they_o have_v imprison_v it_o in_o unrighteousness_n and_o long_o play_v as_o hypocrite_n with_o that_o which_o they_o preach_v and_o profess_v to_o believe_v custom_n will_v so_o harden_v they_o that_o their_o knowledge_n will_v have_v little_a power_n on_o their_o heart_n §_o 2_o and_o no_o wonder_n if_o the_o fruit_n be_v like_o the_o tree_n these_o vice_n will_v not_o be_v idle_a nor_o bring_v forth_o holy_a or_o just_a effect_n 1._o it_o be_v likely_a they_o will_v make_v it_o the_o chief_a care_n of_o their_o mind_n to_o get_v that_o which_o they_o most_o love_n and_o that_o they_o will_v study_v preferment_n which_o be_v the_o clergie-mans_n near_a way_n to_o wealth_n 2._o and_o then_o they_o must_v be_v flatterer_n of_o those_o that_o can_v prefer_v they_o or_o at_o least_o must_v not_o serious_o call_v they_o to_o repentance_n or_o tell_v they_o of_o their_o sin_n 3._o in_o all_o difference_n of_o what_o consequence_n soever_o they_o will_v usual_o pass_v their_o judgement_n on_o the_o side_n of_o such_o as_o can_v prefer_v or_o hurt_v they_o 4._o in_o religious_a controversy_n they_o will_v usual_o be_v on_o the_o side_n that_o be_v for_o their_o worldly_a interest_n be_v it_o right_n or_o wrong_v 5._o they_o will_v harden_v great_a man_n in_o their_o sin_n by_o flatter_v they_o 6._o they_o will_v harden_v the_o profane_a by_o please_v they_o in_o their_o ignorance_n and_o ungodliness_n to_o get_v they_o on_o their_o side_n 7._o they_o will_v be_v enemy_n to_o the_o serious_a religious_a people_n because_o they_o discern_v the_o vice_n and_o hypocrisy_n which_o they_o will_v conceal_v and_o because_o they_o honour_v such_o as_o fear_v the_o lord_n while_o vile_a person_n be_v contemn_v in_o their_o eye_n psal._n 15.4_o 8._o they_o will_v turn_v their_o preach_n against_o such_o partly_o to_o vent_v their_o malignant_a spleen_n and_o partly_o to_o overcome_v they_o as_o their_o enemy_n hereupon_o they_o will_v describe_v their_o serious_a piety_n as_o faction_n self_n opinion_n and_o hypocrisy_n and_o will_v raise_v jealousy_n against_o they_o in_o the_o mind_n of_o ruler_n and_o increase_v the_o rabble_n malignity_n and_o rage_n and_o will_v extenuate_v the_o sin_n and_o danger_n of_o the_o most_o ungodly_a sort_n that_o take_v their_o own_o part_n 9_o they_o will_v shame_v their_o office_n and_o profession_n by_o base_a mutability_n turn_v with_o the_o time_n and_o tide_n as_o temptation_n from_o their_o worldly_a interest_n lead_v they_o 10._o they_o will_v by_o their_o make_n light_a of_o godliness_n and_o by_o the_o scandal_n or_o unholyness_n of_o their_o own_o conversation_n make_v the_o vulgar_a believe_v that_o godliness_n be_v either_o a_o cheat_n or_o a_o matter_n of_o mere_a word_n and_o usual_o even_o in_o that_o they_o be_v great_o want_v because_o they_o have_v not_o so_o thorough_o study_v save_v truth_n nor_o percieve_v its_o evidence_n nor_o set_v their_o heart_n upon_o it_o nor_o deep_o receive_v and_o retain_v it_o for_o serious_a affection_n quicken_v the_o mind_n to_o serious_a consideration_n and_o cause_v man_n speedy_o and_o deep_o to_o receive_v that_o truth_n which_o other_o receive_v but_o slow_o superficial_o or_o not_o at_o all_o how_o eager_o and_o prosperous_o do_v man_n study_v that_o which_o they_o strong_o love_v and_o how_o hardly_o do_v they_o learn_v that_o which_o they_o have_v no_o delight_n in_o much_o more_o which_o they_o hate_v and_o their_o very_a nature_n be_v against_o but_o if_o a_o hypocrite_n shall_v have_v good_a notion_n and_o word_n yet_o he_o will_v usual_o be_v great_o want_v in_o that_o serious_a delivery_n which_o be_v ordinary_o needful_a to_o make_v the_o hearer_n serious_a christian_n it_o seldom_o reach_v the_o heart_n of_o the_o hearer_n which_o come_v not_o from_o the_o heart_n of_o the_o speaker_n as_o light_n cause_v light_a so_o heat_n cause_v heat_n and_o the_o dead_a be_v unfit_a to_o generate_v life_n the_o arrow_n will_v not_o go_v far_o or_o deep_a if_o both_o the_o bow_n and_o arm_n be_v not_o strong_a that_o shoot_v it_o constant_a experience_n tell_v we_o undeniable_o of_o the_o different_a success_n of_o the_o read_n or_o say_v of_o a_o pulpit-lesson_n or_o a_o dull_a or_o a_o mere_a affect_a speech_n &_o of_o the_o judicious_a serious_a explication_n &_o application_n of_o of_o save_v soul_n will_v do_v the_o mean_n will_v be_v choose_v and_o use_v and_o the_o work_n do_v agreeable_o to_o the_o principle_n and_o the_o end_n but_o if_o a_o stage-hypocrite_n shall_v learn_v the_o knack_n or_o be_v of_o preach_v with_o affect_a fervency_n and_o seem_a zeal_n yet_o art_n and_o paint_n will_v not_o reach_v the_o power_n and_o beauty_n of_o nature_n usual_o affectation_n bewray_v itself_o and_o when_o it_o be_v discern_v the_o hypocrisy_n be_v loathe_v and_o it_o fail_v ordinary_o in_o point_n of_o constancy_n will_v the_o hypocrite_n pray_v always_o job_n 27.10_o art_n will_v not_o hold_v out_o like_a nature_n when_o the_o motive_n of_o gain_n which_o be_v their_o godliness_n cease_v the_o pleasure_n of_o applause_n the_o mean_n will_v cease_v yea_o usual_o it_o turn_v to_o a_o malignant_a revile_v of_o the_o serious_a piety_n which_o they_o counterfeit_v before_o or_o of_o the_o person_n who_o applause_n they_o do_v affect_v for_o where_o the_o hypocrisy_n of_o the_o preacher_n be_v discover_v by_o his_o contrary_a self-condemning_a word_n or_o life_n and_o the_o people_n according_o judge_v of_o he_o as_o he_o be_v his_o proud_a heart_n can_v bear_v it_o but_o he_o turn_v a_o malicious_a reproacher_n of_o those_o who_o applause_n he_o seek_v think_v by_o disgrace_v they_o to_o defend_v his_o own_o esteem_n by_o make_v their_o censure_n of_o he_o incredible_a or_o contemptible_a and_o if_o the_o hypocrite_n shall_v hold_v on_o his_o stage_n affectation_n with_o plausible_a art_n yet_o it_o will_v not_o reach_v to_o a_o answerable_a discharge_n of_o the_o rest_n of_o his_o ministerial_a work_n it_o be_v from_o man_n that_o he_o expect_v his_o reward_n and_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o man_n on_o the_o public_a stage_n that_o he_o appear_v in_o his_o borrow_a glory_n but_o in_o his_o family_n or_o his_o conversation_n or_o his_o ministerial_a duty_n to_o man_n in_o private_a he_o answer_v not_o his_o public_a show_n he_o will_v not_o set_v himself_o to_o instruct_v and_o win_v the_o ignorant_a and_o impenitent_a and_o zealous_o to_o save_v man_n from_o their_o sin_n and_o to_o raise_v man_n earthly_a mind_n to_o heaven_n by_o pray_v with_o they_o and_o by_o heavenly_a discourse_n and_o by_o a_o heavenly_a conversation_n nor_o will_v he_o be_v at_o much_o cost_n or_o labour_n to_o do_v good_a §_o 6._o but_o alas_o the_o far_o great_a part_n of_o bad_a unexperienced_a clergy_n man_n do_v prove_v so_o hurtful_a to_o the_o church_n that_o they_o have_v not_o so_o much_o as_o the_o hypocrite_n seem_v zeal_n church_n abassia_n egypt_n syria_n armenia_n the_o greek_n and_o moscovite_n etc._n etc._n nor_o only_a the_o papist_n priest_n in_o the_o west_n but_o too_o great_a a_o number_n in_o the_o reform_a church_n and_o it_o be_v more_o lamentable_a than_o wonderful_a for_o there_o go_v so_o much_o to_o the_o general_a plant_n of_o a_o worthy_a faithful_a ministry_n
