which_o the_o doctrine_n of_o all_o the_o reform_a church_n be_v unavoidable_o comprise_v let_v other_o judge_n but_o as_o for_o the_o abuse_n which_o you_o mention_v viz._n the_o presumption_n of_o such_o who_o love_n to_o hear_v of_o salvation_n by_o the_o death_n of_o christâ—_n provide_v they_o be_v bind_v to_o do_v nothing_o
