pride_n and_o hypocrisy_n and_o all_o wretched_a lust_n that_o fight_v against_o their_o soul_n being_n never_o so_o much_o torment_v with_o those_o sin_n as_o when_o they_o have_v attain_v to_o a_o great_a measure_n of_o humility_n and_o of_o sincerity_n he_o that_o be_v most_o lowly_a be_v ever_o most_o vex_v with_o his_o pride_n and_o he_o that_o be_v most_o upright_o and_o true_a heart_a be_v most_o of_o all_o trouble_a with_o the_o guilefulnes_n and_o deceitfulnes_n of_o his_o own_o heart_n because_o the_o word_n and_o the_o spirit_n work_v together_o do_v cause_n he_o both_o more_o not_o the_o right_a way_n leave_v it_o there_o be_v the_o right_a way_n walk_v in_o it_o but_o many_o have_v heart_n pester_v with_o pride_n and_o lust_n and_o covetousness_n and_o yet_o go_v a_o whole_a month_n nay_o many_o month_n and_o year_n together_o and_o never_o feel_v any_o rebuke_n in_o their_o conscience_n how_o come_v this_o to_o pass_v that_o other_o be_v full_a of_o grief_n and_o full_a of_o tear_n for_o their_o sin_n and_o they_o be_v never_o trouble_v for_o they_o be_v it_o because_o there_o be_v great_a uprightness_n in_o they_o than_o there_o be_v in_o other_o no_o sure_o be_v his_o special_a sin_n that_o he_o number_v his_o subject_n which_o may_v seem_v to_o be_v no_o such_o great_a matter_n for_o which_o god_n shall_v so_o plague_v the_o land_n and_o if_o there_o have_v be_v that_o measure_n of_o hypocrisy_n in_o david_n as_o there_o be_v in_o many_o of_o we_o he_o will_v have_v plead_v thus_o for_o himself_o what_o need_v i_o to_o be_v so_o trouble_v for_o i_o say_v that_o be_v possess_v with_o such_o fear_n let_v they_o look_v to_o it_o for_o of_o all_o other_o stroke_v the_o pestilence_n be_v likely_a to_o fall_v upon_o they_o if_o it_o be_v a_o sword_n in_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o pope_n or_o of_o satan_n than_o it_o stand_v they_o upon_o to_o beware_v of_o god_n ordinance_n but_o see_v none_o but_o atheist_n will_v deny_v but_o it_o be_v order_v by_o god_n overruling_a hand_n they_o take_v a_o bad_a course_n to_o escape_v his_o stroke_n for_o where_o can_v they_o hide_v themselves_o but_o he_o will_v find_v they_o out_o and_o whither_o can_v they_o flee_v from_o his_o all-seeing_a presence_n he_o can_v take_v away_o the_o infection_n where_o it_o be_v and_o bring_v it_o even_o in_o a_o moment_n where_o it_o be_v not_o and_o therefore_o go_v where_o they_o can_v they_o go_v in_o continual_a danger_n for_o where_o be_v the_o sword_n of_o god_n most_o likely_a to_o smite_v but_o where_o he_o be_v most_o displease_v and_o where_o there_o be_v most_o profaneness_n and_o great_a contempt_n of_o the_o mean_n of_o salvation_n therefore_o if_o they_o will_v escape_v let_v they_o fall_v down_o before_o the_o lord_n and_o humble_v themselves_o as_o david_n do_v and_o not_o be_v so_o much_o afraid_a of_o their_o neighbour_n that_o have_v the_o plague_n as_o of_o sin_n that_o bring_v the_o plague_n and_o run_v not_o so_o much_o from_o the_o occasion_n of_o this_o sickness_n though_o all_o good_a care_n must_v be_v have_v that_o way_n as_o from_o the_o cause_n which_o if_o we_o can_v do_v then_o either_o god_n will_v spare_v we_o and_o exempt_v we_o from_o this_o stroke_n or_o else_o give_v we_o comfort_v under_o it_o and_o deliverance_n from_o it_o by_o life_n or_o death_n make_v it_o a_o mean_n deal_v faithful_o in_o this_o behalf_n then_o will_v our_o trouble_n be_v more_o easy_o bear_v for_o when_o sin_n lie_v heavy_a affliction_n lie_v light_a and_o therefore_o when_o man_n be_v so_o vex_v and_o disquiet_v at_o injury_n and_o indignity_n or_o any_o outward_a distress_n that_o they_o can_v eat_v nor_o drink_v nor_o sleep_n it_o be_v sure_a that_o they_o have_v little_a godly_a sorrow_n and_o store_n of_o worldly_a sorrow_n for_o if_o that_o holy_a grief_n do_v possess_v their_o heart_n it_o will_v eat_v up_o and_o consume_v carnal_a vexation_n even_o as_o moses_n serpent_n do_v the_o serpent_n of_o the_o egyptian_a sorcerer_n and_o this_o every_o godly_a man_n shall_v find_v in_o his_o own_o experience_n that_o look_v what_o day_n or_o hour_n soever_o he_o have_v weep_v most_o bitter_o for_o his_o offence_n against_o god_n than_o he_o esteem_v cross_n to_o be_v most_o light_a and_o easy_a and_o find_v matter_n of_o thankfulness_n in_o whatsoever_o grievance_n befall_v he_o as_o know_v it_o to_o be_v god_n goodness_n that_o it_o be_v not_o worse_o with_o he_o here_o then_o be_v those_o to_o be_v reprove_v that_o will_v tell_v we_o a_o long_a tale_n of_o their_o repentance_n use_v 1_o and_o of_o their_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n but_o what_o kind_n of_o sorrow_n have_v it_o be_v a_o shallow_a and_o hollow_a and_o slight_a sorrow_n that_o never_o make_v they_o to_o shed_v one_o tear_n in_o secret_a nor_o to_o make_v one_o fervent_a prayer_n from_o a_o break_a heart_n for_o the_o pardon_v of_o their_o iniquity_n let_v they_o hear_v that_o one_o of_o their_o kine_n be_v dead_a or_o one_o of_o their_o horse_n steal_v or_o their_o barn_n on_o fire_n or_o the_o like_a and_o they_o will_v mourn_v in_o good_a earnest_n at_o such_o a_o casualty_n and_o be_v more_o move_v to_o hear_v that_o their_o good_n be_v in_o danger_n to_o be_v burn_v then_o that_o their_o soul_n be_v likely_a to_o burn_v in_o hell_n this_o be_v a_o plain_a argument_n that_o what_o show_v soever_o they_o make_v yet_o they_o have_v not_o true_o repent_v for_o their_o evil_a work_n for_o if_o the_o holy_a ghost_n have_v give_v they_o a_o inward_a touch_n for_o their_o sin_n they_o will_v grieve_v most_o for_o that_o which_o hurt_v they_o most_o and_o not_o for_o those_o thing_n the_o have_v whereof_o can_v much_o benefit_v they_o nor_o the_o loss_n thereof_o prove_v very_o inconvenient_a unto_o they_o yet_o so_o beastly_a be_v many_o that_o if_o they_o be_v urge_v to_o sound_a repentance_n and_o great_a reformation_n they_o present_o ask_v what_o will_v you_o have_v we_o to_o do_v more_o than_o we_o do_v already_o we_o love_n god_n above_o all_o and_o our_o neighbour_n as_o ourselves_o and_o repent_v continual_o for_o our_o fault_n what_o will_v you_o have_v we_o so_o melancholy_n and_o pensive_a as_o some_o be_v that_o use_n to_o run_v to_o sermon_n nay_o we_o will_v be_v advise_v of_o that_o for_o they_o be_v so_o grieve_v for_o their_o sin_n that_o they_o be_v almost_o drive_v unto_o desperation_n on_o miserable_a man_n little_o do_v they_o know_v what_o sound_a repentance_n mean_n for_o that_o be_v the_o thing_n which_o god_n minister_n must_v aim_v at_o even_o to_o make_v man_n despair_v in_o themselves_o that_o so_o they_o may_v rest_v whole_o upon_o christ_n jesus_n and_o happy_a be_v that_o sermon_n and_o happy_a that_o day_n which_o make_v man_n so_o to_o weep_v over_o christ_n jesus_n as_o that_o they_o utter_o fall_v out_o with_o themselves_o and_o with_o their_o naughty_a and_o profane_a course_n for_o this_o will_v best_o prove_v unto_o their_o soul_n that_o they_o have_v receive_v the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n and_o have_v attain_v unto_o true_a repentance_n second_o use_v 2_o this_o make_v for_o the_o sharp_a rebuke_n of_o those_o who_o when_o the_o lord_n do_v knock_v at_o the_o door_n of_o their_o heart_n and_o make_v know_v unto_o they_o that_o they_o be_v liable_a to_o god_n wrath_n in_o regard_n of_o their_o vile_a and_o sinful_a course_n of_o life_n they_o seek_v by_o all_o mean_n to_o quench_v these_o good_a motion_n and_o to_o drive_v away_o the_o fear_n of_o hell_n from_o their_o heart_n oh_o little_a do_v such_o know_v what_o they_o do_v for_o now_o they_o grieve_v the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n which_o do_v move_v they_o to_o turn_v unto_o the_o lord_n and_o do_v refuse_v to_o accept_v of_o his_o gracious_a offer_n of_o mercy_n and_o favour_n and_o therefore_o it_o may_v be_v the_o lord_n in_o his_o justice_n will_v deny_v they_o the_o like_a for_o everafter_o and_o suffer_v they_o to_o perish_v in_o their_o iniquity_n without_o any_o sense_n or_o feel_n thereof_o at_o all_o three_o here_o be_v a_o instruction_n for_o we_o
these_o rule_n first_o beware_v of_o use_v any_o ill_a mean_n for_o the_o relieve_n of_o ourselves_o for_o every_o finfull_a shift_n be_v as_o it_o be_v a_o sword_n draw_v out_o against_o ourselves_o or_o as_o a_o canon_n that_o be_v to_o be_v discharge_v upon_o us._n second_o be_v sure_a to_o use_v all_o good_a and_o lawful_a mean_n that_o god_n have_v appoint_v for_o our_o comfort_n in_o trouble_n or_o our_o deliverance_n out_o of_o trouble_n three_o as_o we_o must_v use_v the_o mean_n lest_o we_o be_v find_v tempter_n of_o god_n so_o must_v we_o commit_v the_o success_n whole_o unto_o the_o lord_n and_o with_o a_o quiet_a and_o peaceable_a heart_n rest_n upon_o he_o many_o will_v be_v content_a to_o be_v industrious_a in_o their_o call_n and_o use_v all_o diligence_n for_o the_o relieve_n of_o themselves_o and_o their_o family_n but_o herein_o they_o fail_v exceed_o that_o they_o vex_v and_o disquiet_v their_o heart_n and_o do_v not_o labour_v with_o that_o cheerfulness_n as_o they_o shall_v this_o and_o that_o i_o do_v say_v they_o to_o the_o utmost_a of_o my_o power_n but_o alas_o all_o will_v not_o maintain_v i_o and_o i_o we_o know_v not_o how_o to_o bring_v the_o year_n about_o now_o you_o do_v not_o sit_v still_o as_o god_n will_v have_v you_o but_o you_o take_v his_o burden_n upon_o your_o shoulder_n for_o do_v you_o that_o which_o god_n bid_v you_o and_o he_o have_v say_v i_o will_v care_v for_o you_o the_o reason_n why_o there_o be_v such_o cark_n and_o care_v such_o tumble_v and_o toss_v be_v because_o man_n think_v there_o be_v none_o to_o care_n for_o they_o but_o themslue_n now_o if_o that_o be_v true_a it_o stand_v man_n upon_o indeed_o to_o bestir_v themselves_o and_o to_o busy_v their_o thought_n day_n and_o night_n about_o the_o matter_n of_o the_o world_n but_o see_v that_o the_o lord_n do_v protest_v that_o he_o care_v for_o we_o what_o need_n have_v we_o to_o perplex_v our_o heart_n with_o some_o necessary_a vexation_n and_o distraction_n sure_o it_o argue_v great_a corruption_n in_o we_o when_o we_o give_v way_n to_o such_o distrustful_a thought_n for_o either_o we_o do_v not_o believe_v that_o god_n do_v care_n for_o we_o or_o at_o least_o we_o imagine_v that_o his_o care_n be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o we_o both_o which_o shall_v be_v far_o from_o the_o heart_n of_o all_o true_a christian_n let_v we_o therefore_o strive_v against_o our_o unbelief_n and_o give_v unto_o god_n the_o praise_n of_o his_o truth_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o of_o his_o alsufficiency_n and_o then_o fix_v our_o hope_n upon_o he_o we_o shall_v never_o be_v ashamed_a but_o according_a to_o our_o faith_n it_o shall_v be_v unto_o us._n the_o five_o sermon_n isaiah_n 30._o verse_n 8.9_o verse_n 8._o now_o go_v and_o write_v it_o before_o they_o in_o a_o table_n and_o note_v it_o in_o a_o book_n that_o it_o may_v be_v for_o the_o last_o day_n for_o ever_o and_o ever_o 9_o that_o it_o be_v a_o rebellious_a people_n lie_v child_n and_o child_n that_o will_v not_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o the_o lord_n we_o hear_v in_o the_o word_n immediate_o go_v before_o how_o sharp_o the_o lord_n do_v reprove_v and_o threaten_v the_o unbelieve_a jew_n for_o that_o they_o hear_v of_o rumour_n of_o war_n do_v not_o go_v unto_o god_n by_o prayer_n but_o unto_o the_o egyptian_n by_o gift_n as_o if_o pharaoh_n be_v more_o able_a or_o more_o willling_a to_o help_v and_o succour_v they_o then_o the_o lord_n himself_o as_o also_o how_o the_o prophet_n isaiah_n be_v send_v unto_o they_o to_o assure_v they_o that_o the_o egyptian_n will_v not_o help_v they_o or_o if_o they_o will_v they_o can_v not_o nay_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v so_o far_o from_o help_v they_o that_o they_o shall_v do_v they_o all_o the_o mischief_n that_o possible_o they_o can_v and_o therefore_o he_o proclaim_v unto_o they_o that_o their_o strength_n be_v to_o sit_v still_o that_o be_v to_o keep_v themselves_o at_o home_n in_o their_o place_n and_o calling_n and_o to_o rest_v upon_o god_n who_o strength_n they_o shall_v find_v to_o be_v every_o way_n sufficient_a to_o defend_v and_o maintain_v they_o against_o all_o their_o adversary_n now_o because_o they_o be_v drunken_a with_o passion_n and_o fear_n and_o will_v not_o harken_v to_o the_o proclamation_n of_o peace_n therefore_o do_v the_o lord_n send_v out_o against_o they_o a_o proclamation_n of_o outlawrie_n and_o charge_v they_o with_o rebellion_n and_o high_a treason_n against_o his_o majesty_n and_o that_o it_o may_v be_v of_o more_o force_n with_o they_o he_o command_v the_o prophet_n to_o write_v it_o before_o they_o in_o a_o table_n that_o so_o every_o one_o may_v take_v notice_n thereof_o yea_o not_o only_o in_o a_o table_n to_o shame_v they_o for_o the_o instant_n but_o in_o a_o book_n that_o it_o may_v be_v for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v even_o for_o ever_o and_o ever_o that_o be_v that_o it_o may_v stand_v in_o record_n for_o their_o perpetual_a desgrace_n and_o reproach_n now_o because_o they_o will_v hardly_o yield_v unto_o this_o charge_n to_o wit_n that_o they_o be_v traitor_n against_o god_n in_o seek_v unto_o the_o king_n of_o egypt_n for_o aid_n but_o will_v object_v that_o they_o do_v it_o in_o policy_n and_o in_o good_a meaning_n for_o the_o benefit_n of_o the_o church_n and_o commonwealth_n and_o do_v rest_n on_o god_n nevertheless_o he_o put_v off_o that_o by_o fay_v that_o they_o be_v lie_v child_n full_o of_o hypocrisy_n and_o dissimulation_n pretend_v to_o send_v into_o egypt_n in_o godly_a wisdom_n whereas_o it_o proceed_v indeed_o from_o their_o wretched_a unbelief_n and_o because_o it_o be_v not_o safe_a for_o he_o to_o say_v this_o in_o general_a unless_o he_o can_v prove_v it_o therefore_o he_o allege_v against_o they_o this_o particular_a that_o they_o will_v not_o hear_v the_o law_n of_o the_o lord_n they_o be_v drive_v to_o hear_v now_o and_o then_o but_o they_o do_v it_o not_o willing_o nor_o with_o a_o good_a affection_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v just_o condemn_v as_o rebel_n against_o the_o lord_n in_o all_o these_o word_n than_o be_v set_v down_o a_o grievous_a complaint_n against_o the_o nation_n of_o the_o jew_n wherein_o we_o may_v observe_v 1._o first_o god_n charge_n that_o he_o give_v unto_o the_o prophet_n that_o he_o shall_v prefer_v a_o indictment_n against_o they_o not_o only_o for_o their_o present_n but_o for_o their_o everlasting_a shame_n if_o they_o do_v persist_v in_o their_o evil_a course_n 2._o the_o reason_n why_o he_o take_v this_o round_a course_n with_o they_o viz._n because_o they_o be_v rebel_n against_o he_o which_o rebellion_n of_o they_o be_v so_o much_o more_o grievous_a in_o that_o they_o be_v full_a of_o craft_n and_o cunning_a to_o defend_v their_o viie_a practice_n verse_n 8._o now_o go_v and_o write_v it_o etc._n etc._n in_o that_o the_o prophet_n be_v command_v to_o proclaim_v unto_o all_o man_n that_o these_o unbelieve_a jew_n be_v rebel_n against_o god_n this_o be_v the_o point_n hence_o to_o be_v observe_v that_o open_v sin_n must_v have_v open_a rebuke_n and_o this_fw-mi doct._n 1_o grace_n though_o the_o party_n be_v never_o so_o many_o shame_n open_v sin_n must_v have_v open_a shame_n and_o the_o person_n never_o so_o great_a yet_o that_o must_v not_o stop_v the_o mouth_n of_o god_n minister_n and_o servant_n but_o they_o must_v the_o rather_o be_v rebuke_v that_o thereby_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a they_o may_v be_v true_o humble_v as_o in_o this_o place_n we_o see_v the_o noble_a man_n and_o ambassador_n be_v very_o busy_a in_o raise_v large_a sum_n of_o money_n to_o send_v unto_o the_o king_n of_o egypt_n for_o help_n yet_o though_o it_o be_v the_o sin_n almost_o of_o the_o whole_a land_n and_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o ruler_n be_v chief_a in_o it_o the_o prophet_n be_v charge_v to_o speak_v against_o they_o and_o to_o write_v against_o they_o and_o to_o shame_v they_o not_o only_o for_o the_o present_a but_o for_o ever_o if_o they_o do_v not_o turn_v to_o the_o lord_n by_o sound_a repentance_n the_o like_a be_v enjoin_v this_o same_o prophet_n chap._n 58._o vers_fw-la 1._o cry_v aloud_o 58._o isa_n 58._o spare_v not_o lift_v up_o thy_o voice_n like_o a_o trumpet_n and_o show_v my_o people_n their_o transgression_n and_o the_o house_n of_o jacob_n their_o sin_n they_o pretend_v great_a zeal_n and_o forwardness_n in_o religion_n they_o will_v seek_v the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n word_n they_o will_v inquire_v after_o the_o ordinance_n of_o justice_n they_o will_v fast_o also_o and_o use_v much_o strictness_n in_o outward_a show_n yet_o because_o they_o be_v full_a of_o hypocrisy_n of_o cruelty_n and_o oppression_n of_o impiety_n and_o sabbath_n break_v and_o such_o like_a
that_o when_o our_o saviour_n have_v inveigh_v against_o the_o hypocrisy_n of_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisy_n a_o expounder_n of_o the_o law_n answer_v 45.46_o luk_n 9_o 45.46_o and_o say_v unto_o he_o master_n thus_o say_v thou_o put_v we_o to_o rebuke_v also_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v have_v say_v be_v advise_v what_o you_o speak_v for_o this_o doctrine_n of_o you_o tend_v to_o our_o disgrace_n
