jesus_n christ_n the_o son_n of_o god_n who_o be_v truth_n itself_o have_v promise_v with_o his_o own_o mouth_n let_v we_o therefore_o fly_v unto_o the_o throne_n of_o his_o clemency_n and_o let_v we_o there_o continual_o pray_v for_o the_o grace_n of_o good_a life_n and_o perseverance_n in_o good_a work_n nothing_o doubt_v but_o he_o will_v more_o willing_o and_o liberal_o grant_v our_o pray_v it_o can_v be_v doubtful_a to_o any_o but_o that_o above_o all_o thing_n it_o be_v daily_o and_o hover_o to_o be_v practiss_v and_o especial_o of_o we_o christian_n who_o wander_v in_o the_o misery_n of_o this_o world_n exile_v from_o the_o face_n of_o our_o heavenly_a father_n it_o be_v so_o necessary_a for_o we_o to_o obey_v this_o wholesome_a council_n of_o christ_n that_o if_o any_o one_o shall_v determinate_o resolve_v with_o himself_o not_o to_o pray_v he_o sin_v mortal_o and_o which_o be_v more_o whosoever_o shall_v malicious_o neglect_v to_o pray_v have_v time_n and_o opportunity_n and_o chief_o when_o he_o see_v himself_o in_o danger_n to_o fall_v into_o sin_n such_o negligence_n may_v like_v wise_a be_v mortal_a although_o the_o negligence_n of_o its_o own_o obtain_v of_o the_o same_o and_o because_o this_o salvation_n of_o we_o be_v in_o continual_a danger_n and_o that_o every_o one_o be_v bind_v to_o procure_v it_o with_o all_o the_o care_n and_o diligence_n he_o can_v hence_o be_v it_o that_o every_o moment_n we_o be_v bind_v to_o pray_v to_o god_n for_o it_o alwaise_v to_o lift_v up_o our_o eye_n to_o heaven_n alwayse_v to_o lift_v up_o our_o heart_n to_o god_n see_v it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v obtain_v by_o any_o other_o mean_v then_o from_o he_o and_o by_o he_o neither_o must_v we_o only_o pray_v for_o our_o own_o salvation_n but_o also_o for_o the_o salvation_n of_o our_o neighbour_n for_o as_o every_o one_o be_v bind_v to_o succour_n and_o relieve_v he_o when_o he_o see_v he_o in_o corporal_a and_o temporal_a necessity_n so_o be_v he_o much_o more_o bind_v when_o hesee_v he_o in_o any_o spiritual_a danger_n of_o his_o soul_n to_o relieve_v he_o and_o at_o this_o present_a time_n we_o have_v most_o need_n to_o pray_v see_v the_o time_n be_v such_o and_o so_o dangerous_a as_o they_o now_o be_v sinner_n be_v so_o multiply_v upon_o the_o earth_n and_o sin_n itself_o so_o daily_o increase_v as_o we_o see_v it_o be_v now_o adays_o sin_n be_v applaud_v and_o commend_v as_o justice_n and_o good_a work_n repute_v sin_n now_o to_o sim_fw-la be_v to_o do_v welle_v and_o contrary_a wise_a to_o do_v well_o to_o sin_n woe_n sorry_a for_o our_o sin_n we_o shall_v by_o prayer_n lie_v continual_o knock_v at_o the_o gate_n of_o god_n mercy_n and_o clemency_n not_o only_o for_o our_o own_o safety_n but_o also_o for_o the_o recovery_n of_o our_o neighbour_n who_o we_o see_v in_o so_o miserable_a and_o extreme_a danger_n of_o their_o soul_n from_o whence_o they_o can_v arise_v but_o by_o continual_a prayer_n and_o implore_v of_o god_n divine_a assistance_n the_o four_o and_o last_o reason_n why_o god_n ought_v to_o be_v pray_v unto_o chap._n v._n the_o four_o and_o last_o reason_n may_v be_v gather_v after_o this_o manner_n there_o be_v no_o man_n clothe_v with_o this_o mortal_a flesh_n who_o have_v not_o sometime_o finned_a and_o high_o offend_v the_o majesty_n of_o god_n nor_o that_o have_v any_o warrant_n or_o security_n hereafter_o not_o to_o sin_n and_o in_o this_o respect_n it_o be_v most_o necessary_a for_o we_o by_o daily_a prayer_n not_o only_o to_o seek_v that_o he_o will_v gracious_o pardon_v and_o forgive_v our_o former_a sin_n but_o also_o that_o he_o will_v be_v please_v to_o prevent_v we_o with_o his_o grace_n lest_o we_o fall_v again_o into_o other_o sin_n through_o which_o we_o may_v incur_v eternal_a punishment_n and_o first_o there_o be_v no_o man_n who_o soul_n have_v once_o be_v infect_v with_o sin_n that_o certain_o know_v whether_o he_o be_v in_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n or_o no_o unless_o it_o be_v reveal_v unto_o he_o wherefore_o solomon_n say_v in_o his_o book_n of_o ecclesiastes_n there_o be_v just_a and_o wise_a man_n and_o their_o work_n be_v in_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o man_n know_v not_o whether_o he_o be_v worthy_a of_o love_n or_o hatred_n but_o all_o thing_n be_v keep_v uncertain_a unto_o the_o last_o that_o be_v all_o thing_n be_v leave_v to_o the_o last_o examine_v where_o nothing_o shall_v be_v hide_v not_o the_o least_o thought_n that_o have_v enter_v into_o man_n herat_o shall_v be_v conceal_v from_o the_o most_o strict_a judge_n but_o although_o no_o man_n in_o this_o estate_n of_o life_n know_v certainty_n whether_o he_o be_v in_o state_n of_o grace_n or_o no_o yet_o by_o certain_a conjecture_n he_o may_v undoubted_o believe_v it_o and_o especial_o when_o he_o know_v not_o that_o his_o conscience_n be_v charge_v with_o any_o mortal_a sin_n of_o which_o he_o have_v not_o here_o to_o fore_n repent_v or_o which_o he_o have_v not_o discover_v to_o his_o ghostly_a father_n or_o do_v intend_v to_o discover_v at_o his_o first_o opportunity_n and_o if_o moreover_o he_o find_v himself_o incline_v to_o do_v and_o put_v in_o execution_n those_o thing_n which_o belong_v to_o the_o honour_n of_o god_n if_o he_o be_v delight_v to_o hear_v holy_a scripture_n to_o be_v often_o present_a at_o divine_a service_n and_o be_v resolute_a by_o god_n grace_n so_o much_o

as_o be_v in_o his_o power_n to_o abstain_v from_o all_o contagion_n of_o sin_n this_o man_n doubtless_o may_v belecue_v that_o he_o be_v in_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n but_o as_o i_o say_v before_o no_o man_n can_v certain_o know_v this_o unless_o he_o be_v special_o illuminate_v from_o above_o and_o for_o this_o cause_n it_o be_v necessary_a for_o all_o man_n to_o contain_v themselves_o within_o the_o limit_n and_o bound_n of_o fear_n and_o to_o be_v perseverant_o knock_v at_o the_o gate_n of_o god_n mercy_n to_o this_o fear_n do_v the_o holy_a scripture_n persuade_v we_o say_v be_v not_o without_o fear_n of_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o thy_o sin_n and_o true_o this_o fear_n will_v so_o much_o help_v and_o avayle_n we_o that_o if_o the_o grief_n before_o take_v for_o our_o sin_n be_v not_o sufficient_a almighty_a god_n now_o approve_v of_o this_o fear_n and_o withal_o accept_v of_o the_o prayer_n which_o this_o fear_n beget_v it_o will_v satisfy_v god_n wroth_a and_o obtain_v mercy_n and_o pardon_n of_o all_o his_o sin_n before_o commit_v moreover_o if_o we_o grant_v there_o be_v any_o man_n that_o know_v he_o have_v full_a remission_n of_o all_o his_o sin_n and_o that_o he_o be_v whole_o reconcile_v to_o god_n and_o certain_o in_o his_o grace_n yet_o may_v such_o a_o one_o very_o well_o doubt_v whether_o he_o may_v not_o fall_v from_o this_o so_o happy_a a_o estate_n see_v that_o there_o be_v no_o man_n so_o confirm_v in_o grace_n but_o that_o he_o may_v fall_v from_o it_o wherefore_o s._n paul_n give_v this_o council_n to_o the_o roman_n thoustande_v by_o faith_n in_o by_o his_o grace_n for_o we_o read_v of_o many_o who_o have_v stand_v up_o like_o pillar_n a_o long_a time_n in_o the_o church_n of_o christ_n and_o have_v shine_v like_a as_o burn_a lamp_n of_o sanctity_n yet_o because_o they_o have_v not_o contain_v themselves_o within_o the_o limit_n of_o this_o humble_a fear_n they_o have_v fall_v headlong_o into_o the_o bottomless_a pit_n of_o hell_n not_o only_o to_o their_o own_o ruin_n and_o infamy_n but_o the_o ruin_n of_o many_o other_o which_o here_o but_o that_o i_o fear_v to_o be_v tedious_a i_o can_v confirm_v by_o the_o authority_n of_o holy_a doctor_n and_o indubitable_a history_n of_o the_o church_n now_o out_o of_o this_o we_o have_v here_o say_v it_o appear_v to_o every_o man_n that_o we_o ought_v alwayse_v to_o pray_v as_o well_o for_o the_o obtain_n pardon_n of_o our_o sin_n as_o also_o to_o avoid_v the_o imminent_a danger_n we_o may_v so_o easy_o fall_v into_o and_o thus_o have_v treat_v of_o these_o four_o reason_n so_o much_o i_o hope_v as_o be_v sufficient_a i_o will_v now_o speak_v something_o of_o the_o fruit_n of_o prayer_n which_o i_o promise_v to_o do_v in_o this_o second_o part_n the_o second_o part_n of_o the_o three_o chief_a frvit_n of_o prayer_n chap_a i._o although_o the_o a_o foresay_a reason_n may_v seem_v more_o than_o sufficient_a to_o stir_v up_o man_n mind_n unto_o prayer_n yet_o not_o with_o stand_v there_o be_v many_o very_a slow_a and_o dull_a to_o this_o exercise_n because_o forsooth_o they_o do_v not_o taste_v that_o inward_a sweetness_n which_o many_o devout_a soul_n do_v oftentimes_o find_v in_o themselves_o they_o will_v willing_o they_o say_v pray_v if_o they_o can_v in_o joy_n that_o such_o inward_a comfort_n and_o content_n which_o other_o do_v but_o withal_o they_o then_o do_v not_o consider_v that_o prayer_n must_v go_v before_o and_o sweetness_n and_o delight_n will_v come_v after_o for_o as_o in_o the_o body_n by_o long_a motion_n and_o agitation_n of_o it_o heat_n come_v and_o increase_v even_o so_o by_o long_a use_n and_o perseverance_n in_o prayer_n begin_v and_o increass_v that_o sweetness_n and_o comfort_n in_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v most_o pleasant_a and_o above_o all_o mesaure_n comfortable_a and_o although_o every_o one_o taste_v not_o this_o sweetness_n in_o prayer_n yet_o there_o be_v other_o fruit_n which_o we_o reap_v by_o pray_v which_o be_v of_o three_o sort_n the_o first_o be_v the_o merit_n itself_o which_o god_n have_v propose_v to_o give_v unto_o we_o for_o pray_v the_o second_o be_v the_o obtain_n of_o the_o thing_n we_o pray_v for_o the_o three_o be_v the_o taste_n of_o that_o wonderful_a sweetness_n which_o we_o find_v in_o ourselves_o in_o the_o time_n of_o prayer_n which_o three_o kind_n of_o fruit_n be_v so_o different_a in_o themselves_o that_o one_o may_v attain_v unto_o the_o first_o without_o the_o other_o two_o for_o one_o may_v by_o prayer_n meritt_v yet_o not_o obtain_v that_o which_o he_o pray_v for_o as_o saint_n paul_n do_v who_o say_v that_o 12._o 2._o cor._n 12._o he_o pray_v to_o god_n three_o time_n that_o the_o sting_n of_o the_o flesh_n with_o which_o he_o be_v very_o much_o trouble_v may_v be_v take_v from_o he_o yet_o he_o do_v not_o obtain_v what_o he_o pray_v for_o but_o for_o all_o this_o it_o be_v most_o certain_a he_o do_v not_o loose_v the_o merit_n of_o his_o prayer_n and_o the_o two_o first_o may_v be_v obtain_v without_o the_o three_o which_o questionless_a daily_o happen_v unto_o many_o who_o beg_v pardon_n of_o their_o sin_n do_v obtain_v it_o and_o beside_o this_o they_o be_v not_o frustrate_v of_o the_o merit_n of_o prayer_n yet_o theyare_n not_o refresh_v with_o that_o inward_a joy_n and_o spiritual_a sweetness_n for_o the_o publican_n which_o christ_n speak_v of_o in_o the_o gospel_n when_o he_o beg_v pardon_n of_o his_o sin_n say_v god_n have_v mercy_n on_o i_o a_o sinner_n 18._o mart._n 18._o obtain_v both_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o prayer_n and_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o his_o sin_n for_o it_o follow_v in_o the_o gospel_n ibid._n ibid._n he_o go_v away_o justify_v into_o his_o own_o bowse_v but_o we_o do_v not_o read_v that_o prayer_n of_o the_o first_o fruit_n of_o prayer_n that_o be_v of_o the_o merit_n chap._n ii_o we_o have_v before_o say_v that_o merit_n be_v the_o first_o fruit_n of_o prayer_n which_o we_o will_v not_o have_v understand_v of_o any_o merit_n but_o of_o that_o only_a to_o which_o a_o reward_n in_o heaven_n do_v correspond_v and_o be_v due_a which_o divine_v call_v essential_a for_o it_o be_v certain_a prayer_n wicked_a man_n have_v some_o merit_n of_o their_o prayer_n that_o there_o be_v no_o man_n with_o how_o great_a sin_n socuer_v he_o be_v charge_v that_o shall_v be_v deprive_v of_o all_o merit_n of_o his_o prayer_n for_o he_o shall_v either_o be_v reward_v in_o this_o world_n with_o some_o temporal_a reward_n or_o at_o best_o his_o pain_n shall_v be_v somewhat_o mitigate_v in_o the_o next_o but_o in_o respect_n of_o such_o prayer_n he_o shall_v never_o obtain_v any_o the_o jest_n portion_n of_o heavenly_a glory_n for_o that_o be_v not_o obtain_v by_o any_o but_o those_o who_o prayer_n spring_v from_o the_o root_n of_o charity_n that_o be_v who_o be_v in_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n when_o they_o pray_v whosoever_o therefore_o desire_v not_o to_o be_v deprive_v of_o this_o merit_n must_v first_o endeavour_v to_o have_v charity_n deep_o plant_v and_o root_v in_o his_o heart_n and_o so_o not_o only_o his_o prayer_n but_o all_o his_o work_n shall_v be_v meritorious_a and_o the_o great_a that_o the_o charity_n be_v the_o more_o meritorius_fw-la will_n the_o work_n be_v whence_o i_o gather_v that_o they_o meritt_v most_o meritorious_a 〈◊〉_d prayer_n
