favour_n with_o the_o king_n oh_o lord_n what_o a_o great_a god_n be_v thou_o that_o work_v thy_o wonder_n so_o secret_o that_o they_o be_v not_o perceive_v until_o they_o be_v bring_v to_o pass_v and_o finish_v attend_v now_o good_a reader_n to_o this_o story_n follow_v and_o note_v every_o circumstance_n and_o thou_o shall_v at_o the_o end_n perceive_v a_o wonderful_a work_n of_o god_n against_o such_o as_o forget_v he_o and_o his_o benefit_n therefore_o i_o say_v consider_v after_o this_o my_o lord_n percye_n troublesome_a business_n be_v over_o and_o all_o thing_n bring_v to_o a_o end_n then_o mistress_n anne_n bullen_n be_v again_o admit_v court_n to_o the_o court_n where_o she_o flourish_v in_o great_a estimation_n and_o favour_n have_v always_o a_o prime_a grudge_n against_o my_o lord_n cardinal_n for_o break_v the_o contract_n between_o the_o lord_n peircy_n and_o herself_o suppose_v it_o have_v be_v his_o own_o devise_n and_o no_o other_o and_o she_o at_o last_o know_v the_o king_n pleasure_n and_o the_o depth_n of_o his_o secret_n then_o begin_v to_o look_v very_o haughty_o and_o stout_a lack_v no_o manner_n of_o rich_a apparel_n or_o jewel_n that_o money_n can_v purchase_v it_o be_v therefore_o imagine_v by_o many_o through_o the_o court_n that_o she_o be_v in_o such_o favour_n may_v do_v much_o with_o the_o king_n and_o obtain_v any_o suit_n of_o he_o for_o her_o friend_n all_o this_o while_n she_o be_v in_o this_o estimation_n in_o all_o place_n there_o be_v no_o doubt_n but_o good_a queen_n katherine_n have_v this_o gentlewoman_n daily_o attend_v upon_o she_o both_o hear_v by_o report_n and_o see_v with_o her_o eye_n how_o all_o thing_n tend_v against_o her_o good_a ladyship_n although_o she_o seem_v neither_o to_o mistress_n anne_n bullen_n nor_o the_o king_n to_o carry_v any_o spark_n of_o discontent_n or_o displeasure_n but_o accept_v all_o thing_n in_o patience_n good_a part_n and_o with_o great_a wisdom_n and_o much_o patience_n dissemble_v the_o same_o have_v mistress_n anne_n bullen_n in_o more_o estimation_n for_o the_o king_n sake_n than_o when_o she_o be_v with_o she_o before_o declare_v herself_o indeed_o to_o be_v a_o very_a patient_n grissel_n as_o by_o her_o long_a patience_n in_o all_o her_o trouble_n shall_v hereafter_o most_o plain_o appear_v for_o the_o king_n be_v now_o so_o enamour_v of_o this_o young_a gentlewoman_n that_o he_o know_v not_o how_o sufficient_o to_o advance_v she_o this_o be_v perceive_v by_o all_o the_o great_a lord_n of_o the_o court_n who_o bear_v a_o secret_a grudge_n against_o my_o lord_n cardinal_n for_o that_o they_o can_v not_o rule_v in_o the_o kingdom_n as_o they_o will_v for_o he_o because_o he_o be_v dominus_fw-la fac_fw-la totum_fw-la with_o the_o king_n and_o rule_v aswell_o the_o great_a lord_n as_o the_o mean_a subject_n whereat_o they_o take_v a_o occasion_n to_o work_v he_o out_o of_o the_o king_n favour_n and_o consequent_o themselves_o into_o more_o estimation_n and_o after_o long_a and_o secret_a consultation_n with_o themselves_o how_o to_o bring_v this_o matter_n to_o pass_v they_o know_v very_o cardinal_n well_o that_o it_o be_v somewhat_o difficult_a for_o they_o to_o do_v absolute_o of_o themselves_o wherefore_o they_o perceive_v the_o great_a affection_n and_o love_v the_o king_n bear_v to_o mistress_n anne_n bullen_n suppose_v in_o their_o judgement_n that_o she_o will_v be_v a_o fit_a instrument_n to_o bring_v their_o earnest_a intention_n to_o pass_v therefore_o they_o often_o consult_v with_o she_o to_o that_o purpose_n and_o she_o have_v both_o a_o very_a good_a wit_n and_o also_o a_o inward_a grudge_n and_o displeasure_n against_o my_o lord_n cardinal_n be_v ever_o as_o ready_a to_o accomplish_v their_o desire_n as_o they_o be_v themselves_o wherefore_o there_o be_v no_o more_o to_o do_v but_o only_o to_o imagine_v a_o occasion_n to_o work_v their_o malice_n by_o some_o pretend_a circumstance_n then_o do_v they_o daily_o invent_v divers_a device_n how_o to_o effect_v their_o purpose_n but_o the_o enterprise_n thereof_o be_v so_o dangerous_a that_o though_o they_o will_v fain_o have_v attempt_v the_o matter_n with_o the_o king_n yet_o dare_v they_o not_o for_o they_o know_v the_o great_a zeal_n the_o king_n do_v bear_v unto_o the_o cardinal_n and_o this_o they_o know_v very_o well_o that_o if_o the_o matter_n they_o shall_v propound_v against_o he_o be_v not_o ground_v upon_o a_o just_a and_o urgent_a cause_n the_o king_n love_n be_v such_o towards_o he_o and_o his_o wit_n such_o withal_o that_o he_o can_v with_o his_o policy_n vanquish_v all_o their_o enterprise_n and_o then_o after_o that_o requite_v they_o in_o the_o like_a nature_n to_o their_o utter_a ruin_n therefore_o they_o be_v compel_v to_o forbear_v their_o plot_n till_o they_o may_v have_v some_o better_a ground_n to_o work_v upon_o and_o now_o the_o cardinal_n perceive_v the_o great_a zeal_n the_o king_n bear_v to_o this_o gentlewoman_n frame_v himself_o to_o please_v she_o as_o well_o as_o the_o king_n to_o that_o end_n therefore_o he_o prepare_v great_a banquet_n and_o feast_n to_o entertain_v the_o king_n and_o she_o at_o his_o own_o house_n she_o all_o favour_n this_o while_n dissemble_v the_o secret_a grudge_n in_o her_o breast_n now_o the_o cardinal_n begin_v to_o grow_v into_o wonderful_a invention_n not_o hear_v of_o before_o in_o england_n and_o the_o love_n between_o this_o glorious_a lady_n and_o the_o king_n grow_v to_o such_o perfection_n that_o divers_a thing_n be_v imagine_v the_o duke_n of_o bourbon_n stratagem_n and_o victory_n wherein_o the_o french_a king_n be_v take_v prisoner_n now_o the_o duke_n and_o his_o soldier_n be_v in_o great_a want_n misery_n for_o want_n of_o victual_n and_o other_o necessary_n which_o they_o can_v by_o no_o mean_n get_v within_o the_o town_n hereupon_o the_o captain_n and_o soldier_n begin_v to_o grudge_v and_o murmur_v be_v for_o want_n of_o victual_n all_o like_o to_o perish_v and_o be_v in_o this_o extremity_n come_v before_o the_o duke_n and_o say_v sir_n we_o must_v of_o force_n and_o necessity_n yield_v to_o our_o enemy_n and_o better_a be_v it_o for_o we_o so_o to_o do_v then_o to_o starve_v like_o dog_n but_o when_o the_o duke_n hear_v this_o he_o reply_v with_o weep_a tear_n sir_n quoth_v he_o you_o have_v prove_v yourselves_o valiant_a consent_n man_n and_o of_o noble_a heart_n in_o this_o service_n and_o for_o your_o necessity_n whereof_o i_o myself_o do_v participate_v i_o do_v not_o a_o little_a lament_n but_o i_o shall_v desire_v you_o as_o you_o be_v noble_a in_o heart_n and_o courage_n so_o to_o take_v patience_n for_o two_o or_o three_o day_n and_o if_o succour_n come_v not_o then_o from_o the_o king_n of_o england_n as_o i_o doubt_v nothing_o less_o i_o will_v then_o consent_v to_o you_o all_o to_o put_v ourselves_o and_o life_n unto_o the_o mercy_n of_o our_o enemy_n whereunto_o they_o all_o agree_v and_o tarry_v till_o two_o day_n be_v past_a expect_v relief_n from_o the_o king_n then_o the_o duke_n see_v no_o remedy_n call_v his_o noble_a captain_n and_o soldier_n before_o he_o and_o weep_v say_v you_o nobleman_n and_o captain_n we_o must_v yield_v ourselves_o unto_o our_o enemy_n or_o else_o famish_v and_o to_o yield_v the_o town_n and_o ourselves_o i_o know_v well_o the_o cruelty_n of_o our_o enemy_n as_o for_o my_o part_n i_o pass_v not_o for_o their_o cruelty_n for_o i_o shall_v suffer_v death_n i_o know_v very_o well_o most_o cruel_o if_o i_o come_v once_o into_o their_o hand_n it_o be_v not_o therefore_o for_o myself_o that_o i_o do_v lament_v it_o be_v for_o your_o sake_n it_o be_v for_o your_o life_n and_o for_o the_o safeguard_n of_o your_o person_n for_o so_o that_o you_o may_v escape_v your_o enemy_n hand_n i_o will_v willing_o suffer_v death_n good_a companion_n and_o noble_a soldier_n i_o do_v require_v you_o all_o consider_v the_o miserable_a calamity_n and_o danger_n we_o be_v in_o at_o this_o present_a to_o sell_v our_o life_n most_o dear_o rather_o than_o to_o be_v murder_v like_o beast_n therefore_o if_o you_o all_o consent_n with_o i_o we_o will_v take_v upon_o devise_n we_o this_o night_n to_o give_v our_o enemy_n assault_n and_o by_o that_o mean_n we_o may_v either_o escape_v or_o else_o give_v they_o a_o overthrow_n for_o it_o be_v better_a to_o die_v in_o the_o field_n like_o man_n then_o to_o live_v prisoner_n miserable_o in_o captivity_n to_o which_o they_o all_o agree_v then_o quoth_v the_o duke_n you_o all_o perceive_v the_o enemy_n camp_n be_v strong_a and_o there_o be_v no_o way_n to_o enter_v upon_o they_o but_o one_o and_o that_o entry_n be_v plant_v with_o great_a ordnance_n and_o strength_n of_o man_n so_o that_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o attain_v to_o our_o enemy_n that_o way_n to_o fight_v with_o they_o in_o their_o camp_n and_o also_o now_o of_o late_a you_o perceive_v they_o have_v have_v but_o small_a doubt_n of_o we_o in_o regard_n they_o have_v keep_v but_o slender_a watch_n therefore_o my_o advice_n be_v there_o shall_v issue_v out_o of_o the_o town_n in_o the_o dead_a time_n of_o the_o night_n from_o we_o a_o certain_a number_n of_o you_o that_o be_v the_o most_o likely_a to_o assault_v the_o camp_n and_o they_o shall_v give_v the_o assault_n secret_o against_o the_o place_n of_o the_o entry_n which_o be_v most_o strong_a and_o invincible_a which_o force_n and_o valiant_a assault_n shall_v be_v to_o they_o of_o the_o camp_n so_o doubtful_a that_o they_o will_v turn_v the_o strength_n of_o the_o entry_n that_o lie_v over_o against_o your_o assault_n to_o beat_v you_o from_o your_o purpose_n then_o will_v i_o enter_v out_o at_o the_o postern_n gate_n and_o come_v to_o the_o place_n of_o their_o strength_n new_o turn_v and_o there_o ere_o they_o be_v aware_a will_v i_o enter_v and_o fight_v with_o they_o in_o the_o camp_n and_o win_v their_o ordnance_n which_o they_o have_v new_o turn_v and_o beat_v they_o with_o their_o own_o piece_n and_o then_o may_v you_o come_v and_o join_v with_o i_o in_o the_o field_n so_o this_o devise_n please_v they_o all_o wonderful_a well_o and_o they_o do_v then_o prepare_v themselves_o all_o that_o day_n for_o that_o devise_n and_o keep_v themselves_o secret_a and_o close_a without_o any_o noise_n or_o shot_n of_o piece_n in_o the_o town_n which_o give_v the_o enemy_n the_o less_o fear_n of_o the_o assault_n for_o at_o night_n they_o go_v all_o to_o their_o tent_n and_o couch_v quiet_o nothing_o mistrust_v what_o after_o happen_v so_o in_o the_o dead_a of_o the_o night_n when_o they_o all_o be_v at_o rest_n the_o assailents_a issue_v out_o of_o the_o town_n and_o there_o according_a to_o the_o duke_n appointment_n they_o give_v so_o cruel_a and_o fierce_a a_o assault_n that_o they_o in_o the_o camp_n have_v much_o ado_n to_o withstand_v they_o and_o then_o as_o the_o duke_n before_o declare_v they_o within_o be_v compel_v to_o turn_v the_o shot_n that_o night_n lie_v at_o the_o entry_n against_o the_o assault_n then_o issue_v out_o the_o duke_n and_o with_o he_o about_o fifteen_o or_o sixteen_o hundred_o man_n or_o more_o secret_o in_o the_o night_n the_o enemy_n be_v ignorant_a field_n of_o his_o come_n until_o he_o enter_v the_o field_n and_o at_o his_o entry_n he_o take_v all_o the_o ordnance_n that_o lie_v there_o and_o slay_v the_o gunner_n then_o charge_v the_o piece_n against_o the_o enemy_n and_o slay_v they_o wonderful_o and_o cut_v down_o their_o tent_n and_o from_o winchester_n move_v the_o king_n to_o give_v my_o lord_n a_o pension_n of_o four_o thousand_o mark_n out_o of_o winchester_n and_o all_o the_o rest_n to_o be_v distribute_v among_o the_o to_o his_o college_n at_o oxford_n and_o ipswich_n the_o king_n take_v into_o his_o own_o hand_n whereof_o master_n cromwell_n have_v the_o receipt_n and_o government_n before_o by_o my_o lord_n assignment_n wherefore_o it_o be_v think_v very_o necessary_a that_o he_o shall_v have_v the_o same_o still_o who_o execute_v all_o thing_n so_o well_o and_o exact_o that_o he_o be_v have_v in_o great_a estimation_n for_o his_o behaviour_n therein_o now_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o those_o to_o who_o the_o king_n have_v give_v any_o annuity_n or_o fee_n for_o term_n of_o life_n or_o by_o patent_n can_v not_o be_v good_a but_o only_o for_o and_o during_o my_o lord_n life_n for_o as_o much_o as_o the_o king_n have_v no_o long_a estate_n therein_o but_o what_o he_o have_v by_o my_o lord_n attainder_n in_o the_o praemunire_n and_o to_o make_v their_o estate_n good_a and_o sufficient_a there_o be_v no_o other_o way_n but_o to_o obtain_v my_o lord_n confirmation_n of_o their_o patent_n and_o to_o bring_v this_o about_o there_o be_v no_o other_o mean_n but_o by_o master_n cromwell_n who_o be_v think_v the_o fit_a instrument_n for_o this_o purpose_n and_o for_o his_o pain_n therein_o he_o be_v worthy_o reward_v and_o his_o demeanour_n his_o honesty_n and_o wisdom_n be_v such_o that_o the_o king_n take_v great_a notice_n of_o he_o as_o you_o shall_v hereafter_o hear_v still_o the_o lord_n think_v long_o till_o my_o lord_n be_v remove_v further_o off_o the_o king_n way_n wherefore_o among_o other_o of_o the_o lord_n my_o lord_n of_o norfolk_n say_v master_n cromwell_n i_o think_v the_o cardinal_n thy_o master_n make_v no_o haste_n to_o go_v northwards_o tell_v he_o if_o he_o go_v not_o away_o i_o will_v tear_v he_o with_o my_o tooth_n therefore_o i_o will_v advise_v he_o to_o prepare_v away_o with_o speed_n or_o else_o i_o will_v set_v he_o forward_o these_o word_n report_v mr._n cromwell_n to_o my_o lord_n at_o his_o next_o repair_n which_o be_v then_o at_o richmond_n have_v obtain_v licence_n of_o the_o king_n to_o remove_v from_o ashur_n to_o richmond_n and_o in_o the_o evening_n my_o lord_n be_v accustom_v to_o walk_v in_o the_o garden_n and_o i_o be_v with_o he_o stand_v in_o a_o alley_n i_o espy_v certain_a image_n of_o beast_n counterfeit_v in_o timber_n which_o i_o go_v near_a to_o take_v the_o better_a view_n of_o they_o among_o who_o i_o there_o see_v stand_v a_o dun_a cow_n whereat_o i_o most_o muse_v of_o all_o those_o beast_n my_o lord_n then_o sudden_o come_v upon_o i_o unaware_o and_o speak_v to_o i_o say_a what_o have_v you_o spy_v there_o whereat_o you_o look_v so_o earnest_o forsooth_o quoth_v i_o if_o it_o please_v your_o grace_n i_o here_o behold_v these_o image_n which_o i_o suppose_v be_v ordain_v to_o be_v set_v up_o in_o the_o king_n palace_n but_o among_o they_o all_o i_o have_v most_o consider_v this_o cow_n which_o seem_v to_o i_o the_o artificer_n masterpiece_n yea_o marry_o quoth_v my_o lord_n prophecy_n upon_o this_o cow_n hang_v a_o certain_a prophecy_n which_o perhaps_o you_o never_o hear_v of_o i_o will_v show_v you_o there_o be_v a_o say_n when_o the_o cow_n do_v ride_v the_o bull_n scull_n then_o priest_n beware_v thy_o scull_n which_o say_v neither_o my_o lord_n that_o declare_v it_o nor_o i_o that_o hear_v it_o understand_v the_o effect_n although_o the_o compass_n thereof_o be_v work_v and_o then_o like_a to_o be_v bring_v to_o pass_v this_o cow_n the_o king_n give_v by_o reason_n of_o the_o earldom_n of_o richmond_n which_o be_v inheritance_n this_o prophecy_n be_v afterwards_o expound_v in_o this_o manner_n the_o dun_a cow_n because_o it_o be_v the_o king_n beast_n betoken_v the_o king_n and_o the_o bull_n betoken_v mistress_n anne_n expound_v boulogne_n who_o after_o be_v queen_n her_o father_n give_v the_o black_a bull_n head_n in_o his_o cognizance_n and_o be_v his_o beast_n so_o that_o when_o the_o king_n have_v marry_v queen_n anne_n it_o be_v think_v of_o all_o man_n to_o be_v fulfil_v for_o what_o a_o number_n of_o priest_n religious_a and_o secular_a lose_v their_o head_n for_o offend_v of_o those_o law_n make_v to_o bring_v this_o matter_n to_o pass_v be_v not_o unknown_a to_o all_o the_o world_n therefore_o it_o may_v well_o be_v judge_v that_o this_o prophecy_n be_v fulfil_v fall_n you_o have_v hear_v what_o word_n the_o duke_n of_o norfolk_n speak_v to_o master_n cromwell_n touch_v my_o lord_n go_v into_o the_o north_n then_o say_v my_o lord_n tom_n it_o be_v time_n to_o be_v go_v therefore_o i_o pray_v you_o go_v to_o the_o king_n and_o tell_v he_o i_o will_v go_v to_o my_o benefice_n at_o york_n but_o for_o lack_v of_o money_n desire_v his_o grace_n to_o help_v he_o to_o some_o and_o you_o may_v say_v that_o the_o last_o money_n i_o have_v from_o his_o grace_n be_v too_o little_a to_o pay_v my_o debt_n and_o to_o compel_v i_o to_o pay_v the_o rest_n of_o my_o debt_n be_v too_o much_o extremity_n see_v all_o my_o good_n be_v take_v from_o i_o also_o show_v my_o lord_n of_o norfolk_n and_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o counsel_n that_o i_o will_v depart_v if_o i_o have_v money_n sir_n quoth_v master_n cromwell_n i_o shall_v do_v my_o best_a and_o so_o after_o other_o communication_n depart_v and_o come_v to_o london_n then_o in_o the_o beginning_n of_o lent_n my_o lord_n remove_v his_o lodging_n into_o the_o charterhous_n at_o richmond_n where_o he_o lie_v in_o a_o lodging_n that_o dr._n collet_n make_v for_o himself_o and_o every_o afternoon_n for_o the_o time_n of_o his_o residence_n there_o will_v he_o sit_v in_o contemplation_n with_o some_o one_o of_o the_o most_o ancient_a father_n there_o who_o convert_v he_o to_o dispose_v the_o vain_a glory_n of_o this_o world_n and_o there_o they_o give_v unto_o he_o shirt_n of_o hair_n to_o wear_v next_o his_o body_n which_o he_o be_v divers_a time_n after_o hair_n the_o lord_n assign_v that_o my_o lord_n shall_v have_v 1000_o mark_n pension_n out_o of_o winchester_n for_o his_o go_n down_o cardinal_n into_o the_o north_n which_o when_o the_o king_n hear_v of_o he_o command_v that_o it_o shall_v be_v forthwith_o pay_v unto_o mr._n cromwell_n and_o the_o king_n command_v master_n cromwell_n to_o repair_v to_o he_o again_o when_o he_o have_v receive_v the_o say_a sum_n which_o he_o according_o do_v to_o who_o his_o majesty_n say_v show_v your_o lord_n that_o i_o have_v send_v he_o ten_o p._n thousand_o pound_n of_o my_o benevolence_n and_o tell_v he_o he_o shall_v not_o lack_v bid_v he_o be_v of_o good_a comfort_n master_n cromwell_n on_o my_o lord_n behalf_n thank_v the_o king_n for_o his_o royal_a liberality_n towards_o my_o lord_n and_o with_o that_o depart_v to_o richmond_n to_o who_o he_o deliver_v the_o money_n and_o the_o joyful_a tiding_n wherein_o my_o lord_n do_v not_o a_o little_a rejoice_v forthwith_o there_o be_v a_o preparation_n make_v for_o his_o go_v he_o have_v with_o he_o in_o his_o train_n one_o hundred_o and_o sixty_o person_n have_v york_n with_o he_o twelve_o cartes_n to_o carry_v his_o good_n which_o he_o send_v from_o his_o college_n at_o oxford_n beside_o other_o cartes_n of_o his_o daily_a carriage_n of_o his_o necessary_n for_o his_o building_n he_o keep_v his_o solemn_a feast_n of_o easter_n at_o peterborow_n and_o upon_o palm-sunday_n he_o bear_v his_o palm_n and_o go_v on_o procession_n with_o the_o monk_n and_o upon_o thursday_n he_o make_v his_o mandy_n have_v 59_o poor_a people_n foot_n who_o foot_n he_o wash_v and_o kiss_v and_o after_o he_o have_v dry_v they_o he_o give_v every_o one_o of_o they_o twelve_o penny_n and_o three_o ell_n of_o good_a canvas_n to_o make_v they_o shirt_n and_o each_o of_o they_o a_o pair_n of_o new_a shoe_n and_o a_o cask_n of_o red-herring_n on_o easter-day_n he_o rise_v to_o the_o resurrection_n and_o that_o day_n he_o go_v in_o procession_n in_o his_o cardinal_n vestment_n and_o have_v his_o hat_n on_o his_o head_n and_o sing_v the_o high_a mass_n there_o himself_o solemn_o after_o his_o mass_n he_o give_v his_o benediction_n to_o all_o the_o hearer_n with_o clean_a remission_n from_o peterborow_n he_o take_v his_o journey_n
