the_o lord_n deal_v with_o his_o people_n in_o this_o kind_n as_o he_o deal_v with_o his_o people_n in_o deliver_v they_o out_o of_o babylon_n zech._n 9.12_o they_o be_v prisoner_n in_o babylon_n faith_n but_o have_v only_o this_o branch_n of_o effectual_a calling_n begin_v in_o he_o he_o that_o have_v this_o hope_n i_o now_o speak_v of_o it_o set_v he_o a_o work_n to_o seek_v after_o christ_n and_o to_o labour_v hard_o for_o the_o enjoy_n of_o he_o and_o to_o seek_v he_o in_o all_o his_o ordinance_n in_o his_o manner_n though_o he_o can_v pray_v and_o perform_v duty_n as_o other_o do_v which_o be_v as_o a_o anchor_n to_o the_o soul_n 6.19_o so_o it_o be_v with_o a_o man_n that_o be_v not_o come_v thus_o far_o but_o be_v only_o under_o the_o same_o first_o branch_n though_o his_o toss_n be_v fierce_a and_o his_o temptation_n be_v violent_a and_o his_o case_n be_v doubtful_a and_o full_a of_o hazard_n yet_o notwithhand_v when_o this_o hope_n come_v into_o the_o soul_n it_o do_v have_v say_v so_o i_o be_v of_o the_o mind_n once_o to_o be_v precise_a but_o the_o further_o i_o pry_v into_o it_o the_o worse_o i_o be_v and_o these_o preacher_n will_v make_v a_o man_n mad_a when_o people_n find_v humiliation_n so_o hard_a a_o thing_n they_o think_v they_o be_v not_o able_a to_o wade_v through_o and_o so_o leave_v it_o when_o they_o have_v no_o hope_n to_o go_v on_o they_o grow_v remiss_a and_o loose_a and_o careless_a in_o this_o kind_n it_o make_v a_o man_n desperate_a when_o this_o hope_n be_v go_v therefore_o when_o the_o lord_n have_v a_o mind_n to_o do_v good_a to_o a_o man_n and_o encourage_v he_o to_o go_v on_o in_o the_o way_n of_o holiness_n he_o put_v some_o hope_n into_o the_o soul_n and_o when_o a_o man_n see_v some_o hope_n than_o he_o will_v pray_v and_o fast_o and_o humble_v himself_o the_o lord_n let_v in_o this_o hope_n and_o so_o prepare_v a_o man_n for_o himself_o three_o because_o he_o will_v not_o do_v all_o at_o once_o once_o but_o work_n upon_o a_o man_n by_o degree_n the_o lord_n can_v put_v faith_n into_o the_o soul_n at_o first_o but_o the_o lord_n will_v first_o make_v a_o man_n a_o probationer_n of_o faith_n the_o lord_n will_v first_o have_v the_o seed_n sow_v and_o then_o quicken_v in_o the_o ground_n and_o then_o have_v a_o blade_n and_o then_o a_o ear_n and_o then_o harvest_n again_o mercy_n the_o lord_n will_v act_v 3.4_o 5._o so_o the_o lord_n make_v a_o man_n look_v upon_o the_o gospel_n to_o mind_v the_o gospel_n and_o regard_n and_o take_v notice_n of_o it_o what_o it_o say_v for_o people_n let_v these_o thing_n slip_v but_o when_o god_n work_v this_o hope_n in_o the_o soul_n he_o make_v a_o man_n to_o mind_v the_o gospel_n and_o make_v as_o if_o it_o look_v at_o he_o and_o so_o he_o come_v to_o have_v sound_a hope_n in_o the_o gospel_n as_o a_o beggar_n when_o a_o gentleman_n put_v his_o hand_n into_o his_o purse_n though_o he_o see_v nothing_o yet_o he_o think_v he_o will_v give_v he_o something_o so_o the_o lord_n put_v his_o hand_n into_o his_o purse_n as_o it_o be_v he_o lay_v his_o hand_n upon_o mercy_n and_o let_v the_o soul_n see_v he_o tender_v of_o mercy_n and_o this_o make_v he_o hope_v he_o shall_v have_v mercy_n he_o cast_v a_o look_n upon_o he_o and_o so_o affect_v and_o draw_v the_o soul_n and_o he_o find_v the_o lord_n move_v the_o soul_n and_o incline_v the_o heart_n and_o wean_a the_o soul_n from_o the_o world_n and_o quicken_a he_o to_o seek_v after_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v above_o by_o remove_v of_o all_o impossibility_n that_o lie_v upon_o the_o soul_n impossibility_n you_o know_v there_o be_v abundance_n of_o impossibility_n that_o appear_v as_o for_o a_o man_n to_o live_v in_o his_o sin_n a_o man_n then_o have_v no_o heart_n to_o christ_n no_o heart_n to_o heavenly_a thing_n no_o mind_n to_o pray_v and_o to_o strict_a course_n it_o be_v impossible_a for_o a_o man_n in_o this_o case_n ever_o to_o attain_v these_o thing_n when_o he_o have_v no_o heart_n to_o they_o now_o the_o lord_n take_v away_o that_o impossibility_n and_o make_v the_o soul_n see_v it_o be_v possible_a to_o attain_v these_o thing_n therefore_o there_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o seed_n of_o regeneration_n go_v along_o with_o this_o 1_o pet._n 1.3_o as_o there_o be_v a_o seed_n before_o regeneration_n itself_o before_o that_o hope_n that_o proceed_v from_o justify_v faith_n so_o these_o seed_n of_o regeneration_n be_v before_o this_o hope_n i_o now_o speak_v of_o the_o soul_n have_v something_o whereby_o it_o see_v a_o possibility_n and_o the_o lord_n show_v he_o a_o way_n of_o recovery_n and_o set_v up_o a_o standard_n to_o guide_v he_o in_o the_o way_n and_o take_v away_o all_o impediment_n that_o hinder_v he_o in_o the_o way_n and_o now_o the_o soul_n see_v it_o be_v possible_a to_o attain_v unto_o these_o thing_n hope_n if_o we_o have_v any_o such_o hope_n as_o this_o let_v we_o not_o labour_v to_o diminish_v it_o but_o let_v it_o grow_v and_o bid_v he_o rely_v upon_o he_o and_o though_o sense_n and_o feeling_n be_v against_o he_o though_o all_o fear_n and_o objection_n be_v against_o he_o he_o bid_v he_o believe_v and_o be_v of_o and_o bless_a he_o mark_v it_o the_o lord_n take_v he_o alone_o and_o speak_v to_o his_o heart_n between_o he_o and_o himself_o so_o when_o the_o lord_n speak_v to_o a_o soul_n and_o call_v he_o by_o his_o grace_n he_o call_v he_o alone_o and_o take_v he_o alone_o though_o all_o the_o congregation_n hear_v the_o same_o sermon_n yet_o he_o take_v he_o alone_o and_o speak_v to_o his_o heart_n and_o all_o thing_n that_o may_v hinder_v we_o and_o be_v fit_v with_o all_o thing_n that_o may_v help_v forward_o the_o duty_n that_o time_n place_n and_o all_o advantage_n may_v meet_v together_o for_o the_o better_a do_v of_o it_o then_o second_o we_o must_v watch_v in_o the_o duty_n as_o well_o as_o before_o the_o duty_n duty_n as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v concern_v prayer_n so_o i_o may_v say_v concern_v all_o other_o duty_n continue_v in_o prayer_n and_o watch_v therein_o with_o thanksgiving_n col._n 4.2_o as_o we_o be_v to_o watch_v before_o that_o we_o may_v have_v preparation_n so_o we_o must_v watch_v in_o the_o duty_n that_o we_o may_v right_o discharge_v it_o for_o though_o a_o man_n have_v be_v watchful_a before_o the_o duty_n and_o have_v be_v prepare_v in_o some_o measure_n enlarged_o yet_o when_o he_o have_v do_v all_o he_o may_v lose_v the_o comfort_n and_o reward_n of_o the_o duty_n therefore_o when_o we_o hear_v the_o word_n we_o shall_v watch_v over_o our_o heart_n that_o the_o foul_n of_o the_o air_n may_v not_o pluck_v it_o out_o again_o that_o if_o we_o have_v any_o quicken_a we_o may_v not_o lose_v it_o again_o if_o we_o have_v hear_v any_o thing_n that_o have_v help_v we_o forward_o in_o grace_n we_o shall_v take_v heed_n that_o we_o lose_v not_o the_o ground_n again_o as_o the_o publican_n as_o soon_o as_o he_o have_v pray_v to_o god_n and_o perform_v a_o ordinance_n aright_o how_o careful_a be_v he_o not_o to_o lose_v the_o benefit_n thereof_o he_o go_v to_o the_o temple_n to_o pray_v and_o he_o be_v watchful_a before_o the_o duty_n think_v i_o be_o now_o go_v to_o pray_v and_o power_n out_o my_o soul_n before_o god_n he_o be_v watchful_a in_o the_o duty_n for_o you_o may_v see_v how_o humble_o and_o feel_o and_o penitent_o he_o lord_n be_v merciful_a to_o i_o a_o sinner_n and_o when_o he_o have_v do_v this_o he_o be_v careful_a afterward_o for_o the_o text_n say_v luk._n 18.14_o as_o he_o have_v pray_v for_o mercy_n so_o he_o be_v careful_a to_o carry_v it_o along_o with_o he_o he_o pray_v that_o he_o may_v be_v justify_v and_o as_o he_o pray_v for_o it_o so_o he_o be_v careful_a to_o carry_v home_o justification_n in_o his_o bosom_n so_o when_o we_o be_v at_o a_o sermon_n we_o shall_v watch_v that_o we_o may_v go_v home_o quicken_v and_o better_v and_o when_o we_o be_v at_o conference_n we_o shall_v watch_v that_o we_o may_v return_v home_o with_o the_o fruit_n and_o benefit_n of_o the_o duty_n so_o for_o all_o other_o ordinance_n we_o shall_v be_v careful_a and_o watchful_a that_o we_o may_v not_o lose_v the_o reward_n for_o the_o devil_n be_v crafty_a and_o our_o own_o heart_n be_v ready_a to_o betray_v we_o therefore_o we_o have_v need_n be_v watchful_a and_o that_o be_v the_o second_o thing_n we_o shall_v watch_v the_o duty_n of_o religion_n time_n three_o we_o shall_v watch_v time_n and_o season_n god_n know_v what_o miserable_a thing_n be_v a_o come_n therefore_o what_o time_n the_o lord_n allot_v we_o we_o have_v need_n improve_v it_o to_o the_o best_a advantage_n that_o we_o may_v redeem_v the_o time_n how_o many_o hour_n do_v run_v from_o we_o before_o we_o be_v aware_a how_o many_o day_n and_o month_n and_o year_n have_v we_o let_v slip_v away_o and_o we_o be_v little_a the_o better_a our_o time_n be_v a_o special_a thing_n and_o therefore_o we_o have_v need_v to_o have_v no_o evidence_n of_o comfort_n to_o his_o soul_n he_o know_v not_o how_o to_o meet_v god_n in_o the_o field_n but_o when_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n break_v out_o in_o any_o kind_n upon_o his_o good_n or_o wife_n or_o child_n or_o body_n or_o friend_n or_o any_o thing_n he_o be_v at_o a_o loss_n and_o know_v not_o what_o to_o do_v he_o be_v fain_o to_o sink_v under_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n and_o have_v no_o refuge_n to_o fly_v unto_o therefore_o we_o shall_v watch_v against_o the_o day_n of_o god_n anger_n three_o grace_n we_o shall_v watch_v over_o the_o time_n of_o grace_n for_o there_o be_v gracious_a and_o acceptable_a time_n as_o the_o apostle_n call_v they_o 2_o cor._n 6.21_o many_o time_n good_a motion_n come_v in_o now_o if_o we_o do_v not_o watch_v to_o keep_v they_o will_v but_o have_v take_v hold_v of_o the_o mercy_n he_o may_v have_v have_v it_o but_o afterward_o he_o may_v go_v mourning_n and_o thirst_v and_o longing_n and_o never_o have_v the_o mercy_n and_o watchfulness_n and_o painstaking_a in_o the_o way_n of_o god_n there_o be_v a_o woeful_a deal_n of_o unsettle_v and_o want_v of_o groundedness_n in_o a_o good_a estate_n people_n be_v very_o much_o off_o and_o all_o to_o piece_n and_o that_o you_o may_v see_v what_o a_o woeful_a thing_n this_o be_v do_v but_o consider_v these_o particular_n first_o accuse_v your_o conscience_n can_v but_o accuse_v you_o you_o can_v say_v christ_n bear_v your_o sin_n you_o know_v not_o whether_o you_o be_v in_o he_o or_o no_o you_o know_v christ_n bear_v the_o sin_n of_o his_o people_n but_o whether_o that_o though_o they_o be_v in_o the_o captivity_n of_o sin_n and_o satan_n yet_o they_o be_v prisoner_n of_o hope_n and_o the_o lord_n give_v some_o hope_n that_o the_o prison_n door_n shall_v be_v open_v and_o this_o we_o have_v here_o in_o the_o text_n for_o though_o the_o apostle_n mean_v here_o by_o hope_n the_o thing_n hope_v for_o yet_o we_o call_v it_o hope_v because_o as_o soon_o as_o thing_n i_o will_v show_v unto_o you_o first_o what_o this_o hope_n be_v second_o how_o it_o agree_v with_o that_o hope_n that_o follow_v justify_v faith_n three_o how_o it_o disagree_v with_o it_o four_o the_o reason_n of_o the_o point_n and_o five_o the_o use_v hope_n for_o the_o first_o what_o this_o hope_n be_v and_o it_o be_v a_o hope_n that_o arise_v out_o of_o the_o faith_n of_o possibility_n when_o the_o lord_n let_v in_o a_o possibility_n of_o faith_n and_o make_v the_o soul_n believe_v that_o his_o sin_n may_v be_v forgive_v and_o he_o may_v attain_v everlasting_a life_n and_o he_o may_v come_v to_o be_v a_o saint_n and_o one_o of_o god_n dear_a and_o faithful_a child_n he_o let_v in_o such_o a_o possibility_n into_o the_o heart_n and_o this_o hope_n flow_v out_o of_o this_o faith_n of_o possibility_n and_o this_o faith_n of_o possibility_n be_v another-gesse_a thing_n than_o people_n take_v it_o for_o every_o drunkard_n will_v say_v he_o believe_v that_o it_o be_v possible_a to_o be_v save_v and_o to_o find_v mercy_n with_o god_n but_o you_o will_v find_v it_o be_v a_o great_a matter_n than_o so_o it_o be_v speak_v as_o a_o great_a commendation_n of_o abraham_n that_o he_o do_v believe_v that_o god_n be_v able_a to_o raise_v up_o his_o son_n isaac_n heb._n 11.19_o so_o our_o saviour_n christ_n speak_v to_o the_o blind_a man_n ask_v he_o this_o question_n do_v you_o believe_v that_o i_o be_o able_a to_o do_v this_o for_o you_o mat._n 9.23_o it_o be_v a_o great_a matter_n for_o he_o to_o believe_v that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o do_v this_o for_o he_o faith_n of_o presumption_n but_o if_o a_o man_n eye_n be_v open_v and_o his_o conscience_n awaken_v and_o he_o come_v to_o have_v a_o sight_n of_o his_o sin_n now_o cain_n will_v say_v his_o sin_n be_v great_a than_o can_v be_v forgive_v and_o judas_n be_v not_o able_a to_o fly_v unto_o christ_n to_o believe_v a_o possibility_n of_o pardon_n but_o go_v and_o hang_v himself_o and_o despair_n total_o of_o the_o business_n this_o faith_n of_o possibility_n it_o come_v within_o the_o compass_n of_o a_o definition_n of_o faith_n it_o be_v the_o evidence_n of_o thing_n not_o see_v it_o be_v at_o god_n hand_n let_v a_o man_n have_v his_o understanding_n enlighten_v to_o see_v what_o a_o wretch_n he_o be_v and_o how_o fearful_o he_o have_v provoke_v god_n wrath_n against_o he_o and_o it_o be_v not_o in_o his_o power_n to_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v a_o possibility_n for_o he_o to_o find_v mercy_n or_o any_o hope_n of_o pardon_n it_o can_v be_v attain_v to_o without_o the_o work_n of_o god_n a_o weak_a shelf_n be_v able_a to_o hold_v when_o a_o man_n lay_v but_o a_o book_n upon_o it_o but_o if_o a_o man_n lay_v a_o great_a weight_n upon_o a_o weak_a shelf_n it_o will_v break_v under_o it_o so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o faith_n of_o man_n when_o there_o be_v no_o weight_n lay_v upon_o it_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v not_o lay_v upon_o they_o then_o they_o may_v think_v it_o be_v a_o easy_a matter_n to_o have_v salvation_n and_o their_o sin_n pardon_v but_o if_o this_o weight_n shall_v be_v lay_v upon_o they_o their_o faith_n will_v burst_v unless_o the_o lord_n shall_v be_v please_v to_o put_v in_o a_o better_a faith_n than_o this_o it_o be_v not_o in_o a_o man_n power_n to_o look_v beyond_o the_o power_n of_o justice_n for_o a_o man_n to_o believe_v that_o there_o be_v mercy_n in_o god_n contrary_a to_o the_o sentence_n of_o his_o own_o law_n and_o contrary_a to_o the_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o a_o man_n own_o soul_n and_o therefore_o when_o the_o lord_n be_v please_v effectual_o to_o call_v a_o man_n though_o he_o lie_v a_o bleed_a bleed_a before_o in_o the_o sight_n and_o sense_n of_o his_o misery_n he_o open_v a_o door_n of_o hope_n hope_n in_o himself_o yet_o when_o he_o look_v into_o the_o scripture_n and_o see_v what_o a_o gracious_a tender_a of_o mercy_n there_o be_v to_o any_o man_n that_o will_v have_v mercy_n it_o be_v not_o the_o wretchedness_n of_o a_o man_n heart_n that_o cast_v he_o off_o but_o the_o not_o come_v to_o christ_n and_o receive_v of_o he_o that_o damn_v he_o for_o the_o fountain_n of_o mercy_n be_v
hardness_n of_o heart_n again_o so_o that_o such_o a_o man_n be_v not_o the_o formal_a object_n of_o mercy_n 2._o again_o we_o see_v many_o though_o they_o be_v wrought_v upon_o thus_o by_o the_o again_o and_o they_o will_v fain_o get_v up_o and_o they_o lie_v at_o catch_n at_o every_o sermon_n and_o at_o every_o chapter_n and_o at_o every_o word_n which_o a_o good_a man_n speak_v and_o if_o they_o can_v get_v any_o hold_n they_o catch_v at_o it_o and_o so_o get_v up_o again_o and_o go_v on_o and_o when_o they_o have_v get_v a_o little_a comfort_n and_o think_v they_o shall_v do_v well_o they_o be_v as_o careless_a and_o as_o stubborn_a and_o as_o secure_a as_o ever_o they_o be_v they_o may_v go_v on_o in_o the_o profession_n of_o religion_n but_o yet_o their_o latter_a end_n be_v worse_a than_o their_o beginning_n the_o unclean_a devil_n may_v be_v cast_v out_o but_o the_o devil_n transform_v himself_o into_o a_o angel_n of_o light_n and_o enter_v into_o they_o and_o they_o go_v on_o in_o do_v good_a duty_n but_o they_o never_o have_v the_o power_n of_o religion_n again_o three_o many_o that_o be_v humble_v by_o the_o law_n they_o run_v away_o and_o never_o come_v to_o
