they_o as_o little_a matter_n carnal_a heart_n ordinary_o the_o thing_n that_o concern_v their_o business_n in_o the_o world_n they_o think_v great_a matter_n oh_o i_o may_v not_o neglect_v that_o i_o may_v not_o neglect_v that_o i_o may_v not_o neglect_v such_o a_o business_n or_o i_o may_v not_o neglect_v to_o visit_v or_o gratify_v such_o a_o friend_n but_o now_o for_o the_o worship_n of_o god_n it_o be_v good_a indeed_o but_o whither_o it_o be_v do_v or_o not_o it_o be_v no_o great_a matter_n therefore_o they_o can_v put_v off_o prayer_n if_o they_o have_v any_o business_n the_o time_n of_o prayer_n must_v pay_v for_o it_o they_o can_v put_v off_o that_o upon_o any_o slight_a occasion_n they_o do_v not_o account_v the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_v great_a matter_n my_o brethren_n i_o beseech_v you_o learn_v this_o lesson_n this_o morning_n to_o account_v the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_v great_a matter_n they_o be_v the_o great_a thing_n that_o do_v concern_v you_o here_o in_o this_o world_n for_o they_o be_v the_o homage_n that_o you_o tender_v up_o to_o the_o high_a god_n as_o you_o hear_v and_o those_o thing_n wherein_o god_n communicat_o himself_n in_o his_o choice_n mercy_n now_o be_v such_o great_a matter_n there_o be_v cause_n that_o we_o shall_v prepare_v for_o that_o one_o thing_n of_o prayer_n say_v luther_n it_o be_v a_o great_a work_n and_o a_o difficult_a work_n and_o therefore_o there_o have_v need_n be_v preparation_n for_o it_o business_n of_o great_a consequence_n we_o make_v preparation_n for_o indeed_o if_o a_o business_n be_v a_o slight_a business_n we_o can_v fall_v upon_o it_o on_o a_o sudden_a you_o make_v not_o preparation_n to_o go_v in_o a_o boat_n in_o the_o thames_n but_o to_o go_v a_o voyage_n you_o make_v great_a preparation_n now_o if_o man_n and_o woman_n will_v but_o understand_v the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n to_o be_v great_a they_o will_v see_v a_o necessity_n to_o make_v a_o preparation_n many_o man_n for_o want_n of_o preparation_n to_o duty_n they_o lose_v a_o great_a part_n of_o the_o time_n when_o they_o come_v to_o perform_v a_o duty_n of_o worship_n in_o prayer_n they_o spend_v half_o the_o time_n that_o be_v convenient_a to_o be_v spend_v in_o prayer_n before_o they_o begin_v to_o pray_v and_o so_o in_o hear_v the_o word_n they_o be_v a_o long_a time_n before_o they_o can_v settle_v themselves_o to_o attend_v to_o the_o word_n or_o in_o any_o other_o kind_n of_o worship_n i_o say_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o time_n in_o the_o worship_n be_v spend_v ordinary_o before_o we_o can_v get_v our_o heart_n to_o close_v with_o the_o worship_n now_o that_o be_v a_o sore_a and_o a_o great_a evil_a to_o lose_v any_o part_n of_o the_o time_n of_o worship_n christian_n i_o beseech_v you_o account_v high_o of_o the_o time_n of_o your_o worship_n you_o have_v be_v so_o long_a time_n at_o prayer_n yea_o but_o how_o much_o of_o it_o have_v be_v lose_v because_o you_o have_v not_o prepare_v before_o hand_n for_o it_o perhaps_o you_o kneel_v upon_o your_o knee_n but_o you_o be_v a_o long_a time_n before_o you_o can_v get_v your_o heart_n warm_a at_o your_o work_n why_o you_o shall_v have_v be_v warm_a before_o you_o have_v come_v it_o be_v so_o oftentimes_o with_o many_o man_n when_o they_o meet_v together_o and_o there_o be_v no_o preparation_n for_o their_o business_n they_o come_v together_o and_o they_o be_v a_o long_a time_n before_o they_o can_v buckle_v to_o the_o business_n that_o they_o come_v about_o because_o there_o be_v no_o preparation_n but_o if_o there_o be_v preparation_n make_v that_o every_o man_n know_v before_o hand_n what_o his_o work_n be_v they_o can_v fall_v to_o it_o and_o they_o can_v dispatch_v as_o much_o in_o one_o hour_n as_o other_o do_v in_o two_o or_o three_o but_o of_o that_o we_o shall_v speak_v more_o afterward_o three_o 3_o there_o must_v be_v preparation_n because_o our_o heart_n be_v natural_o exceed_o unprepared_a for_o every_o good_a work_n we_o be_v all_o natural_o even_o reprobate_a to_o every_o good_a work_n the_o duty_n of_o god_n worship_n be_v high_a and_o spiritual_a and_o holy_a thing_n but_o by_o nature_n our_o heart_n grovel_v in_o the_o dirt_n and_o we_o be_v carnal_a sensual_a drossy_a dead_a slight_a sottish_a and_o vain_a altogether_o unfit_a to_o come_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n oh_o that_o we_o be_v but_o apprehensive_a and_o senfible_a of_o the_o unfitnesse_n of_o our_o heart_n to_o come_v into_o god_n presence_n perhaps_o because_o thou_o know_v not_o god_n thou_o can_v rush_v into_o his_o presence_n without_o any_o more_o ado_n but_o if_o thou_o know_v thyself_o and_o god_n thou_o can_v not_o but_o see_v thyself_o altogether_o unfit_a for_o his_o presence_n and_o so_o as_o to_o wonder_v that_o the_o lord_n shall_v not_o spurn_v thou_o out_o of_o his_o presence_n every_o time_n thou_o come_v unto_o he_o there_o have_v need_v then_o be_v preparation_n because_o we_o be_v so_o unfit_a to_o come_v into_o his_o presence_n four_o 4_o there_o have_v need_n be_v preparation_n because_o of_o the_o great_a hindrance_n of_o the_o worship_n
name_n there_o be_v one_o notable_a scripture_n in_o jer._n 8._o 2._o that_o show_v how_o much_o strength_n the_o idolater_n put_v forth_o in_o the_o worship_v of_o their_o idol_n they_o will_v not_o do_v it_o in_o a_o slight_a and_o vain_a way_n but_o their_o heart_n be_v much_o in_o that_o false_a worship_n say_v the_o text_n and_o they_o shall_v spread_v they_o before_o the_o sun_n and_o the_o moon_n and_o all_o the_o host_n of_o heaven_n mark_v now_o who_o they_o have_v love_v and_o who_o they_o have_v serve_v and_o after_o who_o they_o have_v walk_v and_o when_o they_o have_v seek_v and_o who_o they_o have_v worship_v all_o these_o be_v put_v together_o in_o reference_n to_o their_o idol_n oh_o that_o it_o can_v be_v say_v so_o of_o we_o in_o reference_n to_o god_n when_o we_o come_v to_o worship_v he_o who_o we_o have_v love_v and_o who_o we_o have_v serve_v and_o after_o who_o we_o have_v walk_v and_o who_o we_o have_v seek_v and_o who_o we_o have_v worship_v there_o be_v all_o these_o several_a expression_n to_o show_v the_o strength_n of_o their_o spirit_n in_o follow_v after_o their_o idol_n and_o that_o be_v the_o five_o thing_n in_o our_o sanctify_v of_o god_n name_n 6_o the_o six_o be_v if_o thou_o will_v sanctify_v god_n name_n in_o worship_n there_o must_v be_v a_o humble_a frame_n of_o spirit_n worship_v he_o with_o much_o humility_n of_o soul_n abraham_n do_v be_v humility_n of_o spirit_n now_o this_o humility_n of_o spirit_n appear_v in_o these_o thing_n 1_o first_o admire_v god_n goodness_n that_o we_o do_v live_v at_o this_o time_n and_o that_o we_o have_v liberty_n to_o come_v before_o he_o we_o may_v have_v be_v past_o pray_v and_o worship_v of_o god_n think_v thus_o what_o a_o mercy_n be_v it_o that_o we_o be_v not_o banish_v out_o of_o god_n presence_n that_o the_o lord_n have_v not_o spurn_v we_o out_o of_o his_o sight_n as_o filth_n and_o cast_v we_o out_o as_o a_o everlasting_a abhor_v while_o other_o have_v be_v pray_v we_o may_v have_v be_v yell_v under_o the_o wrath_n of_o the_o eternal_a god_n come_v with_o this_o apprehension_n of_o thyself_o and_o adorre_v god_n goodness_n that_o thou_o be_v alive_a to_o pray_v and_o alive_a to_o hear_v god_n word_n and_o that_o it_o be_v not_o only_o a_o duty_n but_o a_o rich_a privilege_n and_o mercy_n that_o god_n will_v admit_v of_o thou_o to_o come_v into_o his_o presence_n again_o it_o be_v the_o goodness_n of_o god_n that_o he_o will_v vouchsafe_v to_o look_v upon_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v do_v in_o heaven_n than_o if_o the_o lord_n do_v humble_v himself_o to_o behold_v the_o thing_n that_o be_v do_v in_o heaven_n then_o how_o do_v the_o lord_n humble_a himself_o to_o behold_v i_o a_o poor_a vile_a caitiff_n as_o i_o be_o in_o myself_o and_o yet_o that_o god_n shall_v not_o only_o behold_v i_o before_o he_o but_o invite_v i_o to_o come_v into_o his_o presence_n what_o mercy_n and_o goodness_n be_v this_o 2_o our_o heart_n must_v be_v take_v off_o from_o the_o thought_n and_o apprehension_n of_o all_o excellency_n in_o ourselves_o we_o must_v not_o come_v in_o the_o pride_n of_o our_o heart_n because_o we_o have_v ability_n more_o than_o other_o what_o do_v all_o thy_o part_n commend_v thou_o to_o god_n thou_o have_v ability_n in_o express_v of_o thyself_o in_o prayer_n why_o do_v thy_o part_n commend_v thou_o to_o god_n what_o ever_o be_v natural_a in_o any_o of_o our_o duty_n be_v nothing_o to_o god_n only_o that_o which_o be_v from_o his_o own_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o thou_o shall_v come_v in_o thy_o own_o thought_n as_o vile_a as_o if_o thou_o have_v no_o part_n and_o ability_n at_o all_o lay_v aside_o all_o such_o apprehension_n of_o thyself_o for_o the_o truth_n be_v some_o poor_a break_a heart_a sinner_n that_o can_v but_o sigh_v out_o a_o few_o groan_n to_o god_n and_o be_v not_o able_a to_o speak_v two_o or_o three_o sentence_n together_o in_o a_o right_a language_n but_o only_a breath_n out_o his_o soul_n to_o god_n may_v be_v a_o thousand_o thousand_o time_n more_o acceptable_a to_o god_n than_o thou_o that_o be_v able_a to_o make_v great_a oration_n when_o thou_o come_v before_o he_o 3_o thou_o must_v come_v without_o any_o righteousness_n of_o thy_o own_o thou_o must_v never_o come_v into_o god_n presence_n but_o as_o a_o poor_a worm_n and_o if_o there_o be_v any_o difference_n that_o be_v make_v between_o thou_o and_o other_o in_o outward_a respect_n it_o be_v nothing_o to_o thou_o when_o thou_o be_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n thou_o be_v as_o a_o base_a vile_a worm_n though_o though_o be_v a_o prince_n or_o emperor_n 4_o thy_o heart_n must_v be_v take_v off_o from_o what_o thou_o do_v if_o thou_o have_v any_o ability_n of_o grace_n yet_o thy_o heart_n must_v be_v take_v off_o there_o there_o may_v be_v pride_n not_o only_o from_o one_o part_n but_o it_o may_v be_v god_n have_v give_v i_o inlargement_n in_o prayer_n the_o devil_n will_v come_v in_o and_o seek_v to_o puff_n up_o thy_o heart_n even_o because_o of_o this_o but_o thy_o heart_n must_v be_v take_v off_o there_o and_o thou_o must_v deny_v thyself_o in_o all_o when_o thou_o have_v do_v the_o best_a service_n of_o all_o yet_o thou_o must_v conclude_v thou_o be_v a_o unprofitable_a servant_n when_o thou_o have_v pray_v the_o best_a yet_o rise_v with_o shame_n and_o take_v heed_n of_o have_v thy_o heart_n puff_v up_o even_o through_o the_o assistance_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o holy_a duty_n 5_o last_o thou_o must_v come_v with_o a_o humble_a resignation_n of_o thyself_o to_o god_n to_o be_v content_a to_o wait_v upon_o god_n as_o long_o as_o he_o please_v to_o waiâ—_n upon_o god_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o time_n and_o of_o the_o measure_n and_o of_o the_o manner_n of_o the_o communication_n of_o himself_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o mean_n by_o which_o he_o will_v please_v to_o communicate_v himself_o wait_v upon_o he_o let_v i_o have_v mercy_n though_o at_o the_o last_o hour_n this_o now_o be_v a_o humble_a heart_n in_o prayer_n and_o when_o we_o come_v with_o such_o a_o poverty_n of_o spirit_n as_o this_o be_v we_o may_v expect_v that_o the_o lord_n will_v accept_v of_o we_o give_v this_o poor_a man_n some_o what_o will_v god_n say_v this_o poor_a man_n cry_v and_o the_o lord_n hear_v he_o in_o the_o seven_o place_n we_o must_v bring_v that_o which_o be_v god_n own_o in_o sanctify_a god_n name_v i_o speak_v to_o this_o before_o in_o the_o point_n of_o preparation_n viz._n that_o in_o god_n worship_n we_o must_v give_v he_o his_o own_o i_o will_v only_o mention_v it_o here_o in_o the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n in_o two_o regard_n 1_o first_o to_o give_v god_n his_o own_o for_o the_o matter_n of_o it_o 2_o second_o to_o give_v god_n his_o own_o that_o be_v what_o come_v from_o the_o
service_n god_n have_v general_o from_o the_o man_n and_o woman_n of_o the_o earth_n it_o shall_v make_v our_o heart_n bleed_v within_o we_o where_o almost_o be_v the_o man_n or_o woman_n that_o according_a to_o that_o text_n in_o isa_n stir_v up_o himself_o to_o take_v hold_n on_o god_n and_o i_o very_o believe_v that_o in_o the_o open_n of_o this_o point_n of_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o ash_n of_o the_o altar_n to_o go_v through_o as_o you_o have_v grate_n in_o your_o fire_n to_o make_v they_o burn_v clear_a and_o for_o the_o ash_n to_o fall_v down_o so_o the_o lord_n will_v have_v such_o a_o grate_n for_o the_o ash_n of_o the_o altar_n to_o fall_v down_o we_o have_v need_n of_o such_o a_o grate_n oh_o the_o ash_n and_o dirt_n and_o filth_n that_o there_o be_v in_o our_o service_n when_o we_o come_v to_o offer_v and_o tender_v they_o up_o to_o god_n so_o that_o we_o have_v cause_n i_o say_v to_o be_v humble_v for_o holy_a offering_n there_o be_v many_o godly_a people_n that_o through_o god_n mercy_n be_v able_a to_o keep_v from_o gross_a sin_n they_o do_v not_o find_v it_o any_o great_a matter_n to_o keep_v from_o company_n swear_v drink_v uncleanness_n lie_v or_o wrong_v of_o other_o and_o such_o kind_n of_o sin_n as_o those_o be_v so_o that_o they_o see_v not_o such_o need_n of_o humiliation_n in_o this_o regard_n unless_o it_o be_v for_o that_o their_o nature_n be_v as_o corrupt_v as_o any_o though_o they_o break_v not_o forth_o into_o those_o actual_a gross_a sin_n but_o the_o main_a work_n of_o the_o humiliation_n of_o those_o that_o be_v godly_a it_o be_v to_o be_v humble_v for_o their_o thought_n for_o the_o mispending_a of_o time_n and_o for_o not_o sanctify_v of_o god_n name_n in_o holy_a dnty_n those_o be_v the_o main_a thing_n that_o be_v the_o subject_n of_o the_o humiliation_n of_o the_o saint_n beside_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n and_o death_n that_o they_o carry_v about_o with_o they_o and_o it_o will_v be_v a_o good_a sign_n that_o thy_o heart_n have_v some_o tenderness_n in_o it_o when_o thou_o make_v these_o to_o be_v the_o matter_n of_o thy_o humiliation_n carnal_a people_n little_a be_v trouble_v for_o these_o if_o they_o fall_v into_o such_o sin_n as_o their_o conscience_n do_v fly_v in_o their_o face_n than_o they_o be_v trouble_v and_o humble_v but_o for_o such_o thing_n as_o these_o be_v they_o be_v seldom_o humble_v to_o be_v humble_v for_o thy_o holy_a offering_n be_v a_o good_a sign_n of_o a_o gracious_a heart_n we_o read_v of_o the_o cherubim_n that_o they_o have_v six_o wing_n and_o with_o two_o of_o their_o wing_n the_o text_n say_v they_o cover_v their_o face_n so_o my_o brethren_n we_o have_v need_n have_v wing_n as_o it_o be_v to_o cover_v our_o best_a duty_n they_o have_v wing_n and_o with_o two_o they_o cover_v their_o leg_n and_o with_o two_o their_o face_n we_o have_v need_v not_o only_o of_o a_o cover_n for_o our_o low_a part_n and_o meanner_n duty_n but_o a_o cover_n of_o our_o holy_a duty_n to_o cover_v our_o face_n our_o best_a duty_n of_o all_o the_o most_o heavenly_a duty_n we_o perform_v have_v need_n be_v purge_v by_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n in_o levit._n 16._o 14._o 16._o we_o read_v of_o their_o holy_a thing_n that_o there_o be_v need_n of_o purge_v of_o they_o by_o blood_n and_o so_o it_o shall_v be_v in_o our_o holy_a duty_n let_v we_o be_v humble_v for_o our_o best_a performance_n that_o ever_o we_o perform_v in_o our_o life_n the_o best_a have_v need_n be_v so_o but_o then_o as_o for_o other_o that_o have_v make_v little_a or_o your_o pain_n and_o labour_n be_v quite_o lose_v for_o if_o that_o be_v all_o it_o may_v be_v well_o with_o you_o but_o you_o have_v aggravate_v your_o sin_n by_o your_o holy_a duty_n those_o duty_n that_o other_o have_v enjoy_v communion_n with_o god_n in_o and_o further_v their_o eternal_a life_n by_o thou_o have_v aggravate_v thy_o sin_n by_o they_o yet_o it_o be_v thy_o duty_n to_o do_v they_o but_o i_o say_v by_o not_o sanctify_v of_o god_n name_n thou_o have_v aggravate_v thy_o sin_n so_o much_o the_o more_o as_o those_o that_o be_v godly_a they_o work_v out_o their_o salvation_n prayer_n other_o thing_n come_v under_o worship_n but_o yet_o these_o be_v the_o three_o cheiâ—_n duty_n of_o worship_n and_o i_o intend_v to_o speak_v to_o all_o these_o three_o and_o to_o show_v how_o we_o shall_v sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o draw_v nigh_o unto_o he_o in_o the_o word_n sacrament_n and_o prayer_n we_o may_v choose_v several_a text_n for_o all_o these_o but_o they_o fall_v full_a within_o the_o general_a and_o therefore_o it_o shall_v be_v sufficient_a for_o to_o ground_v the_o sanctify_a of_o god_n name_n in_o these_o duty_n of_o worship_n upon_o this_o text_n i_o of_o sanctify_v the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n that_o which_o we_o be_v to_o speak_v to_o this_o morning_n it_o be_v the_o sanctify_a of_o the_o name_n of_o god_n in_o the_o hear_n of_o his_o wordâ—_n if_o you_o will_v have_v the_o ground_n of_o what_o we_o be_v to_o say_v concern_v this_o in_o a_o particular_a scripture_n you_o may_v have_v it_o in_o luk._n 8._o 18._o take_v heed_n therefore_o how_o you_o hear_v it_o be_v not_o enough_o to_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n that_o be_v good_a and_o no_o question_n but_o god_n be_v please_v with_o the_o willingness_n of_o people_n to_o come_v to_o hear_v his_o word_n but_o you_o must_v not_o rest_v bare_o in_o hear_v but_o take_v heed_n how_o you_o hear_v now_o this_o be_v a_o point_n of_o great_a consequence_n and_o i_o hope_v it_o may_v do_v good_a to_o help_v to_o make_v many_o sermon_n to_o be_v profitable_a to_o you_o &_o the_o point_n i_o hope_n be_v seasonable_a &_o will_v be_v very_o suitable_a unto_o you_o for_o those_o that_o come_v to_o hear_v so_o soon_o in_o a_o morning_n and_o be_v willing_a even_o in_o hard_a weather_n to_o come_v out_o of_o their_o bed_n they_o give_v some_o good_a testimony_n that_o they_o do_v desire_n to_o honour_n god_n in_o their_o hear_n and_o to_o get_v good_a by_o their_o hear_n and_o it_o be_v pity_v that_o labour_n and_o pain_n shall_v be_v bestow_v and_o no_o profit_n but_o hurt_n rather_o get_v by_o it_o which_o god_n forbid_v therefore_o now_o i_o be_o to_o speak_v to_o a_o point_n that_o may_v help_v you_o so_o to_o hear_v as_o may_v recompense_v all_o your_o labour_n and_o pain_n in_o hear_v in_o preach_v to_o those_o that_o come_v to_o hear_v that_o so_o they_o may_v get_v good_a and_o benefit_n by_o it_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o encouragement_n then_o to_o such_o as_o come_v in_o a_o formal_a way_n because_o they_o use_v to_o come_v therefore_o this_o point_n be_v a_o great_a point_n i_o shall_v open_v bear_v gall_n and_o wormwood_n and_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v when_o he_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o this_o curse_n that_o he_o bless_v himself_o in_o his_o heart_n say_v i_o shall_v have_v peace_n though_o i_o walk_v in_o the_o imagination_n of_o my_o heart_n etc._n etc._n take_v heed_n there_o be_v not_o among_o you_o a_o root_n that_o bear_v gall_n and_o wormwood_n this_o be_v a_o bitter_a root_n in_o man_n heart_n when_o they_o can_v hear_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o have_v their_o heart_n rise_v against_o it_o and_o think_v with_o themselves_o that_o there_o be_v no_o such_o matter_n these_o be_v but_o mere_a word_n but_o mere_a wind_n let_v the_o minister_n say_v what_o he_o will_v and_o talk_v as_o long_o as_o he_o will_v i_o will_v go_v on_o in_o my_o way_n i_o shall_v do_v well_o enough_o that_o which_o he_o say_v it_o be_v but_o his_o opinion_n i_o say_v when_o man_n can_v bless_v themselves_o thus_o in_o their_o way_n and_o when_o there_o be_v such_o tumultuous_a
