so_o our_o eye_n wait_v upon_o the_o lord_n our_o god_n until_o he_o have_v mercy_n upon_o us._n here_o the_o prophet_n set_v forth_o by_o similitude_n the_o nature_n of_o true_a piety_n as_o if_o the_o manner_n of_o their_o deliverance_n so_o that_o they_o seem_v to_o hang_v as_o it_o be_v in_o the_o mid_n between_o heaven_n and_o earth_n these_o thing_n be_v grevous_a and_o exceed_o increase_v the_o tentation_n therefore_o we_o must_v lay_v sure_a hold_n on_o this_o consolation_n which_o the_o prophet_n here_o set_v forth_o that_o our_o tentation_n shall_v have_v a_o end_n but_o not_o as_o we_o will_v lest_o we_o seem_v to_o appoint_v the_o time_n and_o manner_n of_o our_o deliverance_n which_o the_o lord_n reserve_v to_o himself_o alone_o and_o here_o be_v a_o example_n turn_v our_o eye_n from_o the_o lord_n but_o constant_o to_o persevere_v in_o sure_a hope_n &_o expectation_n of_o his_o gracious_a deliverance_n and_o of_o his_o help_a hand_n to_o be_v present_a with_o we_o in_o our_o necessity_n whereof_o our_o saviour_n christ_n also_o warn_v we_o in_o the_o gospel_n of_o the_o woman_n and_o the_o unrighteous_a judge_n who_o although_o he_o neither_o fear_v god_n nor_o man_n yet_o because_o this_o woman_n never_o cease_v to_o call_v upon_o he_o he_o be_v compel_v to_o hear_v her_o cause_n for_o if_o the_o worst_a man_n be_v not_o yet_o so_o wicked_a manifold_a &_o miraculous_a that_o we_o be_v never_o able_a to_o conceive_v they_o therefore_o let_v we_o think_v that_o the_o thing_n which_o we_o ask_v be_v not_o deny_v but_o differ_v &_o assure_v patience_n but_o also_o the_o confidence_n and_o trust_n which_o they_o have_v in_o the_o goodness_n of_o their_o master_n assure_o trust_v with_o patient_a tarry_n to_o find_v mercy_n and_o favour_n in_o their_o sight_n in_o time_n convenient_a but_o in_o deed_n david_n speak_v here_o of_o better_a servant_n than_o be_v common_o see_v at_o this_o day_n for_o there_o be_v no_o kind_n of_o people_n more_o deceitful_a negligent_a and_o stubborn_a even_o when_o there_o be_v great_a cause_n of_o sharp_a and_o severe_a correction_n wherefore_o let_v all_o such_o as_o will_v be_v count_v good_a servant_n remember_v the_o example_n and_o rule_n set_v forth_o here_o by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o observe_v of_o all_o good_a servant_n which_o be_v that_o they_o be_v not_o froward_a and_o fortune_n for_o so_o they_o call_v the_o blessing_n of_o god_n the_o cause_n whereof_o they_o do_v not_o know_v before_o wisdom_n power_n justice_n and_o all_o princely_a virtue_n for_o where_o as_o just_a man_n for_o the_o most_o part_n be_v oppress_v and_o the_o unjust_a do_v rule_v and_o reign_v therefore_o they_o think_v that_o justice_n be_v not_o the_o mean_a whereby_o kingdom_n and_o common_a weal_n be_v preserve_v for_o then_o cicero_n shall_v not_o have_v be_v oppress_v nor_o antonius_n advance_v to_o such_o power_n and_o authority_n if_o by_o power_n kingdom_n can_v be_v and_o make_v man_n holy_a so_o our_o church_n be_v call_v holy_a holy_a not_o only_o for_o the_o holiness_n of_o the_o person_n but_o rather_o for_o the_o holiness_n which_o the_o word_n and_o sacrament_n do_v bring_v unto_o those_o which_o use_v they_o right_o to_o those_o he_o wish_v joy_n and_o gladness_n and_o that_o they_o may_v rejoice_v and_o be_v merry_a in_o the_o lord_n the_o meaning_n then_o of_o this_o clause_n be_v this_o that_o christ_n jesus_n our_o king_n have_v give_v unto_o we_o his_o word_n have_v command_v we_o to_o be_v baptize_v to_o use_v the_o sacrament_n because_o of_o the_o continual_a vexation_n and_o assault_n of_o satan_n that_o as_o we_o be_v never_o without_o occasion_n of_o decline_a &_o fall_v from_o god_n so_o likewise_o we_o shall_v not_o cease_v to_o exercise_v ourselves_o in_o the_o continual_a meditation_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n to_o the_o edify_a both_o of_o ourselves_o and_o of_o the_o church_n for_o there_o be_v nothing_o so_o pernicious_a as_o the_o opinion_n of_o many_o at_o this_o day_n who_o as_o soon_o as_o they_o have_v get_v never_o so_o little_a knowledge_n of_o this_o heavenly_a wisdom_n think_v themselves_o by_o and_o by_o to_o be_v great_a doctor_n for_o see_v that_o these_o thing_n do_v not_o consist_v in_o fine_a and_o eloquent_a talk_n in_o reason_v and_o dispute_v but_o in_o practice_n and_o experience_n direct_v not_o by_o man_n reason_n but_o by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n they_o be_v miserable_o deceive_v that_o rest_n in_o bare_a and_o naked_a knowledge_n which_o be_v but_o unprofitable_a without_o experience_n and_o practice_v in_o the_o old_a testament_n god_n appoint_v but_o only_o the_o ten_o commandment_n wherein_o he_o will_v have_v his_o people_n to_o be_v exercise_v and_o occupy_v but_o who_o be_v there_o ever_o among_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n which_o can_v say_v that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o attain_v to_o the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n set_v forth_o in_o those_o commandment_n and_o shall_v we_o which_o in_o the_o new_a testament_n have_v the_o whole_a scripture_n set_v forth_o unto_o we_o glory_n in_o the_o fullness_n and_o perfection_n of_o our_o knowledge_n let_v we_o not_o think_v therefore_o so_o high_o of_o ourselves_o but_o let_v we_o humble_v ourselves_o before_o the_o holy_a ghost_n and_o confess_v this_o wisdom_n to_o be_v infinite_a and_o such_o as_o we_o can_v never_o full_o attain_v unto_o although_o we_o shall_v spend_v our_o whole_a life_n in_o the_o study_n of_o the_o scripture_n for_o although_o by_o the_o contrary_n to_o religion_n or_o not_o agreeable_a to_o the_o same_o verse_n 2._o thou_o shall_v eat_v the_o labour_n of_o thy_o hand_n thou_o shall_v be_v bless_v and_o it_o shall_v be_v well_o with_o thou_o this_o must_v they_o learn_v also_o which_o be_v marry_v that_o they_o must_v labour_v for_o the_o law_n of_o nature_n require_v that_o the_o husband_n shall_v sustain_v and_o nourish_v his_o wife_n and_o his_o child_n for_o after_o that_o man_n and_o wife_n do_v know_v that_o they_o ought_v to_o fear_n god_n their_o creator_n who_o not_o only_o make_v they_o but_o give_v his_o blessing_n also_o unto_o his_o creature_n this_o second_o must_v they_o know_v that_o some_o thing_n they_o must_v do_v that_o they_o consume_v not_o their_o day_n in_o ease_n and_o idleness_n hesiodus_n the_o provide_v a_o habitation_n where_o thou_o may_v dwell_v with_o thy_o wife_n and_o child_n then_o a_o wife_n but_o yet_o so_o that_o thou_o be_v not_o without_o a_o ox_n also_o to_o plow_v the_o ground_n that_o be_v thou_o must_v have_v some_o thing_n wherewith_o thou_o may_v maintain_v and_o succour_v thou_o and_o thy_o for_o albeit_o that_o our_o diligence_n care_n and_o travel_n be_v not_o wherewith_o they_o may_v live_v wherefore_o the_o prophet_n will_v have_v all_o marry_a folk_n to_o live_v in_o the_o sweat_n of_o their_o face_n and_o to_o be_v exercise_v with_o labour_n that_o they_o may_v tame_v the_o flesh_n and_o mortify_v the_o lust_n thereof_o for_o they_o that_o live_v in_o idleness_n walk_v in_o the_o way_n not_o of_o the_o lord_n but_o of_o the_o devil_n for_o neither_o be_v they_o neither_o live_v they_o in_o the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n for_o god_n have_v ordain_v labour_n and_o here_o behold_v the_o wisdom_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n labour_n be_v one_o of_o the_o discommodity_n of_o matrimony_n but_o how_o well_o here_o do_v the_o holy_a ghost_n hide_v this_o discommodity_n when_o first_o he_o show_v that_o labour_n be_v command_v of_o god_n and_o afterwards_o promise_v that_o although_o it_o seem_v to_o be_v never_o so_o hard_a and_o so_o grievous_a a_o thing_n yet_o by_o it_o god_n will_v bless_v we_o this_o be_v in_o deed_n to_o mingle_v wormwood_n with_o sugar_n like_v as_o also_o jesus_n sirach_n adorn_v labour_n with_o this_o commendation_n that_o he_o say_v it_o be_v ordain_v of_o god_n and_o he_o have_v also_o a_o pleasure_n therein_o great_a need_n have_v we_o of_o this_o admonition_n because_o of_o our_o corrupt_a nature_n for_o most_o true_a it_o be_v that_o the_o nature_n of_o all_o man_n as_o the_o poet_n say_v be_v prone_a and_o ready_a to_o fall_v from_o labour_n to_o filthy_a lust_n and_o fleshly_a liberty_n this_o holy_a hymn_n therefore_o teach_v the_o husband_n with_o his_o spouse_n that_o in_o their_o matrimony_n they_o shall_v fear_v god_n and_o put_v their_o trust_n in_o he_o and_o
call_v grace_n heaven_n itself_o by_o the_o which_o we_o have_v a_o open_a passage_n unto_o heaven_n and_o the_o which_o we_o can_v never_o attain_v unto_o by_o the_o law_n by_o work_n or_o by_o our_o own_o endeavour_n but_o rather_o as_o a_o most_o large_a heaven_n it_o receive_v we_o beleve_v that_o by_o adoption_n we_o be_v make_v righteous_a before_o god_n through_o christ._n hereby_o we_o may_v see_v what_o the_o intent_n and_o purpose_n of_o the_o prophet_n be_v in_o this_o psalm_n namely_o to_o teach_v we_o the_o true_a way_n to_o righteousness_n life_n and_o salvation_n again_o to_o show_v we_o the_o way_n how_o to_o escape_v death_n sin_n and_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n that_o out_o of_o this_o life_n we_o may_v pass_v to_o life_n everlasting_a and_o in_o teach_v of_o these_o thing_n he_o show_v his_o own_o experience_n and_o lay_v open_a unto_o we_o his_o own_o heart_n which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v exercise_v and_o school_v with_o many_o tentation_n that_o so_o he_o may_v attain_v to_o this_o doctrine_n wherein_o he_o go_v about_o here_o to_o enstruct_v we_o also_o the_o sum_n whereof_o be_v that_o he_o rest_v whole_o in_o the_o hope_n of_o god_n mercy_n and_o in_o the_o sure_a trust_n of_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o his_o sin_n but_o these_o thing_n shall_v more_o clear_o appear_v hereafter_o in_o expound_v of_o the_o psalm_n verse_n 1._o out_o of_o the_o depth_n have_v i_o call_v unto_o thou_o oh_o lord_n it_o may_v seem_v that_o the_o prophet_n use_v here_o more_o word_n than_o need_v but_o he_o that_o consider_v well_o the_o cause_n which_o force_v but_o he_o set_v forth_o here_o the_o grief_n of_o a_o vex_a and_o wound_a conscience_n &_o the_o very_a sorrow_n of_o death_n when_o a_o man_n feel_v his_o heart_n as_o it_o be_v oppress_v with_o desperation_n think_v himself_o forsake_v of_o god_n when_o he_o see_v his_o own_o unworthiness_n and_o desert_n accuse_v before_o god_n as_o a_o terrible_a judge_n yea_o when_o it_o seem_v unto_o he_o that_o god_n have_v not_o only_o forsake_v he_o but_o cast_v he_o away_o for_o ever_o hate_v &_o abhor_v he_o for_o his_o sin_n these_o tentation_n be_v much_o more_o terrible_a than_o those_o which_o man_n common_o fall_v into_o for_o they_o be_v not_o without_o danger_n of_o soul_n &_o eternal_a salvation_n therefore_o he_o use_v here_o this_o manner_n of_o speech_n say_v out_o of_o the_o depth_n i_o call_v unto_o thou_o etc_n etc_n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v great_a be_v the_o trouble_n wherewith_o i_o be_o oppress_v for_o i_o feel_v my_o own_o sin_n and_o the_o just_a wrath_n of_o god_n upon_o i_o for_o the_o same_o neither_o can_v i_o find_v relief_n or_o comfort_n to_o my_o restless_a &_o afflict_a soul_n against_o the_o malice_n of_o man_n wherewith_o they_o molest_v and_o vex_v we_o there_o be_v remedy_n to_o be_v find_v but_o this_o wound_n be_v uncurable_a except_o the_o lord_n send_v help_v and_o succour_v from_o above_o and_o in_o deed_n such_o trouble_n as_o the_o godly_a be_v common_o exercise_v withal_o as_o the_o loss_n of_o good_n wife_n child_n &_o such_o other_o may_v yet_o be_v overcome_v or_o bear_v with_o patience_n moreover_o in_o those_o which_o be_v count_v inferior_a sin_n as_o the_o offence_n of_o youth_n the_o deject_v &_o break_v hearted_a may_v more_o easy_o be_v raise_v up_o again_o but_o these_o affliction_n seem_v to_o they_o and_o be_v in_o deed_n untollerable_a when_o they_o feel_v themselves_o oppress_v with_o such_o horrible_a and_o hellish_a cogitation_n that_o they_o can_v see_v nothing_o else_o but_o that_o they_o be_v cast_v away_o from_o god_n for_o ever_o they_o therefore_o that_o feel_v such_o bitter_a tentation_n god._n have_v here_o a_o example_n that_o david_n in_o himself_o feel_v and_o have_v experience_n of_o the_o like_a for_o it_o make_v the_o tentation_n much_o more_o grevous_a when_o they_o which_o be_v thus_o afflict_v feel_v that_o as_o to_o they_o it_o seem_v which_o none_o else_o do_v feel_v but_o they_o alone_o we_o must_v learn_v therefore_o that_o even_o the_o godly_a have_v ever_o suffer_v the_o same_o affliction_n and_o have_v be_v beat_v down_o even_o to_o death_n with_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o law_n and_o sin_n as_o we_o may_v see_v here_o by_o the_o example_n of_o david_n cry_v even_o as_o it_o be_v out_o of_o hell_n and_o say_n out_o of_o the_o depth_n do_v i_o cry_v unto_o thou_o oh_o lord_n etc_n etc_n but_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o we_o to_o know_v that_o we_o sustain_v not_o these_o trouble_n and_o tentation_n alone_o but_o we_o must_v also_o learn_v the_o way_n whereby_o such_o as_o have_v suffer_v the_o like_a tentation_n have_v be_v raise_v up_o again_o and_o here_o you_o see_v david_n what_o he_o do_v you_o see_v whither_o he_o fly_v in_o his_o great_a distress_n he_o despair_v not_o but_o cry_v unto_o the_o lord_n as_o one_o yet_o hope_v assure_o to_o find_v relief_n and_o comfort_n rest_v thou_o also_o in_o this_o hope_n and_o do_v as_o he_o do_v david_n be_v not_o tempt_v to_o the_o end_n he_o shall_v despair_v think_v not_o thou_o therefore_o that_o thy_o tentation_n be_v send_v unto_o thou_o that_o thou_o shall_v be_v swallow_v who_o have_v say_v that_o a_o trouble_a spirit_n be_v a_o sacrifice_n unto_o he_o it_o be_v expedient_a also_o to_o have_v some_o faithful_a brother_n at_o hand_n which_o may_v comfort_v we_o in_o these_o bitter_a conflict_n for_o god_n will_v that_o in_o his_o church_n one_o shall_v help_v to_o comfort_v a_o other_o as_o member_n knit_v together_o in_o one_o body_n and_o he_o have_v promise_v that_o when_o two_o be_v gather_v together_o in_o his_o name_n he_o will_v be_v the_o third_o amongst_o they_o and_o doubtless_o nothing_o comfort_v a_o afflict_a conscience_n so_o much_o as_o to_o hear_v some_o godly_a brother_n declare_v out_o of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n that_o such_o terror_n and_o affliction_n be_v send_v of_o god_n not_o to_o destroy_v we_o but_o to_o humble_v we_o thereby_o to_o make_v we_o to_o acknowledge_v the_o great_a mercy_n of_o god_n offer_v unto_o we_o and_o to_o receive_v the_o same_o with_o thankful_a heart_n but_o if_o in_o this_o distress_n we_o be_v destitute_a of_o the_o help_n of_o such_o faithful_a brethren_n we_o must_v then_o do_v as_o davidâ—id_v â—id_z in_o this_o place_n that_o be_v we_o must_v cry_v unto_o the_o lord_n &_o pray_v as_o this_o psalm_n teach_v we_o wherein_o you_o see_v such_o sorrowful_a and_o bitter_a sigh_n as_o lively_o express_v in_o david_n the_o great_a anguish_n of_o spirit_n from_o whence_o flow_v such_o the_o lord_n also_o in_o mind_n of_o his_o promise_n thereby_o to_o move_v he_o the_o rather_o to_o give_v ear_n unto_o his_o prayer_n verse_n 2._o lord_n hear_v my_o voice_n let_v thine_o ear_n attend_v to_o the_o voice_n of_o my_o prayer_n he_o speak_v as_o i_o have_v say_v before_o to_o the_o same_o god_n who_o seat_n be_v in_o jerusalem_n like_a as_o we_o now_o speak_v unto_o that_o god_n and_o call_v he_o father_n who_o we_o know_v and_o worship_v in_o christ_n alone_o on_o this_o god_n with_o deep_a sigh_n he_o call_v that_o he_o will_v with_o the_o eye_n of_o mercy_n look_v upon_o he_o and_o gracious_o harken_v unto_o his_o prayer_n but_o if_o we_o think_v that_o we_o can_v not_o pray_v with_o such_o a_o mind_n or_o with_o such_o fervency_n of_o spirit_n as_o these_o word_n do_v express_v pray_v we_o must_v consider_v that_o david_n himself_o do_v not_o thus_o pray_v in_o his_o anguish_n and_o in_o the_o
therefore_o it_o put_v up_o the_o mind_n of_o man_n with_o pride_n until_o they_o be_v humble_v of_o the_o lord_n and_o so_o learn_v that_o there_o be_v no_o help_n in_o this_o righteousness_n before_o the_o judgement_n of_o god._n sorrow_n how_o often_o have_v we_o see_v that_o great_a &_o notable_a divine_n which_o live_v among_o man_n with_o a_o marvellous_a show_n of_o holiness_n &_o with_o a_o great_a presumption_n of_o their_o own_o righteousness_n at_o length_n when_o death_n approach_v have_v fall_v into_o desperation_n &_o flee_v to_o most_o vain_a &_o foolish_a trifle_n for_o help_n &_o succour_n in_o so_o much_o the_o not_o only_o yet_o live_v they_o wrap_v themselves_o in_o a_o friar_n cowl_n but_o also_o be_v dead_a be_v bury_v in_o the_o same_o so_o i_o lose_v the_o sweet_a comfort_n and_o consolation_n of_o the_o gospel_n as_o for_o example_n if_o thou_o will_v enter_v into_o life_n keep_v the_o commandment_n again_o not_o every_o one_o that_o say_v lord_n lord_n shall_v enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n with_o such_o sentence_n poor_a and_o silly_a conscience_n be_v so_o bruise_v and_o break_v that_o they_o can_v see_v nothing_o but_o know_v it_o but_o consider_v well_o whether_o thou_o have_v sure_o hold_v thereof_o so_o that_o it_o can_v be_v wrest_v from_o thou_o by_o satan_n &_o thine_o own_o conscience_n paul_n plain_o confess_v that_o he_o have_v not_o yet_o attain_v to_o this_o knowledge_n 3._o but_o follow_v it_o as_o one_o run_v in_o the_o race_n and_o press_v towards_o the_o mark_n so_o it_o go_v with_o we_o but_o friend_n unto_o the_o gospel_n yet_o either_o deride_v or_o molest_v the_o true_a professor_n thereof_o against_o all_o such_o this_o psalm_n be_v unitten_v for_o the_o trouble_a &_o afflict_a child_n of_o god_n which_o be_v count_v of_o the_o world_n either_o heretical_a or_o seditious_a or_o else_o fool_n and_o abject_n but_o this_o consolation_n they_o have_v that_o see_v the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o this_o psalm_n do_v teach_v they_o how_o to_o pray_v in_o these_o distress_n they_o shall_v be_v hear_v and_o though_o they_o be_v here_o contemn_v and_o count_v the_o outsweping_n of_o corruptible_a but_o the_o lord_n and_o inhabior_n of_o heaven_n as_o a_o place_n without_o all_o corruption_n and_o therefore_o a_o most_o meet_a habitation_n for_o he_o almighty_a and_o rule_v over_o all_o everlasting_a incorruptible_a see_v all_o thing_n pierce_v all_o thing_n the_o prophet_n also_o call_v god_n here_o the_o inhabior_n of_o heaven_n to_o signify_v that_o the_o earth_n be_v full_a of_o the_o proud_a and_o scornful_a and_o that_o the_o godly_a be_v tread_v under_o foot_n of_o those_o that_o dwell_v upon_o the_o earth_n and_o be_v count_v the_o ouâ—swepings_n of_o the_o world_n and_o therefore_o he_o see_v none_o beside_o the_o lord_n and_o inhabior_n of_o heaven_n of_o who_o he_o may_v look_v for_o help_n and_o succour_v the_o great_a danger_n whereof_o the_o prophet_n complain_v be_v herein_o express_v in_o that_o he_o look_v about_o on_o every_o side_n and_o seek_v for_o succour_n can_v find_v none_o to_o help_v he_o but_o only_o the_o inhabior_n of_o heaven_n these_o thing_n make_v the_o tentation_n much_o more_o grievous_a and_o terrible_a and_o therefore_o he_o pray_v with_o such_o word_n in_o his_o tentation_n as_o perhaps_o he_o at_o that_o time_n do_v not_o perfect_o understand_v as_o saint_n paul_n also_o say_v we_o understand_v not_o what_o we_o pray_v the_o spirit_n know_v and_o understand_v what_o these_o word_n mean_v but_o man_n can_v not_o conceive_v the_o power_n thereof_o in_o the_o time_n of_o his_o tentation_n while_o faith_n be_v infirm_a and_o be_v yet_o in_o the_o conflict_n but_o when_o our_o petition_n be_v grant_v &_o prayer_n hear_v than_o faith_n have_v her_o force_n and_o we_o have_v more_o perfect_a understanding_n both_o of_o the_o tentation_n and_o also_o of_o the_o prayer_n which_o we_o therein_o use_v the_o prophet_n therefore_o in_o this_o verse_n set_v the_o inhabior_n of_o heaven_n against_o the_o inhabitor_n of_o the_o earth_n and_o conceive_v comfort_n and_o courage_n that_o albeit_o the_o world_n be_v great_a and_o mighty_a yet_o god_n be_v more_o mighty_a this_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o the_o prophet_n in_o this_o verse_n and_o albeit_o the_o word_n be_v but_o simple_a as_o you_o see_v yet_o be_v they_o full_a of_o consolation_n to_o he_o that_o believe_v the_o spirit_n which_o minister_v these_o word_n and_o stir_v up_o these_o groan_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o afflict_a know_v with_o what_o majesty_n and_o power_n they_o
