especial_o the_o israelites_n be_v rejection_n idolatry_n and_o impenitency_n the_o cause_n of_o the_o people_n rejection_n reject_v be_v first_o their_o gross_a idolatry_n whereby_o they_o have_v forsake_v god_n and_o betake_v themselves_o to_o the_o service_n of_o idol_n and_o second_o their_o obstinacy_n and_o impenitency_n in_o their_o course_n of_o rebellion_n from_o which_o they_o will_v not_o be_v reclaim_v neither_o by_o god_n bountiful_a benefit_n nor_o by_o his_o severe_a threaten_n nor_o yet_o by_o his_o chastisement_n and_o more_o grievous_a punishment_n which_o first_o like_o a_o tender_a father_n and_o after_o like_o a_o just_a judge_n he_o inflict_v on_o they_o but_o rather_o grow_v worse_a and_o worse_o and_o more_o and_o more_o intolerable_a in_o their_o wickedness_n for_o this_o be_v the_o last_o course_n and_o mean_n which_o the_o lord_n use_v for_o the_o conversion_n of_o a_o sinner_n which_o when_o it_o will_v not_o prevail_v he_o give_v they_o over_o as_o be_v past_o all_o help_n see_v they_o be_v pass_v all_o grace_n if_o the_o skilful_a surgeon_n find_v that_o heal_a salve_n be_v not_o fit_a to_o heal_v a_o deep_a fester_a wound_n he_o use_v draw_v corrosive_n and_o the_o lancher_n but_o if_o he_o see_v the_o part_n disease_v notwithstanding_o all_o good_a and_o fit_a mean_n use_v to_o be_v past_a cure_n he_o will_v no_o long_o lose_v his_o labour_n and_o cost_n but_o cut_v it_o off_o the_o gracious_a judge_n when_o he_o have_v for_o the_o offender_n first_o fault_n give_v he_o some_o fatherly_a admonition_n or_o threaten_v some_o severe_a punishment_n if_o he_o offend_v again_o he_o punish_v he_o with_o a_o whip_n or_o with_o a_o burn_a iron_n but_o if_o all_o these_o chastisement_n and_o punishment_n will_v not_o reclaim_v he_o he_o condemn_v he_o to_o exile_n or_o death_n as_o be_v past_a hope_n of_o amendment_n and_o so_o the_o lord_n when_o he_o see_v that_o neither_o the_o heal_a plaster_n of_o his_o gracious_a promise_n nor_o the_o sharp_a corrasive_n of_o his_o threaten_n and_o punishment_n will_v cure_v a_o people_n of_o the_o deep_a fester_a sore_n of_o sin_n when_o he_o see_v that_o neither_o admonition_n nor_o gentle_a chastisement_n nor_o severe_a punishment_n will_v restrain_v the_o sinner_n from_o outrageous_a wickedness_n then_o do_v he_o cut_v and_o cast_v they_o off_o as_o man_n still_o to_o enjoy_v his_o benefit_n for_o he_o have_v not_o as_o yet_o spoil_v and_o strip_v she_o as_o he_o just_o may_v and_o be_v loath_a to_o go_v about_o it_o and_o therefore_o he_o exhort_v she_o to_o turn_v from_o her_o sin_n that_o he_o may_v not_o be_v urge_v to_o do_v it_o in_o his_o just_a displeasure_n three_o he_o labour_v to_o work_v in_o her_o true_a repentance_n by_o forewarn_v bestow_v on_o she_o four_o because_o pride_n and_o true_a repentance_n will_v not_o stand_v together_o therefore_o he_o seek_v to_o humble_v she_o both_o by_o put_v she_o in_o mind_n of_o her_o miserable_a and_o base_a estate_n wherein_o she_o be_v before_o he_o advance_v she_o and_o by_o assure_v she_o that_o if_o she_o do_v not_o humble_v herself_o forsake_v her_o sin_n and_o turn_v unto_o first_o we_o may_v observe_v what_o be_v the_o repent_v god_n denounce_v his_o judgment_n that_o we_o may_v repent_v cause_n why_o the_o lord_n denounce_v his_o judgement_n against_o his_o people_n to_o wit_n that_o they_o may_v repent_v of_o their_o sin_n and_o that_o repent_v they_o may_v escape_v punishment_n which_o his_o justice_n urge_v he_o to_o inflict_v upon_o they_o continue_v in_o their_o sin_n so_o he_o cause_v the_o divorce_n to_o be_v proclaim_v that_o they_o may_v take_v away_o their_o adultery_n and_o that_o repent_v of_o they_o they_o may_v not_o be_v strip_v of_o all_o the_o gift_n and_o benefit_n which_o as_o yet_o they_o enjoy_v so_o that_o the_o end_n of_o god_n threaten_n be_v that_o we_o may_v repent_v and_o of_o our_o repentance_n that_o we_o may_v escape_v punishment_n and_o the_o end_n of_o one_o punishment_n be_v that_o make_v good_a use_n of_o it_o we_o may_v escape_v a_o other_o whence_o we_o may_v observe_v that_o god_n even_o in_o wrath_n remember_v mercy_n for_o he_o threaten_v that_o he_o may_v not_o punish_v and_o punish_v that_o he_o may_v not_o destroy_v he_o punish_v unwilling_o after_o a_o sort_n and_o therefore_o before_o hand_n he_o give_v warning_n that_o we_o may_v escape_v it_o and_o have_v inflict_v it_o he_o labour_v to_o apply_v it_o to_o our_o senseless_a heart_n that_o by_o our_o obstinacy_n we_o do_v not_o government_n or_o any_o form_n of_o a_o common_a wealth_n while_o they_o have_v any_o show_n of_o religion_n or_o any_o outward_a mean_n of_o worship_v god_n though_o they_o be_v never_o so_o much_o deprave_a and_o corrupt_a they_o rest_v nay_o they_o boast_v in_o it_o as_o though_o they_o be_v in_o good_a estate_n and_o therefore_o to_o beat_v they_o from_o this_o vain_a conceit_n the_o lord_n
